This tour was an excellent introduction to Croatia for us - with a good mix of the history of Croatia and its people, seeing beautiful gardens and the National Park. Sunday - Day 1 - Arrival in Rome

BENVENUTO! Welcome to Italy!

We will meet you at the airport and transfer you to your hotel. After checking into your hotel, you will have the rest of the day free to rest and explore Rome on your own.

 - Monday - Day 2 - Rome - (B)

In the morning, you will be picked up at your hotel for your comprehensive tour to visit the Vatican and its museums, as well as the Sistine Chapel the home of Michelangelo's Last Judgment.

After that, we will continue to visit St. Peters Square and Basilica, and will also visit the Coliseum and the Roman Forum.  ( This is a grand full-day tour,  comfortable clothing and shoes are recommended)

Breakfast at the hotel – Enjoy the rest of the day at leisure.

 - Wednesday - Day 4 - Rome to Florence - (B)

In the morning, we will meet you at your hotel and provide a transfer to Train station and depart from Rome on a 1-hour 30-minute train ride to Florence.

Upon arrival, you will be met at the train station and transferred to your hotel.

Enjoy the rest of the day at leisure.

Drive to panorama sight (slopes of Srdj mountain),  get amazing views, lots of photo opportunities,  then return to the old city and enjoy an introductory walking tour from your guide, Visit The Assumption Cathedral, then transfer back to your hotel or you can continue to enjoy rest day of the exploring Dubrovnik at your own pace.

 - Tuesday - Day 10 - Dubrovnik - (B)

Depart from Dubrovnik on an enjoyable scenic drive south,

Upon arrival enjoy exploring Kotor and medieval fishing villages,

Walls surrounding the city on the sea boasts attractive beaches and enjoy exploring more of the old part of the town.

After the tour will return to Dubrovnik.

Enjoy visiting the UNESCO-listed natural wonders of the Plitvice Lakes with their magnificent scenery, enjoy a boat cruise and ride the scenic tram along the lake shores.

Plitviče Lakes known for their 16 terraced lakes joining by waterfalls and limestone canyons. Scenic hiking trails along and across the creeks, by electric powered boat.

After visiting,  we will return to Split.

– Saturday - Day 14 – Split – Blue Caves - Hvar - Split - (B)

Breakfast at the hotel  - Meet up with the group guided tour to Blue Caves and Island hopping and visiting Hvar.

Best of the Dalmatian coast with this full-day tour,

Visit five islands, two caves

Visit Blue and Green Caves; explore beautiful Stiniva beach with a swimming stop at the Blue Lagoon. Then onto Devil's islands and Hvar town.

Visit Hvar with its 13th-century walls, a hilltop fortress, and the main square anchored by the Renaissance-era Hvar Cathedral. After the visit and free time,  return to the hotel.

- Sunday - Day 15 - Departure from Split to Athens - (B)

 - Monday  - Day 16 - Athens - (B)

After breakfast at around 8:30 AM, we will meet you at your hotel and continue on the guided tour of Athens.  Start with the Temple of Olympian Zeus, Panathinaiko Stadium (where the first Olympic Games took place in 1896). After that, we will drive by the Prime's Minister's residence, the Royal Palace, (guarded by colorful Evzones), Zappion (Conference and Exhibition Hall), National Garden, Hadrian's Arch, St. Paul's Church, Parliament, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Schliemann's House (Numismatic Museum), Catholic Cathedral, Academy, University, National Library, Old Parliament, Constitution Square, and the impressive Russian Orthodox Church.

At the ACROPOLIS, you will visit Propylaea, Temple of Athena Nike, Parthenon, Erechtheion, and the Museum of the Acropolis.

In the early afternoon, we will provide a transfer to your hotel, or we can drop you at the Plaka district if you like to wander and explore at your own pace. Overnight in Athens.

- Tuesday - Day 17 - Athens to Mykonos Island -

Very early in the morning, we will meet you at your Athens hotel take you to Piraeus ferry port. Depart from Athens

on a ferry ride to Mykonos Island.

Upon arrival, you will be met at the harbor and transferred to your hotel.

After checking in the hotel, enjoy the rest of the day at leisure.

- Wednesday - Day 18 - Free day to Explore Mykonos -  (B)

Today is free for you to explore Mykonos on your own.

 - Thursday - Day 19 - Mykonos to Santorini - (B)

In the morning, Depart from Mykonos on a scenic ferry ride to Santorini Island.

After arrival, you will check-in at your hotel.

After check-in, you will have a free day to relax and explore on your own.

Santorini is one of those iconic places that will be permanently etched in your mind. Everywhere you turn is a photo opportunity. Essentially, the island is what remains of an enormous volcanic eruption, which destroyed the earliest settlements on what was formerly a single island. The aftermath of the explosion created what you see today, a caldera. All of the whitewashed, charming houses cling to the high cliffs of the rim, while the deep blue Aegean Sea wraps around the geological masterpiece, hundreds of feet below. Its spectacular physical beauty, along with

its lively nightlife, your Santorini visit will be unforgettable.

Enjoy a boat trip to Volcano

11:00 am Meet up at the Athinios Harbor, depart on a scenic sail to Volcano,

Upon arrival have free time to explore and hike to the top of the volcano and have a glance on the active parts,

lots of fantastic photo opportunities of the volcano and from Volcano to the different angles of Magnificent Santorini Island.

Get back to the boat for a short sail to hot Springs (Palea Kameni) Enjoy swimming, then onto Thirassia where you can eat,

relax or swim and visit the traditional village of Manola.

After that, sail to back to the Island and enjoy a quick top at Armeni, then back to Athinios port.

The tour finish time will be around 17:30 pm. Enjoy the rest of the day and evening at leisure

- Monday  - Day 16 - Athens - (B)

Meet up at the lobby of your hotel ( meeting time to be determined)

Will start with a panoramic driving tour of Athens, with your guide and or driver guide, during the driving tour you will be seeing and learning about the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Greek Parliament building, and Presidential Palace, then s short photo stop at the Panathinaiko Stadium where the first Olympic Games took place in 1896,

Also on the way to Acropolis,  you will be pointed and learn about the Zappeion and Temple of Olympian Zeus, the University and, the Academy of Athens, National Garden, Hadrian’s Arch, St. Paul’s Church, Parliament, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Schliemann’s House (Numismatic Museum), Catholic Cathedral,  Old Parliament, Constitution Square, Russian Orthodox Church

We will then get off the vehicle, near the entrance of Acropolis then continue on visiting Propylae the gateway, Temple of Athena Nike, Parthenon, Erechtheion with its Porch of Maidens. the ancient citadel.

