Does Visit Malaysia branded on Cardiff City shirts do anything for tourism - Bethan Darwin explores

The club's owner is Malaysian entrepreneur Vincent Tan

Visit Malaysia.

This is what Cardiff City’s owner Vincent Tan has been urging football fans to do from the front of his team’s shirt since 2011.

The Malaysian government’s ministry of tourism contributed a reported £3m when Cardiff City first returned to the Premiership under Tan’s ownership.

The sponsorship was criticised by opposition MP Hee Loy Sian as “wasteful” and not likely to result in sufficient extra tourists visiting Malaysia to make the cost worthwhile.

Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz responded in a written answer that Premiership broadcasts reached a global audience of 720 million people across 80 media partners.

The Malaysian government did not continue its sponsorship in following seasons but Vincent Tan and his fellow Malaysian, the Sultan of Johor, have kept the logo.

“I’m a Malaysian and I love my country. I would not change the Visit Malaysia logo and even the Sultan of Johor wants us to keep it that way,” Mr Tan said last year.

So do the people of South Wales choose Malaysia as a holiday destination in preference to other long-haul destinations, as a result of repeated invitations to do so emblazoned on the chests of Cardiff City players?

Probably not.

Malaysia’s Ministry of Tourism keeps statistics on tourist arrivals.

These are for the UK as a whole, not broken down by region, and the data published online shows a gentle decline in tourist arrivals from the UK (445,789 in 2014 to 361,335 in 2018).

It is the short-haul market (Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand and Brunei) that makes up the lion’s share of tourist arrivals to Malaysia, accounting for 69.2% of tourist arrivals for the period January to May 2019.

To give this and UK visitor numbers some additional context, there were 10.6 million visitors to Malaysia from Singapore in 2018, 3.2 million from Indonesia and 1.9m from Thailand.

A two-word command on the front of a football jersey to “Visit Malaysia” is not likely to tempt people to incur the financial cost and carbon footprint of the long-haul flight to Malaysia.

cardiff city visit malaysia

However, we “Visited Malaysia” on our family summer holiday this year and if there was room on the Cardiff City shirt this is just some of what it might say:

Visit Malaysia and you’ll get an understanding of how geography determines the future of a country. How being a midway stopping-off point on the trade routes between China and India will attract people from all over - India, China, Portugal, Netherlands and Britain - to compete for ownership, language, culture and religion.

How a colonial history can layer up language and culture over time so that there is a distinction between Straits Chinese, descended from Chinese settlers from the southern provinces who came to Malaysia first and who kept their culture but not their language and speak Peranakan Malay, and later Chinese settlers to Malaysia who retained the language of their home country.

How against all odds everyone will more or less get on in the end so that the clichéd term “melting pot” really does apply to the swirl of different histories and cultures and cuisines to be found in Malaysia.

Visit Malaysia for a warm welcome and to feel the weight of history and the lessons to be learned from the past, like seaside town Sandakan in Borneo, previously British North Borneo.

Visitors come here to visit the orang-utan sanctuary and in the hope of seeing orang-utans and proboscis monkeys in the wild in the Borneo rainforests.

Sandakan is also where Australian and British Prisoners of War captured by the Japanese in the Battle of Singapore in 1942 were shipped and then forced to march to Ranau. Only six Australians out of the 2,345 prisoners survived.

Don’t fancy history or rainforests? Then Visit Malaysia for its sandy beaches, turquoise seas and sunny climate.

It’s reasonably priced, too.

But don’t expect to see anyone wearing a Cardiff City shirt.

We didn’t spot a single one.

‘Malaysia Berjaya’ Ganti ‘Visit Malaysia’ Pada Jersi Cardiff City

  • August 26, 2020

cardiff city visit malaysia

Cardiff City's new home and away kits for the upcoming season have been unveiled.

Released on Thursday morning, the new home kit features a sublimated wave design on the front of the shirt with a dash green tipping on the sleeves and collar, with the Adidas three stripes across the shoulders in white.

