This article explains the situations in which you can get full screen on iPad and how to do it.

If you want to get full screen on your iPad—that is, no clock, date, or battery icon on the screen—we've got bad news for you: There's no way to do it in every situation. The iPadOS doesn't provide that option. But, there are some cases in which you can do something similar in certain apps.

How to Get a Full Screen on iPad in Safari

One of the most common cases in which people want an iPad to be full screen is the Safari web browser . Getting iPad Safari in full screen appeals to people who wish to have the most immersive web browsing experience possible. Here's what to do:

This tip doesn't work on all websites. It works on relatively few. This tip is the only way to make Safari full screen on an iPad. It relies on web developers who have added a bit of code to the site, and most developers don't do that.

Find the website you want to view full screen.

Tap the action button (the button with the arrow coming out of it).

Tap Add to Home Screen . This creates a shortcut to the site on your iPad home screen (aka a web clip).

Edit the display name for the shortcut and then tap Add .

When you tap the shortcut from your home screen, it will open the website in Safari.

How to Get a Full Screen on iPad: For Video

Another way to get full screen on iPad is in video apps. Some video apps offer actual full screen, with no menu bar at the top, while others keep the menu bar but otherwise go full screen. Users can't control which is which; it's up to the developer of the app.

Whichever your video app supports, you can view it full screen by tapping the icon that looks like two arrows pointing in opposite directions.

You can view almost any type of web content on an iPad, but it doesn’t readily support full-screen mode. People who prefer to use the Safari browser on the iPad face a problem viewing web content without browser panels, elements, etc.

If you want to view a webpage, course, or HTML5 presentation, it will be much more convenient to do it in full-screen mode. Full-screen viewing looks more native and provides additional space for your content, while hiding all Safari elements but the main window.  

In this article, we provide a brief guide on how to view a website full screen on an iPad — and you won’t even need to change your iPad settings.

How to Open Safari in Full-Screen Mode on an iPad

• First, launch the Safari browser from the home screen and go to the webpage that you wish to view in full-screen mode.

To get a video to show in full-screen mode on an iPad, you’ll need to download a standalone video app. There are multiple apps on the market, but you can use YouTube’s app, for example. Its interface will look almost the same as it would in a browser on a PC, but there are some differences to YouTube on a touch screen device in regard to switching to a full-screen mode.

To make the YouTube app play in full-screen mode, choose and open a video. When the video starts playing, tap on it once. You’ll see several additional options, including dual arrows at the bottom right corner. Tap the arrows to go to full screen.

How to Remove Split Screen on Safari 

Apple devices are multitasking tools. The clearest evidence of this is that the Safari browser features a split screen. It allows you to open two websites in two separate windows simultaneously. These split-screen windows work independently of each other and help users to be more productive. For example, you can open YouTube to watch an instructional video in one window and open another website next to it to find some additional information on a topic. 

Split View is enabled by default, so you can’t disable it forever. But there are a few tricks that can help you get your iPad screen back to full size.

To close Split View, tap the Multitasking button in the Safari window that you want to keep, then tap the full screen button. You can also drag the central app divider left or right over the Safari window that you want to close.

Things You Should Know

• Maximize Safari by clicking the green icon and selecting "Enter Full Screen."
• Alternatively, use keyboard shortcuts like "Cmd + Ctrl + F" to make Safari full-screen.
• Once Safari is in full-screen mode, go to "System Settings > General" and uncheck the box next to "Close windows…"

• Alternatively, press a keyboard shortcut to enter Full Screen without using your mouse. For macOS Big Sur and earlier, press Cmd + Ctrl + F . For macOS Monterey and later, press Fn + F . [2] X Research source Press those shortcut buttons again or Esc to close full-screen.

Most browsers offer a private browsing mode that aims to keep the websites you view off the record. But what exactly does it do in Safari and how do you get the best out of it?

First and foremost, Private Browsing keeps the website pages you visit out of your History . The aim is to prevent someone else from seeing which pages you have visited if they have access to your phone or computer.

In Safari, Private Browsing does a lot more than just hide URLs. It also:

• Prevents recent searches from showing up in your history.
• Stops remembering details you enter in forms for autofill.
• Keeps downloaded items from appearing in your Downloads list.
• Locks private tabs after a period of inactivity.
• Adds tracking and fingerprinting protection.

However, it’s important to note that Private Browsing does not stop you from being tracked altogether. Websites you visit will still be able to use various methods to track you, and will still have access to all data that you send them.

On macOS, iOS, and iPadOS, Safari groups private tabs together, and separates them from non-private tabs. On Mac, each Safari window is either private or non-private, and can have as many tabs as you want.

On iPhone, you can switch between private and non-private modes, each of which shows all tabs belonging to that mode.

You can spot when you’re viewing a private tab with these signs:

• The address bar has a dark background. This may be less noticeable if you’re using Dark Mode .
• On Mac, you’ll see a prominent Private indicator in the title bar.
• On iPhone, you’ll see Private alongside the site URL at the bottom of your screen.

The steps to enter Private Browsing mode are nearly identical on an iPhone and iPad. The only difference is that the tab icon is at the bottom of the screen on iOS and the top on iPadOS.

