Hurtigruten Trip: Route, Ships & our Tips for Norway’s Coast

Rugged Fjords, colourful Norwegian wooden houses and endlessly wide oceans – a Hurtigruten expedition along the Norwegian coast is one of the most beautiful sea trips in the world. We can’t confirm if it really is the best, but one thing is for sure: Our expedition on the Hurtigruten is absolutely one of our top travel highlights.

A trip along the Classic Roundtrip Voyage of the Hurtigruten takes 12 days. 12 days filled with breathtaking scenery, a slower pace and – depending on the season – northern lights or midnight sun.

Perhaps you are considering traveling on a Hurtigruten Ship through Norway? Then you’re in the right place. In this article on our travel blog, we have gathered together all the information you need to plan and prepare for your Hurtigruten trip. In addition, as always, we provide you with our personal travel trips.

1. Hurtigruten Trip: Initial info & FAQs

2. the hurtigruten travel routes [+ info to book], 3. best time to travel, 4. hurtigruten ships & cabin info, 5. prices and costs: how much does a trip with the hurtigruten cost, 6. hurtigruten packing list: what should i take with me.

hurtigruten the world's most beautiful sea voyage

Hurtigruten – what actually is that?

Are you thinking of the German word ‘hurtig’ (quick)? Well, that’s not so far off. ‘Hurtigruten’ translated from Norwegian roughly means ‘the fastest route’ and is the term for the traditional Norwegian postal ship route.

The Hurtigruten were once intended as a means of transport for the post or freight and passengers. Especially in winter, the Hurtigruten were once the fastest way to get from A to B. In the meantime, the trip on the Hurtigruten has become popular amongst tourists. Nevertheless, many locals still use the ships.

The classic Hurtigruten route goes for 12 days (11 nights) along the coast of Norway. It goes from Bergen in the south up north to Kirkenes and eventually back down again to Bergen.

Who is a trip with the Hurtigruten suited towards?

  • Nature: Without a doubt – the number one reason to take a trip with the Hurtigruten is to watch Norway’s scenery go by in such a special way. Spectacular fjords, colourful Norwegian houses and ocean as far as the eye can see – the scenic backdrop is absolutely unique here in the far north.
  • Slow pace & winding down: The nice thing on board is that there is not too much to do – other than enjoy the trip. Anyone who really wants to switch off and calm down is absolutely in the right place on board a Hurtigruten ship.

What is NOT to be expected?

  • Luxury: Or in other words: A trip with the Hurtigruten is no cruise! The cabins are small, the furnishings more basic, the atmosphere on board is cosy, and you can hear noises when the ship is loading. In short: A trip with the Hurtigruten is an experience, but certainly not suited towards someone who wants to compare the standard to that of a cruise.
  • A cheap trip: What we said above would suggest otherwise, but unfortunately the opposite is the case. A trip with the Hurtigruten is an expensive undertaking. Norway is already quite an expensive country to travel to and the Hurtigruten is no exception.
  • Many trips onshore: When you take a look at the travel route of the Hurtigruten trip (We will provide the link further down) then you will quickly realise: You see many places along the coast, but only have time to properly explore a few of them. Therefore, the focus is on experiencing the nature from on board. However, there are some great excursions on offer, through which you can thankfully also experience some of the country. We will reveal more about this later.

Atmosphere & flair: How should I imagine a Hurtigruten trip?

Relaxed, cosy and informal – that describes the atmosphere on board a Hurtigruten ship. You learn to cherish the slower pace. Often you sit hours long on the deck and let the fjord landscape pass you by. (Talking about the deck: You really cannot miss one of the highlights because there is always an announcement over the loudspeaker in advance. For example, the crossing of the Arctic Circle is duly celebrated.)

Fancy and chic are fortunately nowhere to be found on board a Hurtigruten ship. Expedition not cruise is the motto. If an extensive entertainment program or a fine gala dinner is important to you, then you would be far better off on a cruise boat.

We found the Hurtigruten passengers to be very open minded, connected to nature and relaxed. Most were sporty and casually dressed – no one would find it strange if you wore your sweatpants to breakfast. And there was also no need to dress up for dinner – something we found very relaxing!

You notice right away that the people on a Hurtigruten trip value nature. The focus is on the experience, the adventure and the travel itself. The average age of the passengers is somewhat older but that didn’t bother us in the least – in fact just the opposite. We had conversations with incredibly interesting, young-at-heart people.

Classic Roundtrip Voyage: Bergen – Kirkenes – Bergen

When talking about a trip on the Hurtigruten through Norway, this usually refers to the Classic Roundtrip Voyage. This trip with the Hurtigruten takes 12 days (11 nights) and starts in the in the pleasant city of Bergen in the southwest of Norway.

The ship leaves from Bergen direction north, past the northern Polar Circle and reaches Kirkenes after six days. There the ship turns around and returns back again in the direction of Bergen.

The Hurtigruten ship makes its way to countless ports along its trip. (To be precise, there are 34 ports just from south to north!). It usually only makes short stops (often only 10 to 15 minutes), sometimes also for a few hours so that you can see the place or take an excursion on shore.

You can find the exact travel route with all the arrival and departure times for each port here under this link: Travel Route Hurtigruten

Additional info: Other Hurtigruten travel routes

In addition to the classic postal ship route, there are also other worthwhile travel routes through countless countries that you cover on the Hurtigruten ships.

For example, there is also an expedition which partially goes to the ports in Norway along the postal ship route. While on board on this expedition ship (currently the MS Otto Sverdrup), you will travel (from Hamburg) to not all 34, but just some selected ports. An advantage: You have more time in each place and usually travel on a more modern ship. The classic postal ship feeling is probably missing a little bit though.

The expedition to Greenland or the Antarctic must be a very special experience – definitely a lifelong dream that we would like to fulfill one day.

Northbound vs southbound routes (Classic Roundtrip Voyage)

Even though at first glance it looks as though you will travel the same route twice (once direction north and then back south), that’s only partially true.

The time (and length of stay) for each port visited and also the exact route change for the northbound and southbound routes. Therefore, many travellers decide to travel the complete route (Bergen – Kirkenes – Bergen), even though it is of course possible to just book part of the trip (e.g. half the route).

Our tip: If you really only want to travel have of the route then we would suggest traveling the northbound route, i.e. Bergen to Kirkenes. This is for two reasons: One, on the trip north you pass by the imposing Geiranger Fjord (however, only in summer). The other reason is that the nature when you head north always gets more and more spectacular as you go. The more north you get, the more arctic and impressive it is.

How do I book a Hurtigruten trip?

You can book your Hurtigruten trip at your trusted travel agent, or you could also easily book it online on the official website in just a few clicks.

Next you select the travel route of your desire, i.e. either the entire postal ship route or perhaps just one section (e.g. northbound from Bergen to Kirkenes or southbound from Kirkenes to Bergen).

A different ship leaves every day, i.e. if you want to travel on one particular ship then you have to select the correct date for it – but that is shown quite clearly online.

