It's Not Hou It's Me

Houston & travel blog, your weekend guide to canoeing caddo lake.

Canoeing at Caddo Lake should be on every Texan’s bucket list. The lake has miles upon miles of canoe trails, one of the largest collections of flooded cypress trees, and even some Sasquatch sightings! After seeing the magical pictures of the cypress trees framed at sunset over the water, I knew I had to plan a trip there. Just four hours from Houston, Caddo Lake was the perfect weekend destination for a break from city life to immerse myself in some wonderful nature!

canoeing caddo lake

What is Caddo Lake?

Caddo Lake is the second largest natural lake in the South on the border between Texas and Louisiana. The lake gets its name from the Caddo Native Americans who first lived in the area. Caddo Lake has one of the largest collections of flooded cypress forests in the US. Caddo Lake State Park protects some of the lake area, but there is so much beyond the state park to explore!

Where to Stay at Caddo Lake

The nearby towns surrounding Caddo Lake offer a few quaint places to stay. I looked at several towns in the area, but ultimately decided to focus my search on Uncertain, Texas . Legend has it that the town got its name from someone filling out a form for the government and didn’t know what to put so filled out the space with “Uncertain”. The grand town has a population of less than 100 people, a small general store, a few diners, and a weekend flea market.

Caddo Lake State Park

One option I considered was renting a cabin at the Caddo Lake State Park . The cabins are the cheapest options, but also come with minimal amenities. If you’re down to bring your own bedding and cooking utensils it could be a cool spot to camp out. I decided against it because I heard the cooler canoeing trails were located elsewhere.

Cottages at Caddo Lake

I ultimately decided to rent a furnished cottage on Caddo Lake. The area offers few hotel options and very little selection on Airbnb, but I was luckily able to find a few places with a online search. The options are mom & pop run places with set rates and websites that haven’t been updated since 2004. During peak season from March to November, the cottages book up quickly and I had to call around a few times to find availability.

hodgepodge cottages

I ultimately booked a room at Snug #4 at Hodgepodge Cottages in Uncertain, Texas. I chose the location because they offered free canoe rentals with booking and it was close to some well rated canoe trails. Other options I considered were Spatterdock and Johnson’s Ranch . Shady Glade Resort and Crip’s Camp were highlighted destinations on my canoe map. Once I got on the water and went canoeing, I paddled past many of these places as they were all a few blocks away. Here’s a list of all the lodging in Uncertain, Texas.

The cell service was pretty spotty while canoeing Caddo Lake, so I was on airplane mode for most of the trip and only logged onto a Wifi successfully a few times. It was a seriously wonderful weekend to disconnect and immerse myself in nature.

What to Do at Caddo Lake

The number one draw for me to visit Caddo Lake was to go canoeing! The lake has over 50 miles of trails stretching from Texas to Louisiana. Our cottage had a dock and we were easily able to access the water. Over the course of the weekend, we went on three 2-3 hour canoe trips along the following trails: Cathedral, Turtle Shell, and Old Folks Playground. In total it amounted to about 14 leisurely miles.

caddo lake canoe trails

Navigating the trails was surprisingly easy. I borrowed the laminated map from the cottage to get around, but once we were out on the water it was straightforward to follow the giant wooden posts marking the different routes. Each route was labeled with a letter and we never really got lost.

In mid-October, we seemed to have the whole lake to ourselves. Occasionally we would see a fishing boat or a jet ski fly by, but usually we were on our own and it was truly peaceful.

It’s hard to chose when the most magical time to be on the lake is. We woke up early and watched the sunrise both days we were at Caddo Lake, as well as watch the sunset in the evening. The colors are incredible and vibrant! Paddling at sunrise in the early morning fog was eerie but beautiful. I felt like I was on the movie set of Pirates of the Caribbean.

caddo lake canoe trails

During our trip, we saw so much wildlife! Mostly we paddled around birds, but we also saw a fox, lots of turtles, and some deer. Caddo Lake is known for it’s alligators, but we didn’t see any (despite paddling down Alligator Bayou and everything!). No Sasquatch sighting either.

It was a bit heartbreaking to see the Giant Salvinia taking over the lake. Giant Salvinia is a fast-spreading aquatic fern that doubles in size every few days and kills all life under the surface. It was introduced by accident by boaters and has since been a serious threat to the lake’s existence. Efforts to combat it have included using herbicides and beetles which are slowly curbing the weeds growth over the past decade. The blooming lily pads were gorgeous though!

