Located at the base of Mount Mansfield, the tallest peak in Vermont, this resort town is often considered to be the ski capital of the East. The cold months bring winter sports enthusiasts from near and far to the mountain, but you can visit Stowe at any time of year.

In the autumn you’ll be treated to the beautiful colors of the fall leaves, and in the summer you can access miles of hiking and biking trails at the base of the mountain.

Although the scenic surroundings are the main draw to Stowe, the town itself is also a fun place to spend the day. Founded over 200 years ago, the city offers up some historic architecture along with charming boutiques, restaurants, craft breweries, and spas.

2. Waterbury

burlington vermont day trip

Ice cream lovers visiting Burlington will find the best day trip in the nearby city of Waterbury, home to the famous Ben & Jerry’s ice cream factory . There’s also a gift shop inside the factory if you’d like an ice-cream-themed souvenir.

Although Ben & Jerry’s is the main draw to Waterbury, there are plenty of other activities to keep you busy once you finish up at the factory. This charming town also boasts some historic architecture, small shops, and craft breweries. Spend some time hiking through Camel’s Hump State Park , taking a dip at Little River State Park , or wandering through the Village Historic District .

The drive to Waterbury is a short 30-minutes away, and you’ll be at the crossroads of the Scenic Route 100 Byway – which definitely warrants a detour, especially in the autumn when the fall foliage is at its peak. No matter which direction you head, you’ll find lots of places to stop off at – including scenic overlooks, cafes, distilleries, and cideries.

Although much of Vermont could be considered an outdoor playground, Burke is one of the best day trips from Burlington for those looking for some fun in nature.

The town is located in the Northeast Kingdom at the base of Burke Mountain , a low-key ski resort that turns into a mountain biking mecca in the summer. For more biking and some hiking you could also check out the Kingdom Trails starting just across the street from the base of the mountain.

Those looking for a more relaxed activity during their time in Burke can learn about the maple syrup making process in the spring, or admire the beautiful fall foliage in the autumn.

12. Hartford

burlington vermont day trip

Comprised of five unincorporated villages on the confluence of the Connecticut and White Rivers, the city of Hartford is one of the best day trips from Burlington. One day should be enough to visit all five villages, and you’ll get a completely different vibe from each.

The most popular is the villiage of Quechee . The state park with the same name is the best place to view the iconic Quechee Gorge , and has some great hiking and fishing opportunities. You could also visit the Simon Pearce Glass Factory, which is somewhat precariously perched over the Ottauquechee River , or enjoy a meal at one of the farm-to-table restaurants in town.

burlington vermont day trip

Dorest is a beautiful small town in southeast Vermont with a rich history and a vibrant culture. Named after the verdant county in Englad, Dorset is a classic New England town that has been around since 1761.

The town is most famous for the Cephas Kent’s Inn , a place where discussions were held about Vermont’s statehood. Unfortunately, the tavern does not exist today, but there’s a historical marker in the place where it once stood.

Although the inn is no longer, Dorset does have a few businesses that have been running continuously since the town’s inception – including the Dorset Union Store and the iconic Dorset Inn .

The historic downtown area is filled with shops selling locally made handicrafts, and you’ll find a farmer’s market running on Sundays throughout the year.

If you’re visiting during the summer, you can take a dip at the local swimming hole, which also happens to be the oldest marble quarry in the country.

14. Bennington

burlington vermont day trip

Bennington is a quintessential small town of Vermont, located nearly 3 hours south of Burlington . Although this might be a bit far for a day trip, if you hit the road early enough you’ll be glad you made the journey.

Bennington is home to a lovely downtown area filled with tree-lined streets, cozy cafes, and small shops selling wares from local artists.

Visit largest man-made structure in Vermont, The Bennington Battle Monument , and get a glimpse of the massive stone obelisk commemorating the Battle of Bennington – which took place during the American Revolutionary War.

For a dose of nature and great views, head up the steep 3.6-mile Harmon Hill Trail, or take the slightly less taxing trail around Lake Shaftsbury.

15. Saratoga Springs, New York

burlington vermont day trip

Our list of the 15 best day trips from Burlington wouldn’t be complete without the town of Saratoga Springs, located across the border in the neighboring state of New York.

History buffs will love learning about the battle of Saratoga, while those looking to relax can head to the Saratoga Spa State Park for a healing soak in the mineral springs.

This city is also known for horse racing, and if you’re lucky, you can plan your trip around one of these famous events. Otherwise, you can head to the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame to see the paintings and trophies of the star racers.

Saratoga is one of the bigger cities on our list, and you can enjoy activities here that you won’t find in some of the smaller towns around Vermont. You can check out a ballet, jazz, or orchestra performance, and then hit up one of the city’s delectable restaurants or enjoy a few drinks at one of the local pubs. If you decide to stay the night, you’ll find plenty of hotels around town.

Ben & Jerry's ice cream is still produced in Vermont – and you could see the sweet stuff churn at a Waterbury factory that's about 30 miles from downtown Burlington. The 30-minute Factory Experience tours are an inside look at the company's manufacturing process and history, starting with its 1978 founding in Burlington. (Keep in mind manufacturing schedules and tour schedules are separate, so you may not get to see ice cream production.) You get a free sample of ice cream, too; recent visitors praised generous sample sizes and the option to choose vegan and dairy-free alternatives.

After the tour, visit the Scoop Shop for cones and sundaes; but, be prepared for a long wait, according to past travelers. Then, pay your respects to discontinued flavors at the Flavor Graveyard. Revolutionary War veteran and Vermont founding father Ethan Allen built a small home in Burlington 1787, and that local history is preserved at the city's Ethan Allen Homestead Museum. The restored Allen House is just one part of the broader museum grounds, however. The main museum building is a converted 1930s barn that contains a gift shop, permanent installations and a recreated 18th-century tavern. Also within the main museum are exhibits on Abenaki culture and the Green Mountain Boys militia that Allen led. A monthly lecture series covers Vermont and early American history, its topics ranging from gardening to artisanal crafts to Abenaki culture. And in case you were wondering, Vermont-founded furniture brand Ethan Allen was named in honor of the American legend.

Recent visitors to the homestead said they spent more time exploring the grounds than the museum itself. The grounds feature a recreated 18th-century garden, recreated Abenaki village Negôni Alnôbaakik and 4 miles of walking trails through wetlands and riverside habitat.

Agricultural traditions remain a point of pride in mostly rural Vermont, where seasonal farmers' markets double as social hubs – a place to stock up on fresh produce, maple syrup and all the week's gossip. The Burlington Farmers Market is the state's most substantial event, with dozens of vendors selling agricultural products, prepared food and crafts. Bring a shopping bag to stock up on gifts and souvenirs: Easy-to-pack highlights include maple candies, fruit preserves, dried Vermont cranberries, handmade jewelry and more.

While the market runs year-round, the Saturday markets that run from mid-May through the end of October are by far the biggest, drawing crowds energized by summer produce, more vendors and an open-air venue on Pine Street. Aside from a limited number of accessible spaces reserved for visitors, there is no parking on-site; parking can be found on South Champlain Street, Howard Street and a few lots nearby. Winter markets are every other Saturday from mid-November through late April. The winter market location tends to change, so plan to check the website before departure.

Shows at the Vermont Comedy Club have an intimate feel, even when events are sold out; the showroom seats no more than 140 people at cabaret tables.

In addition to stand-up, the Vermont Comedy Club schedule includes drag brunches, karaoke, trivia, improv and showcases by students attending the club's improv classes. Recent travelers called out the great atmosphere and friendly. Seating is first-come, first-serve and is all on one level, so visibility can be a bit limited from the back.

Burlington, VT is located in the northwest part of Vermont, along the eastern shore of Lake Champlain. And far north it is! In fact, it is only 45 miles from the Canadian border.

Burlington may be tucked away in Vermont, but it is still accessible from the rest of New England and parts elsewhere. For instance, is roughly a 4 hour drive from Boston to Burlington. Home to Burlington International Airport (BTV), this makes it easy to catch a flight into Burlington as well.

Is Burlington, Vermont worth visiting?

Yes, I think Burlington Vermont is absolutely worth visiting, for many reasons, but especially due to its unique artsy vibes, local food scene, and natural beauty.

And it packs all of this into a small size, which means you can experience A LOT of Burlington in even just a weekend visit.

Burlington’s modest size is part of its charm. You’ll never feel like you’re in a big urban center when you’re here; in fact, nature is so prevalent here in the Green Mountain state that visitors are likely to think of Burlington as feeling surprisingly rural.

In fact, just 10 minutes from downtown Burlington can bring you to sprawling fields and farmland, with ridges of the Green Mountains in easy reach for hiking and skiing.

Best Things to Do in Burlington VT

1. explore church street marketplace.

an image of an empty shopping street on a sunny day. colorful banners cross over the blue sky and a long bricked walkway leads to a distant church

You can’t visit Burlington, Vermont, without hearing about Church Street. Officially called Church Street Marketplace, this well-known thoroughfare is a bricked, pedestrian-only walkway that stretches from the church at the top of Church Street and down for half a dozen blocks.

It’s the center of downtown Burlington , with numerous streets branching off of it filled with cafes, bookstores, shops, and more.

This is where to go if you’re looking for the best Burlington VT shopping, especially if you’re looking to shop locally. From top to bottom, Church Street boasts eclectic boutiques and stores of all kinds. The 4 blocks between Main St and Pearl St comprise what is officially known as the Church Street Marketplace.

When you’re not shopping, this is a perfect spot for people watching. In fact, you might catch a glimpse now and then of beloved local (and national meme sensation) Bernie Sanders!

Church Street Marketplace is crowded nearly every day with locals, visitors, and street entertainers.

Pause on a bench for a few moments to listen to a local busker playing their tunes. Watch as a bevy of college students strolls by. And keep your eyes out for the quirkier characters you’re likely to come across, too. Burlington is a very funky city.

Dining al fresco is a pleasure on Church Street and you have dozens of places to choose from for your meal. Is it breakfast time? Consider one of these fantastic Burlington brunch spots.

Traveling with a dog? Burlington is very dog friendly, so your canine friend can dine with you when you sit on the patio in many spots. Just a part of that Burlington VT charm!

At night, Church Street is as lively as ever, with lots of bars and nightlife spots to keep you entertained. I went out on Church Street a lot when I lived in Burlington in my 20s and had so many fun and memorable nights.

I have a list of some of the best bars and breweries I frequented when I was a Burlington local.

Local Tip: Usually from Thursday-Saturday, several amazing food carts set up along Church Street and you should definitely stop at Church Street Cheesesteaks. I literally dream about these delicious cheese steaks: best I’ve ever had.

2. Walk along the Lake Champlain Waterfront

One of the most stunning tourist attractions Burlington VT has is Lake Champlain itself.

When you drive in from the east into downtown (which you will if coming from the direction of the airport) you will suddenly see the city of Burlington with the glistening expanse of the lake behind it. It’s a spectacular sight to see and one that never fails to make me smile.

a sidewalk next to a stand of spring blooming trees. a small bit of a lake can be seen in the distance. a sunny day

There are many activities to check out on, in, and near Burlington’s Lake Champlain, but the easiest way to access it and take in its views is along the waterfront.

The Burlington Waterfront Park is situated along the shores of Lake Champlain, at the bottom of College Street and stretching up to the north past Pearl Street. It’s pretty easy walking distance from Church St. and the main portions of downtown.

I love the waterfront just for walking, relaxing on the grass, or sitting in one of their many bench swings.

The boardwalk runs along the lake’s edge and the views here are absolutely gorgeous, with the lake in front of you and the Adirondack mountains framing it from behind. Catch a Vermont sunset here, I promise it will be worth it.

3. Get out on the water with a cruise on Lake Champlain

two tiny white sailboats are on a still blue lake surrounded by green trees

Don’t just look at the lake, get out on it! There are many ways to make the most of Lake Champlain.

There are ferries and scenic cruises of Lake Champlain that depart directly from the Burlington waterfront. One of the most well-known vessels for a cruise on Lake Champlain is the Spirit of Ethan Allen , offering daily sailings as well as special events.

Taking a sailboat excursion is also a wonderful option. You can hop onboard a schooner and set sail on the lake with an accomplished crew. Choose a private sunset cruise if you’re looking for romantic things to do in Burlington, VT!

4. Have a Burlington beach day

a sandy beach sits next to a glistening lake in vermont. a few seagulls on the sand and a sailboat in the distance

When it comes to swimming in Lake Champlain, the downtown waterfront is not the spot for this. For those wanting to take a dip in the cool lake waters, head to one of the nearby beaches. These are all within driving distance from downtown, or can be accessed via the Burlington Bike Path that stretches along the shoreline.

Recommended Burlington beaches include North Beach, Leddy Beach, and beaches in Oakledge Park, where there are also walking paths and other recreation options.

North Beach is the largest in the area. It has seasonal lifeguards as well as paddleboard and kayak rentals. Definitely a fun place to spend a day in Burlington VT.

5. Go brewery hopping

a hand holding a dark amber ale close to the camera, an out of focuse brewery restaurant is behind

One of the absolute best Burlington activities is to sample our local craft brews. This is a city that LOVES beer and makes it incredibly well!

There are tons of breweries in the city and beer fans will want to try them all. You can even sign up for a guided Burlington VT craft brewery tour.

