Participating lounges reserve the right to remove any person from the premises for inappropriate behavior or failure to adhere to rules, including, but not limited to, conduct that is disruptive, abusive, or violent. To be eligible for this benefit, Card Account must not be cancelled. Please refer to each program’s terms and conditions to learn more.

The Centurion® Lounge

U.S. Platinum Card Members have unlimited complimentary access to all locations of The Centurion Lounge. Companion Platinum Cards on Consumer Platinum Accounts and Additional Gold and Additional Business Expense Cards on Business Platinum Accounts are not eligible for access to The Centurion Lounge. All access to The Centurion Lounge is subject to space availability. To access The Centurion Lounge, Platinum Card Members must arrive within 3 hours of their departing flight and present The Centurion Lounge agent with the following upon each visit: their valid Card, a boarding pass showing a confirmed reservation for a departing flight on the same day on any carrier and a government-issued I.D. Name on boarding pass must match name on the Card. Note that select lounges allow access to Card Members with a confirmed reservation for any same-day travel (departure or arrival). Refer to the specific location’s access policy for more information. Failure to present this documentation may result in access being denied. Card Members must be at least 18 years of age to enter without a parent or legal guardian. All Centurion Lounge visitors must be of legal drinking age in the jurisdiction where the Lounge is located to consume alcoholic beverages. Please drink responsibly. American Express reserves the right to remove any person from the Lounge for inappropriate behavior or failure to adhere to rules, including, but not limited to, conduct that is disruptive, abusive or violent. Soliciting other Card Members for access into our Lounge is not permissible. Hours may vary by location and are subject to change. Amenities vary among The Centurion Lounge locations and are subject to change. Card Members will not be compensated for changes in locations, rates or policies. In addition to the complimentary services and amenities in the Lounge, certain services, products or amenities may be offered for sale. You are responsible for any purchases and/or servicing charges you make in The Centurion Lounge or authorize our Member Services Professionals to make on your behalf. Services available at the Member Services Desk are based on the type of American Express Card used to enter the Lounge. American Express will not be liable for any articles lost or stolen or damages suffered by visitors to The Centurion Lounge. If we in our sole discretion determine that you have engaged in abuse, misuse, or gaming in connection with Lounge access in any way or that you intend to do so, we may remove access to The Centurion Lounge from the Platinum Account. Use of The Centurion Lounge is subject to all rules and conditions set by American Express. American Express reserves the right to revise the rules at any time without notice. U.S. Platinum Card Members, U.S. Business Platinum Card Members and Additional U.S. Platinum Card Members on the Account will be charged a $50 fee for each guest (or $30 for children aged 2 through 17, with proof of age) unless they have qualified for Complimentary Guest Access. U.S. Platinum Card and U.S. Business Platinum Card Members may qualify for Complimentary Guest Access for up to two (2) guests per visit to locations of The Centurion Lounge in the U.S., Hong Kong International Airport and London Heathrow Airport (“Complimentary Guest Access”), after spending $75,000 or more on eligible purchases on the Platinum Account in a calendar year. Once effective, Complimentary Guest Access will be available for the remainder of the calendar year in which it became effective, the following calendar year, and until January 31 of the next calendar year (for example, if Complimentary Guest Access became effective on May 1, 2023, it would remain effective until January 31, 2025). Eligible purchases made by any Additional Card Members on the Platinum Account will contribute to the purchase requirement. Complimentary Guest Access is limited to two (2) guests per Card Member per visit, regardless of whether you are eligible for complimentary guest access through multiple Platinum Accounts or through other Amex Cards. Guest access policies may vary internationally by location and are subject to change. Eligibility for Complimentary Guest Access will typically be processed within a week of the Platinum Account’s meeting the purchase requirement, but may take up to 12 weeks to become effective. Complimentary Guest Access status will be reflected in the Benefits tab of your online Account and in the American Express App. Eligible purchases to meet the purchase requirement are for goods and services minus returns and other credits. Eligible purchases do NOT include fees or interest charges, cash advances, purchases of travelers checks, purchases or reloading of prepaid cards, purchases of gift cards, person-to-person payments, or other cash equivalents. If a Card Member upgrades or downgrades from a different American Express Card to a Platinum Account, eligible purchases made on that Card Account will count toward meeting the purchase requirement to achieve Complimentary Guest Access on the new Platinum Account.

