Review of the updated Away The Bigger Carry-On: Same great bag, revamped features

Summer Hull

Editor's Note

  • The Away The Carry-On and the Away The Bigger Carry-On bags offer high-end luggage looks and features.
  • Standout features include a handy mesh laundry compartment, fun colors, optional ejectable battery and 360-degree spinner wheels.
  • However, the bag does scuff, and there are some elements to be aware of before spending close to $300.

Since it debuted in 2015, Away has become a popular luggage company with bags that are often easy to spot in every corner of an airport, from airline lounges to baggage carousels. It's almost like the iPhone of carry-on bags — simple, stylish and priced in a way that walks that line of exclusivity while simultaneously feeling affordable enough for many frequent travelers. It likely doesn't hurt Away's popularity — and visibility — that a few times a year, it unveils seasonally refreshed colors for its bags, too.

Right now, you can purchase away bags for what is likely the best deal of the year with 20% off for Black Friday . This Black Friday sale drops the price to $236 for the Away The Bigger Carry-On and $220 for the Away The Carry-On . And if someone with an Away bag refers you, that can drop the price an additional 20% as those discounts stack.

Personally, my family now has five Away bags: two child-size bags (that are no longer available) and one adult carry-on size from a limited-edition collection inspired by the northern lights as well as two of the more traditional colors and styles. The northern lights Away bag, which was beautiful when it first arrived at my door, didn't hold up very well.

But the Away The Bigger Carry-On in the coast color that Away provided for product testing a year ago and, more recently, the revamped design in olive, have both held up wonderfully overall.

Now that I've flown more than a dozen flights with the revamped Away The Carry-On in olive and spent a year and about 100,000 miles with the previous version in coast, I'm here to share my review of the Away The Bigger Carry-On bags. I'll also talk about some differences between the most recently released version and previous iterations.

What you should look for in a carry-on bag

The best carry-on bags have a few things in common. Notably, they have a sturdy handle and are easy to roll — not only on smooth airport surfaces but also on some slightly imperfect surfaces. Sometimes, taking that train to the city center and walking the rest of the way to the hotel while pulling your bag is the best course of action, and your bag needs to be able to handle that journey.

Ideally, carry-on luggage has some compartments to help keep your belongings separated and make the act of physically closing and opening the bag a bit easier. No one wants all the items that were so carefully packed exploding everywhere, thanks to gravity during the zipping and unzipping process.

The best carry-on bags don't waste a ton of weight on the bag itself and fit in airline overhead bins, pushing right up to that maximum limit allowed so you have as much packing space as possible. They're also built to withstand the harsh realities of frequently flying without becoming the ugly duckling at the baggage carousel shortly after buying them.

Why we like Away's The Bigger Carry-On

Spoiler alert: After a year of using Away The Carry-On (often instead of my beloved Rimowa), I'm a fan.

While I still love my Rimowa carry-on bags that I've used for almost a decade, there is no question that the Away bag is more functional in a few ways — which is why it is now the primary bag in my rotation.

The mesh, zippered laundry compartment on one side of the bag is one of my favorite components, as it is so useful for keeping things organized and in place. The other side of the bag can then be used for packing cubes and the like, making it easy to pack, unpack and keep everything together.

In fact, the updated carry-on model released in the summer of 2023 has even more pockets and sturdier zips. It also has redesigned handles that are easier to grip and refreshed 360-degree spinner wheels.

The zippers themselves are strong and easy to move, even when you may have slightly overpacked and are leaning all your weight on the top of the suitcase to get it to close while you zip it up. I absolutely do this all the time and am continually impressed at how much I can cram in there.

The 360-degree spinner wheels have made moving through the airport, along sidewalks and more basically a dream.

As someone who avoids checking a bag as much as possible, I'm particularly fond of the slightly larger size of Away's standard carry-on bag.

The Bigger Carry-On allows you to add an extra set or two of clothes or one more pair of shoes without drifting into that "must check a bag" situation. We'll get more into the exact dimensions in a bit, but this little extra room makes a noticeable difference when packing.

Things to know about The Bigger Carry-On from Away

While this bag can be thrown in and out of a cab and dragged off a carousel without a worry in terms of functionality, be prepared for some scratches on the shell. (If you really want to see the durability in action, jump to the three-minute mark of the "Kids Away Luggage review video" at the end of this article to see how we tried to destroy that bag.)

Even with normal wear and tear, scuffs can absolutely be seen on the matte material. I found some on my test bag after just the first few flights.

Additionally, I've discovered that this coast color is quite popular, as I've been in a few situations now where multiple people have had the exact same bag.

Without something clearly identifying the bag as yours, you're risking bag mix-ups. Consider getting some kind of special identifier (such as a colorful luggage tag) and toss an Apple AirTag in for good measure, just in case. Or, choose a non-traditional or limited-edition color that fewer people will have.

One thing that's no longer an option on the Away carry-on bags is the removable battery, which I think is a good thing as I get stopped frequently when boarding flights to ensure mine is removed on the bags we have that still have that slot. The bag we got over the summer of 2023 does not have that battery slot, which I consider an improvement.

How Away's carry-on measures up

Regularly priced starting at $295, the Away The Bigger Carry-On from Away is currently available in 12 colors (though a few are temporarily sold out or are limited-edition options) and is sized to fit in the overhead bins on most airlines.

Some of the Away bag's features include:

  • Durable polycarbonate shell
  • Leather detailing, including a black leather luggage tag
  • TSA-approved combination lock for extra safety
  • 360-degree spinner wheels that ensure a smooth ride
  • Interior compression system
  • Hidden laundry bag to keep dirty clothes separate
  • Underside grab handle (new to the 2023 model)

The Bigger Carry-On that I've been trying out has the following measurements:

  • Exterior: 22.7 inches by 15.4 inches by 9.6 inches
  • Interior: 20.9 inches by 15 inches by 7.9 inches
  • Weight: 7.4 pounds
  • Capacity: 47.9 liters

For reference, Delta Air Lines , American Airlines and United Airlines all have posted maximum carry-on sizes of 22 inches by 14 inches by 9 inches, which is technically a hair smaller than this bag on all sides.

In practice, on most flights, a bag that is a fraction of an inch over will still fit in the sizer and in the overhead bin. Still, know that there is a possibility that you may need to gate-check your bag .

Southwest Airlines currently has a maximum carry-on size of 24 inches by 16 inches by 10 inches, which means this larger carry-on does officially comply with that carrier's baggage dimension limits.

Away The Carry-On vs. Away The Bigger Carry-On

The two main differences between the Away The Carry-On and the Away The Bigger Carry-On are price and size.

The standard Away carry-on bag is usually about $20 cheaper than the Bigger version, at $275 instead of $295 (prices vary by color and exact model). Additionally, the traditional Away The Carry-On measures 21.7 inches by 14.4 inches by 9 inches, meaning it is smaller than the maximum carry-on size requirements for all major U.S. airlines, unlike the Bigger version. In the U.S., that difference isn't likely to cause issues most of the time, though it may be problematic when flying carriers internationally.

As someone who stuffs their carry-on to the brim, the additional capacity in The Bigger Carry-On is worth it.

But if you don't find yourself needing every square inch in your carry-on, then getting The Carry-On will save you a few dollars and be sure to keep you within the posted airline carry-on size limits.

Overall impression

Even with the scuff marks that just happen over time, my Away suitcases still look pretty good.

I love the more voluminous Bigger version. I'm also a sucker for the zippered side of the bag that makes organizing — especially in conjunction with packing cubes — a cinch. And in perhaps the best test of all, my kids will pretty much only pull the Away bags on the rare occasion that some of our other bags are in the mix at the airport because they roll so much easier than all of our other luggage brands.

The new version that came out in 2023 is even better, especially with that handy spot to grip when pulling in or out of the overhead bins.

We're pretty much a fully Away bag family at this point, as they are the right balance of quality, style, durability and price. I give it a big thumbs up if you are in the market for a new carry-on bag this year.

Away Luggage Review: Are the Popular Carry-Ons Worth the Hype?

What I thought of the Away Carry-On

Should you buy away carry-on luggage, other types of away suitcases, more away travel products we like.

As an analyst in the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab, I have personally tested dozens of travel products, from carry-on luggage and smart suitcases to hardside luggage and travel backpacks . After putting the Away carry-on through our rigorous Lab evaluations — which include using specialized equipment to analyze scratch and water resistance, as well as an obstacle course to measure wheel performance and maneuverability — I was blown away by this bag for being impressively lightweight, scratch resistant, easy to maneuver and fitting everything in our packing tests. In fact, it landed the top spot for carry-on luggage in our roundup of the best luggage brands of 2024 .

The bottom line: Away luggage is absolutely worth investing in.

What is Away luggage?

Away is a travel gear brand that offers a variety of travel accessories, including checked suitcases , backpacks , packing cubes and weekender bags . The brand originally went viral for its carry-on featuring a removable battery that can charge your phone on the go, but Away has since stopped offering battery packs with its suitcases as most people already own portable chargers .

Away's Carry-On and Bigger Carry-On are the brand's two most popular items — they are made from the same materials and have the same features but in two different sizes. In the brand's most recent update to its luggage line, the standard Carry-On now has a slightly larger packing capacity and is a bit heavier than the previous model. I put the new standard Carry-On to the test in the Textiles Lab and I used the Bigger Carry-On during a recent vacation to find out if Away luggage is actually worth buying.

When it comes to luggage material, polycarbonate reigns supreme over other hardside materials like plastics. Away carry-ons are made with polycarbonate, which is extremely durable and more lightweight than metals like aluminum.

Polycarbonate bags typically ace our drop tests, which involve GH pros filling a suitcase with a set weight and releasing the luggage from a 3-foot height. We repeat this test at various angles and note any damages and imperfections. As suspected, after I dropped it from different angles using our drop tester, the Away carry-on showed no dents, damages or changes in appearance .