Other Caddo Lake Activities

The towns around the lake offer several water-centric activities such as boat tours and fishing expeditions ( here’s a list! ). You’ll need to call ahead to book those.

Lafitte’s Caddo Lake Grocery is the local corner store with lake basics like ice and beer, but doesn’t offer much in terms of fresh foods, so plan accordingly. I would recommend grabbing groceries at the Kroger in Karnack which is a 30 minute drive away. We bought breakfast items, sandwich fixings, ingredients for simple pasta, and plenty of beer. Our cottage had a grill and a fire pit, but we needed charcoal and lighter fluid to get those going.

We ate breakfast once at the Shady Glade Cafe . They served basic breakfast items like unlimited hot coffee, eggs plates, grits, and toast. On the first and third weekends of the month, Uncertain has a flea market.

What I Packed

In October the weather was a bit brisk, so I brought layers to help work through the heat and the cold depending on what time of day I was out. These are some of my things that I recommend packing when you’re getting out on the water:

  • Water proof bag for canoeing — I got one of these for the Buffalo Bayou Regatta and it’s a game changer!
  • Water proof picnic blanket
  • Small picnic cooler
  • Water proof phone case
  • HOU Hat (I bring this everywhere!)
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Hand sanitizer – camp bathrooms are gross. I like  this natural option !
  • Sunscreen – Coola White Tea Face Sunscreen  is my favorite.
  • Tissues  – again camp bathrooms.
  • Water bottle — I love my  Swell  that insulates! Sometimes I put hot tea inside to drink when I’m cold.

P.S. I earn money from some of those links. Thanks for supporting!

Canoeing Caddo Lake

Karnack, Texas

Description

Added by Korey Taylor

The distance is 7.6 miles round trip and takes ~3-4hrs. There is an entrance fee of $3/ person (free for children under 12) and you can rent kayaks/canoes for $10/ hr (discount with a Texas State Parks Pass). With incredible scenery and year-round kayaking/canoeing this is the only natural lake in Texas.

To start this trail you'll enter Caddo Lake State Park located on Park Road 2, Karnack, Texas. Immediately after turning into the entrance, you'll see the park headquarters where the park rangers will get you set up with a key to a canoe. You'll drive to Saw Mill Pond after that to find a small cabin that has life vests and your designated canoe next to it.

After launching your canoe into Saw Mill Pond, head to the opposite end where you'll find the bayou and turn right. You'll follow the bayou through Hell's Half Acre and end in Carter's Chute where you'll turn around and head back to Saw Mill Pond. This canoeing trail is great because if you have the time and desire to do the full 7.6 miles, you can, but if you're interested in only paddling around for about an hour Saw Mill Pond offers spectacular views of the unique Bald Cypress trees that are only found in the Southeastern region of America.

If you don't live near Caddo Lake and you're visiting during the cooler seasons (October- April) there is a campground to stay the night in. For those muggy summer months, camping in Texas isn't for the faint of heart. You might want to consider renting a cabin in the park to find some relief from the heat. Either way, make sure to bring some firewood, hotdogs, and marshmallows to enjoy a day of canoeing and an evening away from the city.

Enchantingly Mysterious

Caddo Lake is beautiful, mysterious, enchanting, and awesome! There are lots of great places to rent right on the lake that have canoes and bicycles for your use. Caddo has been our family favorite my entire life, for fishing, hunting, canoeing and just relaxing. It is an East Texas Treasure!

I LOVE Caddo Lake. It is like something from out of this world. They offer canoe rentals overnight and for the weekend additional to by the hour. Some of the campsites have direct access to the lake (63-65) and would be perfect for the long rentals plus you could take the canoe for a nighttime paddle! Highly recommend it if you have not been before.

10 Oct Caddo Lake in Texas: Boat Tours and Things to Do

Caddo Lake State Park has an array of cypress trees, bayous, ponds, and sloughs in northeastern Texas and northwestern Louisiana. There are not just a few cypress trees, but instead Caddo Lake holds the largest cypress forest in the entire world. Additionally, a vast variety of species have made their homes in the state park, for example alligators, snakes, birds, armadillos, and more. Whether you plan to spend the day or the whole weekend at Caddo Lake State Park, there are so many things to do to fill up your time. For example, you can rent a canoe and paddle along the water, bring some fishing poles to try and catch some fish, book a boat tour, and/or set up a tent to camp for the night.

I visited Caddo Lake while on a road trip from Pennsylvania to California with friends, and it was one of my favorite  stops along the way. The lake was beautiful and unlike any other attraction we visited on the road trip. If you need some help packing for your road trip, then check out my summer road trip packing list as well as my winter road trip packing list .