Delta Sky Club

This benefit is available to U.S. Platinum Card Members and Additional Platinum Card Members on the Account (each, an “Eligible Platinum Card Member”). Companion Platinum Cards on Consumer Platinum Accounts and Additional Gold and Additional Business Expense Cards on Business Platinum Accounts are not eligible for the Delta Sky Club benefit. Platinum Card Members must present their valid American Express Card, government-issued I.D., and boarding pass to the Delta Sky Club ambassador. Boarding pass must show a reservation for a same-day Delta-operated flight (Delta or Delta connection) departing from or arriving at the airport in which the Delta Sky Club is located. Name on boarding pass must match name on the Card. Eligible Platinum Card Members on departing flights can only access the Delta Sky Club or the Delta Sky Club “Grab and Go” feature within 3 hours of their flight's scheduled departure time. During a layover between Delta-operated flights on the same ticket, you may use the Delta Sky Club in your connecting airport at any time during the layover. Delta reserves the right to limit access for non-revenue flyers at any Delta Sky Club. Individuals must be at least 18 years of age to access Delta Sky Club, and 21 years of age to access locations with a self-service bar, unless accompanied by a responsible, supervising adult who has access to the Delta Sky Club. Benefit valid only at Delta Sky Club. Partner lounges are not included. Note that amenities may vary among Delta Sky Club locations. Participating airport clubs and locations subject to change without notice. Eligible Platinum Card Members may bring guests into the Delta Sky Club subject to the most current Delta Sky Club access and pricing policies and must use their valid Platinum Card as the payment method for guest access. Guests also must be flying on a same-day Delta-operated flight. Guest access and fees subject to terms and conditions of participating airport clubs. Access is subject to Delta Sky Club rules. To review the rules, please visit delta.com/skyclub . Benefit and rules subject to change without notice. Additional restrictions may apply. Effective January 1, 2024: Eligible Platinum Card Members traveling on a same-day Delta-operated flight with Basic Economy (E) fare tickets will not have access to the Delta Sky Club or to Grab and Go. Effective September 14, 2023 through January 31, 2025: Eligible Platinum Card Members receive complimentary access to the Delta Sky Club or to Grab and Go when traveling on a same-day Delta-operated flight. Eligible Platinum Card Members may bring either up to two guests, or their immediate family (spouse/domestic partner and children under 21) to the Club at a per-visit rate of $50 per person, per location or to Grab and Go at a per-visit rate of $25 per person, per location. The Eligible Platinum Card must be used as the payment method to purchase guest access. Guests must also be flying on a same-day Delta-operated flight. Children under 2 years of age may accompany the Eligible Platinum Card Member for free. Effective February 1, 2025: Eligible Platinum Card Members will receive 10 Visits per Eligible Platinum Card per year to the Delta Sky Club or to Grab and Go when traveling on a same-day Delta-operated flight. Visits are non-transferable and may only be used by the Eligible Platinum Card Member. Visits issued from February 1, 2025 through January 31, 2026 will expire on January 31, 2026, and Visits issued in subsequent years will expire on January 31 of each calendar year thereafter. A “Visit” is an entry to one or more Delta Sky Clubs or usage of the Delta Sky Club “Grab and Go” feature, at one or more airports, for a period of up to 24 hours starting upon the first Delta Sky Club entry or Grab and Go usage, during an Eligible Platinum Card Member’s travel on a same-day Delta-operated flight. A single Visit permits usage