Maldives holiday experiences

There’s no better place to do nothing at all than in the Maldives, home to endless beautiful beaches with sugar-soft sand and warm crystal clear waters. But if you want to enjoy a little adventure or learn about the country’s history and heritage, you’ll find plenty of activities and attractions too.

Aside from sunbathing on unspoilt beaches, the next best thing to do is cool off in the azure sea. Swim in tranquil lagoons, explore the inhabitants of coral reefs, or snorkel beneath the surface to catch glimpses of gliding manta rays or sea turtles. Submerge deeper into the waters with a scuba diving adventure and get close to parrotfish, snapper, and barracuda.

In the Ari Atoll, you can spot huge whale sharks and hammerheads, while the North Male Atoll boasts caves, steep drops, and vibrant coral reefs. On dry land, you can play golf on ocean-front golf courses with drive balls that are made out of fish food, should they end up in the sea. Many hotels also offer yoga and fitness programmes where you can look after your body and mind amid natural and tranquil surroundings.

In Malé, you can shop for souvenirs and handmade crafts in Orchid Magu, or head to Majeedhee Magu, which is lined with clothing boutiques and cosmetic shops. The city’s fish market is a great place to experience the local way of life.

Island hopping is a great way to explore neighbouring isles and meet the locals. You can have picnics on secluded beaches, go kayaking to remote coves, or learn about diverse marine life and conservation programmes from professional guides.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Maldives sits on either side of the equator, which means it's blessed with consistently warm weather. However, the best time to visit the Maldives for a holiday is during the dry season, which typically runs from November to April. This period offers sunny weather, clear skies, and calm seas, making it perfect for beach activities, water sports, and exploring the stunning marine life by snorkelling or diving. However, it's worth noting that the Maldives is a year-round destination, and even during the monsoon season (May to October), you can still enjoy pleasant weather between occasional rain showers.

There are over 1200 islands that collectively make up the Maldives. Choosing your island destination for a Maldives holiday will largely depend on your preferences and interests. However, popular locations that we recommend include:

Malé: The capital city of the Maldives is a bustling hub of culture, history, and vibrant markets. Explore the Grand Friday Mosque that presides over the landscape, meander around the narrow streets that thread between high rises, and immerse yourself in the local way of life. The underwater riches of the shoreline also lure scuba enthusiasts from across the world.

Kaafu Atoll: This atoll is home to the famous North Malé Atoll, where you'll find a wide range of luxury resorts, pristine beaches, and thrilling diving and snorkelling opportunities. Private boat charters will take you whale watching, and relaxing spa experiences offered by many of the hotels in the atoll will help you unwind after an active day at sea.

Baa Atoll: A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, Baa Atoll is known for its rich biodiversity and stunning marine life. It's a perfect destination for nature lovers and those interested in sustainable tourism. Hosting the world's largest natural manta ray feeding station, this place is unique and wonderfully preserved.

It's always important to stay informed about the latest travel advice when planning a holiday in the Maldives. Entry requirements may change with little warning, so monitoring local advice is essential. You must have the necessary travel documents, such as a valid passport, and all tourists will be granted a 30-day visa upon arrival.

The Maldives is a dream holiday destination. Its stilted over-water cabins are an iconic scene. The waters are impeccably clear, and the weather is perfect. If you paint a picture of paradise, it would look a little like the Maldives. But beyond its blissful good looks, there's a fascinating history and a rich culture to discover – here are three reasons to visit the Maldives:

The country's geology is unique: The whole country is made up of 26 coral atolls formed after the eruption of ancient underwater volcanoes.

You can swim with the biggest fish in the sea: The Whale Shark can grow up to 20ft long. Despite their size, they pose no danger to humans and live off a healthy diet of plankton.

It's a new tourist destination: Although the Maldives has existed for thousands of years, its emergence as a tourist hotspot is recent. Only in the 1970s did the first resorts begin to open up, transforming it into a sought-after destination. Before that, it remained a hidden gem known primarily to adventurous divers and surfers.

Maldives is a treasure trove of tourist attractions, offering exotic islands, pristine white beaches, magnificent reefs, and captivating museums. With its peaceful islands, luxurious resorts, and awe-inspiring underwater world, every visit to the Maldives is an alluring experience.