8) recommended items to bring.

Where is Caddo Lake State Park located? Caddo Lake State Park is located in northeastern Texas , specifically the town of Karnack.  Moreover, Caddo Lake itself even extends into northwest Louisiana. If you are looking for an exact location to visit, well that depends on what you would like to do within the state park. The following sections will hold more information on where to go for a view of the lake, swamp tours, boat launches, etc.

For reference, the state park is approximately three hours east of Dallas and four hours north of Houston. While it might be a bit far away for a day trip, it is the perfect distance for a weekend getaway. If you are planning a Texas road trip, then I definitely recommend you add the Reunion Tower in Dallas as well as Palo Duro Canyon State Park in Canyon to your itinerary.

There is plenty of parking available within the state park. Simply drive to the attraction you wish to visit, and there will most likely be a parking lot connected to it.

Nearby Lodging

Are there hotels near Caddo Lake? There are a variety of accommodation options near Caddo Lake State Park; the majority of them are within the nearby towns of Marshall and Jefferson. One of the top-rated stays in the area is The Steamboat Inn . It is a bed and breakfast that also includes an outdoor fireplace as well as a garden. On the other hand, one of the cheapest stays in the area is the Historic Kahn Hotel . Even though it is a cheaper option, it still has very good reviews.

Additionally, you can choose to stay within the state park at a campground or in a cabin. The park has over 40 campground sites available. The different campground sites offer different amenities. For example, you can book a full-hookup site or a site that only has electricity. Moreover, the park has 10 cabins available of varying sizes. For example, there are cabins that can accommodate two, four, and six people.

Check out the Caddo Lake cabin page and the Caddo Lake campsite page for more information. They provide information on nightly fees, number of sites available, number of people allowed per site, amenities included, and more.

Nearby Airports

What airports are close to Caddo Lake? The closest airports to Caddo Lake are city and country airports. Unfortunately these airports do not generally offer flight options for the public. That being said, you need to instead consider nearby regional or international airports.

For example, the closest regional airport is the Shreveport Regional Airport. It is located only 40 minutes southeast from the state park. Additionally, the East Texas Regional Airport is the next closest regional airport at 55 minutes southwest. The third closest regional airport is the Texarkana Regional Airport at one hour and five minutes northeast. All three regional airports mentioned above offer domestic flights only. Nevertheless, you can always fly from a regional airport to an international airport and continue on from there.

On the other hand, the closest international airport is the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport in Dallas. It is located approximately three hours west from the park.

Please keep in mind there are no public transportation options available from any of the airports mentioned above to Caddo Lake in Texas. You thus need to rent a car from the airport or utilize a ride share service such as Uber. However, I recommend you rent a car so that you have the freedom to explore the park as you wish.

3) The Best Time to Visit – Caddo Lake in Texas

When is the best time to visit Caddo Lake State Park? The best time to visit Caddo Lake in Texas is during the spring or fall seasons. These seasons generally offer more moderate temperatures compared to the summer and winter seasons. For example, temperatures in the summer can often exceed 90 degrees Fahrenheit (~32 Celsius). Temperatures in the winter can often drop between 40 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit (~four to 10 Celsius). The first freeze of the winter season occurs in the middle of November. The last freeze before spring arrives occurs in the middle of March.

Moreover, the fall season also brings the changing colors of the leaves. You can thus view Caddo Lake surrounded by colors of green, orange, red, etc. Just try to imagine the scenery; it is quite stunning.

However, keep in mind that the busy season for Caddo Lake is from March to November. I know, the busy season is 75% of the year. Just be aware that you most likely will encounter more crowds in April compared to January, for example.

How Long Should I Plan to Visit Caddo Lake?

Plan for at least  one hour to visit Caddo Lake State Park. That will give you enough time to walk along the edge of the lake for a bit and to engage in one other activity, such as wildlife watching or a ranger program.

However, please note that you can easily spend a half day or even a whole day at the state park. A whole day might give you enough time to truly explore all the park has to offer. Moreover, you need to plan for more time in the park for certain activities. For example, you need to plan for a couple of hours for an activity such as a boat tour.

Texas Caddo Lake Park

1. Caddo Lake State Park is located in northeastern Texas, and Caddo Lake itself even extends into northwest Louisiana.

2. There is a $4 per person entrance fee for the state park, and the park is open daily from 8:15am to 4:45pm.

3. The state park received its name from Caddo Lake, which occupies over 25,000 acres of swamp.

4. The park as well as the lake are home to a variety of wildlife, including alligators, snakes, beavers, and more.

5. There are a variety of things to do at Caddo Lake State Park, including fishing, boating, canoeing, hiking, camping, ranger programs, boat tours, and more.

