Be Mindful Of These U.S. Airports With The Most And Least TSA Complaints

Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR)'s TSA ranked as the most complained about, getting nearly twice as much as the average.

A new and revealing Upgraded Points study shared which airport TSA (Transportation Security Administration) in the U.S. left flyers with the most ire. Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR)’s airport security ranked as the most complained about, getting nearly twice as much as the average. Nearly 45% of the complaints at the  New York City-adjacent  airport reportedly pertained to issues with TSA PreCheck.

The study analyzed TSA Contact Center Complaint data from 2015 to 2023. Upgraded Points  looked  into the number and types of grievances filed against airport security at 44 large U.S. airports. To be clear, the source didn’t explicitly specify that it analyzed the TSA complaints of the country’s largest airports.

From 2015 to 2023, Newark Liberty acquired 6.83 complaints for every 100,000 flyers. For comparison, the study found the average number of filed accusations to be 3.92 per 100,000 people funneled through an airport’s security check.

Following Newark Liberty, the second, third, and fourth most complained about TSA teams were in Florida airports. They were Palm Beach (PBI), Orlando (MCO), and Southwest Florida (RSW), consecutively. Cleveland Hopkins International Airport (CLE) rounded out the top five.

The end-of-year holiday season — October through December — racked up the most complaints. The most common issue flyers had was with expedited screening programs (like TSA PreCheck). Another common one was the alleged  mishandling of passenger property . The least filed complaints regarded pat downs,  civil rights , and lost and found inquiries.

Which Airports’ TSA Were The Least Complained About?

The airport with the least grumblings against its TSA from 2025 to 2023 was Charlotte Douglas (CLT). Dallas Fort Worth (DFW), Salt Lake City (SLC), and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta (ATL) followed consecutively. Over that period, Charlotte Douglas averaged 1.97 complaints per 100,000 flyers.

Chicago Midway (MDW) and Minneapolis Saint Paul (MSP) tied for fifth place regarding the airline hubs with the least problematic airport security.

Travellers have been warned to expect delays as tradies plan to walk off the job for 24 hours at a major Australian airport next week.

More than 30 tradies responsible for the smooth running of the luggage conveyor systems and airbridges at Brisbane’s domestic and international airport will strike on Monday.

The industrial action could impact the movement of luggage and commuters travelling through the airports if the conveyor system breaks down.

The action was organised by members of the Electrical Trades Union (ETU) and Australian Manufacturing Workers’ Union employed by Alstef Group.

ETU deputy secretary Scott Reichman said the strike was triggered by Alstef’s disrespect for the highly skilled and vital work performed by the team.

“This small but important workforce including electricians and mechanical fitters are a vital cog which enables the smooth running of airline services,” he said.

“They don’t take this action lightly.

“They have been extremely disappointed with Alstef’s lack of respect for the work they perform, during this current bargaining round, the wages and conditions on offer are subpar and well below what members are seeking.”

However, Brisbane Airport have rostered dozens of additional staff to assist with luggage in the event there are any breakdowns on Monday, to ensure flights continue to operate.

Brisbane Airport head of public affairs Henry Tuttiett said they were aware of the industrial action by members of the ETU and AMWU who are employed by Alstef.

“Travellers should not be alarmed and continue to turn up at the airport at their normal time,” Mr Tuttiett said.

“Brisbane Airport recognises the role unions play in advocating on behalf of its members in negotiations with their employer and we look forward to both parties reaching a fair outcome without major disruptions to the travelling public.”

Alstef have been contacted for comment.

Federal agents in Australia arrested an airline passenger Thursday who officials said opened a commercial plane's emergency exit door, walked along a wing, and climbed down a jet engine to the tarmac.

A passenger on Jetstar flight JQ507, which departed earlier from Sydney, exited the aircraft via the emergency exit upon arrival into Melbourne Airport , officials said.

The international airport is in the capital of the Australian state of Victoria , in the southeastern portion of the country.

Jetstar, a subsidiary of Qantas - Australia's flag carrier, is a low-cost airline based in Melbourne.

Cam Beaman, a spokesperson for the airport, told USA TODAY, the aircraft was parked at the time of the incident.

