We have already told you how to set up an eSIM on your Apple phone, such as the iPhone XR, XS, and iPad . But if you need to set up your eSIM on Apple Watch , pay attention because here we will tell you how to do so.

What is an eSIM?

An eSIM is a digital SIM card , that is, a chip already embedded in your Apple Watch, so you don’t need to insert an actual chip into any slot. As a matter of fact, some cellphones, including iPhones, support this technology. This way, you can use two SIMs (Dual SIM), in other words, a digital card and a physical card. Therefore, with a single device, you can use two phone numbers at the same time.

To explain, here we will tell you in greater detail what is an eSIM and how it works.

Apple Watch and eSIMs

As a device that can operate as an extension of your cellphone, the Apple Watch -or smartwatches from Apple – also allow you to use Dual SIM funciontaolities.

How to set up an eSIM on Apple Watch?

In particular, the eSIM on the Apple Watch works thanks to the eSIM manager installed on the iPhone. So, to learn more, check the requirements below:

What do you need?

– Have an iPhone XS, XS Max, or XR device with the latest version of iOS (iPhone operating system).

– Have an Apple Watch Series 4 or 3 (GPS + Cellular) with the latest version of WatchOS (Apple Watch operating system).

– Check that the operator supports eSIM on Apple Watch devices.

What do I have to do?

Setting up the eSIM on an Apple Watch consists of two phases:

  • Pair Apple Watch to iPhone
  • Add data plan

To clarify, below we describe each phase and its respective steps simply:

holafly-apple-watch

1. Pair Apple Watch to iPhone

Follow these steps to pair your iPhone to your Apple Watch. After all, you’ll be able to control the functions of your iPhone through the Apple Watch. However, they still need to be near to each other so that they remain connected and work paired up.

Time required: 10 minutes.

Steps to synchronize your cellphone with your Apple Watch:

  • Connect your iPhone to the internet Make sure your cellphone is connected to a WiFi network or your cellular data plan is activated.
  • Activate Bluetooth Go to Settings, Bluetooth, and then activate it.
  • Turn on your Apple Watch To turn on your Apple Watch, press and hold the side button until you see the Apple logo.
  • Connect your iPhone to your Apple Watch Bring your iPhone near your Apple Watch and wait until the message “Use your iPhone to set up this Apple Watch” appears on your iPhone, then tap Continue.
  • Confirm that the Apple Watch is paired to your iPhone Center the watch face in the viewfinder on your iPhone. Wait for a message to say that your Apple Watch is paired.
  • Set up your Apple Watch Click to set up Apple Watch. Keep in mind that if you have already had an Apple Watch, you may want to choose a backup.
  • Agree to Terms and Conditions Read the Terms and Conditions and tap Agree.
  • Create a passcode It’s important to set up a passcode when going through money transactions or payments.
  • Choose the apps for your Apple Watch Install the apps of your choice on the Apple Watch.
  • Confirm both devices are synced Wait until the pairing procedure is finished. The devices should be near each other until you hear a sound and a light press on the Apple Watch.
  • If you need more information Certainly, you can find more specifications to set up your Apple Watch on the Apple support page .

holafly-apple-watch-synch

2. Add data plan

Follow these steps to add a data plan via eSIM to your Apple Watch. Once you finish, you’ll be able to turn off or leave your iPhone at home and go for a walk with your watch, as it will have an independent internet connection.

  • On your iPhone, open the Apple Watch app. Tap the My Watch tab , then tap Cellular.
  • Tap Set Up Cellular. Follow the instructions for your carrier. Enter your username and password to access the account you manage with your carrier.
  • Review the Terms and Conditions, fee, and tap Agree. Another key point is that the activation fee is usually around between $5 USD and $10.
  • The download of the eSIM profile to your Apple Watch will begin. This process will take a few minutes.
  • You will be notified of service activation . Some carriers notify you by SMS on your watch , others do it by popping up on your iPhone.
  • Your new profile will appear under Cellular . This is inside the Apple Watch app .
  • Your watch will already appear with a 4G signal indicator.

In conclusion, your Apple Watch will work as an extension of your cellphone. So, if your cellphone has x contact numbers (and one of them is an eSIM), your Apple Watch will be able to answer calls, make calls, and send or receive messages as if it were your cellphone.

Keep this in mind!

  • Apple Watch as an extension of your cellphone: With Apple smartwatches, you can dial out and receive calls, and send and receive messages, among other essential functions, all without the need to have your cellphone nearby.
  • Compatibility between Apple Watch and iPhone: In the case of Apple Watch Series 3 (GPS and Cellular), iPhone 6 and later versions are compatible. For Apple Watch Series 3 (GPS), iPhone 5s or later versions are compatible.
  • Multiple numbers on your Apple Watch: On your Apple Watch you can use up to five numbers, but not at the same time, only one at a time.
  • To point out, the data consumption used on your Apple Watch is deducted from your main line on the iPhone.