Image no longer available

During testing, we also use a wire to scratch the surface of the suitcase and then rate any scuffs or marks left behind. Compared to other suitcases, Away's carry-on aced our scratch-resistance testing, showing very minimal scuffs and remaining in great condition . Because marks and scuffs are inevitable on hardside luggage, the suitcases also come with a magic eraser sponge, so you can easily buff the outside of your suitcase when scuffs appear to keep your luggage looking fresh trip after trip.

I gave Away's handles lower comfort scores, compared to the other carry-ons I tested. They felt a bit wobbly and less sturdy than other carry-on handles, and they don't offer any padding at the grip. The newest iteration of the brand's carry-on luggage features an additional underside grab handle near the wheels to help make it easier to stow and retrieve from an overhead bin.

The 360º wheels rolled easily over a variety of different surfaces when I was at the airport, including linoleum, tile and carpet. Testers agreed, finding this suitcase easy to maneuver through our obstacle course and over different floorings.

A carry-on absolutely has to hold everything you need for your vacation. Away carry-ons have massive interiors , clocking in at 39.8L for the Carry-On and 47.9L for the Bigger Carry-On. When you open the suitcase, there's equal packing space on both sides. One side is a large zippered compartment, and the other is open with compression straps to keep everything in place. There are also zippered pockets for smaller items, so nothing gets lost at the bottom of your suitcase. For ultimate organization, pair the suitcase with the brand's mesh packing cubes , which excelled in our recent packing cubes test and fit perfectly in the carry-on.

an empty away carry on laid open flat on a white table, good housekeeping's luggage review

I was impressed with just how much I could fit in the Bigger Carry-On — enough for a whole week's vacation without needing a checked bag. It was easy to keep all my belongings organized, and I especially loved the included laundry bag that kept my dirty clothes separate. This bag came with a stylish leather luggage tag in a similar color to the suitcase that keeps my contact info accessible if my luggage gets lost. (Remember not to put your home address on your luggage tag and instead just your email address or phone number.) Away luggage also features TSA-compliant locks to keep your belongings protected.

Starting at $275 for the Carry-On, Away luggage isn't cheap. But for the cost, you get a sleek suitcase made with durable high-quality materials and a well-organized interior for easy packing. At a similar price to our other top-tested luggage brands, like TravelPro and Samsonite , Away carry-ons aren't the most expensive suitcases I've tested either. (Both Tumi and Rimowa carry-ons start at $650, for example.) The brand also boasts an impressive 100-day return period on unused products, so you have lots of time to decide if it's the right fit for you. Note that personalized products and final sale items are not eligible for returns or exchanges.

If you love its chic appearance and durable polycarbonate shell, Away luggage can be worth the investment. But if you're ultimately in the market for something more affordable, I suggest checking out our top-tested picks from Target and Amazon Basics .

preview for How to pack 20 outfits in one hand-luggage suitcase

Besides the famous carry-ons, the brand offers a few other styles of suitcases. There are checked sizes of the polycarbonate luggage as well as aluminum styles. The checked bags are made with the same durable polycarbonate material as the carry-ons and match in appearance if you're looking to create a stylish set.

I haven't yet tested Away's aluminum carry-ons , but I am wary of the higher price tag (starting at $675) and additional weight (10.1 lbs compared to 7.5 lbs for the polycarbonate version). Beyond that, it does feature an overall similar design with 360° wheels and a telescopic handle.

Away also offers Flex styles of its polycarbonate suitcases. These suitcases expand for an additional 2.25" of space to fit all the extra goodies you bought on vacation. However, when the suitcase is fully expanded, it no longer works as carry-on luggage and must be checked. Note that this style has a higher price tag than the brand's traditional polycarbonate carry-ons.

The 7 Away Luggage Pieces We Recommend Most

I distinctly remember the moment I first laid my eyes on an Away suitcase . One of my coworkers had been talking nonstop about her new carry-on, and before heading out of town one day, she rolled the hard-shell spinner into the office. Like a proud new homeowner, she took our team on a tour through its features, leaving me mesmerized by its built-in compression straps and portable battery pack, as well as its stylish and sturdy design.

Though awestruck, I didn't immediately purchase my own; I was never one to invest in baggage—and the introductory price—$225 when it first hit the market—was beyond what I thought luggage was worth at the time. Following an ill-fated journey to Australia , in which I found my checked bag split open on the baggage carousel, the zipper having burst after I overstuffed it, I knew it was time to upgrade.

My first Away bag was The Bigger Carry-On , and despite having previously thought of luggage as glorified boxes to transport my travel essentials, I was immediately obsessed. For an overpacker, I was surprised how much I could stuff into the suitcase. Constantly slipping in “just one more” thing in, the zipper always held tight and the shell showed no signs of bulging. While on the go, the light glide of the wheels could tackle any surface, even cobblestone streets. Plus, the sleek, minimalist design just jived with me.

A suitecase.

Shown in green

Being the space hog I am, I later upgraded to The Bigger Carry-On Flex , which added an extra 2.25 inches of expansion, meaning even I was able to go on a two-week trip with just a carry-on . As much as I’ve banged it around and overstuffed it, it’s remained impervious to my abuse.

These days, I often see other brands trying to mimic Away's features—a sign of just how much it’s changed the luggage industry. What makes it all the more surprising is that Away is still a relatively new company, having roared onto the market in 2015, with one simple goal: understanding travelers.

“From the beginning, we set out to expand the conversation around travel, solving real world travel pain points by keeping an incredibly close pulse on our customer’s needs,” Away’s chief marketing officer Carla Dunham says. “We dissected and developed a solution to all of the common headaches of travel while revolutionizing what it meant to be a travel brand.”

Founded by two female former Warby Parker executives, including Jen Rubio, who still serves as the CEO, Away was sparked by her own broken baggage disaster, noticing there was a hole in the market for luggage that was fun and functional.

After talking to hundreds of travelers, the initial carry-on was designed to meet all the most common needs—a lighter and stronger hard-side with an impact-resistant polycarbonate shell that moved easily with premium 360-degree wheels, with thoughtful features like a snap-in mesh laundry bag to keep clean to separate clean and dirty laundry, and a removable battery pack to eliminate the fight for the airport outlets.

The result wasn’t just success—the brand quickly entered the zeitgeist. Stars from Margot Robbie to Mandy Moore were spotted toting them , and Meghan Markle is believed to have given 17 Away bags as party favors at her baby shower. They've turned up on screen, too. Dunham says her favorite pop culture moment was when Portia tossed her Away away in The White Lotus. “It seemed so natural that she had an Away suitcase and that spoke to the brand’s unique position in culture and continued relevance.”

Since launch, the price points for the standard editions—which now start at $315 for The Carry-On and go up to $475 for the newly introduced The Trunk —have gone up, and are a notch above what casual or new travelers may be used to paying, but are still fairly reasonably priced for the suitcases' quality.

The brand has ventured into other travel accessories since launch, too, with both hits ( packing cubes ) and misses (travel pillows, now discontinued)—and added an outdoor collection, F.A.R., last year . It continues to evolve based on the needs of the moment. With the growing number of power outlets available on flights and around airport terminals these days, Away just phased out its distinctive built-in battery charger from its core product last month, as part of its first major refresh of its original classics line .

“Each update is incredibly intentional—from the improved features like a redesigned zipper shape, additional interior organization, and an updated trolley system, to the fresh color palette and new gloss finish, underscores how we obsess over every detail to make the journey smoother for our customers,” Dunham says.

As the brand continues to evolve, more updates and new products are sure to come, but some of the products remain staples. Here, we round up the Condé Nast Traveler team’s most-used Away bags and accessories.

This article is part of Condé Nast Traveler' s first-ever Luggage Week , for which dozens of suitcases, backpacks, and weekender bags were road-tested by our editors.

Weight: 7.9 lbs. Dimensions: 23" x 15" x 10" Capacity: 47.9L

A recent convert from a larger suitcase that often had to be checked, editorial assistant Jessica Chapel says the refreshed Bigger Carry-On suitcase “does wonders,” especially since she can fit almost as much in this more compact hardside spinner, which she recently took on a five-day trip with plenty of room to spare. She’s already traveled with the 7.9-pound bag by plane, bus, and car, and put it to the test when delays allowed her only 15 minutes to get between gates. She swiftly pulled the bag out of the overhead compartment thanks to “the perfect mix of convenient handle placements and the texture of the luggage,” put the bag on top of her head—an unconventional carrying method, to be sure—and sailed through the crowd. “It's the little things, including the unique placement of the luggage's underside handle—with a small dash of adrenaline—that certainly does the trick for easy access without any shuffle, which is exactly what's needed in an airport rush,” Chapel says. (She made her connecting flight in the knick of time.)

Also notable, she says: the interior lining, mesh, and drawstring laundry for dirty clothes (no longer snapped, as part of the refresh), are made of recycled polyester. Deputy global editorial director Jesse Ashlock concurs, having depended on the classic version for more than three years now, calling it a “solid workhorse polycarbonate bag that suits a lot of different trip styles.” I recently tried the updated version of The Bigger Carry-On, and was able to pack enough for a weeklong California getaway; I am especially loving the additional inner pockets to keep my essentials more organized.

Weight: 10.4 lbs. Dimensions: 26" x 19" x 11" Capacity: 68.8L

During a two-week car trip to Rhode Island and Martha’s Vineyard, destinations editorial assistant Charlie Hobbs brought along the “perfectly light” 10.4-pound medium check-in sized hardside, able to fit enough in to not have to do laundry the entire getaway. The interior of the upgraded version—which he found “unassuming”—includes more storage pockets: The compression flap, which used to have just one large zipper mesh compartment, is now divided into two zippered sections on one side with an added large pocket on the backside. Additionally, the zipper closure for the top half of the suitcase now has a zippered pocket on it. He also noticed what’s perhaps the most commonly called-out downfall of Away’s hardsides: “Despite only ever being in the car, this bag is already quite scuffed up,” he said. (When I was in Estonia with two other travel writers last month, looking at our three Away bags, we commented the same thing.) Each suitcase does come with Away's own version of a Magic Eraser that helps remove light scuffs, though a bit of elbow grease might be needed to get them out. That said, Hobbs found the 360-degree wheels rolled “perfectly well” and appreciated the new ergonomic curved zippers. Like Chapel, he found the luggage easy to lift up in a bind, when he had to put it on the roof of a Toyota for a ferry ride, noting it was easy to sling it up, “thanks to the side handles.”

