Adventurous is the New Pretty: 20 Female Travel Bloggers Redefining Beauty (Photos)

A tribute to the top female travel bloggers.

She’s the woman who you invite somewhere and will actually go.

Unless of course she can’t, only because she’s on her way to another adventure.

She’s the woman who has been enough places to treat everyone with kindness.

But probably did so before her first road trip.

She’s the woman who isn’t always unafraid, but willing to face her fears.

She’s the woman who shares the traveler spirit, even when she isn’t going anywhere. But who are we joking — she  is  going everywhere, both physically and figuratively.

She’s compassionate, strong-willed, polite but unconventional, and redefines pretty with an adventurous heart.

In lieu of International Woman’s Day this week, I would like bring your attention to several women pushing the boundaries of business, media, culture and adventure.

You might know them as the top female travel bloggers; but they are doing so much more than jumping out of airplanes.

It struck me when browsing through a post showcasing a new “normal” Barbie doll  how much time and money the media spends telling us that our fat, our acne, our scars, our physical “imperfections” are still beautiful. Hello, you’re still focusing on what’s on the outside, and not who’s getting out there.

I guess I’ve never worried that I’m too short (5 ‘1 1/2 + heels), or too brunette, or too whatever to be beautiful. This is mostly because I’ve assumed that my bubbly personality, strengths in leadership, and a heart bigger than my butt is what makes me attractive. I don’t feel intimidated by women who look Photoshopped because I’m too busy being inspired by women who climb mountains, start businesses, and are billboard examples of how to treat others.

I feel pretty when I think about who I am and what I’ve done, not what I look like.

I am not sure what makes you feel “pretty,” but when I look at these women, I think pretty awesome.

When people say that travel is too expensive, I direct them to legends Anna and Sabrina, who have both travelled full-time with an income less than $10,000 a year before building their blogs into a budget travelers’ paradise.

Well, it is a big deal. Developing a community on social media, sharpening your photography skills, and giving up a traditional job to see the world isn’t easy (I would know — it’s actually miserably difficult). Alison Teal was a “Tarzan Child” raised in the wild by award-winning National Geographic photographers. She has been deemed “The Oprah of Adventure,” yet holds degrees from USC and UC Berkley. A pioneer in sustainability, the avid surfer also advocates for  Go Green.   Her surfboards are “made from soy based sustainable products, recycled coffee cups, and other Styrofoam.” If that wasn’t cool enough, she actually sells clothing (yoga pants, bikinis, and shirts) made from recycled water bottles! Meet the 13-Year-Old Girl Who Travels the World

In my first ever reader survey, I asked what you would change about the blog, if anything. I asked for honesty, promised I could take it, and one answer stood out to me in particular:

“Well you did ask.

I do find it to be a little bit of a hypocritical cop out when you write under your guest blogging segment in Part 4 of “ So You Want To Be A Travel Blogger ” [that you recommend guest blogging but don’t allow others to post on your blog]. Guest blogging helped you at the beginning of your journey but you refuse to help other bloggers … I think the right guest posts would in no way detract from your story. To the contrary, it would highlight the richness of your journey and gain you more subscribers than you would ever lose. ”

I realized she was completely right. I was being hypocritical and unfair. So I emailed her and invited her to guest post.

It turns out that the girl on the other side of the computer is a 13-year-old Australian, Réka Kaponay, who has been traveling full time since she was only 10, yet she comes across with the maturity and skill level of a 20-something highly educated woman in her correspondence and writing.

I was instantly fascinated by her story and asked if she would be willing to share it with you. The following are the words of a girl who has been traveling the world for the past three years:

How did this all begin? 

Réka: I turned 11 in L.A. with my twin brother, Lalika, only a week after we left Australia, celebrating with one of our close family friends with a trip to the movies and the California Pizza Kitchen (CPK). To me, at the time, this was an experience to behold. Little did I know that what was waiting just around the corner was the real beginning of my journey in life, and a learning experience that I cannot begin to place a value on.

