Some are centuries old celebrations, such as Il Palio, an elaborate horse race in Siena, Italy. Others are more recent in vintage, such as San Francisco's annual Gay Pride Parade. And of course, many are indeed great fun, such as Rio's Carnaval, New Orleans' Mardi Gras, and Spain's chaotic Tomato Festival, in which everyone pelts each other with juicy red fruit. Special events may include Christmas Markets in Germany or New England fall foliage tours. Whatever your favorite festival or event, a good tour will take you there.

Festivals can be among the most memorable and colorful experiences in travel.

Whether you’re shouting “Hey, Mister, throw me some….” as the krewe floats pass by at Mardi Gras in New Orleans; watching a solemn religious procession at Semana Santa in Seville, Spain; downing way too much beer at an Oktoberfest tent in Bavaria, Germany; or checking out the wares at India’s exotic Pushkar Camel Fair, festivals can be fun and frenetic but also fascinating, by serving as a window into the very heart of a culture.

They can also be just plain wacky or offbeat, such as Spain’s La Tomatina (tomato-throwing) or South Korea’s Boryeong Mud Festival (mud play).

Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival, Harbin, China. This is the world’s largest snow and ice sculpture festival and, appropriately, features the largest actual sculptures as well. Starting in early January each year, it runs for an entire month. Harbin is in northeast China, and, perhaps needless to say, is cold in winter, but the festival attracts hundreds of thousands of spectators.

Quebec Winter Carnival, Quebec City, Canada. Quebec’s two-week-long Winter Carnival, which typically starts in late January and runs into February, is a celebration of all things snow: It’s the world’s largest winter carnival and ranks third for all carnivals after those in Rio and New Orleans (Mardi Gras). Winter sports, dogsled races, snow sculptures, an ice hotel and more are featured.

Carnaval, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Extravagantly designed yet skimpy costumes, samba dancing, and a certain degree of licentiousness mark Rio’s Carnaval, held in the week leading up to Ash Wednesday and the 40 days of Lenten sacrifice. This is the place to drop your inhibitions and let yourself go, in the company of a million other visitors. Since Carnaval dates are tied to Easter, they differ each year and may extend into March.

Mardi Gras, New Orleans, Louisiana. With similar timing to Carnaval, Mardi Gras culminates in a parade of brilliantly decorated floats sponsored by a variety of krewes (clubs). Krewe members typically toss out beads and candy to spectators, who have also been known to imbibe a bit on Bourbon Street.

Chinese New Year, San Francisco, California (and many other cities around the world with large Chinese populations, including, of course, in China). Chinese New Year, which varies with the lunar calendar and sometimes falls in March, is celebrated by lots of noise (firecrackers), color (lion and dragon dances), gift-giving, and traditional feasting. It lasts about two weeks and culminates in parades and visits to family and friends.

St. Patrick’s Day, throughout Ireland and New York City and Boston, Massachusetts . Ireland’s patron saint, who is said to have converted the island to Christianity, is honored by parades and freely flowing green beer. It falls annually on March 17.

Semana Santa and Feria de Sevilla, Seville, Spain . Seville’s Semana Santa – or Holy Week leading up to Easter – is marked by processions of huge religious floats carried by bearers and followed by hundreds of penitents. Seville’s Fair, also known as the April Fair, follows two weeks later, and is a week-long party of all-night eating and drinking. Many local women and men wear traditional dress – think flamenco costumes – and ride around in decorated carriages. Dates vary along with Easter.

Cinco de Mayo (May 5) is holiday time in Mexico , but it’s actually celebrated more fervently in areas of the U.S. with large Mexican populations, especially California and the Southwest. Parades, mariachis, Mexican foods, and margaritas are a big part of the mix. It commemorates a victory in battle over the French in 1862.

White Nights Festival, St. Petersburg, Russia . Centered around evening ballet, opera, orchestral and popular music performances, the White Nights Festival actually extends from late May through mid-July, but includes all of June, when sunlight lasts well into the night. Carnivals and costume parties round out the festivities.

Fiesta de San Fermin (“Running of the Bulls”), Pamplona, Spain. Made famous by Ernest Hemingway in The Sun Also Rises , San Fermin draws up to a million visitors per year Attendance is exciting but dangerous if you’re actually running with the bulls and not just spectating; one or more people get gored almost every year. The bulls run daily from July 7-14 each year.

