The UNESCO listed fjord landscape

When you see it, there is no wonder why the Geirangerfjord is on UNESCO’s World Heritage list. The fjord is surrounded by a pristine landscape of steep, tall mountains and cascading waterfalls such as the Knivsflå waterfalls which is known as the Seven Sisters and the the Suitor. The small farms you can see clinging to the mountain sides, seems almost uninhabitable. They have stayed more or less untouched in modern times and are only accessible by boat and foot.

Together with the Nærøyfjord, the Geirangerfjord has been on the World Heritage List since 2005 as West Norwegian Fjords. According to UNESCO, the two fjords are considered as archetypical fjord landscapes and among the most scenically outstanding anywhere.

Ukraine targets Moscow in ‘one of largest ever’ drone attacks

Assault on the Russian capital launched as Ukraine presses on with major incursion into Russia’s Kursk region.

Ukraine

Ukraine has launched one of its largest drone attacks on Moscow, as it presses on with a major incursion into Russia’s Kursk region, Russian authorities said.

Russia’s Ministry of Defence said on Wednesday that air defence forces shot down 11 drones over Moscow and its surrounding region, with some reportedly downed over the city of Podolsk some 38km (24 miles) south of the Kremlin.

Russia-ukraine war: list of key events, day 908, putin inspects troops with kadyrov on first chechnya visit since 2011, ukraine adopts ‘historic’ law to ban moscow-linked orthodox church.

“This is one of the largest ever attempts to attack Moscow with drones,” Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said on the Telegram messaging app. No damage or casualties were reported.

Drone attacks on Moscow are rare. Ukraine’s latest attempt to target the Russian capital appeared to be larger than an attack in May 2023, when at least eight drones were struck down.

The barrage was part of a broader attack on Russia, with the Ministry of Defence saying its air defence units destroyed 45 Ukrainian drones in total overnight.

In addition to the 11 drones destroyed over the Moscow region, 23 drones were downed in the border region of Bryansk, six in the border region of Belgorod, three in the Kaluga region, which borders the Moscow region to its northeast, and two in the embattled Kursk region , the ministry said.

Russia’s state news agency RIA reported that two drones were destroyed over the Tula region, which borders the Moscow region to its north.

Following the assault on Moscow, temporary restrictions were imposed overnight at Moscow’s Vnukovo, Domodedovo and Zhukovsky airports, but all three returned to normal operations later on Wednesday.

Reporting from the Ukrainian capital Kyiv, Al Jazeera’s defence editor, Alex Gatopoulos, said given how well protected Moscow and other Russian cities are “it remains to be seen whether this is a departure or just a one-off by Ukraine’s military command”.

Lightning raid

Ukraine’s drone assault came as Russia struggles to push Ukrainian forces out of Kursk , two weeks after the surprise incursion.

Alexei Smirnov, the acting regional governor of Kursk, said one person was killed and two injured after a Ukrainian drone dropped an explosive on a vehicle.

Kyiv also claimed to have destroyed Russian pontoon bridges with US-made weapons to defend its incursion.

A video posted by Ukrainian special forces showed strikes on several pontoon crossings in the region, where Russia has reported that Ukraine has destroyed at least three bridges over the Seym river.

“Where do Russian pontoon bridges ‘disappear’ in the Kursk region? Operators … accurately destroy them,” Ukraine’s Special Operations Forces said on Telegram messenger.

In a televised address on Wednesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the incursion was continuing and that his forces controlled some areas, but he gave no further details.

Hundreds of prisoners were taken and tens of thousands of civilians were forced to evacuate following Ukraine’s lightning raid on Kursk on August 6. Ukraine now claims to control 1,263sq km (488sq miles) of Kursk territory, including 93 settlements.

Russia’s electoral commission said it was postponing elections in seven municipalities in Kursk, posting on Telegram that the polls would take place once there was “a full guarantee of the security of voters”.

Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev , the deputy head of Russia’s Security Council, promised on Wednesday that there would be no talks between the two countries until Ukraine is completely defeated.

“The empty chatter of intermediaries that no one had appointed about the wonderful peace is over,” he said on Telegram. “There will be no more negotiations until the complete defeat of the enemy.”

INTERACTIVE-ATTACK_ON_KURSK_AUG_21-1724246644

On Wednesday, Ukrainian forces said they had struck an S-300 antiaircraft missile system based in Russia’s southern Rostov region.

Ukraine’s military also said it had destroyed 50 of 69 attack drones launched by Russia during an overnight attack. One had entered Ukraine from Belarus and another had returned to Russia, it said.

Ukrainian drones had hit an oil storage facility in Rostov on Sunday, sparking a massive fire. On Wednesday, hundreds of Russian firefighters were still battling the blaze.

“Does this signal a departure in Ukraine’s strategic thinking? They’ve been targeting very successfully Russia’s industrial capacity to wage war,” said Al Jazeera’s Gatopoulos, adding that the output from the oil refinery was “down to a mere fraction of what it was beforehand”.

Meanwhile, Russia’s Defence Ministry said on Wednesday that its forces have taken control of the settlement of Zhelanne in the Pokrovsk district of Donetsk, as part of an overall drive to capture the entire Donetsk region.

India-China diplomacy

Russian President Vladimir Putin met Chinese Premier Li Qiang in Moscow, the Kremlin said.