How to setup esim for apple watch.

Setup Esim for Apple Watch

The eSIM is a digital SIM card for the Apple Watch. This SIM card is already embedded in the Apple Watch therefore it does not need to insert any chip. This technology is supported by several handsets, including the iPhone. This allows you to utilize two SIM cards, or a digital card and a physical card. As a result, you can use two phone numbers simultaneously with a single device. The Apple Watch allows you to employ dual SIM functionality as a gadget that can function as an extension of your mobile phone. The eSIM feature on the Apple Watch allows users to activate a cellular plan on their watch without a physical SIM card. Here is the detailed process to set up the Apple Watch Esim.

Buy Airtel Postpaid with exciting benefits!

It is actually very easy to setup a SIM card for the Apple Watch. You need to follow a few guidelines to complete the process successfully. When you enable your Apple Watch eSIM, you can stay connected even when your iPhone is not nearby. This function is particularly beneficial for individuals who wish to leave their phone at home while going for a run or workout. With eSIM, you may use your Apple Watch to make and receive calls as well as send and receive messages without the need for a real SIM card.

First, you need to determine whether your Apple Watch supports eSIM. On your iPhone, open the Watch app and select the “Mobile Data” option. If the “Mobile Data” tab is absent, your Apple Watch may not be eSIM compatible.

One must ensure that they are using the most recent version of watchOS. To see if your Apple Watch is eSIM compatible, launch the Watch app on your iPhone and navigate to the “Mobile Data” option. If the “Mobile Data” tab is missing, your Apple Watch may not be able to support eSIM.

Once you click on the “Mobile Data” option, select “Add a Plan.” This will bring up a list of carriers that support eSIM on Apple Watch. You may simply choose the carrier you want to use for your eSIM plan. After successfully activating the eSIM plan, the details of your carrier and plan will be displayed on the Watch app’s “Cellular” tab. To use the eSIM, your Apple Watch must be linked to a cellular network.

To verify this, swipe up on the watch face to open the Control Center, then tap on the “Cellular” symbol. The cellular icon should show a green dot to indicate that it is linked to a cellular network. Once your Apple Watch is connected to a cellular network, you can make and receive calls, as well as send and receive messages, even if your iPhone is not within range.

Steps to setup eSIM on Apple Watch

The Apple Watch is a wearable smartwatch that allows you to do things like make phone calls, send text messages, and check email. One of the most significant advantages of owning a smartwatch is the ability to view notifications without having to look at your smartphone. To notify you of a new notification, you receive a tone and a gentle vibration on your wrist.

If you do not want to be bothered by the loudness, you can mute the notifications and keep the gentle vibration on. The Apple Watch allows you to simply stay up-to-date with what’s going on without becoming side-tracked.

The Workout app on the Apple Watch lets you select from multiple workouts to track various metrics such as time, active and total calories burned, heart rate, and more during the workout, depending on which one you select.

Another way to stay active with Apple Watch is by closing your activity rings. They have become popular among Apple Watch users. The activity rings are daily goals that help you stay active throughout the day and can be an excellent tool for reminding you to exercise or even stand up from time to time. You can even collect awards for completing your rings and challenge friends to a friendly competition.

You can rapidly reply to notifications, such as answering a phone call or responding to a text message, without picking up and unlocking your iPhone.

You can transfer music on your watch and use it to play songs on its own. The Apple Watch allows you to connect a pair of AirPods through Bluetooth, allowing you to listen to music wirelessly from the watch. This is especially useful if you are working out or participating in an activity where lugging around your iPhone would be cumbersome. The Apple Watch with AirPods is an ideal pairing for listening music on the go.

To set up the eSIM for Apple Watch, first, you need to pair your iPhone to your Apple Watch. Both gadgets need to be near to stay paired and connected. Then you will need to synchronise your cell phone with your Apple Watch. It will take approximately 10 minutes to complete the process.

Make sure to keep the internet or the Wi-Fi on during this process.

Then you need to switch on the Bluetooth. Go to the settings and activate the Bluetooth option.

After this, you need to bring your iPhone closer to your Apple Watch and wait until the message “Use your iPhone to set up this Apple Watch” displays on your iPhone, then touch the Continue option.

The next step is to confirm that your Apple Watch is connected to your iPhone. Wait for a message to pop up on the screen to say that your Apple Watch is paired.

To set up Apple Watch, click on the setup option. Keep in mind that if you have previously owned an Apple Watch, you may wish to select a backup.

Read and accept the terms and conditions to proceed further. You may also create a password. Now you can install the apps of your choice on your Apple Watch accordingly. Wait till the pairing process is complete. Keep the devices close together until you hear a sound and a light press on the Apple Watch. You are all set to use your device now.

