I started my business back in 2020 after realizing how much I love to help others while also getting paid to do so. The most rewarding part of working in the travel industry is helping others fulfill their travel dreams while still building positive client relationships with each and every one of you.

We wanted to book a trip and had no clue where to start. Jim Lash was absolutely amazing and so helpful . Our trip was amazing to Englamd and Paris was amazing. Thank you for all your hard work .

I very much appreciate Mr. Jim Lash' support and help "after" booking our multi-segment trip to Argentina. The Corona Virus came to the fore just days ahead of our (6 men) trip to Argentina. The fees had already been paid and all plans set into place... serious outlay of cash. Fast forward several weeks and I place a call to Jim asking that he look into having the airlines refund our monies due to the cancellations. He did just that and within the day secured the refunds. That took a lot of the headache out of my/our day. I/we could not be more appreciative. Please give this company your consideration, he earned every bit of it for us and went well and above duty in securing our refunds. I/we will be using him in the future. A. Melonas

Age 30, 2-12-19: Where to start, well it was over a year ago when I thought, "Well I'm 6 months away from the wedding and I'm in charge of planning the honeymoon. I need to get on it. Maybe I'll see about a travel agent that help point me in the right direction." Giving Unique Destinations a call from seeing his yelp reviews was the absolute best decision I could have made. Jim is an absolute rock star. Instantly got on my same page and found us several options in our needs. It was amazing, we chat on the phone maybe 2-3 times and several emails later. My whole honeymoon was done!!!! And don't get my wrong I had some doubts about if this was the right decision, but wow, my expectations were blown away. THE TRIP WAS AMAZZZZZZZZZZZZING!!!! He had a well written itinerary and maps to go with it all emailed to me so I could make sure we never lost a map or confirmation code. Everything was well prepared and the whole thing became one of the best moments of my life, PERIOD. I couldn't recommend him enough. My uncle loves to travel and see the world with his family. They are always just taking a cruise to Mexico or Jamaica, you get it. So when his son just got engaged, he asked what I had done. I told him about Jim and BAM, Jim Hooked them up and my even called me to thank me. "Jim's Awesome!" Trust me when I say, your in good hands.

This was our first time working with a travel agent. Jim was amazing and helped make this trip a reality.

Jim booked a trip to France and England for me and my friends. I was so glad I choose to use him and didn't try to book it myself. He found me really awesome boutique hotels that I would have never found. Then the worst happened and a snowstorm in Philadelphia canceled our flight. Jim was awesome in rebooking everything and making sure it didn't ruin our trip. I had never used a travel agent before and I am so happy I decided to for this trip.

I want to thank Jim at Unique Destinations for being so awesome with planning my New York vacation. My vacation was amazing. I had an amazing time. We flew with United Airlines, and stayed at The Roosevelt Hotel on 45th. The process from start to finish was flawless. We had no problems at either check in with the airline nor the hotel. I was amazed at how smooth everything went. New York is amazing and I recommend everyone to book a vacation there. As far as dealing with Unique Destinations itself, I highly recommend this travel agency. They are very professional, understanding, and very friendly. I can't say enough about how much Jim helped our group both during the complicated planning process of our trip to Argentina, but also during the the cleanup process after our travel plans were halted at the very last minute due to newly implemented travel restrictions because of the COVID-19 virus. Jim was a true gentleman to work with and underpaid himself every step of the way. He will be the only person I call for future travel planning. I know when the going gets tough, he's there right by my side. Thank you Jim!

We met with Jim, the owner, this afternoon. Super Person. He pointed out parts of the trip where we would be better off, (cheaper) booking other ways. His aim was to save us money on our trip, rather than his own profit. It is a wild trip, with many different flights, and he was a champ helping us navigate through all of it. He also suggested the best place for us to get money converted here in Las Vegas, to save us some time and money when we are overseas. Then there was hotels. Our favorite was booked, so he found out for us which days it was possible to stay there, and suggested another hotel to stay for the one day our favorite was not available. Then he had great info on the cheapest airline available for the trip. It was Turkish Airlines, which we have never taken, and were a bit nervous about choosing. He really put our minds at rest for that part, with his experiences with them. We are so glad to have found an honest, knowledgeable travel agent, who is watching out for our costs. We would like to recommend him to you, for any of your travel plans!

