Experience Your Best Israel Vacation

For many travelers, a trip to Israel is a lifelong dream come true. Use Orbitz.com to book flights and accommodations to begin the trip of a lifetime.

Israel and the adjacent Palestinian territories offer many opportunities for travelers. Long thought to be an off-limits area to tourist because of decades of violence, millions of intrepid travelers visit Israel each year, hailing from all walks of life and cultural backgrounds. From lovely beaches to ancient ruins and holy areas, Israel and Palestine beckon.

Best time to take a trip to Israel

Mediterranean-influenced Israel offers climates that range from subtropical in northern and coastal areas to arid and dry in the southern and eastern regions of the country. Israel experiences a rainy season from October through May. A few higher peaks in Israel, such as the Golan Heights, experience some snow in the winter, but much of the country relies only on rain for its moisture. Temperatures range from 40 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit during the rainy season and from 65 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit during desert summers. Many travelers visit Israel during Jewish and Christian holiday seasons, which can lead to higher fares and rates due to lesser availability. Great deals can be found through Orbitz.com during nonholiday periods.

Shalom - meaning peace

Welcome to Israel—a land of contrasts and wonderful surprises. Join hundreds of years of voyagers who have flocked to this dynamic country. Ancient and modern, secular and sacred, Israel beckons visitors with its magnificent sites, holy places and warm Mediterranean climate. Here, age-old sacred shrines exist alongside futuristic skyscrapers and posh resorts with swaying palms alongside desert wasteland. No matter where you look, the legendary stories of mankind’s collective history come to life in this magnificent place.

Destination Must-See's

Israel ms1

Dome of the Rock:

This structure dominates the old city. It is the shrine for Islam’s third most holy site. It covers a black stone in the mountain where Muhammad is said to have ascended to heaven. It was the first dome shrine to be built and is a masterpiece of Islamic architecture. It’s made of wood with marble slabs inside and covered with Persian tiles on the outside.

Israel ms2

Known in the bible as Sea of the Arabah or Salt Sea, it gets its name from the high mineral content preventing anything from living in it. The lowest point of dry land on earth is the shoreline of the Dead Sea. Nearly 7 million tons of water evaporate from it every day, but the minerals remain.

Israel ms3

Dead Sea Scrolls:

The first seven of many Dead Sea Scrolls were found by 3 brothers while gathering their goats high in the mountains. The brothers were not aware of what they found and sold the scripts. Years later, all scripts made their way to one location where the full content was finally revealed. See the Shrine of the Book at the Israel Museum to view the scrolls on display.

This is the birth place of Jesus. Christians all over the world consider this a holy site, but it is also significant to Jews because it is the burial place of the matriarch Rachel and birth place of King David. Manger Square is the main focus during Christmas celebrations three times a year.

Destination Must-Do's

Israel md1

Explore Jerusalem:

This historic location plays a major part in the 3 monotheistic religions. The heart of Jerusalem is in the Old City. This section is surrounded by a wall divided into 4 quarters: Armenian, Christian, Jewish and Muslim. Inside are important holy sites of the 3 major religions. Jerusalem also has a New City as well that still captures the original charm of the city.

Israel md3

Sea of Galilee:

This is a mountainous region in Israel’s north that is divided into two parts. It is densely populated and has the largest variety of ethnic communities in Israel. Its natural beauty and landscapes make it a main tourist destination. However, it is also popular for its national antiquities parks, farming communities, nature reserves, Jewish holy sites, Christian holy sites, and the Jordan River. One of the best ways to experience Galilee is to take a boat ride on the Sea of Galilee.

Israel md2

Visit the Western Wall:

Located in Jerusalem's Old City, the Western Wall is one of the holiest Jewish sites in Israel. Also known as the Wailing Wall or the Kotel, this sacred place is visited by millions of pilgrims each year so that they may pray and reflect. It is the only intact remnants of the Second Temple of Jerusalem and dates back to 2nd century BCE.

Israel md4

Enjoy Tel Aviv:

Tel Aviv is Israel’s economic and cultural center and it’s referred to as the “city that never stops.” It is the country’s first modern Jewish city in Israel, but it still holds quite a bit of history. Visitors can find several important Christian sites there, but it’s also teeming with restaurants, shops, old courtyards, fishing ports and night clubs that attract tourists from all over.

Expert Advice

diana

As you prepare to explore Israel, enjoy a casual dress style and be sure to pack comfortable walking shoes. Please dress conservatively when visiting holy sites throughout the country; shorts and sleeveless shirts are not permitted when visiting churches and other religious sites.

Israel e2

You’re in for a treat as you explore the many delicious flavors of Israel. Israeli food is based off Middle Eastern and Turkish cuisine. Common ingredients include lentils, nuts, raw vegetables, lamb and beef. Common beverages include mint tea, mint lemonade, egg cream and fruit shakes. Coffee lovers will enjoy Israel's Turkish style cup of java with its sweet notes of cardamom and caramel.

Israel e3

In Israel, religious items make popular souvenirs; these are not too hard to find in the "Holy Land." Many travelers love to collect beautiful glass-made products, ceramics and silver in Israel. Olive wood carvings are extremely popular here. For those who love beautiful jewels and jewelry, Israel is one of the world's leading diamond manufacturing and trading centers.

