The Full Monty goes on tour – the cast reveals the naked truth about stage show
With the New Year just around the corner, it's time to go for The Full Monty.
The heartwarming British comedy feels as relevant today as ever it did and it will feature in the West Midlands in January, with a run at The Alexandra, Birmingham, from January 30 to February 3.
The new production stars TV favourites Danny Hatchard (EastEnders), Jake Quickenden (X Factor, I’m A Celebrity…) and Bill Ward (Emmerdale, Coronation Street). We caught up with them about bringing the production to the West Midlands – and why it's still relevant to audiences today.
Twenty five years since the movie, The Full Monty is having a resurgence, with the Disney+ spin-off series and this new touring production. So why has the story has stood the test of time?
Danny Hatchard says: "Is there a more iconic working-class comedy than The Full Monty? I’d argue not. Especially one that covers so many incredibly important topics that are still very relevant today… Fathers’ rights, depression, suicide, impotence, homosexuality, unemployment, body image.
"Tackling important subjects like these whilst adding a sprinkle of nostalgia and a dash of humour takes the audience on a two-hour emotional rollercoaster filled with tears and belly laughter. This show is not only a cocktail of excellence, but also hugely relatable to both men and women."
Jake Quickenden says he loves the humour and the audience participation.
He says: "It’s a story for everyone and it has everything – love, humour, sensitive subjects, the lot. So many people can relate to the characters, they draw on relationships that affect everyone, ex-wife, ex-wife’s new husband, kid that lives with mum, lads, being skint, the list goes on and on.
"It means that’s everyone who watches it can feel like its speaking to them, and then of course, there is the brilliant humour, the dancing and everything that goes with it."
Bill Ward adds: "At its core it revolves around a number of universal, timeless themes: male brotherhood, love, overcoming loss and adversity, and ingenious solutions to universal recognisable problems. This is essentially about six men who’ve lost not only their jobs, but their sense of identity and their dignity. And what they’re prepared to do to get them back."
The play is ultimately a comedy but explores some tough issues around male body image and mental health.
The cast is very aware that that the themes that were relevant then are still very applicable for today.
Hatchard says: "They’re almost indistinguishable. If anything, times are harder now on men (and woman) than they ever have been, especially regarding body image and mental health. Social media is the main driving force of that. Every day people post their idea of 'perfection' all over the internet, and naturally we compare.
"I’d say The Full Monty is just as important now as it was 25 years ago. There used to be more of a sense of community and care for one another, and I feel social media is pushing us further and further away from our natural way of communicating. The Full Monty is a hilarious, thought-provoking show that will make you feel part of a community again. Who doesn’t want to experience that?’
Quickenden says: "A lot of people ask this, and do you know, I think it led the way with a lot of these conversations – it was 97’ when then film came out, men didn’t really share their issues with each other and it was still pretty taboo to be open about mental health and being gay.
"This story reminds us of lots of things that are more accepted today but still very important – talk to people if you are feeling down – there is always another way out other than suicide. Being yourself in the world is nothing to be ashamed of.
"Your body is the only one you have, love it no matter how it looks, everyone likes something different. Just because you are old doesn’t mean you can’t do something… there are just so many messages in here for everyone."
Ward says "Simon Beaufoy, the play's the writer, came to see the cast during rehearsal, and he was very clear it wasn’t a comedy at all.
“A play with jokes, is how he described it," says Ward. "It is of course very funny indeed, but the comedy actually comes from the very real tragedy that all these characters are facing in their lives… different circumstances, different starting points, but real grief and tragedy nevertheless."
There’s a brotherhood between the men in the play, so how have the cast members bonded as they prepare for the show?
Hatchard says: "The casting team have done an incredible job. I love and respect every member of this cast very much. They say time flies when you’re having fun. Well, two hours feels like 20 minutes on stage with this lot. We’re all just a bunch of good mates having a wonderful time. Every scene feels effortless, and I trust them all implicitly."
Quickenden says: "I don’t want to sound cliché but literally everyone is so close. Usually you get little cliques grow but we genuinely all get on so well, and because a lot of the scenes include all of us, we just have a laugh and get closer and closer every day.