Caddo Lake Saw Mill Pond

How did Caddo Lake receive its name? Caddo Lake State Park received its name from Caddo Lake, which occupies over 25,000 acres of swamp. The average depth of the lake is approximately 10 feet (~three meters), yet the deepest portions average 20 feet (~six meters). Caddo Lake’s environment is a beautiful as well as unique sight. It is full of bald cypress trees (some that are even hundreds of years old) , bayous, ponds, and sloughs. Moreover, there is Spanish moss hanging from trees all around the lake.

Pets are allowed within the state park, but they must be kept on a leash at all times.

What Wildlife is at Caddo Lake?

Visitors can see all kinds of wildlife while visiting the park, for example alligators, birds, snakes, beavers, armadillos, and more. However, I mainly only saw a few types of birds when I visited. Although, I did not venture out on the lake. Those who find themselves on the lake are likely to see more wildlife as they paddle or boat along the water.

Most people probably find alligators to be the scariest animals located within the park. That being said, here are a few alligator safety tips. First, be aware that they are generally more active around dawn as well as dusk. Second, it is recommended to maintain a distance of at least 30 feet (~nine meters) away from alligators at all times. Third, never feed an alligator. Feeding them can not only pose a danger to yourself, but also to future park visitors as alligators will begin to equate humans with food. Fourth, back away slowly if an alligator hisses at you. This is their warning that you are too close; do not wait for a second warning. Fifth, keep pets on a short leash in areas with common alligator sightings, and do not let them get too close to the water.

How Did Caddo Lake Form?

Caddo Lake formed naturally many years ago. However, a dam was added in the early 1900s to help control the water levels and prevent flooding. As a fun fact, Caddo Lake is the only naturally formed lake in Texas.

There are a few theories surrounding the formation of Caddo Lake. One legend tells that an earthquake struck to punish a Caddo chief when they did not obey the Great Spirit. The earthquake then led to the lake’s formation. Another theory is that the Red River in Louisiana experienced a log jam and then formed the lake.

Where Did the Name “Caddo” Come From?

Natives of the area first discovered Caddo Lake back in the 18th century. They were known as Caddo or Caddoans, and thus they named the lake “Caddo”. Unfortunately, the Caddo people were forcibly removed from their home region later in the 19th century by European settlers.

6) Things to Do at Caddo Lake in Texas

What are the best things to do at Caddo Lake State Park in Texas? Not only is the scenery quite beautiful, but there are so many other things to do at Caddo Lake State Park in Texas. I am sure you can find an activity that suits your interests. For example, maybe you want to spend the afternoon fishing. If you are not into fishing, you can hike along one of the park’s trails and participate in wildlife watching.

Can I go fishing at Caddo Lake? Some say Caddo Lake offers the best fishing in the entire state of Texas . While there are a variety of fish species within the lake, some of the most common are: crappie, chain pickerel, largemouth bass, catfish, yellow bass, and sunfish. However, make sure you read up on the fishing regulations for the lake to ensure you stick within the limits of catching particular fish.

Grab some poles and head over to the lake. You can fish from the shore or from a boat. Visitors are allowed to bring their own boats into the park. On the other hand, they offer boat, canoe, and kayak rentals if you do not have one of your own.

Bonus: if fishing from shore at a state park in Texas, you do not need a license .

Boating, Canoeing, and Kayaking

Caddo Lake has more than   50 miles  of water on which people can canoe or kayak. You are welcome to bring your own canoe or kayak. You can also rent canoes from the state park.

Additionally, you are welcome to rent small boats from the park or bring your own to launch at one of the multiple public boat launches. They do not recommend speed or other similar boating types due to the conditions of the lake, particularly the fact it is fairly swampy.

Lastly, the park offers boat tours, also known as swamp tours . The tour guide drives a small pontoon boat around the lake, providing information on the lake itself as well as its ecosystem. There are a few different companies that offer tours of the lake, so you will have plenty of options. Head to the next section to learn about the best boat tours offered on Caddo Lake in Texas.

As a note, do be aware there are alligators in the water. Always remain cautious while canoeing, kayaking, boating, etc. to ensure your safety. Another great location to spot alligators is at Myakka River State Park in Florida.