of Delta Sky Club(s) in multiple airports during the 24-hour period. For example, if you visit a Delta Sky Club in different airports on a trip, entry into one or more of these Clubs will be considered part of the same Visit as long as these additional entries occur within 24 hours of the first Delta Sky Club entry. If travel exceeds 24 hours from the first Delta Sky Club, then a second Visit will be deducted if entering the Delta Sky Club or using Grab and Go more than 24 hours after the first entry. Eligible Platinum Card Members may not access the Club or a Grab and Go location in the three hours from the time of previous Grab and Go usage at the same airport. Once all 10 Visits have been used, Eligible Card Members may purchase additional Delta Sky Club Visits (including Grab and Go) at a per-Visit rate of $50 per person. Visits cannot be used for guest entry. During a Visit, Eligible Platinum Card Members may bring either up to two (2) guests, or their immediate family (spouse/domestic partner and children under 21) to the Club (including Grab and Go) at a per-Visit rate of $50 per person. The Eligible Platinum Card must be used as the payment method to purchase Card Member and guest access. Guests must also be flying on a same-day Delta-operated flight and be accompanied by the Eligible Platinum Card Member. Children under 2 years of age may accompany the Eligible Platinum Card Member for free. To earn an unlimited number of Visits (“Unlimited Delta Sky Club Access”) starting on February 1, 2025, the total eligible purchases on the Eligible Platinum Card Account must equal or exceed $75,000 (the “Purchase Requirement”) between January 1, 2024 and December 31, 2024 and in each calendar year thereafter. Unlimited Delta Sky Club Access will be provided to all Eligible Platinum Card Members once the Account has reached the Purchase Requirement. Companion Platinum Cards on Consumer Platinum Accounts and Additional Gold and Additional Business Expense Cards on Business Platinum Accounts are not eligible for the Unlimited Delta Sky Club Access benefit. All entry requirements set forth above will continue to apply with respect to Unlimited Delta Sky Club Access. Unlimited Delta Sky Club Access will be processed within a week of the Eligible Platinum Card Account’s satisfying the Purchase Requirement in most instances but may take up to 12 weeks to become effective. Once effective, Unlimited Delta Sky Club Access will be available for the remainder of the calendar year in which it became effective, the following calendar year and through January 31 of the next calendar year (for example, if Unlimited Delta Sky Club Access becomes effective on May 1, 2025, it will remain effective through January 31, 2027). Eligible purchases made by any Additional Card Members on the Eligible Platinum Card Account will contribute to the Purchase Requirement. Eligible purchases to meet the Purchase Requirement are for goods and services minus returns and other credits. Eligible purchases do NOT include fees, interest charges, cash advances, purchases of travelers’ checks, purchases or reloading of prepaid cards, purchases of gift cards, person-to-person payments, or other cash equivalents. If a Card Member upgrades or downgrades from a different American Express Card to an Eligible Platinum Card, eligible purchases made on the prior Card Account will count toward the Purchase Requirement. Delta reserves the right to revoke Unlimited Delta Sky Club Access if you return, reverse or charge back eligible purchases in a way that reduces your eligible spend below the Purchase Requirement for the calendar year. If Delta and/or American Express determine that you have engaged in abuse, misuse, or gaming in connection with this Delta Sky Club Access Benefit in any way or that you intend to do so, Visits may be deducted from your account and/or Unlimited Delta Sky Club Access revoked.