"Then there are all the memories we are making as we tour the UK and all those different theatres, hotels, lunch breaks all end up building to create this huge happy family. Plus, we are all hilarious which helps! I would say Alice (Schofield) is the Robin to my Batman – we are joined at the hip!"
Quickenden says he is looking forward to touring the production, with big venues in cities like Birmingham, Manchester and Liverpool. The tour starts in Liverpool's Empire Theatre in the new year and moves from Birmingham to Liverpool's Opera House before a tour of the UK that ends in Canterbury in April.
He says: "I'm looking forward to showing this to big audiences. When you know you’ve got something good you want to share it with the world. So, the bigger the audience the better.
"It sounds obvious but literally being somewhere different every week or so keeps the energy alive, we know that all the audiences are seeing it for the first time, and it helps the electric keep buzzing onstage. Plus, we get a chance to potter about during the day and see all these different places and hang out with cast members. It’s also pretty cool that friends and family from all over the UK can try and get to a show as there is usually one heading to a theatre near them."
Ward adds: "There’s an awful lot of heart, warmth, and joy in this production, and it’s a huge amount of fun to do. Sharing a bit of that with the good people of the UK in these otherwise rather bleak times can only be a good thing.
"The show is Pure unadulterated happiness. This is a very beautiful, heartwarming and at times very moving story. It’s also very, very funny indeed and an absolute riot at the end. A properly banging night out at the theatre.
"The main thing is – be yourself, never give up, never listen to what anyone thinks and just do you! The story is sad at times, but every character overcomes their worries in some way and ends with success! It’s a feel-good show which keeps people laughing even when they are crying."

ANTHONY ANDERSON RALLIES FELLOW MALE CELEBRITIES
TO BARE ALL FOR PROSTATE, TESTICULAR AND COLORECTAL CANCER TESTING AND RESEARCH
STAR-STUDDED CAST INCLUDES ANDERSON, WHO ALSO EXECUTIVE-PRODUCES, PLUS TAYE DIGGS,
NFL’S CHRIS JONES, TYLER POSEY, BRUNO TONIOLI AND JAMES VAN DER BEEK
Inspired by the beloved, award-winning 1997 film, The Real Full Monty is an all-new two-hour special in which a daring group of male celebrities will volunteer to bare all to raise awareness for prostate, testicular and colorectal cancer testing and research. The special will air on Monday, December 9 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX.
Emmy- and Golden Globe-nominated actor, comedian and producer Anthony Anderson ( We Are Family, 75 th Emmy Awards , black-ish ) rallies a cast of male celebrities, including himself, Taye Diggs ( All American, How Stella Got Her Groove Back) , Chris Jones (3x Super Bowl Champion, Kansas City Chiefs), Tyler Posey ( Teen Wolf) , Bruno Tonioli ( Dancing with the Stars ) and James Van Der Beek ( Dawson’s Creek , Varsity Blues ) to encourage men to get checked and strip the stigma around prostate, testicular and colorectal cancer.
During the two-hour special, Anderson will lead Diggs, Jones, Posey, Tonioli and Van Der Beek as they train and rehearse for the most revealing performance of their careers, culminating with a big strip-tease dance, choreographed by Emmy Award-winner Mandy Moore (Choreographer for So You Think you Can Dance , La La Land , and Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour), where they will bare all in front of a live audience. Leading up to the final disrobing, the men will expand their limits, test their modesty and strengthen their bond with a series of rehearsals and experiences, both private and public, designed to build confidence and remove them far from their comfort zone and forge a brotherhood. Along the way, each of the celebrities will share their personal stories of how cancer has impacted their lives.
FOX’s all-new special is based on the international unscripted format first broadcast on the U.K.’s ITV in 2017, garnering awards, massive viewership and critical praise. The Full Monty final tour dates and casting announced
The Olivier Award-nominated show will embark on a final tour
12 March 2018
The Sheffield Theatres production of The Full Monty will embark on a final tour in 2018, opening in Cheltenham in September.
