Southwest Airlines plans drastic boarding and seating changes

Southwest Airlines has an identity. It's a disruptor in the airline space because it notably breaks industry norms.

The company prides itself on not charging baggage fees and not offering first- or business-class seats. It also has a semi-democratic boarding process in which nobody has an assigned seat.

Related: Starbucks makes bold change with key fast food partnership

Instead, passengers pick seats as they board. There are paid and loyalty-program ways to get earlier boarding spots, but in a broad sense the airline has no assigned seats and many fewer fees than its rivals.

The model has worked for most of the airline's history, but it has faltered recently. Southwest lost $231 million in the first quarter and has struggled to fill its seats.

That has led the activist investor Elliott Capital Management to take a $2 billion stake in the airline. Southwest has adopted a poison pill, which dilutes the stake of any shareholder whose stake climbs over 12.5% without approval by the board.

Even with that provision in place, it's fair to say the company is feeling the pressure. Chief Executive Bob Jordan, who has faced calls for his job, made clear during the airline's first-quarter-earnings call  that LUV is looking at making changes.

Southwest Airlines considers major changes

Jordan said the airline is mulling significant changes to its seating policies.

"We are considering more transformational options and follow-on initiatives. That includes work previously underway to study customer preference around seating and our cabin," he said.

Jordan made clear that everything was on the table, while the airline wants to maintain its standing with customers.

"It's been several years since we last studied this in depth, and customer preferences and expectations change over time," he added. "We are also studying the operational and financial benefits of any potential change."

Jordan tried to both embrace and play down the potential changes.

"We remain committed to our industry best customer-friendly policies, but we are also committed to understanding and meeting customer expectations," he said. "We have transformed before, adding things like WiFi, larger bins, and in-seat power, and we will continue to adapt as needed."

These are the changes Southwest may make

Southwest has been quiet about which specific changes it's considering, but View From the Wing's Gary Leff has some insight into what might happen.

Nothing has been formally decided, but clearly the airline is trying to maintain its no-fee identity while also, well, adding some fees.

The airline, Leff shared , is considering assigning seats, offering premium extra-legroom seats, and offering a no-frills fare that does not include checked bags. That latter idea looks a lot like the basic-economy fares offered on most major airlines.

" Love Cabin would be extra-legroom seats at the front of the aircraft," he wrote.

That could involve taking seats out of the planes or keeping the number of seats the same and making a different change.

Related: More national retailers drop self-checkout to fight retail theft

"Currently Southwest offers more legroom than standard economy compared to Delta, American, or United," Leff wrote. "They do not advertise their legroom advantage versus competitors. Regular coach seating could get tighter."

The airline is also considering allowing passengers to pay to have nobody sitting in the middle seat. That would require assigned seating in at least some rows. And the product can be sold twice since the passenger on the aisle would have no way to know whether the window passenger had already paid for it (and vice versa).

Southwest's biggest potential change — a basic-economy fare that might or might not include checked bags — would also be the largest risk.

"I’ve heard several reports that the airline is working on a replacement for their cheapest Wanna Get Away fare," Leff wrote.

"Presumably, these passengers would board last and have last choice of seats. ... Two free checked bags are so baked into Southwest’s value proposition that this could remain, although I’ve heard it both ways."

The Best Thing You Can Do To Make Sure Your Suitcase Doesn't Get Lost

On Assignment For HuffPost

Don't get caught staring at an empty belt at baggage claim. Take these steps to keep tabs on your luggage.

While convenient, checking a bag at the airport is stressful for a few reasons. First, you have to budget for extra time on each end of your trip (and if you’ve ever traveled with kids or with a group, you know how difficult that is to coordinate). You have to get to the airport early to check your bags, and after you de-plane, you have to wait at the carousel while the people who were savvy enough to only bring a carry-on are already headed home.

Then there’s the situation every traveler dreads most: waiting at that carousel until the very last bag has been picked up, and realizing yours isn’t there. While there are a lot of systems in place to make sure bags don’t get lost during air travel, between missed connections and the fact that we’re all human, it does happen occasionally.

If you have travel coming up and are hoping to avoid this frustrating, potentially trip-ruining scenario, we’ve got you covered. According to travel experts we spoke to, there are a few things you can do to make sure your bag doesn’t end up in another city ― or at least locate it quickly if it does.