Weight: 8.15 lbs. Dimensions: 22" x 14" x 9" (not expanded) Capacity: 39.8L

“The joy of this luggage is its simplicity,” global director of audience development Lara Kramer says. At 8.15 pounds, this model has the expandable 2.25-inches of zipper space going from 39.8 liter capacity to 46.7 liters, providing “the luxury of expanding to add more room if needed,” she adds. She and her husband both use it as their carry-on suitcase—in part because it moves so well, “gliding smoothly and easily with its 360-degree spinner wheels.” Otherwise, she finds the other features “pretty straightforward,” also noting the issue of the exterior scuffing “very easily,” especially noticeable on a dark suitcase. “They're generally surface scuffs and not hard to buff out, but against the black color, it can look pretty jarring,” she adds. That said, Kramer says, “I still truly love this piece and it has continued to hold up despite many uses.”

Weight: 2.45 lbs. Dimensions: 12" x 6" x 18" Capacity: 20L

Simplicity comes first with this water-resistant nylon backpack, available in five subtle monochromatic shades, that CNT editors have called “functional” with “a classic look that you won’t tire of.” As a freelancer whose backpack is her office, that timeless look also means the backpack strikes the right balance of being professional (I’ve toted it to business meetings and events), travel-friendly (I’ve also taken it on day trips to the Jersey Shore and Long Island), and casual (it’s also doubled as my exercise bag for spin class). When I got caught in the rain at the US Open in New York, the raindrops wicked right off, and the bag's contents stayed dry. But my two favorite magic tricks of this bag are the extended clamshell-style zipper, which opens the main compartment and makes it just as easy to take something out of the bottom as the top, and the bag's weight distribution. Whether it’s the padded straps or the mesh back panel, it somehow makes the contents feel lighter—I’ve stopped at least twice to make sure my laptop was actually inside the 15-inch sleeve. Plus, the thoughtful number of pockets are great for storing little essentials.

away travel where to buy

Weight: 1.74 lbs. Dimensions: 19" x 13" x 8" Capacity: 26L

When it comes to travel backpacks, I’m far pickier than with luggage. I need an uber-spacious main compartment and every zipper and pocket needs to be just in place—so much so that I used the same ratty old Vans Off the Wall one for well over a decade. While I recently tested out a new Tumi backpack, I never liked the placements of its pockets. Enter the F.A.R. Backpack 26L. The main compartment is deep and wide open, yet still has a slip pocket in the back for my laptop. Hidden behind it is another zippered compartment that fits a 15-inch device. The front pocket is surprisingly roomy too, with tons of organizational pockets—plus, there are two water bottle side pockets, each able to hold a 32-ounce container. Add to that the fact the entire bag is only 1.74 pounds and it still fits under the seat in front of me on planes.

While the Everywhere Zip may be sufficient for day trips, personally, I do need the space of the 26-liter bag to fit my basic travel essentials for anything that includes an overnight stay. Plus the shell is tougher for more rugged travels, whether it's outdoor adventures or multi-stop itineraries, where it may be subject to more use. That said, I am still learning to trust mine completely. On two occasions, the zipper has opened on its own and I didn't realize until contents spilled out. But both times were when I was leaving hotels in a rush, so it's possible I didn't properly zip it.

Dimensions: Small: 10" x 4" x 8" Medium slim: 10" x 4" x 4" Medium wide: 13" x 4" x 10" Large: 13" x 4" x 7"

Before I tried Away’s packing cubes, I was a skeptic of the travel accessory as a whole. Other cubes I had seen were either bulky, or felt rough, cheap, and pointless. Admittedly, when I first saw this innocuous set from Away, I was still doubtful. But as it turns out, this set of four nylon water-resistant zip bags with one mesh side are as subtle as they are useful. In the smallest one, I’m able to stuff in all my “just in case” accessories—a foldable running cap, beanie, scarf, gloves, and swimsuit, and tuck it into a teeny corner of the suitcase. The medium slim is perfect for organizing my underwear, packing them vertically, Marie Kondo–style , while the medium wide fits my bras, tanks, and socks. The final one, the large slim, rotates between storing pairs of shoes or other bulky items. They all fit together like Legos in my suitcase, weighing a combined 0.7 pounds—well worth it for keeping me organized on the go.

When I first got this bag, I didn’t think I’d ever use it. It wasn’t quite a dry sack, it wasn’t quite a travel pouch. It was an in-between hybrid that I saw no practical use for. But then one day when I was running out the door, holding too many chargers in my hands, I tossed them in there—and it’s become my go-to tech accessories bag, traveling with me both on trips and in my everyday life. Made of water-resistant recycled ripstop nylon, it repels accidental spills (mostly coffee, in my case), but is so thin and sturdy that it doesn’t take up much space. The recycled nylon handle also makes it easy to grab when I’m trying to fish it out of my bag. Use it for chargers and cords, toiletries, or any other odds and ends, and know that there are small and large versions if you want a full set.

The Roomy Duffel Bag I’ve Taken All Over the World Makes a Better Carry-on Than a Suitcase

Travelers can make use of every single inch of the bag thanks to its Mary Poppins-esque capaciousness.

away travel where to buy

Travel + Leisure / Tyler Roeland

Before I begin packing for any trip, I take a moment to think about my entire itinerary (or lack thereof), strategizing what to bring for the most seamless travel experience. I consider which comfortable shoes make the most sense for my adventures, whether or not I’m bringing my laptop (I likely am), and, of course, the bag that will transport it all. While I’ve tried out countless carry-ons and personal items — you name it: backpacks, duffels, totes, etc. — one that I reach for time and time again is Away’s The Everywhere Bag .

I’ve been a fan of editor-loved brand Away ever since I received their signature lightweight Carry-On Suitcase as a birthday gift a few years back. From there, I quickly realized that this brand lives up to the hype. So when I had the chance to sample The Everywhere Bag shortly thereafter, I sprung at the opportunity, and it’s been a staple for my travels ever since.

I first tested out the bag on a cross-country flight to Seattle. When I unzipped the sturdy (almost industrial-feeling) metal zipper, I was immediately struck by its spaciousness. Although it’s compact, The Everywhere Bag makes use of every single inch. There’s a large zippered compartment to secure valuables, a padded sleeve for my laptop with a strap that secures the section, and four additional internal pockets to hold any other essentials. Even when each of those areas are full, there’s still plenty of space in the center to hold a toiletry case, makeup bag, extra set of clothes, and more. There’s even a large zippered outside pocket for bonus storage.

In addition to the Mary Poppins-esque capaciousness of this bag, I continue to be impressed by how seamless it is to pack. Because it’s constructed with thick and sturdy water-resistant nylon fabric, The Everywhere Bag almost holds its form without anything inside. Plus, the extra-long zipper allows you to fully open the bag and see all its contents simultaneously. Because of this, I’ve found it’s not only a breeze to neatly place all of your essentials within the walls of the duffel bag, but it’s also easy to remove anything you need mid-travel without ruffling through the entire pack — seriously, there’s nothing my annoying than having your personal item become a jumbled mess in between takeoff and touchdown.

This durable travel bag makes for the ideal personal item for longer journeys, or overnight bag for shorter trips (I’ve even managed to get a whole weekend’s worth of clothes to fit). I've been using the smallest of Away’s Everywhere Bag collection; it measures 16.3 inches by 10.2 inches by 7.3 inches and there are two other sizes to choose from: the Medium Everywhere Bag and Large Everywhere Bag , which are suited for up to two days of travel and four days, respectively.

Oh, and did I mention it looks incredibly sleek and stylish? It balances striking leather accents with neutral-hued nylon. I personally own the green colorway — which pairs beautifully with my blue coast-colored carry-on — and I always feel put-together when I don this bag. It also comes in black , navy , coast , and limited-edition sand . Plus, as with most Away products, you can personalize the bag with your initials for an additional $35.

Other noteworthy features worth mentioning: a sleek trolley sleeve that fits with most suitcases, a removable shoulder strap, and a detachable key clip. Still not convinced that you need this bag? Wait until you read the reviews it's earned from Away customers. One shopper wrote, "I recently traveled with it on a domestic flight and it was so convenient to place the bag under the seat." They also noted, "The best part of the bag is the zippers that go down to the lower portion of the bag, which when opened gives easy access and visibility to all the contents.”

Another buyer said, “I have been searching for the perfect carry-on bag that would serve as more than a purse, but smaller than a carry-on suitcase. This is perfect for my needs.” And, a final reviewer added, "It’s very handy for all my carry-on needs. It was very roomy and held all my extra purchases I made at the airport…I love the fact that it also fits nicely in the overhead bin or under the seat on the aircraft."

After bringing the Away Everywhere Bag on countless trips, I can confidently attest to its high-quality design and durability. Despite stuffing this bag to the brim, tossing it recklessly in the overhead bin, and toting it all over the world, it quite literally looks exactly the same as it did out of the box. The name says it all, you can truly take this bag anywhere and everywhere.

Give it a try on your next trip, or keep scrolling to explore the other spacious, traveler-loved duffel bags that will make excellent companions on your adventure.

About Away

Away Luggage Review

Traveling has been a priority of mine since I was young. Whether it’s experiencing a new place, seeing friends abroad, or going somewhere for the sake of going…sometimes, it just feels good to get away.

Before I knew what an ideal suitcase was, I lugged around an old relic or a giant duffel bag—without wheels. Away designs suitcases that just make sense. Addressing real-life travel problems (like gate sprints and too many bags), its line of sleek, elegant luggage is nothing short of chic.

Made with durable materials in colors to match your personal style and needs, a quick, smooth zip will reveal the travel-friendly innovations your jet-setting dreams are made of. With a social community of 700K+ And features in Forbes and CNN , it seems I’m not the only one to think so either.

When it comes to travel, I’ve learned that luggage is one part of the journey I shouldn’t mess around with. So in this Away luggage review, I’ll take a close look at the brand and its products to see if they’re really worth the buy.