The cheapest ways to book a trip to Spain with points and miles

Andrew Kunesh

Update : Some offers mentioned below are no longer available. View the current offers here .

Europe is set to open to American tourists this summer , and Spain is at the top of my list.

I visited Barcelona in 2017 and enjoyed eating tapas, hanging out on the Mediterranean and whisking my way through a seemingly endless number of museums and cultural sights. If the country reopens alongside the rest of the EU, I plan to revisit Barcelona and stop in Madrid as a part of a larger European trip.

If you're also considering a trip to Spain, you'll be happy to know that it's easy to use your points and miles to fund the trip. Several airlines operate nonstop service between the U.S. and Spain, and most hotel groups have flagship properties in Barcelona and Madrid. This makes Spainsuper accessible to award travelers.

Here, I'll show you the cheapest ways to get to and stay in Spain with your points and miles. I'll start by looking at flight options and booking hotels, activities and ground transportation with points. In the end, you'll have everything you need to book a trip to Spain without breaking the bank.

Airlines that fly to Spain

american express travel barcelona

Spain has become one of the best-connected countries with the U.S. over the years. You can fly from most major U.S. airports to Barcelona (BCN) and Madrid (MAD) on U.S. and Spanish airlines alike. Some of these flights are operated year-round, while others operate on a seasonal basis. You can also connect to cities in Spain with a connecting flight on other European carriers like Air France, British Airways and Lufthansa.

Here's a look at non-stop routes from the U.S. to Spain.

Barcelona (BCN):

  • Atlanta (ATL) - Delta
  • Boston (BOS) - Iberia
  • Miami (MIA) - American Airlines
  • Newark (EWR) - United Airlines
  • New York-JFK - Iberia, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines
  • Philadelphia (PHL) - American Airlines
  • San Francisco (SFO) - Iberia

Madrid (MAD):

  • Charlotte (CLT) - American Airlines
  • Chicago-O'Hare (ORD) - Iberia
  • Dallas-Ft. Worth (DFW) - American Airlines
  • Los Angeles (LAX) - Iberia
  • Miami (MIA) - Air Europa, American Airlines, Iberia
  • New York-JFK - Air Europa, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Iberia

If you're traveling to Spain as a part of a larger European itinerary, you can fly most major European low-cost carriers to Spain. This includes airlines like Vueling, Ryanair , Wizz Air and others. These tickets can be incredibly cheap too. For example, Prague (PRG) to Barcelona (BCN) costs just $31 one-way on Vueling this August.

Cheapest award flights to Spain

With so many flight options, it's easy to use points and miles to book flights to Spain. Here's a look at the cheapest redemption options across the major airline alliances. I'll primarily focus on nonstop flights but mention connecting options too.

Cheapest Oneworld awards to Spain

american express travel barcelona

The cheapest way to fly from the U.S. to Spain on Oneworld airlines is booking off-peak Iberia award tickets with Iberia Avios . These dates cover most of the year and let you fly from the U.S. East Coast to Spain for as few as 17,000 Avios in economy and 36,000 in business class . Tickets from the West Coast and Florida and flights booked during peak times cost more but can still be booked relatively cheaply.

american express travel barcelona

Off-peak pricing shows on the Iberia booking engine and you can view all dates online . You're liable for paying moderate taxes and fees on Iberia tickets, but these are usually under $150 one-way.

Here's a look at pricing:

If you'd rather fly American Airlines, you'll want to book with American AAdvantage miles. You can book economy for 30,000 miles one-way (or 22,500 off-peak) and 57,500 in business class. While more expensive than an Iberia ticket, it can be a good way to spend your American miles — especially in business class.

american express travel barcelona

I think Iberia is the best option for flying from the U.S. to Spain because of its low pricing. You can transfer points from American Express Membership Rewards , Chase Ultimate Rewards and Marriott Bonvoy to Iberia. You can also transfer British Airways Avios to Iberia Avios so long as both accounts are open for at least 90 days.

How to earn points for an Iberia award to Spain

If you're under 5/24 , consider opening a Chase card to earn Chase Ultimate Rewards points. Here's a look at current signup bonuses:

  • Chase Sapphire Preferred Card – Earn 60,000 bonus points after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening.
  • Ink Business Preferred Credit Card – Earn 100,000 bonus points after you spend $8,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening.
  • Chase Sapphire Reserve – Earn 60,000 bonus points after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening.

