Jill Sobule
Jill Sobule has released a dozen of albums spanning three decades of recording, tackling such topics as the death penalty, anorexia nervosa, shoplifting, reproduction, the French Resistance, adolescent malaise, LGBTQ issues, and the Christian Right, to name a few - with her trademark wit and aplomb.
The Denver-born songwriter/guitarist/singer's work is at once deeply personal and socially conscious, seriously funny and derisively tragic. While her songs cover expansive thematic ground, they benefit greatly from Jill’s subtle intelligence and skillful light-handedness. No sloganeering flag-and-fist waving here, but rather portrait-&-story songs about human beings, real and imagined, which allow us to step back from the issues they tackle, be they individual or societal, and to relate to them as we would to a close friend.
On stage, she entertains, amuses, provokes, and more often than not, takes her audiences on an emotional roller coaster, from comedy to pathos in a few bars of music, often within the same song.
Jill Sobule’s recording career began in 1990 with the album Things Here Are Different (MCA), produced by Todd Rundgren. Radio took notice thanks to the single’s “Too Cool To Fall In Love.” Her 1995 self-titled album (Atlantic) brought her mainstream commercial and critical success with two hit singles: the satirical gem “Supermodel” from the movie Clueless and “I Kissed A Girl” (the original), the first ever openly queer-themed Billboard Top 20 record.
For her most recent album, the Ben Lee-produced Nostalgia Kills, Sobule turned her warm wit and laser-focused poet’s eye on herself more than ever before. For all its graceful, funny, and heartbreaking explorations of awkward youth and grown-up regrets, Nostalgia Kills is as of-the-moment as anything in Jill Sobule’s catalog. Through her own experiences, she explores issues our society still collectively struggles with (LGBTQ rights, teen mental health, our unhealthy obsession with staying forever young) and gently skewers our tendency to dwell on the past at the expense of addressing the present.
Sobule has performed with Neil Young, Billy Bragg, Steve Earle, Cyndi Lauper, Tom Morello, Warren Zevon, and John Doe. She inducted Neil Diamond into the Songwriter’s H all of Fame. She has shared billing with Don Henley, Joe Jackson, Warren Zevon, the influential LA punk band X, and Lloyd Cole & The Negatives. She regularly co-stars with comedian/actress/author/SNL alumni Julia Sweeney in their Jill & Julia Show, an unusual and mesmerizing combination of song and storytelling. A road warrior, she plays more than 100 shows a year.
I n November of 2019 Jill sang a song as herself on an episode of the Simpsons. Jill’s latest project is her New York Times Critics pick, Drama Desk nominated autobiographical musical “Fuck 7th Grade” which premiered at the Wild Project in 2022; had a remount in the Winter of 2023; and will be back November 2023.

Long before Katy Perry had that infamous hit single, Denver born singer-songwriter Jill Sobule bravely released her version of ‘I Kissed a Girl’, a risqué move for her time. Known for her mostly female character plot driven lyrics and emotive lyrics often compared to the likes of Randy Newman and Harry Nillsson, through her career Sobule released seven studio albums. Still she is regarded as an underground artist, her song ‘Supermodel’ featured on the soundtrack of the iconic teen smash hit film ‘Clueless’. Releasing her self-titled album in 1995 situated her in the new wave of female singer-songwriters amongst Alanis Morrissette, Lisa Loeb and Juliana Hatfield. The album included the single ‘I Kissed a Girl’ went to number thirty-six in the Billboard charts but became a huge radio hit, leading her to commercial success. Her third album, ‘Pink Pearl’ released in 2000 was inspired by real-life news stories, full of dark and bleak confessionals acting as an open diary to the world. Jill Sobule wears her heart on her sleeve and isn’t afraid to share. Delving into tales of love and loss, on stage Sobule brings a state of raw vulnerability coupled with an abundance of pure emotion. Delivering powerful performances time after time, she speaks straight to the hearts of the crowd. With an extensive catalogue of material, full of charisma shining through her witty and mostly brutally honest lyrics, makes for an unforgettable show.