The beautiful country of Israel experiences warm weather for most of the year, which provides great conditions for visiting the various stunning beaches. The country does experience varied seasons, with different regions experiencing different weather patterns. And partakes in many festivals, religious holidays, and events that take place throughout the year, which can affect what time of year is the best for you to visit. Some of the recommended months to visit Israel would be April through May and October through November when the weather is relatively mild with sunshine and blue skies. These months also tend to bring a few crowds and lower prices for accommodation and travel. When visiting Israel always be sure to check the calendar regarding major Jewish celebrations, holidays, and events which can quickly increase the crowds and prices in the country. As well as complete business shutdowns during these religious celebrations and no public transportation. For more information, check out: Best Time to Visit Israel

We recommend 7-10 days based on what you want to see and do. We offer flexible vacation packages so you can select your number of nights in each city, desired hotel and activities. We suggest a minimum of 3 nights in larger cities.

By Car: Renting a car while visiting Israel allows the opportunity to explore the countryside and different destinations at your own pace. Driving can allow you to cover a lot of ground in a short span of time. Having a car in the bigger cities like Tel Aviv and Jerusalem can be a hassle due to limited parking, busy rush hour traffic, and the fact that there are plenty of public transportation options. Traveling around the countryside areas of Galilee, Haifa, Golan, and Negev is great in your own car. The streets and highways are modern and well maintained with driving on the right-hand side of the road and signposts in English. By Train: There are trains run by Israel Railways connecting between major cities and along the coast to Ben Gurion Airport and up to Jerusalem. Trains are convenient and comfortable with a network of routes, timetables, and more can be found on www.rail.co.il. Trains do not run from the mid-Friday afternoon through till sundown on Saturday (Shabbat and Jewish holidays). By Bus: The main bus company in Israel is Egged which offers modern, comfortable, convenient, and inexpensive bus travel. Buses run from city to city and to the outskirts with day passes available. By Ferry: There are ferry services from Akko`s marina to Haifa port offered twice a day during the week and three times on Saturdays.

The official currency in Israel is the New Israeli Shekel (NIS). US Dollars are not accepted. You will need to exchange your dollars for Shekel upon arrival; there are ATM machines inside the arrivals hall at the airport. You can also exchange your money at the local banks and some hotels. For information on tipping in Tel Aviv please see our comprehensive guide. For more detailed information, consult our guide by clicking here Tipping in Israel .

The official language spoken in Israel is Modern Hebrew and the formal languages consist of Hebrew and Arabic. English is spoken and understood by most individuals in the service industry. We suggest you get a good English-Hebrew/Arabic Guidebook and familiarize yourself with common phrases such as hello, goodbye, please, thank you and numbers 1 - 10.

what to take on a travel to israel

Israel is a nation rich in cultural and religious diversity, with a wide range of activities and landscapes to explore. When packing for a trip to Israel, it's important to consider the varied climate and cultural differences. The essentials include valid travel documents, appropriate clothing for the weather and cultural sites, electronics, and personal care items.

- Valid passport, visa (if required), and travel insurance.

- Photocopies of important documents, both physical and digital.

- Appropriate clothing for religious sites, including modest attire that covers the shoulders, knees, and décolletage.

- Lightweight and breathable clothing for warm temperatures, such as shorts, t-shirts, skirts, and dresses.

- Layers for cooler evenings or higher altitudes, such as light jackets, cardigans, and sweaters.

- Water-resistant or waterproof clothing for winter trips, including a raincoat or umbrella.

- Comfortable walking shoes and hiking sandals for exploring various terrains.

- Sun protection, including sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses.

- Personal care items, such as toiletries, bug spray, and feminine hygiene products.

- Electronics and their chargers, such as a mobile phone, camera, and portable charger.

- A reusable water bottle, especially as tap water in Israel is generally safe to drink.

- A small day bag or backpack for carrying essentials during day trips and exploring cities.

What You'll Learn

Documentation, accessories.

quartzmountain

Israel is a Westernised country with a mix of conservative religious sites and trendy, cosmopolitan cities like Tel Aviv. So, it's important to pack accordingly, with a range of clothing that will allow you to respect local customs while also staying comfortable in the country's hot climate.

Spring and Summer

For the hotter months, pack light and airy clothing with breathable fabrics such as cotton, linen or lightweight blends. Loose-fitting shirts, shorts, skirts and dresses are ideal. Opt for light colours that reflect sunlight. You'll also want to bring swimwear for the beaches and a nice outfit or two for nights out. Don't forget to include a lightweight scarf or shawl, which can be used to cover your hair and shoulders when visiting religious sites.

Fall and Winter

During the colder months, layering is key. Pack lightweight sweaters for milder days and thicker, cosy sweaters for colder weather. Long pants, jeans and leggings are a good idea, as are waterproof jackets and rain boots. You'll still want to pack a hat and sunglasses, as the sun can be strong in Israel, even in winter.

Regardless of the season, it's recommended that you bring comfortable walking shoes or sandals, as well as a lightweight daypack or bag for carrying essentials during day trips and city exploration.

Religious Sites

When visiting religious sites, both men and women should ensure their shoulders and knees are covered. Men should wear long pants, while women should wear clothing that is at least knee-length, such as long skirts or pants. Women should also refrain from wearing sleeveless shirts or low necklines. A lightweight scarf or shawl is useful for covering the head and shoulders.

  • Israel has a casual dress culture, so you won't need to bring anything too fancy.
  • If you're blonde, you may want to consider dying your hair or wearing a scarf, as blonde travellers report standing out.
  • Don't bring an umbrella, as it rarely rains during the summer.
  • Pack versatile clothing to maximise space in your luggage and leave room for souvenirs.

When packing toiletries for your trip to Israel, it's a good idea to bring your familiar basics. You may not be able to find the same products that you use regularly, and you don't want to take any chances when it comes to hygiene.