City Brew Tours offers multiple options, including the Original Brew Tour which takes you on a deep dive of the BTV beer scene and gets you sampling up to 16 beers. There’s also pizza!

Prefer to DIY your local brewery hopping experience? You can read this post on my favorite Burlington, Vermont breweries for more detailed ideas: Best Burlington VT Breweries & Bars.

PS: Always drink responsibly and stay safe. I recommend walking between these downtown breweries or utilizing a ride service such as Uber. Or, better yet, take one of the City Brew Tours mentioned above and let them do the driving for you!

6. Explore the artsy South End

A placard reading \

When in Burlington, don’t limit your visit to Church Street and the main places downtown. There are several other cool parts of town that are worth your time. One of the most compelling is the South End, heading down Pine Street.

Once a bland industrial stretch of the city, the South End is now an art-filled hub of restaurants, thriving businesses, and more.

There are several breweries down here and a number of art galleries highlighting the talented local artists. Check out this site for up-to-date listings of where to find open galleries, art events, and more in South End Burlington VT. You’ll definitely want to put The Soda Plant on your Burlington Bucket list. Originally a ginger ale bottling plant, this space is now an epic small business hub, featuring over 40 artists, makers, and more. This is a fantastic place to explore a real part of Burlington local life.

As with any eccentric part of a city, there are also some oddities in the South End. Look for the world’s tallest file cabinet (more on that below) and the Burlington Earth Clock .

ancient looking standing stones on the shores of lake champlain at sunset

I also highly suggest making time to visit ArtsRiot . This renovated warehouse is a lively music venue and restaurant. In the summer months, they host Truck Stop, which is a gathering of local food trucks featuring live music and more and is a super fun thing to do in Burlington.

7. Pay a visit to ECHO, Leahy Center for Lake Champlain

Without a doubt, one of the top Burlington attractions is the ECHO Center. This is a fun science and nature museum located right on the Burlington waterfront.

Kids especially love this aquarium and museum with its interactive exhibits, a life-size recreation of an 1876 Lake Champlain shipwreck, plus fun educational films screened in the 3D theater!

This cool venue is also host to unique events throughout the year. I once attended an epic Halloween party here!

8. Admire the cool street art

purple wall mural that says you are loved

Burlington has always been a special place when it comes to art and culture. The art scene is thriving on all levels, and street art is no exception.

While spending time in Burlington, you can’t help but spot some of the cool murals around downtown. These range from Vermont-themed to inspirational to simply unique. Here are a few not to miss:

9. Explore history at the Shelburne Museum

a woman and a young boy walk hand in hand towards a historic ship in an outdoor museum

The Shelburne Museum combines history, art, and more across sprawling, beautiful grounds. It’s definitely worth a visit, especially if you’re looking for things to do in Burlington with kids. The hands-on exhibits can be great fun.

The Shelburne Museum features an incredible collection of American folk art, decorative arts, and fine art. You can explore the various buildings and galleries to view these collections, seeing everyday items of Americana including paintings, sculptures, quilts, and more.

The museum also consists of numerous historic buildings that have been relocated to the site, such as a covered bridge, a lighthouse, and even a fully furnished 1950s house. These buildings provide a unique glimpse into American history and architecture.

One of the coolest historic landmarks “docked” here is the 1906 steamship Ticonderoga. Touring it is a fascinating look into life in the 1920’s, when the ship toured passengers around Lake Champlain in style. The Ticonderoga is a National Historic Landmark and is the last walking beam side-wheel passenger steamer in existence.

Local tip: While visiting Shelburne, you can make a stop nearby to tour the Vermont Teddy Bear Factory or grab a farm tour at Shelburne Farms.

10. Cycle, walk, or blade along the Burlington Bike Path

a paved bike path surrounded by bright green trees

One of my favorite things to do around Burlington, VT is to spend time traveling the bike path. The bike path is situated directly next to Lake Champlain and runs for 7.6 miles along its edge.

On any given day, you’ll see many Vermonters and visitors alike enjoying this gorgeous path. You can pick up the path right at the Burlington waterfront, or further south at Oakledge Park, where it begins.

Fans of biking may want to venture even further on the Island Line Trail, which combines the Burlington Bike Path with several additional miles of trail, literally bringing you out into the Champlain Islands in the center of the lake. It’s a breathtaking journey and a unique experience.

Need to rent bikes? Local Motion has a rental office right along the bike path at the waterfront, and they also offer a one-of-a-kind bike ferry that can bring you and your wheels from the Island Line Trail onto South Hero Island.

11. Enjoy a few scoops of Vermont’s Finest – Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream!

You’ve probably had Ben & Jerry’s before, but have you had it in the place where it originated? Ben & Jerry’s is the most delicious ice cream, and they have a shop offering scoops, shakes, and much more right on Church Street. The shop is super cute and colorful and (bonus) it smells incredible inside!

a rainy scene in downtown burlington.wet brick pavement in front of a ben and jerry's ice cream shop

Once you’ve got your Half Baked or your Cherry Garcia, head a few blocks over to the corner of College Street and St. Paul Street (near City Hall Park) and see where the OG Ben & Jerry’s was located. It’s now a gravel parking lot, but there’s a plaque showcasing where Ben & Jerry’s got their start in the 1970’s.

a woman and a man smiling and holding ice cream cones

If you’re a real ice cream fan, you might consider a day trip to Waterbury, where the official Ben & Jerry’s factory is located. Take a factory tour, enjoy a free scoop of your favorite flavor, and pay your respects at the flavor graveyard, where failed creations find eternal rest.

12. Snap a selfie with the World’s Tallest Filing Cabinet

an extremely tall file cabinet rises into a cloudy sky

File this one away (see what I did there) as one of the more quirky, unique things to do in Burlington!

Made up of 38 drawers stacked on top of each other, it’s a little unclear if this is actually the World’s Tallest Filing Cabinet , but it’s definitely a unique Burlington thing to do if you’re into obscure public art pieces!

13. Attend a show at the Vermont Comedy Club

You’re sure to be in for some laughs at the Vermont Comedy Club , a relatively new venue that hosts some amazing big-name acts.

If you’re not keen on comedy, check out the Flynn Center for the Performing Arts, just down the street, which offers a variety of entertainment from touring theatre productions to symphonies. The local community theatre company, Lyric , puts on great shows.

14. Visit the Fleming Museum of Art at the University of Vermont

Burlington is a terrific college town. Why not take advantage of that during your visit? Having the University of Vermont in town (UVM) brings additional cultural and educational opportunities to all.

Consider stopping by the Fleming Museum of Art . This museum, opened in 1931, holds a collection of 24,000 objects from cultures across the world and hosts several special exhibitions throughout the year.

15. Explore nearby hiking trails

A green field of grass with mountains in the distance in Burlington Vermont

Burlington is blessed by its proximity to the mountains. (Seriously, a town nestled between mountains and a giant lake? What’s not to love?) So avid hikers will adore this area.

If you want to go hiking near Burlington, VT, you have a range of options, as there are many awesome hikes in the Burlington area.

For a quick hike with a rewarding view of the lake, consider Mt. Philo. This hike is located in Charlotte, VT, a 30-minute drive south of Burlington. The trail up Mt. Philo is rated as easy-moderate, and is a 1.9 mi loop.

Camel’s Hump is home to some of the most popular hikes in all of Vermont , especially for the experienced hiker. Tackling this iconic Vermont peak is a fairly lengthy endeavor. The Burrows Trail route to the summit is 5 miles in length and is expected to take between 3-5 hours to hike round trip. Still, you’ll find amazing views at the end of this awesome accomplishment.

a wooden bridge along a hiking path in autumn woods

Need more hiking ideas? Consider a day trip to Stowe. While Stowe is a distance away (45 minutes-1 hour) it is 100% worth a visit if you have time during your trip to Vermont. Stowe is classic New England, with a white-steepled church, magical mountain views, and a quaint Main Street.

And of course, Stowe offers great hiking. Trails to consider include Sterling Pond, Mount Mansfield, and Stowe Pinnacle.

16. Experience a night out in Downtown Burlington

Downtown Burlington has some pretty great nightlife. While this is no Miami, there are a number of fun bars and pubs that offer a low-key, Vermont vibe. We’re pretty sure you’ll find something you enjoy.

The Three Needs is a hip, rustic bar with plenty of seating, pool tables, and good beers on tap.

Drink is a smaller venue that offers cocktails and board games.

At the Archives , you can sip on craft brews or cocktails while playing vintage arcade cames.

The Gryphon is a classy joint and has delicious food on top of its solid cocktail options. During weeknights they often have drink specials.

burlington vermont's church street lit up at night. a distant brick church at the end of an empty brick shopping boulevard

Want to grab some live music? Nectar’s always has something playing, or you can grab an Uber to Higher Ground in South Burlington, where most major musical acts play when they come to town.

For dancing until the wee hours, check out Metronome, a nightclub above Nectar’s, as well as the Half Lounge, a tiny, speakeasy-like place right off Church Street.

The Whiskey Room, attached to the Irish pub Ri Ra is a nice surprise in Burlington. This austere whiskey lounge feels like it fell right out of Britain.

17. Eat a Vermont maple creemee & other local Vermont specialties

Vermont is all about the food. Cheese, chocolate, ice cream, maple syrup….. You are going to want to try all of the local VT specialties while you’re here.

Not to mention the vast number of farm-to-table restaurants. You’ll be eating local here and you’ll be eating delicious.

In Burlington, The Skinny Pancake is a great restaurant worth visiting. They are famous for their sweet and savory crepes (aka ‘skinny pancakes’), and have a serious emphasis on sourcing locally.

Lake Champlain Chocolates on Church Street is also calling your name. Amazing chocolate made right here in VT? Say no more.

a purple soft serve ice cream cone is held in focus while a cloudy day on a lake is blurred behind

The Vermont creemee will be a staple of your visit, especially if visiting Vermont in the summer.

Creemee is just our cute name for soft serve ice cream. Maple creemees, especially are out of this world. You can find them lots of places, often swirled with raspberry.

They sell some right at the waterfront, by the way. Go get ’em!

a sign reads today maple cremee in front of a small food shack

Our famous Cabot cheddar is easy to find in nearly every Burlington restaurant or shop. But you can patronize an entire Cabot cheese shop up in Waterbury if you’re super into le fromage.

While poutine isn’t a traditional Vermont food (it’s French Canadian), you can get it here in many places.

Poutine consists of french fries covered in gravy and cheese curds. It might sound odd at first, but it is insanely delicious.

18. Sip a maple latte

two lattes sit on a counter in red and pink mugs, beautiful latte art on top

I always recommend trying out the local coffee shops. Burlington is a town with a terrific coffee scene, and you’ll find almost every shop is busy every day. And while you may already have your preferred brew, may I suggest getting a maple latte ? This is my absolute favorite espresso drink, and when made with 100% pure Vermont Maple Syrup, it’s a transcendent experience!

A few suggested spots for epic maple lattes in Burlington:

  • Onyx Tonics
  • Vivid Coffee
  • Brio Coffeeworks

While Burlington has an abundance of great coffee shops, you can read about ALL my favorites in this post: Best Burlington Vermont Coffee Shops

19. Catch a sunset over Lake Champlain

A sunset over Lake Champlain in Burlington, Vermont

Every evening, the sun goes down in the west, and from Burlington, the views over Lake Champlain and the distant Adirondacks are phenomenal.

Make it a priority to catch at least one lakeside sunset during your visit to Burlington. A cloudy evening is usually best, providing plenty of dimension for the dusky sky.

Are you looking for more free and cheap things to do in Burlington? I’ve got a whole post about the best free things to do in Burlington here .

20. Explore the Ethan Allen Homestead Museum

For those interested in learning more about the history of the area, a trip to the Ethan Allen Homestead Museum should be on your Burlington itinerary. Open May through October, this well-kept historic site will transport you back in time, with guided tours of the beautifully restored 235-year old Allen family home as well as opportunities to explore the tranquil gardens along the Winooski River. During your visit to the museum you’ll learn about the life and times of Ethan Allen and other early Vermont settlers, giving you a better understanding of the state’s history. There are also several Native American exhibits onsite created by Alnôbaiwi , including an Abenaki cultural exhibit and a recreated village and ceremonial site.

Things to Do in Burlington VT in Fall

Oh, Burlington in the fall. It’s one of the best times of the year and our foliage is out of this world. I recommend all of the main things to do in Burlington Vermont that I’ve listed above, plus all these special fall activities and festivals.

21. Go apple picking

Apple picking is a blast and definitely one of the top things to do in Vermont in the fall .

Bring home a basket of fresh Vermont apples that you can use to make a pie, jam, or your favorite apple-based item. Take a look at this list of Vermont apple orchards to see where you can go apple picking near Burlington.

Be sure to try a cider donut, too! This is a good one to add to the list of Burlington Vermont family activities.

22. Get cozy (and fed) inside American Flatbread

There are lots of yummy places to eat in Burlington VT, but for a cozy fall meal, you can’t go wrong with American Flatbread . This is a cozy pizza restaurant with wood-fired flatbread that is absolutely delicious. Sit near the fire if you want to keep warm. Or, keep cool with one of their amazing beers.