Why You Should Trust Us

Our mission is to help you make better, more informed purchase decisions.

Overview Of Away

Away Luggage Review

Away began as most brilliant ideas do: out of necessity. After more than one travel woe, founders Stephanie Korey and Jennifer Rubio launched the brand in 2015 to put an end to easily avoided frustrations when traveling.

The pair believe that luggage is the “unsung hero of travel,” and I couldn’t agree more. I know the irritation that arises from a zipper that just won’t zip, a wheel that doesn’t track, and handles that just up and fall off. Little things like this make traveling stressful when it doesn’t need to be.

When launching their brand, Korey and Rubio decided to keep it digital. With an aim to make things easy for shoppers and keep costs as low as they could, they wanted to do things differently from other luggage companies that either pushed too-expensive bags or ones that were too low-quality.

Meeting somewhere in the middle, Away suitcases are equipped with all of the thoughtful details the duo could dream up—like a built-in battery to charge your phone. Their mission? To help you “get more out of every trip to come.” I appreciate that, and I’m also a personal fan of how the two perceive the concept of luggage: a mobile home and closet when you’re on the road.

And while they help to bring you more peace when traveling, Away also partners with Peace Direct, a non-profit that helps reduce conflict around the globe. As if I wasn’t in love with this brand already.

Pros & Cons

Away Luggage Review

If you don’t want to read me gush about my love for this company, maybe it’s time to turn away from this Away luggage review. Want to learn more about its premium quality and travel-friendly designs? By all means, read on.

To kickstart this Away luggage review, let’s first take a look at the brand’s pros and cons:

  • Sturdy design: Away suitcases are made with durable materials that can withstand the wear and tear of travel.
  • Spacious interiors: Away carry-ons have massive interiors with equal packing space on both sides.
  • Smooth multi-directional spinner wheels: The wheels make it easy to navigate through tight spaces, and they are also very quiet.
  • High customer satisfaction: Away luggage has received high ratings from customers, with an average of 4.9/5 stars based on thousands of reviews.
  • Innovative accessories: Away offers a variety of travel accessories such as packing cubes and toiletry bags that make staying organized on your travels effortless.
  • Trendy design: Away luggage has an elegant design that is both modern and stylish, making it easy to match your travel accessories with your style and vibe.
  • Price: Away luggage is on the expensive side compared to other luggage brands, with some suitcases costing hundreds of dollars.
  • Limited color options: While Away luggage is known for its trendy designs, the brand offers a limited number of color options, which may not appeal to everyone’s taste.

While I won’t take you through every product the brand makes, in this Away luggage review, I’ll give you the details of some of their bestsellers to show you what their smart suitcases are all about.

Away Luggage Review

Away Luggage offers various travel products, including checked suitcases, backpacks, packing cubes, and duffels. One of the brand’s most popular products is the carry-on suitcase, which comes with several features.

One notable feature of the Away carry-on is the removable battery that can charge your phone on the go . The battery easily pops out of the suitcase, so you can hold onto it when boarding a plane, and it charges quickly and keeps a charge for a long time.

Away carry-ons are made with polycarbonate , a durable material that typically performs well in drop tests and is more lightweight than metals like aluminum.

The carry-ons have massive interiors with equal packing space on both sides and a large zippered compartment on one side and an open area with compression straps on the other side.

Away luggage is designed to be sleek and stylis h, with a range of colors and designs to choose from. The brand also offers other styles of suitcases, including checked sizes of polycarbonate luggage as well as aluminum styles.

In addition to suitcases, Away offers a range of travel products such as the Everywhere Bag , which has received a high rating from customers.

Overall, Away Luggage is known for its durable materials, innovative features, and stylish designs, making it a popular choice among travelers. However, it is important to note that the luggage can be pricey compared to other top-tested luggage brands.

Away luggage is known for its durability and high-quality materials . The brand thoughtfully designs its travel products to transform modern travel and uses only the most durable materials in their designs.

Away’s luggage shells are made of polycarbonate , a lightweight and durable material that can withstand impact and resist scratches. The brand also uses aluminum for the Carry-On Aluminum Edition , which adds an extra layer of strength and security to the suitcase.

For the interiors of their suitcases, Away uses a water-resistant nylon material that is easy to clean and maintain. The brand also offers removable and washable laundry bags that help keep your clothes separate and organized during travel.

Away also offers other travel products, such as The Everywhere Bag , which comes in two styles and colors: a water-resistant blue nylon and a durable pink leather style.

Overall, Away uses polycarbonate, aluminum, and water-resistant nylon in their luggage designs, among other materials for various travel products. These materials help ensure that their products are durable, long-lasting, and easy to use during travel.

8 Best-Selling Away Products

Away the large.

Away Suitcase Review

First up, the limited edition Chalet Collection. Once in a while, you’re on the chairlift and conversation stops mid-sentence because someone is carving down the slopes in a retro ski suit.

You point it out, laugh about it, but secretly, you admire the look and wish that you could pull it off yourself. And to be clear here, when I say you, I really mean me.

This suitcase is that retro ski suit. Away’s limited edition Chalet Collection harnesses the energy of this eye-catching look. The Large comes in a variety of bold colors and stripes equipped with a custom matching luggage tag.

There’s no fear of losing this bright bag on the luggage belt when you arrive in Aspen to hit the slopes. As Away’s biggest suitcase, if you’re one to overpack, I think this one is a great pick. My favorite part? Despite how large it is, it’s deceptively lightweight .

Made from protective polycarbonate , this suitcase’s shell keeps your belongings safe and sound. But that’s not the only reason I think it’s a winner. With an interior compression system and removable laundry bag, traveling in style is all that much easier.

Enjoy airport-friendly features like 360-degree spinning wheels and multiple handles to help manage whatever you’ve piled it up with inside. Get The Large for $348 .

Away Suitcase Review

If you’re not into the bold colors of the Chalet Collection, I get it. Away The Large also comes in a range of neutral darks and a few brighter colors like pink and blue for the same price.

If you really want to splurge on your luggage, and honestly look like the flyest person in the airport, check out The Large – Aluminum Edition :

Away The Large – Aluminum Edition Review

You can literally walk around with a suitcase that looks like it’s made of gold, rose gold, or other precious metals. I like the sound of that.

All its features are the same as the Chalet collection, the only difference is the aluminum shell . Be prepared to shell out a little more for this shell though, since The Large in aluminum costs $629 . And while it’s a little pricey… it’s also super pretty.

Away x Serena Williams – The Medium

Away x Serena Williams - The Medium Review

If you’re shocked that world-class tennis pro Serena Williams designed an Away collection, so was I. Go Serena!—though since she travels a ton, it kind of makes sense.

This midsize soft suitcase is great for staying organized on short trips. With solid red on the outside, her favorite patterns are featured in the interior lining of the bag, the luggage tag, and the Away luggage monogram. I’m a huge fan—of Serena and her rad design.

The Medium Soft Case is made with durable and water-resistant nylon , so it’s much more flexible than the polycarbonate case. With an easy-access front pocket, you can access your items on the go. Heading to rainy old England? Pack a rain shell and umbrella to pull out on the fly.

Just like all Away luggage, The Medium Soft Case features an interior compression system to help you to organize your life on the go.

As well, the built-in zip feature increases the capacity of the body up to 1.75” so that you can fit in all your favorites!

Away x Serena The Medium Soft Case is $333 and includes:

  • Multicolored camo print interior lining and organization system
  • Compression pad and water-resistant laundry bag
  • Matching camo print leather luggage tag
  • 360-degree spinner wheels
  • Bottom slip handle for easy lifting
  • TSA-approved combination lock

If you’re not a fan of this colorful collaboration, you don’t have to miss out on The Medium —it’s also available in more neutral and understated colors and in a hardside version:

Away x Serena Williams – The Medium Hardside Review

The Carry-On

Away The Carry-On Review

Keep calm and carry-on. That’s my general rule for traveling. I get totally overwhelmed in busy airports, but to avoid the massive baggage check lines and short-tempered agents, I go straight to security with my carry-on bag and pre-downloaded boarding pass.

The Away Carry-On fits nicely into the overhead bin of most airlines. Small in size, it’s ideal for the calculated traveler. With a conscientious design, this durable case is built for many adventures with its polycarbonate shell .

I love that it’s made with classy leather detailing and comes with a black luggage tag too, but mostly, I love that it’s available in 7 colors. What can I say? I love options as much as I love convenience and this case has both.

Equipped with a built-in charger , you can stay connected without searching for a plug. Charge your device up to 4 times.

Away The Carry-On – Phone Battery Review

If you’re a fan of security, breathe easy knowing the Carry-On has a TSA-approved combination lock .

Made with the brand’s signature interior compression system and hidden laundry bag , your focus can be on sightseeing rather than sorting your clothes. Travel smart for $295 .

If you need a little extra space, the Away The Bigger Carry-On could be a more suitable option for $315 .

The Kids’ Carry-On

Away The Kids Carry-On Review

The Kids’ Carry-On is “sized down (not downsized),” and constructed thoughtfully so that children can become independent travelers from a young age .

I like that, but also the fact that I wouldn’t have to handle two suitcases and a kid at the same time.

The durable suitcase can meet the demands of any adventure, but here’s the kicker: it’s lightweight enough that a child can handle their own luggage.

That’s one less thing for you to worry about as a parent while traveling with your kids (unfortunately jet lag and plane boredom aren’t things a suitcase can fix).

Just like Away luggage for adults, The Kids’ Carry-On is built with an interior compression system, laundry bag, and 360-degree spinner wheels .

They’ll have fun with its features and the fact that their luggage looks cool. Whether you’re a kid or an adult, good-looking luggage doesn’t go unnoticed.

The Kids’ Carry On comes with an ejectable phone battery and combination lock , so they won’t be looking for entertainment or their lost items as you catch your next flight. This piece is currently unavailable, but check back with the brand for future launches.

Set of Two: The Carry-On + The Medium

Away Set of Two – The Carry On and The Medium Review

No matter where you’re traveling, this Away luggage set — one carry-on and one checked bag —has you covered for $490 . In the realm of luggage, that’s a killer deal.