After that you choose your desired cabin. Whether it is inside or outside is a question of price or taste. We personally would opt for an outside cabin. You can now select your cabin of choice based on the deck plan. Alternatively, there is also a cheaper option where you are given your cabin number on arrival. We let you know more about the cabins later on in this blog article. The next step is to choose your trips on shore (more on this soon), and that’s it.

You can book the expedition here: Hurtigruten (official website)

Additional info: Booking your arrival

You book your arrival to the Hurtigruten boat trip separately. It is possible to book with the support of Hurtigruten, but the flights booked via Hurtigruten are often (but not always) more expensive.

Therefore, you can also very easily book the flights yourself. Our tip: It is best to check the flight prices before booking your Hurtigruten expedition – so that you don’t get a nasty surprise.

We really recommend staying a night in Bergen as a buffer. One reason is that you never know of your flight will be delayed and the other reason is that Bergen is a nice city that you should definitely see. Many also spend a night in Bergen at the end of their trip, but that is a matter of taste.

You can search for cheap flights here: Skyscanner

Shore Excursions during a Hurtigruten trip

The trips on shore while on a Hurtigruten trip are like the icing on the cake. Because the ship often only stops in the ports for a short time, the offer to take trips on shore are a good (and also only option) to see more of the country.

It’s not that uncommon that the arrival and departure ports for the trips will be different. This means that the Hurtigruten ship will carry along on its route and you can re-board at a different port after you finish your excursion (e.g. after 5 hours). The trips on shore are really well organised so you don’t need to worry about missing your ship.

Which trips can I book – and how?

The offers are wide-ranging from leisurely city walks to past-paced rides in rubber dinghies. We dare to say that there is really something for everyone – be it relaxed, adventurous or family-friendly. You can read about which trips we recommend in our detailed blog article: The Most Beautiful Hurtigruten Onshore Excursions .

The onshore trips on offer differ depending on season, i.e. in summer some of the trips are different to those in winter. Also good to know: northbound and southbound trips have different onshore trips on offer.

You can either book your trips online (either when booking your trip or later) or also spontaneously onboard the ship. It is better to book the most popular trips with limited spots, or those trips you are really set on doing, from home. Otherwise, we would suggest not to pack your trip full and to decide more spontaneously (depending on weather) when you are there.

Small (or better said, big) downside: The trips on shore are unfortunately fairly expens ive and it’s not unusual for them to cost 200 or even 300 euros per person – and that’s just for a few hours. This is also one reason we suggest limiting your trips on shore to your favourites.

You can search for trips on shore & book them here: Hurtigruten Onshore Excursions

hurtigruten the world's most beautiful sea voyage

Selecting the best time to travel is always a bit tricky. If you ask die-hard Norway fans what the best time to visit is they will say, it has to be all year round.

The fact is that every season is completely different – and this is due to the interesting light. Therefore, which season you choose will depend on your personal preferences.

Winter: Northern lights & polar nights

One of the most popular times to travel is clearly in winter, and that is for one reason: The northern lights! If you want to see the colourful lights dancing across the sky, then you need to come in winter. The northern lights season in Norway stretches from October to March.

During this travel period, the Hurtigruten provides the ‘northern lights promise’. If no northern light sightings are announced over the loudspeaker during your trip, then you can travel again within the next 28 days, with expenses covered by the Hurtigruten.

It is important to know that during some months in winter it can be continuously dark or dusky above the Polar Circle on a Hurtigruten trip. This phenomenon is called the polar night. In some areas north of Polar Circle the sun doesn’t rise for months. (For example, in Tromsø the polar night lasts from the end of November until mid-January).

However, it is not always pitch black but often quite dusky. If you’re not so comfortable with darkness, you might be more interested in taking a trip from the middle/end of February when the days a noticeably longer.

Summer: Midnight sun

The counterpart to the polar night is the midnight sun. Over the period of a few months in some regions north of the Polar Circle the sun shines down from the sky 24/7. For example, at the North Cape (not directly part of the route, but nearby and can be booked as an excursion) this spectacle lasts from mid-May to the end of July.

We ourselves were underway on the Hurtigruten in July and therefore, exactly at the time of the midnight sun. The lighting atmosphere is simply fascinating and a unique experience. However, you should be prepared for the fact that your body may find it difficult to go into sleep mode when it is so bright.

Important to know: You can also encounter rough weather in the middle of summer. It is never properly hot – when we were there in July the temperatures were always between 10 and almost 20 degrees. We often had rain, a lot of wind and luckily also a lot of sunshine. Always keep in mind that you are venturing into the far north and the weather can be quite variable.

Shoulder seasons: Spring & autumn

We were told by a Hurtigruten-pro that spring is also beautiful. For example, during April/May you can watch the sunset for hours. Generally, March is a very popular season because you still have the chance to see the northern lights, but the days are already much longer.

When the weather is stable, autumn is a very colourful travel time. The forests are in colour during September/October and make for a brilliant photo. However, the weather can also be quite rough and stormy.

Mitternachtssonne in Norwegen

The Hurtigruten fleet has around a dozen ships that vary in size, decor, design and age. So the question is: Which ship should I decide on?

If you are more into luxury, then we would suggest taking one of the newer ships or one that has been recently renovated.

One example of this is the MS Spitsbergen. The ship is very tasteful decorated with a lot of wood but also not at all pretentious or overdone. The sauna is also great: It has a large glass window. That means that you can watch the interesting landscape go by while you are in the sauna.

The oldest ship of the fleet is the MS Lofoten, which has been in operation since 1964. Although the ship was modernized in 2003, it is still something for the nostalgic among us. However, from 2021 the MS Lofoten will no longer be part of the fleet.

The new hybrid expedition ships ( MS Fridtjof Nansen and MS Roald Amundsen ) are certainly also an experience but are primarily used for trips to the Arctic and Antarctic and not for the postal ship route.

Cabins onboard the Hurtigruten ships

Important to note in advance: A trip on the Hurtigruten is definitely no luxury cruise – and that goes for the cabins as well. There are some more exclusive cabins with balconies (especially the suites) but that’s not always the case – and also costs accordingly.

The cabins tend to be quite small, the furnishings more functional, but still comfortable. We personally would recommend an outside cabin (not an inside cabin) for you. Speaking from experience, you spend most of the time in public spaces or on the deck, but it is quite nice to be able to look outside from time to time

Important: There are also outside cabins with restricted views (e.g. because a safety boat is hanging in front of it). Some are also located on the promenade deck, i.e. where other guests may be walking in front of your window. There are great plans on the Hurtigruten website so that you can easily find and book your preferred cabin.

Whether you prefer to spend the night on the starboard side (right), or port side (left) is a matter of taste. Important to know: The ship docks on the port side. You can observe the port hustle and bustle better from here, but you also have the disadvantage of hearing the ship’s charging noises better on this side.

hurtigruten the world's most beautiful sea voyage

The bad news first: Norway is one of the most expensive countries to travel to in Europe. And unfortunately a trip on the Hurtigruten is no exception.

There is no single price. The price of your Hurtigruten trip will depend on a few factors. One factor is the question of your travel route. For example there is a large difference if you do the complete postal route (12 days) or just one part of it.