Last night's show in Pittsburgh was a favorite. I have seen Jill Sobule in concert a number of times over the years, and the shows are always good.
Last night she seemed to be in a particularly good mood, and it came across in her performance. We had the chance to hear her new organ pedal (which I am sure there is a name for) and some funky music as a result.
Club Cafe is a small venue, and it always seems like Jill Sobule is really just singing to you. In fcat, I asked my wife on the ride home if she felt like that and the response was an emphatic "YES!" I don't think I have seen anyone else who is as personable in concert.
Looking forward to the new album!
Ms. Sobule's performance was topical, intelligent, sophisticated, and highly musical, a stellar performance. She interacted nicely with the audience. I enjoyed discussing Stephanie Miller with her. I look forward to seeing her again in the near future.

MC5 to Kick Out the New Jams on Upcoming Tour, First Album in Over 50 Years
By Jon Blistein
Jon Blistein
Punk pioneers MC5 are plotting a big return in 2022, with Wayne Kramer and Co. announcing a handful of tour dates this spring and the band’s first album in over 50 years, set to arrive in October.
MC5 will return to the road May 5 with a hometown show at El Club in Detroit. From there, the band will play shows in Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and Brooklyn, before heading out to the West Coast for a run that wraps May 15 at Soda Bar in San Diego.
Tickets for the shows will go on sale this Friday, March 11, and full information is available on Kramer’s Facebook page. During the tour, MC5’s lineup will comprise founding guitarist Wayne Kramer along with singer Brad Brooks, drummer Stephen Perkins, bassist Vicki Randle, and guitarist Stevie Salas.
Prior to the tour, MC5 will release two songs, marking Kramer’s first under the MC5 moniker since 1972. The A-side, “Heavy Lifting,” is a new tune featuring Tom Morello, Don Was, Abe Laboriel, Jr., and lead vocals from Brooks (a preview is available below). The B-side will be a new version of “Edge of the Switchblade,” a tribute to the MC5’s early years that appeared on Kramer’s 1995 solo album, The Hard Stuff; the new recording features Laboriel, Was, and Alice in Chains’ William Duvall on lead vocals.
While Kramer has released plenty of solo music in the decades since MC5, he tells Rolling Stone via email that returning to the group after so long forced him to “zero in on a definition of the MC5’s message. Of course, I’ve talked about it for 50 years but to actually write music that’s true to the legacy of the band was a different challenge. I mean, it’s easy to say the MC5’s message is, ‘Fuck the man; let’s party!’ but I think there’s more to it than that. The band represents unlimited possibilities for a new music, a new lifestyle, a new politics, and that includes a necessity for wholehearted commitment to positive action. Then, considering all of that and translating it into songs has been fun and a formidable undertaking.”
To make the MC5’s new LP — which will be their first proper studio effort since 1971’s High Time — Kramer collaborated with an array of songwriters including Morello, Kesha, Jill Sobule, Tim McIlrath, and Alejandro Escovedo. He also teamed up with go-to rock producer Bob Ezrin.

“To work with writers as varied as Tim McIlrath from Rise Against or Jill Sobule or Alejandro Escovedo is just an outgrowth of the band’s core ideology,” says Kramer, who describes that ethos as “inclusive, not exclusive.” He continues, “We are all part of the same mindset, living in the same world, and we all want to make a difference. Each collaborator to a person has helped me to relay that message. Also, my songwriting with Brad Brooks has really been a therapeutic process … for both of us. And then to layer Bob Ezrin on top added a whole new layer of complexity that then widened my scope and my ideas even further.”
Along with their tour and prepping new music, MC5 were once again nominated for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame this year. This marks the group’s sixth nomination, and they’ll be vying for a spot alongside the likes of Eminem, Dolly Parton, Lionel Richie, A Tribe Called Quest, Carly Simon, Beck, Judas Priest, Rage Against the Machine, Fela Kuti, and more.