The smaller bag fits inside the larger one, saving you storage space between trips which I think is just brilliant.

The Medium is designed with two interior compartments : one for clothes and another for harder items like shoes, so that you focus on enjoying your day, not how to prepare for it.

You can separate your dirty clothes into the hidden water-resistant laundry bag so that keeping your clothes straight and unpacking on the other inside are two separate, easy processes.

Other features of The Medium include:

  • Durable polycarbonate shell
  • An ejectable battery that charges your phone
  • TSA-approved combination lock
  • 360-degree spinner wheels
  • Leather details
  • Black leather luggage tag
  • Interior compression system
  • Hidden laundry bag

Set of Two: The Daily Carry-On with Pocket + The Medium

Away Set of Two – The Daily Carry-On With Pocket and The Medium Review

This set of two includes the Daily Carry-On with Pocket and The Medium for $505 .

The Daily Carry-On With Pocket is designed for short trips, and I’m partial to its elegant leather details and a black Away luggage tag.

The 360-degree spinner wheels will make it easy to cover ground, and the interior compression system and hidden laundry bag will let you pack for multiple purposes. The TSA-approved combination lock keeps your valuables secure. Paired up with The Medium suitcase, this one’s a winning combo.

The Weekender

Away The Weekender – Monogrammed Review

Packing for short trips taught me something: I have a ton of essentials. Though it may be a spritz here and a scribble there, on a day-to-day basis, I use a lot of stuff.

The versatile Weekender duffle squeezes into any trunk, underside of the seat, or overhead bin.

The Weekender is meant for short journeys, and it accommodates life on the go with a fully lined shoe compartment , a 15” padded laptop pocket, and a sleeve at the back.

Comfortable with a detachable padded shoulder strap, it also features top handles joined by a button clasp closure for security. A leather base and accents offer style and durability, with a convenient zippered interior and exterior pocketing .

The Weekender duffle is available in nylon, canvas, and limited collections of unique edition fabrics for $258 .

The Backpack

Away The Backpack Review

When I can, I choose to travel with a backpack. Allowing for hands-free carrying, I’ll admit that any backpacks I’ve used without compartments often leave me digging for the things I need—as well as more than one missing passport scare.

A well-organized, accessible backpack offers a lot to your trip or workday. For this part of my Away luggage review, I analyzed the spacious interior of the backpack, which features a cushioned pocket with a water-resistant zipper to fit a 15” laptop.

The clever design also includes a passport pocket on the back of the pack and a collapsible water bottle pocket on the side of the bag. Two things that definitely would have come in handy for me a few years ago.

The Backpack has three compartments with strategic uses. Here, I’ll break them down for you:

  • Front side-access zipper pocket for large, flat items like books
  • The middle zip compartment features a hidden zipper pocket (for valuables such as keys or phones)
  • Large main compartment with space for clothes, shoes, and other bulky objects

The bag is sleek, but it fits everything in—more than you might think! I’ve found the slimmer design to be useful when on the road to keep essentials close. The Backpack costs $295 and is made of nylon in black, navy, green, asphalt, coast, and sand hues.

Who Is Away Luggage For?

Away primarily sells its products online but also has brick-and-mortar locations. Away designs suitcases, bags, and accessories built with thoughtful details to make each and every journey more seamless. The company is focused on transforming modern travel and inspiring customers to get away.

All that to say that if you’re a frequent flyer or a novice adventurer or anyone in between, Away has something for you.

Away Luggage Reviews: What Do Customers Think?

Away Luggage Review

Don’t just take my opinion for it, read what Away’s customers have to say as of May 2023. I hit up awaytravel.com to see what they thought and placed a few ratings and comments below.

  • The Carry On: 4.9/5 stars , 1,887 reviews
  • The Medium: 4.9/5 stars , 1,304 reviews
  • The Large: 4.9/5 stars , 979 reviews
  • The Everywhere Bag: 4.9/5 stars , 469 reviews

Diving into the comment, I learned that customers feel that Away stood by their promise . When issues arose with Away luggage , the company replaced it. As for the quality, here’s one Away luggage review that sums things up nicely:

“ Absolutely love this The Large checked in bag! I used it for a holiday trip and it fit so much more than I ever expected and the hard shell really makes a difference ! And I loved the bag for the dirty laundry. Overall super happy with my purchase I’ve recommended it to my entire family. ”

Heading over to Reddit, I read that one customer remarked that their carry-on had met every criterion in an Away luggage review. The delivery happened promptly , and customers were happy with the quality of their products, finding the design to be “ pristine .”

Though I did run into some negative comments about troubles with contacting customer service and slow shipping, overall, this brand appears to be loved by the thousands and that’s probably why it’s sold over 300,000 bags to this day.

Is Away Luggage Worth It?

Away Luggage Review

It’s easy to fall in love with how something looks. While writing this Away luggage review, the details made it clear that Away is more than looks, and to me, totally worth it.

Away luggage takes care of the details of travel—charging your phone on the go, keeping items secure, making models to suit young children, ambitious skiers, or the focused business person, alike.

I really appreciate that Away takes customer needs into account while designing. Addressing common problems and eliminating them, its suitcases and bags are equipped with smart and consistent features.

Away provides high-quality technical luggage with detailing for a middle-of-the-road price .   And since I know my way around baggage claim, that’s something I value about this brand—I truly feel like it cares for its customers.

Offering a 100-day trial to seal the deal, overall, I think Away makes brilliant, durable, and beautiful luggage that won’t break the bank. What more could you ask for?

Away Promotions & Discounts

While combing through the brand’s website for this Away luggage review, I found that while there was no Away luggage code, it does offer a Refer A Friend promo. You can also sign up for the mailing list to stay on top of the latest news.

Where To Buy Away Luggage

Away Luggage Review

Away products can be purchased on their website and through the Away Luggage Amazon page.

Live in or close to NYC? Pop into their travel boutique on Bond Street. Happily, I found that there is more than one Away Luggage store.

If you’re in the UK, you may be pleased to know that Away also has one physical store in London.

Alternatives

Away Luggage Review

Away Luggage is a popular travel gear brand that offers various types of suitcases, carry-ons, and other travel accessories. If you’re looking for similar brands or alternatives to Away Luggage, here are some options to consider:

  • CALPAK Torrino II : This expandable carry-on suitcase is another great alternative to Away Luggage. It features a TSA-approved lock, double-spinner wheels, and multiple compartments for organization. The 20-inch suitcase is priced at $165.
  • Samsonite : This well-known luggage brand offers a wide variety of suitcase options at different price points. Samsonite suitcases are known for their durability and quality, making them a great alternative to Away Luggage. Prices range from $120 to $800 depending on the type of suitcase.

Away Luggage Sizes

I realize that it can be hard to tell how big or small a suitcase is just from a picture. That’s why I’ve included a size guide up next in this Away luggage review to make things super easy—guess I was inspired by the brand:

Away Shipping Policy

Away ships everywhere in Canada, the US, and the UK. Away has a goal of shipping worldwide, so if you live outside of those areas, I’d recommend staying tuned!

To let Away know that you’d like your country on their radar, tweet (@away) or send an email to [email protected] . Away offers free shipping to the US and Canada, with the exception of P.O. boxes. Otherwise, shipping ranges between $15-$50 depending on the method and what you buy.

How long does it take to ship?

  • Orders ship from the Away warehouse in 1 business day
  • The length of the shipping process depends on the shipment method
  • Free shipping arrives within 1-7 business days, depending on the location
  • Personalized items take longer to deliver
  • Items are not shipped on weekends or national holidays

Away Luggage Return Policy

If your Away product doesn’t meet your needs, you can return it within 100 days of purchase (no hidden qualifiers!) Fill out the online form to begin. Quick note: Away does not cover the cost of shipping for orders returned from Canada though.

Personalized items are made to order, so the 100-day trial does not apply . These items cannot be returned or exchanged, but other regular warranties apply.

The 100-day trial period is not renewed when you exchange your item for a new one. Instead, the remainder of the 100-day period applies to your exchanged item, which, I think is fair.

To make a return, fill out the form on the returns page, and the Away team will get back to you with the next steps. Shipping fees are non-refundable.

Away Luggage Lock Reset

My aim (like the brand’s) in this Away luggage review is to be as helpful as possible, and that means giving you all the possible details about its luggage.

This section is all about locks—because, well, they’re what separates you from your belongings while traveling. Here’s what to do if you have to reset yours:

  • Set the dials to 0-0-0
  • Push the reset button with a pointed object, like a pen until you hear a click
  • Roll the digits to your preferred combination
  • Press the circular button in the middle of the latch and the reset button will pop back out. When the clasp opens, your combination has been set.
  • Roll the digits to your combination and press the circular button to open the suitcase

100-Day Trial

Away understands that the best way to test that your luggage items support your travel is to pilot them. For that reason, every Away item comes with a 100-day trial ( unless the item has been personalized ).

You can live with your suitcase for 100 days to make sure it meets your needs and standards. If it doesn’t feel right, you can return it for a refund or exchange.

Away Luggage Warranty

In this Away luggage review, I highlighted that Away suitcases are guaranteed with a lifetime warranty. This warranty covers any damage to the wheels, shell, handles, zippers, or anything else that affects the functional use of the luggage.

Another important note for this Away luggage review: part of this deal is that the company will repair anything that breaks, by fixing or replacing it. This applies to defects in manufacturing and parts, of course, not ill-treatment.

The Mini and all personal items or interior organization products are subject to a one-year warranty. These items are meant to be protected by your suitcase, so the same lifetime warranty does not apply.

Review of The Everywhere Bag From Away – Is It Worth It? [2024]

Away Overview

The everywhere bag, the overnight bag, the weekender, size and compartments, durability and materials, competitors, where to buy away bags, final thoughts.

See our Advertising Policy for more about our partners, how we make money, and our rating methodology. Opinions and recommendations are ours alone.

The author received a complimentary bag for this review. All opinions are the author’s own, and Away had no input in any part of this review.

