Ultra Trail World Tour: Rankings and Trends by Country

by Chase Parnell – September 23, 2019

Photos by iRunFar

It’s late-September. The pinnacle of the ultra running season, UTMB, is long gone, and the Ultra Trail World Tour rankings for the year are pretty much a lock. Only three races remain and I don’t see many of the big names coming out for Salomon Cappadocia Ultra-Trail in Turkey, Javelina Jundred in Arizona, USA, or Ultra-Trail Cape Town in South Africa.

The UTWT is known here in America, but it hasn’t quite taken hold like it has abroad. I don’t believe your average ultra running fans are pulling up the UTWT rankings after each race like NFL fans analyze the standings every Monday morning. But that’s okay, I think we’ll get there as the UTWT continues to grow. I recently became curious about how the USA was competing on the global scene and found myself perusing the rankings after UTMB to see how the big dance flipped everything on its head.

After some digging, I decided to run the numbers to selfishly better understand where the USA stacked up, but also to see which other countries have been performing well on the most important circuit in our sport.

Using “cross country style” scoring, below are the results for the past three years. By the way, if you didn’t run in high school, “cross country style” scoring is where you assign point values for the place a runner finishes in. If a runner finishes first, she will earn 1 point. Finishing 77th would earn 77 points. The top 5 runners from each country score, so obviously the country with the lowest score wins.

Before we get into it, a little on how the UTWT rankings are calculated. Your annual ranking is based on your two best finishes at races on the tour. Simple enough. Different races, however, score you different amounts of points. If you get third at UTMB (a “Series Bonus” race), that is worth more than a 3rd at Western States (a “Series” race).

Here we go.

UTWT rankings and trends

Three Take-Aways on the Men’s Side:

First. Pau Capell and Spain are crushing.

It’s a bit of a mystery to me why Spain has all of the sudden risen to the top of the heap. I mean, they obviously have mountains in Spain, and a lot of them, but they’re not in the alps nor are they exceptionally known for their mountain culture or running generally. Kilian is from Spain though, so there’s that. It does make me wonder though if there has been a concerted effort by the Spaniards to make this happen. Is there a governing body galvanizing their talent and supporting their runners in a unique or innovative way? What caused this recent dominance? Something to keep tabs on for sure.

Second. China is rapidly improving.

In 2017, China wasn’t even in the top 5. Their top runner finished #67 overall. In 2018, they jumped up to 5th place as a “team”. And now, in 2019, they’ve found themselves in 2nd place and they have the 2nd ranked runner, Jiasheng Shen, who is only 24 years old. The consensus seems to be that ultra running is blowing up in China. Their rise in the rankings at the elite level seem to support that, with no signs of slowing down. We may very well see China at the top of the pile in 2020.

Third. USA has been strong but had a rough 2019.

Everyone is always talking about how difficult of a time Americans have at UTMB. That’s a narrative that is a bit stale and, really, not true. We’ve done quite well there if you look at the top ten finishers over the last 4-6 years as a whole. We just have never had an individual male win it outright and that doesn’t sit well with us. When looking at the UTWT rankings, we were 2nd place as a team in both 2017 and 2018. Not too shabby, am I right? We did take a bit of a dive this year though with a 4th place finish, but that really just boils down to the fact that we had an exceptionally rough year at UTMB. Jason Schlarb was our top American in 19th place in 24:27. In 2017 alone, USA had six men run faster than that.

classement ultra trail world tour

Three Take-Aways on the Women’s Side:

First. Similar to Pau Capell and Spain, Courtney Dauwalter and the USA are absolutely dominating.

The USA has ranked #1 as a team in both 2018 and 2019 and was #3 in 2017. It’s difficult to speculate why that is. Are American women more empowered and encouraged to run ultras? Are American women just tougher, grittier? Their rival is the French, who have been nipping at their heels the last two years, but they’ve lacked that true superstar like they have on the men’s side in Thevenard or D’haene. As more and more elite level American women enter the sport, the USA is going to continue to be difficult to beat. The pipeline from NCAA collegiate running to professional ultra running is only going to improve as the sport becomes more accessible and frankly, more popular and financially lucrative.

Second. China strikes again.

Are you sensing a theme here? Again, China was a total non-factor on the women’s side in 2017, they were 5th in 2018, and now 3rd in 2019. They are improving rapidly and with a population of 1.4 billion, the talent pool is DEEP. The population of the entirety of Europe is roughly 750 million so China has twice as many people as Europe and many times more than that of an England, France, or Spain. I’m excited to see if China’s trend levels out or if they continue to skyrocket towards the top and take over the sport.