“Our countries have large-scale joint plans, projects in the economic and humanitarian areas, we expect them to last for many years,” RIA quoted Putin as saying.

Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping had agreed at a summit in May to deepen their “comprehensive partnership and strategic cooperation entering a new era”.

After meeting Putin in July, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Kyiv on Friday to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and said he will be discussing ending the war with Russia.

India has avoided condemning Russia’s invasion and is the world’s largest buyer of Russian weapons .

Ernesto could become 'major hurricane' this week; Puerto Rico braces for arrival

Forecasters say ernesto, the second named atlantic storm in a week, could drop 6 to 8 inches of rain on southeastern puerto rico..

Editor's Note: This page is a summary of news on Tropical Storm Ernesto for Tuesday, Aug. 13. For the latest news on Ernesto as it moves across the Caribbean, view USA TODAY's story on the storm for Wednesday, Aug. 14 .

Tropical Storm Ernesto strengthened and unloaded heavy rain over the northeast Caribbean islands as authorities in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands prepared for the arrival of hurricane conditions.

The storm is expected to become a hurricane Wednesday morning and "could become a major hurricane in a couple of days," the National Hurricane Center said in its 2 a.m. Atlantic Standard Time a d visory on Wednesday when Ernesto was 80 miles northwest of St. Thomas and 40 miles north of San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The storm's center was forecast to pass the northeast and north of Puerto Rico through early Wednesday, according to the hurricane center. "Ernesto should then move over the western Atlantic later in the week and approach Bermuda on Friday," the center said.

Forecasters say Ernesto, the second named Atlantic storm in a week, could cause flooding and mudslides by dropping 4 to 6 inches of rain on the U.S. and British Virgin Islands, as well as 6 to 8 inches on southeastern Puerto Rico. Tropical storm conditions were forecast to continue spreading across the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, as well as Culebra and Vieques − islands that are part of Puerto Rico − through the overnight hours.

Ernesto developed into a tropical storm Monday night as it sped toward the northern Leeward Islands before passing near Guadeloupe and Montserrat early Tuesday. The storm strengthened and organized through the morning hours, bringing sustained winds of up to 60 mph as it barreled toward the Virgin Islands and 65 mph when closing in on Puerto Rico in the evening.

Puerto Rico Gov. Pedro Pierluisi canceled Tuesday's first day of class in public schools, activated the National Guard and announced the opening of hundreds of shelters across the island. The government of the U.S. Virgin Islands also closed schools Tuesday, and Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. urged residents to take the storm seriously.

LUMA Energy, the private operator of Puerto Rico's transmission and distribution system, said on X that it had activated its emergency operations and mobilized crews in anticipation of the storm. The power company also advised residents to brace for power outages.

Ernesto: Track where the storm is heading in the latest models

As a result of Ernesto's development, the U.S. and British Virgin Islands, Culebra and Vieques were placed under hurricane watches. "If you're in those areas, you need to go ahead and get prepared for a potential for hurricane conditions," NHC Deputy Director Jamie Rhome said during a livestream.

Increasing flight cancellations at Puerto Rico's top airport

The approaching storm is scrambling air traffic in and out of Puerto Rico, a U.S. commonwealth that's home to more than 3 million American citizens and a popular vacation destination.

Luis Munoz Marin International Airport in San Juan, the island's top flight destination, canceled 32 departing and 38 arriving flights Tuesday, the largest number of any airport in the world, according to the tracking website FlightAware .

Puerto Rico officials warn of power outages

Puerto Rico, which has a history of destructive storms, faced prolonged outages due to its fragile power grid in previous years.

In 2017, Hurricanes Irma and Maria slammed the island and destroyed its power grid. Over a million Puerto Ricans were left with unreliable power and outages lasted nearly a year in some areas.

Nearly five years later, Hurricane Fiona made landfall and conditions caused the entire island to lose power, USA TODAY previously reported. Strong winds had disrupted transmission lines, resulting in "a blackout on all the island," LUMA Energy said at the time.

In December 2022, Congress approved $1 billion in funds to improve and stabilize the grid in Puerto Rico.

Will Ernesto impact the US?

While the continental U.S. will largely be spared from the storm's heavy rain and winds, authorities have warned of dangerous rip currents and rough surf along the nation's Atlantic coast. Last year, all eight deaths directly tied to Hurricane Idalia were the result of large waves and rip currents.

The Coast Guard on Monday cautioned recreational boaters, fishermen, beachgoers, and water sports enthusiasts in the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico to stay out of the water "due to deteriorating sea state conditions and dangerous rip currents associated with Tropical Storm Ernesto."

“We urge the public and the maritime community to stay safe and not underestimate the impacts of this storm,” Capt. Luis Rodriguez, Coast Guard Sector San Juan commander , said in a statement.

Dangerous rip currents are a growing concern

Weather service offices between Florida and North Carolina are ramping up their warnings about potentially dangerous beach conditions, including hazardous rip currents, along the coast starting Friday as Ernesto moves by.

Strong swells will begin to reach North Carolina beaches by Friday and coincide with a higher-than-normal tide phase, said Erik Heden, a meteorologist in the state's Morehead City office. The impacts may linger into early next week as Ernesto moves away, Heden said.