Experts No. 1 tip? Use a tracker.

All the travel experts we spoke with agreed: When it comes to keeping track of your luggage, Apple Air Tags or other Bluetooth luggage trackers are key.

In case you’re unfamiliar with these location-tracking devices, Air Tags can be added to items and easily located through the “Find My” app on an iPhone. “These aren’t too expensive and can easily be slipped inside your checked bag, with a custom name made by you in your iPhone’s Find My app,” said Elad Schaffer , CEO of Faye Travel Insurance.

Summer Hull , director of content at the travel website The Points Guy, added that readers of their site are big fans of the Air Tag, as well as luggage trackers the airline may offer. “These trackers allow you to keep track of luggage via Bluetooth or GSM technology,” Hull said.

To be clear, a tracker can’t technically stop your suitcase from getting lost, but it can help you locate it very quickly — potentially helping the airport reunite you with your bag sooner .

There are a few other ways you can keep track of your bag when you travel.

Other tips for keeping track of your bag.

Tracking devices can be hugely helpful, but there are also tons of other ways to keep tabs on your bag. They include:

1. Making sure your suitcase is noticeable

Schaffer said that while basic black luggage will never go out of style, it doesn’t exactly stand out in a crowd.

“It’s always good to make sure your suitcase is noticeable when it comes out on the carousel. If you have a basic dark blue or black suitcase like everyone else, try to place a distinguishing piece of decoration on it, like colorful luggage tags, to make sure it stands out and no one grabs it by accident,” he said.

Rocky Trifari , a U.S.-based travel expert and founder of the travel blog The Rocky Safari, also pointed this out. “Make your luggage stand out with a brightly colored strap, ribbon or sticker,” he said. “This helps prevent someone else from mistakenly taking your bag and makes it easier to spot on the carousel.”

2. Removing existing labels from previous trips

If you’re a frequent traveler, you may have a few old luggage tags still on your suitcase from previous trips. If you want to give your bag the best possible chance of making it to its final destination, take them off.

“Remove all existing labels and barcode tags from your previous trips,” Hull said. “You may also want to put a bag tag inside of your bag in addition to the one attached to the outside.”

Trifari said adding a luggage tag with clear contact information can help. “Use a durable luggage tag with your name, phone number and email address,” he explained. “Include a copy of your itinerary inside your bag in case the tag gets lost.”

3. Choose direct flights when possible

It isn’t always possible — or affordable — to choose a direct flight. But when it is, it’s wise to skip the layover if possible.

“Direct flights reduce the risk of your luggage being mishandled during transfers. If you must have a layover, try to allow ample time between connections,” Trifari said.

4. Keep an eye on the printer

Sometimes, a simple printing mistake can be responsible for sending your luggage to a very different destination from where you’re headed. So once your bag label is printed, make sure to examine it carefully.

“Does it have the right airport and code? Your correct name and frequent flyer number? If you qualify for elite and priority tags, make sure they’re added as well,” Hull said. “You should also stay and watch to make sure your luggage is put on the conveyor belt or added to the cart.”

5. Get to the airport early, but not too early

When it comes to air travel, we’re taught that the earlier you get to the airport, the better. And for the most part that’s true — but checking in too early comes with risks.

“If you show up four to six hours pre-departure to check in, luggage might go into a holding area instead of sorted into the area for your flight,” Hull said. If this happens, your bag can get lost more easily.

If your luggage does happen to get lost, it’s important to alert the airline as quickly as possible. “If your luggage is lost, report it to the airline’s baggage service counter as soon as possible. Provide them with a detailed description of your bag and any unique identifiers,” Trifari said. “Sometimes, reaching out to the airline on social media can expedite the process. Many airlines monitor their social media accounts closely and respond quickly to public posts.”

With that in mind, these measures can go a long way when it comes to keeping track of your bag and making sure it gets where it’s supposed to go. Safe travels!

1. BUSINESS APPOINTMENT APPLICATION: Air Chief Marshal Sir Michael Wigston KCB CBE, former Chief of the Air Staff Ministry of Defence. Paid appointment with Earendel Associates Ltd.