Buy the latest Apple Watch to explore more features and get the latest technological experience on your hand.

How to activate and set up eSIM on an Apple Watch

The embedded memory is one of the technologies that Apple is actively promoting. The main feature of this new communication format is that no physical medium is needed to connect to the provider's network, so you don't need to insert a SIM card into a special slot. This solution opens up new opportunities for manufacturers of mobile equipment, which can move away from the usual solutions and expand the functionality of their equipment. For example, users of the latest Apple Watch series can now connect their own mobile package to their watches, and this does not require an increased size of the case for a SIM card slot. If you already have an Apple Watch with eSIM, this short guide on how to properly activate the plan and configure it for comfortable use will come in handy.

Is it possible to insert a SIM card into an Apple Watch?

How to activate esim on an apple watch.

The embedded module can be activated remotely since this component can be automatically encoded and adapted to the parameters of the provider's network. The subscriber only receives a QR code from the operator, which will become the main activation key.

For activating the eSIM package in an Apple Watch, you need to go to the main menu. First of all, you need to create an account, which you can do using the telecom provider that is already active on your smartphone. This procedure is performed in a few clicks using the Apple Watch app. Launch the application, then select the "My Watch" tab and then "Cellular connection". Among the available actions, you will see a "Set up cellular communications" option. Click on it to start creating the main profile.

The next step is to create a second account that will be linked to the eSIM module. To do this, you will need to manage your watch from your smartphone via an app. In this step, find the "Add a new plan" option. Tap on it to launch the camera, scan the code and activate the previously purchased eSIM plan. If the camera doesn't work, enter all subscription data required manually.

Which Apple Watch models support eSIM

The latest Apple Watch series now integrates eSIM. The very technology of the embedded communication module appeared recently, so only some models of this brand have such an addition. At the moment, the eSIM module is installed in watches from the third to the fifth series, but judging by the popularity of this technology, it will start appearing in all new models.

Although modern SIM cards have become much smaller, to add a slot it would be necessary to enlarge the watch case. However, the manufacturer's designers do not want to alter the achieved balance and abandon the current elegant form: a thin watch with high-tech features.

Many users are interested in whether there is a SIM card inside Apple Watches, but it all depends on the series. For example, the Apple Watch 3 can be configured so that the device supports cellular communication, but you do not need to insert a SIM card into it. The device communicates with a smartphone and uses the plan connected to this.

In subsequent series, an embedded communication module appeared, which makes it possible to bind the plan only to the watch (no phone) or set up several plans for more comfortable use. At the same time, the technology of the embedded module does not require a SIM card, so the shape of the watch remains invariably stylish and elegant.

Simple activation in an Apple Watch and the ability to switch between plans are the main advantages of eSIM technology, thanks to which users now have more options, while manufacturers of mobile equipment have managed to maintain stylistic and state-of-the-art configuration and dimensions.

One Tech Tip: Use a roaming eSIM on your summer travels to avoid cellphone data fees

LONDON (AP) — For summer trips overseas, a smartphone is essential for most people. How else will you check Google Maps to find your Airbnb, post an Instagram video from the Eiffel Tower, or WhatsApp friends and family back home?

Of course, if you’re using apps that gobble up data while traveling in a foreign country, there’s always a risk of racking up hefty roaming fees from your phone carrier. The solution? An international travel eSIM for your smartphone.

How do you use this technology? Here are some tips.

What’s an eSIM?

If you’ve ever bought a new cellphone, you’re probably familiar with the SIM card. Short for subscriber identity module, the SIM is a little chip the size of a fingernail that fits into a slot on most phones. Without it, you couldn’t get cell service because it contains your account information and phone number.

But physical SIM cards are slowly being replaced by eSIMs — the e stands for embedded — built into newer phones. These digital versions do the same thing and can make life easier, though people used to physical SIMs might find them confusing at first.

Why should I use an eSIM?

They make switching cell carriers easier. And if you’ve bought a new phone recently, you might not even have a choice: Apple got rid of the SIM card tray starting with the iPhone 14 released in September 2022.

Image

They’re especially beneficial for travelers. If you’ve got a compatible cellphone, you can add an eSIM from a virtual carrier that has better data roaming rates than your home network. Many phones will allow you to add more than one eSIM, making it easy to switch back and forth, or — for phones with the capability — use two at the same time.

Think of the convenience: Gone are the days of arriving in a strange country after a long flight, looking for a local phone company’s airport kiosk, carefully popping open the SIM tray with a pin to swap in the new chip, and trying not to lose the existing one.

Where do I get a roaming eSIM and how much will I pay?

The eSIM market is booming. Kester Mann, director of consumer research at CCS Insight, says there are dozens of providers that can be found online, with names like Nomad, Holafly, Easysim, Airhub and Airalo.

“These guys have a role to play because I think they offer a very affordable and attractive opportunity for international travelers,” Mann said.