Cheapest SkyTeam awards to Spain

american express travel barcelona

If you want to fly one of Delta's nonstop routes to Spain, start with Virgin Atlantic Flying Club. Virgin Atlantic devalued its Delta award chart earlier in the year but kept old pricing for flights to Europe. You can book one-way tickets from the U.S. to Spain for 30,000 points in economy and 50,000 in Delta One business class. This is an exceptional deal and one I highly recommend you book if you want to try Delta One across the Atlantic.

american express travel barcelona

On the other hand, you'll want to book with Flying Blue miles if eyeing nonstop flights on Air Europa or connecting tickets on Air France, Alitalia or KLM. This program prices all awards dynamically, with flights to Spain starting at 21,500 miles one-way in economy and 53,000 in business class. These prices vary by day and route, but you can find reasonably priced awards if you're flexible.

american express travel barcelona

I think Delta awards booked through Virgin Atlantic are the best deal for those flying nonstop in business class. Pricing is predictable, and you'll have a great experience in Delta One — especially if your route is operated by a plane with Delta One Suites . That said, those on connecting tickets will want to check Flying Blue pricing first since Virgin Atlantic prices partner awards leg-by-leg.

How to earn points for a Virgin Atlantic award to Spain

You can transfer points to Virgin Atlantic from Amex, Chase, Citi ThankYou and Marriott. Here's a look at Citi welcome bonuses that can help you stock up on ThankYou points:

  • Citi Premier® Card: Earn 60,000 points after you spend $4,000 in purchases within the first three months of account opening (see rates and fees).
  • Citi Prestige® Card: Earn 50,000 points after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first three months of account opening

The information for the Citi Prestige has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Cheapest Star Alliance awards to Spain

american express travel barcelona

The cheapest way to book Star Alliance tickets to Spain is with Asiana Club . You can book one-way tickets from the U.S. to Spain for 25,000 miles in economy, 40,000 in business class and 65,000 in first class. Unfortunately, you'll pay high fuel surcharges on connecting tickets operated by Austrian, Lufthansa, Swiss and other Star Alliance carriers that charge these surcharges. Thankfully, you won't pay these on nonstop United flights or connecting flights with SAS, TAP Portugal and LOT Polish Airlines.

That said, it's hard to earn Asiana miles. Here in the U.S., you can only earn with Asiana's cobranded credit card or by transferring points from Marriott Bonvoy. If you have Amex points, you'll want to book with ANA Mileage Club instead. Tickets to Spain cost just 55,000 miles round-trip in economy and 88,000 in business class. You will, however, be subject to fuel surcharges on these tickets if flying on a high-surcharger carrier. You can book with Avianca LifeMiles or Air Canada Aeroplan to avoid these.

You can maximize your ANA Mileage Club tickets by adding a free stopover to your itinerary. For example, the itinerary below will take you from Newark (EWR) to Madrid (MAD), where you can stay as long as you'd like. Then, you can find your own transportation to Barcelona, stay there, and fly to Lisbon for another stop before returning home. The whole itinerary costs just 88,000 miles and $78.84 in business class.

ANA is the better option for most travelers because its miles are far easier to earn.

Hotels in Spain you can book with points

Tourism is a huge industry in most Spanish cities, so there's no shortage of hotels. Here's a look at points options in Barcelona and Madrid. Many major hotel groups have hotels in smaller Spanish cities, so run a search with your preferred hotel if you plan to venture out.

Despite having a limited presence in Spain, Hilton's hotels in Barcelona and Madrid span multiple brands and offer something for every price point. Unfortunately, however, Hilton Honors' dynamic pricing makes it tough to give an exact estimate of how much you'll pay per night. The prices below reflect a one-night weekday stay in the middle of August.

  • Alexandra Barcelona Hotel, Curio Collection by Hilton - 54,000 points per night
  • Hilton Barcelona - 28,000 points per night
  • Hilton Diagonal Mar Barcelona - 40,000 points per night
  • Atocha Hotel Madrid, Tapestry Collection by Hilton - 27,000 points per night
  • DoubleTree by Hilton Madrid-Prado - 36,000 points per night

How to earn Hilton points

The easiest way to earn Hilton points is with a Hilton cobranded credit card. Each has a great welcome bonus and various benefits like elite status , an annual free night and more. These are the current welcome offers:

  • Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card: Earn 150,000 points after you spend $4,000 on purchases within the first three months of account opening.
  • Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card: Earn 130,000 Hilton Honors bonus points and a Free Night Reward after you spend $2,000 in purchases on the card within the first three months of card membership.
  • Hilton Honors American Express Card: Earn 70,000 Hilton Honors bonus points and a Free Night Reward after you spend $1,000 in purchases on the card in the first three months of card membership.
  • The Hilton Honors American Express Business Card: Earn 150,000 Hilton Honors bonus points and a Free Night Reward after you spend $4,000 in purchases on the Hilton Honors Business card within the first three months of card membership.

