It’s True: T Mobile International Roaming Gives Free Data and Texting Abroad

There’s never been a better time to sign up for T Mobile international roaming.  Their “ONE” plans  include unlimited texting and data in 210+ countries at no extra cost.

I travel every month, so I thought I’d put T-Mobile international data to the test.  Since June 2014, I’ve tested it in 18 countries on 4 continents and read reports from more than 100 other countries. 

T-Mobile works exactly as advertised, but before you sign up, here’s what you need to know.

An Overview of T Mobile International Roaming Plans

T-Mobile ONE Plans  include

• Unlimited talk, texting, and 4G LTE data within the USA
• Unlimited talk, texting and up to 5 gigabytes of 4G LTE data within Canada & Mexico
• Unlimited texting and 2G data connections in 210+ other countries ( full list here )
• FREE Netflix subscription
• In-flight texting and up to 1 hour of free in-flight wi-fi on Gogo-enabled flights

T-Mobile International Roaming FAQ

How do you get access to tmobile international data.

All T-Mobile ONE plans include international data and texting automatically.   “No credit check plans”  are  not   eligible.

Individual plans start at $70/month.  Prices per line drop as you add more lines: it’s $60/line for 2 phones, $47 each for 3 phones, or $40 per line for 4 lines.

Do I need a special phone?

Sort of.  You need a phone that is compatible with the cellular network in the country you’re traveling to.  Most modern smartphones are quad-band and support frequencies used all over the world.  However, if you have a basic model, check with T-Mobile ahead of time to see if your phone is compatible with your travel destination.

I personally use a Google Pixel 2.

What countries are covered by T Mobile?

With 210+ countries, it’s not all-inclusive but it’s pretty darn close.  You’ll need to confirm your destination has coverage in advance but there shouldn’t be many surprises.

Just like in the USA, if you’re heading to obscure or rural destinations within included countries, you may not have a cell phone signal.

How often can you travel?

Let’s be clear: this service is meant for people who live in the USA and travel sometimes…not for people who want to live abroad.

The terms specifically state excessive users of T-Mobile international roaming may have service terminated.  In practice, it seems like you should use your phone abroad less than 50% of the time.

How do you use TMobile international data?

You don’t have to do anything.  Seriously, once your phone recognizes you’re in a new country (like when your flight lands), you’ll automatically have coverage.  T-Mobile sends a text message confirming your service.

I love that you don’t have to call T-Mobile in advance and ask them to turn international roaming on and that you don’t have to set up your phone in any special way.  It works the same way it does at home and frankly you’d never even know that you’re traveling abroad!

The one time my roaming didn’t work automatically, all I had to do was restart my phone (and it seemed to be a device issue).   Please note that I have no affiliation with T-Mobile and cannot provide tech or billing support.

After 18 months, I’ve never been billed more than my standard monthly amount.  There are no hidden fees!

What’s the advantage to T-Mobile international coverage vs. buying SIM cards abroad?

It can be cheaper (especially for occasional travelers) to rely on other phone service in the USA and simply buy local SIM cards when they travel.  I’ve done that previously and you’d be amazed at how cheap you can pick up prepaid service in many countries.

T-Mobile has two main advantages:

• Your phone number doesn’t change.  You don’t have to inform friends, family, and coworkers of a new number for every trip!  Plus they can continue to text your US number at no surcharge, unlike if you just picked up a Nepal-based phone number.
• It’s convenient.  You don’t have to wait in line and deal with language barriers trying to buy phone service abroad.  You don’t have to switch SIM cards if you enter a new country (like on round-the-world trips).

Do you drain your phone battery?  Maps in particular strain your battery, so I always pack an external battery.   Power users can quadruple battery life  with a compact version for only $25.

How fast is the international data?

T-Mobile specifically advertises speeds of approximately 128 kbps (“2G”).  These speeds are fine for travelers to check email.  Features like web browsing, social networking, and GPS/maps work if you have a little patience.  However, streaming radio or video is basically impossible.

Texting works perfectly, although some multimedia messages make take a few seconds to download.

For an extra $10/month per line, you can double your data speeds by purchasing T-Mobile ONE Plus.

What do phone calls cost?

MOST PHONE CALLS ARE NOT FREE.

Phone calls to/from Canada and Mexico are included in your plan, but all other calls are charged!  Costs can add up quickly.