The boom means there’s plenty of competition keeping rates low. Prices are typically clearly displayed online, either through a menu of packages on the provider’s website or a calculator based on the amount of data needed and trip length.

Some 800 carriers support eSIMs, according to CCS, so international coverage is extensive. Many eSIM providers offer packages based on country or region, so you can check which ones have good rates for the place you’ll be visiting and sign up in advance. Traveling to Europe and need data for a month covering 30 countries? Airalo offers, for example, 10 gigabytes at $37 while Holafly’s package has unlimited data for 69 euros ($75).

For an upcoming trip to Prague, I bought 5 gigabytes of data for just $5 from Global Yo. I was slightly put off by some negative reviews professing problems buying, installing or activating the company’s eSIMs, but I didn’t have any problems myself.

How do I put an eSIM on my phone?

You’ll need a phone that’s unlocked for use with different wireless carriers.

If you’re not setting up a new phone, the typical activation method is with a QR code, or a more conventional string of numbers and letters. If you’re planning a trip and buy one before you leave, it’s a good idea to print out the code if you don’t want to activate right away.

For iPhones, go to your Settings menu, then to either the Cellular or Mobile Service section, then tap Add eSIM. You’ll be prompted to scan the code, or manually enter it. The process is similar for Android users. Samsung has a guide for Galaxy devices, and Google has a help page for Pixel users, while eSIM carriers have step-by-step instructions. Apple has a YouTube video , as well as tip sheets on using eSIMs for international travel and on using two eSIMs simultaneously.

If you’ve got a phone that supports dual eSIMs, you “can pick potentially the best network based on price and or coverage” while traveling, said Mann.

Some carriers have their own apps to manage eSIMs and track data usage.

How do I know if my cellphone can use an eSIM?

More than 200 devices support the technology, CCS Insight says. U.K. phone company Vodafone has a list of compatible devices. Or dial *#06# — an EID code indicates it’s compatible.

For iPhone users, it’s any model released since the XS, XS Max or XR, as well as recent iPads. They’re compatible with any Samsung Galaxy devices released since 2020, and Google Pixel 4 and newer models will work; some Pixel 3 devices also support them.

Does it always make sense to use a travel eSIM?

First check your own carrier’s roaming costs for the places you’re visiting. Sometimes it’s not worth it.

“Roaming costs these days are far lower and less prohibitive than they once were,” said Mann. They’ve even been abolished for European Union residents crossing the 27-nation bloc’s internal borders. But travelers in Britain, which has left the EU, are facing them again for travel to the continent.

Upgrade your M4 iPad Pro travel carry with these accessories

Avatar for Fernando Silva

As someone who uses their iPad Pro as their main computer, I tend to bring it with me wherever I go. One of my favorite aspects about the iPad is that it is basically a modular device without actually saying it’s modular. Between the pin connectors, Thunderbolt port, the magnets, and its lightweight chassis, this makes it the perfect computer to pair with many accessories. So here are some of my favorite accessories I have been using with my new M4 iPad Pro, specifically centered around travel.

If you want to see a hands-on video of all of these accessories and more, be sure to check out our video below!

Native Apple accessories

I want to mention briefly that I use Apple’s native accessories for the M4 iPad Pro. If you use your iPad as your main computer, like I do, then getting the new Magic Keyboard is a must. It completely changes how you use the iPad by turning it into a laptop-like experience. It is pretty pricey, but it’s the only true way to make the iPad compete with something like a Macbook Air. Secondly, I am using the new Apple Pencil Pro. I am no designer or artist, but I tend to take a lot of notes and work with Affinity Photo. The new updates to the Apple Pencil Pro , like haptics, the squeeze gesture, and Find My support, have been welcome upgrades. But now that we have those out of the way, lets get into the fun part!

Shinjuku Messenger Bag

I am always looking for new backpacks and messenger bags to carry all of my tech goodies. This new Shinjuku Messenger by Waterfield checks off many boxes for people looking for a high-quality leather bag that’s lightweight and has the perfect amount of storage for a work commute or a quick work weekend. The combination of full-grain leather on the outer flap and their new X-Pac canvas material makes for a nice, well-rounded package.

  • The compact is made for the 11in iPad Pro and smaller devices
  • Full is made for the 13in iPad Pro and also fits the 13in Macbook air and other similar-sized devices
  • It comes in three colors: Brown Waxed Canvas, Storm Grey and Black
  • Dedicated compartment for iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard
  • Larger, more open area for larger items
  • Internal water bottle holder
  • Exterior zipper on flap for quick access to items

travel sim for apple watch

Overall, I think this is a great option for someone who isn’t looking for a large backpack but more of a slick and minimal messenger bag look. You can also fit much more than I thought you could fit in the bag itself. The compact size is $229 and the full size is $239, which is very competitive pricing when considering the build quality and materials.