Directed by Coronation Street actor and former Full Monty cast member Rupert Hill, the show's cast will be led by Dancing on Ice winner Gary Lucy ( Hollyoaks , EastEnders ), Andrew Dunn ( Dinnerladies ), Louis Emerick ( Benidorm ), Joe Gill ( Emmerdale ), Kai Owen ( Torchwood ) and James Redmond ( Hollyoaks ). Further casting is to be announced.
Set in Sheffield, the show follows six laid-off steelworkers who decide to go into the business they call show. It is based on the 1997 comedy film of the same name, which went on to win both a BAFTA and Academy Award, outselling Titanic at the UK box office.
The play was written in 2013 and made its debut in Sheffield before running in the West End in 2014, going on to be nominated for Best New Comedy at the Olivier Awards. It features hit songs from artists including Donna Summer, Hot Chocolate and Tom Jones.
The new UK and Ireland tour will open at the Everyman Theatre in Cheltenham before visiting Chester, Dublin, Killarney, York, Bromley, Swindon, Birmingham, Darlington, Stoke, Norwich and Sheffield with more dates to be added. The production has design by Robert Jones and choreography by Ian West.
The new UK tour of The Full Monty opens at Everyman Theatre in Cheltenham on 2 September.

Things To Do
Theater | review: ‘the full monty’ at paramount theatre will have you seeing this musical anew.
For years, I’ve reviewed this oft-revived 2000 Broadway musical as mediocre material, in part because I decided years ago that the decision to change the location to Buffalo, New York, while still closely following the movie’s screenplay meant that the story got stuck in mid-Atlantic nebulousness. It was always a fun, blue-collar show, filled with gags about the body insecurity of well-meaning, middle-aged men. But it’s never been seen as one of the best of populist contemporary musicals.
But on Sunday afternoon at the Paramount Theatre in Aurora, I changed my mind about some stuff.
“The Full Monty” has a David Yazbek score; Yazbek went on to score “The Band’s Visit” and “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels,” shows more in his stylistic wheelhouse, and his music for “The Full Monty” tends to get overlooked. But sitting there Sunday at director Jim Corti’s production, I was reminded that it’s a beautiful song suite. “Breeze Off the River,” “You Walk with Me” and “You Rule My World” all are lovely, haunting melodies. “The Full Monty” is not all “Let it Go” and jiggling bellies. And if you look closely at Terrence McNally’s book, you see a moving dissection of masculinity, a clear-eyed and empathetic treatment of how the loss of the dignity of well-paying blue-collar work undermines self-esteem.
These days, producers would stick a few familiar pop songs into something like this. “The Full Monty” actually went a classier route, as hard as that may be to believe about a show about a Chippendales-like group of stripping steelworkers.

I’d say this is a title ripe for one of those City Center reconsiderations, focused on the score, or maybe even a production by a radical director who could unpack its themes anew. And, yes, I’m talking about “The Full Monty.” On the one hand, you’d never write some of the politically incorrect lines therein today, let alone find a producer brave enough to stage them for the first time. On the other, time actually has been good to the piece. It takes a while for a high-quality score to establish itself as such.
Corti’s production is sufficiently honest to tease out all of these themes, not in a radical way but in a fashion that elevates the title and the characters. I’ve seen choreography for this show that mines every cliche going, but Tor Campbell mostly goes in a different, more exploratory direction, even if he can’t get any of his guys to walk up walls. There’s an emotionally resonant cast, led by Ben Mayne and Jared David Michael Grant and featuring (among others) Liz Pazik, Rebecca Hurd, Veronica Garza, Jackson Evans, Diego Vazquez Gomez, Bernard Dotson and Adam Fane, who dives deep here. And while Michelle Lilly’s set doesn’t always visually cohere, it mostly does the job. And, of course, you get to hear the full original orchestrations at Paramount, which is, I think, what moved me the most, given the quality of this music.
Sure, the marketing is all about baring it all and so on. But “The Full Monty,” if you see it done right as is the case here, strips away more than you might think.
Chris Jones is a Tribune critic.