Third. What the hell happened to Australia?

The Aussies were second in 2017 and then they fell off the face of the planet in 2018 and 2019. Now granted the UTWT is very Euro-centric so it’s tough for those down under to travel all the way to Europe for the big races, but still, I’m curious how their success dried up so quickly on the international stage. Maybe 2017 was just a fluke year, I don’t know. If anyone out there has any insight on this, I’d love to hear about it in the comments section below.

That’s it folks. I hope you enjoyed a bit of a deeper dive into the UTWT rankings and a look at the “cross country style” results. Without a doubt, you have to take these rankings with a grain of salt but I do think they’re a better indicator of a country’s overall performance than, say, the ITRA Trail World Championships, which rarely fields a country’s best squad.

I’m excited to see how things pan out over the next couple of years. Will the strength of Spain on the men’s side and the USA on the women’s side hold up? Will China continue their rise? When will the Aussies rebound? And when will we start to see African countries breaking into the top 5? Will they be the next big wave?

Only time will tell.

Ultra-Trail World Tour: Rankings, Support, and Standings Presentation

An Ultra-Trail World Tour session to inform elite runners about tour ranking, assistance allocation, scoring, and more.

The first full weekend of December, many of the world’s top trail ultrarunners gathered near San Francisco, California to run, crew, pace, cheer, or otherwise take part in The North Face Endurance Challenge 50-Mile Championships . With so many top runners together… and 2014 race calendar planning in full swing, the Ultra-Trail World Tour held a presentation and Q&A session to provide the runners with additional information about how the UTWT will work at the front of the field, including the ITRA rankings, how assistance will be allocated, and how the series will be scored in 2014. We taped the hour-long session and provide it below.

During and after the session, tour organizers promised to provide additional information (such as example scenarios for race scoring). We will add that information to this article as it becomes available.

Ultrarunning's iconic UTMB race is looming – here's who's looking for a podium spot

Who's planning on being at the starting line in Chamonix, and which runners hope to be first to the finish

The start of the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc, 2017

In 9 days' time on Friday, August 30, thousands of the world’s most ambitious trail runners will lace up their best trail running shoes and set off from Chamonix on a punishing race around Mont Blanc.

Last year, Jim Walmsley made history at the UTMB when he won the race in just 19:37:42, shaving 12 minutes off Killian Jornet's 2022 record. Will this year bring a repeat success for Walmsley, or will his thunder be stolen? Over in the women's race, who will fill the void left by Courtney Dauwalter, especially now we know that Katharina Hartmuth isn't starting?

This iconic race is generally considered to be one of the most difficult trail ultra marathons in the world and we’ll be there live next week reporting on all the action. In the meantime, read on for who's starting this year, and predictions for who might be a top contender for a podium finish.

What is the UTMB?

If this is the first you're hearing about it, the UTMB course covers a ferocious 106 miles (177 km) and entails a whopping 32,700 feet (10,000 meters) of incline, which is roughly the equivalent of running Everest and then tacking on a Colorado 14er at the end.

Encircling the Mont Blanc Massif, the route takes competitors in a counterclockwise direction from France, through mountainous areas of Italy and Switzerland before returning back to Chamonix. The maximum cutoff for the race is 46.5 hours, but clearly the runners below are aiming to come in well below that time.

second placed France's Mathieu Blanchard (L), winner Spain's Kilian Jornet (C), and third placed Britains Thomas Evans (R) celebrate on the podium of 19th edition of the Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc

What’s different this year?

So far this year, the officials at the UTMB haven't announced any changes to the route and the biggest news has been the addition of Hoka as the title sponsor , which seems a much better choice than the previous title sponsor of car company Dascia, which caused runners like Jornet to call out the event for environmental reasons.

There's also the fact that Walmsley set his astonishing record last year in a pair of Hokas and the running shoe brand was founded near Chamonix to make it all seem very fitting. However, the real difference Hoka makes to the event is that it has greatly increased the prize money , which means that the male and female winners of the race will receive more than double last year’s prize amounts – $21,500 (€20,000) each.

Who’s the favorite to win?

In a race like the UTMB, anything can happen, and while this year's starting lineup has some obvious runners to focus on (Walmsley, Blanchard, Grangier) there's still plenty of mystery and nothing for us to do but wait and see. Here are some favorites for the top spots:

Jim Walmsley wins the UTMB 2023

Men’s favorites for the 2024 UTMB

There's no doubt that Walmsley wants to hold onto his top spot, especially since it took him several tries to even make the podium and it's fair to assume that he's now found his stride and will be the runner to beat. He won the Western States Endurance Run back in June, proving he's in fighting form, and has had a couple of months to recover.