When we first started traveling it felt like an extended vacation, but as we went further into the USA, eventually visiting 31 of the 50 states, and later into South America, it became our journey of giving through the EnergeticXChange project – a project in the sharing/gift economy that my parents dreamed up. The idea was that for every need on the planet, there had to be an offering somewhere in the world that would meet that need. To facilitate the connection of these needs they developed a website that help people find matches. Thus, our journey began.

What is the best part about traveling?

Réka: Now we’ve traveled to 23 countries on six continents, but when you go beyond the statistics, I realise our journey is made up of the people we have encountered along the way. For me, this is how the journey is connected – in the images that live in my mind, and it is what defines the character and experiences of the places we visited. The one that immediately jumps to mind is what some might call a chance encounter (though we have learned throughout our journey, that there is no such thing).

We were picnicking with our camper parked in a small forest park in the outskirt suburbs of Raleigh, North Carolina on a balmy Saturday afternoon. Nearby, a young couple was walking on the path. My mother greeted them and they began to converse. The casual conversation lasted about an hour, resulting in an invitation for us to come and stay with them in their home, which later resulted in another invite to visit their parents on their family farm in Pennsylvania. When we arrived at the farm, Lalika and I hit the jackpot of new friends. It was a convergence of summer vacation and grandchildren, 14 in all, and we made fast friends.

It was as if we had always known each other, and while we had come from opposite sides of the planet, we immediately found the common ground that children always seem to find. and still rates as one of the experiences of a lifetime for me!

The adventures we packed into those seven days would be enough for a blog on its own and a cultural exchange program to boot. In fact, friendship is one of the treasures I hold deepest to my heart on our journey.

Is it ever difficult for you?

Réka: There is a massive downside to these experiences, and that is having to say goodbye. There is just no easy way to describe this feeling, and while technology enables us to keep in touch, not knowing when we will see each other again takes a piece of my heart and puts its on hold and sometimes leaves me a little empty, even lonely.

It reinforces for me just how important real human physical connections are, and how technology while empowering us on so many levels, is also distancing us from this closeness too. On friendship, I am not entirely sure, but I feel there is an intensive nature and authenticity made from these travel friendships that somehow transcends the experience of the friendships that I have back in Australia. It doesn’t make those friendships any less valuable to me; it is just a different experience of friendship that only the traveler can know.

What has traveling taught you?

Réka: Prior to leaving for our journey, our parents had already taken Lalika and I out of the schooling system, registering us as home learners. I was already well advanced as a reader and writer and my brother in Math, both of us having taken additional English and Maths courses through an after school program.

For me learning is a privilege, a constant interest, and the world provides me with the mother of all learning experiences that I could ever want. We learn together as a family, sharing everything that we learn which makes us richer for the experience of being a family.  I speak three languages now, Spanish being the most recent. I am also currently seeking an agent for my first full-length novel ‘ Dawn of The Guardian ’ an adventure tale, experienced through the eyes and perspective of a two-year-old Patterdale Terrier, living in the heart of Andalusia Spain, trying to prevent the forces of the dream world from keeping us asleep. (Kristin’s note: Wha? Seriously? She’s writing a book too?!)

Throughout our journey, I have participated in many experiences of learning, including formal, indigenous (Story Telling), non-traditional and even innovative methods. While I am 13, nearly 14, whether it be from my experience of learning about ancient civilizations by standing directly on the pilgrims’ path on the Nazca Lines, or living with the Descendants of the Incas , or through what I have learned ‘formally’, I feel that by traveling, I have experienced enough methods of learning to be confident that I will be able to contribute to the world in a meaningful manner, and this is what is important to me. I will never stop learning as long as I live, and I can attribute this directly to the experience of traveling.

How are you managing to keep going?

Réka: Traveling has now evolved for us into a combined family project and in working together to bring our projects to fruition. For me, this means continuing to learn and share my experiences and observations of traveling through my blog. It also means finding an agent and publisher, or building enough of a readership, to self-publish my novel.