• If you make a phone call in one of the 210+ covered countries while you are abroad , it will be 25 cents per minute. (example: you call your pet-sitter at home to check on your dog)
• If you call from an  un covered country while you are abroad , you’ll pay international rates  and  roaming rates may apply, so expect to pay $0.50-$5.00 per minute! (example: you call your tour guide to mention you’re running late)

Just like with data and texting, you don’t need to turn international service on.  It will work automatically.

Are there other benefits?

T-Mobile doesn’t require a contract, so if it doesn’t work for you, you’re not locked in.  That’s a great way to try things out without committing long-term.

T-Mobile ONE family plans (2 lines or more) also include Netflix subscriptions to use on your phones.

Lastly, T-Mobile users get free passes to GoGo in-air Wi-Fi so you can surf the internet during your flights.

What’s the catch?

If T-Mobile international roaming sounds too good to be true, you might be right.  Although it works well abroad, there are downsides within the United States.

T-Mobile has a fantastic network in urban areas which quickly degrades in low-population areas.  Coverage has improved in the USA over the past year, but it’s not perfect in small towns, national parks, and a few other US locations.

THE BOTTOM LINE

If you travel to major cities, T-Mobile international roaming is an amazing deal.   When it works, it is incredible value.

However, T-Mobile disappoints in smaller towns, national parks, and rural areas.  If that’s where you visit, consider a different US carrier and separate international sim cards when traveling.  Frugal travelers can make calls over Wi-Fi through Skype, Google Voice, or Facetime.

You can try risk-free since T-Mobile doesn’t require a contract.   Getting started and moving my number was quick and easy.  There’s no downside to trying it, even if it doesn’t work out long-term.

Myy wife and I will be traveling in Europe this summer. We are both on the same plan with T-Mobile and have the North America feature which allows free text, data and $0.20 per minute calls. Question is: as we are on the same plan, If we call each other (non-WIFI calling) will there be a $0.20 per minute charge or is it free.

@K. It will still be charged $0.20/minute for any and all calls over the voice network.

Get the Whatsapp application (for both phones) and your phone calls will be completely free using your free data. Same with any other friends who use whatsapp anywhere in the world.

Whatsapp only works on wi-fi. My T-Mobile plan provides for wi-fi calling. I was referring to both parties being out and about while traveling.

Mi niece is right now in France using one of my lines and she communicates with all of us (overseas and USA) via whatsapp. The 3G speed that T-Mobile gives you in Europe is good enough to make whatsapp calls. Of course if you get separated from your spouse, you can use free T-mobile texting.

pcmag published an article in 2015: “T-Mobile Introduces Free Roaming to Canada, Mexico” which states that the north america roaming usage outside the US must be less than the usage within the US during a rolling 3 month period. Also alot of good info there too. Hope this helps take some of the mystery out of this well hidden “rule”.

I am never able to connect in Singapore. Works in other countries. If I buy a Singtel SIM, I can use it on my device.

I have had good success with using T-mobile service in Singapore. I visit Singapore often and had no problems.

I was at the Formula 1 Grand Prix of Singapore last year with my son. He was getting G4 speed with his iPhone 6, I was getting 3g with my Galaxy S5 (a bit slow to upload pictures. I noticed that we were connected to different networks. I tried to switch networks and was unable, therefore I was stuck with G3. So, T-Mobile works in Singapore. You must be doing something wrong.

I do have a question. If I am currently living in a “covered” country, and I get a call from someone in the United States, how does the call get charged? Is the call free from my end if I pick up, or do I pay $0.20/min?