Montreal Jazz Festival, Montreal, Canada . The world’s largest jazz festival attracts some of the biggest names in music to this ten-day event, which draws two million visitors and 3,000 musicians for 1,000 shows, both indoor and outdoor, many of them free. The festival typically starts in late June and runs through the first week of July.

Boryeong Mud Festival, Boryeong, South Korea . Situated each summer in the little beach town of Boryeong south of Seoul, this nine-day festival is all about the mud: mud sliding, mud games, mud massages, mud swimming, mud bathing. It’s South Korea’s most popular festival for international visitors; dates vary.

Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Scotland . The world’s largest arts festival, the Fringe Festival takes place over three weeks in some 300 venues around Edinburgh – currently more than 50,000 performances of more than 3,200 shows per year. Drama, comedy, dance, music – if it’s the arts, it’s here.

Palio di Siena, Siena, Italy . The Palio is one of the world’s most historic and colorful horse races, with costumed bareback riders representing ten different areas of the city competing in the Piazza del Campo, Siena’s beautiful central square. With origins dating back to the 6 th century, it now takes place on August 16 and July 2 each year. Parades and other festivities extend over four days, culminating in the race itself.

Oktoberfest, Munich and other cities in Bavaria, Germany. It may seem strange that Oktoberfest begins in September, but it’s too much fun to wait—and the weather’s better. Mostly it’s about drinking beer, singing, eating sausages and general merrymaking in big groups seated in roomy tents or beer halls. This goes on from mid-September to early October, and has for more than 180 years.

Diwali, throughout India and various other countries with large Indian populations . Diwali is an ancient five-day Hindu celebration marked by gift-giving, candle lighting, and – most visible and audible to visitors – firecrackers. While dates can change each year, October is the most typical time.

Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, Albuquerque, New Mexico . The world’s largest hot air ballooning festival gets ramped up at dawn for five mornings (out of nine days) in early October. It’s also said to be the world’s most photographed special event, as hundreds of colorful balloons float over the high desert framed by the Sandia Mountains.

Day of the Dead (Dia de las Muertos ), throughout Mexico and other regions with large Mexican populations . The Day of the Dead – marked each year from October 31 to November 2 – is much less morbid than it sounds. Yes, there are visits to cemeteries to honor dead ancestors and lots of skull masks and skeleton costumes, but they are incorporated into parades and other festivities. Oaxaca has some of the best.

Pushkar Camel Fair, Pushkar, India . Even if you’re not in the market for a camel, the six-day Pushkar Camel Fair is one of India’s most colorful spectacles – which is saying a lot. Along with some 11,000 camels and horses for sale, traders and vendors come from all over Rajasthan, among the hundreds of thousands of participants and spectators.

Whirling Dervish Festival, Konya, Anatolia, Turkey . For a week in mid-December (December 10 to 17), some devout adherents of Sufi Islam -- known as whirling dervishes -- perform rhythmic, twirling dances that are meant to transport them into mystical unions with God. In their white outfits with flowing skirts, they are mesmerizing to watch. The dances commemorate a 13 th century Sufi mystic.

These people take care of you from start to finish if you let them! Have toured with more than a few companies over the years I can tell you that our experience with festival was above any of our expectations. We constantly felt a sense of security and aide while also feeling the freedom to do our own thing!!

We purchased a tour in November 2015 for travel in February 2016. We sent our current passport copies to this company per their request for review. We then received the tour schedule right before our trip. We flew to Miami and were scheduled to fly to Ecuador that same night. At the gate, we were told that we could not fly because one of our passports was under 6 months prior to expiration. Over the past three months, since paying for the trip, no message or call from this tour company regarding our passports. We could not fly. We had to go to the Federal Passport Agency the next day and get a new passport. Once our agent started calling this tour company to reschedule by one day, she informed us that we had to pay $400 more for the airline tickets and $650 more for the tour even though nothing was added to the tour. We actually paid that money for the tour being shortened by a day. They felt that it was not their problem as a full service tour company to inform customers of problems that they encountered with their passports (remember, it was no expired - still 3 months left on it). No refunds for hotels that were scheduled 4-5 days out ! We paid for a night we did not use. They also told us that if we did not pay the additional $650, that they would cancel the tour and keep all the money. This is a HORRIBLE tour company that is truly only out to take you money and not to assist you with your tour. They also will not take any responsibility for the problems that they contributed to. DO NOT USE THEM !!! By the end of the first 24 hours of our trip, we had spent an additional $1600 so the trip could continue.