Alana Grech, a spokesperson for Jetstar, told USA TODAY the plane had landed and was parked at a gate when the passenger opened the emergency exit door automatically deploying the slide.

"The passenger exited via the emergency exit and walked along the wing before making his way down to the ground via the engine," Grech said.

"Melbourne Airport is proud of the exceptional response from ground crew, which meant there was no immediate danger to other passengers or airport staff," Beaman said.

Officials did not release the passenger's name or say where they are from.

"We thank our passengers for their patience and understanding while our team assisted the AFP to manage this incident," Grech said.

Kirov Oblast is a federal subject of Russia located in the central-eastern part of European Russia, part of the Volga Federal District. Kirov (former Vyatka) is the capital city of the region.

History of kirov oblast.

Vyatka land was inhabited in ancient times (about 50-15 thousand years ago). In the second half of the 1st century AD, a number of Udmurt, Mari, Komi tribes began to form in the region on the basis of the Finno-Ugric language community. Most of the area was covered with virgin forests and swamps. The main occupations of the population were agriculture, cattle-breeding and hunting.

At the end of the 12th - early 13th centuries, Russians began to settle in vacant land among the Udmurts and Mari. In the second half of the 13th century, Russian influx on Vyatka increased in connection with the Mongol-Tatar invasion.

Vyatka was first mentioned in chronicles in 1374. In the 1370s, this region became part of the Nizhny Novgorod principality. In 1393, the principality was annexed to the Duchy of Moscow.

The favorable geographical position contributed to the development of productive forces, the growth of agriculture, industry and trade. In the 16th century, this land was on the first places on the intensity of settlement and economic development.

More historical facts…

At the end of the 16th century, the Siberian Khanate ceased to exist and Vyatka lost the status of the borderland. It became a link between the Central, Volga and the Ural-Siberian regions of the Russian state.

During the reign of Boris Godunov, during the Time of Troubles, Vyatka for the first time was used as a place of exile. In the middle of the 17th century, Khlynov, with the population of about 4,400 people, was the largest town in the north-east of European Russia.

In 1719, the Vyatka province was founded as part of the Siberian gubernia. In 1727, the province became part of the Kazan gubernia. In 1780, Vyatka governorship with the center in Khlynov was formed. On this occasion the town received a new name - Vyatka. In 1796, Vyatka governorship was transformed into a province.

In the 19th century, the province remained a place of political exile. In the 1830-1850s, a lot of the Poles, who took part in the uprising of 1830-1831, were exiled to Vyatka. In 1835-1837, Alexander Herzen lived in Vyatka, which had a profound impact on the local social and cultural life. In 1848-1855, M.E. Saltykov-Shchedrin was in exile here.

In 1934, Vyatka was renamed Kirov in honor of Sergei Kirov, a Russian revolutionary, Soviet statesman and political figure who was killed on December 1, 1934. During the Second World War, more than 600,000 residents of Kirov Oblast served in the Red Army, 257,900 of them were killed.

Storm Lilian forces flights to stay grounded as 80mph winds hit major UK airport

British Airways scrapped a number of international and domestic flights at Heathrow Airport ahead of the Bank Holiday, including journeys to Paris, Rome and Basel

Heathrow Airport is busy today despite the cancelled flights

  • 08:25, 23 Aug 2024
  • Updated 10:20, 23 Aug 2024

Passengers have been hit with travel chaos after British Airways cancelled flights at Heathrow Airport amid Storm Lilian and its 80mph winds.

The airline has cancelled a number of international and domestic flights at the major London hub ahead of the Bank Holiday. They include flights to Barcelona, Rome and Paris. Other departures are delayed today, including a flight for Munich.

A British Airways spokesperson told The Mirror: "Due to restrictions imposed by Air Traffic Control at Heathrow Airport as a result of forecast adverse weather tomorrow, we’ve made some minor adjustments to our schedule.

"We’ve apologised to our customers for the disruption to their travel plans and our teams are working to get them to their destinations as quickly as possible." The Mirror has contacted BA for further detail.