Telekom launches its Travel & Surf data roaming option on July 1 , 2011. This add-on makes it easy for customers to purchase a range of different data passes that let them e-mail and surf worry-free while on their travels - flexibly and worldwide. This has the key advantage of giving customers full control over their data roaming costs. What is more, customers enjoy low prices with extensive price cuts in all three of Telekom's roaming country groups. In EU countries the DayPass S costs just EUR 1.95 for 10 MB , the DayPass M only EUR 4.95 for 50 MB , and the seven-day flat rate just EUR 14.95 . Alongside Germany, a further nine of Deutsche Telekom 's national companies in Europe are launching their Travel & Surf offers around now. "Travel & Surf makes connected life even more attractive to our customers," said Niek Jan van Damme , member of the Board of Management of Deutsche Telekom AG and Managing Director of Telekom Deutschland GmbH . "It lets our customers surf, e-mail and keep up with contacts on their social networks when abroad without having to worry. In country group 2, which also includes Turkey, the United States and Canada, the DayPass S with 10 MB of data costs EUR 14.95 and in country group 3 EUR 24.95 . These prices apply for both contract and prepay customers. The Travel & Surf add-on is available to all Telekom consumers irrespective of which voice roaming plan they currently have. All data passes can be used with smartphones, cell phones, tablets and laptops and are easy to purchase. Customers simply request the Travel & Surf option free of charge. As soon as they try to go online in the foreign network, a text message is received with information on the data passes available in the respective country. The desired pass can then be bought either directly by text message or via browser link. When customers then open the browser, it initially directs them to the page with details of the data passes. The passes offer full control over the costs of mobile surfing abroad. Customers are sent a warning text message once 80 percent of the volume has been used up. Once they have used up the data volume of the day pass, the Internet session is interrupted and they can simply purchase another pass via the Internet site or by text message. The day pass data volumes are available for 24 hours after purchasing the pass, and the flat rate for seven days. The maximum transmission rates outside of Germany are the same as the usable bandwidth specified in the customer's rate plan and any add-on. The Travel & Surf option is pre-configured for new customers. In Germany, there are several ways for existing customers to order the new data roaming add-on free of charge, including on the Internet, by telephone or in a Telekom Shop. Travel & Surf is also available to business customers. Alternatively, they can continue to surf abroad using the existing attractive data passes with low prices per MB for any excess volume used. Telekom customers can make substantial savings on mobile calls outside of Germany with the free-of-charge Smart Traveler option. This enables customers to use the minutes included in the budget of their current rate plan for calls within the destination country and to Germany. Calls outside of the minutes budget cost just EUR 0.29 a minute, with incoming calls free of charge for up to 60 minutes . Inbound and outbound calls are subject to a one-time connection charge of EUR 0.75 .

Nový roaming nastaví T-Mobile každému automaticky. Je levnější

T-Mobile od 15. května ruší různé roamingové balíčky a přichází s novým jediným tarifem. Ten dělí země na tři zóny a ve dvou má levnější sazby. Končí různé balíčky jako World Class, Příchozí hovory Evropa, EU zvýhodnění a další. Již aktivovaný tarif Cestovatel jako jediný zůstává, ale nově již aktivovat nepůjde. Změny se netýkají firemní klientely a rámcových smluv.

Místo současných pěti zón (Slovensko, země EU a tři zóny ve zbytku světa) zavádí T-Mobile jen tři zóny. Do první patří země EU, Norsko, Lichtenštejnsko a Island. Do druhé zóny patří zbytek Evropy mimo zónu 1, USA, Kanada, Egypt, Rusko, Čína a Izrael. Do zóny 3 pak všechny zbývající státy světa.

Ceny jsou v korunách včetně DPH. U dat jsou účtovány bloky po 10 kB.

T-Mobile snížil ceny. V první zóně bude stát odchozí hovor 7,47 koruny, což je asi o 1,20 koruny méně než dosud. Levnější je i příchozí hovor za 2,18 koruny a SMS za 2,48 koruny.

Ceny ve druhé zóně zůstávají stejné, třetí je pak uprostřed bývalých zón 3 a 4. To znamená, že pro USA, Kanadu, Egypt, Rusko, Čínu a Izrael je nyní volání levnější, tyto země se přesunuly z bývalé zóny 3 do nové dvojky, takže místo dosavadní sazby 54,45 koruny za minutu odchozího hovoru budou zákazníci platit 35 korun a u příchozích cena výrazně klesla z 42,35 koruny na 18 korun.

Naopak země Severní Ameriky, Afriky, Austrálie a Asie, které dosud patřily do zóny 3 s cenami za minutu příchozího hovoru 54,45 korun a odchozího hovoru 42,35 koruny nyní patří do nejvyšší nové zóny 3 s cenami 69 korun za odchozí a 49 korun za příchozí hovor. Naopak tento přesun snížil ceny za volání ve střední a Jižní Americe nebo u satelitních sítí z 96 korun za minutu odchozího a 66 korun za minutu příchozího hovoru na výše uvedenou sazbu za novou zónu 3.