A big concern is the potential for unsuspecting tourists to get caught in rip currents in the nice weather expected this weekend. "Other coastal impacts may include ocean overwash, erosion, and a generally higher-than-normal water level," Heden said.

Rip currents are powerful channels of water perpendicular to the shore that can pull swimmers quickly into deeper water. Officials say swimmers should never enter the water in red flag conditions. If caught in a rip current, swimmers are encouraged to avoid panicking and float or swim out of the current, then swim parallel to the shore and signal for help.

Why isn't Ernesto forecast to hit the US mainland?

Ernesto is not forecast to hit the U.S. mainland and is instead predicted to curve out to sea. This isn't unusual: Of all the tropical storms and hurricanes that form in the tropical Atlantic in a given year, only about three on average make their way to U.S. shores, according to the textbook Meteorology Today.

Because hurricanes don't move themselves, they are steered around by large weather systems and global winds. Most often storms are pushed northward around or along the western portion of a ridge of high pressure over the Atlantic, commonly known as a Bermuda High. If the high is located to the east, then hurricanes generally slide around the high’s western edge into the open Atlantic Ocean without making landfall, according to the University of Rhode Island. That's what's predicted to happen with Ernesto later this week, the National Hurricane Center said.

Sometimes, however, the high is located to the west and extends far enough to the south, in which case storms are blocked from curving north and forced to continue west, putting a large bulls-eye on Florida, Cuba, and the Gulf of Mexico.

Current hurricane season

Across the eastern U.S., residents and authorities are still recovering from former Hurricane Debby, a deadly storm that triggered dangerous floods from Florida to western New York and Pennsylvania. Last month,  Hurricane Beryl  – the earliest Category 5 Atlantic hurricane on record – was linked to over 20 deaths across Texas and the Caribbean.

A couple left their home to move onto a residential cruise ship — see inside their cabin on Villa Vie Odyssey

  • Angela and Stephen Theriac purchased a cabin on the residential cruise ship Villa Vie Odyssey .
  • The ship plans to sail around the world every 3 ½ years. Its launch has been delayed by three months.
  • The cheapest dual-occupancy cabin starts at about $100,000, with an additional $3,500 monthly fee.

Insider Today

Angela Theriac hit a turning point in 2018.

In a span of six months, her mom and oldest brothers died, her husband faced a health scare, and she underwent two surgeries.

She said her perspective shifted: She decided to stop taking life for granted, grinding every day at work, and wondering if she'd ever have time to see the world.

"You know what?" Theriac, 53, a retired schoolteacher, recalled saying at the time to her husband. "Let's go for this big adventure and live life to the fullest."

That mission drove Theriac and her husband of almost 30 years, Stephen Theriac, 53, to purchase a cabin in March on a residential cruise ship called the Villa Vie Odyssey . They bought the cabin just one week after learning about it in a YouTube video.

"Sometimes, you just got to be adventurous and do it," Stephen, a retired deputy sheriff, told Business Insider.

Mikael Petterson, the founder and CEO of Villa Vie Residences, told BI in an email on Monday that Villa Vie Odyssey would embark "any day now." The 509-cabin residential cruise ship plans to circumnavigate the world every 3 ½ years, sailing to 147 countries and 425 destinations along the way.

Petterson declined to provide a specific sail date, saying the ship is still waiting for "the green light from DNV . It's impossible to say which day exactly." DNV is a certification and risk-assessment firm for the maritime industry.

Villa Vie Odyssey promises amenities, including three restaurants, five bars and lounges, a pool, and a golf simulator.

The ship's comprehensive itinerary is a dream for retirees like Angela and Stephen, who say cruising is a "big passion." Destinations include Australia; South America; Walvis Bay, Namibia; and Singapore.

Related stories

Before moving to Nicaragua in 2011, the couple spent most of their lives in Florida and frequently took advantage of their proximity to some of the busiest cruise ports in the US .

They estimate they've boarded 50 cruises over the past 25 years, with the longest lasting 39 days.

"I really enjoy seeing new places, learning of new cultures, trying different food, and drinking different microbrews," Stephen said. "It's a great lifestyle."

The couple told BI they paid for the smallest, least-expensive cabin on the never-ending cruise , partly funded by an inheritance from Angela's mother.

(The couple said they signed a nondisclosure agreement and could not tell BI how much they paid for their accommodation. However, the cheapest dual-occupancy interior cabins start at about $100,000 with an additional $3,500 monthly fee.)

The Theriacs said they've already been to popular cruise destinations like the Caribbean and Mediterranean. They're excited to go further — New Zealand for Stephen and tropical destinations like Bali, Indonesia, and Fiji for Angela, a self-proclaimed "water girl."

They said they have plans to rent their home in Nicaragua to a close friend.

The Odyssey cabin features twin beds and a vanity

The couple started decorating their floating condo with pillows, artwork, and "personal touches emphasizing storage," Angela said. "Our room is our bedroom, and the ship is our home."

But there's a caveat — while they can spend their days aboard the ship, they're not yet allowed to stay overnight.

The never-ending cruise was initially scheduled to set sail in May from Belfast, Ireland, following Villa Vie's acquisition of Fred Olsen Cruise Lines' more than 30-year-old Braemar vessel, now renamed Villa Vie Odyssey. However, Villa Vie has said issues like the aging ship's rudder stocks and recertification have since delayed its departure by three months.