Radisson has two properties in Madrid — one under its flagship Radisson Blu brand and another under the Radisson Individuals brand. • Hotel Paseo del Arte, Radisson Individuals - No points rates available

How to earn Radisson Rewards points

You can earn Radisson Rewards points with a Radisson cobranded credit card. Here's a look at current offers:

If you're pre-booking activities, you can save by booking through the Chase Ultimate Rewards Travel Portal and paying with your Chase points. Chase Freedom cards can redeem at 1.0 cents per point, Chase Sapphire Preferred at 1.25 cents per point and Chase Sapphire Reserve at 1.5 cents per point.

You can book a skip-the-line tour of the Royal Palace for just 2,788 points in Madrid if you have a Chase Sapphire Preferred. Ground transportation

american express travel barcelona

Barcelona and Madrid are both very well-connected cities with efficient metro systems. In terms of rideshare, you'll find Uber in Madrid and the Cabify app in Barcelona. Both provide an easy way to/from the airport, but it will be more expensive than public transportation.

From Barcelona airport, you can take the R2 Nord train to downtown. The train runs every hour, and a one-way ticket costs roughly $5.55 after currency conversion. It takes 30 minutes from the airport to downtown Barcelona, which is faster than a taxi during rush hour traffic.

On the other hand, you can take the Madrid Metro from Madrid airport to downtown. You can board Metro Line 8 at the airport for the 22-minute journey to downtown. A one-way ticket costs $3.62 after currency conversion.

Regardless of how you travel from the airport, you can cover your ground transportation expenses with the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card. This card lets you offset any travel expense at a fixed value of 1 cent per mile. This means a $10 taxi ride requires just 1,000 Capital One miles to cover. You can redeem miles for a charge up to 90 days after making a purchase.

Bottom line

Whether you're exploring all of Spain or just stopping for a night, you can use points and miles for a better and less expensive travel experience. Bookmark this article and refer to it when booking your post-pandemic trip to Spain. It will save you hours of research that you can use to plan the places you'll visit and foods you'll eat. And trust me, there's no shortage of either.

Safe travels!

Fancy a short trip to Barcelona? Our recommendations for a weekend in the Catalan capital.

Written by Stephanie Kleinlein 15.03.2024

Shopping in Barcelona

Whether it’s glamorous fashion, intellectually stimulating literature or Generation Z outdoor markets. You can easily spend an entire weekend shopping in Barcelona. The fact that this major city is somehow different from the rest of the country is also reflected in the locals’ tastes. In many places, traditional handicraft techniques are still used, which are experiencing a revival with the latest fashion trends.

Shops in Barcelona

Bulevard rosa.

It’s best to start your stroll through the city well dressed. In the Bulevard Rosa Mall you will find international luxury labels as well as those with Catalan local color.

Shopping can be this ingenious. La Central is a really lovely bookshop. If you have time on your hands, you can read your new book in the discreetly concealed garden bar.

Palo Alto Market

On the first weekend of every month, the Palo Alto Market attracts half the city and its visitors. Open-air culture and beautiful, creative commerce are the recipe for success.

Mandarin Oriental

Enjoy Gaudí’s neighborhood. The Mandarin Oriental is located on Passeig de Gràcia, not far from his architectural marvels and the city’s most exclusive stores.

Take a look at the website of this member of the world’s best Small Luxury Hotels first. You will quickly realize that the Wittmore is pretty different.

This gem was created when two townhouses were merged in the 18th century. The blend of history and modern design is unique, as is the rooftop oasis.