Hiking – Caddo Lake in Texas

Are there hiking trails at Caddo Lake State Park? Next up on the list of things to do at Caddo Lake State Park is hiking. The state park holds approximately three miles (~4.8 kilometers) of hiking trails within its borders. There are a few different trails you can explore. First, the Caddo Forest Trail is a 0.7 mile (~1.1 kilometer) loop that passes by the Civilian Conservation Corps Pavilion. Second, the Pine Ridge Spur trail is a 0.2 mile (0.3 kilometer) one-way trail that connects the Caddo Forest Trail and Pine Ridge Loop. Third, the Pine Ridge Loop is a 0.7 mile (~0.4 kilometer) loop.

Fourth, the CCC Cut Through trail is a 0.2 mile (~0.3 kilometer) one-way trail that connects from both the Pine Ridge Loop as well as Caddo Forest Trail. It then leads to the Saw Mill Pond, which is one of the lake’s best viewpoints (trust me, there is a stunning view from the boardwalk). As a note, there are two staircases along this trail. It is thus not considered to be an accessible trail.

Lastly, you can combine all of the four hikes listed above into one large loop hike. This combination hike is approximately 1.5 miles (~2.4 kilometers) in length. It leads you to both the Civilian Conservation Corps Pavilion as well as Saw Mill Pond.

For some of the best hiking in the entire United States, head to Glacier National Park. It holds trails that lead to bright blue lakes, for example the Iceberg Lake Trail , as well as trails that lead to panoramic overlooks, for example the Hidden Lake Overlook Trail .

Saw Mill Pond

Wildlife Watching

Caddo Lake State Park in Texas has a vast variety of animals within its borders, including reptiles, birds, and other species. First, some of the main reptiles within the park and the lake are alligators, turtles, frogs, and snakes. Second, some of the main birds are great blue herons, pileated woodpeckers, wood ducks, and brown-headed nuthatches. Third, other species include deer, armadillos, beavers, and more.

If you are interested in seeing more alligators, there is no better place than Myakka River State Park in Florida .

Camping – Caddo Lake in Texas

There are a few campsite options within the state park. Check out the Caddo Lake camping page for more information. First, you can camp in luxury at a campsite with water and sewer hookup as well as 50-amp electric at Woodpecker Hollow. Second, you can choose a slightly less developed campsite that has a water hookup as well as 30-amp electric at Armadillo Run and Squirrel Haven. Third, you can truly dive into nature by camping in a tent at Mill Pond.

If you prefer the cabin over the camping experience, there are a variety of options available. Some cabins have bathrooms while others do not. However, do not worry as there are bathrooms nearby the bathroom-less cabins. For the cabins with bathrooms, you can choose between a cabin that fits two, four, or eight people .

Viewpoints

First and foremost, Saw Mill Pond is arguably the best viewpoint in the state park . When visiting, I walked down the boardwalk along the water to then take in panoramic views of the lake (which had some huge lily pads) and surrounding cypress trees. I also walked a bit along the shoreline and among the trees. I felt as though I had entered the movie “The Princess and the Frog”.

Second, there is the Caddo Lake Historic Drawbridge. While there are not as many cypress trees in this area, it is still a beautiful sight with the old bridge over the lake. Third, visit the Caddo Lake Dam for a view of the lake as well as the dam that was first constructed in the early 1900s.

Additionally, a lot of the marinas and boat launches hold majestic views of the lake even though they are not generally classified as viewpoints. For example, Johnson’s Ranch Marina and Potter’s Point Marina both offer views of the lake as well as the surrounding cypress trees .

If you truly want to enjoy the best view at Caddo Lake, then you need to visit at sunrise or sunset. The colors of the sun as it rises/sets over the water are almost unbelievable.

Ranger Programs

Last up for things to do at Caddo Lake in Texas are ranger programs. The park rangers offer a variety of different events at the state park. For example, they sometimes lead historical and habitat hikes as well as information sessions on the stars, animals, and trees in addition to other activities. Check out the Caddo Lake events page to learn about their upcoming events.

Moreover, kids can become junior rangers by picking up a ranger journal and explorer pack before heading out to explore the state park .

What are the best Caddo Lake boat tours? Can I book a boat tour on Caddo Lake?  One of the best ways to experience Caddo Lake in Texas is to book one of the available boat tours. Not only do you get to have a more intimate experience on the lake, but the tour guide can also offer all kinds of fun facts and historical information. Still not convinced? Well, you might see a few alligators on the tour. In my opinion, I prefer to see them from the comfort of a nice-sized boat compared to from the ground as I am walking around.

Best Boat Tour on Caddo Lake

Link to tour booking: Captain Ron’s Pontoon Boat Tour .