Like many other would-be Villa Vie residents, the Theriacs flew to Belfast for the initial springtime departure date. Since then, the couple said they've been staying at hotels — including some a flight away in Liverpool, UK, where they say the nightly cost is cheaper — and spending time on other cruises.

Petterson said the Florida-based Villa Vie also provided residents with shuttles to and from the ship, food, drinks, excursions, and lodging — or a daily per diem for those who "choose to do their own thing."

But the couple has been patient and understanding of the delays — because, according to Stephen, "it's a now-or-never kind of thing."

"We're still in pretty good health and financially fine," Stephen said, reflecting on the sight of "80-year-olds getting off Princess ships in walkers." "I don't want to be that old and try to see the world. I want to do it now while I can still enjoy it."

Villa Vie would be the first ship of its kind in 22 years

Villa Vie isn't the only startup that has faced difficulties while trying to launch a never-ending voyage.

The residential-cruise industry has been plagued by issues since the inauguration of The World, the only ship of this kind, in 2002.

Startups trying to launch floating condominiums have since popped up as quickly as they've sunk — from Miray Cruises' Life at Sea Cruises , which shut down two weeks before it was supposed to embark in November, to Storylines , which has delayed its departure by seven years to 2026.

Miray's former CEO, Kendra Holmes, recently launched GlobeCruises, a concept similar to Life at Sea's three-year cruise , scheduled to sail in April.

GlobeCruises and Villa Vie are the only options vying to join The World in its extended voyage around the globe.

Top sights & attractions on cruises to geiranger, views from eagle’s bend road.

You won’t have to look far to find spectacular views amid all this pristine nature. Ornevegen (Eagle’s Bend Road), the steepest section of the road that connects Geiranger and Eidsdal, zigzags through 11 hair-raising switchbacks up a mountain face to 2,030 feet above the fjord. From here, you’ll have a jaw-dropping panoramic view of the Geirangerfjord, where your ship is reduced to a toy-sized speck, dwarfed by towering mountains and tumbling waterfalls.

Adventures on Two Wheels

Norwegians embrace the outdoors, and you’ll find the Geiranger area packed with opportunities for adventure. For a thrilling guided cycling tour, take a coach up to Djupvasshytta Lodge, high above the fjord. You’ll be kitted out with a bike and helmet and then set off to freewheel down the 4,000-foot descent. Breathe in the invigorating mountain air and take in the vistas of the fjord below as you make your way down at your own pace.

Geiranger Village & Storfossen

Tiny Geiranger village is a joy to explore. You’ll see old boathouses and a pretty wooden church dating back to 1842. Any tour of the village includes the nearby Storfossen waterfall, where some 300 shallow steps take you alongside the rushing river, with sweeping views down over the houses and pastures. Fjord guides explain the history and ecology of the area. In spring, when the river is powerful with meltwater, prepare to get wet in the spray.

Top things to do in geiranger, hike to storseterfossen waterfall.

Join a guided hike from the trailhead at Hole to the historic Westerås Farm, run as a sustainable tourism enterprise. The highlight of the hike, which takes you through lush meadows and past mountain streams, is Storsetrefossen, a waterfall that tumbles dramatically over an overhanging rock. You’ll stop at the historic farm where you can enjoy a much-deserved treat of coffee and waffles piled high with cream.

Visit the Norwegian Fjord Centre

If you want to learn more about the history of the Norwegian fjords, pay a visit to the Norwegian Fjord Centre, a low-rise stone and glass structure on the bank of a rushing river. Inside, there’s a clever series of exhibits explaining the geology and geography of the fjords, as well as an evocative film that immerses you in nature. Learn about the biodiversity of the fjords and how animal species have adapted to life here. There’s a welcoming café and a shop focusing on sustainable products.

Brave the Geiranger Skywalk

High up on Mt. Dalsnibba, the Geiranger Skywalk is a viewing platform that gives you the impression of being suspended between sky and fjord. A glass guard rail means there’s no visible barrier between you and the length of the Geirangerfjord, stretching out hundreds of feet below, while snowy mountains form a dramatic, jagged backdrop. There’s no better photo opportunity in Geiranger. Anybody less keen on sheer drop-offs can still enjoy sweeping fjord views from the cozy café.

Top Food & Drink in Geiranger

Norwegian cuisine is closely connected to the land and sea, and is fresh and seasonal. In summer, you’ll find an abundance of berries, including cloudberries, strawberries, raspberries, and lingonberries, adorning both sweet and savory dishes. Expect a lot of fish, including salt-cured versions, and embrace the chance to try reindeer and elk, both lean, nutritious meats. For a traditional snack, you’ll find plenty of cafés serving heart-shaped Norwegian waffles topped with jam and whipped cream. Some come with the distinctive caramel-flavored brunost cheese, considered by many visitors as an acquired taste.

Culture & History of Geiranger

Geiranger is a tiny little town; there are only around 250 permanent residents, although it’s a major tourism center for the fjords. Like the rest of the fjords, this is a landscape carved by glaciers thousands of years ago; the fjords are actually inlets that flooded with seawater when the ice retreated. Until the dawn of tourism, life revolved around farming the high pastures, and you can still see a couple of old farms seemingly hanging off the cliff edges.