Firstly, make sure you have the essentials: toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss. You should also bring hair products, including a brush or comb, and any other personal hygiene items, such as deodorant. If you wear contact lenses, remember to bring a lens case and solution, as well as a pair of glasses. If you plan to bring electrical styling tools, such as a hairdryer or straighteners, remember to pack the appropriate electrical converter.

You can buy toiletries in Israel, and most pharmacies stock a broad selection. However, it's always a good idea to be prepared, especially if you have specific products you like to use. If you're particular about your shampoo and conditioner, for example, you might want to bring your own. Other useful items include lip balm or moisturiser, sunscreen, body wash, and earplugs for sleeping. Remember to pack any feminine hygiene products you may need, as well as sanitary items such as shampoo and conditioner.

Lastly, don't forget to pack any prescription medications you require, as well as a small quantity of over-the-counter medications such as painkillers and antihistamines. It can be difficult and expensive to obtain these medications in Israel without a prescription.

When travelling to Israel, it is important to carry the correct documentation. Here is some advice for travellers:

Your passport is the most important document you will need when travelling to Israel. Make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months from the date you enter the country and check the expiry date. If your passport does not meet the requirements, you will need to renew it before your trip. It is also recommended to check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet all the necessary requirements.

Entry Cards

When entering Israel, visitors receive an entry card instead of an entry stamp in their passport. Keep this card with your passport until you leave, as it serves as evidence that you entered the country legally. You may need it, especially if you're crossing into the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT). If you are denied entry to Israel, your passport will be stamped with an entry stamp and two red lines drawn across it to show the refusal.

Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)

From 1st January 2025, all visitors to Israel will need to obtain an ETA before arrival. The ETA covers a visit of 90 days and costs 25 New Israeli Shekels. You can check your eligibility and apply for an ETA with the Israel Population and Immigration Authority.

Currently, you do not need a visa to enter Israel as a tourist. Visitors are given permission to stay for up to 3 months. However, starting from 1st January 2025, a visa or ETA will be required for tourist visits.

Vaccinations

Check the vaccinations and certificates you need at least 8 weeks before your trip. Visit TravelHealthPro's Israel guide and TravelHealthPro's Palestinian Territories guide for detailed information.

Currency Restrictions

When entering or exiting Israel, you must declare if you are carrying 50,000 shekels or more (or the equivalent) by air, or 12,000 shekels (or the equivalent) by land.

Travel Insurance

Ensure you have comprehensive travel insurance that includes medical evacuation. Most travel insurance packages do not cover mental health-related illnesses or care.

Other Documentation

  • It is recommended to carry proof of your identity, such as a national identity card or military ID with a photograph.
  • If you are a dual citizen, check with your nearest Israeli embassy if you need pre-approval to travel to Israel.
  • If you are a British national of Palestinian origin, you will need a Palestinian passport or travel document to leave Gaza or the West Bank.
  • Children aged 17 and under travelling alone or with only one parent should carry a letter from their parents or guardians confirming parental consent, accommodation plans, and contact details.

Are Cue Tests Accepted for Travel? Everything You Need to Know

When travelling to Israel, it is important to be mindful of the types of devices you bring with you. Here are some recommendations and considerations for devices to take on your trip:

Mobile Phones and Tablets:

Bringing your mobile phone is essential for staying connected and accessible during your travels. Ensure your device is unlocked so you can purchase a local SIM card upon arrival, as this will provide better rates than your domestic plan. Alternatively, you can consider purchasing a cheap mobile phone in Israel for local use. Tablets can also be useful for entertainment and accessing the internet during your trip.

Laptops and Other Electronics:

If you plan to work remotely or require a larger screen, consider bringing your laptop. Don't forget the appropriate chargers and power adapters! Israel uses European-style outlets, so a universal power adapter will be necessary unless your device is compatible with those outlets.

Israel is a photogenic country, so bringing a good camera is recommended. Consider a "bridge camera," which offers full manual controls and a great zoom lens in a compact body. Alternatively, your smartphone camera or a simple point-and-shoot camera may suffice if you don't want to invest in a dedicated camera.

Power Bank:

A portable power bank is a handy device to have, ensuring your phone or other electronics stay charged, especially if you plan to be out and about for long periods.

Two-Factor Authentication Devices:

If you plan to access sensitive information or use online services that require two-factor authentication, don't forget to bring the necessary devices or authenticators. This could include a physical security key, an authentication app on your phone, or other similar solutions.

Other Devices:

Depending on your specific needs, you may want to bring other devices such as e-readers, portable speakers, or even a small travel router if you want to ensure a secure internet connection.

Remember to keep your devices secure and be cautious when using public Wi-Fi networks. Additionally, be mindful of local laws and customs regarding the use of certain devices, such as drones, which may have restrictions in some areas.