The most popular boat tour on Caddo Lake in Texas is Captain Ron’s Swamp Tours. You do not have to believe just me; let the thousands of reviews speak for themselves. The tour lasts around 90 minutes and operates only on the weekend, specifically from Friday through Sunday. Moreover, the tour occurs on a pontoon boat with a maximum capacity of nine people. You thus can rest at ease knowing you are about to enjoy a fairly intimate tour on the lake.

The tour costs around $30 for an adult with slight discounts for older individuals and children under the age of 16. Moreover, I recommend you book online in advance if possible. Since it is the most possible boat tour on Caddo Lake, it can thus sell out. This is even more of a concern in the summer season due to the increased number of tourists in the area.

Another Tour Option on Caddo Lake

You can also book a half-day private kayak or canoe tour to get an even more intimate experience on Caddo Lake in Texas. The tour includes a kayak or canoe as well as a guide to lead you around the lake, highlighting all of its beauty and wonder. The tour lasts around two hours and costs $70 per person. That is not too bad of a price for a completely private tour!

What should I bring on a visit to Caddo Lake?  In addition to the items below, check out my list of travel essentials for women and travel accessories for men .

1. Water bottle : Be sure to bring water with you while visiting Caddo Lake State Park. Water is even more important if you are visiting in the summer, for the heat can make you become dehydrated real quick . Consider a reusable water bottle to reduce plastic waste. They also keep your water cooler due to their insulation – bonus!

2. Sunscreen : While this might not be as important on a cloudy day, it will be on a day full of beautiful clear skies. Walking around even for just 30 minutes can lead to sunburn if you have fair skin.

3. Bug spray : Let’s be honest – mosquitos, gnats, and any other little type of fly can ruin an experience. You cannot truly enjoy an attraction if you are swatting away bugs from your face the whole time. Therefore, be prepared with bug spray or a mosquito repellent bracelet .

Hiking Apparel

4. Hat or visor : It is always a good idea to protect yourself from the sun so that you do not burn and also do not overheat.

5. Hiking shoes : A pair of hiking shoes will be incredibly helpful if you plan on hiking along any of the trails within the state park.

6. Hiking poles : Bring along hiking poles if you would like a bit of extra support while conquering one of the park’s hiking trails.

7. Optional – crampons : These are only necessary in the winter months if there is snow or ice along the hiking trails. Crampons are spikes that attach to the bottom of shoes.

Additional Items

8. Kayak: I have an Intex Challenger inflatable kayak , and I absolutely love it. Not only have I taken it out on lakes, but also on rivers. You can thus kayak around Caddo Lake as well as other nearby bodies of water. On the other hand, maybe you want to buy a kayak specifically to promote your fishing hobby. In that case, purchase a Lifetime fishing kayak .

9. Binoculars : Trust me, it is a lot easier to go wildlife viewing at Caddo Lake with a pair of binoculars. For example, you can probably see birds without binoculars, but you might not be able to distinguish the specific type of bird.

PIN IT to save it for later!

Head to one of the state’s most unique attractions: Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo, Texas .

If you happen to be in Dallas anytime soon : Reunion Tower GeO-Deck in Dallas, Texas .

About Caddo Lake and its History

Golden hour hitting the bald cypress trees at Caddo Lake.

Caddo Lake is a 25,400-acre natural lake and bayou on the border between Texas and Louisiana. Moreover, it is said that it’s the largest naturally made lake in the Southern states and the only naturally made lake in the Lone Star State.

Ironically, the Texas side of Caddo Lake looks like it belongs in Louisiana because it is full of Spanish moss and bald cypress trees. In contrast, Louisiana has very little of the lake’s lush greenery and trees.

There are so many things that make Caddo Lake beautiful. For one, it is easily the prettiest lake in Texas, with the Spanish moss hanging from the towering bald cypress trees. It is also rich in history and known as the largest flooded cypress forest in the world.

Caddo Lake has an amazing and diverse wetland habitat home to a wide variety of plants and animals. Researchers have documented 216 birds, 47 mammals, and 90 reptile and amphibian species – and yes, that includes alligators.

On this historical side, historians have said that the Caddo Indians were the first primary inhabitants in the Caddo Lake as early as 200 BC. The Caddo Indians lived here until 1835, when they signed a treaty with the U.S. government and relocated to Oklahoma.

In the late 1800s, Caddo Lake and the Big Cypress Bayou channel were used by steamboats to transport a hot commodity, cotton. The steamboats would go from New Orleans all the way to Jefferson until the Great Raft was removed and water levels fell.