Norwegians living in remote areas like this have a deep connection to nature and generally live a very healthy, outdoor life, hiking and cycling in summer and skiing in winter. Midsummer is celebrated for the nearly 24 hours of daylight, while in winter, a sense of koselig, or “coziness,” is invoked with blazing fires, candles, soft light, hot drinks, and comfort food.

Geiranger Cruise Port Facilities & Location

Since Geiranger is so small, there’s no cruise terminal right in town. Instead, your ship will dock next to a floating pier so you can walk ashore. If more than one ship is visiting, you may drop anchor and reach the dock by tender boat.

Transportation in Geiranger

There’s no public transportation in Geiranger to speak of; this is a small village, and while there is a local taxi company, you’d need to book a car in advance. You can also walk around the town. A convenient way to take in some of the best views is the Panorama Bus, a one-and-a-half hour bus ride that stops at Flydalsjuvet, for fantastic views down the fjord, and Eagle Bend, from where you can photograph the Seven Sisters waterfall. A second hop-on, hop-off bus departs the cruise terminal and stops at the Norwegian Fjord Centre, Westerås Farm, and Flydalsjuvet viewpoint.

Shopping Near the Geiranger Cruise Port

Since Geiranger is so small, it’s not hard to find the shops—just head to the main pedestrian street. Look out for local knitwear as well as troll figurines and pewter items. Cloudberry jam makes a great edible souvenir as you can’t find it in many places beyond Norway, as does the unusual brunost brown cheese. A great place to shop is Geiranger Sjokolade for homemade chocolate in unique flavors like cloudberry, as well as preserves in local berry flavors. For clothing, the shop at the Geiranger Skywalk has a good range of hats, gloves, scarves, and other knitwear.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

Norway’s currency is the Norwegian krone. You’ll find an ATM dispensing Norwegian krone at the supermarket in town. There is also a place to exchange currency in the Fjordbuda souvenir shop.

Norway does not have much of a tipping culture. Guides do not expect to be tipped (although they won’t be insulted if you do tip) and nor do restaurant staff. You could leave a cash tip on the table for good service, but 5% to 10% is the norm.

Russia-Ukraine war latest: Kyiv targets Moscow with largest ever drone attack as it uses US rockets in Kursk

LIVE – Updated at 16:38

Ukraine has targeted Moscow in what officials described as the largest drone attack on the city of the war so far .

Russian air defences destroyed at least 11 drones headed for Moscow and 45 in total across the country, Russian officials said.

It is not known how many were launched in total. “This is one of the largest attempts to attack Moscow using drones ever. We continue to monitor the situation,” Moscow mayor Sergei Sobyanin said.

Russian officials did not immediately report any damage or injuries from the overnight attack, while Ukraine is yet to comment.

It comes as Ukraine’s special forces claimed they had “destroyed” several bridges and pontoon crossings on the Seym River in Kursk using US-supplied rockets.

"Where do Russian pontoon bridges ‘disappear’ in the Kursk region? Operators ... accurately destroy them," Ukraine’s Special Operations Forces said on Telegram messenger.

The statement said U.S.-manufactured HIMARS rocket systems were used. It was the first official statement from Kyiv that Western weapons are part of the unprecedented offensive.

UN nuclear watchdog chief to visit Kursk nuclear plant at end of August, says Russia

Rafael Grossi, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), has confirmed he is ready to visit the Kursk nuclear power plant in Russia at the end of August, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Wednesday.

Russia’s Defence Ministry last week accused Ukraine of planning to attack the Kursk plant as part of its ongoing incursion into the Russian region, an assertion Kyiv denied.

“We expect that an understanding of the danger that Ukrainian provocations against Russian nuclear power plants represent will prompt the IAEA’s management to take concrete action to ensure the safety of nuclear power plants in Zaporizhzhia and Kursk,” Zakharova said at a weekly news briefing.

Why is Ukraine destroying bridges in Russia’s Kursk?

Ukraine has damaged or destroyed three bridges in the Russian region of Kursk as they attempt to consolidate positions gained during their ambitious cross-border assult and cut off supplies to Moscow’s troops.

The first bridge was destroyed in the village of Glushkovo, around eight miles west of Ukrainian troops inside of Russia, on Friday.

The second was destroyed on Saturday in the village of Zvannoye, a further five miles westward.

Putin ally Chemezov says West risks global war over Ukraine

A close ally of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin warned the US risked triggering a global war if it continued to “provoke” the conflict in Ukraine.

Sergei Chemezov, CEO of the Rostec corporation which supplies many of Russia’s arms for the war, said the world could be drawn into a mass conflict and Moscow was ready for confrontation.

“In a situation where the West, led by the United States, provokes war, we must be ready. The third year of the special operation is under way. Russia feels confident,” Mr Chemezov said.

“The further it goes, the greater the risk that the world will be drawn into a global conflict. It looks strange, but Western countries do not seem to understand just how fraught this is for them.”

Ukraine’s soldiers seek revenge against putin’s forces in kursk.

Ukrainian forces have damaged or destroyed three bridges in Russia’s Kursk region – aiming to cut crucial Russian supply lines in the latest chapter in Kyiv’s daring assault across the border, which the country’s president Volodymyr Zelensky says is achieving its military aims.

Ukraine’s troops know Russia will respond but want to take as much revenge against Vladimir Putin’s forces as they can. Soldiers from one of the brigades that spearheaded the offensive into Kursk have told  The Independent  how they laughed in disbelief and joy as they dug trenches inside Russia.