Man found dead after fire in ct house; police investigating, news connecticut news, singer jill sobule says the twain house is the ‘best house concert on earth’.
Sobule may still be best known for her mid-’90s singles “I Kissed a Girl” (not the later Katy Perry song of the same name) and “Supermodel” (found on the “Clueless” movie soundtrack), but has made more than a dozen albums and is about her to premiere her own off-Broadway musical. She’s collaborated with such sterling fellow singer-songwriters as John Doe (X), Richard Barone (The Bongos), Lloyd Cole (The Commotions) and “Saturday Night Live” alum Julia Sweeney.
The Courant talked to Sobule about her love for both Mark Twain and his house, some of the impressive acts she’s opened for, and her impending New York musical “F*ck 7th Grade.”
You’ve played the Mark Twain House many times, but not in a while.
I haven’t been since COVID but I’ve done it half a dozen times. They keep inviting me back, and it’s the best house concert on planet Earth. I’m singing in front of Mark Twain’s fireplace in the living room or whatever they call it, the salon. It’s where he would tell stories to his kids before bedtime. I wonder if there’s a way they could let me spend the night there. They’re pretty great.
Have you been playing out a lot?
I just got off tour. Of all things, I was opening up for The Fixx. I got on so well with the band. They were so sweet, so unpretentious. They’ve been together since the early ’80s. On the last night, they invited me onstage to sing the last song with them, and they gave me a gift, and I almost cried.
Now I’m coming to New York to do a couple of these shows and then, in October, I’m doing my musical “F*ck 7th Grade” in the East Village. Everyone in Connecticut’s gotta come to New York to see my play.
Have you done theater before?
I had a show called “Prozak and the Platypus” that I did a bunch of places and did in Connecticut once. The weird thing is I’ve been writing for theater for the last few years, and over the summer the Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles asked me to be in a musical, not my own, and I hadn’t done that since 5th grade. [“The Wicked Soul of Cherry Hill” by Matt Schatz had its world premiere in June.] It was terrifying, but I always find that no matter how old you get, you should always try new things.
But this one is really kind of my story, my songs. I’m the star of my own play. I have to memorize lines, and even though they’re me, it’s still hard. I’ve never been able to remember my own lyrics. It’s always been that way. I’m using new parts of my brain, I guess.
Where do you live these days?
That’s a really good question! I’m kind of in storage-locker land. I was in Los Angeles during most of COVID and now I’m coming back to New York to do the play and everything and I’m making my decision on where I’m going to stay. One or the other, or maybe someplace new. It’s a wonderful new stage in my life.
Do you ever play with a band, or are you doing mostly solo shows?
Mostly solo. For the play, I have a band. I love doing Connecticut because if I’m in New York I can just drive back.
I tour (Twain House) every time I’ve gone. One thing about touring is that I try to make it so I have extra days so I can go do things. I like being a tourist. A lot of musicians don’t take advantage of that. I remember when I was on tour with Billy Bragg in Europe, all the crew guys would sleep in and Billy and I would get up early and go to museums. Otherwise, you’re just in a green room and a motel room.
You’ve toured with some amazing people.
I’ve toured with some incredible people, and I don’t know how that happened. Warren Zevon, Joe Jackson, Robyn Hitchcock, Billy Bragg, The Fixx, Paul Weller… for some reason, the older Brits really like me.
Sounds like the new musical is the big deal right now, but have you also been writing and recording new songs?
I just recorded, a couple of weeks ago, a little EP. I love this idea of doing a bunch of EPs with different sounds, vibes and things, so I just did using a kind of a jazz trio of upright bass, piano and drums. I didn’t want to sound like I was doing some of my old classics, but I took a few of my old songs because I liked the sound of my voice with the piano. We’re just mixing it now, so I hope we’ll have a couple of things to be working on and getting out after the play is done.
Are you going to record the songs from the musical?
I’d say that half the songs are songs I’ve had already. A lot of it is autographical. I realized a lot of my songs have to do with the angst and horror of going through junior high or high school. There are songs like “Underdog Victorious,” “Strawberry Gloss”… That’s how the idea started, with someone saying “God, you must have had a horrible middle school experience based on these songs of yours.”
Freud got it wrong. It’s not the first few weeks [that determine your life]. It’s 7th grade that f–ks you up. I started coming up with a piece, and writing more songs for it. It’s a small theater, it’s comfortable, and tell me if I f–k up it’s OK, right? Right.
What else are you up to?
Starting a detective agency, playing pro football … but none of that’s true. I don’t know what I’m doing after November. So maybe I’ll go somewhere fun for a couple of weeks. That’s all. That’s all I’ve been thinking about.
Are you a fan of Mark Twain?
Oh, yeah! What a wit. I loved his travel stuff. But this was, and is, the coolest house concert I’ve ever had. I at a bed and breakfast where — who was the woman who chopped up her father and mother? Lizzie Borden! In New Bedford. I had a few friends there and played. But I’ll take the Mark Twain over Lizzie Borden any day. A much better vibe.