23. Attend the South End Art Hop

Every September the South End is home to the Art Hop , a huge open-gallery event that attracts nearly 30,000 visitors each year and is one of the top Burlington VT events. Visit artists in their studios, attend live demos, fashion shows, and so much more during this annual multi-day event.

Things to Do in Burlington VT in Winter

Vermont doesn’t slow down in the winter ; in fact, we’re busier than ever! Some of these are essential winter experiences you won’t want to miss.

a figure walks with a red umbrella along a very snowy road

24. Catch the Penguin Plunge

A Burlington VT winter is a cold one. Are you amazed to discover that some people jump into the frigid waters of Lake Champlain every year? The Penguin Plunge is an event designed to raise money for Special Olympics Vermont. It’s definitely something to catch if you’re around for a Burlington Vermont winter.

an icy lake at sunset with an illuminated lighthouse

25. Go skiing in the Green Mountains

Winter sports abound throughout the state. We’re definitely known for our skiing and snowboarding. From Burlington, there are many mountain options available to you. Bolton Valley is one of the closest, but Stowe and Smuggler’s Notch are popular spots a bit further afield; ski resorts are always at the top of the list of Burlington VT winter activities.

26. Go holiday shopping on Church Street

an image of a nearly empty street covered in snow, shops line the sides

Church Street looks especially beautiful during Christmastime. The city puts up tons of twinkling lights along the walkway, and it illuminates the space with joy. It makes holiday shopping extra fun, particularly when the snow begins to fall. Visiting after the holidays? Don’t worry; the lights stay up all winter long.

Things to Do in Burlington VT in Summer

a summery photo of people enjoying ice cream in front of a creemee stand

Summer is my personal favorite time of year in Vermont . It is SO. GREEN.  June is usually a spectacular month with perfect weather, but July and August offer traditional summer heat. What will you do in the summer in Burlington? Here are some ideas:

27. Try stand up paddleboarding on the lake

With its fairly calm waters, Lake Champlain is a perfect place to try stand up paddleboarding. Several different businesses offer paddleboard rentals or lessons. WND&WVS has a range of opportunities for guided tours and lessons at reasonable prices. Check them out for some Burlington Vermont summer fun at the lake!

28. Enjoy a picnic on the waterfront

a man and woman enjoying a summer picnic on lake champlain, Vermont, with flowers and wine

Head down to Oakledge Park or another waterfront spot and bring snacks. I love a lakeside picnic, especially during the gorgeous summer months. If you want to keep it local and Vermonty, do your shopping downtown at the City Market Onion River Co-op . This grocery store has a great selection of cheese, produce, wine, beer, and so much more, with lots of locally-sourced and locally-made items.

29. Grab local produce at the Burlington Farmers Market

a table at a farmers market showing fresh flowers. a hand painted sign for pure maple syrup on the ground in front

It’s always so exciting when the Burlington Farmers Market starts up again each summer.

A Vermont farmers market is a must-do when it comes to Burlington VT activities. This is a big market in the South End (at 345 Pine Street) with local produce, flowers, baked goods, crafts, art, hot food, and coffee, all by local artisans and makers, of course!

Best of all, the Burlington Farmers Market is dog-friendly, and everyone brings their adorable pups to the market with them. For me, that’s a major draw, and every time I visit the Farmers Market I make new friends (human and canine!)

30. Enjoy a farm-to-table dinner

Speaking of farmers, we Vermonters take massive pride in the work of our local farms. Local food and farm-to-table dining are big deal here in Burlington and throughout Vermont.

So this guide to Burlington Vermont things to do would not be complete without a recommendation for a delicious meal at one of our local gems. A few restaurants to consider (all of whom create divine dishes and prioritize farm fresh local products) include:

  • Hen of the Wood
  • Juniper (inside Hotel Vermont)
  • The Farmhouse Tap & Grill

Things to Do in Burlington VT in Spring

Spring can be an underrated time in Burlington. Unfortunately, it can still be a bit chilly or even rainy, but if you plan ahead, you can have a lovely stay and avoid the crowds of the high season, which is always a nice bonus. (PS: check out all the great places to enjoy spring in New England !)

31. Sample some fresh maple syrup

bottles of Vermont maple syrup on a country store shelf

Spring is when the maple sap starts to “run” which means sugar shacks start heating up and producing our famous Vermont maple syrup.

If you’re looking for things to do in Burlington VT in March, you can try fresh syrup and a Vermont specialty: sugar on snow (a chewy maple candy created by pouring hot syrup onto a chilly packed snowbank). In March and April, you might catch one of New England’s maple festivals in action as well.

🍁Want to learn more about sugar shacks? Check out my full guide on 9 of the best spots to have this magical Vermont maple syrup experience.

32.Visit Shelburne Farms

Enjoy the flory of springtime to its fullest by visiting a working farm. Take a wagon tour of Shelburne Farms and interact with the animals in the Children’s Farmyard. You might even see some baby animals at this time of year; this is definitely one of the top things to do in Burlington VT with kids.

33. Take a guided food tour

Did I mention how great our Vermont foods are? To get a serious cuisine experience, I recommend taking a guided food tour of Burlington. The Edible History walking tour is one of the most well-known and popular options, which connects you with Burlington’s early ethnic groups and their culinary history.

Best Places to Stay in Burlington

As you plan on where to stay in Burlington VT you’ll want to consider choosing the best location. I’ve got a quick rundown below, but there are also more options in my full article: Where to Stay in Burlington, VT

Getting around Burlington, Vermont is fairly simple. The downtown is largely walkable, and there are a number of hotels to choose from in the downtown area. If you choose to be further from downtown, you may need to have a car at your disposal or call for an Uber or Lyft.

All of the Burlington VT lodging I recommend is within walking distance (or very short Uber ride) to downtown.

You can also check out some of the top vacation rentals in Burlington Vermont, too: Best Airbnbs in Burlington VT to Book ASAP

Made INN Vermont B&B

Do you love unique, hip accommodation? You will love Made Inn Vermont , an urban chic Burlington bed & breakfast with 4 distinct rooms.

These Burlington VT accommodations are cozy, homey, and beautifully designed. It’s like a boutique hotel in a massive Victorian mansion.

One of the best parts of staying here may be its location. While it’s not right in the heart of downtown, it’s just a short walk away. Located up on South Willard Street, in the Hills section of Burlington, Made INN Vermont is tucked on a historic street next to other impressive homes. This is a quiet spot just up the hill from downtown, so you get the experience of being in a local neighborhood while remaining within convenient reach of all of the major Burlington attractions.

Hotel Vermont

Would you prefer to be in the heart of things? Hotel Vermont is a clean, centrally-located independent hotel that is very popular with visitors. You’ll be staying super close to both Church Street and Lake Champlain at this property, and you’ve got an onsite restaurant, a swimming pool, and free use of bicycles.

Hilton Garden Inn Burlington Downtown

One of the best hotels in Burlington, VT for a great value is the Hilton Garden Inn . This hotel may have the best location so far. It’s just a hop, skip, and jump from Church Street, and very close to City Hall Park, American Flatbread, and one of my favorite coffee shops, Onyx Tonics. This is the ideal accommodation choice for a person who wants to go out in the evenings downtown.

While you’ll be slightly farther from the lake at this hotel, some rooms do offer partial lake views. And either way, you’ll be in a comfortable, well-appointed guest room.

Are you ready to explore Burlington? I hope I’ve given you enough ideas for what to do in Burlington, Vermont to plan your trip.

You can absolutely skip straight to the maple creemee!

Vermont is high on my list! I’d love to do a Burlington’s craft beer scene tour!

I need to go back and do a tour

We visited Burlington and didn’t know there was flying monkeys around town! Although we did visit the chocolate maker to learn about the process. Well my wife loved Vermont and has been wanting to go back and I am just odd enough to revisit a place to get pictures of flying monkeys!

That made me laugh!

There certainly isn’t a shortage of adventurous things to do in Burlington, Vermont. I think I’d love to go an an edible history tour, hike Mt Philo after that, and finally buy a flannel shirt to sleep in after such an eventful day.

I love practical souvenirs

We are thinking about planning a trip to Vermont in the fall. So this is a good list to starting planning from. Hubby would want to start with the craft breweries and the chocolate shop. I will be looking for walks and bike routes. Although we will take the car to Mt Philo for a panoramic view. Such a great list to plan from.

Thank you! It will be beautiful in the Fall

Loved Vermont. We didn’t get to Burlington, just Montpelier, Stowe and Barre. I want to see that tallest filing cabinet in the world and Ethan Allen’s homestead!

The filing cabinet is just sitting in a vacant lot all by itself… so odd

That is quite a list! Burlington Vermont sounds really nice. Waterfront yoga and SUP sounds great! Definitely my kind of place.

8 Things to Do in One Day in Burlington, VT

During our Lake Champlain vacation , we took a day trip to Burlington, VT! If you’re staying in Plattsburgh, NY like we did, it’s only a little over an hour drive (including the ferry ride across the lake), so it’s an easy day trip. There’s lots to see and do in the city, but if you’re just doing a short trip, here are 8 things you can do in one day in Burlington, VT!

One Day in Burlington, VT

8 Things to Do in One Day in Burlington, VT

Visit the Ethan Allen homestead

Ethan Allen fought in the Revolutionary War, and you can visit his homestead right outside Burlington. He was instrumental in helping Vermont become an independent state from New York and known for helping recapture Fort Ticonderoga. Allen built his homestead in 1787 after the war ended to become a farmer, but he died a few years after the house was built.

We didn’t take a tour because we had our husky Annika, but the windows of the house are open for you to look into all the rooms and you can tour the pretty garden.

You can also walk around the land, which I highly recommend. The homestead is on the Winooski River, and the views are beautiful! The land is dog friendly, and we walked around for about an hour taking in the sights.

Grab some food at Shelburne Farms

Also right outside Burlington is Shelburne Farms where you can walk around and buy some delicious food!

The walking trail is not dog friendly so we didn’t go for a stroll, but we did pick up some local food. We got maple syrup, cheese, ice cream, and some produce, and everything was soooo good.

And right in the same area is Shelburne Museum ! It was temporarily closed, but it’s an outdoor museum with gardens, historic architecture, and art exhibitions.

See the World’s Tallest Filing Cabinet

Ok, this one is pretty random! When I was looking up things to do in one day in Burlington, VT, a few websites mentioned the World’s Tallest Filing Cabinet . I like seeing random things (like the Mustard Museum in Wisconsin!), so we stopped to see it.

It was built in 2002 by a local artist, and it’s basically just filing cabinets stacked on top of each other. It wasn’t the most exciting thing to see and they were working on it while we were there, but it’s only a 5 minute visit so might as well stop by and see it!

Get chocolate (and ice cream) at Lake Champlain Chocolates

If you like chocolate, you need to visit Lake Champlain Chocolates ! There are a few locations (including one in downtown Burlington), and at the flagship store, you can go on a factory tour and taste samples. Who doesn’t love chocolate samples?

We loaded up on chocolate for ourselves and for gifts, and we also got some ice cream cones, which were also delicious!

Walk around downtown Burlington

Speaking of downtown Burlington, you need to visit and walk around! Church Street is a walking street with lots of shops and restaurants, including Ben and Jerry’s and Lake Champlain Chocolates. If you walk around past Church Street, you can see some murals and beautiful historic architecture around the city.

Relax on Lake Champlain

Right along downtown Burlington is Lake Champlain! There’s a park area by the docks, so you can walk around and relax by the lake for beautiful views. There are also some stacks of rocks along the lake, and I couldn’t find what they’re there for but still cool to see. If you want to see more of the lake, there are some cruise options to go around the lake.

We didn’t get a chance to go, but the Skinny Pancake is right near the waterfront and came highly recommended if you’re interested in getting some crepes!

Get some coffee

Burlington has some great coffee shops and roasteries if you need a caffeine boost! We got some coffee at Speeder and Earl’s , and I loved how fun and retro it is. You can also buy coffee beans or grounds for a Vermont souvenir!

Speeder and Earl's coffee shop in Burlington. VT

Visit a brewery

Along with coffee shops, Burlington also has a lot of great breweries . It actually took us a lot of time and research to pick one to visit! We’re big fans of Magic Hat so we wanted to go there, but the brewery has been closed for a while. We settled on Zero Gravity because their beer and food sounded good, and they had outdoor seating so we could bring Annika.

Everything we had was delicious, and we also bought some cans of beer to bring home with us!

Fried chicken sandwich and French fries and beer at Zero Gravity brewery

Those are my top recommendations for things to do in Burlington, VT! We enjoyed visiting and would love to go back for a longer stay. If you’re staying in Burlington for longer, New England with Love has some great recommendations for other things to do, and I also recommend taking a day trip to Plattsburgh, NY !

Love the pictures We live in Florida and we’re trying to find some special destinations to visit. We love small towns and we love to walk. Hopefully in cold in October won’t be too unbearable for us.

I hope you have a fun time!

So many great things to do in one day! Once there’s ice cream and chocolate, it’s always a good place to be. Hope your doggie enjoy all that farmland.

So true, great ice cream really makes a vacation!

Burlington looks like a lovely place to visit in the Spring or Summer. I would love to check out Ethan Allen’s home.

It was one of my favorite spots! 🙂

What a cute little town! I love small towns like these, especially when they’re on the water! And the filing cabinet is both odd and a great, artistic way to recycle!