“It was an incredible feeling to realise that this time we were invading them and we laughed like madmen as we dug trenches on enemy land, Russian soil,” said a soldier with the codename Lyasha.

Ukraine says it destroyed 50 out of 69 Russian drones in overnight strike

Ukrainian forces destroyed 50 out of 69 attack drones launched by Russia during an overnight strike, Kyiv’s military said on Wednesday.

The air force said another 16 drones were likely downed by electronic warfare during the attack, which also included two ballistic and one cruise missiles. It said it shot down only the latter.

The military added that one drone had entered Ukraine from Belarus and another had returned to Russia.

Ukraine ratifies Rome Statute

Ukraine’s parliament voted to ratify the Rome Statute in a move set to pave the way for Kyiv to join the International Criminal Court.

In a Telegram post, Yaroslav Zhelezniak said 281 deputies had voted for the measure, a key requirement for Ukraine to eventually join the European Union.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) investigates and tries individuals for genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity and the crime of aggression.

Eastern ukrainian town under siege - footage.

A video published online has shown the devastation wrought up on the eastern Ukrainian town of Myrnohrad as Russian forces advance towards it.

The town, which sits next door to the city of Pokrovsk, has come under siege from Russian forces in recent months.

Moscow’s troops are around four miles from Myrnohrad and six from Pokrovsk, which is seen as a linchpin of Ukraine’s defence of the wider Donetsk region.

West African juntas write to UN over Ukraine's alleged rebel support

The juntas of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger have written to the United Nations Security Council to denounce Ukraine‘s alleged support of rebel groups in West Africa’s Sahel region, a copy of their letter showed.

Mali cut diplomatic ties with Ukraine at the start of the month over comments by a spokesperson for Ukraine‘s military intelligence agency about fighting in Mali’s north that killed Malian soldiers and Russian Wagner mercenaries in late July.

The military government of Niger followed suit days later in solidarity with its neighbour.

The dispute broke out after the Ukrainian military intelligence agency spokesperson said Malian rebels had received “necessary” information to conduct the July attack.

Tuareg rebels said they killed at least 84 Wagner mercenaries and 47 Malian soldiers over days of fierce fighting, potentially Wagner’s heaviest defeat since it stepped in two years ago to help Mali’s junta fight insurgent groups.

Mali and Niger accused Ukraine of supporting “international terrorism”.

Ukraine has repeatedly called the allegations groundless and untrue. A Tuareg rebel alliance has also said it did not receive any Ukrainian support.

Footage shows destruction of Russian pontoon crossings in Kursk

Footage released by Ukraine’s special forces has shown the systematic targeting of Russian bridges, pontoon crossings and Moscow’s engineering units responsible for their construction in the Kursk region.

“The video shows the effective impressions of [special forces] operators of enemy engineering equipment in the Kursk region, as well as the detection and correction of Hymars fire on bridges and pontoon crossings,” they wrote on their Telegram channel.

Ukrainian forces have destroyed three permanent bridges over the Seym River in Kursk over the past six days, as well as an unknown number of pontoon crossings built by the Russians to replace the bridges.

Russian troops south of the Seym in Kursk, to the west of Ukrainian forces in the Russian region, are reliant on these bridges and crossings for vital supplies.

Russia's Medvedev says there will no talks with Ukraine after Kursk incursion

Ukraine‘s incursion into Russia’s Kursk region means there will be no talks between Moscow and Kyiv until Ukraine is completely defeated on the battlefield, Dmitry Medvedev, deputy head of Russia’s Security Council, has said.

“The casual chit-chat of self-proclaimed intermediaries on the virtuous subject of peace has ceased. Even if they cannot say it out loud, everyone recognises the reality of the situation,” Medvedev, who wrote on his official account on the Telegram messaging app.

“They understand that there will be NO NEGOTIATIONS UNTIL THE ENEMY IS COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY DESTROYED!”

Medvedev, who has styled himself as one of the Kremlin’s toughest anti-Western hawks, said that the “premature and unnecessary peace” talks that had previously been suggested “had vague prospects and no tangible outcomes.”

The Russian politician, who assumed the presidency from 2008 to 2012 between Vladimir Putin’s first and second stints as leader, has a habit of posting expletive-laden, brazen messages on social media.

Satellite image shows smoke in Kursk region on Seym River

Satellite images have shown smoke rising in the air in the Kursk region near the Seym River, just a day after Ukrainian forces reportedly bombed another crossing.

The image, taken on Tuesday, shows fires near the village of Krasnooktyabrskoe, located just outside the area of Ukrainian control in the Kursk region.

Since last Friday, Kyiv’s troops have destroyed three permanent bridges over the Seym and reportedly one pontoon crossing as well in an attempt to sever supply lines to the Russian forces south of the river.

Ukraine says it struck S-300 missile system in Russia's Rostov region

Ukraine‘s military has claimed to have struck an S-300 anti-aircraft missile system based in Russia’s southern Rostov region overnight.

Kyiv’s General Staff said the attack took place near the settlement of Novoshakhtinsk, and that S-300s had been used to attack civilian infrastructure in Ukraine.

“Explosions were observed at specified targeting points,” the General Staff said in a statement. “The accuracy of the strike is being assessed.”