The home strip is completed with white shorts with stripes in blue and blue socks. On the reverse of the home shirt is the Bluebird underneath the collar.

The new away strip is dash green with a tonal camouflage with neck detailing and three stripes in navy. The kit is completed by navy shorts with white stripes and navy socks.

City’s goalkeepers will be playing in full coral or green strips.

Cardiff's orange and blue away strip from the 2019/20 season will be registered as the club’s third kit for 2020/21.

A change for the new season will also see Cardiff City’s front of shirt read "Malaysia Berjaya" instead of "Visit Malaysia".

Club owner Vincent Tan said: "Since 2011, it has been an honour to help promote my country via the front of our playing shirts. For the 2020/21 season, our front of shirt will read 'Malaysia Berjaya', referencing the country, of course, but also my Berjaya Corporation that was established in 1984 and continues to push boundaries across the globe to this day.

"I am very proud of my country and the Berjaya Corporation; Berjaya is the Malaysian word for success and that is something I wish for in abundance for Neil Harris and our players in the upcoming campaign. Berjaya Malaysia: Success to Malaysia and Cardiff City."

As a part of their two-season sponsorship agreement with the Bluebirds, Samtrade FX - an online trading brokerage founded to provide "traders with safe, easy and low-cost access to foreign exchange markets" - will feature on the back of the first team shirts.

When are the kits released?

Supporters can now pre-order replica kits to be sent out on Thursday, September 10, 2020 .

Fans can pre-order the new kit here.

The club says home mini kits for children aged 18 months to six years will be available soon.

Cardiff City Stadium's store remains closed and all orders are for delivery only.

How much is the new kit?

The Cardiff City new home shirt is priced at £50, with home shorts costing £28 and socks are £13.

The junior shirt priced from £40, junior shorts are £23 and junior socks are £13.

What about shirt printing?

The club says shirt printing with the new EFL numbers and lettering is available, but stressed the 2020/21 squad numbers are still to be confirmed.

The new season will also see the introduction of sleeve badges for children, which are an adaption of the adult Sky Bet badge but offer the opportunity to personalise the shirt further.

Malaysia's $100 billion ghost town really wants to draw in tourists. It's not working.

  • Forest City, a luxury development in Malaysia, is banking on tourism to shed its ghost town image.
  • Forest City claimed that several thousand tourists have visited the development.
  • But tourists and business owners alike said it's not an attractive destination to spend or make money.

Insider Today

Wendy Noble lives 15 minutes away from Malaysia's Forest City , across the border in Singapore. One Friday, after a tiring week at graduate school, all the 25-year-old wanted was to lounge by a beach.

A quick scroll through online photos of a pristine beach and luxurious golf resort inspired her and her roommate, Ree Nemis, to head to Forest City the following day.

Country Garden, the largest developer in China, spent $100 billion building Forest City. The developer promoted it as a "living paradise" meant to house 700,000 people in luxury high-rise condominiums and villas.

The reality turned out to be different. Instead, it's now one of Southeast Asia's most prominent ghost towns. Rows of skyscrapers make way to an empty beach. Roads that stretched for miles didn't have a single car on them. The nearby hotel looked abandoned, with dragonflies breeding in the discolored swimming pool.

"My first impression was that it was quiet and only very few people were there," Noble said. Nemis added that the estate's facilities did not appear to be well-maintained.

Forest City has shown it wants to shed its reputation as a ghost town, writing in a press release in March 2023 that it's a place to experience "coastal resort life" and branding itself as a "popular short-haul tourist destination." Forest City added in the press release that at least 15,000 people had visited its local waterpark from August to September 2022.

"The destination has been attracting not only local travelers but also many tourists coming from afar," Syarul Izam, the vice president of Forest City, said in the press release.

But this hasn't done much to transform its image.