The second important factor is your choice of cabin. Often there are worlds between the cheaper category cabins and the more expensive suites. In addition, the onshore excursions also cost extra, which can be quite pricey. Of course, there are also large differences here: Some do without them completely and others book a lot of onshore trips.

And last but not least, you also need to get to Norway somehow (Bergen in this particular case). Whether or not you find a good deal will also affect the overall price.

Roughly speaking, the price for the stretch from Bergen-Kirkenes (i.e. the postal route one way) is around 1,500 euros per person (fully catered, excluding onshore trips).

hurtigruten the world's most beautiful sea voyage

Some things should always be packed – regardless of season – for a Hurtigruten trip to Norway. This includes:

  • Enough warm clothes (e.g. thermal shirts, fleece shirts, long sleeved shirts, warm sweaters, long trousers; we recommend an onion look – i.e. many thin layers that are as warm as possible.)
  • Jacket (If just one, then this needs to be rain and wind proof.)
  • Beanie & gloves
  • Waterproof, comfortable shoes with good grip
  • Rainproof trousers (We found these to be practical e.g. while kayaking but may not be necessary if you are not planning these kind of trips.)
  • Backpack (ideally waterproof)
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen
  • Swimsuit or swim shorts (for the spa pool)
  • Ear plugs (if you are sensitive to noise – the ship is still docking and departing during the night.
  • And of course, very important: Camera & enough memory cards (and a rainproof case for it)

What you can leave at home with a clear conscious are your fancy clothes. You practically never wear chic clothing or even suits onboard (maybe with the exception of New Year). Concentrate your efforts on selecting clothing that is comfortable and functional.

In summer you can also take sandals and a few lighter clothing items with you. Although on our trip we wore long trousers throughout because it was too fresh otherwise. We would have been more pleased with an additional thick sweater.

In winter it’s definitely worth it to have shoes with a good profile. Some even swear by spikes because it can be quite slippery in the towns. You should definitely also bring a warm winter jacket.

Thank you for the informative posts – we are travelling on MS Richard With in February on the BKB and cannot wait!

Amazing, have a great trip and enjoy the northern lights! :)

Your Blog is excellent. We had a taste of the Hurtigruten expedition in 2018 doing the 2 day round trip from Tromso-Svolvaer-Tromso to experience the midnight sun from another perspective. It was amazing. Next year my friend and I are doing the Classic 12 day Voyage, so have found your Blog interesting. This time its in autumn to see the Northern Lights. Some great tips as well as much info that we have found during our research. We are saddened to see the Midnight Concert at the Arctic Cathedral in Tromso and Breakfast at Nordkapp are not available. Thankyou for sharing your experience

Hello Dianne, Thank you so much for your comment! Autumn is surely an amazing season, wow. :) Are you sure that there is no Midnight Concert at the Arctic Cathedral in autumn? (It’s only on the southbound route I guess.) We wish you a memorable trip! Fingers crossed for Northern Lights. :) All the best Kathi & Romeo

Is this the world’s most beautiful voyage?

Hurtigruten’s Norwegian Coastal Express has been dubbed the ‘world’s most beautiful voyage’. For good reason. And now there’s an additional incentive to enjoy this epic adventure – book one passenger, and the second travels for half price.

Norway may be small in land size, but it has an immense coast. It’s the second longest in the world, in fact, spanning more than 100,000 kilometres. If you stretched it out, it would circle the world two and a half times.

Needless to say, the best way to take the pulse of the Scandinavian country is from the water aboard a Hurtigruten ship.

hurtigruten the world's most beautiful sea voyage

A beautiful voyage through history

The Norwegian-flagged line has been cruising the coast here for almost 130 years. It connects communities and reveals the natural drama and colourful ports of the country to passengers from across the planet.

The original voyage is the Hurtigruten Norwegian Coastal Express , dubbed ‘the world’s most beautiful voyage’. Think yawning fjords dotted with glaciers that twinkle like gems. Soaring snow-dusted mountains. Far-flung islands where the aurora borealis colours the sky in winter, and the Midnight Sun glows throughout summer. A landscape of polar bears, whales and dainty reindeer…

This is the Norway that postcards were made for, the backdrop for thriving Indigenous culture and a just as fascinating food scene.

And now, you have an added incentive to enjoy the world’s most beautiful voyage: 50% off the rate of the second guest.

Three reasons to book the world’s most beautiful voyage

To be honest, we could have called this ‘100 reasons to book the world’s most beautiful voyage’. There’s no limit to Norway’s environmental and cultural splendour. But here are three things to inspire your immediate travels.

1. As authentic as it gets

Hurtigruten was born on the Norwegian coast. The company has navigated its fjords, explored its islands, admired its mountains, and braved its weather every day, every season, and every year for almost 130 years.

You can be sure no one knows the coast and its attractions better . Not to mention the communities that call this spectacular part of the world home. In fact, Hurtigruten has been connecting and sustaining remote coastal communities up and down the length of Norway since it floated its first ship.

Lisbon: The 'accidental' capital of cool

This heritage doesn’t come lightly. Hurtigruten’s newest ambassadors take pride waving to villagers, knowing their presence here is bolstering businesses while protecting the planet.

This environment is as fragile as it is beautiful, and Hurtigruten is a steward when it comes to ensuring it will stay this way for future generations. The company has the strictest eco-credentials at sea, from its ground-breaking ships to its passion for inspiring guests to become environmental ambassadors.

Hurtigruten was one of the first major companies to ban single-use plastic throughout their fleet, in 2018. More recently, Hurtigruten initiated one of Europe’s largest environmental ship upgrades. With three of their seven coastal ships being converted to hybrid-powered ships (following suit of their sister brand  Hurtigruten Expeditions  introducing the world’s first hybrid in 2019), guests can look forward to greener sailings.

2. Partnerships that go the distance

Whether at mealtime or when exploring the land, Hurtigruten has always been committed to cultivating strong relationships with Norwegian suppliers. Like that fisherman whose sustainable, line-caught Arctic char turns up on your dinner plate one evening. Or the Sami villagers who welcome you to their community to learn about Indigenous culture.

It makes sense – more than ever. Travellers want to know that they’re leaving a minimal footprint when exploring. They want to contribute to the future of artisan growers, makers, producers and communities.

Best practice experiences are de rigueur, from Hurtigruten’s included and optional seasonal excursions, to its delicious food made from locally sourced ingredients thanks to the Norway’s Coastal Kitchen concept. Did you know that 80% of the company’s on-board food and beverages comes from a network of 50 hand-picked Norwegian suppliers?

3. Talent and expertise

It’s not just Hurtigruten’s founders who are passionate about Norway. Many of the company’s current generation of employees grew up along the very coast you’re cruising. Most will tell you about the first time they stepped aboard a Hurtigruten ship to enjoy the world’s most beautiful voyage as a kid.

Regardless of their background – whether a photographer, marine biologist, geologist or anthropologist – Hurtigruten’s enthusiastic on-board Coastal Experts bring their wealth of knowledge to every journey, enhancing your experience with treasured insights.