However, it also means us working together as a family on a collective project to give this wealth of knowledge that we have accumulated to other families. We want other families to know that they can travel without having to wait forever and without having to mortgage the futures of their children. We want to do this by creating a place , where we can share our experiences and the aggregated experiences of a bunch of families who are living and giving in a similar way to us.

We would like to demonstrate to people that you don’t have to be vagabonds or millionaires to travel long-term together as a family and that there is a boundless wealth of experience to gain from this way of living.

To summarize, traveling for me is now a way of creating a life, as opposed to just making a living. I mean that, through traveling, I am learning all the practical things that will not only support me, but also sustain me in my journey in this life and still have enough to give to others! This is what traveling with my family has gifted me with – something that I could not have otherwise hoped to achieve by just living in the suburbs back home.

I cannot say that I will always keep traveling, as I am constantly learning and growing from the experience, with my feelings changing all the time. What I can say right now is that I cannot see an end in sight. There is just too much out there to experience and share with the world for me to stay in just one place for too long.

I love this. Cannot believe she is only 13. I was quite a feisty 13-year old myself – everyone thought I looked and seemed like 18. Yet, I surely did not have the maturity that this girl has. Really impressed!!

I would love to have been able to experience all those things when I was a young teen. She definitely sounds more mature than her young 13 years. It’s probably because she’s been able to deal with people and learn to talk to people from her travels.

The short version

Once upon a time there was a young woman who was told by society that in order to lead a fulfilling life she had to graduate college, get a 9-to-5 job and live a settled life with two weeks vacation per year (because obviously if you want anymore than that you’re just immature, selfish and lazy. Duh.)  

Despite resistance from loved ones, she decided to go the “immature” route, waving goodbye to her short stint in corporate America, and starting a business called Jessie on a Journey that allowed her to get paid to be creative, be her own boss and travel however much or little she pleased. She traded suits for suitcases, and her “office” is typically the nearest coffee shop or an airplane tray table. She lives happily ever after. The end.  

The Longer Version

Have you ever felt like the “right path” was the “wrong path” for you?

Yeah, I’ve been there.

Here’s the skinny: I was born and raised in New York — where I am also a certified sightseeing guide — and grew up traveling, mostly Caribbean cruises and North American road trips.

In 2010 I received my BA/MA in Communication & Rhetoric from the State University at Albany in New York, with the goal of getting into non-profit communications. By the time I graduated I had already had some inspiring travel experiences — studying in Australia, backpacking Europe solo, doing a homestay in Ghana, hiking my way through China and teaching English in Thailand.

You probably saw this coming, but I soon realized I wouldn’t be able to give up the complete freedom to travel. My travel experiences were what made me feel like I was truly living.

When I finally got a “real job” they wouldn’t let me have any time off for travel until I had been there for six months. And even when I got the time off, it was only two weeks for the whole year.   I loved slow travel and really spending time in a place to get to know it, and knew in my heart the job situation was not going to work. I couldn’t stop thinking about how alive travel made me feel and how stagnant I felt working in an office. I was on someone else’s schedule following someone else’s rules; I wanted to live my best life and do things my way.

When I quit, my friends and family of course did not approve, but travel was something I felt really strongly about. I decided I didn’t care what they thought. If they loved me they would accept my choice.  

I didn’t want to be one of those people that did the same thing everyday and lived a similar life to everyone else. I wanted to live my life.

So I started waitressing full-time until I could come up with a plan, which allowed me to work overtime while I was home to pay off loans and bills, but also request off freely when the travel bug would hit.

Then one day I stumbled upon a travel writing class (funny enough, I teach a few myself now ) and signed up. I loved writing and loved travel. Meeting the other students and alumni and reading blogs, I realized it was possible — as in real-life-this-isn’t-made-up — to combine my passions and make a living doing what I loved.  

Today I split my time at home in NYC and on the road. And even though I travel somewhere almost every month — mainly on my own — I still have a bucket list and things that make me nervous. But once you take one step in the direction of your dreams you’ll be able to take another.

Life is an adventure. I want to experience it to the fullest.   And I want you to, too!