Exploring Popular Canadian Travel Destinations in America

  • Sun protection: Pack a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses with UV protection, and sunscreen with a high SPF rating. These will shield you from the strong Israeli sun during the scorching summer months.
  • Beach essentials: Don't forget your swimsuit, a beach towel, a cover-up, flip-flops or sandals, and a beach bag to carry your sunscreen and water bottle.
  • Light layers: While the days are hot, the evenings can be breezy, especially near the coast and in higher-altitude areas like Jerusalem. Bring a light jacket, cardigan, or shawl that you can easily layer over your outfits.
  • Modest attire: Israel has many holy sites and religious areas. As a sign of respect, it is recommended to dress modestly when visiting these places. For women, this includes clothing that covers the shoulders, knees, and décolletage. A lightweight scarf or shawl can be useful to carry for this purpose.
  • Hiking gear: If you plan to go hiking, consider bringing hiking sandals or closed hiking shoes, a hat, and a small backpack for day trips.
  • Water-resistant clothing: Israel experiences rainfall during the fall and winter, so pack a raincoat or waterproof jacket, and water-resistant pants or a skirt.
  • Warm accessories: Include a scarf, hat, and gloves to protect yourself from the cold. Choose warm materials like wool or fleece.
  • Umbrella: Israel experiences surprise showers and rainy days, so don't forget to pack an umbrella.
  • Closed-toe shoes: Opt for closed-toe shoes with good traction, such as boots or sturdy shoes, to navigate wet and muddy streets.
  • Evening wear: If you plan to attend formal events or dine at upscale restaurants, bring dressier outfits or cocktail dresses.

Frequently asked questions.

It depends on the time of year you're visiting. Generally, you'll want to bring comfortable walking shoes, a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, a lightweight daypack or bag, and modest clothing to wear when visiting holy sites. In the spring and summer, pack light and airy clothing, swimsuits, and beach clothes. For fall and winter, bring water-resistant clothing and an umbrella.

Israel uses Type H power outlets with a voltage of 220V-240V and a frequency of 50Hz. Bring a universal adapter and power converter to ensure compatibility with your electronic devices. You may also want to bring a portable charger for your phone.

Make sure to bring your passport, visa (if required), and any other necessary travel documents. Keep them in a secure and easily accessible place. It's also a good idea to make copies of your important documents and keep them in a safe place.

Don't forget to bring local currency (Israeli Shekels) and credit or debit cards. You may also want to bring a small first aid kit with essentials like band-aids, pain relievers, and any other personal medications.

Update: Some offers mentioned below are no longer available. View the current offers here .

Israel packs a mighty punch into a country barely bigger than New Jersey. Its geographic and religious significance is well known, but many people would be surprised to learn that Israel also features an incredibly diverse climate, from the southern Negev deserts to the snow-capped mountains up north in the Golan Heights.

While Israel's borders have been closed to most travelers for over a year now, it's preparing to welcome back tourists who have been fully vaccinated from COVID-19 this summer. Between new normalized relations with the United Arab Emirates and recent route additions by American Airlines, Delta and United, the tiny nation will be easier to reach than ever .

International flights arrive and depart from Ben Gurion airport in Tel Aviv (TLV). If you've never been to Israel before, don't be surprised if your fellow passengers erupt in applause and song as they touch down in the Holy Land. You might even witness a few travelers stopping to kiss the ground as they exit the plane.

Today, we'll review the best ways to fly to Israel using points and miles.

Airlines that fly to Israel

As mentioned above, thanks to new diplomatic relations with the United Arab Emirates and recent route additions by the major U.S. airlines, getting to Israel is as easy as any other Middle Eastern destination. Previously, your options were mostly limited to a handful of nonstop flights or a stopover in Europe.

Star Alliance

  • Aegean flies from Athens (ATH) to Tel Aviv
  • Air Canada flies from Toronto (YYZ) to Tel Aviv
  • Air Canada flies from Montreal (YUL) to Tel Aviv seasonally
  • Air India flies from New Delhi (DEL) to Tel Aviv
  • Austrian flies from Vienna (VIE) to Tel Aviv
  • Brussels Airlines flies from Brussels (BRU) to Tel Aviv
  • Ethiopian Airlines flies from Addis Ababa (ADD) to Tel Aviv
  • LOT Polish flies from Warsaw (WAW) to Tel Aviv
  • Lufthansa flies from both Frankfurt (FRA) and Munich (MUC) to Tel Aviv
  • Swiss flies from Zurich (ZRH) to Tel Aviv
  • TAP Portugal flies from Lisbon (LIS) to Tel Aviv
  • Turkish flies from Istanbul (IST) to Tel Aviv
  • United flies from Newark (EWR), Chicago (ORD), San Francisco (SFO) and Washington D.C. (IAD) to Tel Aviv
  • American Airlines flies from New York-JFK to Tel Aviv
  • American Airlines flies from Miami (MIA) to Tel Aviv
  • American Airlines will begin flying from Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) to Tel Aviv later in 2021
  • British Airways flies from London-Heathrow (LHR) to Tel Aviv
  • Finnair flies from Helsinki (HEL) to Tel Aviv
  • Iberia flies from Madrid (MAD) to Tel Aviv
  • Royal Jordanian flies from Amman (AMM) to Tel Aviv

  • Aeroflot flies from Moscow (SVO) to Tel Aviv
  • Air France flies from Paris (CDG) to Tel Aviv
  • Delta flies from New York-JFK to Tel Aviv
  • KLM flies from Amsterdam (AMS) to Tel Aviv

Israeli flag carrier El Al is not a member of any major alliance, though there are ways to book these flights with miles. In addition to several other international destinations, El Al currently flies to the following cities from Tel Aviv:

  • New York-JFK
  • Newark (EWR)
  • Los Angeles (LAX)
  • Miami (MIA)
  • Chicago (ORD) starting later in 2021

Hopefully, it resumes service to cities like San Francisco (SFO) and Las Vegas (LAS) after the pandemic.

El Al is in the process of a much-needed fleet update, which includes taking delivery of modern 787 aircraft and retrofitting its aging 777s with new seats. If you end up redeeming miles for these flights, do your best to book the newer aircraft to avoid being disappointed.