Jill Sobule in concert | Jan. 6–8 and 13, 2022
Long before Katy Perry was playing gay for MTV airplay, Jill Sobule turned her 1995 single “I Kissed a Girl” into an unlikely hit from an actually bisexual artist. Since then, Sobule has continued to turn out excellent folk-pop tunes with a sardonic storytelling edge. Just give a listen to the lilting Americana and looking-back musings on her most recent album, the excellently reviewed “Nostalgia Kills,” or lend your ear to her latest topical, country-twinged ditty, “You Better Not F**k in Texas,” which takes aim at restrictive anti-abortion laws in the Lone Star State. And then, afterwards, pucker up for an evening with one of the LGBTQ community’s quirkiest and cleverest (and most lovable) musicians.

GOODNIGHT MOONSHINE
Folk-pop partnership Goodnight Moonshine provides meaningful insight into the human experience with their new single, “Harder Than It Should Be”. The couple, Molly Venter (of Red Molly) and Eben Pariser (of Roosevelt Dime), deftly examine the imperfections and unavoidable disillusionment that have dominated the last few years in a captivatingly honest performance both musically and lyrically.
While Venter penned “Harder Than It Should Be” during the Kavanaugh confirmation hearings, it resonates powerfully with the current socio-political landscape of a world in flux as the COVID-19 pandemic drastically shifts all facets of global human existence.
Goodnight Moonshine pairs the intimacy and immediacy of the 90's with the sonic explosion of the 60's. Molly Venter is a viscerally potent singer, à la Fiona Apple and Tracy Chapman, whose songwriting is redemptive and playful. Consummate musician and producer Eben Pariser, is a devotee of Ray Charles, Wes Montgomery, The Beatles and The Band; as well as a powerful singer-songwriter in his own right. Courageous unveiling and depth of experience make the collaboration between married couple Molly Venter and Eben Pariser addictively captivating.
Molly Venter's voice bends from a sweet moan to a gritty shout and back into a playful run in the space of a few bars and "it all goes down like silk," writes American Songwriter Magazine - "few singers turn first time listeners into eternal fanatics as effortlessly as Molly Venter." The emotional potency of her voice is surrounded and supported by a lush landscape of harmonies and minimalist orchestrations conceived by Eben, on vocals and electric guitar. Co-writing often, the couple uses the creative process to explore a healthy authentic relationship. Both wholesome and irreverent, they sing of grief and joy in equal measure; Molly gives smooth delivery to Eben's assertions while Eben gives form and focus to Molly's raw passion. Their music encourages listeners to embrace opposing desires, to challenge as well as support each other through inspiration and dissolution, and hopefully to share this journey with their larger communities.
Venter’s voice has caught the ear of industry giants, and been prominently featured on FOX television, Apple Computers and in Warner Brothers films. Molly and Eben’s Co-write "Willow Tree" was a #1 hit on the folk charts in 2014 and was featured in USA Today. Consummate performers, Molly and Eben have also appeared nationally and internationally, 100+ shows a year, with their respective bands Red Molly and Roosevelt Dime. Goodnight Moonshine tours with their four-year old son Otis.