I see too many of my friends and family working jobs they’re unhappy in and living their lives in a way that doesn’t completely fulfill them. Even if you’re not in a position to take travel to the full-time level, it is still possible to enrich your life by exploring the world.

Traveling solo as a woman is one of the best things that I’ve ever done for myself. It’s thrilling, empowering, sometimes scary but yet absolutely wonderful, all at the same time. When you’re traveling on your own, you are the only one in charge. You call all of the shots, for the better or the worse. But one thing I promise you is that solo female travel will change your life. Traveling solo will help you to grow in so many ways, and is truly an experience that everyone should have at least once in their lifetime. I’ve put together a list of the top solo female travel bloggers that you need to be following.

Anna Kloots of @annakloots

First solo trip or favorite solo travel memory.

My first solo trip was to Rome! I was studying abroad in Paris, and I went to Florence to visit a friend who was studying there. I took the train for a “day trip” and had an incredible day taking in all the sights. But I got confused at the train station, and ended up missing the last one back! I was panicked. This was a time before iPhones, I spoke no Italian, and I was so scared! I panicked a little in the train station, but then I realized – I’m in ROME! 

I went into the bookstore at the station, and found a hotel nearby to walk to. Thankfully they had a room for the night and a toothbrush for me! I spent the rest of the night walking around Rome solo, taking in how beautiful the city looked at night. I got an amazing pizza, and my third (yep, third!) cone of gelato, and then went to sleep, wondering why I hadn’t planned to do this all along! I’ve never been afraid of solo travel since.

Favorite solo travel destination?

Paris, of course, but any European city really. I think there is so much to see and do, and so much life all around that you don’t miss having a companion! I love being able to soak it all up as a solo female travel blogger, and take advantage of spending every second exactly the way I want.

Top tip for other solo female travelers (or aspiring solo female travelers)?

Not to wait; book the trip. So many people are “waiting” for the perfect person, or reason or moment to take the trip they’ve been wanting to take.You don’t have to wait. The perfect person is YOU, the perfect reason is your desire, and the perfect moment is NOW.

The number one item you never travel without? And why? 

I’ve never traveled without my journal. I write down everything, I glue in ticket stubs, I make notes and drawings. They become like little scrapbooks and time capsules for me! I have one from every trip I’ve ever taken.

One of my favorite solo female travel memories was on my first trip to Scotland. Scotland has been on my “bucket list” for several years and I always felt a strong pull to visit. My first time in Edinburgh I can recall walking down Princess Street and hearing bagpipes being played in the distance and looking at the Scott Monument ahead of me. Between the sounds, the architecture and the fact that I, alone, made my dream of visiting Scotland a reality, it made me begin to cry tears of joy while walking down the street. I was so grateful for that moment and for the courage I had for taking on this adventure by myself.

My favorite solo travel destination is Edinburgh, Scotland. I find Edinburgh to be very solo travel friendly, especially for females. It is very easy to navigate through the city, and there are many options available for transportation. Edinburgh is full of history, and incredible architecture, but it also has so many terrific restaurants and shops. I highly recommend visiting Edinburgh during December, or for Hogmanay, so you can experience the enchanting Christmas Market and all of the Hogmanay festivities.

My top tip for solo female travelers for safety, is to stay accountable with family and/or friends. Provide an itinerary of your flight information, the name of the car service picking you up from the airport, where you’re staying, the name of the tour companies you book with, and any other information you can provide. Check in throughout the day or at least, the end of the day, to let them know you are safe. I personally like to utilize the “share my location” feature on my iPhone to allow my family to track my movement while traveling solo. 

The number one item I will never travel without is my travel clothing steamer.  I will always make room to fit my travel steamer into my bag. I personally haven’t discovered a way to fold clothes to make them not wrinkle when packed, and I am not a fan of ironing, so a travel steamer always comes in handy.

I took my first domestic solo trip to San Francisco and my first international solo trip to Costa Rica. These trips truly ignited my passion for solo travel and it made me aware of just how magical solo female travel could be. 

My favorite solo travel destination is Paris! I’ve made lifelong local friends during my trips to Paris, which keeps me returning every year to discover the city in a new way.