Rostov governor Vasily Golubev said air defence forces had destroyed a Ukraine-launched missile over his region, but Russia’s defence ministry made no mention of the incident in its daily statement on destroyed air weapons.

We have some of the latest photos from the war in Ukraine

Good morning.

Below we have some of the latest pictures concerning the war in Ukraine.

Ukraine has damaged or destroyed three bridges in the Russian region of Kursk as they attempt to consolidate positions gained during their ambitious cross-border assult and cut off supplies to Moscow’s troops.

The first bridge was destroyed in the village of Glushkovo, around eight miles west of Ukrainian troops inside of Russia , on Friday.

The second was destroyed on Saturday in the village of Zvannoye, a further five miles westward. The third bridge reportedly destroyed on Sunday night is in the village of Karyzh, a further four miles westward.

All three bridges run over the Seym river that runs through the Kursk region. If Ukraine confirms the destruction of the third bridge, that would mean that Russian forces are now reliant on receiving military equipment via a makeshift pontoon bridge, according to analysts.

The purpose of targeting these bridges is to sever Russian supply lines and trap Moscow’s troops.

Russia says it destroyed 45 Ukraine-launched drones overnight

Russia’s air defence units destroyed 45 drones that Ukraine launched overnight targeting Moscow and several other regions, Russia’s defence ministry said today.

Of these, 11 of the drones were destroyed over the Moscow region, 23 over the border Bryansk region, six over the Belgorod region, three over the Kaluga region and two over the Kursk region, the ministry said in a statement.

Putin makes surprise trip to Chechnya for first time in 13 years

Russian president Vladimir Putin made an unscheduled trip to Chechnya , a mainly Muslim republic within the Russian Federation, his first visit in nearly 13 years, as Ukraine ‘s stunning cross-border incursion into western Russia entered its third week.

Putin was greeted by Chechnya’s self-styled strongman leader Ramzan Kadyrov , before visiting a special forces academy bearing his own name and speaking with volunteer fighters who train there prior to being deployed in Ukraine.

Putin praised the volunteers and said that as long as Russia has men like them, it will be “invincible,” according to reports by Russian state agencies.

Headed for Kyiv, Modi to discuss resolution of Ukraine conflict

India prime minister Narendra Modi said he will “share perspectives” on the peaceful resolution of the conflict between Ukraine and Russia during his visit to Kyiv this week.

Mr Modi departed for Poland today and will visit Kyiv on Friday, a first visit to Ukraine by an Indian prime minister since diplomatic relations were established 30 years ago.

“As a friend and partner, we hope for an early return of peace and stability in the region,” Mr Modi said in a statement before his departure, without using the term “war” or “invasion”.

India has presented itself as a neutral party to war, repeatedly urging Ukraine and Russia to use dialogue and diplomacy to resolve their differences without condemning Putin’s invasion. Both Ukraine and its Western allies have urged Modi to help in isolating Russia on the world stage for its actions, but New Delhi has rebuffed these calls.

Mr Modi’s two-day visit to Russia last month coincided with a lethal strike on a children’s hospital in Kyiv, following which he told Putin that the death of innocent children was painful and terrifying and urged resolution of the conflict.

The Ukrainian government has also pitched for India to help rebuild the country’s war-torn economy.

Mr Modi met Volodymyr Zelensky on the sidelines of the Group of Seven summit in Italy last month.

Mapped: Ukraine hits Kursk bridges

Now russia claims nato helped kyiv prepare for kursk incursion.

Russia believes Ukraine’s incursion into its Kursk region was prepared with intelligence from the United States, Britain and Poland, the newspaper Izvestia reported today, citing Russia’s foreign intelligence agency.

“The Ukrainian Armed Forces operation in the Kursk region was prepared with the participation of the US, UK and Polish intelligence services,” Izvestia cited the Foreign Intelligence Service as saying, who claimed to have “reliable information” but did not provide evidence to back their claims.

It also claimed that the units involved underwent combat coordination in training centres in the UK and Germany.

Ukraine’s Western allies have issued a number of statements flatly denying any involvement in the Kursk incursion.

Last week, the White House said Ukraine did not provide advance notice of the operation. White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre, speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, said Washington had no involvement. “We had nothing to do with this,” she said.

“We have no involvement. We’ll continue to have conversations with the Ukrainians about their approach, but it is really for them to speak to,” she added.

Mapped: Russian soldiers risk becoming trapped

Russian sources confirm 3 bridges over russia’s seym river either destroyed or damaged.

Ukrainian forces have either destroyed or damaged all three of the bridges over the Seym River in western Russia, according to Russian sources, as Kyiv’s incursion into western Russia entered its third week yesterday.

A Russian military investigator confirmed that Ukraine had “totally destroyed” one bridge and damaged two others in the area. The full extent of the damage remained unclear.“As a result of targeted shelling with the use of rocket and artillery weapons against residential buildings and civilian infrastructure in the Karyzh village... a third bridge over the Seym River was damaged,” the unnamed representative for Russia’s Investigative Committee said in a video published on the Telegram channel of Russian state TV anchor Vladimir Solovyov.Russian military bloggers Vladimir Romanov and Yuri Podolyaka and several high-profile pro-war Telegram channels in Russia also claimed that the third bridge had been targeted and damaged. Podolyaka’s post was shared by Roman Alekhin, an advisor to Kursk’s acting regional governor.