Woolnut Leather Folio Case

The M4 iPad Pro is not a cheap package, especially when considering the additional Apple accessories. I spent around $1800 on my 1TB iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil Pro. So, the first thing I did was to make sure I had a safe way to store my iPad while still being able to bring it with me. The new Leather folio by Woolnut was perfect. This is essentially a perfectly sized leather sleeve that fits your M4 iPad Pro with the Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil Pro. The outside is made of full-grain leather, which smells fantastic, and the inside is made of this extremely soft and satisfying wool felt. So, it will still be protected even if you place your iPad in the sleeve without the keyboard.

  • It comes in 3 leather colors: Black, Cognac & Green
  • It comes in 3 Matte PU material colors: Black, Blue & Green
  • Room for Magic Keyboard & Apple Pencil
  • Zipper protection avoids scratches
  • Dedicated Apple Pencil holder

travel sim for apple watch

Woolnut does offer these in two different material finishes, in leather and in this matte PU material as well. Both are functionally identical, so if you want to save some money, the matte PU version is on sale for under $60, while the full-grain leather version is $160.

ProtoArc USB- C Hub Mouse

I love it when a product can serve multiple functions. This mouse by ProtoArc does just that. On the surface, it looks like a normal lightweight and portable mouse. It has all your normal functions, like connecting to 3 different devices, a scroll wheel, an extra shortcut button, and charging via USB-C. But the mouse actually houses a mini USB-C hub! If you look at the rear of the mouse, you can actually pull out a 3 in 1 USB-C hub, which is perfect for those on-the-go situations. It has:

  • HDMI 2.0 port
  • USB-A 3.0 port (up to 5GBps)
  • USB-C power passthrough port with 60W support

Of course there are USB-C hubs out there with many more ports and with faster data and power speeds, but for something small compact that is just part of another product, I love this thing. Not only that but it’s only $50 (sometimes on sale for $40). This has been one of my favorite recommendations for anyone looking for a portable mouse.

travel sim for apple watch

5 in 1 Magic Power Bank

In the same light as the ProtoArc mouse, I wanted to find a charger that did more than just plug into a wall and charge my iPad. Raycon, yes, the headphone company recently released a slew of power-related products, and they are actually great! I recommend checking them out but we are going to focus on their 5 in 1 charger.

So, how is this a 5 in 1 charger? Firstly, it looks and acts as a typical wall charger. It connects to any AC outlet and has a USB-C and USB-A port that outputs 20W. Charges of this size typically can charge at higher wattage, but since this is only for an iPad, the 20W is more than enough, especially considering everything else. Not only does it charge your plugged-in devices, but it also houses a 10,000mAh battery that is constantly charging itself when it’s plugged into the wall. It doesn’t stop there; then it has two short built-in cables, a USB-C cable, and a lightning cable to charge your devices on the go. It also has a Magsafe puck on its side that supports up to 15W of charging. Then the last two things to mention are that it has a small kickstand for your phone and an LED screen that gives you the battery percentage of the power bank.

This is the perfect travel charger for iPads and iPhones. My only gripe is the output. It only charges at 20W, so I wouldn’t consider this a solution for a MacBook.

Other accessories

As I mentioned above, be sure to check out our video here to see the rest of the accessories in my pack. I bring up products like the Sonos Ace, a Magsafe battery bank a cleaning kit and more! Let me know what you think of these accessories. What type of accessories do you use with your iPad? Let’s discuss in the comments below!

Apple reportedly has plans for a thinner iPhone, MacBook Pro and Apple Watch

The ipad pro was just the beginning, according to mark gurman..

Just how thin can a Macbook Pro get? We may soon find out. According to Bloomberg ’s Mark Gurman, Apple’s mission to make its thinnest product ever won’t stop at the iPad Pro — the company also has plans for a skinnier Macbook Pro, Apple Watch and, as The Information also reported last month, iPhone. According to Gurman, Apple is on the cusp of ushering in “a new class of Apple devices that should be the thinnest and lightest products in their categories across the whole tech industry.” Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has also shared his belief that the new Apple Watch Series 10 will get a thinner chassis than its predecessor — plus a larger screen (45mm and 49mm, compared to 41mm and 45mm).

Adding further fuel to the earlier iPhone rumors, Gurman says he too has been told the slimmed-down iPhone could come as early as 2025 with the introduction of the iPhone 17 line. There’s no timeline yet on the rest of the products named in the report. The upcoming thin iPhone is expected to be pricier than the current iPhone Pro Max, and have a screen sized somewhere between that of the Pro Max and the standard iPhone.

Update, June 17 2024, 5:26AM ET: This article has been updated to include analyst Ming-Chi Kuo's insight on the Apple Watch Series 10.

Set up cellular on Apple Watch

With a cellular connection on Apple Watch, you can make calls, reply to messages, receive notifications, and more — even while you’re away from your iPhone.