"The locals had a certain look when we said we're going to Forest City," Noble told BI, referring to the people they had met on the way to the development.

Forest City is hosting events in an attempt to draw in tourists

In recent months, the development has held several events, including golf tournaments and triathlons, to draw visitors.

At first glance, the few thousand visitors to Forest City may not seem significant. Johor — the Malaysian state where the estate is located — received more than 16.6 million tourists last year, per data from Johor's tourism agency.

Still, it points to significant growth in Forest City's tourism sector, Adilah Zain, a professor of tourism at MARA Technological University in Malaysia, told Business Insider.

"Forest City is able to attract the weekend tourists," Adilah said, referring to tourists like Noble and Nemis.

In 2022, one expert familiar with Johor's real estate market told BI that only several thousand people were living in Forest City. In August, Country Garden told Bloomberg there were 9,000 residents living there. In comparison, Monaco, a city-state that's four times smaller than Forest City, has 36,000 residents.

Country Garden, which has a 60% stake in the estate, did not respond to multiple requests for comment from BI. The remaining 40% is owned by Sultan Ibrahim, who was crowned the king of Malaysia in January.

In 2019, right before the pandemic, there were more than 10 buses that ferried tourists to Forest City on property tourism packages every day, Adilah said. While the development continues to struggle to entice people to live in its tens of thousands of empty condominiums and villas, its tourism strategy may have a chance.

When BI visited Forest City on a weekend in March, there were several dozen people at the development's public attractions, including the waterpark, artificial beach, and mall. Most of them appeared to be Malaysians, with many speaking Malay.

That weekend, Challenge Malaysia, a local triathlon, was being held at the beach. Photos posted online by the event's organizer showed about a hundred people participating in the race.

It was noticeably busier than when BI first visited Forest City in May 2022.

Back then, only a handful of people were at the beach and the mall, and the waterpark wasn't operational. Much of the vicinity was empty, with dark, towering buildings and no cars on the road. Some areas — including a wedding venue and a swimming pool — appeared to have been left to decay. Now, these places have been revamped and look better maintained, with the pool available for hotel guests to use.

BI spoke to several tourists who traveled to Forest City for the triathlon. Shawn and Gary, Malaysians who appeared to be in their late 20s, told BI they had traveled six hours to Forest City from their homes in Kuala Lumpur to take part in the triathlon. But the pair said they were less than impressed.

"I wouldn't come here. There's nothing here. It's quiet dead," Shawn said.

"I didn't know what to expect. We've heard it's quite run down, and it turned out it's not that bad, but I'd rather go somewhere else if not for the event," he added.

Tourists aren't spending enough — except at the golf resort

Several people who own businesses in the development said the increase in tourists hasn't translated into much profit.

"They come to the beach but don't spend a cent," one food entrepreneur, who declined to be named for privacy reasons, told BI. "There's no point if it's crowded and the people don't spend," they added, noting that many of the visitors bring their own food rather than patronizing the eateries in the area.

One attraction that appeared to be pulling repeat visitors — and has gotten them to spend money — is Forest City's golf resort. Adilah noted that local golfers and tourists have continued to flock there to stay in one of its 298 rooms and buy packages to play on its sprawling golf course.

While there is no official data on how many people have stayed at the hotel since it opened in September 2018, BI observed at least 50 guests — a mix of golfers and locals on family holidays — at the hotel's lobby and swimming pool.

The golf resort — known for its grand lobby displaying a model of Forest City — cost almost $600 million to construct .

Chandran, 28, a tourist from Singapore who had dined in one of the handful of eateries at the golf resort, said he thought it looked modern and luxurious.

"Next time, I want to book the suite at the hotel. My friend said he booked a room after he saw an advertisement for it on Booking.com, and it's great," he said, adding that the nightly rates were much cheaper than in Singapore. A night at the hotel starts at around $90.

As for the rest of the estate, though, Chandran had a different take.

"It's a bit creepy. Most of the houses are empty," he added.