Head to the city: Start your Maldives exploration in the charming capital, Malé. With its ancient mosque, vibrant buildings, and breathtaking turquoise waters, Malé is a must-visit tropical hot spot. Discover the city's rich heritage, stroll through bustling markets, and immerse yourself in Maldivian history. Don't miss the iconic Grand Friday Mosque, National Museum and Rasrani Bageecha, and indulge in delectable seafood and find unique souvenirs at Majeedhee Magu.

Take a trip to the Artificial Beach: Don't be fooled by its name. Artificial Beach in Malé is a striking man-made paradise that attracts beach lovers and food enthusiasts alike. With lounging areas, barbeques, and cosy cafes, it offers a delightful experience for culinary delights. Adventure enthusiasts can enjoy thrilling water activities, while others can take leisurely walks and admire the breathtaking sunset.

Admire a glowing beach: Vaadhoo Island in the Maldives is a mesmerising destination where the waters come alive with a magical glow at night. Its unique phenomenon of bioluminescent plankton attracts millions of tourists every year – and to no surprise, it's a must-see sight. Take a stroll on the glowing beach, immerse yourself in the ethereal blue waters, and soak up the peaceful ambience.

Celebrate your love in the romantic settings of the Maldives with honeymoon packages that offer secluded villas, candlelit dinners, and spa treatments. Or, for a thrill-seeking adventure, engage in packages built around water sports activities like surfing, jet skiing, kayaking, and parasailing. Whatever you desire from your Maldives getaway with Qatar Airways Holidays, we are here to make it happen.

9 Mistakes to Avoid in the Maldives

What you need to know before heading to the idyllic collection of more than a thousand islands.

qatar airways maldives travel requirements

The Republic of Maldives, a collection of more than a thousand islands in the Indian Ocean, is known for clear turquoise waters, endless white beaches, and of course, luxurious overwater bungalows — the ideal (and often literal) jumping-off point for unrivaled snorkeling, swimming, and diving.

While there's no single right way to experience the Maldives, there are several ways you might go wrong. So whether you're still in the planning stages — or already lounging by your infinity pool in the Baa Atoll — here are nine mistakes to avoid in the Maldives.

1. Visiting Only One Island

An archipelago of nearly 1,200 islands — the vast majority uninhabited — the Maldives tends to favor a "one island, one resort" approach to hotel development. So you could all too easily journey across the world to see only one tiny, albeit stunning, islet — and maybe a bit of Malé, the capital you'll fly in and out of. Try not to let that happen: Whether you charter a boat, take a day tour to a nearby atoll, or divide your time between two resorts, make sure to get in some island-hopping while you're here.

2. Assuming the Maldives Can’t Be Budget-friendly

The Maldives has a well-earned reputation for being ultra-lavish, but visiting on a budget is certainly possible. Even the airfare isn't prohibitively expensive, with roundtrip prices dipping below $1,000 for much of the year. To cut down on expenses when you arrive, stay at a four-star hotel such as the Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma or a local guest house.

As for activities on a budget, there are many ways to immerse yourself in local beauty that don't involve a chartered yacht or helicopter. For starters, you can participate in reef restoration initiatives — many of them run by affordable resorts such as Reethi Beach Resort , where the ongoing coral propagation program includes periodic hands-on opportunities for guests. And while folks staying at a resort may be able to snorkel along the house reefs, anyone opting for a rental home can snorkel on select public beaches instead. Plus, staying in a rental home or guesthouse generally gives you access to experiences you can't put a price on: those that revolve around local life (see item number 3 below).

3. Missing Out on Local Culture

Because the Maldives tends to be known abroad as a beach destination, its cultural offerings are often overlooked. But in this unique melting pot of Sri Lankan, Indian, Malaysian, Middle Eastern, Indonesian, and African influences, getting to know only the local resorts and reefs would be a big miss. So check out a music or dance performance, try some local cuisine, take a day trip to a fishing village, and never pass up the opportunity to sail anywhere (even from reception to your room) on a small, traditional wooden dhoni.

4. Not Considering a Liveaboard for Part of Your Trip

Offering sea safaris around the clear waters and teeming reefs of the Maldives, liveaboards come with a wide range of accommodations and facilities, plus professionals who range from dive and surf instructors to sommeliers. You can even rent your own yacht, houseboat, or small cruising vessel, and customize the staff to your requirements, perhaps with a massage therapist or yoga instructor. That said, island-hopping through this archipelago is so inherently de-stressing, you may find wellness pros superfluous.