So in the early 1900s, a dam was created to help raise water levels again. It was also created to accommodate drilling equipment when oil was discovered under the water. Therefore, Caddo Lake became the first over-water oil well in the world.

As I said, Caddo Lake is rich in history!

Best Time to Visit Caddo Lake

Golden hour hitting the bald cypress trees at Caddo Lake in the

Caddo Lake is a wonderful destination year-round because the bald cypress trees are almost always lush and green.

The spring and fall season is the best time of the year to visit. From late April through June, if the water levels are right, the lotus flowers will bloom, and it’s absolutely gorgeous on the lake. Additionally, the weather is perfect, the lake is not very crowded, and it’s the best time to catch trophy fish.

In the fall, November is the best month to visit to see fall foliage. Yes, there is fall foliage in Texas! The bald cypress trees turn from green to vibrant orange and red. A sunrise boat tour is breathtaking if you really want to see a colorful day on the lake.

The summertime is always a popular time to visit, but be aware, it can be scorching and extremely humid! In the winter, the bald cypress trees will lose their color for a short period of time, but if you enjoy fishing for crappie and white bass, then it’s the best time to visit.

Best Things to Do at Caddo Lake

Picturesque Caddo Lake with Spanish moss and bald cypress trees.

Out of all our trips in the Lone Star State, exploring the mysterious yet beautiful Caddo Lake is one of our favorite destinations in Texas. In two days, we were able to experience some of the best things to do at Caddo Lake. I encourage you to try and do the same with the following below.

Enjoy a Boat Day Trip

If you can only do one thing at Caddo Lake, a day on the lake is a MUST! Whether you rent a boat and go out on the lake on your own or book a tour, this is the best way to experience Caddo Lake.

If you have your own boat, there are a handful of boat ramps available to the public – some require a fee. A few popular ones include Caddo Lake State Park, Shady Glade Marina, and Johnson’s Ramp.

A family enjoying a boat tour with Captain Ron - a boat tour is one of the best things to do at Caddo Lake.

We decided to book a boat day trip with one of the best – Captain Ron’s Swamp Tours . Captain Ron takes guests out on his 28-foot pontoon boat for 90 wonderful minutes through beautiful areas of Caddo Lake.

Throughout the tour, Captain Ron bestows his wealth of knowledge about Caddo Lake’s history with enthusiasm and a sprinkle of good Texas humor. We probably laughed just as much as we learned, which made the tour very enjoyable. It is no wonder why his business motto says, “It’s not just a boat ride, it is an experience,” because you truly receive an experience you will never forget.

If you need to book a boat day trip tour, look no further than Captain Ron’s Swamp Tours. He operates Friday through Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm.

Watch a Sunrise or Sunset on the Lake

Enjoying the sunrise between bald cypress trees on Caddo Lake - a sunrise boat tour is one of the best things to do at Caddo Lake.

There is always something special about catching a sunrise or sunset, especially at amazing destinations. Caddo Lake is no exception. In fact, it’s probably one of the best sunrise/sunset we have ever witnessed.

The best way to watch a sunrise or sunset on Caddo Lake is by boat tour, but not just any tour – I recommend booking a tour with Rich of Caddo Lake Bayou Tours . Rich takes guests from Shady Glade Marina and into a different part of Lake Caddo that has a perfect view of the sun rising or setting.

We are usually sunset people, but the sunrise at Caddo Lake may have converted us. Watching the sunrise is definitely one of the best things to do at Caddo Lake. Moreover, I would say it’s an experience you cannot miss.

A sunrise peaking between bald cypress trees on Caddo Lake.

I highly recommend you bring your camera because Rich understands nature photography. He knows the best areas to stop at to catch the light hitting the bald cypress trees. The photos I took on our sunrise tour are probably some of the best pictures I have ever captured, thanks to the beauty of the lake and Rich’s knowledge as a guide.

In addition to the sunrise/sunset tour, Rich also offers guided photography tours, fishing trips, and a two-hour sightseeing tour. All of the tours are available 7 days a week at any given time between sun up and sundown.

Visit Caddo Lake State Park

Caddo Lake State Park is easily one of the best state parks in Texas. It is located at the upper end of Caddo Lake, which is known to have some of the best fishing in the area.

Furthermore, Caddo Lake State Park has so much to offer guests. You can go hiking through the piney woods, fish on the pier or the lake, canoe through the bayous, enjoy birdwatching, camp or stay in a cabin, and launch your boat from the camp. If you plan to canoe, the park offers canoe rentals by the hour on a first-come-first-serve basis.