Since I often travel with my wife and kids, we have used and abused a lot of bags over the years.

We’ve tried everything from softshell to hardshell checked and carry-on bags to backpacks and duffel bags. But recently, my wife had been looking for a replacement for her purse that could act as a catchall (and then subsequently overflow) during our trips.

She needed something sturdy that could attach to her rolling carry-on, resistant enough to handle international travel with kids but still spacious, and, of course, stylish.

So, when Away reached out asking if we wanted to test one of its bags, I jumped at the opportunity!

Enter The Everywhere Bag.

Away The Everywhere Bag Admirals Club

Away bags have become a staple in airports across the world thanks to its popular carry-on bag , which is not only sleek and minimalistic but also extremely functional and durable.

The award-winning American brand now offers a wide range of travel accessories, all with the style, quality, and warranty that owners have grown to love.

From lightweight packing cubes to high-end aluminum suitcases, Away strives to make “every journey more seamless,” according to its marketing.

I have been an Away customer for years, and in my house we have Away carry-on bags in multiple sizes and colors, but our latest addition is a bit more versatile: The Everywhere Bag.

After a round-the-world trip, including many taxi rides, flights, and a cruise, this bag did indeed make things just a bit more seamless!

The Everywhere Bag Sizes

Away The Everywhere Bag under coach seat

The Everywhere Bag is Away’s standard size for this style of silhouette/duffel bag. However, there are 2 larger sizes.

And it comes in a variety of colors, too! The bag in this review is navy blue.

Dimensions : 16.3 x 10.2 x 7.3 inches

Capacity : 20 liters

The Everywhere Bag is the perfect compliment to a carry-on bag when traveling, but is versatile enough to be a work bag or even a gym bag.

Dimensions 17.7 x 11 x 9 inches

Capacity : 28 liters

The Overnight Bag gets a nice bump in capacity, which should be enough for most people on a quick overnight trip where you need to pack shoes and a change of clothes.

Dimensions : 20.9 x 11.8 x 9.4 inches

Capacity : 38 liters

The Weekender is the largest bag in the collection, with enough capacity to fit a few days’ worth of clothes inside of it.

The Everywhere Bag Real-Life Testing

Away The Everywhere Bag on bag in Miami

My wife and I have been traveling nonstop for the past 2 months, and The Everywhere Bag has made every stop with us as we made our way around the world.

From Walt Disney World with the kids in tow to the rainy streets of Tokyo, this bag has seen its fair share of abuse and has taken it all in (sleek and stylish) stride.

Whether my wife is doing her best Mary Poppins impression and stuffing it with everything the family needs on an international flight or I have it securely attached to my carry-on bag (thanks to its convenient sleeve) rolling through the airport, The Everywhere Bag has been our go-to travel accessory lately.

The Everywhere Bag has a main compartment where the majority of the 20 liters of storage is allocated.

Away The Everywhere Bag top view

Thanks to a wraparound zipper, the bag opens almost completely by itself when unzipped, which makes packing and organizing easier.

Inside the bag are zipper and slip pockets, a water bottle pocket, and a detachable key clip to help keep your travel gear organized.

Away The Everywhere Bag pockets

On the outside of the bag is a padded laptop sleeve that can hold a 15-inch laptop and closes with a magnetic zipper .

Away The Everywhere Bag magnet zipper

Also, on the outside is an almost secret zipper compartment just large enough for a wallet, passport, and cell phone — if they are thin enough.

Away The Everywhere Bag secret pocket

Since the pocket is so well-hidden and the zipper is difficult to open discreetly, it is a good spot to store valuables that you might need throughout your journey.

Finally, the best feature is the trolley sleeve that lets the bag seamlessly slip over the handle of most carry-ons to make rolling the airport a breeze.

Away The Everywhere Bag sleeve

If you prefer a shoulder strap, a detachable one is included, as well.

The Everywhere Bag is made out of thick, water-resistant nylon with leather trim and is complemented with metal zippers and magnetic zipper pulls.

Away The Everywhere Bag at EDITION Ginza Tokyo hotel

From the moment I took it out of the box, it was clear that this bag was sturdy and well-built. And coming from a company like Away, that wasn’t too surprising.

We have shoved this bag under seats, in overhead bins, in overpacked car trunks, subways, and more, and it still looks like it did the day it arrived.

The Everywhere Bag from Away is a high-quality, functional, and durable bag that makes a great addition to almost any travel setup.

The market for travel bags is a crowded one.

With options from every major brand in almost every single style and color, you could spend more time researching than you would travel with it.

Here are some of our favorite brands to take a look at besides Away:

  • Amazon Basics
  • Briggs & Riley

Away The Everywhere Bag closeup

The Everywhere Bag by Away is not the most inexpensive bag.

At the time of writing, the bag cost $195, plus $35 if wanted it embroidered with your initials.

The good news is that The Everywhere Bag is the least expensive option in this Away lineup:

  • The Overnight Bag: $225
  • The Weekender: $245

Away The Everywhere Bag zipper

The Everywhere Bag comes with a 1-year limited warranty that covers cracks or breaks, broken zippers, fabric tears, and more.

Unfortunately, this and other bags do not receive the coveted lifetime warranty that is included with Away suitcases.

You can buy Away bags at away.com , at Away stores , and at select retailers.

If you are shopping for a new Away bag, be sure to check your Amex Offers to see if you can score a discount on your purchase.

Away The Everywhere Bag at hotel NYC

Overall, I am really happy with the addition of The Everywhere Bag to our travel gear lineup. More importantly, my wife is happy with it, too!

Whether I have it slung over my shoulder for a quick overnight trip or she has it attached to her carry-on bag in the airport, the design and functionality work well for both of us.

Despite it not having a lifetime warranty, I don’t think I will be running into too many issues with this bag, thanks to its sturdy build and quality materials.

If you are in the market for a new duffel bag, boarding bag, or travel tote, The Everywhere Bag is an excellent choice.

WNBA players will soon be able to take charter planes for all away games

A detail of the WNBA logo is seen on a basketball falling through a hoop

The WNBA is set to announce the use of charter planes for travel to and from all away games, league Commissioner Cathy Engelbert said Tuesday.

It will be a change from the current arrangement, under which the league's 12 teams primarily flew commercial.

“We intend to fund a full-time charter for this season,” Engelbert said Tuesday in a meeting with sports editors.

The existing rule, stipulated by the current collective bargaining agreement, inevitably led to delays and headaches, as documented in an Associated Press report last year .

In particular, especially tall players have often been cramped into uncomfortable seats — while international players, who cannot use expedited airport security processing like TSA PreCheck, sometimes caused extended waits for their teammates.

While players are usually able to take comfort or economy-plus seats, any upgrades had to come directly from players’ pockets.

An attempt by the New York Liberty to circumvent the commercial-flying rule in 2022 was met with a record $500,000 fine, though the league has since allowed teams with back-to-back game nights to use charters.

Englebert said the league will launch the program “as soon as we can get planes in places.”

Last year, the WNBA estimated it would cost $25 million  to use charters for the entire season.

The collective bargaining agreement is set to expire after this season — and with interest in women's basketball at all-time highs amid Caitlin Clark mania, the league looks to be getting ahead of ongoing complaints about a lack of investment in its players while anticipating increased revenue that should help cover the price of flying private.

The first WNBA regular season game is scheduled to tip off May 14.

  • For travel in the United States, the average premium is $91 to $406.
  • Travel insurance protects against delayed baggage, trip cancellation, and more.

The average cost of travel insurance fluctuates throughout the year, based on demand and whether or not school's in session. Also keep in mind that where you're traveling and how many people are taking the trip will affect your exact premium.

The average travel insurance premium this week is about the same compared to last week.

Travel insurance rates this week:

  • Average premium: $288.60
  • Average trip cost: $6,976.04
  • Average trip length: 16 Days

Understanding Travel Insurance

Travel insurance plans can cover both domestic and international travel. It could protect against something as familiar as delayed baggage (experts estimate 85% of lost luggage is returned to its owner within 48 hours) or as complicated as trip cancellation.

The benefits and limitations of travel insurance vary based on the company and plan. Above all else, this insurance coverage offers peace of mind.

Some credit cards offer a limited amount of travel insurance annually. If you need clarification on what your credit card offers, contact your provider to verify. These plans are great for cancellations and interruptions but may not cover more costly losses associated with unexpected medical expenses or emergency evacuations.

Individual travel insurance plans include this and much more. Travel insurance protects travelers from the unexpected when away from home.

Average Cost of Travel Insurance by Destination

Some countries are naturally more expensive travel destinations due to higher flight and lodging costs, which could increase travel insurance costs. Travel insurance will generally cost 5% to 10% of your total trip price, according to SquareMouth.

Here's how the prices stack up:

Source: SquareMouth

How Far in Advance to Purchase Travel Insurance

According to an AAA travel survey , 88% of travelers say that reimbursement after a trip cancellation is the most valuable benefit of trip insurance.

According to data gathered by SquareMouth in the last six months, travelers tend to purchase trip cancellation travel insurance 53 days before their trip. Meanwhile, travelers without trip cancellation insurance will buy a policy approximately 16 days before their trip. Regardless of when you buy, cancellation protection can kick in to protect you against the unexpected.

Average Cost of Travel Insurance by Age

A traveler's age is a significant factor in determining the cost of travel insurance. The older a traveler is, the higher travel insurance premiums are. For instance, a senior traveler may need more insurance for health-related emergencies than a millennial.

When calculating your travel insurance premium, travel insurance providers consider the likelihood of a medical emergency.

Travel Insurance Rate Tips

How much does travel insurance typically cost.

Travel insurance rates through most providers fall between 4% and 8% of the total trip cost. Like the cost of flights, cruises, etc., rates may vary substantially based on the season, your original location, your destination, and other factors. This week, the average cost of a policy was close to $300.

How can I save money on travel insurance?

To save money on travel insurance, tailor your policy to your specific needs and avoid unnecessary extras. You should also shop around to compare quotes from multiple insurers. Opting for an annual plan if you're a frequent traveler, checking existing coverages from other insurance policies or credit card benefits, and choosing a policy with a higher deductible can significantly lower your premiums. Always read the fine print to understand your coverage fully, ensuring you don't pay for redundant or irrelevant features.