When we decided to take a trip to Ireland the first thing i did was go online and try to find deals myself. I became overwhelmed quickly. I knew nothing about ireland or where to stay. I was worried id turn it into the lampoons family vacation..I don't even know how i heard about unique destinations but looking back i can honestly say it was fate, destiny, a godsend. Jim was amazing. He was so caring and careful in every single detail from flights to rental car to hotels. He obviously knows the business. We never traveled abroad and honestly didnt know anything. He had expertise in things i wouldn't have even thought of to prepare us for our journey. He was even available during our trip i case we wanted to make changes or needed assistance. If it wasn't for him this trip in no way shape or form would have been possible. It was a trip our family will never forget and honestly quite affordable. We fell in love with ireland and most definitely hope to go back. I just hope Unique Destinations is around when we go.my advice is to be very upfront with them. Tell them all your wants needs and expectations. They will do everything they can to make it happen and if they cant, they will find sometimes even a better solution. He worked as fast as i needed him to and even tweaked things along the way just to meet my expectations. Our family is so grateful for this company. PS... i didn't forget about the enchiladas...lol ***My only advice to future travelers no matter who you book through, parking in other countries is much like parking is here in New York and San Francisco... meaning its limited and expensive so makes sure you are aware of those fees. Especially if you rent a car. Be prepared. Also renting cars is different too. Unless you're willing to make a 5000 deposit and hope nothing happens to the car, buy the insurance. And buy it at the time of booking if you are someone who likes to budget.

I am not sure where to begin. I won a 5 day - 4 night trip for 2 to Hawaii through a company in town, and their travel agent is Unique Destinations and Events, LLC. The owner, Jim Lash, reached out to me immediately, and we started the process of planning out my trip. I had a TON of questions, specific requests, and ideas. I must have emailed Jim five times a day. He came up with multiple resorts, explained everything clearly, and even worked with us on our flight times to maximize our days in Hawaii. We finally settled on all the details and we will be happily sitting on a Hawaiian beach next May. I cannot say enough good things about Jim and Unique Destinations and Events. We will definitely be using them for our next vacation and/or event. Photos forthcoming next year!

It’s official: Internet booking sites are the worst. Which means travel agents are back in a big way, to such a degree that the crème de la crème among them are so selective that they’ll work with only a small group of card-carrying members.

We talked to the top dogs at four very different membership travel companies to find out what kind of VIP hook ups they’ll get you—and how much hand-holding you can expect along the way.

Fischer Travel

The Gist: Founded almost 54 years ago by her father, Bill Fischer—who got his clients into sold-out spots like the Hotel du Cap in Antibes in the ’80s—this family-run business is as exclusive as a club gets. “We have a very serious vetting process,” says Fischer Rosenthal.

The Membership: You might want to sit down for this: a $100,000 initiation fee, plus an annual $25,000 renewal fee, plus service fees for all trip planning. And that’s only if you’re accepted. Right now, Fischer has just 175 members.

The Claim to Fame: One-on-one tennis lessons with John McEnroe, a private tour of the Egyptian pyramids, Christmas dinner cooked by a Michelin-starred chef—you name it, Fischer Rosenthal can do it. If she told us her team could move mountains, we’d almost believe her.

Hand-Holding Quotient: Next-level. “My clients will never check in at a front desk, they will never fill out any forms, they will never have a moment when their trip isn’t absolutely seamless.”

Essentialist

The Gist: Former Travelocity exec Roca ditched digital and went private bespoke in 2017 after realizing travelers didn’t need more choice—they needed more curation. His cabal of experts includes more than 75 journalists and editors specializing in various destinations around the world.

The Membership: A flat fee of $1,400 per household per year includes unlimited travel-planning services by a designated “travel designer” who knows everything about you, from what you like to eat to what you like to drive.

The Claim to Fame: Ultra-insider experiences are the name of Roca’s game, whether it’s the best paella in Majorca at a secret restaurant few locals know or a private dinner in a Venetian palazzo. “It’s not about the price tag,” he says. “It’s about discovering things that are under the radar and unique.”

Hand-Holding Quotient: Minimal. “Our client doesn’t require a lot of hand-holding,” Roca says. “They don’t want people standing at the door of their hotel room every morning. They just want to go.”

The Gist: With partner Jon Ein of private equity firm Foundry Capital, Backlund devised not an agency but a “travel community of like-minded individuals,” in which pay-for-play travel agents wouldn’t be welcome.

The Membership: $4,500 for a full annual membership with unlimited bespoke trip planning , or $1,750 for a one-trip planning fee. “We admit limited members to make sure the service standards are maintained,” Backlund says.

The Claim to Fame: Seamless execution of even the most complicated itineraries, whether it’s an island-hopping extravaganza in the Caribbean via private jet and yacht or a Scottish golf spree with 11 tee times in 11 days.

Hand-Holding Quotient: That’s up to you. “Our clients appreciate a significant portion of discovery—the thirst for exploration is definitely there,” Backlund says. But he’ll still hold your hand if you ask.

Inspirato Pass

The Gist: Handler is like the Thomas Edison of travel clubs . He invented the destination club with Exclusive Resorts in 2002, then went on to create Inspirato , a similar but more affordable club in 2011. The Inspirato Pass , his latest brainchild, is a subscription app.

The Membership: $2,500 per month gets you household booking rights to exclusive trips, events and accommodations—all at no added cost. The catch? After booking a trip, you have to take it before you can reserve another.