Etihad isn't a part of a major alliance either but booking with miles is easy thanks to partnerships with airlines like American Airlines and Air Canada. Etihad also has several transfer partnerships that make it easy to earn miles. While it flies A321s with recliner seats on its Abu Dhabi (AUH) to Tel Aviv flights, it offers some of the best business and first-class seats in the world for the long-haul segments to and from the U.S. The airline's four U.S. destinations are Chicago, Los Angeles, New York-JFK and Washington Dulles.

Another option for those looking to fly in style is Emirates. The Dubai-based carrier operates a mix of A380s and 777s on its routes to the U.S. You'll then need to connect flydubai — Emirates' low-cost counterpart — for the almost four-hour onward flight to Tel Aviv.

Emirates normally flies to 12 U.S. airports, including Boston, Chicago, Dallas (DFW), Houston (IAH), Los Angeles, New York-JFK, San Francisco and Washington Dulles. The A380s feature onboard showers and bars , while a handful of 777-300ERs have fully enclosed first-class suites .

Star Alliance awards to Israel

Given the number of one-stop options to get to Israel, it's easier to focus on one alliance at a time and talk about which program in each alliance offers the best value.

Not only are there a solid five different Star Alliance loyalty programs for you to pick between, but they all partner with two or more transferable points currencies (Singapore even partners with all five). No matter what cards you have in your wallet, you should be able to find an option that works for you.

ANA jumps out as an obvious choice with the lowest mileage rates in every cabin. While this is often the case, there are two important caveats about booking with ANA you should know. The first is that for Star Alliance partner flights, you can only book round-trip awards. If you're traveling to Israel for vacation, you likely want to book a round-trip anyways, but the problem here comes if you can only find award space in one direction. Other programs give you the flexibility to mix and match one-way awards, where ANA doesn't.

The other caveat is that ANA, like many of the programs on this list, passes on fuel surcharges for partner awards . We'll look at some concrete numbers in a minute (the fuel surcharges should be almost identical whether you're booking through ANA or Aeroplan ), but this can really eat away at the value of your "free" award.

Avianca LifeMiles has recently climbed from relative obscurity to become a popular redemption option for many travelers. Not only does it partner with every transferable points program except for Chase, but Avianca frequently sells miles at attractive prices , making it very easy to top up your account.

Avianca also has a huge edge here in that it doesn't pass on fuel surcharges, meaning you can book a Lufthansa first class award for less than $100 out of pocket (though this generally won't be an option until a couple of weeks before departure ). You'll also get a break from mixed-cabin LifeMiles award tickets , as it'll "discount" any connecting flights in a lower class of service.

For example, the program's award chart suggests that a first-class flight from the U.S. to Israel should cost 105,000 miles each way. However, since there isn't a first-class cabin on the Frankfurt (FRA) to Tel Aviv (TLV) leg, Avianca will only charge you business class award rates for that portion of the flight.

travel deals israel

Of course, U.S.-based travelers would obviously prefer a nonstop flight if at all possible, and United offers multiple gateways for reaching Israel. The carrier even flies Polaris-equipped planes on some of these routes, though award space is nearly impossible to come by on this route. If you can find it, Avianca will only charge 78,000 miles each way.

United's new Polaris business class. Photo by Zach Honig.

That said, thanks to Aeroplan's new distance-based award charts , it could be a cheaper alternative for East Coast travelers looking to book partner-operated flights. As an added benefit, the program has eliminated fuel surcharges. In the past, you could have paid hundreds of dollars in fees for a premium cabin ticket from the U.S. to Israel, eating away at the value of your "free" award. You'll now pay a CA$39 ($29) per-person partner booking fee.

How to earn miles for a Star Alliance award

The best way to earn the above currencies would be to open cards that earn Amex, Capital One or Chase points, as these will transfer to many of the carriers' respective frequent flyer programs. A couple of great options include:

  • The Platinum Card® from American Express: New cardholders can enjoy a welcome bonus of 80,000 Membership Rewards points after using your new card to make $6,000 in purchases in your first six months of account opening. However, you could be targeted for a 100,000-point bonus through the CardMatch Tool (offer subject to change at any time).
  • Chase Sapphire Reserve: New cardholders can earn 60,000 Ultimate Rewards points after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening.
  • Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card: New cardholders can earn 75,000 bonus miles after you spend $4,000 on purchases within the first three months of account opening.

Oneworld awards to Israel

After years of not offering nonstop service to Israel, American now offers flights to Tel Aviv from three U.S. gateways. These flights can be booked through the AAdvantage program from 40,000 American miles in economy, 62,500 in premium economy or 70,000 in business. That said, finding saver-level business class award space on the nonstop routes is extremely difficult.

Alternatively, you could connect through Europe on a partner airline or book Royal Jordanian through Amman. You'll want to target flights operated by Iberia, as it has lower taxes than British Airways. Royal Jordanian is also a good choice, since it offers a more straightforward routing. The latter of these two flies 787s from both Chicago-O'Hare (ORD) and New York-JFK to Amman (AMM), and the connecting flight to Tel Aviv barely takes 45 minutes. One-way awards cost 40,000 miles in economy or 70,000 in business, and both Iberia and Royal Jordanian awards should appear on AA.com and the American app.

Unfortunately, the program only partners with Marriott Bonvoy when it comes to transferable rewards.

While you could use your transferable rewards to book through British Airways, this is the airline you should work the hardest to avoid to get to Israel, as taxes and fees on award tickets to/through London (LHR) can add up quickly. A one-way business class award from New York-JFK to Tel Aviv carries over $600 in surcharges.

travel deals israel

In addition, you won't want to book a connecting flight with British Airways thanks to its distance-based award chart, as it'll charge you individually for each flight segment.