The Classic voyage

The coastal fleet consists ofseveral unique ships, all which have daily departures. A classic one way voyage takes 6 days , and the full round trip takes 12 days, visiting the ports of call twice. You will experience different views and places on a full round trip, as you visit the them on a different time schedule.

New cruises in 2023

Two cruises and routes have recently been added that let you explore the northern tip of the world on a refurbished ship.

Between late September and April, you can keep an eye out for the northern lights on The North Cape Express , and cruise all the way between Oslo and the North Cape and back to Bergen for the first time.

You can also cruise under the midnight sun between late April and August, when The Svalbard Express  relaunches its iconic 'sports route'  from Bergen to Svalbard and back . Follow the Norwegian coast all the way north to the North Cape before crossing over to Svalbard, and returning past the Lyngen Alps on the way back.

See the sailing route and learn more about The Svalbard Express .

On both cruises, you can visit many of the same highlights as on the original Hurtigruten Coastal Express, as well some exciting and lesser known destinations. You also get to spend longer time in the ports than on the regular Hurtigruten cruises — up to six hours. 15 day and 7 day cruises are available.

International routes

Starting in 2023 you can visit the Norwegian coastline and steam all the way up to the North Cape, starting your journey outside Norway.  MS Maud sails from Dover in the UK, while Otto Sverdrup  departs from Hamburg, Germany.

Experience local life

With beautiful and majestic nature waiting around every corner, life on board is an incredible experience. But if you really want to experience the Norwegian coast , it's the excursions that truly make this journey unique.

With 34 ports to visit and more than 90 excursions to choose from , you never have to worry about being bored on your journey in the Arctic.

Join a king crab safari, meet the Sami people, or try dog sledding with eager Huskies. Experience standing at the end of the world on the North Cape, look a sea eagle in the eye while exploring the Trollfjord, or go kayaking in the beautiful fjords in Fjord Norway. Learn more about Hurtigruten’s excursions.

Choose your favourite season

In the winter, from October to March, you can see the northern lights dancing across the Arctic skies. Hurtigruten even has a Northern Lights Guarantee , meaning if the northern lights do not appear within sight of your ship, you can get a new voyage free of charge !

In long periods during the summer, you can stay up on deck all night, as you can get  24 hours of daylight, thanks to the midnight sun .

Which light you want to see – and how you want to see it – is entirely up to you and the season you choose.

Taste the delicious Coastal Kitchen

Norway’s culinary traditions are strongly linked to the nature along the coast: fresh, characteristic, and full of variation. On board Hurtigruten, you will experience Norway’s Coastal Kitchen, a culinary concept that is based on close cooperation with local suppliers who provide fresh ingredients of the highest quality every day.

When Hurtigruten won the prestigious Matmerk award for “Norwegian on the menu” the jury wrote: “None of our big tourist operators have put local Norwegian food on the menu to such a degree. The fact that you can eat your way through the Norwegian coast, presented with good descriptions, great stories, and amazing imagery, is something any culinary and language enthusiast will appreciate.”

The chefs on board are very creative in composing variations on both new and traditional Norwegian dishes. With its culinary concept, Hurtigruten is not only supporting local fishermen, farmers, and other suppliers along the coast, it is also ensuring that its guests have some unique culinary experiences to tell their friends and families about.

Hurtigruten's MS Nordlys sailing the beautiful Norwegian Fjords

HURTIGRUTEN CRUISES

Destinations.

Hurtigruten's Norwegian Coastal Cruise along the scenic coast and fjords of Norway has often been praised as being one of the most beautiful voyages in the world. Each day of your voyage will yield unforgettable memories of natural beauty as you discover a coastline with an ever changing personality with a new revelation around every headland.

Spitsbergen

Remote, mysterious and extreme, the island of Spitsbergen is the crown of Arctic Norway. Located right on the southern fringe of the ever-frozen Arctic Ocean, this land is forged by ice, wind and sea. Here you will find both an untouched Arctic wilderness and a biological hot spot. Reigning this fragile food web is the top predator, the polar bear.

Greenland is a land of contrasts and truly a world of its own. Colossal icebergs in fantastic shapes and the inland ice - a sheet of ice that is kilometres thick. But the ice is not all. Greenland is also about green mountains, long fjords, precipitous cliffs, hot springs, beautiful flowers and fresh air. Animals like whales, seals, reindeer, musk oxen and polar bears also thrive here.

Hurtigruten - A Voyage Like No Other

Right to the heart of Norway and its people, is extraordinary voyage known as the Norwegian Coastal Express or Hurtigruten, meaning "Express Route" in the local tongue. This remarkable journey serves as a lifeline, transporting passengers, mail, and vital supplies to over 30 ports along the Norwegian coastline, many largely untouched by mainstream cruise liners.

Departing from Bergen, the Hurtigruten cruise embarks on a captivating odyssey, forging its way northward, traversing the Arctic Circle and beyond. With every twist and turn through the awe-inspiring wonders of the Norwegian coast, you will be immersed in a spectacle of nature's grandeur. Almost perpetually in sight of land, you will sail along one of the world's most breathtaking coastlines, navigating narrow inlets and uncovering the essence of this extraordinary expedition.

Enchanting hamlets pepper the route, nestled upon tiny islands, where the inhabitants rely on the arrival of Hurtigruten ships for their very survival. These vessels serve as a lifeline, delivering essential supplies and reuniting families and friends, perpetuating the symbiotic relationship between the communities and the sea.

Each Hurtigruten cruise ship possesses its own distinctive style and character, ensuring that no two journeys are ever alike. The ever-changing seasons, climate, flora, fauna, and encounters with local people, combined with the amiable English-speaking crew, transform each Hurtigruten voyage into a truly unique experience.

Fellow travelers from across the globe, sharing a mutual appreciation for extraordinary beauty, come together to revel in the splendorous landscapes and the relaxed ambiance on board. Many seize the opportunity to sail during the summer months, when the midnight sun casts its ethereal glow upon the horizon, bathing the breathtaking scenery in perpetual daylight.

As you step aboard your Hurtigruten ship, take pride in being part of a tradition that spans three centuries. It is this steadfast commitment to a rich heritage that has embedded Hurtigruten as an indispensable part of Norwegian life, ensuring its enduring significance for generations to come.

Hurtigruten Cruise

Hurtigruten has an old and illustrious history. Its meaning in Norwegian of "the express route" refers to the route's original use of facilitating the transport of goods between the two ends of the country. Nowadays, however, it is synonymous with a more leisurely, relaxed style of travel.

Often called "the world's most beautiful voyage", Hurtigruten voyages traverse Norway's western and northern coast between Bergen in the south and Kirkenes, deep in the arctic north. The approximately 780 miles (or 1,255 kilometres) of coastline between the two destinations are a dreamland of dramatic fjords, historic cities, incomparable seabird and marine life and, at certain times of the year, the mesmerising spectacle that is the Northern Lights.

Passengers joining one of our Hurtigruten Cruises have a choice of an extensive selection of comfortable cabins. Most outside cabins afford the opportunity to watch the panorama outside unfold through either a large picture window or a quaint porthole. Some of the suites also benefit from a private balcony. The views very much set the tone for the voyage itself, which aims to transport passengers away from their busy onshore lives in favour of immersion in the unique landscapes.