Last year's second-placed Zach Miller isn't starting and was embroiled in some drama with UTMB organizers earlier this year after sending an email to other runners expressing his concern about the growth of the race, so he's not going to keep Walmsley on his toes, but here's who might:

  • Germain Grangier: The French runner thrilled local spectators when he came third last year and his Instagram account shows he's spent the past 10 months training in high alpine zones. Unlike some other runners on this list, he hasn't done much in the way of high-profile competition in that time, so we're feeling some fresh legs coming on.
  • Mathieu Blanchard: The Frenchman just missed the podium last year, but he came second in 2022 and he's already won a couple of ultras this year.
  • Ludovic Pommeret: Another Frenchman, Pommeret came fifth last year, fourth in 2021 and third in 2019 so he's always one to keep an eye on, especially as he's already won the Hardrock 100 this year.
  • Hannes Namberger: The German runner placed eighth last year but nabbed first place in the 120k Lavaredo race in Italy this year, edging out Tom Evans.
  • Tom Evans: Last year, the British runner was considered a frontrunner, but had a rough night when digestive issues led to him getting lost and disoriented, ending his race at the hospital instead of the finish line. Making matters worse, he was mugged on the trail while training in South Africa late last year. This year, he says he's changed up his training plan to include more altitude training , so let's hope that gets him to the finish this year.

US trailer Courtney Dauwalter celebrates as she crosses the finish line to win the 20th edition of The Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc

Women’s favorites for the 2024 UTMB

Last year saw Courtney Dauwalter take her third win at the UTMB and complete her hat trick of winning the UTMB, the Western States 100 and the Hardrock 100 in a single year. This year, it looks like she's put her energy on the Hardrock 100, Mt Fuji 100 miler and Transgrancanaria , all of which she won comfortably.

Meanwhile, Last year's second-placed Katharina Hartmuth recently announced ongoing knee issues so it seems everything's up for grabs. Will any of these runners fill the void?

  • Blandine L’Hirondel: The French runner came back from a foot injury to claim second place last year. She’s the two-time trail running world champion but this year hasn't brought any long-distance wins yet.
  • Fuzhao Xiang: The Chinese runner battled hard for second place in last year's race and has seen a few podiums in shorter ultras already this year.
  • Maite Maiora Elizondo: The Spanish runner placed fifth in 2023 and she's seen a lot of competition already this year, including a third-place finish in a 110 km race in her home country earlier this year, so her legs may not be fresh, but she's got more experience.
  • Eszter Csillag: The Hungarian DNFd at last year's race, but she's seen a few podiums since including a third place in the Western States 100.

Whether it’s incumbent favorites or fresh-faced newcomers that take the podium this time around, we’re expecting an exciting race and wish the best of luck to every athlete out there on the trail.

The Ultra-Trail World Tour series comes to an end

The new utmb world series will replace the ultra-trail world tour, adding two new races.

classement ultra trail world tour

The Ultra-Trail World Tour announced yesterday that after eight years, the series is coming to an end. A new and extraordinary adventure is on the horizon as the new UTMB World Series begins in 2022.

The new UTMB World Series will add two new trail ultramarathons in North America. Earlier this year,  the UTMB signed a partnership with the Ironman Group to help develop the new series, set to start in 2022. The Canyons Endurance Runs (held in Auburn, Calif.) and Speedgoat Marathon Races in Utah will now be additional qualifiers for UTMB Mont-Blanc.

classement ultra trail world tour

This year’s UTMB World Series Majors will take place in Val d’Aran, Spain and Hong Kong (TransLantau by UTMB). The majors offer double the number of points of other UTMB World Series events, increasing an athlete’s chance to be selected in the 2023 UTMB Mont-Blanc registration lottery.

Reid Coolsaet to run Western States

“The UTMB World Series Majors offers additional qualification chances for the UTMB World Series Finals with the top 10 male and top 10 female runners in each of the 50K, 100K and 100M categories automatically winning a spot on the 2023 start line,” per UTMB World Series press release. “Runners will also collect double the amount of Running Stones compared to other UTMB World Series Events, increasing their chance of being selected through the UTMB Mont-Blanc 2023 registration lottery.”