5. Not Going Until Your Honeymoon

Thanks to its profusion of secluded private islands, dreamy overwater bungalows, and unrivaled sunsets, the Maldives will always rank as a top honeymoon destination. But this isn't a place you need to save for the ultimate romantic getaway. The Maldives is just as well-suited to a girls' trip or family escape. In fact, many resorts in the Maldives keep one-upping each other on the family-friendly front. There's everything from a nearly 15,000-square-foot kids' club ( The Den at Soneva Fushi ) to an "adult-free zone" restaurant ( the Petit Bistro at Avani+ Fares Maldives ).

6. Forgetting the Reef-safe Sunscreen at Home

Here at the equator, the UV rays are famously strong, so your sunscreen should be high SPF and constantly reapplied, especially when you're in and out of the water all day. But given what lies beneath — that is, endless tracts of coral and the surrounding Technicolor marine life — your sunscreen should be reef-safe , too. While the Maldives hasn't (yet) joined the growing list of destinations that officially ban chemical sunscreens (only certain physical sunscreens are considered reef-safe), at least one hospitality group with a Maldivian property has banned chemical sunscreens brand-wide: Six Senses .

7. Not Considering an All-inclusive Resort

Though secluded islands have their benefits, easy access to a wide variety of foods and spirits isn't one. To avoid the sticker shock of the resulting imports, travelers to the Maldives often choose all-inclusive resorts. Yes, the nightly rates and fees may exceed others, but many guests find that bundling in the cost of food and drink is the most... palatable approach here.

8. Not Combining the Maldives With a Trip to Asia or the Middle East

For all the seclusion it offers, the Maldives is shockingly accessible. You'll find regular direct flights from, say, Colombo (an hour and a half), Dubai (four hours), or Kuala Lumpur (four and a half hours), so you can easily pair a Maldivian interlude with a trip to Sri Lanka, the Emirates, or Malaysia, among other Asian and Middle Eastern hubs. Check Malaysia Airlines, Etihad, Emirates, and Qatar Airways — for starters — to find deals and routes that make a multistop trip seem eminently doable.

9. Skipping the Bioluminescent Views

While the daytime views get all the screensaver glory, nights are no less magical in the Maldives, especially along the sometimes naturally illuminated shores. Somewhat rare and elusive — but perhaps best seen from April to November — this ethereal light show is caused by visiting bioluminescent plankton that create a glow-in-the-dark effect at the water's edge.

Sweet Spot Sunday: How to book Qatar Qsuites to the Maldives for just 85,000 points

Qatar Qsuites business class Boeing 777-300

Update: Some offers mentioned below are no longer available. View the current offers here .

Qatar Qsuites are in the discussion for the best business class seat in the sky. They've got fully-enclosed doors, a layout that allows for a couple to turn their adjacent seats into a full-fledged double bed, and even the ability to create a four-seat mega-suite for traveling families.

For more TPG news delivered each morning to your inbox, sign up for our daily newsletter .

Now that Qatar Airways has joined the Avios loyalty program with British Airways , there's never been an easier way to book Qsuites to aspirational destinations such as the Maldives. Let's take a look at how to do it.

Why it's special

qatar airways maldives travel requirements

Qsuites are a bucket list item on the list of many points and miles collectors. Qatar Airways operates its Qsuites to lots of fun routes around the world, like Cape Town, Bangkok, Tokyo and Paris.

Perhaps the most enticing Qsuites destination is the Maldives. It's an award traveler's paradise, with jaw-dropping five-star resorts in every direction — many of which can be reserved for free if you've got the right points.

There are two common ways to book Qsuites to the Maldives:

  • Via the British Airways site for 105,000 Avios points each way
  • Via the American Airlines site for 70,000 miles each way

But the sweetest spot of all is now with Qatar Airways Avios. You can fly from the U.S. to the Maldives in lie-flat Qsuites for 85,000 points each way. The cash price for these flights depends on your route, but never expect to pay less than $6,000 round-trip for your ticket. And one-way flights can sometimes cost more than a round-trip. Expect to get a value of at least 3.5 cents per point for your Qatar Avios — a full 2 cents higher than TPG's valuation of Avios at 1.5 cents each.