Before you start

Make sure that you have the latest software on your iPhone and your Apple Watch .

Check for updates to your carrier settings .

Make sure that you have an eligible cellular service plan with a supported carrier . Your iPhone and Apple Watch must use the same carrier,* and you must be within your carrier's network when you set up cellular on your watch.

If you have an enterprise or corporate cellular service plan, check with your company or carrier to see if they support this feature. Pre-paid accounts and some older accounts aren’t currently supported. To make sure that your account is eligible, contact your carrier.

* An Apple Watch that you set up for a family member  can use a different carrier than your iPhone uses.

You can activate cellular when you first set up your Apple Watch , or when you set up a watch for a family member. During setup, look for the option to set up cellular, then follow the onscreen steps.

You can also set up cellular later from the Apple Watch app:

On your iPhone, open the Apple Watch app.

Tap the My Watch tab, then tap Cellular.

Tap Set Up Cellular.

Follow the instructions for your carrier. You might need to contact your carrier for help.

You might see a phone number assigned to your Apple Watch that differs from the phone number assigned to your iPhone. The number shown for your Apple Watch is for your carrier's billing or tracking purposes only; your iPhone and Apple Watch share the same number.

Set up cellular on a family member's Apple Watch

You can set up a cellular Apple Watch for a family member If your mobile carrier supports the use of a managed Apple Watch, you're given the option to add the watch to your plan during setup. Look for the option to set up cellular, then follow the onscreen steps. If your carrier doesn't support cellular on a managed Apple Watch, you might be able to use an alternative carrier.

If you don't initially set up cellular on your family member's Apple Watch, you can do it later:

Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone.

Tap All Watches, tap your family member's Apple Watch, then tap Done.

Tap Cellular, then tap Set Up Cellular.

To see the phone number assigned to your family member's Apple Watch after you set up cellular, go to Settings on the watch, then tap Phone.

Setting up a managed Apple Watch for a family member is available only in  certain countries or regions .

If you're in China mainland, you must verify your identity when setting up cellular on a family member’s Apple Watch, as required by local regulations. Contact your carrier for further assistance if needed.

Connect to a cellular network

Your Apple Watch with cellular automatically switches to the most power-efficient wireless available: it can connect to your iPhone when itʼs nearby, a Wi-Fi network or cellular.  When your watch connects to cellular, it uses LTE networks. If LTE isn't available, your watch will try to connect to UMTS if your carrier supports it.

When your watch connects to a cellular network, you can check the signal strength from Control Centre or the Cellular complication that you can add to most watch faces.  To open Control Centre, touch and hold the bottom of the screen, then swipe up.

Full cellular signal in Control Centre on Apple Watch.

The Cellular button turns green when you have a connection. The green bars show the signal strength.

Control Centre on Apple Watch.

The Cellular button turns white when your cellular plan is active, but your watch is connected via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi to your iPhone.

Learn what your Apple Watch can do while connected to Wi-Fi or cellular , even when your iPhone isn't nearby.

Changing carriers

Your iPhone and Apple Watch If you change carriers on your iPhone, you need to remove the previous service plan on your Apple Watch and sign up for a new plan.* Here’s how:

Your Apple Watch should automatically switch to the carrier that your iPhone is using. If you need to add a new plan, tap Add a New Plan, then follow the onscreen steps. If your previous plan still appears in the Apple Watch app, you can  remove it .

If you need help, contact your carrier.

* Carrier fees may apply. Contact your carrier for details.

Transfer your cellular plan to a new Apple Watch

When you’re ready to start using a new Apple Watch, you can transfer cellular service from your old watch to your new one. Here's how:

Remove the cellular plan  from your old Apple Watch.

Pair your new Apple Watch with your iPhone. During setup, tap “Set up Cellular” to add a cellular plan.

Some carriers allow you to transfer your existing plan to your new Apple Watch directly from the Apple Watch app.

If you don’t see an option to transfer your cellular plan, contact your carrier for help.

Remove your cellular plan

You can remove your cellular plan at any time:

information button

Tap Remove [carrier] Plan. Tap again to confirm.

iPhone showing Cellular screen in Watch app

You might need to contact your carrier to cancel your cellular subscription.*

When you erase and unpair your Apple Watch, you also get the option to remove the plan from your Apple Watch. When asked, choose Erase All to remove the plan.

International roaming with your Apple Watch

With watchOS 9.1 and later, international roaming is available on cellular models of Apple Watch Series 5 and later, Apple Watch SE and later, and Apple Watch Ultra.

To get international roaming on your Apple Watch, contact your iPhone carrier to add your watch to your iPhone cellular roaming plan.  For international roaming to work on your Apple Watch, your carrier must support VoLTE and roaming.  Not all carriers support international roaming on Apple Watch and coverage in other countries is determined by your carrier.