How to earn miles for a Oneworld award

You can earn AAdvantage miles on American and Oneworld flights. But for a quick account boost, you can take advantage of current offers on a couple of the carrier's cobranded credit cards.

New cardholders of the Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite Mastercard® can earn a sign-up bonus of 75,000 bonus miles after spending $3,500 on purchases in the first four months of account opening, while opening the CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® Mastercard® can snag you a bonus of 65,000 American Airlines AAdvantage® bonus miles after spending $4,000 in purchases within the first 4 months of account opening.

The information for the CitiBusiness AAdvantage Platinum Card has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

SkyTeam awards to Israel

Since the two major SkyTeam loyalty programs — Delta SkyMiles and Air France/KLM Flying Blue — both use variable award pricing, it's tough to discuss them in general terms. The price you see on any given day is the price you get, for better or worse.

We're currently seeing plenty of award space on Delta's nonstop flight from New York-JFK to Tel Aviv from only 37,000 miles each way in economy. That said, in normal times, you could expect to pay 4x that amount for this flight, so it's often cheaper to book a connecting flight.

travel deals israel

If you want a seat in Delta One on the nonstop flight out of JFK, you'll need to save up for a while. These are the typical one-way award rates on this route:

travel deals israel

Meanwhile, partner business class flights can be booked from just 85,000 miles each way. Keep in mind that Delta recently added unofficial close-in mileage surcharges for close-in bookings .

travel deals israel

When Delta pricing gets this absurd, you should always take a look at Virgin Atlantic. Despite the recent devaluation , the carrier's Flying Club program can still be a good option for Delta-operated flights, as in many cases, you can book these flights for fewer miles than Delta will charge, and Virgin Atlantic itself offers service to Tel Aviv through its London-Heathrow hub. One-way tickets for as little as 19,000 miles in economy look like a downright steal.

travel deals israel

How to earn miles for a SkyTeam award

Virgin Atlantic is a 1:1 transfer partner of Amex Membership Rewards, Chase Ultimate Rewards and Citi ThankYou Rewards, giving you many ways to boost your Flying Club balance from cards like the American Express® Gold Card and Chase Sapphire Preferred Card.

El Al awards to Israel

El Al is no longer a transfer partner of Amex Membership Rewards, but that's not a problem because its Matmid loyalty program is a poor value anyway. While El Al isn't a member of the Oneworld alliance, it partners with the Australia-based carrier, allowing Qantas Frequent Flyer members to earn and redeem points.

Awards are priced using a distance-based chart:

travel deals israel

The sweet spot here would be Newark (EWR) to Tel Aviv, which clocks in at about 5,700 flight miles. One way awards cost 37,800 Qantas miles in economy or 90,800 in business class. Once El Al launches its ~6,100-mile route to Chicago, you'll be able to book it for 45,000 Qantas points in economy or 104,500 in business class. Not a bad deal, especially for a nonstop flight.

Fortunately, you can use ExpertFlyer to search for El Al awards. While inventory isn't wide open, it's definitely there if you can be a bit flexible with your dates.

How to earn miles for an El Al award

If you want to fly on one of El Al's shiny new Dreamliners and enjoy a nonstop flight from the US to Israel, consider transferring American Express Membership Rewards , Capital One Miles or Citi ThankYou Points to Qantas.

Etihad awards to Israel

As mentioned above, Etihad isn't a part of a major alliance, but it's still easy to book with points and miles. Awards through the Etihad Guest program price out differently depending on city pairs and award buckets can easily cost over 200,000 miles round-trip in coach .

A much more attractive option would be to book Etihad awards through American Airlines AAdvantage. Plus, Etihad flights can be booked online via AA's site. The program will charge you the following round-trip:

  • Economy: 80,000 miles
  • Business: 140,000 miles
  • First: 230,000 miles

Meanwhile, here are the rates if you were to book through Air Canada Aeroplan:

  • Economy: 80,000-100,000 miles
  • Business: 140,000-170,000 miles
  • First: 200,000-240,000 miles

How to earn miles for an Etihad award

Etihad partners with American Airlines and Air Canada. American is a Marriott Bonvoy transfer partner. You can transfer Air Canada miles from Amex Membership Rewards , Capital One and Marriott. Etihad's own Etihad Guest mileage program is also a transfer partner of Amex Membership Rewards, Citi ThankYou Rewards , Capital One and Marriott .

Emirates awards to Israel

Since the Emirates itineraries include flights operated by flydubai, the only way to book these awards is through the Emirates Skywards program.

Unfortunately, Emirates currently doesn't let you book Emirates itineraries that connect to flydubai in a single award ticket — this is only possible for paid tickets. So, you'll need to book your long-haul segments on Emirates' website and then log in to your Skywards account via flydubai's website to book the other segments. That said, you may be able to check your bag through to your final destination.

Redemption rates will vary based on your origin. But to give you an idea, here are some sample round-trip rates between the U.S. and Dubai:

  • Economy: 125,000+ miles
  • Business: 200,000+ miles
  • First: 272,500+ miles

These tickets do incur fuel surcharges, but they were recently massively reduced .