Air Chief Marshal Sir Michael sought advice from the Advisory Committee on Business Appointments (the Committee) under the government’s Business Appointments Rules for former Crown servants (the Rules) on taking up an appointment with Earendel Associates Limited (Earendel Associates) as an Associate.

The purpose of the Rules is to protect the integrity of the government. The Committee has considered the risks associated with the actions and decisions made during Air Chief Marshal Sir Michael’s time in office, alongside the information and influence a former Chief of the Air Staff may offer Earendel Associates. The material information taken into consideration by the Committee is set out in the annex.

The Committee’s advice is not an endorsement of the appointment – it imposes a number of conditions to mitigate the potential risks to the government associated with the appointment under the Rules.

The Rules [footnote 1] set out that Crown servants must abide by the Committee’s advice. It is an applicant’s personal responsibility to manage the propriety of any appointment. Former Crown servants are expected to uphold the highest standards of propriety and act in accordance with the 7 Principles of Public Life.

2. The Committee’s consideration of the risk presented

The Committee [footnote 2] noted that there is no relationship between the Ministry of Defence (MOD) and Earendel Associates. Air Chief Marshal Sir Michael did not meet with Earendel Associates whilst in government, nor did he make any decisions specific to the company. The Committee therefore considered the risk this appointment could reasonably be perceived as a reward for decisions or actions taken in office is low.

Though Earendel Associates does not specialise in defence, as the former Chief of Air Staff, the Committee noted that Sir Michael would have had significant access to a broad range of classified and sensitive information linked to defence, as well as MOD capabilities, that could provide an unfair advantage to Earendel Associates and its clients. The Committee noted there are a number of mitigating factors that help to reduce the risks associated with Air Chief Marshal Sir Michael’s access to information and insight that may be seen to offer Earendel Associates an unfair advantage:

This risk is broad and generic in nature as the proposed role does not overlap with his responsibilities in office. The MOD is not aware of any specific information that would be of use to Earendel Associates and the focus of this work.

Air Chief Marshal Sir Michael ceased having access to sensitive information from his last day in the role, in June 2023. It has therefore been 6 months since he had access to sensitive information, reducing the likelihood that his knowledge is sufficiently up to date.

He is also prevented from drawing on privileged information from his time in office and has an ongoing duty of confidentiality.

The Committee considered that there is a significant risk associated with the unknown nature of Earendel Associates’ clients and the risk Air Chief Marshal Sir Michael may advise on matters directly related to his responsibilities in service.

The Committee also noted that Air Chief Marshal Sir Michael will have amassed a network of contacts in the UK and internationally - within other governments and private companies, particularly in the defence sector. The Committee therefore considered that there is a risk associated with Air Chief Marshal Sir Michael’s network and influence that could be used to unfairly advantage Earendel Associates or its clients.

3. The Committee’s advice

Given Air Chief Marshal Sir Michael’s seniority within the MOD the Rules mandate a 3-month waiting period to provide a gap between leaving service and joining an outside appointment. However, this time has now passed.

The Committee determined the risks identified in this application can be appropriately mitigated by the conditions below. These make it clear Air Chief Marshal Sir Michael cannot make use of his access to privileged information or influence gained from his time in Crown service to the unfair advantage of Earendel Associates and its clients. In particular, alongside the standard conditions, the Committee imposed restrictions on the work to prevent Air Chief Marshal Sir Michael from: advising on policy or operational matters he had specific involvement in or responsibility for during his time at the MOD; advising Earendel Associates on the UK defence sector; and lobbying contacts he made in other governments and organisations outside of the MOD and UK government.