To turn on international roaming, open the Settings app on your Apple Watch. Tap Cellular, then turn on Data Roaming.

International roaming is not supported for cellular models of Apple Watch used in Family Setup.

To cover the LTE and UMTS bands used around the world, cellular models of Apple Watch come in regional models for the Americas, China mainland and Europe/Asia Pacific. Unlike iPhone, there isn't a worldwide Apple Watch model that supports all cellular bands used globally. Find out  which carriers in your country or region offer cellular service for Apple Watch .

To check your cellular data usage, use the Apple Watch app. Open the app on your iPhone, tap the My Watch tab, tap Cellular, then scroll to the Cellular Data Usage section.

No alt supplied for Image

Turning on cellular for extended periods uses more battery power. Also, some apps might not update without a connection to your iPhone.

To receive SMS, MMS or push notifications from third-party apps on your Apple Watch with cellular, your paired iPhone must be powered on and connected to Wi-Fi or cellular.

I tested Meta Quest 3’s Travel Mode on a 15-hour flight, and it puts Apple Vision Pro to shame

I’m never flying without this VR headset again

Meta Quest 3

Computex 2024 was easily one of my favorite shows in recent memory, but the 15-hour flight to get there isn’t great. I thought I’d experienced long-haul in the past with a 7-hour excursion to New York, but this was a whole different level that I wasn’t ready for.

And chances are you know the common problems — in-flight entertainment selection sucks and looks even worse on that TFT display, looking down at the entertainment you bring onto the plane with you in a laptop or a Steam Deck creates proper neck pain, and no matter how much you distract yourself, the surroundings of being on a plane can get real dull real fast.

But when Meta announced Travel Mode for Quest 3 and 2, I was intrigued (skeptical too) by whether it would actually make for a good experience. I’ve been burned by Apple Vision Pro after all (more on that later), but I’m here to say that using Meta’s VR headset on a plane is a game changer in making over 6,000 miles of travel go by in a flash.

Meta Quest 3: $495 @ Amazon

Meta Quest 3: $495 @ Amazon With a 4K+ Infinite display that is a bright, colorful joy to see, great feeling controllers with accurate tracking (even hand tracking too if you’d rather ditch them), a huge library of over 500 apps and over two hours of battery, there are a ton of reasons why we rank this as our best VR headset .

Aubika Mini Case for Meta Quest 3: $21 @ Amazon with coupon applied

Aubika Mini Case for Meta Quest 3: $21 @ Amazon with coupon applied For traveling with your Quest 3, you’re going to need a case, and Aubika’s mini option is my favorite by far. A tough exterior, soft, plush internal fabrics to keep it safe, and a small-enough form to fit in the bottom of my personal backpack.

What is Travel Mode?

Meta Quest Travel Mode

Announced a few weeks ago, Travel Mode is a mixture of things. First and foremost, it tunes the motion tracking algorithms to accommodate all the expected movements of an airplane, like turbulence. Second, the browser will now open the window to connect to in-flight Wi-Fi when prompted. And third (the bit I didn’t test because my bosses didn't allow me to expense business class tickets), a pilot program with Lufthansa to develop a suite of mixed-reality content to absorb.

Since I didn’t really have Wi-Fi access to go fully online all the way back in coach (just watch the in-flight entertainment), I was limited to what I had saved on my device. So let’s consider this a test of what I’m going to call the “real Travel Mode.” By that I mean those that don’t have thousands of dollars to spend on a lavish flight experience — only enough to get an aisle seat at the back of the plane.

How to turn on Travel Mode on Meta Quest 3 and 2

Meta Quest 3 Travel Mode

This can be done in three steps:

  • Go to Settings and scroll down to Experimental.
  • Scroll down this list of experimental settings and hit the toggle next to Travel mode to turn it on
  • Now you’ll find a Travel mode option inside your Quick settings panel to turn on or off at your discretion

And that’s it! Just make sure you’re running v65 of the Meta Quest software and you’ll see this option appear.

Getting around one key frustration

Meta Quest 3

Before I discuss this huge leap forward in in-flight entertainment for me, a key app recommendation — well, it's more of a requirement for watching films and TV shows, as there isn’t an online store or viewer to download and watch content offline.

Get Skybox VR Video Player , as the $9.99 price tag is worth it for what you get in terms of playing 2D and 3D video content locally in all kinds of video formats. And since your Quest 3 is viewed by your computer as an Android device when plugged in, just get your content (legally downloaded of course) and add it into the file structure of the headset. I ended up taking a couple seasons of "Silicon Valley" with me, alongside a few games to dabble with.

A revelation whether your sitting or laying down

Meta Quest 3

For the first time in a long while, I was very fortunate to get an entire row to myself. Normally I’m cramped in a middle seat between two serial snorers, but I must have earned some good karma to actually get the adjacent two seats to really stretch out and create a makeshift bed.