Life on board is relaxed and convivial. Food is traditional Norwegian-style and all ships are fully licensed. Expert lecturers accompany themed voyages but passengers on all voyages will find that there is a culture of sharing experiences of the trip with their fellow travellers.

Dress is informal although, of course, breathable, windproof and waterproof clothing is a must for voyages at any time of year. Winter departures necessitate thermal layers. UV sunglasses are useful throughout the year, even in winter due to the dazzling effect of even the thinnest streams of sunlight reflecting off ice and snow.

To add further interest to the voyage, all the ships are also working vessels. Their regular stops at the 34 ports along the route provide opportunities for the curious passenger to observe the loading and unloading of goods while also admiring the harbour areas.

The ports of call vary in size and purpose. Some belong to tiny island communities that rely on the Hurtigruten ships for supplies of food, mail, other essential goods and personal transport needs. Others are home to much larger communities whose wealth and status owes much to their background in the fishing, shipbuilding or mining industries. Bergen at the start of the voyage is perhaps the best-known location, with its Hanseatic mercantile history, its museums, shops and galleries, its fish market and the funicular railway offering spectacular trips to the summit of Mount Fløyen.

Beyond Bergen, every traveller is bound to find their own favourites. Perhaps it will be the pretty Art Nouveau town of Ålesund. Rebuilt after a devastating fire at the turn of the twentieth century, Ålesund is home to an impressive aquarium, which is actually built in to the coastline.

Fjord-lovers will adore the fairy tale landscapes of Geiranger. During the summer months, there is the additional opportunity to voyage into the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Geirangerfjord. Visitors can also opt to join onshore excursions to allow them to marvel at the fjords from an entirely different vantage point.

Synonymous for many with the Vikings, Trondheim is also Norway's ecclesiastical centre. In addition, it is home to one of Europe's most splendid Gothic cathedrals, Nidaros, and features a large number of picturesque and thoroughly photogenic wooden buildings, including the magnificent Stiftsgården palace.

The island chains of Lofoten and Vesterålen are a wildlife-lovers paradise. Sea eagles, guillemots, eider ducks, cormorants and puffins are only some of the bird species regularly spotted here. The area's rich marine life is also why so many fishermen make their livings here; their waterfront cabins (rorbuer) built on stilts are always much admired.

Few people can visit Norway without thinking of the herring trade. Harstad is the place to learn more, although this port town has also now embraced shipbuilding with equal gusto.

Hammerfest is the most northerly town in the world. Despite this, it remains mostly ice-free, thanks to the warming effects of the nearby Gulf Stream.

Kirkenes, where the coastal voyage turns south again for Bergen, lies only 10 kilometres from the Russian border. Largely insulated from the Gulf Stream, its deep harbour can become iced over in winter.

It may be difficult to decide which time of year to take a Hurtigruten Cruise. Spring is the ideal time to experience the contrast between the warmer south and the colder north, where ice has often not yet released its grip. The summer months are often the most popular, with many travellers keen to experience the “Land of the Midnight Sun”. Whatever time of year is chosen, passengers can be sure of a warm and hearty Norwegian welcome and an unforgettable encounter with some of the world's most awe-inspiring and beautiful landscapes.

Kongsberg Maritime on its way to make Hurtigruten more eco-friendly

hurtigruten the world's most beautiful sea voyage

Standing on the deck of a Hurtigruten-ship is like being in the middle of a Nordic national romantic painting. Fjords, mountains, the scent of the sea, and, most importantly, the precious silence that brings you closer to nature. Norwegian fjords captivate travelers from both domestic and foreign lands.

Hedda Felin, CEO of Hurtigruten , shares that an ambitious initiative is ensuring that the traditional sea route along the Norwegian coast becomes both more environmentally friendly and quieter than before.

"Now you can sail the classic route along the world's most beautiful coastline, with fewer emissions and with state-of-the-art maritime equipment on board. And most importantly, you can enjoy the view without a loud engine hum."

Hedda Felin

Aiming to be World Leaders in sustainable tourism

The desire and need to transition to greener operations were the starting point for Hurtigruten's "sustainability push".

"Our motivation is always to reduce the carbon emissions from our fleet. We are part of an industry that has traditionally polluted too much, and the green transition has been slow. That's why it's crucial that we now take responsibility for our emissions and act on the things we can change today," says Felin.

The vessel has been equipped with a more modern and cleaner hybrid system. This new system can operate both electrically and on fuel and uses 20-25% less fuel than before. This optimizes operations and increases energy efficiency.

Good recycling of "old" ships

Kongsberg Maritime , in collaboration with Myklebust Verft , are behind the upgrades. There are several benefits to upgrading existing vessels, says Geir Oscar Løseth from Kongsberg Maritime.

"Upgrading a vessel this way is a much faster method of meeting environmental requirements than if a new one had to be built. The upgrade takes only four to five months and simultaneously extends the vessel's lifespan. This results in significant environmental savings."

Dress shirt, Hair, Sleeve, Gesture, Collar

"Keeping our fleet operational as long as possible is both economical and eco-friendly. It's more sustainable to upgrade a ship than to build a new one. It's good for the environment, for us, and for the guests who sail with us. It's crucial that future transport and tourism are sustainable."

Hedda Fellin

"We've worked closely with Kongsberg Maritime throughout the entire process. They have the expertise in design technology and product solutions development, while we specialize in retrofit implementation. This combination has proven to be very successful," he says.

Geir Oscar Løseth from Kongsberg Maritime fully agrees.

"Upgrading a vessel built in 1993 to today's technology is a significant task. We depended on integrating all systems and, importantly, everyone involved in the project working as a team. The result was that we strengthened each other."

"Hurtigruten is proud to be part of a strong Norwegian consortium with Kongsberg Maritime and Myklebust Verft and contribute to propelling the maritime industry forward," concludes Hedda Felin.

This project is one of the largest environmental retrofit projects in Europe. It was essential to have strong professional expertise to rely on, says Hedda Felin.

"There aren't many players who can undertake such a complex project. We have had a long and fruitful collaboration with Kongsberg Maritime and knew they could deliver on this."

Myklebust Verft handled the actual retrofitting of the vessels. CEO Lars Conradi Andersen is pleased with the collaboration.

In the evening, we will board our legendary Hurtigruten ship, the anchors will be lifted – and our adventure will begin!

Day 2: Ålesund – Geirangerfjord – Hjørundfjord

Hurtigruten ship

Passing the West Cape, the westernmost point in Norway, we will reach the enchanting art nouveau city of Ålesund – with its towers, peaks, gables and ornamentation, it is a spectacle for the eyes! In the period from 1 June to 31 August, we will set course for the breathtaking Geirangerfjord (UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site). In the autumn months, your ship will sail into the 22 miles long fascinating Hjørundfjord. Along the banks, the peaks of the Sunnmøre Alps rise up into the sky – it is a magnificent natural backdrop!

hurtigruten the world's most beautiful sea voyage

Our day begins in beautiful Trondheim. During an optional city tour, we will experience the old royal city with its colourful wooden buildings, the Ringve mansion and the Nidaros Cathedral. This was built between 1017 and 1300 and is the largest Gothic building in Norway. Then we will travel through Stoksund, a narrow strait, to reach the tranquil coastal town of Rørvik.