The Committee advises, under the Government’s Business Appointment Rules, that Air Chief Marshal Sir Michael’s role with Earendel Associates Ltd should be subject to the following conditions:

he should not draw on (disclose or use for the benefit of himself or the persons or organisations to which this advice refers) any privileged information available to him from his time in Crown service;

for two years from his last day in Crown service, he should not become personally involved in lobbying the UK government or any of its arm’s length bodies on behalf of Earendel Associates (including parent companies, subsidiaries, partners and clients); nor should he make use, directly or indirectly, of his contacts in government and/or Crown service to influence policy, secure business/funding or otherwise unfairly advantage Earendel Associates  (including parent companies, subsidiaries, partners and clients);

for two years from his last day in Crown service, he should not provide advice to Earendel Associates (including parent companies, subsidiaries, partners and clients) on the terms of, or with regard to the subject matter of, a bid or contract with, or relating directly to the work of the UK government, the Ministry of Defence or its trading funds;

for two years from his last day in Crown service, he should not become personally involved in lobbying contacts he has developed during his time in office in external organisations (including other governments) for the purpose of securing business for Earendel Associates (including parent companies, subsidiaries and partners);

for two years from his last day in Crown service, he should not advise Earendel Associates or its clients on any matters relating to the whole of the UK defence sector; and

for two years from his last day in Crown service, he should not advise Earendel Associates (including parent companies, subsidiaries, partners and clients) on work with regard to any policy or operational matter he had specific involvement or responsibility for as Chief of Air Staff at the Ministry of Defence, or where he had a relationship with the company or organisation during his time at the Ministry of Defence.

The advice and the conditions under the government’s Business Appointment Rules relate to your previous role in government only; they are separate from rules administered by other bodies such as the Office of the Registrar of Consultant Lobbyists, the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards and the Registrar of Lords’ Interests. [footnote 3] It is an applicant’s personal responsibility to understand any other rules and regulations they may be subject to in parallel with this Committee’s advice.

By ‘privileged information’ we mean official information to which a Minister or Crown servant has had access as a consequence of his or her office or employment and which has not been made publicly available. Applicants are also reminded that they may be subject to other duties of confidentiality, whether under the Official Secrets Act, the Civil Service Code or otherwise.

The Business Appointment Rules explain that the restriction on lobbying means that the former Crown servant/Minister ‘should not engage in communication with Government (Ministers, civil servants, including special advisers, and other relevant officials/public office holders) – wherever it takes place - with a view to influencing a Government decision, policy or contract award/grant in relation to their own interests or the interests of the organisation by which they are employed, or to whom they are contracted or with which they hold office’.

Air Chief Marshal Sir Michael must inform us as soon as he takes up employment with this organisation, or if it is announced that he will do so, by emailing the office at the above address.

He must also inform us if he proposes to extend or otherwise change the nature of his role as, depending on the circumstances, it may be necessary for him to make a fresh application.

Once the appointment has been publicly announced or taken up, we will publish this letter on the Committee’s website, and where appropriate, refer to it in the relevant annual report.

4. Annex - Material information

4.1 the role.

Air Chief Marshal Sir Michael said he has been offered a paid, part-time appointment with Earendel Associates as an Associate.

Air Chief Marshal Sir Michael said that his responsibilities in the role would be as follows:

  • Contribute to strategic reports, assessments and advice; and
  • Provide briefings and seminars - for private sector clients, covering geopolitical challenges with a specific focus on space.

He said he would have no contact with the government in this role.

4.2 Dealings in office

Air Chief Marshal Sir Michael advised the Committee he did not meet with Earendel Associates whilst in office. He said he did not have involvement in any policy development or decisions that would have been specific to the company, and held no commercial or contractual responsibilities relating to it. He said he did not meet with competitors of the company, nor did he have access to sensitive information regarding these competitors.

4.3 Department Assessment

The MOD confirmed the details Air Chief Marshal Sir Michael provided.

The MOD said that there was a risk of undue use of privileged knowledge should Air Chief Marshal Sir Michael become involved in advising on specific commercial transactions in areas of capability, for which he had responsibility for requirement-setting in his role as Chief of the Air Staff. MOD recommended Air Chief Marshal Sir Michael should be prevented from working on such cases.

MOD said that this, alongside the standard conditions, would make this appointment suitable for Air Chief Marshal Sir Michael.

Biden digs in despite lapses, alarming polls, doubts: 6 takeaways from ABC interview

travel by air 3 letters

WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden  dismissed concerns about his mental fitness Friday and rejected calls to drop out of the 2024 election as he pushed back at detractors in perhaps the most consequential television interview of his presidency.

Biden, in an interview with ABC News anchor George Stephanopoulos that aired on primetime television, reiterated he won't withdraw from the race following his disastrous debate last week, downplaying his performance as a "bad night" because of fatigue and a "really bad cold."