I truly advise solo female travelers to embrace spontaneity. You don’t have to make compromises with your time or interests, so this is the perfect time to ‘do you’! When it comes to safety, do your research ahead of time, share your location with loved ones, carry yourself with confidence, know your limits, and pay what you need for safety.

The number one item you never travel without? And why?

Aside from my phone, I always rock my Birkenstocks. They’re extremely comfortable and they’re the best shoe for everyday wear.

My first solo trip is also my favorite solo travel memory. I was doing a two week tour around Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore. On the plane to Bangkok, I remember so clearly how I felt: I had this overwhelming feeling of liberation and a huge grin on my face. I hadn’t even got there yet, but sitting on that plane by myself heading to a place I’d never been felt like a real sense of achievement.

To this day, that trip is still one of my best travel experiences. I met the most amazing group of people who I still regularly chat to, even though many of them live on the other side of the world. For me, it was this first solo travel trip that made me realise how incredible solo travel can be. The possibilities it unlocks are endless and the excitement it brings is unbeatable.

Oh this is difficult because there are so many amazing solo travel destinations! It’s an obvious one but I really fell in love with Thailand. Maybe because it was my first solo trip, but also because the people are so incredibly friendly. I felt welcomed from the moment I set foot in Bangkok. I’ll never forget the kindness of the locals, who made me feel at home and at ease.

My top tip – especially for aspiring solo female travelers – is not to be scaremongered when it comes to traveling alone as a woman. There are so many unhelpful click-bait articles out there about the dangers of solo female travel. Of course safety is a very important consideration – I’m not for one second suggesting that it should be overlooked. But we need to stop the scaremongering that so often comes hand in hand with it. Society loves to tell women that we shouldn’t do things. Don’t walk alone at night, don’t get too drunk, don’t wear that, don’t go there – it goes on. It’s exhausting and unnecessary. Educate yourself on the safety elements of solo female travel but then immerse yourself in the amazing benefits and positive experiences of other women. I’m on a mission to inspire women across the world to travel with confidence!

It has to be my power bank! Personally for me, I feel more confident traveling alone when I know that my mobile phone is fully charged and accessible. As well as being helpful for getting in touch with people if I need to, it also serves multiple other functions.

One of my biggest weaknesses is navigation. I have a pretty poor sense of direction, so Google Maps is my best friend when traveling. Although I always take my camera, I love having my phone on hand to snap quick pictures. Again, this would not be possible with a dead battery, so my power bank is a real lifesaver!

My first solo trip was straight out of university in 2016. I found a cheap one-way ticket to Europe so I bought it that same night with no plans. That was probably my best decision; it changed a lot in the way I travel but also in what I wanted to do career wise and even the way I appreciated myself and my own company! I ended up spending 8 months in Europe with no solid plans and going with the flow depending on where I wanted to go, how the weather turned out, who I met along the way, or whatever cheap ticket I found!

Most recently it has to be Tulum ! I took my first trip there after the new years in 2019 and somehow ended up returning and spending half of the year there working remotely. Tulum has so much to offer outside of how tourists normally experience it within a week’s vacation! It’s a magical little corner of Mexico.

It can be scary but don’t overthink it! It’ll help you grow so much. To ease off the stress you can plan out major aspects but leave room or be open to new experiences because you WILL meet lots of people along the way. The times I have ditched my plans for new ones with new friends have always left positive memories! Safety wise – be conscious of your surroundings and never show you are lost (I always download maps offline and if I’m lost I’ll stop and go off to the side or go into a shop to check the maps!)

Travel insurance. Haha! Not as adventurous of a response but I don’t mess with safety and security when it comes to this. It costs so little even when I’ve used it internationally for months at a time and has saved me thousands of dollars when things go downhill. I am the most rock solid person in terms of health but even then, you just never know!

I began solo traveling at age 27 in 2018, when I caught my one-way flight to Tokyo. After backpacking through Asia , I’ve been on Working Holiday Visas in Australia and now New Zealand. Working full-time in another country is a great way to slow travel and experience a new environment, without breaking the bank. 