The last place of the tour will be the new Acropolis Museum where you will see the findings of the archaeological site of the Acropolis and every artifact found on the rock and on the surrounding slopes, from the Greek Bronze Age to Roman and Byzantine Greece.

After the tour,  we can take you back to your hotel

or we can drop you at the Plaka district if you like to wander and explore at your own pace.

- Tuesday - Day 17 - Athens to Mykonos Island - (B)

Very early in the morning, we will meet you at your Athens hotel take you to Piraeus ferry port. Depart from Athens on a ferry ride to Mykonos Island.

Upon arrival, you will be met at the harbor and transferred to your hotel.

After checking in the hotel, enjoy the rest of the day at leisure.

Overnight in Mykonos.

- Wednesday - Day 18 - Mykonos -  (B)

Breakfast at the hotel. 10:00 am Meet up at the harbor,  after a scenic 45 minute boat ride, enjoy a 4 hour to explore the sacred island of Delos,  aka the birthplace famous Apollo and Artemis

See the famous terrace of the Lions, enjoy a short and easy hike to Mount Kynthos....... 45 minute boat ride back to Mykonos and enjoy rest of the afternoon and evening at leisure.

- Thursday - Day 19 - Mykonos to Santorini - (B)

In the morning, Depart from Mykonos on a scenic ferry ride to Santorini Island.

After arrival, you will check-in at your hotel.

After check-in, you will have a free day to relax and explore on your own.

Santorini is one of those iconic places that will be permanently etched in your mind. Everywhere you turn is a photo opportunity. Essentially, the island is what remains of an enormous volcanic eruption, which destroyed the earliest settlements on what was formerly a single island. The aftermath of the explosion created what you see today, a caldera. All of the whitewashed, charming houses cling to the high cliffs of the rim, while the deep blue Aegean Sea wraps around the geological masterpiece, hundreds of feet below. Its spectacular physical beauty, along with its lively nightlife, your Santorini visit will be unforgettable.

- Friday - Day 20 - Exploring Santorini - (B)

Enjoy a boat trip to the Volcano

11:00 am Meet up at the Athinios Harbor, depart on a scenic sail to Volcano,

Upon arrival have free time to explore and hike to the top of the volcano and have a glance at the active parts, lots of fantastic photo opportunities of the volcano, and from Volcano to the different angles of Magnificent Santorini Island.

Get back to the boat for a short sail to hot Springs (Palea Kameni) Enjoy swimming, then onto Thirassia where you can eat, relax or swim and visit the traditional village of Manola.

After that, sail to back to the Island and enjoy a quick stop at Armeni, then back to Athinios port.

The tour finish time will be around 17:30 pm. Enjoy the rest of the day and evening at leisure

Overnight in Santorini. - Saturday - Day 21 - Santorini to Athens then to Istanbul - (B)

In the morning we will provide a transfer to Santorini Airport for your departure to Athens then onto Istanbul.

Unpack and go out for an evening walk and dinner on your own around Sultanahmet Square.

In the morning, we will meet you at your hotel and take you on this enlightening walking tour down to the waterfront near Eminonu.

You'll see hundreds of interesting shops lined up cozily side-by-side, We will then enjoy a cruise on the Bosphorus.

In the morning we will greet you at your hotel and take you on a guided tour of the historical old part of Istanbul.

Early in the morning we will meet you at your hotel and provide a transfer to Istanbul domestic

airport and put you on a short domestic flight to Izmir.

Upon arrival, we will take you on a guided tour of Ephesus, Temple of Artemis, and the House of Virgin Mary.

Our drive will take us through a rich agricultural area, teeming with cotton fields and fruit orchards.

Blessed with sunny climates, thousands of years of history, idyllic beaches, and the most delicious and fresh cuisine, both Italy and Greece are both fantastic choices for a Mediterranean vacation. This Italy and Greece itinerary is perfect for anyone that wants to explore both countries.

It can be so difficult to choose one over the other!

On an Italy trip , you can explore a Seventh Wonder of the World, sail on mountain lakes, and see world-famous artworks like Michelangelo’s David. In Greece , you can island-hop in the Cyclades, stroll through white-washed cobblestone villages, and witness Greece’s ancient history at the Acropolis.

We’ve been lucky enough to visit both Italy and Greece. They are both incredible countries that I love. I’ve been getting a lot of questions recently about combining a trip to Greece and Italy. If you’ve got enough time to explore both destinations, I say go for it!

I would recommend allotting at least 10 days to each country. I’ve written this Italy and Greece itinerary to help you decide where to go, but if you’d like a more detailed Italy and Greece Trip Itinerary, I recommend downloading our combo guide written by myself and Kids are a Trip .

Should I go to Italy or Greece?

Both countries have similarities but they offer totally different cultural experiences. So, if you have the time, why not travel to Italy and Greece?!

Combining visits to both countries into a three-week vacation package will result in the most life-changing, memorable trip.

Following a three-week Italy and Greece itinerary also makes sense on a practical level. They’re both Mediterranean countries separated only by the Adriatic Sea, so there are lots of flight, ferry, cruise, and sightseeing tour travel options.

You won’t have to pack for two completely different sets of climates, either. Both countries boast dry and sunny weather for most of the year.

As you digest this three-week Italy and Greece itinerary and learn all the cool things to do in both places, you’ll realize that you simply cannot miss out on any of these amazing experiences.

Best Time to Visit Italy and Greece

The best time to visit both Greece and Italy is in the shoulder season from April – June and September – October. Italy’s and Greece’s warm climate ensures you will still be able to enjoy all the outdoor activities that you can do in summer while avoiding the intense, often dangerous heat of midsummer as well as the crowds and high prices.

Getting Between Italy and Greece

Unless you enjoy long bus rides or hauling your luggage between train connections, the best way to travel from Italy to Greece is either by flying or taking the ferry.

A local specialist in traveling throughout this region will probably tell you that flying is way faster and cheaper. But you might be in the mood (and have the time) for an epic sailing adventure! Either way, you have lots of options.

Fly between Greece and Italy

Thanks to Europe’s several budget/low-cost airlines, you could get round-trip flights booked from Italy to Greece for less than $40! In peak season, you can still find tickets for less than $100 if you book ahead.

Check out airlines like Jet2, Easyjet, and Ryanair for the best deals. Aegean Airlines, ITA, and Volotea also fly between Italy and Greece so it’s worth checking those too.

Ferry from Greece and Italy

The ferry schedule between Venice (where the Italy portion of this itinerary ends) and Athens (where the Greece section begins) is fairly limited. There are only four sailings a week and single tickets start from $250+ per person.