Whether I was laying down or sitting up, the Quest 3 was virtually faultless in my time with it on the plane — provided you’re okay with some dangling cables. Flights are loud, so you’re obviously going to need headphones, and the latency of Bluetooth headphones with Meta’s headset makes them unusable. And of course the battery life will not last the full duration, so a charging cable is essential.

Meta Quest 3 Travel Mode

But when you’ve got these tucked behind you, the experience is unmatched. Screw that crappy display you get in the back of the seat — transport yourself to a virtual movie theater and watch to your heart’s content.

Even in moments where accurate tracking is essential, like playing Under Cover (basically a VR version of Time Crisis), everything felt great and I popped off accurate shots easily, even when the flight got a little bumpy.

Then I turned my attention to productivity, and opened up Virtual Desktop (the one of three display mirroring apps that can actually work without an internet connection) to use it as a virtual display for my M3 Pro MacBook Pro . I positioned the display to sit directly in front of me, mimicking the seat back screen and I was off to the races typing up my articles and editing video with virtually zero latency.

Meta Quest 3 Travel Mode

Of course, a more comfortable option for this kind of screen mirroring would be a pair of AR glasses like the Viture Pro or Xreal Air 2 , but the elimination of the constricting 50-degree field of view to the uber wide 110-degrees is a different of night and day when it comes to looking off at a second display in your peripheral view.

Whatever I threw at it in the difficult surroundings of a flight, the Quest 3 held up with no problems. The only obstacle was my own eye strain, but after a short rest I was right back in.

How does this compare to Apple Vision Pro?

Apple Vision Pro airplane

When traveling to Costa Rica in late March, I got a chance to test the Apple Vision Pro in Travel Mode on the flight back to London, and the results are very mixed. My colleague Katie Kozuch had a better experience , but with both of these opinions taken into account, I'm confident that Meta Quest 3 the clear winner for traveling vast distances. Let me explain.

It all started with the floating screens that work (mostly) fine when in perfect lighting conditions, but the moment you challenge it when the lights go down for a long haul flight, you’re regularly greeted with a “Tracking error” warning message. With Quest 3, I never faced an error message — even when trying to trick it by looking out of an airplane window!

Next, hand tracking is largely OK around 7 times out of 10 during my in-flight usage. There were some frustrations where my pinches were not registered, and while using your hands to navigate around VisionOS is already kind of slow, you can imagine it’s even slower within the bumpy confines of a plane seat.

Meta Quest 3 Travel Mode

Thanks to the simple addition of controllers, Quest 3 is infinitely faster to interact with. But even in the situation where you don’t have these on you, hand tracking feels a lot more reliable and accurate in Meta’s headset.

And finally, a humorous observation when I wanted to access the settings to turn off People Awareness. Upon opening settings, I felt like I was losing my mind trying to find the settings screen, which turned out to be hiding under my seat. Not entirely sure what it was doing down there, but without a better way of saying it, Travel Mode can do with some work.

Meta Quest 3 Travel Mode

It is worth bearing in mind that the EyeSight display on Vision Pro does help give Cabin Crew visibility of you looking at them. The amount of times I had a member of the crew wave directly in front of my face even though I was in pass-through mode — it requires you to take your headset off to talk to anyone, whereas I didn’t have to do so with Apple’s headset.

Getting me excited for the future

Meta Quest 3

In my last couple of years covering headsets, I’ve noticed one thing: the parallel paths of development between VR headsets and AR glasses are starting to merge. Don’t get me wrong, it’ll take a few years to get there, as chipset and battery technology needs to catch up.

But it’s happening, and the companies you think of in the AR glasses space are already experimenting. For example, one prototype I’ve heard about in conversations with one company already has a Snapdragon chip inside and a 70-degree field of view. The problem? Selling these would cost around $5,000 given the sheer amount of intricate custom engineering to make it work, and there is no built-in battery.

That is where for the longer journeys, a VR headset really comes into its own, and the Meta Quest 3 stands heads and shoulders above in terms of its Travel Mode capabilities — making that reasonable price all the more valuable. But Meta has also been thinking about how it can condense its tech into a pair of glasses .

The promise is clear. If the Quest 3 can do this now, I can’t begin to imagine the breakthrough that will happen when this tech is condensed down into a pair of specs.

  • keclear My experience with the Vision Pro is a lot more positive on my recent trip from Boston to Singapore. What matters to me the most is the image quality, which the Oled screens of the Vision Pro wins. Once I get the movies to start playing, I don’t care about the controls that much. The Vision Pro can lose tracking occasionally which is annoying, but it only takes a second or two to recover. Also, turning on the reading light in a very dark plane helps maintaining tracking. I watched two seasons of Slow Horses which makes the trip feel so much shorter. Reply