• Long-press the tab icon (two overlapping pages) on the bottom-right (iPhone) or top-right (iPad) of your screen.
• Tap the New Private Tab menu item.
• If locked, enter your passcode to unlock Private Browsing.

You can enter Private Browsing mode on macOS using either a menu item or a keyboard shortcut:

• Open the File menu and choose New Private Window .
• Alternatively, use the keyboard shortcut Shift + Cmd + n .
• Use the browser as you normally would. Any tabs you open from this window will open in the same window, in private mode.

You may want to prevent users of an iPhone or iPad from using Private Browsing mode at all. To do so:

• Open the Settings app.
• Tap on Screen Time .
• Under RESTRICTIONS , click on Content & Privacy Restrictions .
• If not already enabled, press the toggle next to Content & Privacy Restrictions to enable.
• Tap Content Restrictions .
• Change the Web Content setting to Limit Adult Websites .

The option to enter private mode will now be gone.

On macOS, the wording of certain options differs slightly, but the overall process is near-identical to iOS:

• Open System Settings via the Apple menu.
• Click on Screen Time in the left panel.
• Under the Restrictions section, click on Content & Privacy .
• Click Content Restrictions .
• Change the Access to Web Content setting to Limit Adult Websites .

Private Browsing will now be unavailable in Safari, although any existing private windows will stay open.

Of course, anyone can re-enable Private Browsing using the same process, in reverse. However, you can use Screen Time’s Lock Screen Time Settings option to set a passcode and enforce the setting permanently.

New AI Features Reportedly Coming to Safari in iOS 18

Safari will gain a series of AI-powered features and UI enhancements in iOS 18 , AppleInsider reports .

• An "Intelligent Search" browser assistant tool that leverages Apple's on-device AI technology to identify key topics and phrases on webpages for summarization purposes.
• A "Web Eraser" tool that allows users to remove unwanted portions of webpages easily. Erasure is persistent, remaining even when revisiting a site unless changes are reverted.
• A new, quick-access menu emerging from the address bar that consolidates page tools, bringing over some functions that currently sit in the Share Sheet and placing them alongside the new tools.

The iPadOS and macOS versions of Safari are also expected to align further. These new features are purportedly undergoing evaluation alongside internal builds of ‌iOS 18‌ and macOS 15 ahead of their unveiling at Apple's Worldwide Developer's Conference (WWDC) in June. Earlier this month, backend code on Apple's servers suggested that a new Safari browsing assistant is in the works, corroborating this report.

Farther in the future, Apple is said to be working on a more powerful version of Visual Look Up that allows users to obtain information on products when browsing through images. The feature is expected to be released sometime in 2025.

Last week, Bloomberg 's Mark Gurman said that ‌iOS 18‌ will "overhaul" many of Apple's built-in apps , including Notes, Mail, Photos , and Fitness. Apple's next-generation operating systems are almost certain to be previewed during Apple's WWDC keynote on June 10, and the updates should be widely released in the fall.

When you use Mail full screen, it’s easy to read and write messages and access your Inbox at the same time—perfect for copying and pasting text or attachments between messages.

Safari opens with reduced screen size

All was fine until I messed with widgets. Now when I open Safari it occupies about 3/4 of the screen size. I have searched for resetting default size and tried the "open last saved screen" option from History after enlarging screen but it does not work. When reopening Safari I keep getting the 3/4 screen size.

Unfortunately this is NOT Working.

It just reopens Safari with the same reduced screen size.

Am I the only person to ever have this problem?

well it is the first I ever heard the issue...

Holding the Option key down will allow for the "Zoom" option, is the only work around I can offer.

This is the full screen real estate but not "Full Screen Mode"

I tried holding the 'Options' key when opening Safari but it makes no difference.

I am aware I can switch to full screen mode after opening, much as I can resize the screen by dragging the corner.

I am wanting Safari to open, occupying the whole screen (rather than "full screen") when first opening, as in fact it was doing before.

Default open to "full screen" would be an improvement on the current situation though.

All I know is that something has changed and I have to resize the screen every time I open Safari.

As I said in my post, the only instructions I can find to reset default screen size is to resize the screen then close and then reopen using the "Reopen Last Closed Tab" command under the 'History' drop down menu.

Yeah thanks sberman.

I have already removed the widgets I put there. Just clock and calendar.

Biggest part of the problem is I'm totally unfamiliar with the terminology.

Started playing with stuff I'd have been better to leave alone after watching a Youtube video.

I seem to recall something about a "sidebar' or something similar.

I suspect it's something I've changed in settings somewhere, without understanding what I'm doing.

Best I can describe it is;

When Safari opens, the top, bottom and right side of screen are as they should be but there is a gap of 1-2 inches on the left side with the Home Screen "wallpaper" showing with a few software shortcut icons that I put there showing.

It's not a big issue. More just a PITA having to resize the window every time I open Safari.

Is there something like what Windows used to have where I can revert to a previous date?

OK Problem solved though I don't know what caused it in the first place.

Turns out that adjusting screen size, closing, then reopening last closed window Does work if you close it from the menu rather than the red button.

Like I said the biggest issue I have is the nomenclatur but give me a break. I'm a lot older than computers are.

All's well that ends well though.