Small towns on the water are the best! 🙂

Great blog post! I have visited the beautiful Shelburne Farms years ago and taken a ride on a trolley to the main barn, viewing green pastures dotted with cows. It’s a great day out watching the cheese making process too. Your blog has brought back my memories and I want to visit this part of Vermont again. 🙂

Thank you! 🙂 I really need to spend more time at Shelburne Farms!!

Are you planning a weekend in Burlington, Vermont?

While Burlington is Vermont’s most populated city (about 45,000 people), it’s small compared to places like Boston and New York. It’s the perfect place to plan a relaxing weekend getaway filled with good food and stunning nature.

I spent a girls’ weekend in Burlington and have lots of recommendations on the best things to do with a few days in this part of the Green Mountain State. In this post, I’ve provided both a two-day and three-day itinerary to help you maximize your time.

I hope you enjoy Burlington as much as I did!

Weekend in Burlington, Vermont: Sunny views on Lake Champlain

About Burlington

Burlington is a hip, artsy town nestled along the stunning Lake Champlain in northwest Vermont. The Adirondack Mountains of New York are just across the lake to the west, and the Canadian border is only 46 miles to the north.

One of the things I love most about Burlington is how walkable it is — you can get to a lot of the main attractions by foot.

Map of Burlington

Click “View larger map” to pull up the map of Burlington in Google Maps.

What is Burlington known for?

Burlington is known for several things, including:

  • Lake Champlain: This is the largest freshwater lake in New England and 13th-largest lake in the U.S. There is a nice walking and biking trail along the lake, as well as opportunities for swimming, boating, fishing, and other activities.
  • Ben & Jerry’s: This beloved ice cream company was founded in Burlington in 1978 and the original store is still located downtown.
  • Church Street Marketplace: This pedestrian-only street is a favorite place for locals and visitors to browse the many shops, restaurants, and cafes.
  • Outdoor adventures: Burlington’s proximity to Lake Champlain and Vermont’s beautiful mountains and forests make it a prime destination for outdoor enthusiasts to explore.
  • University of Vermont: This university campus is in the heart of Burlington and is another nice place to walk around. The university dates all the way back to 1791 and is known for its programs in environmental studies, medicine, and engineering.

How many days should you spend in Burlington?

While you could definitely spend a week or more in Burlington to take full advantage of all the hiking trails and other activities available, I think Burlington is a great place to visit on the weekend.

I arrived there on a Friday night and left on Sunday morning and was able to experience a lot in that time. This post is especially geared toward those who are considering a weekend trip to Burlington.

Weekend in Burlington, Vermont: Picturesque Church Street Marketplace

3-day weekend in Burlington, Vermont

If you’re planning a long weekend in Burlington, here are some ideas of how to spend three days there (assuming an afternoon departure on day three).

Breakfast: The Skinny Pancake

Start off your trip right at The Skinny Pancake, a popular crêperie not far from Waterfront Park. You can choose from either sweet or savory crepes (or both!). Customers rave about the Johnny Crepe, Chicken Bacon Rancher, Choco Monkey, and Hot Apple Crumble.

Visit Waterfront Park

After breakfast, take a short walk to Waterfront Park along the shores of Lake Champlain. This 12-acre park includes a scenic boardwalk, playground, and skatepark.

Tour ECHO, Leahy Center for Lake Champlain

Next to Waterfront Park is the ECHO, Leahy Center for Lake Champlain, a non-profit organization and science museum right on the water.

The center focuses on promoting understanding of the ecology, culture, and history of the Lake Champlain Basin. There are numerous interactive exhibits and displays that are fun for all ages!

Lunch: A Single Pebble

Stop for lunch at A Single Pebble, a Chinese restaurant that is highly rated for its authentic dishes, unique flavors, and variety of both meat and vegetarian options.

In the words of a Google reviewer , “I’ve eaten in Chinatown in Philadelphia, New York, and San Francisco; this was the best Chinese food we’ve ever had… and it’s not even close.”

  • Bike the Burlington Greenway

After fueling up with a good meal, head back to Lake Champlain to bike the Burlington Greenway, a 7.5-mile trail that runs along the shores of the lake, providing stunning views of the water and the Adirondack Mountains in the background.

The Greenway is also open to walkers, joggers, and rollerbladers if you’d prefer a different exercise method. The trail connects several other recreational areas in Burlington, including Waterfront Park, North Beach, and Oakledge Park.

🚴🏿‍♂️ FUN FACT: The Burlington Greenway is part of the East Coast Greenway, a 3,000-mile trail system that stretches from Maine to Florida.

  • Dinner: Waterworks Food + Drink

Just outside of Burlington in the small town of Winooski is Waterworks Food + Drink, a cozy restaurant located near the falls on the Winooski River. If you’re going there on the weekend, you’ll want to make a reservation on their website ahead of time to secure a spot.

North Beach on Lake Champlain

Enjoy a performance at The Flynn

Catch a show at Burlington’s historic performing arts center, The Flynn . They host a variety of performances throughout the year, including concerts, stage plays, films, and more.

For a more relaxed live music venue, check out a place like Radio Bean or Light Club Lamp Shop . Or if you’re ready to laugh, visit the Vermont Comedy Club .

  • Breakfast: Henry’s Diner

Experience an authentic, all-American breakfast at Henry’s Diner, not far from Church Street Marketplace. My cousin and I enjoyed every part of this place, from the friendly staff to the generous portion sizes. It’s definitely a must-stop while in Burlington.

Note: I recommend arriving close to when they open to avoid waiting in a long line. This place is popular on the weekend!

Weekend in Burlington, Vermont: Hearty breakfast at Henry's Diner

Experience the Burlington Farmers Market

About a 13-minute walk (or 3-minute drive) from Henry’s Diner is the Burlington Farmers Market at 345 Pine Street. The market takes place every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. from mid-May through the end of October and features dozens of craft, agriculture, and prepared food vendors to browse and sample.

Shop along Church Street Marketplace

After exploring all the food options at the Farmers Market, head over to Church Street Marketplace for more walking and shopping.

If you talk to anyone who has lived in or visited Burlington, Church Street Marketplace is usually one of the first recommendations they will share.

This pedestrian-only street is lined with dozens of shops and restaurants and feels like the heart of Burlington. My cousin and I spent hours exploring the variety of stores here — so fun!

Boutiques galore in Burlington

  • Lunch: The Farmhouse Tap & Grill

After our breakfast at Henry’s Diner, we were full until well into the afternoon, so a break at Black Cap Coffee & Pastry on Church Street was perfect to tie us over until dinner. But if you’re looking for something more substantial for lunch, try The Farmhouse Tap & Grill , featuring delicious food from local Vermont farms.

Hike the Red Rocks Park Loop Trail

If you’re looking for an easy hike after lunch, the 2.7-mile Red Rocks Park Loop Trail takes only about an hour to complete and provides beautiful views of Lake Champlain along the way.

If you’d prefer to bike again, another option for some afternoon exercise is the 14.5-mile Island Line Rail Trail that has great reviews.

Take a cruise on the Spirit of Ethan Allen

Another popular activity on Lake Champlain is a cruise on the Spirit of Ethan Allen. You can choose from a variety of cruise options, including a scenic narrated cruise, dinner cruise, or sunset cruise.

The cruises last anywhere from an hour and a half to three hours and are a great way to experience the beauty of the lake and surrounding mountains.

Dinner: American Flatbread Burlington Hearth

If you decide not to do the Spirit of Ethan Allen dinner cruise, another excellent dinner choice is American Flatbread, where you can feast on delicious, wood-fired flatbread pizzas with locally sourced ingredients.

  • Grab ice cream from Ben & Jerry’s

What better way to top off the day than with a scoop or two of Vermont’s famous ice cream — Ben & Jerry’s — which actually started in Burlington in 1978. Stop by the Ben & Jerry’s ice cream shop on Church Street and choose from over 30 different flavors.

Weekend in Burlington, Vermont: Ben & Jerry's is a Vermont staple

  • Breakfast: The Café HOT.

Start your last day in Burlington by indulging in the best breakfast sandwich you might ever have at The Café HOT. I ordered their Secret Biscuit Sandwich and it was A-MA-ZING. I am still thinking about their homemade biscuits and pickled red onion sauce.

Sandwiches from The Cafe HOT

Grab local goods from City Market

If you want some local snacks for the road, stop by the City Market cooperative grocery store, open every day from 7 a.m.-9 p.m. This is where I picked up some Vermont coffee to bring home — they have a nice selection of beans to choose from.

Tour Shelburne Farms

About 7 miles south of Burlington is the well-known Shelburne Farms, which could be a nice way to top off your visit. It’s a 1,400-acre working farm that’s been around since the late 19th century. Today, the farm prides itself on its efforts in education and sustainable agriculture.

The farm hosts tours, cheesemaking classes, and workshops if you want to do something more organized. If you prefer to just browse around the farm, there are plenty of walking trails, a children’s farmyard, and a seasonal restaurant on the property as well.

2-day weekend in Burlington, Vermont

If you only have two days in Burlington, here is a condensed version of the three-day itinerary, featuring what I would consider the best-of-the-best things to do.

  • Visit Burlington Waterfront Park
  • Cruise on the Spirit of Ethan Allen
  • See a show at The Flynn or hear live music at Radio Bean
  • Take a morning hike on the Red Rocks Park Loop Trail
  • Visit the Burlington Farmers Market (if on a Saturday)
  • Lunch: The Skinny Pancake
  • Shop at Church Street Marketplace
  • Coffee from Black Cap Coffee & Pastry before departure

How to get to Burlington

BY PLANE: Burlington International Airport is only a few miles from the city center.

BY CAR: It took us about 3.5 hours to get to Burlington from Boston , and it was a beautiful, scenic drive with minimal traffic. Here are distances to Burlington from a few major cities:

  • Montreal, Canada: 94 miles (1.75 hours)
  • Manchester, NH: 167 miles (2.75 hours)
  • Boston, MA: 216 miles (3.5 hours)
  • Portland, ME : 257 miles (4 hours)
  • New York, NY: 299 miles (5.5. hours)
  • Philadelphia, PA: 381 miles (6.5 hours)

BY BUS: You can take a coach bus like Greyhound to Burlington from lots of different towns and cities throughout New England and beyond. This is how I returned to Boston after my cousin and I parted ways. (The ride took about 5.5 hours.)

Where to stay

We stayed in this Airbnb Lake View Room and it was a great experience. Vida’s home is beautiful and the guest bedroom has stunning views of Lake Champlain in the distance. This was a nice way to get a local living experience during our time in Burlington.

If you’d rather stay in a hotel, I’d recommend trying something unique to Burlington. Hotel Vermont has great reviews for its cozy decor and free bike rentals that allow you to easily explore Burlington and Lake Champlain.

Best time to visit Burlington

Burlington is beautiful any time of year but gets the most tourists in the summer and fall when the weather is warmer and you can fully enjoy all the outdoor activities available.

Things to do in Burlington in the spring

Temperatures can still fluctuate quite a bit in the spring, so you’ll want to plan for both warm and cold weather. We visited Burlington at the end of March/beginning of April and had snow the first day, then temperatures in the 60s on day two!

Spring is maple syrup season in Vermont so this is a great time to visit a sugar house like Palmer’s in Shelburne and taste their fresh syrup.

Our favorite thing to do during our visit was shop along Church Street Marketplace and explore Burlington’s delicious food scene.

We were bummed that bike rental companies weren’t in operation yet so we couldn’t bike the Burlington Greenway like we wanted to, but the trail was still nice for walking.

Note: If you stay at Hotel Vermont you’ll get complimentary bike rentals with your stay.

Things to do in Burlington in the summer

Summer is when you can enjoy all things outdoors, like relaxing on North Beach, paddle boarding on Lake Champlain, biking the Burlington Greenway, or hiking the Red Rocks Park Loop Trail.

This is also a great time to experience the Burlington Farmers Market on Saturdays and attend an outdoor concert at Waterfront Park.

Things to do in Burlington in the fall

Northern Vermont is one of the most beautiful places to see fall foliage, and it’s worth taking a drive around Burlington and nearby towns like Stowe to experience all the colors.

The weather is usually still pretty pleasant in the fall, so this is still a nice time to bike the Burlington Greenway or go for a hike.

Things to do in Burlington in the winter

If you enjoy a snowy paradise, you might love Burlington in the winter. The city is within an hour’s drive from some of the best ski resorts in the state, including Sugarbush, Stowe Mountain, and Smugglers’ Notch.

Several Burlington parks have outdoor ice skating rinks, including Lakeside, Battery, and Callahan.

Winter is also the perfect time to enjoy Burlington’s cozy restaurant and cafe scene or see a show at The Flynn or Vermont Comedy Club.

Weekend in Burlington, Vermont: Stunning Lake Champlain views

If Time: Visit Stowe

If you have another day to spare, it’s worth driving to the picturesque town of Stowe as part of your Burlington itinerary. This postcard-worthy place represents New England at its finest with its white church steeples, storied buildings, and hilly landscape.

We visited Stowe as a stop on our drive to Burlington from Boston. We spent a Friday there before driving to Burlington that same evening.