The reason we consider this a better deal than the 70,000-mile American Airlines option is because Qatar Avios are exponentially easier to earn. There are only a handful of ways to quickly earn American Airlines miles — but there are dozens of ways to quickly earn Qatar Airways Avios (as we'll cover below).

Plus, Qatar's website allows you to book flights a full month beyond the American Airlines site. So you can scoop up award flights before those using American Airlines miles even get the opportunity.

How to book this award

Step 1. log into your qatar airways account.

You'll have to sign into your Qatar Airways account to search for available award flights. Might as well get it out of the way immediately.

qatar airways maldives travel requirements

Step 2. Click on "Spend your Avios"

From the navigation bar at the top, click the "Privilege Club" tab. You'll see a "Spend" category to the far right of the page. Click "Spend your Avios."

qatar airways maldives travel requirements

Step 3. Click "Book Now"

You're now taken to a page that lists all the ways you can spend your Qatar Avios. The first option is "Book award flights." That's the one you want.

qatar airways maldives travel requirements

Step 4. Enter your travel details

On this page, you can choose whether you want to book flights on Qatar Airways or its partner airlines. If you're after Qsuites, stay on the "Redeem on Qatar Airways/British Airways" tab.

Qatar flies its Qsuites to a handful of U.S. cities, including:

  • Los Angeles
  • Philadelphia
  • San Francisco
  • Washington D.C.

Choose one of these airports. If there's no availability for your desired dates, choose the next most convenient. In my opinion, it's worth flying to another U.S. airport to catch a flight in Qsuites to your destination.

qatar airways maldives travel requirements

Step 5. Find seats that aren't "Flexi awards"

On the results page, you'll see some awards with a "Q2" flag next to them (representing Flexi awards) and some without. The awards without the Flexi awards flag cost 85,000 Avios in total to reach the Maldives in Qsuites. The awards with the flag cost 170,000 Avios — double the price.

qatar airways maldives travel requirements

Step 6. Choose your seats and book them

You can consult our ultimate guide to Qatar Qsuites to see which flights offer Qsuites. Just note that Qatar can swap aircraft at will, so even if you've done everything right, you may not get a Qsuite.

Per our ultimate guide, flight QR 756 from Atlanta to Doha and flight QR 672 from Doha to Male are theoretically Qsuites. You should be able to tell if your flight is a Qsuite when selecting your seats. Or, you can check ExpertFlyer (owned by TPG's parent company, Red Ventures) to preview seat maps before you purchase.

Related: Beginner's guide to finding award space with ExpertFlyer

As long as you select flights without the Q2 flag, your award price should be 85,000 one-way — and often around $200 in taxes and fees.

qatar airways maldives travel requirements

Spending $200 in taxes isn't ideal. But for a flight that otherwise costs $6,000+, it's a nominal fee.

How to earn points for this award

There are loads of ways to earn Qatar Airways Avios. That's because you can transfer British Airways Avios to Qatar at a 1:1 ratio — and British Airways Avios are perhaps the easiest points to earn in all of award travel.

As an example, you can transfer the following flexible points currencies to British Airways, and to Qatar from there:

  • American Express Membership Rewards points at a 1:1 transfer ratio.
  • Chase Ultimate Rewards points at a 1:1 transfer ratio.
  • Capital One miles at a 1:1 transfer ratio.
  • Marriott Bonvoy points at a 3:1 transfer ratio.

Likewise, Citi ThankYou points transfer directly to Qatar at a 1:1 transfer ratio, making it the most direct transfer partner.

You've got many, many cards to choose from that earn these types of points, such as:

  • Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card : Earn 75,000 bonus miles after spending $4,000 on purchases within the first three months from account opening.
  • Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card : Earn 60,000 bonus points after spending $4,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening.
  • The Platinum Card® from American Express : Earn 80,000 Membership Rewards Points after you spend $8,000 on purchases within the first six months of card membership.

Related: Redeeming Citi ThankYou points for maximum value

Also, you can transfer Aer Lingus and Iberia Avios to British Airways, and then on to Qatar Airways . You can earn Avios from the following cards:

  • British Airways Visa Signature® Card: Earn 85,000 Avios after you spend $5,000 on purchases within the first three months of account opening.
  • Iberia Visa Signature® Card: Earn 85,000 Avios after you spend $5,000 on purchases within the first three months of account opening.
  • Aer Lingus Visa Signature® Card: Earn 85,000 Avios after you spend $5,000 on purchases within the first three months of account opening.

