In difficult terrain above the home of television’s “Last of the Summer Wine”, a huge amount of effort has gone into planting a vineyard and building a small winery, restaurant, shop and stylish self catering apartments at Holmfirth.

Although early days for wine production, the amount of thought, care and sheer hard work that has gone into this venture is such that we wouldn’t bet against good wine being produced in future. Meanwhile, it’s well worth visiting for the quality of the restaurant and tours alone.

Yorkshire Wine at Holmfirth Vineyard

Who owns Holmfirth Vineyard?

Holmfirth Vineyard is owned by husband and wife team Rebecca and Ian Sheveling. Originally coming from a background in design, this ambitious pair decided to take a gamble on establishing a vineyard in West Yorkshire. Despite the challenges of growing grapes in Yorkshire, their efforts clearly paid off!

About Holmfirth Wine

Naturally, you would struggle to find grapes that are hardy enough to grow in the Yorkshire climate. The area isn’t exactly renowned for soaring temperatures and sunny days! But to overcome this, Holmfirth wine uses hybrid grapes that are specifically designed for less sunny environments.

Instead of merlot, pinot grigio and syrah, Holmfirth Vineyard grow grapes such as solaris, seyval, red rondo and regent, which were created for colder and more variable weather conditions.

Holmfirth Vineyard Wines

Because the grapes grown at Holfirth Vineyard are speciality grapes for the region, they aren’t names you’d recognise and you can’t pick them up from the supermarket. Holmfirth Vineyard currently makes approximately 9,000 bottles of wine per year but hosts around 20,000 visitors, so they are in high demand!

The Holmfirth Vineyard wines are light, fruity and perfect for summer days and entertaining. Here are the wines produced by Holmfirth Vineyard:

Solaris White – a fruity dry white wine with notes of apples, pears and floral elderflower.

Regent Rose – a medium dry rose wine with notes of strawberries and raspberries.

Regent Red – a soft red wine with notes of blackberries and bramble.

I’m so glad you like the guide! Thanks for reading!

I’m back in the north of England now so I will definitely be giving this a go! I hadn’t thought to visit a winery while I’m in England so thanks for the tip!

Ah what a great excuse for a visit! It had never occurred to me to look for local vineyard – I didn’t even know we had any! It was a great day out though, we had so much fun! And the wines and afternoon tea were absolutely delicious!

I have to admit that I would not think of wine when I thought of Yorkshire beverages. But great to know that the Holmfirth Vineyard is worth a visit if we are in the area. They have some varietals I had not heard of before so great to taste these hardy versions. And since we love the Afternoon Tea experience, we would plan to do that too. A great suggestion.

Holmfirth Vineyard is a lovely day out if you find yourself in the area! It was great tasting some of the wines we’ve never tried before! And you definitely don’t want to miss the afternoon tea, that is such a treat!

Hi Hannah. You are very correct in that I would never have thought of Yorkshire as a wine-producing region. It is awesome that they were able to find a way to make it work. I bet I would love the Regent Red. The vineyard itself looks so beautiful along with view of Holmes Valley. Thank you for sharing.

It is crazy that they went to so many lengths to create grapes that will grow in Yorkshire! But what an incredible treat, to have local wines! I’ve given a few as gifts and they have been very well received! The vineyard is in a beautiful spot and the views are stunning! We had a wonderful day out here, I definitely recommend a visit!

I love vineyards! And this one sounded like it was unique in many ways (:

Itt is definitely a one-of-a-kind place! I hope you get an opportunity to visit!

Really loved reading the post on Holmfirth vineyard, and it’s exclusive collection of wines. Happy to see that you had a wonderful wine tasting experience. I would love to visit it.

I definitely recommend visiting Holmfirth Vineyard if you are ever in the area! The wine is lovely and it was fascinating learning about how it is made. Plus, the afternoon tea was delicious! I hope you get an opportunity to visit!

Oh this vineyard isn’t super far from where I live, and it sounds like a unique experience. I’m no wine expert, but I enjoy a glass or two, plus who could say no an afternoon tea in such a beautiful settings.

Holmfirth is such a beautiful place and the vineyard is incredible! It is well worth a day trip to explore it and enjoy the wine and afternoon tea!

I’m always up for wine tasting and Holmfield looks so cute. But the part I life most is how they do an afternoon tea. You don’t see that at most vineyards!

The afternoon tea is delicious! I was sold on the afternoon tea, the wine was an added bonus! It was a wonderful day out, I’ll definitely be going back for more afternoon tea and wine!

This place looks amazing! Def need to plan a trip there!

It was a great day out! I can’t wait to go back and to explore other local vineyards too!

Wineries are so much fun! This is such a great guide. Thanks for sharing.

I agree! We had a wonderful day out! I’d love to explore more local ones! Thanks for reading!

You totally read my mind, because I definitely didn’t expect there to be wineries in the UK! I expected the cold climate to be impossible, but that’s so cool that they’ve got a hybrid able to thrive in such weather. I think a wine tasting and afternoon tea make for a perfect day, both things I’ve yet to experience in England. Btw, your blog is totally growing my wanderlust for England, and since my boyfriend and I want to visit next year so I can see his city, Liverpool, I now have a handful of other pit stops I’ll be demanding we make during the trip!

It’s crazy isn’t it? There’s a lot more than I ever imagined there would be! Ooh you’ll definitely have to add wine tasting and afternoon tea to your England bucket list! You’ll also be glad to hear that Holmfirth isn’t all that far from Liverpool! You could totally make a trip over to Yorkshire on your visit! I’m so pleased to hear you’re feeling inspired to explore England! Thanks for reading!

Who would have thought?? A vineyard in Yorkshire. I have a somewhat intimate relationship with Newcastle Brown, but Yorkshire wine? Hats off to the Shevelings for taking the plunge. I love the idea of a tour, wine tasting, topped off with a leisurely afternoon tea.

Haha! I definitely think it is the stubborn Yorkshire nature – if someone tells us something can’t be done, it only makes us more determined to do it! It is such an interesting place to visit. The wine and afternoon tea are also divine – I strongly recommend!

Wow I never knew there were wine tastings in Yorkshire, but I’m definitely adding it to my to do list now!

I know, right?? I was impressed when I discovered this too! I definitely recommend a visit if you ever find yourself in Yorkshire!

Whaaaaat!? Vineyards in Yorkshire!? I honestly had no idea this was in Holmfirth. I visited here years ago when my friends got married in Holmfirth, but I somehow totally missed this.

The countryside in that area is stunning, so I’d be happy to go back to visit again (and include afternoon tea and local wines next time!)

It’s crazy, isn’t it? The wine was lovely and the tour was so entertaining! It’s such a beautiful area, and wine is always a great excuse to come back, right?