Restaurants und Bars in Barcelona

Eating and going out – nothing is more simple than that in Barcelona. Simply succumb to the temptations along the way or head purposefully towards our recommendations in the urban jungle. For example, there is an internationally renowned top restaurant, an exquisite "drink and dine" option and a bar where everything revolves around money.

Boca grande.

The Boca Grande – meaning "big mouth" – is a trendy meeting place for the hungry and thirsty with high standards. The interior is fantastic and the Boca Chica bar can be found in the same building.

Disfrutar is one of the top 50 restaurants in the world. Over 2,500 reviews with an overall rating of 4.8 stars prove that this ranking stands up to the reality check. Bona gana!

Mandarin Oriental Bar

Have another drink here to be on the safe side. The Mandarin Oriental bar is located in the vault of a former bank. Even the safe deposit boxes are still there.

Impressive views over the city and a historic building complex where it must have been nice to convalesce. Plus a museum from which you can take home super-sweet memories. Even if you are Belgian or Swiss. Enjoy your walks through Barcelona. It’s worth stopping off at these three locations and staying for a while.

Museu de la Xocolata

Not only Switzerland and Belgium, but also Barcelona has given chocolate a place of honor. If you have a sweet tooth, you will be in your element at the Museu de la Xocolata.

Sant Pau Hospital

If only Gaudí springs to mind when you think of Barcelona, you won’t have heard of the Sant Pau Hospital. The imposing hospital is a masterpiece of modernism and is a UNSECO World Heritage Site.

Castell de Montjuic

Enjoy the view over the whole of Barcelona! The cable car takes you up to Castell de Montjuïc, a historic building that was erected in the 17th century as a military camp.

Few Spanish cities encapsulate the vibe of summer quite like Barcelona, with its long stretches of sandy beaches, vast gardens, and plenty of spots to grab a gelato. The Catalan capital is also famous for hosting architectural wonders by Antoni Gaudi including La Sagrada Familia and Park Guell. From storied fortresses and cathedrals to vibrant neighborhoods inspired by Catalan Modernism, Barcelona is an ideal antidote to our everyday Covid blues.

If you’ve spent the past year stocking up points in your favorite currency, why not redeem them on a trip to Barcelona? Here are a few properties that are great options for redeeming your points in BCN, and we think you should check them out.

Cards to Help You Earn Hilton Points

Hilton has a long-standing partnership with American Express and offers four different co-branded cards: three personal cards and one business card. Here, we’ll mention the perks of our favorite personal card as well as the business card.

Hilton Honors Business Card

Perfect for business owners on the go, The Hilton Honors American Express Business Card ( rates & fees ) is a card with decent earning potential and plenty of travel benefits. While it comes with a $95 annual fee, cardholders earn 12X Bonus Points per $1USD spent on Hilton purchases, 6X Bonus Points per $1USD on flights booked directly with airlines or through Amex Travel, and on car rentals booked directly through select car rental agencies, and 3X Bonus Points per $1USD spent on all other eligible purchases.

In addition, this card is an excellent way to jump straight to Gold Status; a $95 annual fee is a pretty small price to pay considering that benefit. Plus, you’ll have the opportunity to upgrade to Diamond Status depending on how much you’re planning on using the card, which is a definite bonus.

The Hilton Honors American Express Business Card

The Hilton Honors American Express Business Card

Hilton Honors Bonus Points

after you spend $6,000 in purchases on the Hilton Honors Business Card within the first six months of Card Membership.

Hilton Honors Aspire

The Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card is our favorite credit card in the collection, and it comes with a hefty $550 annual fee. At first glance, it might not seem worth it to splurge on a high-fee card when the Bonus Points earning potential is only marginally better than the other three cards in the collection. However, when weighing the annual fee against the additional benefits, it might be a good deal if you’re looking to skyrocket your status.

Cardholders earn 14X Bonus Points per $1USD spent on Hilton purchases, 7X Bonus Points per $1USD spent on purchases at US restaurants, flights booked directly with the airline or through Amex Travel, and cars booked directly through select car rental agencies, and 3X Bonus Points per $1USD spent on all other eligible purchases. Note that the value of the accompanying travel benefits surpasses the annual fee, so as long as you’re planning on using the benefits, this card is well worth it.