My favorite solo travel destination so far is probably Java in Indonesia, though I also have a soft spot for Malaysia. Java just had so many amazing gems – Mount Bromo, Ijen, Karimunjawa, Borobudur… seriously, it was an adventure.

My top tip for solo female travelers is probably to plan your trip around your personal needs, and not just what other people do. This more goes for people who are introverts or who deal with health issues (whether that means physical or mental health issues). I learned the hard way that I do need rest days and time to deal with burnout. Listen to your body and mind and remember this is YOUR trip, so do what makes you feel happy and comfortable. 

And the items I never travel without are my earphones (with pre-downloaded music) and my comfortable sleep mask – travelling can be overstimulating and I love that these items can help me zone out! I’d love to travel with a Kindle in the future too.

I took my first solo trip when I was living in France to Lille. It was close and also a real hub for international travellers coming to France from the Netherlands, Belgium and the UK. All these factors made me feel a bit more safe and secure. I went close to Christmas so I was able to explore the Christmas market, eat some local delicacies and enjoy their festive ferris wheel! I only got one full photo of myself though as I was too scared to ask people to take a picture of me all the time.

I really loved travelling around Bali solo. There’s a real digital nomad/expat community there so everyone in my hostel and in town were so open to making friends. The locals were also really kind to me, and I had a good balance between the buzzing beach clubs in the south of the island and the quiet natural wonders in the north.

Always have a book! Whether it be a notepad to journal all the things you learn about yourself, or a book to feel less awkward dining out alone – it will definitely come in handy.

I always travel with two bank cards. Always. Because I’ve lost bank cards abroad SO many times! These things happen.

She has interestingly turned The Blonde Abroad —which features tons of resources for the solo female traveler—from a personal travel diary into one of her biggest sources of income.

Kiersten’s blog focuses on luxury travel tips but occasionally dabbles in backpacking and travel photography. Her content is more guide-like and less like a memoir, and is filled with golden tips in various subjects such as staying healthy while traveling, places to see in various destinations, and cuisines worth trying at every location she has been to. Her blog post 20 Trips to Take in Your 20s is like a map of incredible destinations that every first-time traveler should absolutely visit in their lifetime.

#2 Ashley Abroad: Solo Female Travel & Travel Tips

From backpacking through Europe, India, and Asia for a whole year to occasionally burying herself in books, Ashley’s interests are diverse. However, her love for traveling has equipped her with essential experience and expansive knowledge in the nuances of being a solo female traveler.

Like a lot of other travel bloggers Kate quit her job in 2010 at the age of 26  and set off on a world of Adventure and hasn’t looked back. She has traveled everywhere from Australia to Vietnam and has covered almost 60 different countries.

Her Blog Adventurous Kate include great articles, accommodation advise and other fantastic reviews,  there is also a great travel resources page offering links to Cheap Flights, Accommodation, Insurance and Travel Gear. Kate is a full time blogger who regularly posts great articles including Where to Stay in Barcelona — Best Neighborhoods and Accommodation .

The website design isn’t as good as some of the other travel blogs and looks like it could do with a refresh however the content is amazing, packed full of great information and fantastic colorful photography. Kate has a great social media following including over 50K followers on Facebook as well as a great following on Twitter, Youtube, Linked In and Google +

The Adventurous Kate blog is one of our favorite solo travel blogs and the articles continue to be interesting and packed full of information.

#6 The Boutique Adventurer

The Boutique Adventurer is the the brainchild of Amanda O’Brien, an Aussie currently living in London who is a frequent traveler while also enjoying a little luxury in her life. This fantastic travel blog includes great articles on destinations from Australia to Tunisia and everywhere in between.

Amanda has visited over 70 countries and she likes to travel with friends, families as well as solo which is unusual for travel blogs who normally only cover 1 niche area.  Some The articles covered on this blog include Iceland Travel Tips: Top 10 Things You Need to Know which makes me want to visit Iceland even more. We also loved the Namibia Self Drive: 10 night itinerary that will give you wanderlust for your next African adventure

The Boutique Adventurer also includes some great travel tips, and reviews of some business class airlines and luxury hotels. There are also some good tips for solo travelers including Holidays for One: Best Organised Tours for Single Travel .