Oh, the journey time for this ferry ride is approximately 33 hours.

So no, you’re probably not going to sail from Italy to Greece or from Greece to Italy, but it’s an option if you have a big pile of books you want to read sitting on your nightstand. You also don’t need to rent a car to follow this itinerary so there’s no reason why you would have to take a ferry.

What’s the Best Way to Visit Greece and Italy in One Trip?

There are several ways to organize your Greece and Italy itinerary and each of them is great for different reasons. You should choose the option that best fits your needs. Take into consideration budget, mobility, time, and style of travel. For example, if you get very sea sick and don’t like being able to be on your own schedule, then a cruise might not be the best option for you.

If you don’t like to be around a lot of people, a tour might not be a good idea fit either. But if you’re traveling solo and you don’t feel comfortable planning and running your own trip, a do-it-yourself option may not be a good choice for you. I’ll lay out the pros and cons of each option below.

Cost Analysis of Italy and Greece Trip Options

There are several great cruise options. If you’re on a budget, this 16-day cruise is only $3,200 USD and hits so many incredible places in both countries.

• Accommodations and most food is taken care of for you
• Chances to make friends for solo travelers
• You get to see a lot of ocean

Cons of taking an Italy and Greece Cruise

• Not great if you get seasick
• Can be expensive
• You don’t get to see a lot of the interior of each country
• You’re only in each location for a short time

Do it Yourself Italy and Greece Itinerary

If you don’t think a tour or cruise will be a good option for you, then a DIY Italy and Greece Itinerary is probably going to be the best fit.

This is a detailed, day-by-day itinerary for exploring Italy and Greece over three weeks. If you’re based in the US, there tend to be more direct flights to Italy than Greece and they’re often more affordable.

However, you might personally find it more convenient and cheaper to fly to Greece. Feel free to book round-trip flights to one city in Italy or Greece or fly into one country and out of the other. It all depends on what works for your schedule, vacation time, and the deals you can find.

Visiting all of the iconic cities and resort towns in Italy would take months if not years! This 10-day Italy itinerary is the perfect balance between bustling cities and picturesque countryside.

You’ll visit the capital city of ancient Rome, the floating city of Venice, and Florence as well as the regions of the Amalfi Coast, Cinque Terre, and the northern lakes.

Day 1: Arrive in Rome

If you’re flying from the continental US, Rome is around nine hours ahead to six hours ahead. Excluding early morning departures, this itinerary works for anyone arriving in Rome on a red-eye flight or the day before.

Without delay, welcome to the Eternal City! Rome is Italy’s bustling ancient capital and the best place to begin a first-time Italian adventure.

After breakfast, spend your first morning on a Vespa or walking tour to see the highlights and orientate yourself in this sprawling city. Here are some of the top sights you can expect to see on a guided tour of modern and ancient Rome:

On your first free evening, head across the River Tiber to the cool Trastevere neighborhood.

Day 2: Rome

It’s only possible to snap photos of the Trevi Fountain without the crowds if you visit very early in the morning. If you’d rather sleep in, after breakfast, spend your morning in Vatican City.

Don’t miss St. Peter’s Basilica, the largest church in the world, and the Vatican Museums, home of the Sistine Chapel. Book a tour of the Vatican Museums so you don’t have to wait in a long line.

After visiting Vatican City, book a cooking class so you can learn how to make more authentic meals in contrast to the Italian dishes you’re probably used to making at home! And it goes without saying, but you should be eating as much homemade gelato in Rome as you can too.

Walk off all those delicious plates of Roman pasta and desserts in Villa Borghese before spending the evening in the Jewish Quarter.

Day 3: Amalfi Coast

It’s time to leave Rome and head south to the Amalfi Coast . This UNESCO-listed region offers charming hillside villages, calm waters, and beautiful white sands.

It takes around three and a half hours to travel there via Naples on the train , so set off early.

Here are some fun things to do during your free day on the Amalfi Coast:

Spend the night on the Amalfi Coast .

Day 4: Florence

Now, it’s time to visit the City of the Renaissance! Florence is the capital of Tuscany and a must for history lovers and culture vultures.

Take the train to Florence from the Amalfi Coast via Naples in the morning and arrive by early afternoon. Here are some of the best things you can do on your free afternoon in Naples:

• Climb the Dome of Florence’s Duomo
• Baptistry of St. John at the Duomo
• Walk Across Ponte Vecchio
• Michelangelo’s David at the Accademia Gallery
• Uffizi Gallery
• Piazzale Michelangelo for views
• Basilica of Santa Croce

Spend the night in Florence.

Day 5: Florence and Pisa

On your final morning in Florence, you may want to check out some of the top attractions you didn’t get around to visiting the day before.

Accademia Gallery, for example, usually opens at 8:15 am. This is a great time to see the Statue of David as it’s usually packed out!

The train from Florence to Pisa takes less than an hour and it’s en route to the colorful, coastal Cinque Terre villages so it’s the perfect stopover. Spend a few hours here taking Instagrammable photos of the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa and the Cathedral before hopping back on the train to head north.

Ideal towns to stay in on Cinque Terre for this itinerary are Monterosso al Mare or the nearby city of Levanto.

Day 6: Cinque Terre

Start off your full day in Cinque Terre in the picturesque village of Monterosso al Mare. This is the northernmost town of the five lands that make up Cinque Terre. The other four, from north to south, are Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore.

There are three ways you can explore Cinque Terre:

• By train – Purchase a Cinque Terre rail pass at any station to visit all five villages
• By ferry – Head to the dock for a day pass but note they don’t stop at Corniglia
• By foot – The Blue Trail connects all five villages but parts are often closed for maintenance

Exploring by train is the quickest and most efficient way to see all five villages. Enjoy the epic viewpoints, gelato, seafood, and watching the sunset from any of the Cinque Terre towns.

Day 7: Milan and Lake Como

Wake up bright and early to take the train from Cinque Terre. Plan to arrive in Milan early afternoon for a short stopover.

Here are some things you can see in Milan during your afternoon there:

• Milan’s Duomo Rooftop
• The Last Supper Painting by Da Vinci
• Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II

Head to the town of Bellagio on the banks of Lake Como where you’ll spend the night. You can take a train to Como and then a bus, but you might prefer to hire a driver for convenience.

Day 8: Lake Como

There’s only one way to spend your free day in Lake Como : sailing on the lake and exploring charming lakeside villages!

You have three sailing options:

• Catch a round-trip ferry
• Book a private boat tour
• Rent a boat

Spend the day stopping off at as many beautiful villages as you can and seeing incredible villas. Here is some inspiration:

• Town of Varenna
• Town of Menaggio
• Villa Balbianello in Lenno
• Villa Melzi in Bellagio
• Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo

Spend a second night in Bellagio.