Hi Mr. John H., We recently signed up with YELP and found this post sent from you over 2 years ago. After reviewing your post, we went into length to find information about this case. We found out that this tour was purchased from us from a travel agency in California, We have never had any direct contact with you or your companions about this trip. Furthermore, only the land portion of this trip was purchased through us, the airline tickets were not and we do not know where they were purchased from, you would have to consult with your travel agency about that. This being said, the information you posted is completely incorrect, it has been a negative impact on our agency as we have seen several people reviewing this page and assuming they have left with a bad impression of our company. Upon further investigation we spoke to the ACTUAL tour agency that you did buy this trip from and they were ashamed to see you posted unfairly onto our page and they apologized on your behalf. We are kindly asking you to please remove this post. I am sorry to hear what has happened to you, but we have no blame or fault in this situation of yours. We have been in Business for over 20 years and have an excellent reputation with our tours not to mention the great communication with our clients, we offer tours to Europe, Asia, Middle East, Africa and Latin America and advise very clearly to our clients where and how to find information on passport, visas, Immunizations, etc., for the better enjoyments of our clients trips. This was an amazing tour I'm not a camper, hiker, or outdoorsy person but have always wanted to see Yellowstone. This compact tour gave me the opportunity to experience the best of the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone. Our guide Haley helped make this an easy trip with teaching us how to set up camp, prepare food in the wilderness, and gave lessons about the topography Flora and fauna of the region. I did things I never thought I would like hike up Jenny lake to Hidden falls, see bison, elk, moose, and bears and watch Old Faithful dance. If you're on the fence do it it's 4 days of the most amazing countryside.

Exploring Utah's Mighty 5 plus added extra adventures made this tour the BEST!! Bindlestiff Tours made this possible by taking time to listen to the details of our families desired interest and coordinated it all for us making this an enjoyable adventure for a family of 8. Our guide, Chloe was the ABSOLUTE BEST and was our highlight in this tour due to her knowledge and showing us the exact prime spots to tour. She hiked every step with us. She became family! Our kids wanted to tour the Arches at night with flashlights and stargaze. With Chloe, she made anything possible and was sure to make this experience happen for us, unforgettable! The views on this trip were breathtaking. Bindlestiff added 3 additional spots of Homestead Crater, Moab UTV Tour, Salt Lake Flats for us as well!! This was my 1st solo group trip & felt safe & comfortable. The tour guide was so friendly, warm & knowledgeable! I really enjoyed my little Mighty 5 adventure!

Our group had a great time exploring the Mighty 5. Our Guide Greg, made sure to keep our group informed and entertained. The vehicle was comfortable for all of the riding that our trip entailed. We really feel like we did and saw the Mighty 5, except, we really thought that we were going to hike the "Narrows." Once we got over that, everyone was good. It was nice that there were separate hiking options based on experience. Even though we were made aware, several times, that we picked the cheapest tour that you all offer, we had no regrets. The motels were basic, but all of the staff were hard working and excellent, and the rooms were clean. I would strongly reccomend this tour if the Might 5 is on your list.

Hallie was an amazing ceo, the cam nigths were very fun, we got so much to see, do much to do, would recommend.

It was a good trip overall. Charlie, the guide was wonderful and very personable. He was always making sure everyone was ok. The lack of a fifth star was due to: 1) the number of few meals included and 2) that one guest had a cold that spread to others, but nothing done to stop it.

Ronnie and I loved the tour. Our guide Rachel, was extremely professional in her work. Full of knowledge about different animals as well as some history lessons. It took me a while, but they are called bison , not buffalo. ? But what really blew my mind, was her keen eye on the landscape as she was driving. She could spot animals very well, and gave us many opportunities to take photos and look through the high powered scope. Rachel is surely a people person, jumping right in there to become friends with strangers, laughing and carrying on with us. Even when we were all getting excited about stopping to see the two grizzly bears mating, questions being tossed at her. She was calm and gave answers and instructions like a mother with her children. ?? Not that we’d tell our young kids what was going on. They were the hugging bears. ?? It pays to ask someone on the road what they are looking at, and that video Rachel captured is priceless. Guys, pay attention! ? She was a very safe driver as we encountered many elements of weather. She also sent us pictures and videos from her scope of the many, many, animals we saw. I would highly recommend this tour, it’s worth every penny. The hotels were awesome and cute, especially in Cooke City Montana. It was as if we were going back to the early days. The restaurants were good and Rachel even recommended good eats. Although the tour was very expensive- over $2000 for 3 days is over the top- it wss a great experience, saw lots of wildlife and the guide was outstanding