You'll pay the following rates for the round-trip awards between Dubai and Tel Aviv:

  • Economy: 60,000+ miles
  • Business: 105,000+ miles

How to earn miles for an Emirates award

As you can see, these awards aren't cheap and are a bit more complicated to book. Instead, you might be better off booking these flights through the Chase Ultimate Rewards travel portal . You'll be able to book all your flights on a single ticket and potentially even save some points. As a quick refresher, Chase Sapphire Reserve, Chase Sapphire Preferred Card and Ink Business Preferred Credit Card cardholders can redeem points at a fixed 1.25- to 1.5-cent value. Plus, you'll earn frequent flyer miles and elite-qualifying credit.

travel deals israel

Emirates Skywards partners with all five major transferable points currencies: Chase Ultimate Rewards , Amex Membership Rewards , Citi ThankYou Rewards , Capital One Venture miles and Marriott Bonvoy .

Bottom line

Flying to Israel on points and miles requires a little more creativity than the rest of the Middle East, but there are a large number of one-stop options you can mix and match to get you there. The number of nonstop options to get there is growing as well. As always, once you've selected a routing and located award space, be sure to price compare between different loyalty programs before you transfer any points.

Canada raises travel advisory for Israel to 'avoid all travel' due to escalating violence

'the security situation can deteriorate further without warning,' department says.

Smoke rises over building located on a hill.

Social Sharing

Global Affairs Canada on Saturday urged Canadians to avoid all travel to Israel due to "the ongoing regional armed conflict and the unpredictable security situation."

The department's previous travel advisory for Israel only urged against non-essential travel.

The advisory now reads : "Avoid all travel due to the ongoing regional armed conflict and the unpredictable security situation. The security situation can deteriorate further without warning."

Fears of a wider regional conflict and all-out war between Israel and Iran have grown in the wake of recent actions between Israel and Hezbollah, a militant group based in neighbouring Lebanon and backed by the Iranian regime. Hezbollah is also allied with Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip.

Tensions grew after a Hezbollah commander was killed by an Israel airstrike in the Lebanese capital of Beirut on July 30. Israel alleges that the commander, Fuad Shukr, was behind a rocket strike three days earlier that killed 12 young people on a soccer field in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. Hezbollah has denied the allegation.

Fears of all-out Middle East war: How we got here

Just hours after Shukr's killing, the conflict spiralled further, this time in the heart of Iran itself. Ismail Haniyeh, the prominent political leader of Hamas, was killed in a targeted airstrike in the capital Tehran. Like Hezbollah, Hamas is also backed by Iran, which blamed Israel for the assassination. Israel refused to comment on it, but after the Oct. 7 attacks on southern Israel, the country said it would target Hamas leaders no matter where they were.

Israel and Hezbollah have been trading fire along the border since that day last year, when Hamas and other Palestinian militants led the attack into southern Israel that killed 1,200 people and saw some 250 others taken into Hamas-controlled Gaza, according to Israeli officials.

Israel's subsequent siege of Gaza has killed more than 39,550 people, according to the enclave's Health Ministry.

  • Hamas political chief Ismail Haniyeh killed in Tehran, Iran says
  • Israeli military says it killed Hezbollah commander in Beirut airstrike in response to Golan Heights attack

Hezbollah has vowed keep launching rockets at Israel until the latter ceases operations in Gaza.

"If the armed conflict intensifies, it could impact your ability to depart by commercial means. It may result in travel disruptions, including airspace closures and flight cancellations and diversions," Global Affairs Canada said.

The department has previously urged Canadians to avoid all travel to Lebanon for the same reasons.

Politics latest: Elon Musk criticised over 'delusional' comments about UK riots

Elon Musk has faced further criticism over his comments about the UK riots, this time from Tory leadership contender Tom Tugendhat. He described the billionaire's prediction that the UK was heading for "civil war" as "delusional".

Rishi Sunak's Rwanda scheme survived barely a day of the new Labour government, and the decision to scrap it while Channel crossings continue hasn't gone down well with Tory MPs.

One of the party's leadership contenders has suggested he'd present a similar idea to act as a "deterrent" to illegal migrants.

Mel Stride told a Daily Telegraph Q&A the previous scheme - which would have seen people who arrive in the UK illegally flown off to the African country - was already having an impact.

Migrants were 'waiting for Labour to scrap Rwanda'

Migrants were travelling from Northern Ireland into the Republic to avoid potential deportation, he said ( read more here ).

People were also "holding off coming over from Calais" because they were waiting for Labour to scrap the scheme, Mr Stride claimed.

Sky News asked Mr Stride's team whether he would bring back the Rwanda scheme specifically.

They refused to commit, instead referring to a "Rwanda-like deterrent".

The prime minister has cancelled his holiday as he remains on "high alert" for more potential unrest after the recent riots.

But the disorder does appear to have petered out, as perpetrators are sentenced across the country and after counter-protesters turned out in large numbers last week.

On the Sky News Daily, Niall Paterson speaks to Tawhid Islam, trustee at Liverpool Region Mosque Network, after the protests his community feared were overshadowed.

Plus, our people and communities correspondent Nick Martin on how swift justice may have deterred protesters and delivered a political victory for the new government.

Responding to a question from Sky News political correspondent Tamara Cohen , Tom Tugendhat emphasises hits out at those who try to impact British politics from abroad.

It's "unacceptable" for those outside the UK to try to influence the rule of law.

Mr Tugendhat points to his creation of the defending democracy taskforce while a government minister.

Later, he comments on Elon Musk's commentary on the UK riots and trolling of the prime minister, when he suggested the country was heading for "civil war".

The billionaire's remarks were "delusional", he says.

For more on his Tory leadership campaign speech, see our 14.26 post .

Former security minister Tom Tugendhat is giving his first big speech in his campaign to replace Rishi Sunak as leader of the Conservative Party.

He is speaking on the topic of law and order, and says politicians have "avoided being brutally honest about underlying social unrest".