Day 9: Venice

It’s time to explore the romantic, floating city of Venice! Book a driver for your return trip to Milan and take the train to Venice.

The first thing you should do is take a gondola ride along the Grand Canal and down the waterways that run beside Venice’s narrow streets. You’ll be able to see lots of churches, city squares, and bridges from the viewpoint that Venice is meant to be seen.

Spend your free evening eating cicchetti (Venitian tapas) and if you’re in the mood for after-dinner drinks, head to Harry’s Bar where Hemingway once frequented.

Day 10: Venice

After breakfast, spend your last day in Italy seeing as many of Venice’s top sights as you can. Be an early bird to avoid the cruise ship crowds! Here are some suggestions:

• St. Mark’s Square and Basilica
• Doge’s Palace
• Rialto Bridge and Market
• Peggy Guggenheim Collection
• St Mark’s Campanile
• Bridge of Sighs
• Libreria Acqua Alta
• Islands of Murano, Burano, and Torcello

Depending on your travel plans, either fly out to Athens tonight or enjoy your last night in Venice.

After spending over a week on a sightseeing tour of Italy doing what the Romans do, it’s time to explore the island nation of Greece. This 10-day itinerary offers heaped helpings of ancient history with a side dish of wonderful beaches and glistening turquoise waters on the Greek Islands.

You’ll visit the ancient city of Athens on mainland Greece before venturing on an island-hopping Greece tour of Crete and two islands in the Cyclades, Santorini and Naxos.

Day 11: Arrive in Athens

Welcome to Greece and its capital city, Athens! Note that Greece is one hour ahead of Italy.

Depending on what time to arrive, you may be able to start exploring Ancient Athens today. Look at the list of things to do on tomorrow’s date as there are endless things to do here to fill your time.

Day 12: Athens

Continue exploring Athens and all of its spectacular ancient sites, some of which are thousands of years old. Here are all of the sites you can visit just within the Acropolis Hill area:

• The Parthenon
• Odeon of Herodes Atticus
• Monument of Agrippa
• Temple of Nike Athena
• Porch of the Caryatids at the Erechtheion
• Old Temple of Athena Polias
• Olive Tree of the Pandroseion

Spend the rest of your day exploring the Acropolis Museum, which has an on-site restaurant, and the Ancient Agora of Athens.

Day 13: Chania, Crete

Take a flight out to Chania airport on Crete, the first of the three Greek Islands you’ll visit on this trip, to start your island-hopping adventure.

Once you arrive in Crete, here are some things you can do in Chania or nearby:

• Samariá Gorge
• Elafonisi Beach
• Adkadi Monastery
• Balos Lagoon

Spend the evening wandering through the old port of Chania. Don’t miss out on tasting local cheeses served with olives and herbs, typically freshly prepared.

Day 14: Chania, Crete

There are tons more places to explore on your full day in Chania. Start your day wandering around Old Chania Market, which is also known as the Agora. You can buy lots of local fresh produce or souvenirs here.

Next, take a day trip to Falassarna Beach which is only an hour’s drive away.

When you get back, check out the Minoan Ruins of Chania and the Church of Agios Nikolaos before enjoying a relaxing evening.

Day 15: Eastern Crete

Who’s ready for a mini road trip?! Rent a car or book a driver and head to Eastern Crete making some stops along the way:

• Stop 1 – Fortezza in Rethymno
• Stop 2 – Rimondi Fountain
• Stop 3 – Neratze Mosque
• Stop 4 – Archaeological Museum of Rethymnon
• Stop 5 – Porta Guora

Stay near the towns of Malia or Elounda.

Day 16: Spinalonga or Heraklion

You have a free day to do whatever you please! Hang out at your resort, book a day trip with a tour director who is a local specialist in Crete, or explore independently with a rental car. Here are some great choices of what to do with your day:

Option 1: Palace of Knossos and Heraklion Archaeological Museum

Option 2: Island of Spinalonga

You can either catch a ferry to Spinalonga or book a sightseeing tour extension online or through your hotel.

Day 17: Santorini

The white-washed island of Santorini is a must-visit on any first trip to Greece. Head to the ferry terminal and hop on a boat to Athinios Port.

Some of the best places to stay in Santorini are Oia, Imerovigli, and Fira.

Spend your first day relaxing on one of the wonderful beaches on this island before enjoying a sunset boat ride. You’ll get the best view of the Oia windmills!

Day 18: Santorini

To make the most of your day in Santorini, book a sightseeing tour of the island’s highlights. Here are some of the hotspots you should aim to see on a day tour:

Our owners Lori and Kem recently returned from the trip of a lifetime, spending two weeks in Italy, Montenegro, Greece, and Croatia. Their favorite stop of the trip was their last one: Dubrovnik, Croatia. Check out our “Photo of the Week” feature on Dubrovnik for more details on what they loved about the charming city. They traveled with three other couples, and spent much of their time exploring, eating, and taking in what these beautiful destinations have to offer. Read below for where they stayed, which restaurants they tried, and more.

Part 1: Italy: Tuscany, Cinque Terre, & Venice

Kem and Lori began their trip in Florence with one other couple. They made plans to meet up with the rest of their group in Venice a few days later. The other two couples decided to explore Rome, Naples, and the Amalfi Coast. Florence is a city full of Renaissance architecture, monuments, statues, art galleries, and museums. Beyond the art and history scene, you’ll find amazing restaurants and quirky shops. While there, the group explored the piazza del Duomo . “The Dome” is a symbol of Florence and offers amazing panoramic views of the city from the top.

The group also spent some time in the Galleria dell’Accademia , home to Michelangelo’s infamous marble David.

The group’s favorite restaurant in Florence was  Buca San Giovanni, which serves authentic Tuscan food in the heart of Florence’s historical district.

They stayed two nights at the Grand Hotel Baglioni , which is just blocks from the Duomo and other must-see sites. In addition, it is very centrally located: it is close to the train station which makes it very convenient for travel to and from many other cities and sites in Italy.

Just over an hour drive from Florence, the group stopped in Siena to see the  Siena Cathedral . Then it was on to Chianti, which is home to the rolling hills and vineyards that you’ll associate with Tuscany.

The group spent a day at the Poggio Amorelli estate and winery . Here they had a guided tour through the vineyards, the winery and cellar, then it was time for wine tasting! The tasting included red and white wines grown entirely on the estate, and was accompanied by Tuscan salami and aged cheeses.