Bottom line

You can fly from the U.S. to the Maldives in arguably the best business class seat in the world — Qatar Qsuites — for just 85,000 Qatar Airways Avios each way. You'll likely have to pay a couple of hundred dollars in taxes and fees, but it's well worth the fee for a flight that would otherwise cost many thousands of dollars.

Qatar Airways Interlines With Maldivian And Buys Airlink Stake

  • Qatar Airways announces an interline deal with Maldivian for seamless Maldives flights, enhancing the travel experience for passengers.
  • Qatar Airways acquired a 25% stake in Airlink, expanding its presence in Southern Africa with investment in the regional airline.
  • Partnerships with Maldivian and Airlink align with Qatar Airways' commitment to provide innovative travel experiences and drive economic success.

It's been an eventful week at Qatar Airways HQ in Doha. The Middle Eastern carrier announced a new interline deal with Maldivian and acquired a 25% stake in Southern African regional carrier Airlink. While these are separate transactions, they will both enlarge the networks of all three airlines, bringing greater choice to travelers in the Middle East, the Maldives, and Africa.

Seamless flights to the Maldives

Qatar Airways passengers traveling to the Indian Ocean paradise of the Maldives can now book and seamlessly connect with flights throughout the island republic. Qatar Airways (Qatar) has signed a new interline agreement with Maldivian, the leading domestic airline in the Maldives, which also operates international flights to India, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka.

Maldivian is the national carrier of the Maldives and operates a mixed fleet of Airbus A320, ATR 42/72, De Havilland Dash 8 wheelbase aircraft, and DHC Dash 6 Twin Otter seaplanes. Travelers planning holidays in the Maldives can now book their Qatar Airways flight to Male's Velana International Airport (MLE) and an onward connection with Maldivian on one ticket.

Maldivian Adds 4th ATR In Fleet Renewal Program

Travelers in the Maldives can now enjoy another ATR 42-600 that has joined Maldivian's fleet of 25 aircraft.

The new agreement will boost international connectivity and give passengers seamless access to 17 domestic destinations in the Maldives, including Dharavandhoo, Faresmaathodaa, Funadhoo, Fuvahmulah, Gan, Hanimaadhoo, Ifuru, Maavarulu, Madivaru and eight others.

According to Flightradar24 , Qatar operates three flights daily from Doha Hamad International Airport (DOH) to Male Velana International. It operates Airbus A320-200s and Boeing 777-300ERs on the route for a flight that generally takes around four hours. Qatar Airways Chief Commercial Officer Thierry Antinori said the airline continues to expand its services to provide passengers with innovative and inviting travel experiences.

"With our latest Maldivian interline partnership, we look forward to seeing our passengers enjoy a smooth start to their holidays, as well as benefit from the plethora of new travel benefits. We are proud to offer the option of a seamless process, allowing passengers to book one ticket that includes both their Qatar Airways flight to Male and the connecting flight to their beachside getaway."

Qatar buys into Airlink

On Tuesday, Qatar announced it had acquired a 25% stake in Southern African regional airline Airlink . Airlink was formed in 1992 and, with a fleet of more than 65 Embraer regional jets, is the premier privately owned carrier in Southern Africa. Those jets operate to more than 45 destinations in 15 African countries, including Madagascar and St Helena Island.

Qatar said the announcement continues its ambition to further develop operations across the African continent and will cement its role as a key driver of the continent's economic success. Qatar Airways Group CEO Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer said the investment in Airlink further demonstrates how integral the group sees Africa as being in its business future.

"This partnership not only demonstrates our confidence in Airlink, as a company that is resilient, agile, financially robust and governed on sound principles, but also in Africa as a whole, showing huge potential that I am delighted we are able to help start realizing."

The two airlines already have a codeshare partnership , which will seek to align the Qatar Airways Privilege Club and Airlink Skybucks loyalty programs. Qatar operates to 29 African destinations and has seen strong growth in the market, adding new destinations such as Abidjan, Abuja, Accra, Kano, Harare, Luanda, Lusaka, and Port Harcourt, and resuming services to Cairo and Alexandria in the last few years.