The 22-minute interview was Biden's first on television since his dismal debate performance in which the incumbent president struggled to complete thoughts, finish sentences and rebut claims made by former President Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee.

Here are six takeaways from the interview, which was taped during Biden's campaign visit Friday afternoon to Madison, Wisconsin.

Biden says he won't even entertain exiting race

Biden dug in as Stephanopoulos repeatedly pressed Biden whether he would end his candidacy if Democratic congressional leaders came to him to convince him he can't defeat Trump in November.

"Well, if the Lord Almighty comes down and tells me to do that, I might do that," Biden said, later insisting that his Democratic allies aren't going to demand that he exit.

"I'm not going to answer that question. It's not going to happen," Biden said. "I've not seen what you're proposing."

Biden said he's seen concerns about his candidacy "from the press," but not heard it from most Democrats.

Five Democratic members of Congress have publicly called for Biden to drop out of the race. The Washington Post reported Friday that U.S. Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., is working on assembling a group of Democratic senators to ask Biden to exit the presidential race

Biden won't commit to a cognitive test

Biden said he has not taken a neurological or cognitive test to measure his mental fitness, nor would he commit to an independent medical evaluation that includes such an exam.

"No, no one said I had to. They said I'm good," Biden said, adding that he takes a cognitive test "every single day" given the demands and responsibilities of being president.

More: Biden refuses to say whether he'd take independent cognitive test and make results public

"Everything I do, I have that test," Biden said. "Not only am I campaigning but I'm running the world."

Asked again whether he would take a cognitive test to assure Americans of his health, Biden again refused.

"Watch me. There's a lot of time left in this campaign. It's over 125 days."

Biden says he doesn't believe polls showing him losing

Despite Trump leading Biden in virtually all national polls and in most battleground states Biden said he doesn't believe he's currently losing.

"I don't buy that," Biden said. "All the pollsters I talk to tell me it's a toss-up."

Biden also said he doesn't buy that his approval rating is as low as 36%, which some polls have found.

"I don't believe that's my approval rating. That's not what our polls show," he said.

Even before Biden's disastrous debate, Democrats were growing more nervous about a second Trump presidency because of polls showing Biden consistently behind the former president.

When asked whether he's being honest with himself about his ability to beat Trump, Biden responded: "Yes, yes, yes, yes.''

"Look, I remember them telling me the same thing in 2020 − the polls show I can't win," Biden said.

At the end of his interview, Biden gave an answer that is sure to upset his detractors on how he would feel in January if Trump wins the election.

“I’ll feel as long as I gave it my all and I did as good a job as I know I can do, that’s what this is about," Biden said.

'I'm still in good shape,' Biden insists

Biden insisted that he's in good enough physical and mental condition to serve in the White House another four years.

"Can I run a hundred in 10 flat? No. But I'm still in good shape," said Biden, who spoke clearer than he did in the debate but still sounded hoarse at times.

Biden said he is not frail or in worse condition than when he entered the White House three and a half years ago.

"I wouldn't be running if I didn't think I did," he said about whether he can serve another four years, which would make him 86 years old at the end of his term.

Stephanopoulos asked if Biden was being honest with himself.

"Yes, I am. George, the last thing I want to do is not being able to meet that," Biden said.

Biden says he hasn't watched the debate

Biden said he hasn't watched his heavily criticized debate, which was now eight days ago.

"I don't think I did − no," Biden said.

Biden said his performance was "nobody's fault but mine," and that he prepared for it by going over material in "explicit detail," like he does for meetings with foreign leaders with his National Security Council.

Biden said he had trouble keeping up with all of Trump's lies.

Biden was asked about recent comments from former Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi calling it a "legitimate question" to ask whether Biden's debate performance was a "bad episode" or a sign of a more serious "condition."

"It was a bad episode," Biden said. "No indication of a more serious condition. I was exhausted. I didn't listen to my instincts in terms of preparing. I had a bad night."

Biden says recent travel made him tired because of 'really bad cold'

Biden was pressed how could have been tired from recent overseas travel − which he has claimed − when he returned to the United States 12 days before the debate took place.