The final stop in Tuscany was in San Gimignano, where the group took in the history, medieval streetscapes, and enchanting rural setting.

Cinque Terre

Next stop was Cinque Terre. The five towns that make up Cinque Terre are recognizable in pictures with their multi-colored buildings built right into the cliffs overlooking the sea. They stayed in Monterosso al Mare, the largest of the five towns. Monterosso has a beautiful beach and tons of amazing restaurants. While here, they hiked from Monterosso to Vernazza. You can hike between all of the villages in order to see all five if you wish! You could also take a boat ride between the towns, or a very quick train.

The whole group met up in Venice, where they spent two nights before boarding the Norwegian Star.

Here they stayed at the  Hotel Principe  directly on the Grand Canal and about a block from the train.

Their favorite restaurant in Venice was  Al Buso,  located directly beneath and adjacent to Rialto Bridge. The location is only half of the allure, as the food is top notch as well.

While there, they spent time at St. Mark’s Square, home to St. Mark’s Basilica which is recognizable from its beautiful dome. They also walked over the Rialto Bridge, where they took time to explore the shops and get the best view of the city.

Part 2: Norwegian Star cruising from Venice to Croatia, with stops throughout Greece

Part two of this amazing trip was seven days on the Norwegian Star , cruising from Venice to Dubrovnik. This was their favorite part of the trip, stopping in Montenegro, then throughout Greece, and finally to Dubrovnik.

The first stop on their cruise down the coast of Greece was in Kotor, in the country of Montenegro. This destination has a raw, natural beauty thanks to the picturesque Balkan mountains and glass-like waters of the Bay of Kotor.

Next stop was the fun and lively waterfront town of Mykonos, which is full of great cafes, shops, and views of their famous windmills. There are over 500 beautiful churches and several great beaches. One of the best things to do is wander through the cobblestone streets and stop at one of the many coffee shops or cafes. You should also make time to explore Little Venice.

Santorini may be the most photogenic out of all the Greek towns, with the gorgeous white buildings and blue roofs dotting the cliffs that overlook the sea. You’ll find tons of little beaches and cafes to explore, and a great place for hiking. They explored the town of Oia (pronounced ee-ah). Much of the movie Mama Mia was based in Santorini. The dramatically steep cliffs of the island are a result of one of the largest volcanic eruptions in history. The volcano erupted in 1600 B.C., creating what we now call Santorini. Another result of the Minoan Eruption, as it’s called, is that the island of Thira sank to the bottom of the caldera, resulting in what is sometimes referred to as the Lost City of Atlantis. It is a heavily debated topic, but be sure to stop in the underground bookstore called Atlantis .

The bay where the ship anchored was once the highest point of the island and is now 1300 feet deep in some places. It currently measures 32 miles square. The cliffs rise dramatically above the caldera, and the stunning white cliff towns of Fire and Oia are what first greeted the ship when it arrived.

You can take a gondola or donkey, or walk the 600 steps up and down the cliffs to explore the town from your boat. Kem and Lori walked even though they did not recommend that as the donkeys are on the same path and seem to have the right of way. Santorini definitely lives up to the hype as it is beautiful and is best described as “dreamy”

In Corfu, the last stop before the final destination of Dubrovnik, the group toured the Castle of Sissi.

Finally, the group disembarked the Norwegian Star ship for their final destination: Dubrovnik. They definitely saved the best for last, because Dubrovnik is breathtaking! You may recognize it as the frequent setting for many films and television shows. Most notably, it is the setting for the fictional city of King’s Landing on HBO’s hit show Game of Thrones.

Dubrovnik is known for its famous imperious walls. The imposing walls surround the city and are up to six meters thick in some areas. They have never once been breached by a hostile army. It takes about an hour make the full circuit along the battlements of walls. This hour also gives you time to stop for the stunning panoramic views of the city and the Adriatic Sea.

Here they stayed at the  Grand Hotel Argentina , which had an amazing location built into the cliffs and directly on the water.

They ate at  Buza Bar , which absolutely cannot be missed! The bar is literally built into the cliffs and overlooks the water with stunning views.

Rome/Civitavecchia

Located about 80 kilometers northwest of Rome, the Port of Civitavecchia is the port of Rome and a busy ferry and cargo port serving Italy and southern Europe. Lying on Italy’s eastern shores on the Tyrrhenian Sea, the Port of Civitavecchia has excellent direct connections to Rome. It is an important cruise and ferry port with regular passage to Sardinia, Malta, Sicily, Tunis, and Barcelona. Fishing is of secondary importance to the Port of Civitavecchia. In addition to ocean-going traffic, the Port of Civitavecchia also contains a thermoelectric center and metallurgical works. In 2006, over 51 thousand people called the Port of Civitavecchia home. The Port of Civitavecchia was built on an earlier Etruscan settlement. Emperor Trajan founded the Port of Civitavecchia in the early 2nd Century, calling it Centumcellae. Today, Trajan’s Port is preserved within today’s Port of Civitavecchia. A busy growing town during the late Roman era, the Port of Civitavecchia was attacked by Vandals and then destroyed by the Saracens in 828 AD. Residents escaped to the nearby Allumiere Mountains where Pope Leo IV built a walled town in 854. Eventually, the people returned to Civitavecchia (the name means “old city”). At the end of the 15th Century, the Port of Civitavecchia was under frequent attack by pirates. The naval arsenal was constructed in 1508. Pope Paul III commissioned the building of the keep, which was designed by Donato Bramante and then finished by Michelangelo in 1537, to protect the Port of Civitavecchia from the pirate attacks. In 1696, Civitavecchia became a free port under Pope Innocent XII. Because it was Rome’s main port, the French occupied the Port of Civitavecchia in 1849. The Port of Civitavecchia was linked to Rome by the Rome and Civitavecchia Rail Road in 1859. When the Port of Civitavecchia became part of the Kingdom of Italy in 1870, it was one of the Papal State’s most strongly-fortified towns when Papal troops welcomed General Nino Bixio on behalf of the Italian unification forces into the Port of Civitavecchia fortress. World War II brought destruction to as much as three-quarters of the Port of Civitavecchia. Reconstruction enlarged the Port of Civitavecchia beyond its pre-war area. The Autorita Portuale Civitavecchia (Port of Rome) is responsible for managing and operating the Port of Civitavecchia as well as the ports of Fiumicino and Gaeta. The modern Port of Civitavecchia is at the center of rail, road, and air networks that link it with central Italy and the world. The Port of Civitavecchia has capacity to handle about 11 million tons of cargo per year and over 1.5 million passengers. Cargoes include forest products, cereals, iron and steel, chemicals, automobiles, containers, and liquid bulk. In 2007, the Port of Civitavecchia welcomed 856 cruise vessels carrying 1.6 million passengers, and the total number of passengers using ferries and cruise vessels was 3.8 million. In 2007, the Port of Civitavecchia handled a total of 7.7 million tons of cargo. This total included 1.5 million tons of liquid bulk, 1.7 million tons of solid bulk, 4.6 million tons of packages, and 31.1 thousand TEUs of containerized cargo. The Port of Civitavecchia contains 28 berths of a total 5.6 thousand meters in length with alongside depths from 6 to 18 meters. Port properties include five warehouses containing 36 thousand square meters for handling and storing cargoes. The intermodal terminal includes seven thousand square meters of storage space and 12.5 thousand square meters for loading/unloading rail cars and parking. The Port of Civitavecchia is one of the busiest ferry ports in the world. Just 80 kilometers northwest of Rome, it is the main tourist destination for people traveling to the Eternal City. It is also a central port for ferries carrying passengers to more local destinations. The ferry terminal offers a complete line of amenities. Different ferry companies offer services to the various destinations. Moby Lines handles crossings to Olbia, Sardinia. Corsica Sardinia Ferries runs services to Golfo Aranci. Grimaldi Ferries carries passengers to Barcelona and Tunis, and Grand Navi Veloci operates a route to Tunis. Ferrovie dello Stato operates a combined rail-ferry service to Golfo Aranci.