Aktivace: SMS ve tvaru např. TRAVEL DEN 1 nebo TRAVEL 50MB 1 (koncové číslo podle zóny) na 4603.

T-Mobile zrušil i současné datové balíčky. Nově jsou k dispozici dva: Travel & Surf na den a Travel & Surf 50 MB. Balíčky platí pro všechny zóny, ale ceny se diametrálně liší. V zóně 1, tedy v EU, stojí 50MB balíček (s platností jeden měsíc) 185 korun, ale v zóně 3 už 2 750 korun.

Celkově tak platí, že po regulaci Evropské unie ceny roamingu v tomto prostoru jsou již delší dobu na přijatelné výši, ale volání ve zbytku světa kromě několika výjimek v nové zóně 2 je stále hodně drahé. Koupě místní předplacené SIM, pokud je to možné, se tak vždy vyplatí.

A o datech to platí dvojnásob či spíš stonásobně, protože sledování e-mailu za 2 750 korun třeba na dovolené v Thajsku (když se vejdete do limitu 50 MB) je luxus i pro bohaté klienty.

O2 zlevňuje roamingové volání a data. pozor ale v turecku nebo egyptě, roaming tuzemských operátorů byl loni o pětinu dražší než v eu, konec roamingu na obzoru, ek navrhuje stejné sazby jako v domácí síti, nenechte se napálit na dovolené. s vhodným tarifem hodně ušetříte, mobil.cz přináší zvýhodněný datový balíček na dovolenou.

By doing so, Deutsche Telekom offers its customers an attractive service for comfortable and inexpensive mobile access to the internet when on holiday. Deutsche Telekom customers can benefit from low costs and the ability to keep track of their expenses at any time. Travel & Surf will be available in ten European Deutsche Telekom subsidiaries.

Using Travel & Surf is easy and provides flexibility. The offer consists of data roaming passes that can be easily booked according to the customers’ needs. T-Mobile Customers Can Now Enroll Hilton's Loyalty Program for Free and Score Discounts on Stays for a Limited Time

T-Mobile is rewarding all of its customers with free Magenta status, a brand-new program that offers a suite of travel and entertainment perks and deals.

T-Mobile is rewarding all of its customers with free Magenta status, a brand-new program that offers a suite of travel and entertainment perks and deals. 

To kick off the new Magenta status program, T-Mobile subscribers get exclusive benefits to Hilton Honors, one of the largest hotel chains in the world, with over 7,500 properties worldwide. Travelers can get a 15 percent discount on eligible hotel rates through this exclusive T-Mobile link on reservations through March 31, 2025. 

In addition, T-Mobile customers can enroll for free Hilton Silver elite status, which will also last until March 31, 2025. With this status level, travelers can enjoy 20 percent bonus points on stays, a fifth night free on reward bookings, all-inclusive spa discounts, and more.

“At T-Mobile, our customers are at the center of everything we do — they’ll never be treated like a number,” said T-Mobile’s president of marketing, strategy and products, Mike Katz, in a statement. “When you’re part of the magenta family, we want to ensure you feel like the VIP you are. Now, T-Mobile customers can flash their Magenta Status to unlock unparalleled experiences that can’t be found anywhere else with the brands they love and use every day … which can add up to $1,500 a year in extra value.”

There are other travel freebies available for Magenta status holders, including free refueling on Dollar car rentals and electric vehicle (EV) charging on Hertz vehicles. T-Mobile customers can access all of these new benefits when they download the T Life app .

The new Magenta perks are offered in addition to the weekly T-Mobile Tuesday deals. Every Tuesday, T-Mobile offers weekly coupons, from free Tropical Smoothie Café smoothies to Shake Shack burgers. 

T-Mobile is one of the best phone plans for travelers , whether they need to be connected while flying or traveling internationally. The phone carrier partners with Alaska, American, Delta, and United to offer complimentary in-flight Wi-Fi connection, and select plans even get free high-speed data in 215+ countries.

T-Mobile’s 5G dominance has made it the go-to carrier for data-hungry users. T-Mobile’s network has some of the best average speeds thanks to its excellent mid-band 5G coverage and its plans are designed to utilize this network with plenty of premium data, and some hotspot data on every plan. T-Mobile also includes taxes and fees in many of its plan prices making it easier to choose your plan.