Best things to do in Stowe:

  • Get pizza from Piecasso
  • Relax with coffee at Black Cap Coffee & Pastry
  • Explore art galleries and shops on Main Street
  • Hike the Stowe Pinnacle Trail (hard) or Bingham Falls Trail (easy)
  • Ski at Stowe Mountain Resort

Stowe, Vermont

Wrap-up: Is Burlington worth visiting?

Burlington, Vermont is a perfect weekend destination in New England. Living in Boston, it felt nice to escape the city and feel like I was a world away, even though I was only about three hours north. If you enjoy being in nature or exploring new food scenes, Burlington is an excellent choice!

Burlington has a happening downtown area full of restaurants, cozy cafes and immersive galleries. Just moments away from the downtown, is the University of Vermont Campus along with outdoor adventures and classic ski resort towns.

Where to Stay

The small city of Burlington makes it easy to walk around and with the likelihood that you’ll hire a car for adventures further afield, you shouldn’t feel pressure to stay directly downtown. Although having the bustling Church Street or Lake Champlain within a quick stroll is hard to beat.

If you have a car handy, you may want to take advantage of Airbnb and VRBOs that dot that lakeshore and offer impressive vistas without being far from the fun.

The Best Time of Year to Visit Burlington

Burlington, Vermont has something to offer travelers at any time of year. While the winter can see bitter temperatures and a loss of fall foliage, there are several fantastic ski resorts within proximity. Burlington is a great place to base yourself when you’re not carving up the mountains.

Spring in Burlington sees the landscape come back to life with blooming wildflowers coasting the valleys and hills. This is also a great time to enjoy some patented Vermont maple syrup.

The summer in Burlington is when life in town goes to another level. Although much of the student population dwindles, there are festivals to enjoy and the mountains and lakes are waiting to be discovered. Go fishing, camping and hiking under the sun, which isn’t stifling hot.

Having said all that, there’s something special about Burlington in the fall. The impeccable foliage is some of the best in the US. The amazing colors dramatically transform the landscape, and as the leaves fall, you will enjoy more eye-catching views.

Day 1: Church Street, Campus, and Cycling

When beginning your travels through Vermont’s largest city, begin on beautiful Church Street. The main drag of Burlington is a car-free sanctuary with shops and restaurants in abundance. While only four blocks long, the street is packed with things to see and do.

At any time of year, you may stumble upon a gathering of locals and travelers for a festival or live performance. The hungry restaurant-goers spill out onto the paths, creating a lofty atmosphere perfect for walking around and catching your first glimpse of life in the city.

burlington vermont day trip

If you’ve traveled all morning, stroll down the street and pick a place to eat that piques your interest. Or spend some time jumping between arts and crafts stores, while making your way to the street’s centerpiece, the First Unitarian Universalist Church. From anywhere along Church Street, you can admire the bell tower before enjoying the beautiful architecture up close.

One store you must stop by on your journey along Church Street is the iconic Frog Hollow Craft Center. For over four decades, the store has been welcoming curious guests, eager to see the best of Vermont artists and artisans.

Since the beginning, Frog Hollow has collaborated with over 500 local artists along with creating dozens of craft courses and arts classes. As you wander in, you will be captivated by the wonderful gallery that is always changing and promoting new work. This may also have to do with locals and travelers alike taking their favorite piece home with them.

Aside from the standard painting, you will discover a world of caricatures, glasswork, pottery and exceptional photography.

burlington vermont day trip

From Church Street, make your way to Main Street, which rises steadily behind the downtown area towards the campus of the University of Vermont. The hilltop campus, which first welcomed students in the late 18 th century, offers superb views of Lake Champlain.

Over time, many prominent members of the local community built their stately homes above the busy downtown and waterfront area, choosing to forego lakeside views for higher elevation. On your way to the campus, you’ll pass well-preserved homes and mansions that date back over a hundred years, providing excellent examples of pristine New England architecture.

burlington vermont day trip

Later, when exploring the University of Vermont Campus, make a beeline for the impressive Williams Science Hall. The large red-brick structure is a striking sight to see and sits high upon the campus’ hill

Aside from exploring, there is another stop you should make on your walk through campus. That being the Fleming Museum of Art. The museum is home to over 20,000 artifacts, artworks and special collections. They combine to cover many eras of history and locations around the world.

You can explore exhibits which highlight works and objects from around the United States, Africa, Europe, the Middle East and even Ancient Egypt. The African and Egyptian exhibits are particularly striking, with sculptures, media and contemporary interpretations of history on display. You will also find hundreds of Ancient Egypt artifacts, including a mummy and a coffin.

Also on display are prominent local artists along with an important exhibit on Native American art and culture, covering much of the country.

On your way to our next activity, head back through Church Street and take in some of the local street art. The main one being a mural called ‘Everyone Loves a Parade!’ by Pierre Hardy.

burlington vermont day trip

After witnessing Lake Champlain from the campus, finish your day by exploring the shorelines in more detail. One of the best things to do in Burlington, Vermont, is to tackle the Burlington Bike Path. The paved path stretches along the stunning shoreline for miles, and is a popular place of exercise for locals.

In total, the path is 7.5 miles (12km) one-way, making the return trip a bit difficult on foot. But if you have several hours to spend, you could challenge yourself to do the full trip from downtown Burlington to the beautiful North Beach and back.

Going for a ride is likely to be the best option, and if you don’t have one handy, you can pick on up at North Star Sports or Local Motion .

After dinner, if you feel like keeping the night rolling, you will have plenty of bars and live music venues to choose from. Burlington, after all, is a college town. So if class is in session, you can expect a happening scene, especially on and around Church Street.

For something casual and fun, head to the Archives for craft beer, cocktails and vintage pinball. If you want to catch some live tunes, make your way to Nectar’s for local acts and cheap eats.

Where to Eat On Your First Day

For lunch on your first day in Burlington, head to the local favorite, Sweetwaters. The diverse menu and large space makes it the perfect place for larger groups to gather, with something delicious for everyone.

If you’re undecided on your dinner plans, make a trip to the new top restaurant in town, Pascolo Ristorante. Serving upscale Italian cuisine with a wonderful evening atmosphere, you can’t go wrong.

Day 2 Homesteads, Road Trips, and Stowe

Before or after breakfast, a great way to begin day two in Burlington is to explore the local Farmers Market. In the warmer months of the year, Burlington puts on a bustling market along the open spaces of Pine Street, just out of downtown.

With crowds and lack of parking, enjoy a pleasant morning stroll through the picturesque town and arrive at the market on foot. Vermont’s reputation as an environmental state is on full display at the vibrant market, with excellent local produce and amazing food to try. Who knows, you may even want to skip breakfast to leave more room in the belly.

Beyond fresh food, you’ll love walking among the local community who gather and create an exciting market. If you want to pick up a souvenir or memento of your travels to Burlington, this is also a great place to do it.

After completing the rounds at the Farmers Market, it’s time to get on the road. A big day of exploring the surrounding countryside awaits! First stop is the Ethan Allen Homestead. Found on 1400 acres of gorgeous New England land, the homestead was once home to a famous member of the Revolutionary War, Ethan Allen. Under the banner of New Hampshire, Allen fought off New York’s attempts to claim the land, leading to the creation of Vermont.

For obvious reason, Allen became a local hero and his homestead has been restored and preserved for you to enjoy. The various buildings house historical and archaeological exhibits. While casual hiking trails meander through the woods with interpretive signage along the way.

burlington vermont day trip

Before leaving, wander across to the Ethan Allen Park. Home to an observation tower, enjoy immaculate views of the lake and city.

Next up, a road trip to Stowe! Rather than take the quick 45-minute journey along the interstate, choose the scenic route. Head north towards Cambridge where you can join route 108, aka Smuggler’s Notch. If you can handle the winding mountain roads, then you and the crew will be in for a visual treat.

burlington vermont day trip

Along the way, climb the side of Vermont’s highest peak, Mt Mansfield via the notch. Smuggler’s Notch is so narrow that it closes during winter because snowplows cannot meander their way past the massive boulders and along the road. The cliffs rise to one side, and giant rocks dot the roadside. Throughout is bright foliage and an immersive driving experience.

Be sure to stop by Smuggler’s Cave information center to learn about the natural phenomena that created such dramatic scenery. You can also explore the caves where smugglers once hid to escape captivity.

burlington vermont day trip

Once you’ve arrived in Stowe, you’ll be treated with a beautiful afternoon in a classic Vermont town. Flanked by the towering Mt Mansfield, Stowe is famous for being one of the United States’ first ski towns.

Surrounded by stunning scenery, wherever you look, you’ll enjoy simply walking through the city and experiencing the quiet and peaceful setting. There are several galleries to explore, including the Helen Day Arts Center. Another top activity is riding the gondola at Stowe Mountain Resort and make the journey to the Mt Mansfield Peak.

On your way back from Stowe, take the quick route, also known as the ‘Skier’s Highway’. Along the journey, you’ll pass several of the top ski resorts in Vermont.

burlington vermont day trip

End your day with an amazing sunset on board Lake Champlain Cruises. The huge lake flanks the entire town and stretches as far south as New York. Aboard the Spirit of Ethan Allen III, you can explore the lake under the falling sun, while learning more about the Revolutionary War and important historical events that took place around the lake.

Where to Eat

Vermont is home to an envious number of great brunches that are elevated by the cozy scenery. Our tip for day two is the Friendly Toast. With unique decor and delicious breakfast eats, the spacious restaurant means you won’t have to wait long for a table.

When making your way through Stowe, be sure to stop by the Stowe Sandwich Company for lunch. The hearty and healthy sandwiches also come with several vegan options and will have you fueled for the rest of the day.

After a big day on the road, kick back and relax at Ri Ra’s, an unpretentious pub serving mouthwatering Irish style plates. Once the meal is over, walk out onto Church Street and enjoy an ice cream at the original Ben & Jerry’s location!

Day 3: Lake Champlain, Watersports, and Plenty of Beer

Your third and final day in Burlington is all about enjoying the dazzling Lake Champlain. Begin your day at the lake by visiting the ECHO Leahy Center on the water’s edge. The center shows off the natural history of Lake Champlain along with the region’s heritage.

This is one of the top things to do in Burlington with kids, with several permanent and rotating exhibits. The interactive displays are sure to keep the young ones captivated. Some of the most popular exhibits include exploring the depths of Lake Champlain, the dozen frog species that cover six continents along with exploring the human history of Burlington.

However, nothing beats the kids catching themselves on TV or being a weather reporter.

If the sun is out, then it’s time to get on the water at last! Walkers may want to tackle the hike to North Beach, but it’ll be hard to pass up sailing or paddleboarding on the pristine water of Lake Champlain.

The nearby Community Sailing Center can set you up with a dinghy-style sailboat and give you the opportunity to explore the far reaches of the lake (wind permitting). Other options include jumping in a kayak or canoe and venturing to North Beach. For something a bit more laid-back, hire a SUP for just $16 and slowly adventure around the water while soaking in the amazing views.

Finish it off with some relaxing at North Beach and enjoying the atmosphere by the lake!

With a day of excitement on the lake, enjoy some craft beer and a bite to eat at Foam Brewers. Located on the edge of Lake Champlain, the small and independent company is all about creating imaginative beverages for the adventurous palate.

Regardless of how much you like craft beer, nothing can top the location of the brewery. It’s the perfect place to end your time in Burlington, Vermont, as you look out over the mesmerizing lake and reflect on all that’s come to pass.

Whatever beer you set your sight on, be sure to complement it with Foam Brewers’ delectable cheese plate.

Where to Eat on Day Three

When it comes to breakfast on your final day in Burlington, Vermont, why not leave it all up to chance and dine at A Single Pebble. This off-beat breakfast option will be a novel experience. Here the chef is in control and serves whatever he or she decides, and upon delivery you get to choose whether or not to try it.

If you don’t dine at Foam Brewers, then be on the lookout for one of the many food carts operating in Burlington during the warmer months. The top one is Hong’s Chinese Dumplings. Highly rated among local students, the so-called Dumpling Lady has a killer recipe and unforgettable dumplings.

Final Thoughts

Three days in Burlington, Vermont will grant you an excellent insight into the local community and a chance to explore Vermont’s iconic scenery. The city itself is a wonderful place to walk around, coffee in hand while taking it all in.

Especially in the summer, you’ll discover events and festivals that provide another layer of fun for couples, friends and family. While the sun beats down on the lake, creating the perfect opportunity to explore.

Whatever time of year you decide to visit the classic New England town, you will be treated with smiling faces, stunning views and plenty of delicious eats.

Thursday, june 24, 2021, a day trip to burlington, vermont.

burlington vermont day trip

Burlington, Vermont is just about everything you could want from a city in the Green Mountain State. It's Vermont's biggest city and it's full of good food, famous breweries, bike paths, eccentric shops, and the crown jewel of them all, Lake Champlain. Burlington is also a college town (home to the University of Vermont) which certainly helps to keep the area up and coming and trendy.

You can find a dozen reasons to visit Burlington in the summertime. For me, it's the dog-friendly atmosphere, craft breweries, amazing bike path, and access to the lake. When the sun is out and the green mountain states takes on its namesake, it's the perfect place to spend the day - tag along.

burlington vermont day trip

Getting Here If you look at the map, Burlington is up there. It's only about 45 miles from the Canadian border.  This means cooler temperatures in the summer months and a shorter summer. It's also about 40 minutes west of Stowe and a quick trip on the ferry from the Adirondacks across the lake. You could easily spend a weekend in this beautiful northern city but its proximity to so many amazing places make it the perfect day trip while visiting the northern New England states.