Naples, a city in southern Italy, sits on the Bay of Naples. Nearby is Mount Vesuvius, the still-active volcano that destroyed nearby Roman town Pompeii. Dating to the 2nd millennium B.C., Naples has centuries of important art and architecture. The city's cathedral, the Duomo di San Gennaro, is filled with frescoes. Other major landmarks include the lavish Royal Palace and Castel Nuovo, a 13th-century castle.

Messina is a harbor city in northeast Sicily, separated from mainland Italy by the Strait of Messina. It’s known for the Norman Messina Cathedral, with its Gothic portal, 15th-century windows and an astronomical clock on the bell tower. Nearby are marble fountains decorated with mythological figures, like the Fontana di Orione, with its carved inscriptions, and the Neptune Fountain, topped by a statue of the sea god.

If you've ever wondered what sort of prize you'd get for saving Europe, look no further than Valletta. Named after La Valette, the Grandmaster who masterminded Malta's successful stand against the Turkish siege of 1565, Valletta became the city of the Knights of the Order of St John and the seat of Malta's government. While travelling through the Mediterranean, Sir Walter Scott described Valletta as 'the city built by gentlemen for gentlemen'. Today it's a beautifully preserved 16th-century walled city, small enough to cover in a few hours without sweating too much in the Mediterranean sun. In fact, the streets were carefully laid out to channel cool breezes in from the harbour. Situated on the northeast coast of Malta, Valletta is the capital, and is built on the promontory of Mount Sciberras which juts out into the middle of a bay. This dissects the bay into two deep harbours: the Grand Harbour to the east and the Marsamxett to the west. Valletta is a rough rectangle at the tip of a peninsula on the coast, just a few hundred metres across in either direction and thus surrounded by water on its northern, eastern and southern sides. The city was named after Jean Parisot de la Valette who was the Grand Master of the Order of the Knight Hospitallers (Knights of Saint John of Jerusalem). This famed religious order of hospitallers was founded in Jerusalem in the 11th century and made their base in Malta after they were expelled from Rhodes by the Ottoman Turks. During the time of Grand Master La Valette, in 1565, the Knights and the Maltese managed to suppress a siege on the island by the forces of Süleyman the Magnificent, Sultan of the Ottoman Empire in what was to become known as one of history's greatest sieges. Following the siege, the building of the city began in the same year 1565 in order to create a base for the defence of the island. Although Grand Master La Valette managed to lay the first stone, he died before its completion. Most of the embellishments of Valletta were done during the time of Grand Master La Cassiere, especially the magnificent St John's Co-Cathedral. The reign of the Knights of St John eventually came to an end with the successful invasion by Napoleon who occupied Malta on his way to Egypt. A Maltese revolt against the French garrison was the catalyst for the occupation of Valletta by the British in 1800. Valetta is also the spot where the Italian fleet surrendered to the Allies in 1943. Valletta's network of streets is laid out in an orthogonal grid dominated by a main artery which crosses the length of the entire city and opens up into a series of squares at its geometric centre, around the Palace of the Grand Masters. The city architecture is inspired by Italian Renaissance planning principles, and served as an early model of urban design. Valletta is one of the most important planned towns of the Renaissance. It equals in its noble architecture, any capital in Europe, while its timeless beauty and artistic treasures make it a well-deserved World Heritage site. There are a number of superb museums here as well as historical sites that are worth visiting. The main thoroughfare in the city is Republic Street. You'll find all the main shops and character-filled side streets leading off from here. For those interested in shopping, Merchant's Street and Lucia Street are the places to go for the most interesting merchandise. Lucia Street is famous for the exquisite silver and gold filigree jewellery sold there. Merchant Street specializes in souvenirs and is also home to a large open market.

Chania/Crete

This is the largest and most important town of western Crete, with a population of over 60,000 inhabitants. It is situated on the eastern shore of the bay of Chania, and is built on the neck of the peninsula, on the site of ancient Kydonia. Chania has, to a large degree, retained its local colour. It is one of the loveliest towns in Greece and the many vestiges of its past give it a particular charm. Entire Venetian, Turkish and Jewish neighbourhoods still survive, with well-preserved buildings, while the modern town, continuing to develop, is built according to well-designed plans, with parks and attractive edifices. It differs considerably from the tasteless big towns of today. Chania disposes of a large number of beds in hotels of various categories.There are also pensions and guest houses. There are many restaurants - some of them offering foreign specialities - tavernas, seafood restaurants, "ouzeries", pastry shops, coffee shops,pubs etc. in every neighbourhood and especially in the harbour area, which is lit up by the shop lights in the evenings and sparkles like a fairy-tale town.

Kotor is a fortified town on Montenegro’s Adriatic coast, in a bay near the limestone cliffs of Mt. Lovcen. Characterized by winding streets and squares, its medieval old town has several Romanesque churches, including Kotor Cathedral. It's also home to the Maritime Museum, which explores local seafaring history. Sveti Ðorde, one of 2 tiny islands off the ancient town of Perast, features a centuries-old church.