AT&T has been trimming its plans down to the basics with the removal of extras like streaming services, and a focus on data and international features. AT&T offers five plans, four offering unlimited data. The four unlimited plans also support full 5G access and unlimited talk, text, and data in Mexico and Canada. T-Mobile, by comparison, has many plans, though there's a lot of overlap. For the most part, T-Mobile's most interesting plans are its Go5G plans; its two most expensive plans focus on delivering regular phone upgrades.

When it comes to coverage, AT&T has an edge in rural areas with a more developed LTE network but falls well short in terms of 5G coverage. T-Mobile got a decent head start in 5G deployment with earlier access to the mid-band spectrum, which has allowed it to rocket ahead in average network speeds. That being said, AT&T is still working hard to make a comeback with its C-band 5G network reaching the majority of Americans thanks to a focus on urban and suburban areas.

AT&T’s current plans make it easy to mix and match different tiers, so each family member gets the plan that makes the most sense for their needs. There are five primary postpaid plans, four of which offer unlimited data. AT&T includes 5G support on all unlimited plans with full access to its 5G network, which includes its mid-band and high-band 5G, marketed as 5G+. Customers choosing plans on AT&T should focus on premium data amounts, hotspot data, and international coverage.

T-Mobile’s plans are a bit more complicated with seven plans available, though most new customers should focus on the Go5G and Essentials plans. Luckily, T-Mobile offers full 5G access on all of its plans, and all also include unlimited data. T-Mobile’s top plans, like Go5G Plus, feature unlimited premium data, while the cheaper plan, Go5G, only gets 100GB of premium data. The Essentials plans don’t get any premium data. While there’s still a lot to consider before selecting a plan, it’s nice to know that you’ll get T-Mobile’s best feature on all plans; it’s 5G.

Streaming resolution is one criterion to consider for either carrier. This refers to the video quality on apps like YouTube, Netflix, Disney+, and more. All but AT&T’s top plan is limited to SD streaming resolutions, which can look a bit blurry on a large phone display but won’t bother many people. T-Mobile offers a wider range, with its cheapest plans offering 480p video, its middle-of-the-road offering 720p, and its top plans unlocked to 4K. At T-Mobile, all wireless customers can save $10 per month on 5G Home Internet with Go5G Plus, Go5G Next, and Magenta Max receiving $20 off per month.

Mobile coverage and reception

When it comes to rural coverage, AT&T has an advantage with a more developed LTE network than T-Mobile. That being said, T-Mobile has made up a lot of ground in this area with its vast low-band 5G coverage. Still, if you’re heading out into the countryside, you’ll likely be better served by AT&T, though it can vary by location.

When it comes to 5G, T-Mobile has a solid lead over every other carrier with most of its network offering at least low-band nationwide 5G coverage, and the carrier is working to upgrade its towers with quicker mid-band 5G at 2.5GHz. This spectrum was acquired through its purchase of Sprint and allowed T-Mobile to get a much earlier start on 5G than AT&T. Still, once AT&T received access to the mid-band spectrum it won at auction in 2022, it started its mid-band 5G coverage.

As the name implies, mid-band 5G uses a higher frequency than nationwide 5G at around 3.7GHz on AT&T and 2.5GHz on T-Mobile. With coverage, the higher the frequency, the smaller the effective coverage area, meaning that AT&T needed to do more than simply upgrade its existing towers. Long story short, AT&T has been working hard to expand its mid-band 5G coverage, but still falls well short of T-Mobile’s mid-band coverage. For reference, T-Mobile calls its faster coverage Ultra Capacity 5G, and AT&T uses the name 5G+.

For the best 5G compatibility, you’ll want n71 and n41 band support on T-Mobile, and bands n5 and n77 on AT&T. Bands n260 and n261 are used for mmWave 5G, which is nice to have, but not necessary for many. While fast, mmWave has very weak coverage and is mostly suitable for large venues, like sports stadiums, or public squares. As for the phones, just about every 5G phone released in the past couple of years supports at least the low and mid-band frequencies.

T-Mobile also stands out with free in-flight Wi-Fi on its bigger plans.