In addition to the many fun things to do at Caddo Lake State Park, its diversity makes this park majestic. A towering Piney Woods Forest and picturesque Saw Mill Pond lead into the Big Cypress Bayou. Everywhere you look, there is something beautiful to discover.

Paddle the Water Trails

Two guys paddling on a canoe on Caddo Lake - one of the best things to do.

If you are looking for a peaceful workout with a scenic view, then paddling the waters of Caddo Lake is your answer. Whether you kayak or canoe, paddling through a maze of sloughs is one of the best things to do at Caddo Lake and should be on everyone’s Texas bucket list.

Visitors can rent or bring their own gear and equipment. Otherwise, Caddo Lake State Park, Johnson’s Ranch, and Riverbend Outfitters offer canoe and/or kayak daily rentals.

Caddo Lake has over 50 miles of trails to navigate by kayak/canoe. Each trail is marked with unique reflective arrow signs attached to trees and posts to guide paddlers. If you rent from an outfitter, they may be able to provide a map for you. Otherwise, Texas Parks and Wildlife has a map of all the trails here .

Caddo Lake has more than 70 fish species swimming beneath the waters, but the crappie, largemouth bass, and catfish are the most popular. It is also known as the most scenic trophy bass fishing lake in America, so fishing is one of the best things to do at Caddo Lake. If you are lucky, you can reel in a trophy-size bass of over 8 pounds!

Fishing conditions are good throughout the year, but each species has its best time of the year. You can fish on the pier, by kayak, or by boat. For the best results, I recommend booking a fishing tour with an experienced guide.

A Texas or Louisiana fishing license is required to fish at Caddo Lake. Furthermore, you can also check all of the regulations at the Texas Parks and Wildlife .

Take a Hike

A hiking trail in the Piney Woods Forest with a wooden bridge located at Caddo Lake State Park.

There are two places to go hiking at Caddo Lake – Caddo Lake National Wildlife Refuge and Caddo Lake State Park. In my opinion, the best place to hike is at Caddo Lake State Park. Though there are only 2 miles worth of trails at the park, each trail is a great escape.

The four hiking trails at Caddo Lake State Park are short but are considered a moderate difficulty because of the steep inclines and stairs. Each trail takes hikers into the Piney Woods Forest, where you completely forget that you are steps away from a lake filled with Spanish moss and bald cypress trees.

Our favorite trail is the .7-mile Caddo Forest Trail which has seven charming wooden bridges to cross.

Sleep By the Lake

When it comes to accommodations by Caddo Lake, there is almost no limit of options. The two most popular places to sleep by the lake are camping at the state park or renting an Airbnb lakehouse.

Caddo Lake State Park campsites have water, electricity, full hookups, and screened shelters for campers. If you enjoy the great outdoors, camping at Caddo Lake has everything you need.

If you need a place to rest your head in the comfort of a home, do not worry, there are several Airbnb rentals directly on the lake. From luxurious lakehouses to serene cabins, and family-friendly houses with waterslides into the bayou, your oasis awaits you.

Explore Caddo Lake National Wildlife Refuge

If you want to explore more of the area, Caddo Lake National Wildlife Refuge offers various activities to enjoy. Visitors can hike the nature trails, watch for wildlife, go biking, and drive the scenic 6-mile Auto Tour Route.

Dine with a View

After a long day on the lake, you will surely work up an appetite. Therefore, I recommend enjoying a delicious meal at Big Pines Lodge Restaurant and Waterin Hole . The restaurant sits adjacent to the lake with a covered patio so guests may enjoy tasty food with a gorgeous view.

Locals and visitors rave about the variety of seafood dishes and fried foods at Big Pines Lodge Restaurant and Waterin Hole. Specifically, the farm-raised alligator, whole catfish, and fresh-cut, double battered fried onion rings.

All of the dishes come in big portions, so you definitely need to come hungry. Furthermore, each table is offered complimentary homemade hushpuppies, coleslaw, and a relish tray. Make sure you leave room for dessert because guests also receive complimentary ice cream.

A plate of fried catfish and fried onion rings from Big Pines Lodge Restaurant and Watering Hole.

Must order: Fried Alligator, Fried Onion Rings, and Catfish (any-style).

Tip: If you book with Captain Ron’s Swamp Tours, his dock is at the restaurant. So you can eat lunch or dinner before or after your tour.

I hope this post has inspired you to visit one of Texas’ greatest treasures. As you can see, there are so many fun things to do at Caddo Lake. After one visit, I guarantee you will immediately want to return to this majestic and mysterious lake – I know we do!