Parking

Start the day downtown by the waterfront. There is metered parking along the city streets, there are parking garages, and paid lots. We paid $3 an hour to park in the Pease Lot down by the waterfront. Here is a parking map with parking info .

Waterfront Park

Once you've parked, grab a coffee and breakfast and take in the views of the lake. The waterfront park area has swinging benches, areas to picnic, city bikes to rent, access to the bike path, skate park, dog park, and outdoor exercise stations. There is a bathroom at the tourist booth/information area at the parking lot by the park.

Island Line Trail: If you want to cover some distance on the bike, the Island Line Trail covers 14-miles along Lake Champlain. This path will take you over the causeway and you can eventually hop on the  Local Motion Bike Ferry  (seasonal) over "the Cut", a 200-foot gap in the causeway and continue over to the island on the lake, Grand Isle. It's a great way to see more of Burlington as long as you get an early start.

burlington vermont day trip

Stop along the bike path for a swim. Lake Champlain is much bigger than you think. The lake is 12 miles wide at its widest point. The average depth is 64 feet but the deepest point is about 400 feet. There are 587 miles of shoreline with 71 islands in the lake. The beaches are nice, especially for a lake, and the clear warm-ish water is actually inviting. There are some great  Swim Areas  along the lake and  Texaco Beach (just south of North Beach) is even dog-friendly.

burlington vermont day trip

You can't come to Burlington without stopping at one of the well-known breweries. It's a great spot after biking/walking for a refresher and a snack.  Citizen Cider , Zero Gravity , and  Foam Brewers  are the big names in town. Fiddlehead Brewing Company is located 15 minutes south of the city in Shelburne and also makes some tasty beers (perfect stop on your way home). Citizen Cider has a full menu at the cider pub and a great outdoor space to hang out (dogs allowed on the patio). I stopped here on my first trip to Burlington and loved this cider spot. Foam Brewers snags an excellent spot right off the bike path near the water and features some tasty brews from soups to double IPAs. There is also a limited snack menu and Adam, the dogs and I stopped here after our walk on the bike path for wings and a beer(s).

burlington vermont day trip

Church Street Marketplace

After you walk/bike and buzz a bit on the bike path and breweries, head back to where you started and make your way to the Church Street Marketplace. The marketplace is a pedestrian-only section of Burlington near the waterfront that can be compared to an open-air mall. You can walk the car-less streets and see various street performers, events, pop in and out of shops, and dine outside at the various restaurants. I recommend scoping out the menus as you walk and decide on a dinner spot.

There are so many options for food by the water and right in the marketplace. We had a fussy baby and two dogs so we opted for something quick and did poke bowls (delicious). Last time in Portland, we had a nice lunch at Sweet Waters and enjoyed local beer and delicious food. You can't go wrong in my opinion but this  Best Restaurant List  will help you find a place for dinner if you need some inspiration.

14 Top-Rated Attractions & Things to Do in Burlington, VT

Written by Barbara Radcliffe Rogers Updated Dec 28, 2023

Vermont's largest city – and only city of any size – lies in a beautiful location on a hillside overlooking Lake Champlain and the skyline of the Adirondack mountains, on the opposite shore in New York.

The thriving downtown reaches right to the shore, but its main shopping district is a few streets above on Church Street. There is almost always something happening in this broad, car-free space lined by shops and restaurants. Crowning the hill is the stately campus of the University of Vermont, which gives Burlington a young, hip vibe.

Don't expect a big city, but do expect to find a high concentration of arts and cultural attractions, as well as plenty of active options for tourists to enjoy. Burlington has a large population of artists and high-quality craftspeople, whose works you'll see in the many galleries and studios throughout the city and surrounding towns.

The Flynn Theater is a magnet for top national and international performers and music, and Burlington is home to the Vermont Symphony Orchestra, as well as music and theater groups at the university.

You'll have no trouble finding things to do here with our handy list of top tourist attractions in Burlington.

Lake champlain cruises, echo leahy center, waterfront park and burlington bike path, flynn center for the performing arts, south end arts district, shelburne museum, ethan allen homestead, day trip to stowe, day trip to smugglers notch, robert hull fleming museum of art, the hill and university of vermont, lake champlain islands, shelburne farms, where to stay in burlington for sightseeing, map of attractions & things to do in burlington, vt, burlington, vt - climate chart, more must-see destinations near burlington.

Church Street Marketplace

Although it's only four blocks long, Burlington's Church Street packs plenty of action into its short length. The traffic-free street is wide enough to accommodate large gatherings of people for the many festivals and events throughout the year, as well as providing plenty of space for cafés and restaurants to spill onto the pavement, creating the air of an Italian piazza.

Overlooking the street from the upper end is the church it's named for, the First Unitarian Universalist Church. Notice the granite line in the brick pavement, with stones engraved with cities around the world that lie close to the same longitudinal line.

Among the many shops that open onto Church Street is Frog Hollow Craft Center , known for its selection of the finest works of Vermont craftspeople. Permanent public art works include a life-sized statue of local jazz artist Big Joe Burrell; a sleek metal Fish Fountain; and a mural, Everyone Loves a Parade! by Canadian muralist Pierre Hardy.

Listed as a National Register Historic District, Church Street has also been named one of the Great Public Spaces in America.

Lake Champlain Cruises

Lake Champlain stretches in a north-south line between Vermont and New York, with a small portion of the northern end in Canada. Its width varies from less than half a mile to 12 miles, and most of its waters are in Vermont. Spirit of Ethan Allen III offers sightseeing cruises on Lake Champlain with a narration on the Revolutionary War and other periods of the lake's history.

Lake Champlain's largest cruise ship, at 140 feet long, it can carry 363 passengers, and along with several daily sightseeing cruises in season, it offers lunch and dinner cruises, even occasional dance cruises.

Other boat excursions from Burlington's downtown docks include daily sailing cruises and longer private charters on classic Friendship Sloops.

Ferries cross several times daily in the summer and fall, between Burlington and Port Kent, NY, offering beautiful views of the mountains and lake. The ferry crossing takes about an hour.

Address: Burlington Boat House, College Street, Burlington, Vermont

ECHO Leahy Center

The ECHO Leahy Center, at the shore of the lake, features the natural history of the area, as well as the historical heritage of the Lake Champlain area. Permanent exhibits, many of them interactive, appeal to all ages as they explore the depths of the lake, showcase 15 frog species from six continents (including the world's most poisonous frog), and explore the geology of the Champlain Basin and the people who have lived in the region throughout history.

Kids can see themselves on TV at the Be a Watershed Weather Reporter studio, and young children have a hands-on discovery center all their own. The ECHO Leahy Center is one of the favorite things to do for families in Burlington.

The award-winning "green" building offers panoramic views of the Lake and Adirondack Mountains from its deck. Next to ECHO is the Lake Champlain Navy Memorial.

Address: 1 College Street, Burlington, Vermont

Waterfront Park, Burlington

A wide green swath of park with a bike path and promenade borders the lake shore, stretching some distance to the north and south of the town landing at the bottom of College Street. Near the docks, look for Vermont's only All-America Display Garden , where the newest varieties of flowering ornamental plants bloom all summer.

Waterfront Park is popular for running, cycling, walking, picnicking, and for frequent festivals throughout the summer and fall.

Above the shore, Battery Park lies at the top of Battery Street, marking the site of the battery built there in 1812. From this position, U.S. artillery fought British ships on Lake Champlain in August of 1813.

The Flynn

Much of Burlington's packed music and performance calendar is thanks to the Flynn Center's 1,411-seat auditorium. The Flynn is home to the Vermont Symphony Orchestra, the Vermont Youth Orchestra, the Vermont Stage Company, the Lyric Theatre, and the UVM Lane Series.

The variety is astonishing, and any season might bring programs as diverse as a Gospel choir, violinist Itzhak Perlman, Celtic Women, a classical ballet, a Broadway touring production of Hairspray , Bonnie Raitt, Al Franken, pre-Broadway musicals, a cirque acrobat troupe from Quebec, and Afro-pop superstar Angélique Kidjo.

Along with the Art Deco auditorium, a 180-seat cabaret space hosts more intimate performances. A gallery showcases the work of local artists.

Address: 153 Main Street, Burlington, Vermont

Official site: https://www.flynnvt.org/

A former industrial zone along the lakeshore south of the center has morphed into one of Burlington's liveliest art and dining scenes, filled with galleries, art spaces, and events. Your first stop should be the S.P.A.C.E Gallery , an art collective on Pine Street, where dozens of artists work and display their paintings, drawings, prints, collages, sculpture, photography, silver and stone jewelry, ceramics, and art in all media.

The S.P.A.C.E. Gallery holds monthly exhibits, with opening receptions during First Friday Art Walks, another feature of the South End Arts District. In September, and throughout the fall, the South End Art Hop in Space showcases more than 50 Vermont artists, providing the public a chance to purchase affordable works in all mediums directly from the artists. Look also for ArtsRiot, a music and restaurant hub in a converted warehouse.

SS Ticonderoga at the Shelburne Museum

On the outskirts of Burlington, this large, open-air museum gathers original buildings from different eras of Vermont's past into a campus that doesn't pretend to be a real village, but shows each house, barn, and shop with period furnishings and the activities of rural life in its time.

The 39 historic buildings, even the historic lake steamer SS Ticonderoga – hauled here by rail and restored, are either furnished or used as display settings for some exceptional collections of decorative arts, paintings, folk art, and Americana.

The grounds include a railroad depot; private car and locomotive; covered bridge; jail; print shop; apothecary; schoolhouse; country store; meeting house; lighthouse; and a round barn, one of the few to survive in New England.

The two-room log Settlers' House shows Vermont life in the 1790s, with an open hearth fireplace, furnishings, and a vegetable garden. The reproduction barn houses demonstrations of early crafts and cooking.

Particularly outstanding among the collections are rare hatboxes, quilts, hooked rugs, costumes, decoys, tin and woodenware, 18th-century English furniture, and paintings. The latter represent not just American artists, but include the French Impressionists and even Rembrandt.

An entire horseshoe-shaped building was constructed just to display a 500-foot-long handmade circus parade. The round barn is used to showcase special exhibits.

Address: 6000 Shelburne Road, Shelburne, Vermont

Ethan Allen Homestead

On 1,400 acres of land north of the city is the farmhouse that was the home of Revolutionary War hero, Ethan Allen. Allen and his brother, Ira, were landowners under New Hampshire grants, which they defended ardently against New York's attempts to claim.

In the end, neither state could establish its authority, and the residents finally formed the Republic of Vermont, which later became the state. So along with being a hero of the Revolution, Allen became something of a folk hero in Vermont.

His home has been restored, and other farm buildings house archaeology and history exhibits. Hiking trails throughout his land have signage to explain the natural environment.

In the adjacent Ethan Allen Park , an observation tower reveals views over Lake Champlain and the surrounding area.

Address: 1 Ethan Allen Parkway, Burlington, Vermont

Fall colors in Stowe, Vermont

One of the top tourist attractions in Vermont , Stowe is an easy drive from Burlington. Follow Interstate 89 south to Waterbury and take Route 100, known as "The Skiers Highway" for the number of ski mountains it connects on its way through the state.

The classic New England town begs to be photographed, along with Mt. Mansfield, which forms the skyline to the northwest. Stowe's primary fame is as one of the nation's first ski resorts, and skiers still fill its inns and lodges in the winter.

But there are plenty of places to visit here year-round as well, with a beautiful bike and walking path through the valley and into the hills. Shoppers and art lovers can gallery hop to admire works of Vermont artists and craftspeople, and the Helen Day Arts Center features Vermont artists.

Learn the story of skiing here and elsewhere at the Vermont Ski Museum in the former church on Main Street, or ride the gondola at Stowe Mountain Resort to the summit of Mt. Mansfield.

Winding road in Smugglers Notch

For those who don't mind winding mountain roads, the trip through Smugglers Notch is an unforgettable one. High on the shoulder of Mt. Mansfield , Vermont's highest peak, Smugglers Notch is a narrow pass – so narrow, in fact, that the road closes in the winter because snowplows can't maneuver among the boulders that force the road to twist and squeeze between them. The road lies below 1,000-foot cliffs, the source of the gigantic boulders strewn throughout the pass.

Follow Route 15 through Jericho to Jeffersonville, from which Route 108 heads past Smugglers Notch Ski Area and into the notch. Stop at the Smugglers Cave information center near the top to read about the glaciers that dropped the boulders, and to explore the caves once used by smugglers. You can stop at other points to walk among the boulders.

On the University of Vermont campus, the Robert Hull Fleming Museum of Art features more than 20,000 objects in collections covering American, African, European, Ancient Egyptian, and Middle Eastern art, as well as work by Vermont artists. African artifacts represent the continent through sculpture and other media and include contemporary interpretations of traditional forms; the more than 400 ancient Egyptian objects include a mummy and coffin.

American art is especially strong in 19th- and 20th-century landscapes and works by artists active in Vermont since the mid-19th century, such as Audubon, Bierstadt, Winslow Homer, and Andy Warhol. European art is represented by Corot, Daumier, Dürer, Goya, and Rodin.