AT&T's plans

AT&T has five main postpaid plans: Unlimited Premium PL, Unlimited Extra EL, Unlimited Starter SL, Value Plus VL, and 4GB. Each plan gets usage in Mexico and Canada, and all unlimited plans get 5G access. These plans can be mixed and matched for each line, so users can get the features that make the most sense for their needs. Keep in mind that AT&T’s advertised prices require both paperless billing and auto-pay. Also, remember that AT&T charges taxes and fees at the end of checkout, so your bill will be a bit higher than the sum of the plan prices.

Unlimited Started is another step up, adding 5GB of hotspot data, but costs $65.99 for the first line. That’s $60.99 per line with two lines, 45.99 with three lines, and $35.99 with four lines. While this plan isn’t a great value with one or two lines, it makes a lot more sense when you bring the whole family.

Unlimited Extra EL adds 75GB of prioritized premium data as well as 30GB of high-speed hotspot data. This plan also includes AT&T ActiveArmor Advances, a security package that adds a VPN for using public Wi-Fi, identity monitoring, reverse number lookup, caller ID, Safe Browsing (which blocks known risky sites), and theft alerts on Android. This package normally costs $3.99 on its own.

The top unlimited plan takes the premium data to unlimited, upgrades the hotspot data to 60GB, and adds unlimited talk, text, and data in 20 Latin American countries, in addition to usage in Mexico and Canada available on all plans. Looking to save more? Military members, veterans, first responders, nurses, and physicians can get 25% off AT&T’s unlimited plans. If you’re 55 or older, you can also get up to two lines on the Unlimited 55+ plan. This plan aligns closely with the Value Plus VL plan with 5G access, no hotspot data, and SD resolutions. You’ll have to go into an AT&T store to get this plan, however.

T-Mobile's plans

T-Mobile currently offers seven postpaid plans: Go5G Next, Go5G Plus, Go5G, Essentials Value, Magenta MAX, Magenta, and Essentials. Starting with the two Essentials plans, they’re largely identical with 50GB of premium data, unlimited slow (3G speed) hotspot data, and SD quality streaming. Unlimited talk, text, and data in Mexico and Canada are included at low 128Kbps speeds, which is sufficient for messaging, email, and downloading a boarding pass. Taxes and fees are extra with these two plans. Essentials Value starts cheaper for one and two lines, costing $50 and $80 respectively, and $100 for three lines. For Essentials, it costs $60 for the first line, $90 for two or three lines, and $100 for four lines with a current offer.

Moving up to Go5G, you get 100GB of premium data, which is plenty for the majority of users, 15GB of hotspot data, and taxes and fees are included in the sticker price. In Mexico and Canada, you'll get 10GB of high-speed data, with 5GB of data in 11 other countries, and unlimited 256Kbps data in 215+ countries. If you’re traveling, you get four in-flight Wi-Fi sessions. By default, video streaming is set to SD 480p, though it can be set to 720p in your account settings. For a single line, Go5G costs $75, with two or three lines, it costs $130, and for four lines, you’ll pay $155.

Go5G Plus and Go5G Next are mostly the same plan with one key difference. Go5G Plus gives customers the same phone offers as new customers every two years, while Go5G gives them the same benefits every year. Apple TV+ and Netflix Standard with Ads are included with both plans, and Go5G Next also gets Hulu with ads. Video streaming quality can be set to full 4K. In Mexico and Canada, these plans get 15GB of high-speed data, and 5GB of high-speed data in 215 other destinations. For a single line, Go5G Plus costs $90, with two or three lines, it costs $150, and for four lines, you’ll pay $185. For a single line, Go5G Next costs $100, it’s $170 with two, $180 with three lines, and $225 for four lines.

The remaining Magenta and Magenta MAX plans are similar to Go5G and Go5G Plus, respectively. The Magenta plans have a bit less hotspot data and international data but are also a little cheaper. One of the biggest differences between Magenta MAX and Go5G Plus is the lack of new phone savings. If you like to buy your phones unlocked, it could be worth the savings to go with a Magenta MAX over Go5G Plus.

Most of T-Mobile’s plans have 55+, military, and first responder options that are cheaper. A single line of Go5G Plus, for example, costs $90 per month, while Go5G Plus Military costs $75. T-Mobile also allows you to bring multiple lines to these cheaper plans, so if you qualify, make sure to pick the right plan.