Dubrovnik - the city of a unique political and cultural history (the Dubrovnik Republic, the Statute from 1272), of world-famous cultural heritage and beauty (inscribed on the List of World Heritage Sites by Unesco) - is one of the most attractive and famous cities of the Mediterranean. Apart from its outstanding natural beauties and well-preserved cul-tural and historical heritage, Dubrovnik also offers high-quality visitor opportunities. It is also the city of hotels, of high ecological standards and tourist programs, and is equally attractive in all seasons. Its geographical isolation is compensated by high traffic and communication standards - especially through air traffic and fast hydrofoil boats. The tourist development of Dubrovnik started before the First World War; quite soon, the exclusiveness of its attractions made Dubrovnik a powerful international tourist centre. The sightseeing of Dubrovnik and its monuments requires several days. However, already a walk through Stradun, through narrow streets and small squares, monumental ramparts and fortreses, provides enough opportunities to experience the millennial beauty of its shell-shaped urban core, centuries of building, stone-cutting, carving and engraving, the history of the Duke's Palace, libraries, the oldest pharmacy in the south of Europe, etc. Dubrovnik offers individual choice among numerous museums and galleries, which contain the jewels of Croatian heritage. The Dubrovnik Museum in the Duke's Palace keeps 15,500 exhibits in its cultural and historical department. A collection of furniture from the 17th-19th century, uniforms of dukes and councillors, aristocratic garments and many other items are exhibited in the authentic halls of the palace. The Maritime Museum (situated in the fortress Sveti Ivan) has a number exhibits on a permanent display, related to the maritime affairs of Dubrovnik and Croatia on the whole, with a particular emphasis on the history of the Dubrovnik Republic. The museum of the Franciscan monastery keeps all inventories of the old pharmacy, as well as the works of Dubrovnik jewel-lers, painters and embroiders. The museum of the Dominican monastery exhibits valuable examples of Dubrovnik painting from the 15th and the 16th centuries, as well as sculptures, jewellery, manuscripts, incunabula and notes (music). The treasury of the Dubrovnik cathedral keeps the relics of St. Blaise, patron of Dubrovnik, and numerous paintings and works of art. The Rupe Ethnographical Museum presents traditional occupations and the rural architecture of the region of Dubrovnik, national costumes and hand-made textiles. Very attractive is also the Aquarium of the Institute of Biology, situated in the fortress Sveti Ivan, comprising interesting marine species. Dubrovnik has a number of churches, monasteries and hotels scattered all over the town. Its coastal belt is adorned with several marinas, piers and promenades. Because of a magnificent view on the mediaeval Dubrovnik, a walk along the town ramparts is a must for each visitor. A great number of Dubrovnik restaurants and taverns offer delicious specialities of local and international cuisine. Sports and recreational facilities include playgrounds, courts and requisites for all sports in the sea and on the ground, from tennis and table tennis to sailing and yachting. There are also several gyms and fitness centres with swimming pools, saunas, massage, aerobics, solarium, box gyms, etc. Dubrovnik is famous for quality hotels. Most of them are situated on the Lapad peninsula and in the area of Ploce, southeast of the old town. The hotel complex Dubrava - Babin Kuk on Lapad has all features of a small town. It has a shopping centre, a bank, an out-patient department, many restaurants and cafés, and a street called the "New Stradun", which connects all hotels. Dubrovnik is the city of an outstanding cultural and artistic life. The most important event in the cultural life of the city is the Dubrovnik Summer Festival (10th of July - 25th of August), traditionally held since 1950. It is a theatre and classical and folk music festival, since 1956 included in the calendar of world festivals and as such one of the most famous cultural events in the world. Concerts and other performances take place on open stages in the town (Gunduliceva Poljana, Drziceva Poljana, Lovrijenac, Revelin) or in beautiful interiors of the most famous buildings (Duke's Palace, cloisters, churches). The repertoire includes works of Croatian and world classics, performed by the leading personalities from Croatia and abroad, including a number of world-famous actors, directors, conductors, etc. So far several hundreds of them have performed in Dubrovnik. An important part of the Festival are performances of local (Lindo, Lado) and foreign folk music ensembles. The artistic life of Dubrovnik is characterized by numerous exhibitions taking place throughout the year. Apart from already renowned galleries - the Art Gallery (Put Frana Supila 23), its exhibition space Luza Art Centre (Stradun), Sebastian - occasional and permanent exhibitions are also held in other spaces as well. Very famous are also Dubrovnik carnival festivities - so-called Dubrovnik "karnevo" (local variant of the word "carnival"), held ever since the early Middle Ages, when they were brought from the neighbouring Italy. Another important event is the Feast Day of St. Blaise, also the Day of Dubrovnik (3rd of February). The feast takes place for the whole week, including religious ceremonies, a procession through the town, concerts, sports events, entertainment and carnival programs. Excursions to Dubrovnik during that week are regularly organized.

The City of Split marks 1700 years since the beginning of the construction of Diocletian's Palace. Split, a city where every epoche since antiquity has left its traces, was conceived within the walls of the palace which was built by the Roman Emperor Diocletian as his private residence. The well-preserved palace has been listed as UNESCO's register of the worlds cultural heritage. During these 1700 years plus, Split has played an important role in Croatian history. Today, Split is the center of cultural and scientific life, with many institutions, museums, gallerys and theatres. Split is the second biggest city of Croatia. Due to its central position on the Adriatic coast and its exceptional environment, Split soon developed into the leading and biggest city of South Croatia, its large port, commercial and industrial center and an important European touristic resort. The present city of Split is an organic fusion of its antique heritage and of modern architecture, set up in the beautiful Mediterranean environment and full of a sober and thoughtful atmosphere of a big city.As the scientific centre of the region, Split's scientific institutions have had remarkable results in many fields including the protection and study of cultural and natural heritage, oceanography, fishery, Adriatic agricultural cultures, etc. Split is also known for great accomplishments in sports, notably basketball, soccer, tennis, handball, rowing, sailing, and waterpolo. Split hosted the Mediterranean Sport Games and the European Athletic Championships. Split is connected by rail to the hinterland, by ferry boats to the Adriatic islands, Italy and Croatia, and to the rest of the world by its international airport.

Trieste is the capital city of the Friuli Venezia Giulia region in northeast Italy. A port city, it occupies a thin strip of land between the Adriatic coast and Slovenia’s border on the limestone-dominated Karst Plateau. Italian, Austro-Hungarian and Slovenian influences are all evident in its layout, which encompasses a medieval old city and a neoclassical Austrian quarter.

‘Slow travel at its most joyous’: our three-week road trip to Croatia

Rather than bomb down motorways for marathon stretches, the idea was to see new things along the way, such as the great lakes of Germany and a Renaissance town in Italy

H ow far would you go – and how long would you take – to avoid flying and thoroughly embrace the idea of slow travel? In my case, it was 3,167 miles over three weeks. For nearly a decade I had wanted to do a road trip to Croatia, and to get as much out of the journey as the destination itself. Rather than bomb down the motorway for marathon stretches, the idea was to slow down and see new things.