Day 4: Arctic Circle – Lofoten

hurtigruten the world's most beautiful sea voyage

We cross the Arctic Circle. In the summer, the sun does not set here. In autumn, the northern lights shine here. If this is your first time through Arctic waters, the Arctic Circle baptism awaits you – a wet and happy affair! On the way to Bodø, we cross a beautiful labyrinth of archipelagos, these small ice age rock islands. Then the massive Lofoten Wall – a 68 miles long mountain range – rises steeply from the Vestfjord. The island world of Lofoten with its stockfish racks and the ‚Rorbuer‘, the traditional fishing huts, will enchant you.

Day 5: Tromsø – the gateway to the Arctic

hurtigruten the world's most beautiful sea voyage

We sail through Risøyrenna, a narrow passage between large sandbanks, to Tromsø, the capital of the Arctic. As the former starting point for major polar expeditions, it is considered the ‚gateway to the Arctic Ocean‘. The most famous landmark is the Arctic Cathedral with its unique architecture and the glass mosaics – one of the most northern cathedrals in the world! Those who choose to hike on one of the nearby mountains will be rewarded with a wonderful panoramic view.

Day 6: Honningsvåg – North Cape

hurtigruten the world's most beautiful sea voyage

Today we reach Honningsvåg, the gateway to the wonderful North Cape plateau. On an optional excursion, you can explore this 1,007 ft tall slate rock rising out of the Arctic Ocean. Here, at the northern tip of Europe, you can enjoy an incredible view, feel the indescribable feeling of standing at the end of the world, only 1,243 miles from the North Pole. Then we will continue to the charming fishing village of Kjøllefjord on the west coast of the Nordkinn peninsula.

Day 7: Kirkenes – the turning point

hurtigruten the world's most beautiful sea voyage

Kirkenes is known as the ‚Gateway to the East‘ and is the last Norwegian town before the border and at the same time the turning point of our journey. In the evening we will reach the remote village of Berlevåg. The mighty Arctic Ocean stretches north from here.

Day 8: Hammerfest – Tromsø

hurtigruten the world's most beautiful sea voyage

You will discover Hammerfest today, the northernmost city in the world. It was founded in 1789 for trade with Russia. It is still an important fishing village. In spring, we sail through the rugged scenery of the Lyngenfjord. We then continue southwards until we dock again in Tromsø. There you can explore the typical Norwegian city centre on your own during a walk or enjoy a regional beer in a cosy atmosphere in one of the pubs.

Day 9: Vesterålen – Lofoten

hurtigruten the world's most beautiful sea voyage

Today our ship sets its course for the fantastic island world of Vesterålen and Lofoten. The trip once again leads through the Risøy channel (Risøyrenna). Travelling through the about 19 miles long Raftsundet – and depending on the weather and schedule through the extremely narrow Trollfjord – we reach Svolvær. From here we will continue to Stamsund where we will once again be able to marvel at the peaks of the Lofoten wall.

Day 10: Arctic Circle – Seven Sisters

hurtigruten the world's most beautiful sea voyage

We cross the Arctic Circle once again. We celebrate saying farewell to the Arctic on board in the style of Arctic traditions. Another highlight of the day is passing the ‚Seven Sisters‘ mountain formation, the origins of which are the subject of numerous legends and myths. The seven mountains are between 2,953 ft and 3,609 ft high.

Day 11: Homeward journey

General note:

Below is an information overview. The conditions of entry, as well as the political and health situation, can change anywhere in the world at any time. We therefore recommend checking before your trip. Please check the website of the Foreign Office ( www.gov.uk ) before your departure.

Location and geography:

The western coast of Norway lies on the European North Sea, the north coast on the Arctic Sea and the south coast on the Skagerrak, part of the North Sea separating Norway from Denmark. To the east, the country has its border with Sweden, to the north Finland and at its furthest north-easterly point the Russian Federation. The 1,678-miles-long fjord coastline is Norway‘s ‚trademark‘. The fjords are often very deep, on average between 50 miles and 62 miles long, and surrounded by tall mountains. Further inland, there are vast forests in the south with numerous rivers and lakes, while in the north, within the Arctic Circle, the landscape is a harsh, mountainous one.

Form of government:

Constitutional monarchy

Norwegian Church (Lutheran-Lutheran): 73%; Roman Catholic Church: 2%; Islam: 2.6%; Buddhism: 0.3%; Hinduism: 0.1%; Other/without religion: 17.7%

The country‘s official language is Norwegian. In the north of Norway, Sami (also an officially recognised language) is also spoken. Many Norwegians speak English, and some also speak German and French. Note: The languages used on board are Norwegian and English.

The Gulf Stream and air flows from the North Atlantic ensure a moderate climate at the coast. Generally speaking, the southern flatlands have warmer summers and colder winters than the coastal regions. Rain falls all year round, and in winter there are heavy snowfalls. Close to the Arctic Circle, there is constant daylight around the midsummer period and constant twilight during the winter months.

Electricity:

The mains voltage is 220 V, 50 Hz. You will need an adapter and voltage converter.

Local time:

Between Norway (UTC+2 hour) and UK (UTC+1 hour) there is the whole year a time difference of 1 hour.

Making telephone calls:

For telephone calls to the UK, please dial the country code 0044 first. For telephone calls to Norway, please dial the country code 0047 first. Omit the first zero in the area code.

Entry requirements for British citizens:

British nationals can travel to Norway for up to 90 days without a visa. Visits to Schengen countries within the previous 180 days before you travel count towards your 90 days. Your passport should be valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave Norway and less than 10 years old on the day you enter. If you renewed your passport early, extra months may have been added to its expiry date. This could affect the requirement for your passport to be less than 10 years old. Nationals of other countries are advised to inquire at the Norwegian Embassy about the entry requirements applicable to them. Whilst we endeavour to provide guidance where necessary, we cannot be responsible for any problems encountered (whether at any point of entry or elsewhere) in the event that passport and visa requirements are not satisfied. The EU has a new visa waiver system, called ETIAS, which will be valid for three years. British passport holders travelling to the EU will need to apply and pay for an ETIAS, via an online system ( https://etias.com/ ). Note: A valid identity card or passport must also be presented when checking in at the Hurtigruten terminal or on board. Temporary identity documents are not accepted here. Entry requirements for British nationals may change at short notice. Legally binding information and/or information on entry requirements that goes beyond these instructions can only be obtained directly from the embassy or one of the consulates general of your destination country. Citizens of other countries are advised to enquire about the entry requirements applicable to them at the respective embassy. You are responsible for applying for and presenting any necessary visas. RSD accepts no liability if you fail to do so. Please note that entry is subject to authorisation by the immigration authorities.

Additional packages:

Although your trip already includes a comprehensive package, you also have the option of choosing addedextras. We recommend booking the following package: Full board: 9× lunch with regional products: only £260 per person.