The Claim to Fame: There’s the usual hotel suites and over-the-top villas, but what gets really interesting is Inspirato Pass ’s access to marquee events and experiences, from US Open seats to a European river cruise.

Hand-Holding Quotient: Surprisingly high, for an app. “All Inspirato Pass trips include pre-trip planning by our expert travel designers, including custom itineraries,” says Handler. Impressive.

How To Define Your Agency’s Unique Selling Proposition and Why It's Important

In a crowded marketplace, it can be difficult to stand out from the crowd. How does a traveler decide which travel agency or advisor to use if a Google search results in dozens of choices? Having a Unique Selling Proposition (USP) is what sets you apart from the competition and can be why a potential client chooses you over another advisor.

A great USP tells prospects who you are, what makes you different, and why they can trust you with their vacations in just a few sentences. Most importantly, it explains how your service benefits them better than anyone else can.

But figuring out your unique selling proposition isn’t easy. It requires a deep dive into who you are as a business to figure out what’s important to you, who your ideal clients are and what’s important to them, and what makes you different from other sellers of travel. Then, figuring out how to communicate as much of that as possible in two to four sentences.

Travel Market Report spoke to Jamie Jones, president of WhirlAway Travel, a Signature member agency, as well as Zaky Prabowo, CMO and co-founder of WeTravel, the parent company of WeTravel Academy , to find out what goes into crafting a travel agency-specific USP.

What Is a USP? Before we get into crafting your USP, here are some examples. A USP should be one to four sentences long. It should convey who you are, what you do and how that’s different from other agencies. The difference(s) can be called out specifically or inferred.

Market Yourself, Not Your Suppliers A key piece of creating a USP for your agency is understanding that you’re marketing yourself and not the suppliers you sell.

It’s not something that’s commonly done by the travel agency industry. But it was something that was top of mind for WhirlAway’s Jones.

“We’re very much about us and nobody else… It’s necessary to market ourselves as opposed to marketing a product that might bring somebody in,” she told TMR. “I don’t want them to only know us for selling a Regent cruise or selling Tauck. I want them to come to us because we’re going to talk to them and help them determine what the best fit is for them.”

Jones, who with her office manager, used the downtime provided by the COVID-19 pandemic to work on their marketing and business plan says advisors need to step back and ask themselves, “What is the value you bring to the table?”

“You have to have something that is unique to yourself,” she said. Pick three things [about your company]. Two of the three might be matched by another company. But that one item is going to be unique to you and what is going to make you different.”

Take the Time to Think It Through To understand the value you bring to your clients and to get to your differentiators, you first need to understand your business at a deep level. What are your core values? Who is your target demographic and what are their core values? What do your clients get from you when they work with you?

Jones and her office manager used the exercises in the book “Traction: Get a Grip On Your Business” to help figure out WhirlAway’s differentiators. They gave each other homework, used whiteboards, and worked every step in the book to understand the who, what and why of WhirlAway Travel. (They also used a professional copywriter to help with the writing, something Jones suggests advisors invest in.)

“Traction” isn’t the only book that can help travel advisors craft a USP. A search on Amazon turns up several books that can help. The key, Jones said, is to go beyond simply reading the book.

“You can read all you want, but you actually have to implement what you read,” she said.

Use Your Background… For travel advisors, in particular, a background in travel is especially useful when crafting a USP. Sailed on just about every cruise line there is? Let prospective customers know you understand first-hand the differences between each and every cruise line.

Grew up in Asia? Speak Spanish? Lived in Hawaii? These are all unique differentiators that can help set you apart.

If you have employees or work with ICs, their background is just as important.

“Each employee has a value add based on their background, culture, and experiences,” said WeTravel’s Prabowo.  “You can use your background to add immense value to the products you’re selling. For instance, drawing on your personal travel experiences in a specific market to appropriately sell a travel experience your client is looking for.”

… Even If It’s Not In Travel Not everyone has a robust travel background. But that doesn’t mean you don’t bring something unique to your clients.

Perhaps you previously worked as an event planner and planning things down to the tiniest detail is your superpower. Wouldn’t a traveler want a travel advisor who could do that for them?

Or have you worked in the restaurant industry and know how to plan food-related trips that include meals in the best eateries across the country?

Or maybe you’re a parent who perfected the art of kid-friendly vacation planning because you had to do it for yourself and now you understand the specific needs of family travelers.

Develop Differentiators Feel like you don’t have a differentiator yet? That’s okay. Determine something your potential clients want and then dive in to learn it.

“For all travel advisors, whether independent, home agents or franchise owners, there are many external resources available to you to develop knowledge in new areas of travel, setting apart your expertise,” Prabowo said.

At WeTravel Academy, he added, “the most downloaded resources by travel advisors fall into three categories: Sustainability, Wellness, and Inclusive travel. This data tells us that travel advisors are actively seeking ways to upskill and add unique value to the travel market.”