But Barcelona is famous for its captivating design, and this property is just one of many interesting architectural wonders to explore during your stay.

Chase Travel Portal

The above properties are wonderful options for hotels in Barcelona, but they aren’t so exciting if you haven’t stocked up on a bunch of points in exactly the right currency. If you don’t have a stash of brand-specific points lying around, there is another option.

Many credit cards offer their own rewards programs that include the opportunity to redeem points on travel. If you’ve been stockpiling credit card rewards instead of brand-specific hotel rewards, a trip to Barcelona could be a great way to redeem them.

For example, you could use your stash of Chase Ultimate Rewards Points to book your hotel. When Chase points are redeemed on travel purchases through the Ultimate Rewards Portal , they are worth 50% more than other select categories. That bonus is a great incentive to use them on a trip to Barcelona! Here are a couple of excellent properties in Barcelona that can be booked using Chase Ultimate Rewards points.

Hotel Casa Fuster

Featuring an incredibly cool and castle-like facade, the Hotel Casa Fuster is a great Barcelona home base. Located in the Gracia neighborhood, gaudi favorites like Casa Mila and Casa Batllo are just steps away. A night at this property ranges between just over 14,000 – 61,000 Ultimate Rewards Points, depending on which room you would like.

Panic in famous European city about £1bn plan to attract 'super-rich' tourists

Barcelona welcomes 12 million visitors a year. now officials hope hosting the america's cup will give it a boost by attracting 'higher quality' tourists..

 Barceloneta watefornt area in Barcelona

Locals in the Spanish city of Barcelona fear plans to attract €1bn of revenue by pandering to super-rich tourists will turn their home into a playground for the wealthy - like Monte Carlo or Monaco.

Barcelona currently attracts around 12 million visitors a year - and its residents have long complained about the impacts of over-tourism.  However, the city's latest attempt to attract " quality rather than quantity" tourism has got some Barcelonians panicked.

They fear hosting the America’s Cup yacht race in the city this year will price out all but the wealthiest visitors. And locals fear it will have an even worse impact on them than mass tourism has done.

Mateu Hernández, the head of the public-private body Barcelona Tourism, has defended the plan. He said that The  America’s Cup - which started on August 22 and runs until October 27 - is a magnet for people "who love the sea and have plenty of disposable income".

"We are interested in these people," he said. "We need to improve the quality of those who visit. But people confuse quality with wealth. What we want is people who come here to do something, whether it’s to visit museums or enjoy the architecture and the gastronomy .”

However, his vision is not shared by all. Opponents of the America’s Cup plan say they do not see how Barcelonians will benefit, reports The Guardian .

Supporters of the British America's Cup team

Martí Cusó is a spokesperson for the Platform Against the Cup, an umbrella group representing about 150 community organisations. He said no one has explained where or how the hoped-for €1bn in revenue is going to be distributed.

Mr Cusó said that property rents have already increased in Barceloneta - the seafront neighbourhood that would be a focal point during America's Cup. And mooring fees for sailing yachts have reportedly soared from €1,000 to €15,000 a month for the duration of the competition.

Mr Cusó said that people are also concerned that hosting the competition "reinforces the idea" that Barcelona's economy is based on tourism .  "What we want is diversification," added Mr Cuso.

Protesters in Barcelona

Ivy Scrancher, a local yacht skipper, has also slammed the plan. He claims that very few of the race organisers were local.

He said that  "all the people who are actually making money from this big event aren’t from here”. Scrancher added: "They come from New Zealand or Australia or elsewhere.

"They make 12 or 20 grand a month and take it back home. The only Spanish people involved are volunteers.”

Esther Jorquera, who lives in Barceloneta, agreed. She said that 2,000 people had been asked to volunteer - which should have been 2,000 new jobs.

“They promised us jobs and then ask us to work for free,” she added