Why travel to Moscow
Contrasts: 12th century monasteries and some of the tallest skyscrapers in Europe can be found side-by-side in this complex and captivating city. The diversity of this mega-city is astounding. Only a few steps away from the solemn red facade of the Kremlin and the sounds of righteous church bells, a buzzing night scene and alternative-fashion boutiques can be found.
Culture: In Moscow only the best goes. Be it a theatre, restaurant or gallery, the standards are certain to be world-class. The Bolshoi ballet company is reputed to be even better than the Mariinsky’s and “MMOMA” (Moscow’s museum of modern art) exhibits works of art as profound as any that could be found in the famed MOMA.
Convenience: Unlike the rest of Russia, it’s easy enough to get by with just English in Moscow and, driving excepted, it is surprisingly safe: the murder rate is lower than in some of America’s major cities.

Why visit Moscow
It would take more than two days to walk around the perimeter of the biggest city in Europe, Moscow. Many of its inhabitants barely know what’s beyond the few blocks around their flat and there are so many attractions that it’s almost impossible to know where to start. If there is such a thing as an antidote to boredom, Moscow City is it. The mind-boggling range and diversity of things to do, places to eat, parks, historical monuments and more means that a vacation in Moscow has a wealth of activities to offer for every type of traveler, from young families to retirees.
Reasons to Vacation in Moscow in 2022
The Bolshoi theatre is familiar to almost everyone as Russia’s grandest theatre, but what people don’t know is that there are many more bolshoi (big) sites in Moscow that are worth travelling all the way to Moscow to see. For more than 100 years, the world’s biggest bell has been hidden behind the Kremlin’s walls and inside Moscow’s main park (which is bigger than some countries!) there is the world’s largest outdoor ice-rink. Travelers that visit Moscow can stay at the Izmailovo, Europe’s biggest hotel, then eat at the largest and most historic McDonald’s in Europe and after that have fun at the largest European indoor theme park!
Ancient Past & Stunning Architecture:
As those who travel to Moscow will see, just because Moscow is a city of record-breaking, glitzy high-rises doesn’t mean that there is no history. On the famous Arbat street, time-worn, wooden storehouses and century-old churches are squashed up against grey, soviet blocks which are then towered over by 21st century office-blocks. Unlike its much younger sibling, St Petersburg, Moscow’s roots stretch way back to the 12th century. Within the walls of the Kremlin, the city’s oldest building the Cathedral of Assumption can be admired in all its 500+ years of age.
Culture & Convenience
For a foreigner who has never visited Russia, Moscow is the perfect stepping stone into this great land of mystery. From the country’s best classical ballet troupes to snow-white troikas trotting through the parks, all the highlights of Russian culture can be had in Moscow without any of the complications that would be expected in other, less developed regions of Russia.
Cheap as Caviar
In Moscow, everything is bargain when with the current foreign exchange rates being what they are. Even caviar doesn’t seem so dear when the exchange rate is at 60rub to the dollar, so go on indulge yourself! Take your 2022 vacation in Moscow and have the best of both worlds, with European luxury at very affordable prices.
Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.
Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.
We had a great time both in Moscow and St Petersburg. Your travel agency was excellent in coordinating the whole trip. Everything worked like clockwork. The guides assigned to us were very nice and friendly. They had a great knowledge of their subjects. The cars and the drivers were great. The hotels were good and the itinerary was good. All in all, it was a wonderful experience. It was nice dealing with you and your company. Thank you very much for a great Russian experience. Have a great future ahead