It seemed we had barely rolled off Le Shuttle (the name Eurotunnel reverted to last spring) before my husband and I were out of France and bouncing along Belgium’s bumpy motorways. After a six-hour drive, Germany’s oldest city, Trier, made a pleasant overnight stop, the reconstructed gothic Hauptmarkt square bathed in late afternoon sunlight. Its summer pop-up bar taught me that the Mosel wine region makes some very drinkable rosés.

Germany proved to be one of those places where I couldn’t stop making mental notes on things to come back and explore; and the night we spent in Munich made me wonder why I had never visited before. It wasn’t just handsome Marienplatz and its neo-gothic new town hall; the food shops and stalls on Viktualienmarkt made me seriously hungry.

Rather than stay in the old town, we picked a hotel in Werksviertel, a few S-Bahn stops away. This former industrial area is now full of container bars, sleek hotels (including ours, the Adina , which has a fabulous roof terrace), concert venues and a huge ferris wheel.

Another lovely surprise – the first of many the next day – was Chiemsee, whose waters we glimpsed from the autobahn to Austria. Bavaria’s largest lake shot up my “How on earth have I never heard of this place and can I please come back?” list.

Our entry into Italy’s snappily named Friuli-Venezia-Giulia region coincided nicely with lunchtime. Determined to avoid a dire motorway meal, we found a restaurant in tiny Tarvisio where pizzas came smothered with local San Daniele ham. Later, in Udine, we watched a beautiful Renaissance town wake from its afternoon snooze and come alive with the evening passeggiata . An aperitivo in Piazza Giacomo Matteotti, a wander under Piazza della Libertà’s porticos, and a dinner of spaghetti alle vongole is what you want after a five-hour drive. The next day, when we caught our first glimpse of the Adriatic on our way to Trieste and stopped for lunch surrounded by Habsburg stateliness, I was making more plans to return.

Our Italian interlude was so delightful I was almost sorry to whiz through Slovenia and finally into Croatia. My goal was my parents’ region of Lika, in the west of the country, above Zadar, but for once I wasn’t visiting the inland area where my family came from. When I was writing my Croatia travelogue, My Family and Other Enemies , in 2022, I lamented how – with the exception of Plitvice Lakes national park and its surroundings – much of this beautiful region is being left behind in Croatia’s tourism boom. My intention this time was to explore Lika’s western half, where tourism has more of a foothold.

It’s easy to find a bucolic bolthole in Lika’s karst mountain landscape of forests, rivers and lakes. An online trawl came up with a wooden cottage outside the village of Perušić. Named IV-AN after its genial owner from nearby Gospić, the cottage was backed by forests and fronted by farmland. The only sounds were birdsong, crickets and, come evening, sizzling meats on the barbecue. My new obsession, the Merlin Bird ID app, picked up the calls of nuthatches, nightingales, owls and shrikes.

The lane behind led to Grabovača cave park , whose Samograd cave had been on my must-see list. Unfortunately, I was recovering from a knee injury and couldn’t tackle the slippery steps. The same went for other activities that are turning Lika into a giant adventure playground – rafting and kayaking on the Gacka and Lika Rivers and Lake Krušćica, mountain biking, quad biking and even just plain old hiking. But Lika has other tricks up its sleeve.

One of the most captivating is in the village of Kuterevo, about 45 minutes’ drive from our cottage. Since 2002, the Bear Refuge has been looking after orphaned brown bears whose mothers had been killed, or who had been rescued from illegal zoos, all kept in spacious enclosures. It’s free to enter, but volunteer wardens are happy to take donations. When it’s hot, the bears lurk in the shade, but on this rainy morning they were all ambling about. The most poignant was Bruno, who arrived in 2019 from an illegal zoo, and he still hasn’t lost his captivity habit of pacing back and forth.

Apart from Plitvice, Lika’s other claim to fame is the birthplace of Serbian-American inventor Nikola Tesla, whose village of Smiljan has spawned a mini-industry. At the Memorial Center Nikola Tesla you don’t have to be a science buff to enjoy the demonstration of the Tesla coil, the film about the inventor’s life, or the exhibits in the house where he was born – beside the 1765 church where Tesla’s father was parish priest.

Smiljan is only three miles from Lika’s county seat, Gospić, and its Lika Museum , housed in an attractive 18th-century building. Among the medieval artefacts and Habsburg furniture is a really good art gallery with an exhibition of early 20th-century photographs. Those photos had me spellbound: my paternal grandfather was Gospić’s railway stationmaster briefly, until his untimely death in 1933, and this gave me a glimpse into his world.

Western Lika’s other major town is Otočac, in the Gacka valley, the focus of much of the area’s outdoor pursuits. Most of the River Gacka is below ground, but what can be seen in this broad valley is serenely beautiful, shaded by trees and full of brown trout. If I couldn’t go kayaking, at least I could find a riverside restaurant – Bistro Ribić and Bumerang were particularly good – and we feasted on two whole grilled trout for €12.

Two of the three major sources that feed into the Gacka are only a few miles apart, both wondrous little watery worlds. At Majerovo Vrilo, old restored mill houses (one still milling flour) form a bridge across the mini rapids; behind them the clear water lay still and blue, with reeds and lily pads adding touches of green to match the forested hills behind. A handful of wooden houses overlook this idyllic spot, and I envied their occupants on their waterside terraces. It was a similar sight at Tonkovićevo Vrilo, where more of this sparkling water was burbling under wooden bridges.

In a region that still shows traces of war and continues to lose its young people to emigration, it was pleasing to see hikers, cyclists, anglers and kayakers enjoying this vast landscape. And one young man was there to keep Lika’s spirit flowing, literally. Ivan Vlainić, 31, is bucking the trend for leaving the countryside, having moved from Zagreb to become the fifth generation to run the family brandy business, Stilanova Lika .

“More young people like me have realised that we can make a living here,” he told me during a tasting of his smooth brandies in the restored family house outside Perušić.

Soon, however, we were leaving Lika to meander along the Istrian coast back towards Italy and a last-minute decision to visit Venice. That night, our simple one-star hotel on Italy’s Lake Iseo astonished us with its five-star view of the sun setting on Monte Isola. A few days in the French Alps and a final night in Burgundy rounded off our road trip. My brain was a jumble of languages, my phone overflowing with photos. It was slow travel at its most joyous, and worth the wait.