The website design looks good without getting to cluttered which is an issue with some other blog design. Amanda has a great following on most of the social media sites including Facebook and Twitter. If you love to trek during the day while also enjoying the night time creature comforts then this is a great blog to follow.

#7 Girl about the Globe: Making Solo Travel Easier

Lisa has travelled to to 131 countries and 101 of these solo with the aim of inspiring you to solo travel the world. Girl about the Globe is an award winning solo female travel blog that donates to organisations protecting vulnerable girls about the globe.

#8 The Shooting Star: Just a girl who travels

Shivya Nath’s is a story of fulfilling childhood curiosities and ambitions. Ever since quitting her corporate job 6 years ago, she has been on the road searching for new adventures and regaling her readers with all of her wonderful experiences. She leads a fully nomadic lifestyle and works from the road to support her soul’s desire to backpack through every country in the world.

From insightful travel guides to lucid introductions into the life of a full-time solo female traveler, her blog is as resourceful as it is entertaining to read for anyone curious about a life on the road. She captures the essence of every location she visits with beautifully written posts about their lesser-known aspects, making the reader more intrigued about sharing her experiences. Her blog also contains a very helpful Responsible Travel section that the solo female traveler will find very useful in the course of her adventures.

#9 A Dangerous Business: Female Travel Blog

Amanda’s memoirs of the magical time she’s spent on the road belie her small town origins. An avid J.R.R. Tolkien fan (which is where she got the inspiration for her blog’s title), she is a passionate but very unique traveler who has managed to strike a balance between her love for the open road, a full-time job, and her beloved cat.

A Dangerous Experiences is a solo female travel blog centered on her slightly offbeat experiences as she travels to epic destinations. Her homey descriptions of the places she’s been to outline a major (possibly life-changing) experience she’s had at every destination, such as her nail-biting experience on a mountainside in Iceland.

Besides these lucidly written posts, she has also made several posts specifically for the solo female traveler, such as Top 9 Questions about Solo Travel Answered  which debunks several myths surrounding solo female travel in addition to providing a few nuggets of wisdom.

#10 Keep Calm and Travel: Stop Dreaming, Start Moving

At the age of 35, Clelia bought herself a one-way ticket to Bangkok where her nomadic lifestyle kicked off in earnest. She has since had an on-and-off relationship with the open road which has led her to beautiful Cambodia, Thailand (where she worked as a ballet teacher for 5 months), and the magical Philippines. She is a full-time travel blogger with a world of experience on the places to visit, what to do there, and how to have the time of your life as a solo female traveler on the road.

Her blog is a collection of well-researched guides based on her personal experiences, tales of her most exciting experiences at wonderful destinations, places to visit if you want to see natural phenomenon such as the Northern Lights, and useful travel items for the solo traveler.

#11 Bucket List Journey: Tools & Inspiration to Live Your List

Annette and her husband Peter own a trattoria with lots of employees, which gives them plenty of time to fulfill their dream of traveling the world in search of new experiences. Bucket List Journey is a story told in her eyes about her adventures through the waters of Palau, the streets of Thailand, rain forests in Costa Rica, and her zany experience with swimming pigs in the sunny Bahamas.

More than anything, this blog is about getting over the travel jitters any first-time solo female traveler might have about chasing their dreams. Her blog is by far the most useful for the beginner solo traveler (regardless of the destination) since it offers helpful tips on how to pack, must-visit destinations, where to get accommodation, and staying safe on the road. Australia Travel Tips is a comprehensive travel guide for anyone looking to explore Australia for the first time.

#13 Girl vs Globe: Sole Female Travel Blog

Girl vs. Globe is Sabina’s attempt to recreate her experiences on the open road using stunning photography woven with the tales of her enthralling experiences. Her story takes us through her journey from her homeland in the Czech Republic to her current home in Scotland during which she fulfilled her childhood dream to travel the world.