"Because I was sick. I was feeling terrible," he said, adding that he felt so bad that he had his doctors test him for COVID and other viruses, which turned out negative. "They just said I had a really bad cold."

Biden spent the six days leading up to the debate at the Camp David presidential retreat preparing with top White House aides.

  • Delta Air Lines posted record-breaking Q2 revenues in Q2 2024, yet the airline's cost growth outpaced revenue growth.
  • Its net profit was also 11% lower, with the airline's president promising that capacity growth would decelerate going forward.
  • Delta Air Lines has kept its full-year guidance that it initially presented during its Q1 2024 results announcement.

Delta Air Lines has announced its latest Q2 2024 results, delivering record-breaking Q2 revenues and a net profit. However, year-on-year (YoY), its quarterly net profit plummeted by nearly 11%, with cost growth eclipsing revenue increases compared to the same quarter a year prior.

Decelerating capacity growth

In his opening statement, Glen Hauenstein, the president of Delta Air Lines , remarked that peak summer travel demand has remained strong and, consistent with the airline’s guidance, it delivered record Q2 revenues, increasing by 5.4% YoY.

“Diverse revenue streams, including premium and loyalty, contributed higher growth and margins, underpinning Delta's industry-leading financial performance and increasing our financial durability.”

Hauenstein added that with Delta Air Lines’ international and domestic hubs approaching a complete recovery compared to pre-pandemic levels, it will begin retiring aircraft at a normal rate once again. As a result, the airline’s capacity growth will slow, and as such, its Q3 capacity should grow 5% to 6% YoY, resulting in revenues growing by between 2% and 4% YoY.

Commenting on the airline’s financial performance, Dan Janki, the chief financial officer (CFO) of Delta Air Lines, remarked that the carrier hit the midpoint of its Q2 guidance with earnings per share (EPS) of $2.36 per share.

Janki added that the airline’s operational excellence drove an incremental point of capacity growth and favorable unit cost, with non-fuel unit costs rising by only 0.6% YoY. Looking forward, Janki expected that Delta Air Lines’ non-fuel unit costs would grow by 1% to 2% YoY in Q3.

Delta Air Lines Marks 14% Corporate Travel Growth Amid Strong Q1 Results

The airline exceeded expectations and has forecast a strong Q2.

Costs outpacing revenues

Nevertheless, Delta Air Lines ended the second quarter of 2024 with adjusted revenues of $15.4 billion, or 5.4% more than in Q2 2023. However, with adjusted operating costs rising to $13.1 billion (an increase of 8% YoY), its adjusted operating margin dropped to 14.7%, compared to 17.1% during the corresponding period in 2023.

Still, the airline ended the quarter with a net profit, with an adjusted net income of $1.5 billion, or $195 million fewer than in Q2 2023, a decrease of 11%. Delta Air Lines ' latest quarterly financials showed that adjusted non-fuel costs and fuel-related expenses rose by 9% and 12%, respectively.

Its premium products have continued to drive up the airline’s revenues. With the carrier’s unaudited, meaning unchecked, passenger revenues being $13.8 billion, 40.5% of this income came from its premium products, or $5.6 billion. The premium cabin-related passenger revenues grew by 10% YoY, while main cabin ticket revenue was pretty much flat, increasing by $22 million.

The remaining unaudited passenger revenues came from loyalty travel awards ($975 million), while travel-related services brought in another $517 million. Overall, its unaudited passenger revenues grew by 5% YoY.

Sticking to its full-year guidance

Despite some worrying signs, including dipping profits despite Q2 being one of the two peak quarters during the year, Delta Air Lines has stuck with its initial full-year guidance, which it issued when it announced its Q1 2024 results in April 2024.

Reiterating the guidance, the airline estimated that its EPS would be in the range of $6 to $7, with a free cash flow of between $3 billion and $4 billion, while its adjusted debt to Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, amortization, and restructuring or rent costs (EBITDAR) would be from 2x to 3x.

Meanwhile, its Q3 2024 guidance estimated that Delta Air Lines’ revenues during the quarter would climb from 5% to 7%, with an operating margin of 14% to 15%. Lastly, its quarterly EPS should be in the $2.20 to $2.50 range.