Ukraine’s attacks on the three bridges over the Seym River in Kursk could potentially trap Russian forces between the river, the Ukrainian advance and the Ukrainian border. Already they appear to be slowing down Russia’s response to the Kursk incursion, which Ukraine launched on 6 August.

Putin makes a surprise trip to Chechnya

Vladimir Putin made an unscheduled trip to Chechnya, a mainly Muslim republic within the Russian Federation, his first visit in nearly 13 years, as Ukraine’s stunning cross-border incursion into western Russia entered its third week.

Putin was greeted by Chechnya’s self-styled strongman leader Ramzan Kadyrov, before visiting a special forces academy bearing his own name and speaking with volunteer fighters who train there prior to being deployed in Ukraine.

The Russian president praised the volunteers and said that as long as Russia has men like them, it will be “invincible,” according to reports by Russian state agencies.

Kadyrov said in a post on his official Telegram channels that more than 47,000 fighters, including volunteers, have trained at the facility since Moscow began what it calls its “special military operation” in Ukraine.

Fighters from Chechnya, whose bid for independence after the Soviet Union’s collapse led to years of war with Russian government forces, are participating on both sides of the conflict in Ukraine.

At least 11 Ukrainian drones flying towards Moscow were destroyed as Ukraine launched one of the largest ever drone attacks on the Russian capital this morning, the city’s mayor said.

Some of the drones were destroyed over the city of Podolsk, mayor Sergei Sobyanin said. The city in the Moscow region is some 38 km (24 miles) south of the Kremlin.

“The air defence systems of the defence ministry continue to repel enemy UAV (unmanned aerial vehicles) attacks,” Sobyanin said on his Telegram channel at 4.43 am (0143 GMT). “This is one of the largest attempts to attack Moscow using drones ever. We continue to monitor the situation,” he added.

He said that according to preliminary information, there were no injuries or damage in the aftermath of the attacks.

Ukraine has often launched one or two drones targeting Moscow in recent months, causing no substantial damage.

The Wednesday attack, however, seems to have been larger than a May 2023 attack when at least eight drones were destroyed over the capital in an attack president Vladimir Putin said was Kyiv’s attempt to scare and provoke Russia.

Russian officials rarely disclose the full size of the attacks, reporting only drones that its air defence units destroy.

Ukraine has destroyed or damaged all three bridges over Russia's Seym River, Russian sources say

Ukrainian forces have either destroyed or damaged all three of the bridges over the Seym River in western Russia, according to Russian sources, as Kyiv’s incursion into western Russia entered its third week.

Kyiv’s incursion into Russia’s Kursk region is changing the trajectory of the war and boosting morale among Ukraine‘s war-weary population, though the ultimate outcome of the incursion — the first attack on Russia since World War II — remains impossible to predict.

Even as Ukraine hails its success on Russian territory, the Russian push in eastern Ukraine is poised to claim another key center, the city of Pokrovsk.

Ukraine‘s attacks on the three bridges over the Seym River in Kursk could potentially trap Russian forces between the river, the Ukrainian advance and the Ukrainian border. Already they appear to be slowing down Russia’s response to the Kursk incursion, which Ukraine launched on 6 August.

A Russian military investigator confirmed Monday that Ukraine had “totally destroyed” one bridge and damaged two others in the area. The full extent of the damage remained unclear.

Ukraine adopts 'historic' law to ban russia-linked minority church.

Ukrainian lawmakers passed a law envisaging a ban on the activities of a Russia-linked branch of the Orthodox church, paving the way for a historic rupture with an institution that Kyiv has accused of complicity in Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

A majority of Ukrainians are Orthodox Christians but the faith is split into one branch traditionally tied to the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) and an independent church, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, recognised by the world Orthodox hierarchy since 2019.

Ukrainian leaders have accused the Moscow-linked UOC of abetting Russia’s 30-month-old war on Ukraine by spreading pro-Russian propaganda and housing spies.

The bill passed by 265 lawmakers bans the Russian Orthodox Church on Ukrainian territory and said that a government commission will assemble a list of “affiliated” organisations whose activities are not allowed. The list is expected to target the UOC specifically.

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy hailed the vote as a step to strengthen Ukraine‘s “spiritual independence”.

Lawmaker Iryna Herashchenko said it was the issue of national security.

“This is a historic vote. Parliament approved a legislation which bans a branch of the aggressor country in Ukraine,” she wrote on Telegram.

Russia's FSB detains scientist on suspicion of treason

Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) has detained a scientist in Moscow on suspicion of treason, it said in a statement.

The FSB did not name the scientist, who it said had carried out distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks on critical infrastructure on behalf of Ukrainian security services.

The domestic security agency said that the scientist had also sent money to the Ukrainian military, as well as gathering information on the Russian armed forces. The suspect had confessed, it said.

It was not immediately clear when the arrest was made. Russian media outlets published what they said was footage of the scientist’s detention.

The video, which shows a man arrested in a snow-covered city, suggested that the scientist may have been detained some time ago.

Ostorozhno Novosti, a Telegram channel that covers Russian politics, identified the scientist as Artyom Khoroshilov, a physicist who state news agency RIA previously reported was arrested on suspicion of staging DDoS attacks in December 2023.