More than 2,000 objects from Native American cultures include bead- and quillwork, Southwest ceramics and baskets, masks from the Northwest Coast, and carvings. The Pre-Columbian collection is known for its ceramics, textiles, and stone carvings.

Address: 61 Colchester Avenue, Burlington, Vermont

The Hill

Main Street rises steadily from just above the lake shore to the hilltop campus of the University of Vermont (UVM), founded in 1791. Burlington's prosperous merchants and leaders built their stately homes and mansions on the upper slopes, above the commercial and waterfront areas, and many of the finest of these have been preserved and maintained as residences and as part of the smaller Champlain College.

Follow any of the streets to the right or left of Main Street to see examples of several architectural styles, mostly built in the latter half of the 19th century. Crowning the UVM campus is the ornate Williams Science Hall , a massive brick building with a granite block foundation. The Perkins Geology Museum displays fossils and minerals.

Small island on Lake Champlain

The Lake Champlain Islands, connected to each other and to the mainland north of Burlington by causeways and bridges, are summer recreation areas with beaches, campgrounds, and state parks. The irregular coastline of the islands creates a number of bays that are favorites for kayaking.

The gently undulating landscape is known for its apple orchards, and has the longest growing season in the state, thanks to the moderating influence of the lake. St. Anne's Shrine on Isle La Motte is at the site of Fort St. Anne, and there is also a statue of Samuel de Champlain on the island marking the spot where he supposedly landed in 1609.

Official site: www.champlainislands.com

Shelburne Farms

Once a 3,800-acre agricultural estate, its landscape design inspired by Frederick Law Olmsted, Shelburne Farms was a model horse farm and a leader in agricultural innovation. The massive Farm Barn, constructed between 1886 and 1890, is five stories high, and the courtyard alone covers nearly two acres.

Today the farm is a non-profit dedicated to sustainability and quality of life on earth, with programs that foster individual awareness and stewardship. The barn houses a dairy, where you can watch the making of the farm's award-winning cheese from the milk of the farm's pasture-raised herd of brown Swiss cows. A Sun to Cheese Tour follows the entire story of the farm's self-sustaining cheese production.

In summer, the Formal Gardens overlooking Lake Champlain are among the finest example of American gardens, especially beautiful in mid-June, when the peonies are in full bloom.

Programs for children and adults include introduction to maple sugaring, using native plants, bird conservation, medicinal plants, herbal teas, and a gardener's tour of the Formal Gardens. There is a Children's Farmyard and 10 miles of walking trails.

What to Know about Burlington, VT

All about Burlington, and why you should plan a Burlington vacation!

Where is Burlington Vermont?

Burlington is the largest city in the state of Vermont and is considered part of New England. The City of Burlington is located right on Lake Champlain, two hours north of Lake George, NY and directly across from New York State’s Adirondack Mountains.

Map of Burlington Vermont

If you’re map obsessed like me and need a visual Burlington Vermont map in order to understand its surroundings, check out the map provided below. Zoom in and out as needed!

What is Burlington, VT known for?

The City of Burlington is known for many things, like its free-spirited community, famous food spots, and proximity to Canada.

  • Politically, it is known for Bernie Sanders’ eight-year role as mayor in the ‘80’s, as well as being a liberal city.
  • Culturally, the university town is known for its free-spirited, vibrant energy and arts scene.
  • Gastronomically, it is the original home of Ben & Jerry’s, a great city for beer, and where you can find plenty of restaurants that honor locally sourced ingredients in their menus (some even nominated for James Beard awards).
  • Geographically, it is perfectly situated by upstate New York, on Lake Champlain, and not far from the Canadian Border.

Why is Burlington a great place to vacation?

Being right on the lake is a major plus for visiting the City of Burlington. This expands your activity options significantly, especially during warmer months.

There are many arts and cultural activities, an impressive food scene from locally sourced ingredients, and an obvious appreciation for outdoor well-being. Most of all, the people of Burlington make it feel quite welcoming (even for tourists!)

When to Visit Burlington

Find out the best time to visit Burlington, VT

The Best time to Visit Burlington, VT

The best time to visit Burlington depends on your interests. Burlington is special year-round, but I prefer warmer weather and love all of the activities one can do when the temperatures warm up.

  • If you are vacationing for warm weather and festivals, May – September is the best time to visit Burlington.
  • If you are a winter sports fan and want to combine nearby slopes with your Burlington itinerary, December – February is a better option.

Is it better to visit Burlington on the weekend or during the week?

With the exception of Monday (I found many things to be closed then), any day is a great day to visit Burlington!

If you want to experience Burlington’s Farmers Market, I recommend ensuring your Burlington itinerary overlaps a Saturday morning. If you want fewer fellow tourists, I definitely recommend overlapping a few weekdays.

Hotels in Burlington Vermont and more for your stay!

If you are wondering where to stay in Burlington, I recommend mapping out the things you want to do and choosing accommodations that are central to that area. Despite being a few short blocks from Church Street Marketplace, noise was never an issue during my stay at the Hilton Burlington Lake Champlain.

Hotels in Burlington Vermont

There are only few hotels located in the heart of Downtown Burlington, and the nightly rates reflect that. That said, if budget is an issue, staying closer to the airport or University can expand your options considerably.

I stayed at the Hilton Burlington Lake Champlain and it was a fantastic stay thanks to its free bike perk, beautiful rooms, and proximity to all the “happening” scenes.

Airbnb Burlington Vermont Options

There are no state regulations in Vermont against short-term renters on Airbnb, so the sharing economy is definitely an option if you are looking for an alternative to Burlington hotels.

That said, when I researched Airbnb nightly rates, they were pretty much than same as hotel room rates (unless you were only renting a private room), so you should weigh the pros and cons.

4 Day Burlington Itinerary

Here is an itinerary for four full days in Burlington, Vermont

Day 1 in Burlington, VT

I like to explore my bearings on my first day anywhere—far and wide! So I suggest you hop on a bike, and explore the shoreline and all the outdoor recreation Burlington has to offer. After you’ve recharged with lunch, take that exploration to the lake with a cruise.

Here’s the breakdown for day one in Burlington.

  • Have a delicious breakfast at Kru Coffee . I got the spicy vegetarian egg sandwich on an English muffin and it was delicious. You could also try Penny Cluse if it is open (depends on which days you are in town).
  • Bike along the Burlington Greenway bike path along Lake Champlain. If you are staying at the Hilton Burlington Lake Champlain, bikes are free to borrow !
  • You could honestly spend all day biking! There are beaches to explore along the Greenway and other recreational activities.
  • Enjoy lunch at Istanbul Kebab House . I recommend splitting a mezze platter and some kebabs!
  • If you have extra time, use it to stop by Church Street Marketplace and get your bearings (I like to take mental notes of what I’d like to visit later).
  • Take a relaxing sunset cruise along Lake Champlain on the Spirit of Ethan Allen . They serve dinner on the Spirit of Ethan Allen cruise if you want to order food ( and it is delicious! ) You can also just order a picnic charcuterie cheese board and then dessert like I did. Sunset cruises are 2.5 hours and board at 6:00 pm.

Day 2 in Burlington, VT

On day two, I recommend you spend it tasting another breakfast spot’s menu, grab fresh juice to go, and then head over to Shelburne (part of the greater Burlington area) for a museum & wine experience.

Here’s the breakdown for day two in Burlington.

  • Enjoy breakfast and the amazing blessing that is fresh baked goods at August First . We loved this place so much we came twice during our last visit. I highly recommend the avocado toast with everything seasoning and the “Eat the East” breakfast sandwich (it has maple curry aioli and cumin onion chutney, OMG).
  • Grab some fresh cold-pressed juice from The Vermont Juice Co. up the street. I get the Brain Boost or Berry Beetiful!
  • Head down to Shelburne for two amazing activities! The Shelburne Museum and then wine tasting at the Shelburne Vineyard.
  • The Shelburne Museum could honestly be a whole day affair; tickets actually are valid for two days because of this. I recommend lots of sun coverage!
  • Wine tasting at the Shelburne Vineyard down the road is picturesque and perfect for a couple’s date or friends activity. Be sure to reserve your spot in advance.
  • Wind down and enjoy dining by the lake with a food truck vibe and locally sourced ingredients at Farmers and Foragers Dockside . The fish tacos were delicious.
  • Dessert anyone? Head over to Church Street Marketplace and join the queue of people excitedly waiting for their Ben & Jerry’s ice cream treat!

Day 3 in Burlington, VT

Spend the third day of your Burlington getaway enjoying many of Burlington’s best perks and quirks! I recommend enjoying this day shopping, browsing, and treasure-hunting street murals.

Here’s the breakdown for day three in Burlington.

  • Did you know you can enjoy breakfast at the acclaimed Hotel Vermont (even without being a hotel guest)? It is a fee-based buffet breakfast at the Juniper but you can enjoy their outdoor patio while you dine.
  • Explore downtown Burlington and beyond! Shop for chocolate gifts at Lake Champlain Chocolates , try out natural wines at BIPOC-owned wine shop Wilder Wines , and don’t hesitate to strike a pose along Church Street Marketplace .
  • Experience Burlington’s beautiful sunset on Lake Champlain with dinner and drinks at Spot on the Dock . The cocktails are fun and creative, and the crowd really fills in the dockside lounge area.

Day 4 in Burlington, VT

Your last full day in Burlington deserves a bit of a hike with all that culinary goodness. Visit the states first State Park, a local eatery in North Burlington, and a brewery in South End. Thanks to Burlington’s quaint size, it isn’t as far away from each other as it sounds. 🙂

Here’s the breakdown for day four in Burlington.

  • Go hiking in Mt. Philo State Park and climb the mountain’s near 1,000-foot summit for picnic opportunities and epic views of the Adirondacks hovering over a glittering Lake Champlain under the sun.
  • Do not miss adding Cafe Mamajuana to your list of foodie musts! This amazing woman-owned restaurant opens at 4:00 pm until the food runs out so plan accordingly! The perfect lunch spot for Afro-Dominican food (as an Afro-Boricua, I approve of their pastelillos and maduros)
  • Relax and kick back at Zero Gravity and The Great Northern for delicious food and brews! If you want to keep the night going, be sure to catch some live music at Red Square on Church Street Marketplace.

Have an extra day in Burlington? There’s tons more you can do!

I recommend enjoying the arts scene in South End, indulging in gastronomic bliss at Hong’s Chinese Dumplings, and trying your darndest to get a reservation at James Beard nods, Honey Road and Hen of the Wood.

What to do in Burlington

burlington-vermont-street-art

Weekend in Burlington – Night 1

You’ll arrive for your weekend getaway in Vermont in the afternoon or evening. Check into your accommodation and get ready for a fabulous adventure. Check out our suggestions on great places to stay in Burlington , too.

Dinner at American Flatbread

There are dozens of great places to eat in Burlington, so feel free to go anywhere that catches your fancy, but I definitely recommend American Flatbread for a laidback atmosphere and a delicious meal.

The restaurant is located in the heart of downtown Burlington, just across from City Hall Park. You can look out over the park through the restaurant’s large windows as you enjoy the warmth from the wood-fired hearth—as well as the warmth from enjoying their locally brewed craft beer – one of our favorite picks for what to do in Burlington!

You will adore your artisanal flatbread featuring regional, local, and organic ingredients.

Catch a Performance

After dinner, the night is yours. This is what to do in Burlington for performance art lovers!

We recommend catching a show at the Flynn Theatre , a mainstay in entertainment. They host touring plays and musicals, orchestra performances, comedy, local productions, and more. If nothing is on at the Flynn, head just down the street to the Vermont Comedy Club , where you can laugh at improv, stand-up, and more.

They’ve hosted local comedians as well as more well-known names, including Marc Maron and Kevin James.

Weekend in Burlington – Day 2

muddy-waters-burlington-VT

Breakfast at Friendly Toast

Good morning! There are so many fantastic brunch spots and is what to do in Burlington if you’re a foodie! It’s hard to pick where you should go because there are so many great options.

But, The Friendly Toast is an awesome spot and because it’s a larger restaurant, you’ve got a good chance of getting a table without waiting too long. Did I mention how popular brunch is around here?

Morning at the Farmer’s Market

In the summer months, your next stop will be the Burlington Farmer’s Market. This bustling market is located in a large open space on Pine Street, a short distance from the main downtown area of Burlington.

I recommend walking from downtown to get to the farmer’s market, as parking can be tough and Pine Street gets crowded quite quickly.

The farmer’s market is quintessential Vermont . Local farmers present their vibrant, lush fruits and vegetables; artists and craftspeople show off their talent with unique and remarkable items. And of course, there is incredible food everywhere!

The farmer’s market has a great vibe, and you’ll find lots of families enjoying it, and a whole lot of adorable dogs (on leash), too. *Speaking of dogs, Burlington is very dog-friendly, so if you’ve got a beloved canine traveling companion, he would be very welcome in this town.

Explore Church Street and Downtown Burlington

burlington-vermont-street-art

After the farmer’s market, you will want to visit the epicenter of downtown activity and what to do in Burlington’if you’re looking for a prime spot for people-watching: Church Street.

This well-known spot in the city is a pedestrian-only thoroughfare that runs for several blocks from the top of Church Street (where, unsurprisingly, you’ll find a church) down to the bottom.