Queues have also been spotted forming at Manchester Airport as stormy weather continues to wreak havoc. Three weather warnings have been issued by the Met Office , and concern wind for most of northern England and rain for two regions of Scotland.

Most Heathrow Airport flights are running as planned, but there have been some cancellations into and out of the travel hub due to Storm Lilian. The British Airways 10.30am flight from Edinburgh has been grounded, as has the 10.40am from Paris.

A spokesperson for the airport said: "Due to the regulations put in place by NATS because of strong winds earlier this morning to keep passengers and colleagues safe there has been a very small number of schedule changes, but the airlines will be communicating to impacted passengers directly about alternative travel arrangements. Advise to passengers travelling today hasn’t changed and they can expect a smooth journey through Heathrow."

Departure and arrival boards for Gatwick Airport shows dozens of flights are delayed flying into and out of the West Sussex airport, but none by more than an hour, with no cancellations yet this morning.

Bank Holiday travellers have also been struck with chaos on major motorways this morning. A number of roads have been blocked in Greater Manchester this morning with Metrolink lines suspended amid strong winds brought by Storm Lilian.

Drivers have been warned to take extra care on the roads this morning, with an issue already reported on the M6 motorway. A tree has fallen across the carriageway on the northbound side between J19 and J20, near the exit for the M56.

Warning campers at Leeds Festival, Mr Dewhurst added: "The wind will pick up in that area through the night, particularly strongest towards dawn and then first thing in the morning, before then easing through the morning.

"So there could be potentially some impacts from those strong winds, of 50 to 60mph in the area so it's worth making sure your tents are secured. There could also be disruption first thing to the transport networks for those travelling first thing."

Lillian's influence would "wane" by Friday afternoon as it reduced in intensity and pushed off into the North Sea, with scattered showers for most of the rest of the day, Mr Dixon said.

After the possibility of some heavy showers early on Saturday, settled conditions were likely to develop across southern and eastern England and Wales with sunny spells and dry conditions mixed with the odd chance of scattered showers.

The North and North West would continue to see "a fairly unsettled weekend", with various fronts moving in and bringing more persistent rain, particularly for parts of western Scotland and Northern Ireland, the forecaster said. Temperatures will reach highs of 21C on Saturday and Sunday and 23C on Monday in the South East, slightly below average for the time of year.

Self-driving shuttles trialled at airport

Those behind the scheme hope it will enhance accessibility, reduce passenger travel times and significantly decrease CO2 emissions, contributing towards Scotland's net-zero goals.

Two driverless passenger shuttle vehicles have hit the road as part of a pilot project in the Scottish Highlands.

A four-seater Aurrigo Auto-Pod and larger 10-seater Aurrigo Auto-Shuttle have been launched to help improve the connection between Inverness Airport and the nearby railway station.

Currently, passengers have to walk the whole 1.2km route between the terminal and train station or take the shuttle bus, for which there is a charge without the Go-Hi app.

During the trial, the auto-pod will cover about 750m of the journey.

The larger vehicle will also be used to offer transport around the University of the Highlands and Islands Inverness campus.

The pilot is scheduled to run until 30 August.

During the trial, only two people will be carried in the pod as a safety operator will be stationed in the front seats.

The shuttle will carry eight people, with a safety team of two in the front cab.

The project aims to gauge public perception surrounding autonomous vehicle technology and will assess the feasibility of introducing an on-demand, low-cost connected and autonomous vehicle (CAV) service to the region.

Professor David Keene, CEO of Aurrigo, said: "The aviation industry as a whole offers countless opportunities for this innovative technology to enhance operations, improve safety, and transform the passenger experience."

Project partners include the University of Glasgow, Highlands and Islands Transport Partnership (HITRANS), Aurrigo International plc, Stagecoach North Scotland, and Darwin Innovation Group Ltd.

It has been funded through Innovate UK and the Centre for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles.

Ranald Robertson, HITRANS director, said the project will help improve understanding of what passenger transport might look like in the Highlands and Islands in the future.

He added: "The trial will test two different types of driverless shuttle with both operations providing a real test of what this technology can offer both at Inverness Airport and Inverness Campus."