The currency is called Norwegian Krone (NOK). 1 crown = 100 Øre. Course (as of January 2024): 1 GBP = 13,18 NOK, 1 NOK = 0.08 GBP. Banknotes are available in the values of 1,000, 500, 200, 100 and 50 NOK, coins in denominations 20, 10, 5 and 1 NOK and 50 Øre.

Banks/Credit cards:

Money can go to the banks, exchange offices, and main post offices are exchanged during opening hours. Bank opening hours: Mon – Wed and Fri 08.15/09.00 – 15.30 (summer until 15.00), Th 08.15/09.00 – 17.00. Withdrawals: With EC/Maestro Card and PIN number, cash can be withdrawn throughout Europe in the local currency. Note: No money can be withdrawn on board ship. Payments can be made in cash (the on-board currency is Norwegian Krona). Cashless payment via CruiseCard is the better option, however. To do this, the credit card (must be valid for at least a further 3 months) must be presented at reception and the CruiseCard balance is then automatically deducted from the credit card, or a cash sum can be left at reception and the CruiseCard is then loaded with this amount. On the final evening of the cruise, the CruiseCard is totalled. The final bill will be sent to your cabin and the CruiseCard cannot be used the following day.

Particular customs regulations:

Norwegian customs regulations are very strict. The import of alcohol, but also tobacco, is subject to strict conditions. Even small violations of the limits are severely punishable. High import duties are payable when importing cars. If you are bringing currency with a value corresponding to more than NOK 25,000 to or from Norway, you have to notify Norwegian Customs. If you have fished under the auspices of a registered tourist fishing camp, the export quota is maximum 18 kilos of fish or fish products, provided that the organized fishing can be documented. Further customs information regarding the import of goods can be obtained from the embassy of your destination country. This is the only place from which to obtain legally correct and binding information. Important: If you are travelling to Great Britain from outside the UK, your personal allowances mean you can bring in a certain amount of goods without paying tax or duty. If you go over your allowances you must declare all your goods and pay tax and duty on all the goods in that category. Please inform yourself about the current customs regulations: www.gov.uk/bringing-goods-into-uk-personal-use/arriving-in-Great-Britain .

Conduct on board:

Smoking: Smoking is permitted only in designated areas on deck when the ship is at sea. Throwing cigarettes overboard into the sea is strictly forbidden. Smoking is strictly prohibited inside all cabins. Failure to observe this regulation will incur a fine. Alcohol: A maximum of two bottles of alcohol (max. 1.5 l) may be brought on board per person. Anything above this amount will be confiscated and returned to you on the final day. Alcohol purchased on land must be reported to reception before departure. The consumption of alcohol that you have brought on board yourself is generally not permitted. Clothing: Formal clothing or evening wear is not required, however a jacket or blazer is a good idea. The weather in Norway changes quickly, which is why the ‚onion‘ approach is advisable. Breathable but wind- and water-proof clothing should also be brought along, together with a hat, gloves, scarf and functional clothing.

Special criminal provisions:

Drug-related offences and infringements of customs and fishing regulations are prosecuted harshly. The carrying of even the smallest quantities of narcotics will generally lead to arrest at the border, the imposing of an entry ban or imprisonment. Keen fishers should inquire about local conditions in every instance. Failure to observe the relevant regulations incurs very high financial penalties which must be paid immediately. Fishing near to fish breeding farms is strictly prohibited.

Medical information:

At least 8 weeks before your trip, check the latest country-specific health advice from the National Travel Health Network and Centre (NaTHNaC – https://travelhealthpro.org.uk/countries ) on the Travel HealthPro website. Each country-specific page has information on vaccine recommendations, any current health risks or outbreaks, and factsheets with information on staying healthy abroad. Medical care: Anyone requiring regular medical care should find out about the facilities available in the sparsely populated parts of Norway. There may be problems accessing certain services in different regions. Outside normal business hours from 8 a.m. to 3 / 4 p.m., local emergency centres (Legevakt) can be contacted. The central emergency numbers in Norway are 112 (Police) or 113 (ambulance). For the dental emergency service (Tannlegevakt), payment must generally be made locally in cash. Note: Due to the short distances between individual ports, there is neither a doctor nor a pharmacist on board. Medical care is available in port and in an emergency a helicopter can be summoned. All ships have a sick bay and personnel specially trained in first aid. You should get a free UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) or European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) before leaving the UK. If you already have an EHIC it will still be valid as long as it remains in date. You can also contact your health insurance company for information on current regulations. The Foreign Office recommends taking out foreign medical insurance with repatriation cover. In this context, we would point out that the costs of any assistance that may be required will be charged if you do not have additional cover. No guarantee can be provided regarding the correctness or completeness of the medical information, nor can any liability be assumed for any damages that may arise. You alone are responsible for your health. Customers must ensure that they are physically and mentally well enough to undertake their chosen trip. They should find out for themselves the physical mobility levels and mental capacity required for the trip in question.

Depart from Hamburg

Our voyage begins in Hamburg, Germany’s second-largest city. With its links to trade and adventure that go back centuries, it's the perfect starting point.

Hamburg is home to two UNESCO World Heritage sites: the world's largest warehouse complex and the nearby Wadden Sea. If you have time, explore them before you board.

Then, get settled on your comfortable ship,

MS Otto Sverdrup

, enjoy the first of many delicious, locally sourced meals, and get to know your Coastal Experience Team.

Crossing the North Sea

Today, we cross the North Sea so you can enjoy the day aboard MS Otto Sverdrup. Admire the views from the expansive Observation Deck, or take advantage of the hot tubs.

Photography enthusiasts can pick up some pointers from our onboard photographer. You'll find the Explorer Lounge & Bar a comfy place to read or watch the world glide by.

You can also enjoy one of the daily themed talks by the Coastal Experience Team, such as Vikings or Norway’s oil and gas history. Listen as they share their stories and knowledge of the places you’ll be visiting.

A person looking out from Preikestolen viewpoint in Lysefjord, Stavanger

Sail into the famous Lysefjord

Stavanger has an international ambience and a lively cultural scene. Discover the architectural relics of Old Stavanger, including a magnificent 12th-century cathedral. You can also visit the Norwegian Petroleum Museum, pop into a local boutique shop, or simply enjoy a beer on the waterfront.

Leaving Stavanger, we enter the Lysefjord to experience some of the most striking vertical cliffs of all the Norwegian fjords. As we sail through the fjord, you can enjoy impressive views from the ship, especially of the 1,980 ft high Preikestolen viewpoint, famously known as ‘Pulpit Rock’.

The colourful wooden wharfs of Bryggen, Bergen's UNESCO-listed neighbourhood

Beautiful Bergen

Surrounded by seven mountains and the sea, Norway’s former capital Bergen is one of the nation’s most picturesque and historic cities.

Stroll through the UNESCO-listed Bryggen district and discover its colourful wooden wharfs dating back to the 14th century. Explore the cobbled streets and alleys on foot, stopping at fascinating museums, artisanal boutiques, cafés, or a pub for a glass of local Hansa beer.

Bergen’s famous fish market is worth a visit, too. It promises to be a feast for the senses with the sights, sounds, and smells of bountiful, fresh seafood which can be cooked there and then.