How to enter the 2021 UTMB lottery

The Canyons Endurance Runs will take place on April 23, 2022, in Auburn, Calif. along the Western States Trail, featuring three distances: 100K, 50K and 25K. The Speedgoat Mountain Races, held on the slopes of Snowbird Resort in Utah, in July, include 13K, 28K and a 50K event and almost 12,000 feet of climbing at 9,000 feet of altitude.

The Western States 100 is also part of the series. “We remain in charge of how we put on the race,” said race director  Craig Thornley. “That said, we are excited about the new UTMB World Series.”

UTS Joins the Ultra-Trail® World Tour

The 2021 UTWT calendar has just been revealed and we are extremely excited to announce that Ultra-Trail ® Snowdonia will join the Ultra-Trail ® World Tour from 2021 and beyond!

This announcement marks a significant development for the British and Irish ultrarunning scenes and has been several years in the making.

classement ultra trail world tour

With inauguration to the Ultra-Trail ® World Tour next year, UTS will be part of a global series of emblematic races around the world, sitting alongside the most prestigious ultras that are sure to be at the top of any serious ultrarunner’s bucket-list, including Western States and UTMB.

Next June, the world’s elite ultrarunners from far and wide will descend upon Snowdonia to battle it out at UTS 100 for lucrative UTWT series points, in what promises to be one of the most competitive fields ever seen on these shores at an ultra-race. At the end of the season, top-ten ranked male/female runners will enjoy their share of a huge €64,000 prize pool, with the overall winners claiming a cool €10,000.

classement ultra trail world tour

While living in Chamonix during the summer of 2017 and training for CCC, UTS Race Director Michael Jones had the vision to launch an ‘Alpine-style’ ultra, similar in nature to UTMB, in the UK. An event that would in due course bring the UTWT to the UK and in doing so, put Snowdonia firmly on the global trail running map. In 2018, his vision was realised with the inaugural UTS, which has gone from strength to strength since then.

Mike explains: “Since launch in 2018 I have worked relentlessly to develop UTS and shape it into an event worthy of hosting the Ultra-Trail ® World Tour. It has been very rewarding to see that the vision I had has not been lost amongst the event’s previous competitors, many of whom no doubt entered having identified UTS as a new benchmark mountain ultra-race for the UK”

classement ultra trail world tour

As a UTWT 500 Point event, finishers of any UTS race will collect 3 highly lucrative ‘Running Stones’, which can be used towards entry to UTMB events in 2022 onwards and treble your chance of getting a place in the lottery. Read more about this concept  HERE .

And for those lucky to already be racing at UTMB next August, in terms of date and nature of challenge, UTS offers the perfect dress-rehearsal event to help ensure you are suitably well prepared upon arrival in Chamonix. Also, thanks to being part of the tour, UTS will soon join the UTWT Virtual Club (more info HERE ), so keep an eye out for a new, international, UTS-themed virtual event this winter.

classement ultra trail world tour

“The routes you have found are challenging and the right mix of rough Welsh terrain and nice rocky well-made paths with lots of really good views, taking me to places on routes that I have never thought to go… The organisation is superb, very friendly with great checkpoints serving a wide selection of food. I look forward to returning in 2021! ” - Nicky Spinks , 2018 UTS 50 Champion

classement ultra trail world tour

"I had never been to Wales before; I had never done a race with so much vertical gain... I didn't know what to expect so I had just one goal: to finish. We had amazing views, a challenging route, long climbs and technical descents. I had never felt as broken as I did on the last descent, but at that moment I knew that I'd definitely be coming back for more!"  - Marcis Gubats , 2018 UTS 100 Champion

Already, UTS is notorious as an event with some of, if not the most challenging race routes in Europe, justly earning it the strapline ‘Beautiful beyond belief. Savage beyond reason’ . Snowdonia National Park offers in abundance, both the terrain and trails to create a highly aspirational, technical and challenging ultra-event; a very worthy host for the Ultra-Trail ® World Tour circuit.

classement ultra trail world tour

With routes that explore the area’s most scenic valleys, rugged peaks and epic landscapes, UTS’ race routes are also truly the most beautiful in the UK. Following what has been a very difficult year for event organisers globally, we look forward to welcoming trail runners from around the world to Snowdonia to experience what makes UTS so special, here in Wales next June.

Next year’s UTS will take place on the weekend of 4-6 th June 2021, with a reserve date of 10-12 th September, should Covid-19 affect event planning. Now in its fourth year, there are three race distances on offer: 50/100/165kms, featuring 3300/6700/10,000m+ elevation gain, respectively.

2021 UTS entries are now live and with over 500 of the 800 available entries already taken, these races will sell out very soon!