Where are the cheapest places to buy travel insurance?

To find affordable travel insurance, consider using online comparison websites like SquareMouth or InsureMyTrip to see rates from various providers. Other ways to save include purchasing directly from insurance companies, exploring package deals from travel agencies or airlines, utilizing included coverage from credit card benefits, and checking for discounts through membership organizations such as AAA or AARP.

National Teacher Day is May 7, 2024, and Teacher Appreciation Week runs Monday, May 6, to Friday, May 10. The idea for a week to honor teachers began more than 70 years ago with first lady Eleanor Roosevelt.

The National National Parent Teacher Association has deemed this year's theme "Teachers are Shining Stars," and has an online toolkit with ideas on how to thank teachers. The National Education Association website has suggestions on how to celebrate teachers, too.

"Teachers are the heart and soul of our Nation," President Biden said in a proclamation on Friday, May 3. "They care for our Nation’s students, pass on knowledge to rising generations, and inspire our children to dream up new possibilities for their futures."

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .

Why Europe's most famous tourist attractions are turning people away

A large number of people outside the ruins of a large temple

They say money can't buy you happiness, but at Europe's busiest tourist hot spots, it can get you peace and quiet.

For example: Greece's culture ministry has revealed plans to offer crowd-free and private tours of Athens's Acropolis for €5,000 ($8,200).

A ticket to the ancient site usually costs about $33, and it's not the continent's only attraction offering a separate experience for those with deep pockets.

Queues at the Vatican Museum and Sistine Chapel in Rome can stretch around the block, but if you want a private moment with Michelangelo's ceiling masterpiece, prepare to cough up $730.

Even the British Museum, which is free, offers out-of-hours visits for $54.

These types of tours are popular "because of the privacy, the exclusivity and cachet", according to Laura Jeffrey, director of luxury travel agent Passepartout Travel.

"It's being able to tell your friends, 'We saw it with no-one else around'," she says.

"I'm surprised that it's taken this long to announce and to come forward with this idea [at the Acropolis]. I think it's a great idea if that money is being used wisely."

A large number of people outside a building that says Buckingham Palace Shop on it.

The luxury travel market is booming and is estimated to be worth $2.1 trillion, according to a 2023 market analysis report by Grand View Research.

The industry is expected to grow by 7.9 per cent each year from 2024 to 2030 as rich travellers spend big across the globe.

Professor of Marketing and Tourism at the University of Nottingham, Marina Novelli, says it's not clear what "the primary purpose" is behind the Greek government's decision to introduce private tours.

"There is a very big difference between implementing luxury for just commercial gain and more cash flow in the government's kitty versus introducing something that is going to be utilised to support the community and identify ways to conserve the various attractions that get visited," she says.

A Greek government spokesperson has previously told media the injection of cash would be "reinvested".

Overcrowding is also an issue at the historical site, which saw Greece last year implement a cap of 20,000 visitors a day.

It has timed entry too, meaning a certain number of people are allowed in every hour.

"The main problem in a lot of these destinations is that the carrying capacity has been identified probably 20 or 30 years ago but commercial interests have meant that they have been ignored," Professor Novelli said.

"Visitors to the Acropolis need to be reduced in order for the Acropolis to be in the long term maintained."

A long queue of people, pictured outdoors

'Elitist' move 'creates a divide'

Overtourism is an issue hurting many residents in Europe's most popular destinations, and elsewhere around the world, who are keen to balance a much-needed industry with preserving the attractions, environment, and fabric of the local community.

Tens of thousands of protesters marched across the Canary Islands, off the coast of Morocco, last month calling for a temporary limit on the number of tourists.

Residents on the Greek island of Paros have staged multiple rallies concerned their coastline is being swamped by unsustainable beach clubs .

Meanwhile in Venice, Italian locals protested last week over a new fee visitors have to pay to access the city.

While authorities say the $8 payment is aimed at thinning out crowds along the canals during peak holiday season, residents argued their city was being turned into a theme park.

Greek news outlets are reporting the private tours of Acropolis will operate from 7am-9am and 8pm-10pm which would mean opening hours for the general public could be pushed back by an hour to 9am.

Critics have labelled the move "elitist" and say it could worsen the crowd crush at the site.

"I think it creates a divide between regular travellers and people that can afford such things," Jeremy Sampson, The Travel Foundation CEO said.

"Especially when you are talking about important historical sites and natural spaces, these are meant to be shared across society so it doesn't make sense to me that you would turn that into an elite experience."

A line of police in uniform, seen from behind, blocking a large number of people shouting and waving flags.

Europe is the most visited region in the world and the United Nations expects international tourism to return to pre-pandemic levels this year.

While it has undoubtedly boosted economies and jobs across the world, tourism experts say there needs to be a rethink on how we measure success around international travel.

"Overtourism is not necessarily the root issue; it is a symptom rather than a cause and beneath the surface is what I would call bad planning or an imbalance in tourism," Mr Sampson said.

"Business-as-usual, actually is not really viable much longer if at all."

Professor Novelli says the problem isn't new.

"People suffer short-term memory loss, pre-COVID we were talking about the fact that those numbers were unsustainable."

A man in a suit smiles at the camera

Charging wealthy visitors for a premium experience isn't new either, but it is growing. And whether the extra cash ends up preserving the experiences for future generations remains to be seen.

"The knee-jerk reaction is to say that it's a bad thing, and actually I think it really can be a force for good if the money that is spent is being spent properly and if there is some sort of attempt to balance that out for those who can't afford it," Ms Jeffrey said.

"In some ways, I wonder whether €5,000 is enough, but I also think that you have to be very careful about establishing a precedent, which is that it's only by having €5,000, €10,000 or €20,000 to spare, you can actually get into these places."

Professor Novelli also said there was a risk of expensive tours becoming more popular, and squeezing out other visitors.

"The problem is often if those tools become popular ... they might increase the number [of tours] and the issue of elitism might come into the picture even farther because the need to prioritise those costly tours will obviously inadvertently impact on those which are free or less expensive."

Greece's culture ministry was contacted for comment.

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow: The Best of Moscow!

I just got back from one week in Moscow. And, as you might have already guessed, it was a mind-boggling experience. It was not my first trip to the Russian capital. But I hardly ever got enough time to explore this sprawling city. Visiting places for business rarely leaves enough time for sightseeing. I think that if you’ve got one week in Russia, you can also consider splitting your time between its largest cities (i.e. Saint Petersburg ) to get the most out of your trip. Seven days will let you see the majority of the main sights and go beyond just scratching the surface. In this post, I’m going to share with you my idea of the perfect travel itinerary for one week in Moscow.

Moscow is perhaps both the business and cultural hub of Russia. There is a lot more to see here than just the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Centuries-old churches with onion-shaped domes dotted around the city are in stark contrast with newly completed impressive skyscrapers of Moscow City dominating the skyline. I spent a lot of time thinking about my Moscow itinerary before I left. And this city lived up to all of my expectations.

7-day Moscow itinerary

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow

Day 1 – red square and the kremlin.

Metro Station: Okhotny Ryad on Red Line.

No trip to Moscow would be complete without seeing its main attraction. The Red Square is just a stone’s throw away from several metro stations. It is home to some of the most impressive architectural masterpieces in the city. The first thing you’ll probably notice after entering it and passing vendors selling weird fur hats is the fairytale-like looking Saint Basil’s Cathedral. It was built to commemorate one of the major victories of Ivan the Terrible. I once spent 20 minutes gazing at it, trying to find the perfect angle to snap it. It was easier said than done because of the hordes of locals and tourists.

As you continue strolling around Red Square, there’s no way you can miss Gum. It was widely known as the main department store during the Soviet Era. Now this large (yet historic) shopping mall is filled with expensive boutiques, pricey eateries, etc. During my trip to Moscow, I was on a tight budget. So I only took a retro-style stroll in Gum to get a rare glimpse of a place where Soviet leaders used to grocery shop and buy their stuff. In case you want some modern shopping experience, head to the Okhotny Ryad Shopping Center with stores like New Yorker, Zara, and Adidas.

To continue this Moscow itinerary, next you may want to go inside the Kremlin walls. This is the center of Russian political power and the president’s official residence. If you’re planning to pay Kremlin a visit do your best to visit Ivan the Great Bell Tower as well. Go there as early as possible to avoid crowds and get an incredible bird’s-eye view. There are a couple of museums that are available during designated visiting hours. Make sure to book your ticket online and avoid lines.

Day 2 – Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Tretyakov Gallery, and the Arbat Street

Metro Station: Kropotkinskaya on Red Line

As soon as you start creating a Moscow itinerary for your second day, you’ll discover that there are plenty of metro stations that are much closer to certain sites. Depending on your route, take a closer look at the metro map to pick the closest.

The white marble walls of Christ the Saviour Cathedral are awe-inspiring. As you approach this tallest Orthodox Christian church, you may notice the bronze sculptures, magnificent arches, and cupolas that were created to commemorate Russia’s victory against Napoleon.

travel itinerary for one week in Moscow

How to Get a Decent Haircut in a Foreign Country

Unfortunately, the current Cathedral is a replica, since original was blown to bits in 1931 by the Soviet government. The new cathedral basically follows the original design, but they have added some new elements such as marble high reliefs.

Home to some precious collection of artworks, in Tretyakov Gallery you can find more than 150,000 of works spanning centuries of artistic endeavor. Originally a privately owned gallery, it now has become one of the largest museums in Russia. The Gallery is often considered essential to visit. But I have encountered a lot of locals who have never been there.

Famous for its souvenirs, musicians, and theaters, Arbat street is among the few in Moscow that were turned into pedestrian zones. Arbat street is usually very busy with tourists and locals alike. My local friend once called it the oldest street in Moscow dating back to 1493. It is a kilometer long walking street filled with fancy gift shops, small cozy restaurants, lots of cute cafes, and street artists. It is closed to any vehicular traffic, so you can easily stroll it with kids.