You can explore the city on a sightseeing tour, visit Bryggen, and ride the funicular up to Mount Fløyen on an optional excursion.

A sea eagle swoops above Glomfjord in Norway

Cruise the Inner Coastal Route

After Bergen, we head north along the Norwegian coast. You’ll be in awe as we sail through this region of windswept islands, sheltered bays, and some of the most beautiful fjords in the world. It’s also inhabited by a wide range of wildlife, such as magnificent Sea Eagles.

When we started sailing north of the Trøndelag region in 1893, much was still unknown about the coastline but, over the years, we’ve become experts in these waters. Today, we are among the few with the maritime knowledge and skill to take you through the many skerries, islets, and hidden fjords that characterise this stretch of coast.

A sauna in the fishing village of Træna, Norway

Norway’s oldest fishing community

Træna is an archipelago of around 500 islands that sits at the edge of the Arctic Circle. Only four are inhabited year-round. Though small, this archipelago has a long history, and is one of Norway’s oldest fishing communities.

Today’s selection of activities and excursions take you to the heart of the archipelago’s sights and traditions. You could go island hopping, join a hike or cultural walk, or immerse yourself with a sauna and refreshing dip in the Arctic Ocean.

We cross the Arctic Circle as we continue heading north, commemorating the moment with a traditional Norwegian ceremony on board.

A couple walk along a beautiful white-sand beach on the island of Senja in Norway

Senja: ‘Miniature Norway’

Today we dock at Torsken to visit Senja, one of CNN’s Top 10 list of 'World’s Most Beautiful Islands'.

Nicknamed 'Miniature Norway' due to the diversity of its landscapes, Senja's northern coastline has sandy beaches, turquoise waters, and lofty mountains. Southern Senja and Ånderdalen National Park offer rocky coastline and pine forests. To the east, you'll find rolling hills and birch forests.

There’s so much to see here – and so many ways to explore with an optional excursion. Join a hike, pedal an e-bike, ride a RIB, or sit back to enjoy a scenic bus tour.

Sunrise at the North Cape in Norway

The Top of Europe

We dock alongside Honningsvåg, gateway to the North Cape. The town has several boutique shops, Arctic dining experiences, and galleries. It’s also your starting point if you choose to visit the North Cape.

Standing at the edge of the North Cape – the northernmost point of Europe – there’s only the Svalbard archipelago between you and the Geographic North Pole, 1,300 miles away. Make sure you visit the North Cape Hall’s exhibits on the area's history.

Join an optional excursion and watch the tip of the continent edge closer on a guided bus tour to the North Cape. Or you can combine a tour there with a tasty introduction to the King of the Barents Sea – king crab. More active options include hiking, or riding a quad bike.

This is the northernmost point of our cruise. From here, we begin our trip southbound.

tromso-2011-tiff-125-of-193-143050

Tromsø – Gateway to the Arctic

Set in a majestic landscape, this small, cosmopolitan city with a big past has plenty of fascinating sights to discover.

Browse the many shops along the main street and partake in a meal at one of the chic restaurants. Why not also drop into Ølhallen, the city’s oldest pub, to enjoy a range of locally brewed beers.

If the weather is in your favour, you can also take the Fjellheisen cable car to the top of Storsteinen for incredible views of the city and the surrounding Arctic fjord landscape.

Today’s optional excursions highlight Tromsø’s nature, culture and history, with hikes and bus tours. They’re a great way to get to know this fascinating city of the Arctic.

Sunset over Reine in the Lofoten Islands, Norway

Discover Lofoten

Today we explore the famed Lofoten islands. With steep mountains, beautiful beaches and bays, and pretty fishing villages, the archipelago is unlike anything you’ve seen.

With its iconic red fishing huts, known as rorbuer, dotted against a backdrop of towering, jagged granite peaks, Reine is an idyllic place to visit. You’ll quickly see why this is one of Norway's most-photographed sites!

There are lots of ways to explore Lofoten on today’s excursions. Take to the water in a kayak, hike through the beautiful scenery, or cover even more ground on a scenic bus tour.

Norway Bessaker HGR 166686 1920 Photo Tommy Simonsen

We head south from the Lofoten Islands along the enchanting ’inside passage’ of the Norwegian coast. As well as the views of the area’s fjords, windswept islets and skerries, it’s another opportunity to admire the navigation skills of your Captain.

As you gaze out from the deck of MS Otto Sverdrup at one of the most beautiful coastal areas in the world, look out for birds swooping and soaring across land and sea. This is a wonderful area for birdwatching. Or you could simply soak in the hot tub.

After lunch, we’ll spend the afternoon at Bessaker, a small village in Trøndelag county. Home to just 200 residents, it’s known for its excellent fishing opportunities and the surrounding waters boast plenty of skrei, coalfish and pollock. The annual fishing festival, held on the third weekend of July since 1979, attracts thousands of visitors.

You can explore Bessaker and its impressive natural surroundings at your own pace, or opt to join an optional hike, local food tasting, or guided e-bike tour.

A wooden hut on the shores of Hjørundfjord, Norway

Scenic Hjørundfjord

Surrounded by the Sunnmøre Alps, the Hjørundfjord is one of the most scenic fjords in Norway and largely undiscovered by other cruise lines. We anchor close to the village of Sæbø and go ashore to experience Norwegian nature and culture up close.

It's a beautiful spot to enjoy at your own pace. Or you can see more on an optional cultural and scenic sightseeing excursion. You could join a guided walk among the villages to discover the area’s history and nature, and see incredible views on a mountain hike.

The Viking memorial in Haugesund

Homeland of the Viking kings

The region of Haugaland is known for its Viking connections, so you can expect a Viking theme for today’s talks and optional excursions. It was from here that the Viking king Harald Fairhair united Norway into a single kingdom, and the country’s Viking past lives on in several historic sites.

We'll visit a recreated Viking settlement on the small island of Bukkøya. On the nearby island of Karmøy, the Nordvegen History Centre in Avaldsnes delves into the characters of sagas and ancient poems.

If you feel inspired, you can adopt the Viking sense of adventure and choose to explore by RIB or e-bike on one of today’s optional excursions.

MS Otto Sverdrup sailing along the Norwegian coast at sunset

Reflections of Norway

It's our last day at sea and your voyage is drawing to a close. Now that you’re more acquainted with Viking history, it’s easy to picture their longships forging this same journey across the North Sea.

Make the most of your last full day on MS Otto Sverdrup. Scan the waves for seabirds and perhaps even dolphins, which occasionally like to follow us. Soak in the hot tub, work out in the gym, make use of the Wellness Center, or relax in the Explorer Lounge.

Don’t miss the Coastal Experience Team as they wrap up the journey with a review of the highlights of our memorable voyage.

Your voyage ends back in Hamburg. If you didn’t get a chance to explore this beautiful city 15 days ago, make sure you do now.

Many of the city's attractions are clustered in the Altstadt district, including the St Nikolai Memorial and historic Deichstraße street. Hamburg’s beautiful canals have earned it the nickname ‘Venice of the North’, and a canal tour is a great way to explore the city.