His lists examples like the recent Southport stabbings and the murder of MP Sir David Amess by a "fanatical Islamist".

Mr Tugendhat attacks Nigel Farage for spreading false information about the Southport stabbings, and Home Office minister Jess Phillips for not condemning Muslim men who threatened a news crew during the unrest.

He accuses Sir Keir Starmer of a "failure of leadership" - and says the PM should have sacked Ms Phillips.

While rubbishing the claims of "two-tier policing", Mr Tugendhat does say public order policing "has been inconsistent and too often too weak", pointing towards pro-Palestine marches.

Analysis: Tories scramble to look tough on law and order

Our  correspondent Matthew Thompson  has been watching the campaign speech and says it's part of a "scramble" by each Tory leadership hopeful to "make themselves look as tough as possible".

Each recognises the need to appear strong on law and order given the recent riots.

Mr Tugendhat does have "form on this", given his past as a security minister.

But Matthew questions the promise of this being a "significant" speech.

It's well and good making "eloquent denunciations" of things that have gone wrong, he says, but "concrete policy" is harder to come by.

On this quiet day of summer recess in Westminster, we do at least have a live event to bring you.

Tory leadership hopeful Tom Tugendhat is giving the first speech of his campaign and the focus will be on law and order.

The former security minister is expected to talk plenty about the recent riots and the government's response to them.

You can watch the event below in the next 10 minutes or so, and we'll bring you the highlights in a separate post.

There are still 81 days left until the new Conservative leader is announced - and a new poll suggests the public aren't bothered.

Ipsos says 60% of people they asked do not care who Rishi Sunak's successor is.

While this number is inverted for 2024 Conservative voters, as you'd expect, supporters of Labour, Reform, and the Lib Dems are all apathetic.

There are already concerns about the new leader's ability to make a splash when they come to power, as the US general election is just three days after they will be crowned.

Keiran Pedley from Ipsos branded it "probably the most brutal polling for the Conservative I've seen from us".

In total, 1,141 people aged 18 to 75 were asked for their opinion between 2 August and 5 August.

If you're one of the 40%, we'll have coverage of Tom Tugendhat's first campaign speech shortly.

The other contenders are Kemi Badenoch, James Cleverly, Priti Patel, Mel Stride, and Robert Jenrick.

It's fair to say Elon Musk probably won't be on Sir Keir Starmer's Christmas card list this year.

The billionaire was a keen commentator on the recent riots in the UK, regularly trolling the prime minister on his controversial social media platform about accusations of "two-tier policing".

But Mr Musk does have at least have a former PM in his corner.

Liz Truss has criticised what she perceives as "attacks on free speech" in Britain and Europe and praised Musk for "standing up to these bullies".

Ms Truss is no longer an MP, after losing her seat at the election.

Musk's X under scrutiny

It comes after Sir Keir repeatedly warned social media firms about the role their platforms played in the riots.

The government has suggested it may look to bulk up legislation to ensure these companies crack down on harmful and illegal content.

And Mr Musk also received a warning from the EU ahead of a live conversation with Donald Trump broadcast on X last night.

Commissioner Thierry Breton had told Mr Musk to make sure the chat stayed within the bloc's digital services law, notably around amplifying harmful content.

Mr Musk responded by tweeting an insulting meme, while the Trump campaign told the EU to "mind their own business".

Health Secretary Wes Streeting has given further reaction to a damning report into the case of Valdo Calocane (see 10.43 post).

A Care Quality Commission review found Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust "minimised or omitted" key details of the risks Calocane posed to others.

Calocane - who has paranoid schizophrenia - fatally stabbed 19-year-old students Barnaby Webber and Grace O'Malley-Kumar before killing 65-year-old caretaker Ian Coates in June 2023.

Mr Streeting said the review made clear there were "multiple and fundamental failures on the part of the NHS".

'Shocking' decision to discharge

These covered Calocane's supervision, the provision of medication, what happened when he wasn't taking it, and - "shockingly" - the fact he was discharged for not attending appointments when non-attendance "should have provoked closer supervision".

Mr Streeting added he "can't imagine" the grief the families of the victims are going through "knowing that these deaths were preventable".

The Nottinghamshire trust was already working to make changes before the report was published, he said, and the NHS nationally is also ensure such cases are not repeated.

David Lammy, the foreign secretary, has spent much of his time in his new role trying to prevent further bloodshed in the Middle East.

With tensions high over a potential attack from Iran on Israel, the minister says the region is at a "critical moment".

Mr Lammy says he has spoken to Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati "about the need for all parties to urgently and immediately de-escalate".

We've been feeding off scraps in the Politics Hub today, so much so we might join you in taking a proper lunch break.

While you tuck into your sandwich, here's your midday bulletin:

  • Iran has rejected calls from the UK and its allies for a de-escalation in the Middle East, amid fears an attack on Israel is in the offing;
  • Sir Keir Starmer spoke to Iran's president last night to stress the need for "calm", but his intervention - along with those of the US, France, Italy, and Germany - hasn't gone down well in Tehran.
  • Tory leadership contender Tom Tugendhat will give his first speech of the campaign this afternoon , focusing on law and order after the recent riots;
  • We'll bring you coverage of the event from around 2.15pm .
  • The chancellor has said there's "more to do" to get people into work after new unemployment figures were released;
  • They showed a slight drop in the rate of unemployment , from 4.4% to 4.2%, which the Tories have said is evidence their economic plan was working.

That's all for now - we'll have Mr Tugendhat's campaign event for you later and whatever other political news comes our way.