Insight Vacations

The 40 seat luxury coach broke down at the end of day 1 of our 9 day Insight Vacations Wonders of the American West coach tour in May. It was replaced for the rest of our tour by a 56 seater coach with significantly less legroom, and seatbelts that didn’t have the side adjuster that enables you to stop the belt rubbing into your neck if you’re a certain body shape. For us, the reason for choosing Insight was their luxury coach, so every day on the 56 seater was a reminder that (to use a flying analogy) we had paid for business class and were getting economy class. We had booked through a travel agent because we’d read the online reviews warning of Insight’s poor communication. The travel agent Freedom Destinations, who supported us, put forward our complaint to Insight. Insight sympathised but cited their terms and conditions that don’t require them to replace the luxury coach with one of the same quality. To an extent I understand that they need to cover themselves for an instance where a luxury replacement isn’t available on the day of the breakdown, but not to provide one at any stage of the remainder of our tour feels like either poor contingency planning or cost-saving. Insight refused our request for a cash payment as compensation. Instead they offered a discount voucher for use on a future trip. We declined the voucher as we do not believe it to be fair to only offer compensation that is dependent upon customers re-using a service, and our faith in their organisation and their coach suppliers Holiday Motor Coach has been broken. Such a shame, because the sights on the trip were wonderful, as were the people we travelled with. 1 star to highlight the risks associated with a breakdown to other potential customers for whom the luxury coach is important.

Overall it was a good experience. Excellent tour director and driver. The food was inconsistent as to quality and service. The lodgings were fine for the type of trip. Too much time was spent at Monument Valley/Mystery valley and not enough time at Grand Canyon.

The trip as a whole was great. Our Tour Director and bus driver were awesome. Our tour director was knowledgeable about the history, geography, flora and fauna of the areas we visited. The itinerary was a good mix of cities and scenery. My only complaint is that I thought the communication with the company before the trip left something to be desired. I spent several hours on the phone in the days immediately before the trip trying to straighten out some things that had gone sideways.

My mother had a medical emergency in the week before and the trip needed to be canceled. Globus refused to reschedule and refund the trip and my parents are now out $5000. In a post covid world, it is inexcusable to not allow people to reschedule or refund canceled tours for unexpected medical emergencies. I will gladly spread the word about how poorly Globus treats their customers.

The itinerary provided by tour radar was not exactly how the tour was set up. One of our stops said we would be doing a cruise on lake Powell. That was not provided with the tour. Also the hotels that they said we would be staying at did not line up.

Overall, the tour was very fun and we'll put together. The tour guides were all friendly, and seemed to work well as a team. Accomodations were not bad, but there were better options directly adjacent. Food options were pretty much all fast food, which makes sense for the tour concept. However, dinner options could have been a bit better. We really would have appreciated a little more hiking and exploring time, and a couple of the guides did the best to accommodate that. However, 20 minute stops are just not enough time to get "out and experience" the areas.

The trip on it self is awesome. The parks we visit were stunning. However as I booked with Tour radar, it was not mention anywhere the level of the trip. I knew during the trip that this same trip is advertised as a compfy trip with intensity 2/5 on intrepid website. I found my self with 65 Y+ while Im 35 Y and for the hikes it was inconvenient. Hope it will change on the marketplace.

We were fortunate to have Claire Kredens as our driver guide. She is a gifted leader and could cope with ant situation. Such a tour is useful to learn which cities you might like to re-visit because our time in each is very short. Four and five hour drives every other day is exhausting and maybe the number of places visited could be edited downward. On the whole, I enjoyed the trip altho the age range 15-99 is unwise. 15-80 would be much more realistic.

leider entsprach der Reiseverlauf nicht ganz der ursprünglichen Ausschreibung. Die kurzen Wanderungen in die Canyons waren gestrichen worden, was insbesondere für das Bryce canyon sehr schade war. Der Ersatz (Death Valley) war dafür lohnenswert. Die Toursprache "only in english" stimmte nicht, Englisch war nachrangig. Ein Großteil der Gruppe sprach kein Englisch, so dass man sich wie ein Aussenseiter fühlte.

Had a wonderful time - a lot of hiking, seeing the sites in Alaska and viewing the Northern Lights.