Day 3 – Moscow River Boat Ride, Poklonnaya Hill Victory Park, the Moscow City

Metro Station: Kievskaya and Park Pobedy on Dark Blue Line / Vystavochnaya on Light Blue Line

Voyaging along the Moscow River is definitely one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the city and see the attractions from a bit different perspective. Depending on your Moscow itinerary, travel budget and the time of the year, there are various types of boats available. In the summer there is no shortage of boats, and you’ll be spoiled for choice.

exploring Moscow

Travel Itinerary for One Week in Beijing

If you find yourself in Moscow during the winter months, I’d recommend going with Radisson boat cruise. These are often more expensive (yet comfy). They offer refreshments like tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and, of course, alcoholic drinks. Prices may vary but mostly depend on your food and drink selection. Find their main pier near the opulent Ukraine hotel . The hotel is one of the “Seven Sisters”, so if you’re into the charm of Stalinist architecture don’t miss a chance to stay there.

The area near Poklonnaya Hill has the closest relation to the country’s recent past. The memorial complex was completed in the mid-1990s to commemorate the Victory and WW2 casualties. Also known as the Great Patriotic War Museum, activities here include indoor attractions while the grounds around host an open-air museum with old tanks and other vehicles used on the battlefield.

How I Planned My Trip to Vietnam

The hallmark of the memorial complex and the first thing you see as you exit metro is the statue of Nike mounted to its column. This is a very impressive Obelisk with a statue of Saint George slaying the dragon at its base.

Maybe not as impressive as Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower , the skyscrapers of the Moscow City (otherwise known as Moscow International Business Center) are so drastically different from dull Soviet architecture. With 239 meters and 60 floors, the Empire Tower is the seventh highest building in the business district.

The observation deck occupies 56 floor from where you have some panoramic views of the city. I loved the view in the direction of Moscow State University and Luzhniki stadium as well to the other side with residential quarters. The entrance fee is pricey, but if you’re want to get a bird’s eye view, the skyscraper is one of the best places for doing just that.

Day 4 – VDNKh, Worker and Collective Farm Woman Monument, The Ostankino TV Tower

Metro Station: VDNKh on Orange Line

VDNKh is one of my favorite attractions in Moscow. The weird abbreviation actually stands for Russian vystavka dostizheniy narodnogo khozyaystva (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy). With more than 200 buildings and 30 pavilions on the grounds, VDNKh serves as an open-air museum. You can easily spend a full day here since the park occupies a very large area.

Moscow sights

Places to Visit in Barcelona That Aren’t Beaches

First, there are pavilions that used to showcase different cultures the USSR was made of. Additionally, there is a number of shopping pavilions, as well as Moskvarium (an Oceanarium) that features a variety of marine species. VDNKh is a popular venue for events and fairs. There is always something going on, so I’d recommend checking their website if you want to see some particular exhibition.

A stone’s throw away from VDNKh there is a very distinctive 25-meters high monument. Originally built in 1937 for the world fair in Paris, the hulking figures of men and women holding a hammer and a sickle represent the Soviet idea of united workers and farmers. It doesn’t take much time to see the monument, but visiting it gives some idea of the Soviet Union’s grandiose aspirations.

I have a thing for tall buildings. So to continue my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow I decided to climb the fourth highest TV tower in the world. This iconic 540m tower is a fixture of the skyline. You can see it virtually from everywhere in Moscow, and this is where you can get the best panoramic views (yep, even better than Empire skyscraper).

top things to do in Moscow

Parts of the floor are made of tempered glass, so it can be quite scary to exit the elevator. But trust me, as you start observing buildings and cars below, you won’t want to leave. There is only a limited number of tickets per day, so you may want to book online. Insider tip: the first tour is cheaper, you can save up to $10 if go there early.

Day 5 – A Tour To Moscow Manor Houses

Metro Station: Kolomenskoye, Tsaritsyno on Dark Green Line / Kuskovo on Purple Line

I love visiting the manor houses and palaces in Moscow. These opulent buildings were generally built to house Russian aristocratic families and monarchs. Houses tend to be rather grand affairs with impressive architecture. And, depending on the whims of the owners, some form of a landscaped garden.

During the early part of the 20th century though, many of Russia’s aristocratic families (including the family of the last emperor) ended up being killed or moving abroad . Their manor houses were nationalized. Some time later (after the fall of the USSR) these were open to the public. It means that today a great many of Moscow’s finest manor houses and palaces are open for touring.

one week Moscow itinerary

20 Travel Tips I’ve Learned From Travelling The World

There are 20 manor houses scattered throughout the city and more than 25 in the area around. But not all of them easily accessible and exploring them often takes a lot of time. I’d recommend focusing on three most popular estates in Moscow that are some 30-minute metro ride away from Kremlin.

Sandwiched between the Moscow River and the Andropov Avenue, Kolomenskoye is a UNESCO site that became a public park in the 1920’s. Once a former royal estate, now it is one of the most tranquil parks in the city with gorgeous views. The Ascension Church, The White Column, and the grounds are a truly grand place to visit.

You could easily spend a full day here, exploring a traditional Russian village (that is, in fact, a market), picnicking by the river, enjoying the Eastern Orthodox church architecture, hiking the grounds as well as and wandering the park and gardens with wildflower meadows, apple orchards, and birch and maple groves. The estate museum showcases Russian nature at its finest year-round.

12 Stunning National Parks and Regional Parks In France

If my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow was a family tree, Tsaritsyno Park would probably be the crazy uncle that no-one talks about. It’s a large park in the south of the city of mind-boggling proportions, unbelievable in so many ways, and yet most travelers have never heard of it.

The palace was supposed to be a summer home for Empress Catherine the Great. But since the construction didn’t meet with her approval the palace was abandoned. Since the early 1990’s the palace, the pond, and the grounds have been undergoing renovations. The entire complex is now looking brighter and more elaborately decorated than at possibly any other time during its history. Like most parks in Moscow, you can visit Tsaritsyno free of charge, but there is a small fee if you want to visit the palace.

Moscow itinerary

How To Stop Procrastinating When Trip Planning

Last, but by no means least on my Moscow itinerary is Kuskovo Park . This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path place. While it is not easily accessible, you will be rewarded with a lack of crowds. This 18th-century summer country house of the Sheremetev family was one of the first summer country estates of the Russian nobility. And when you visit you’ll quickly realize why locals love this park.

Like many other estates, Kuskovo has just been renovated. So there are lovely French formal garden, a grotto, and the Dutch house to explore. Make sure to plan your itinerary well because the estate is some way from a metro station.

Day 6 – Explore the Golden Ring

Creating the Moscow itinerary may keep you busy for days with the seemingly endless amount of things to do. Visiting the so-called Golden Ring is like stepping back in time. Golden Ring is a “theme route” devised by promotion-minded journalist and writer Yuri Bychkov.

Having started in Moscow the route will take you through a number of historical cities. It now includes Suzdal, Vladimir, Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Sergiev Posad. All these awe-inspiring towns have their own smaller kremlins and feature dramatic churches with onion-shaped domes, tranquil residential areas, and other architectural landmarks.

Two Weeks In Thailand: The Perfect 14-Day Itinerary

I only visited two out of eight cities included on the route. It is a no-brainer that Sergiev Posad is the nearest and the easiest city to see on a day trip from Moscow. That being said, you can explore its main attractions in just one day. Located some 70 km north-east of the Russian capital, this tiny and overlooked town is home to Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, UNESCO Site.

things to do in Moscow in seven days

You Will Also Like: 3-Day London Itinerary

Sergiev Posad is often described as being at the heart of Russian spiritual life. So it is uncommon to see the crowds of Russian pilgrims showing a deep reverence for their religion. If you’re traveling independently and using public transport, you can reach Sergiev Posad by bus (departs from VDNKh) or by suburban commuter train from Yaroslavskaya Railway Station (Bahnhof). It takes about one and a half hours to reach the town.

Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is a great place to get a glimpse of filling and warming Russian lunch, specifically at the “ Gostevaya Izba ” restaurant. Try the duck breast, hearty potato and vegetables, and the awesome Napoleon cake.

Day 7 – Gorky Park, Izmailovo Kremlin, Patriarch’s Ponds

Metro Station: Park Kultury or Oktyabrskaya on Circle Line / Partizanskaya on Dark Blue Line / Pushkinskaya on Dark Green Line

Gorky Park is in the heart of Moscow. It offers many different types of outdoor activities, such as dancing, cycling, skateboarding, walking, jogging, and anything else you can do in a park. Named after Maxim Gorky, this sprawling and lovely park is where locals go on a picnic, relax and enjoy free yoga classes. It’s a popular place to bike around, and there is a Muzeon Art Park not far from here. A dynamic location with a younger vibe. There is also a pier, so you can take a cruise along the river too.

Random Russian guy

How to Save Money While Traveling in Europe

The Kremlin in Izmailovo is by no means like the one you can find near the Red Square. Originally built for decorative purposes, it now features the Vernissage flea market and a number of frequent fairs, exhibitions, and conferences. Every weekend, there’s a giant flea market in Izmailovo, where dozens of stalls sell Soviet propaganda crap, Russian nesting dolls, vinyl records, jewelry and just about any object you can imagine. Go early in the morning if you want to beat the crowds.

All the Bulgakov’s fans should pay a visit to Patriarch’s Ponds (yup, that is plural). With a lovely small city park and the only one (!) pond in the middle, the location is where the opening scene of Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita was set. The novel is centered around a visit by Devil to the atheistic Soviet Union is considered by many critics to be one of the best novels of the 20th century. I spent great two hours strolling the nearby streets and having lunch in the hipster cafe.

Conclusion and Recommendations

To conclude, Moscow is a safe city to visit. I have never had a problem with getting around and most locals are really friendly once they know you’re a foreigner. Moscow has undergone some serious reconstruction over the last few years. So you can expect some places to be completely different. I hope my one week Moscow itinerary was helpful! If you have less time, say 4 days or 5 days, I would cut out day 6 and day 7. You could save the Golden Ring for a separate trip entirely as there’s lots to see!