This busy area fills up, particularly on weekend days, with everything from buskers, street performers, and more. (You might even catch a glimpse of Bernie Sanders some days!)

There are dozens of shops to explore along Church Street. Most of them are small, independently-owned places, so it’s great to shop and support local businesses here.

You’ll also find tons of restaurants, which set up inviting patios along the street in the warmer months. Eating outdoors on Church Street is a great experience, but we’ll get to that later tonight!

A few spots of note on Church Street:

Ben & Jerry’s (yes THAT Ben and Jerry’s). If you’ve still got room after brunch and the farmer’s market, consider grabbing a scoop from this well-known ice cream shop’s original location.

The “Everyone Loves a Parade” mural. Catch this colorful painting on Leahy Way, just off of Church Street. It shows more than 400 years of Vermont history.

Coffee Break at Muddy Waters

You may have noticed that you’re doing a lot of eating and drinking on this weekend in Burlington itinerary. That’s because the Vermont culinary scene is second to none.

You can’t visit Burlington without enjoying as many local favorites as possible, so come hungry.

Pop in for an awesome cup of coffee (or a smoothie, cookie, or another treat) at Muddy Waters. This is one of the hippest coffee shops you’ll ever set foot in, and a Burlington institution, having been around for many years. The rustic, wood-heavy shop feels like entering a cozy hobbit hole.

You’ll definitely want to hang out for a bit and enjoy the ambiance.

Art & Beer in the South End

Now that you’ve been revived with your pick me up, it’s time for some more of what to do in Burlington for beer and art lovers; sipping and sampling.

You’ll venture down to the South End of Burlington, an up-and-coming spot that is known for its quirky art displays, inventive breweries, and urban industrial vibe.

This is a great section simply to explore and discover. Check out the world’s tallest file cabinet . Visit the S.P.A.C.E Gallery on Pine Street. And sip beers at some of the local breweries.

There’s even an awesome craft cidery in the area: Citizen Cider. This is one of my personal favorite places to hang out in all of Burlington.

Lunch at: Citizen Cider

Hungry? A great place for lunch is Citizen Cider. While you’re enjoying a tasty flight of local cider (make sure to sample The Dirty Mayor) you can enjoy excellent snacks.

The poutine is fabulous, and since it’s a semi-local dish (originally from Montreal) it’s a perfect thing to order while in Vermont.

Lake Champlain Activities

Here’s what to do in Burlington for those who like the great outdoors. Rent bikes and tackle the bike path OR go sailing or paddleboarding on Lake Champlain.

Now it’s time to burn some calories and take advantage of Vermont’s great outdoors. There’s plenty of that throughout the state, with all of our hiking, skiing, and camping, but even in and around Burlington you can fully enjoy the best of nature.

Depending on your preference, I suggest spending the remainder of your afternoon either biking down the waterfront bike path, or getting out on the water of Lake Champlain itself.

The bike path is one of the best things to do in the area. Lake Champlain is gorgeous, and this lakeside path follows the shoreline for miles. It’s an incredible place for biking, running, walking, and more. You can rent bikes right at the Burlington waterfront, too, so you can just grab your bike and get going.

Want to do a water-based activity? There are lots of options. You could take a scenic cruise in a big, slow ferry, rent a sailboat or kayak, or try something like stand up paddleboarding. There are also a couple of nice beaches in Burlington. The choices are endless.

Dinner at Leunig’s

After your active, busy day, you will unwind at one of Burlington’s top restaurants: Leunig’s. This French bistro inspired spot is one of Burlington’s oldest and most well-known eateries. As their website says, they offer “the Panache of Paris in the Center of Downtown Burlington.”

This place has a great, warm ambiance. It’s slightly on the upscale side, so it’s perfect for a romantic dinner date, but they also offer patio seating in the summer, which has a much more casual vibe. In any event, you will drool over the food they offer.

Live Music Downtown

If you’re still full of energy after today’s activities, you should take advantage of some of Burlington’s nightlife. As a college town, the bars and pubs are frequently busy throughout the week, but there are many places to enjoy a drink or two, and not all of them are filled with college kids!

Some places I recommend include:

  • The Whiskey Room at RiRa – for a classy touch right downtown
  • The Gryphon – great drink specials
  • The Three Needs – popular with college kids, but also just a great bar with the perfect laidback Vermont vibe
  • Half Lounge – a very small spot, but they often have fun live music
  • Radio Bean – great choice for live music, and with a true Burlington vibe

Weekend in Burlington – Day 3

green-mountains---a-beautiful-site-in-Vermont

It’s the final day of your weekend in Burlington itinerary. That went fast, didn’t it? Well, you’re always welcome back in this awesome city, because there are endless options of what to do in Burlington that will make you want to keep coming back!

Brunch at Skinny Pancake

Today starts with brunch at one of my absolute favorite spots: The Skinny Pancake! Remember when I said one of the top picks for what to do in Burlington for foodies is brunch? I wasn’t kidding.

This local chain is incredible. While they are all about their crepes, both sweet and savory, my favorite brunch item is actually their biscuits and gravy. It’s as good as any I’ve ever had in the south.

You’ll love the options on their menu, including lots of choices for vegetarians and vegans. And all their ingredients are fresh and locally-sourced.

PS: If you miss the Skinny Pancake during your weekend in Burlington, they do have a location at the Burlington airport, so you can grab some crepes before flying away!

Chill on the Waterfront

Brunch is located right near the waterfront, so you can take a walk along the lake after breakfast. There are large, open grassy areas here for chilling out on a blanket, or if you’re lucky enough to snag one of the swinging benches you can sit there and people watch.

Take your time to enjoy this area. It’s one of my favorite places in Burlington and a gorgeous spot to watch the sunset, too.

Head to the Mountains

If you don’t have to head out of town immediately, I recommend taking a quick side trip before leaving Vermont. Go on a hike!

Depending on which direction you’re going, you might consider the short, but rewarding hike up Mt. Philo. In just 45 minutes you can catch some spectacular views out over Lake Champlain, with the towering Adirondacks in the distance.

Got a little more time? Hit up Stowe, Waterbury, or the surrounding areas, which are right in the heart of the Green Mountains. You can make time to hike in this region (and you should) but even if you don’t go for a hike, this area is stunning simply to drive through on your way home.

If you have extra time during your weekend in Burlington, we recommend also making a trip to Montreal just across the border from the US to Canada. In just under two hours drive you can day trip or even extend and spend 3 days in Montreal too!

Also, check out our guide to the best day trips from Montreal , many of them are day trips from Burlington too!

You can also easily access the Adirondack Mountains, see our guide to the best things to do in Lake George and the best things to do in Lake Placid, two of the most popular places to visit not to mention the best towns in the Adirondacks to help plan your visit!

Visiting Bennington, Vermont? What to See, Do and Eat on Your Trip

Published September 6, 2024 at 10:00 a.m.

Bennington Battle Monument - DREAMSTIME

Bennington Battle Monument

If you want to visit Bennington, Vermont, here’s a suggested itinerary.

Note: Check websites to confirm business hours for the day you visit .

The Bennington Battle Monument

A 306-foot-tall obelisk greets travelers as they head into Bennington. The monument was completed in 1891 to commemorate the 1777 Battle of Bennington — fought in defense of the town's food and military supplies — which resulted in a pivotal victory for colonial forces during the Revolutionary War. The tallest man-made building in Vermont, it draws thousands of visitors each May through October to its observation deck, from which viewers can see three states. 15 Monument Cir., Old Bennington

This 1948 Silk City diner car feels unchanged by time — or by its new owner. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it," said John Getchell, who frequented the diner as a Bennington College student in the early '80s and bought it in December 2020. Pop a quarter in the tabletop selector of the antique Seeburg Select-O-Matic jukebox, rest your elbows on the deeply worn counter and order a sugared cake doughnut. The Blue Benn has been a local staple for 76 years for a reason. 314 North St., Bennington

Bennington Museum

In a stone building that was once a church, Bennington Museum has the largest collection of art and historical artifacts in southern Vermont — more than 40,000 objects in its permanent collection — including Bennington pottery and the world's largest public collection of paintings by American folk artist Grandma Moses. Rotating exhibitions in its 13 gallery spaces have included major 20th-century modernists, including Rockwell Kent and Helen Frankenthaler; one-night-only tattoo art events ; and student art shows. The museum’s goal is “to celebrate the creativity of Vermont in all its forms, from the 18th century to the present, and to inspire innovation in the future.” 75 Main St., Bennington

Taste the Craft

Village Garage Distillery in Bennington - CREDIT: GREG NESBIT

  • Village Garage Distillery in Bennington

The Southern Vermont HomeBrew Festival hits Depot Street each May, with local DIY-ers bringing their best sips to sample. The rest of the year, Bennington’s pros offer artisanal ales and sumptuous spirits. Start at Madison Brewing (428 Main St.), a brewpub that’s been in biz since the early 1990s. Next, hit Harvest Brewing (201 South St.), a nanobrewery that also roasts its own coffee. Little City Cider (139 Shields Dr.) often pairs its appley pours with live music, and Village Garage Distillery (107 Depot St.) offers tastings and tours of its Vermont-sourced spirits.

Take a Hike

The country-spanning Appalachian Trail and Vermont’s Long Trail run concurrently in southern Vermont, but long-distance hikers need not have all the fun. From a parking area five miles east of town on Route 9, the trails wind through the Green Mountain National Forest . Head south — starting with a steep climb — to Harmon Hill for expansive views, or head north into the Glastenbury Wilderness , where local legend points to Bigfoot sightings and a ghost town’s spooky happenings.

Shop the Main Strip

Bennington’s downtown has a 60-year tradition of Midnight Madness — an annual after-dark shopping extravaganza in late July. But the shops bustle year-round, with everything from antiques to xylophones. Grab a treat at the Village Chocolate Shoppe (471 Main St.); a novel at Vermont’s oldest independent bookstore, the Bennington Bookshop (109 South St.); a new hobby at the Gamer’s Grotto (457 Main St.); a musical instrument, rock tumbler or Vermont souvenir at Knapps (417 Main St.); or a houseplant and a coffee at hip café-shop W. Collective (198 North St.).

It doesn’t need to be a snowy evening to stop by the grave of Robert Frost, located in the Bennington Centre Cemetery at the historic white-steepled Old First Church (60 Monument Ave., Old Bennington). A short drive away, Bennington College runs the Robert Frost Stone House Museum (121 Route 7A, Shaftsbury; open May-October and by appointment November-April), where the “bard of New England'' lived from 1920 to 1929. There, Frost wrote "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening" — ironically on a hot June morning. From the museum, a two-mile trail winds through the woods to Lake Paran (Houghton St., North Bennington), which offers swimming and kayaking in summer and ice fishing and skating in winter.

Pro-Palestinian student group sues UVM over suspension. Here's what they're saying.

Portrait of Megan Stewart

A pro-Palestinian student group is suing the University of Vermont for alleged "egregious" civil rights violations after the college suspended the organization in the spring for its involvement with an on-campus encampment protesting the Hamas-Israel war .

UVM Students for Justice in Palestine (UVMSJP) also asked for a preliminary injunction requesting the university reinstate the organization until the courts can determine the constitutionality of the suspension, according to a Sept. 10 press release from the student group.

UVM spokesperson Adam White told the Free Press the university "cannot comment on pending litigation," but confirmed that Students for Justice in Palestine is on interim suspension .

"UVM values free expression as a vital component in our campus community, provided it is practiced in compliance with university policies," White said.

The lawsuit comes several months after pro-Palestinian UVM students staged a 10-day encampment on the Davis Center Green in solidarity with thousands of other college students nationwide who demonstrated against Israel's actions in Gaza. The encampment, which students erected on April 28 and voluntarily took down on May 8, peaked at almost 80 tents and hundreds of campers, the press release said.

"These demonstrators exercised their constitutional rights to show their solidarity with Palestinians and call for UVM to stop profiting from the genocide by divesting from Israel and its occupation of Palestine," the press release said. "While UVMSJP was not a formal sponsor of the encampment, it encouraged students to participate and use their voices to call for an end to the genocide and for UVM to divest from Israel."

On May 1, three days into the encampment, the university handed down its suspension on UVM Students for Justice in Palestine for allegedly violating six school policies, including occupying and erecting structures on college property without permission, according to the Sept. 10 press release.

Students say club suspension violates free speech, right to due process

The lawsuit argues that by suspending Students for Justice in Palestine as a campus club for occupying college property as a form of protest, UVM violated students' First Amendment rights, according to the organization's Sept. 10 press release. The statement also alleged that no other student clubs that participated in the encampment were suspended.

"UVMSJP has disputed these charges, and the University of Vermont has failed to provide evidence that UVMSJP engaged in any actions that are not protected by the First Amendment," the press release said.

Additionally, the statement accuses UVM of violating students' rights to due process when the administration suspended the club before initiating an investigative process and barred them from obtaining legal representation or appealing the suspension.

"The suspension has now remained in effect for over four months with no opportunity to appeal the sentence or the charges, let alone dispute any evidence," according to the press release. "UVM’s interim suspension policy allows for no procedures to contest the charges or sentence, and explicitly forbids students from being represented by a lawyer in the proceedings."

The press release also said that UVM has repeatedly turned down opportunities to meet with the club's legal council and faculty advisor about reversing the suspension.