Sabina takes her readers through earth-shattering experiences using nothing but exquisite photography that is good enough to make anyone catch the travel bug. Far from being just eye-candy, her blog contains useful guides through famous cities such as Budapest for the solo female traveler, tips on how travelers can make their Instagram pages as stunning as hers, and how to turn travel memoirs into a successful travel blog. Hippie in heels is a travel blog by Rachel Jones, a solo traveller hailing from Ohio. Her blogs feature a fun and hip way of travelling and amusing shopping destinations around the globe.

Readers can get many tips from traveling responsibly to what to buy and where to how to protect themselves from the harsh climates that first time travelers might encounter in stranger countries.

Take a read of these awesome female solo travel blogs to give you all the confidence and inspiration you need to bite the bullet and start living your wanderlust-filled dreams. After getting lost in their epic tales of adventure and new experiences, you won’t be able to keep your butt in your seat for much longer!

1. Kate McCulley of Adventurous Kate

At age 26, Kate quit her job to travel Southeast Asia for six months. Six months turned into five years, spanning more than 65 countries. If there's an adventure out there, she will go for it. Kate started her blog to show what it is like for women to travel solo. She believes it is best to teach by example, and her ultimate goal is to show women that independent and solo travel can be safe, easy, and a lot of fun.

2. Nadine Sykora Of hey nadine

If Nadine's face looks familiar, you may have seen her talking travel on her popular YouTube channel, Hey Nadine . She has traveled to 49 countries over the last six years, and her experiences have been recorded and documented across her blog and YouTube channel. Her videos are fun, light-hearted, and often include a side of humor to keep you smiling. In December of 2014, Nadine was invited to the White House as one of the Top 130 most influential travel bloggers and digital media outlets to attend the White House Travel Blogger Summit on Study Abroad and Global Citizenship.

3. Kiersten Rich Of   the blonde abroad

After graduating with honors and getting a job at a prestigious financial firm in LA, Kiersten realized she was living someone else's dream and needed to escape the corporate routine. She left her career to travel the world, volunteer in developing countries, and discover her own happily ever after. Since then, she has traveled to 50 countries and hopes to inspire others to live a life they love and settle for nothing less than extraordinary. 

4. Annette White Of bucket list journey

After getting a handle on a case of severe anxiety, Annette made a promise to herself to not let fear make decisions for her. As a result, she started saying yes instead of no to opportunities that presented themselves. That promise, along with her dedication to start living her bucket list, led her to making travel a second career. She has been on Safari through Africa, eaten insects in Thailand , zip-lined through the Costa Rican rain forest, swam with pigs in the Bahamas, bathed elephants at a recuse in Chiang Rai... the (bucket) list goes on! 

5. Amanda Williams Of   a dangerous business

As a kid, growing up on a Christmas Tree farm in a small, Ohio town didn't provide Amanda with much excitement. It wasn't until high school that she decided she wanted to travel, and a Lord of the Rings obsession is what let her to New Zealand after graduation. Since then, she has been to more than 45 countries and is always on the lookout for her next adventure. Amanda is a strong believer that when it comes to travel, there's no right or wrong way to do it. She's never given up on her "normal" life to travel long term and wants others to see that they don't have to quit their job or leave their loved ones behind in order to be a traveler. She hopes her blog and her stories will help convince you of that!

6. JUNO KIM Of runaway juno

Born and raised in Seoul, South Korea , Juno says leaving her job as a mechanical engineer to become a full-time travel blogger was one of the most difficult decisions that she ever made. As a Korean who grew up in a conservative household, her career departure created enough shock to change everything in her life, including her relationship with her own family. Fast forward to now, and after six years of full-time travel, Juno says she has grown. She has a deeper understanding of people now that she would have never learned if she stayed at home working as an engineer. Her travels also helped her grow to respect her own culture and realize the importance of family.

7. Dani Heinrich Of   globetrotter girls

In the middle of a long, grey British winter, Dani decided to break free and fly to Las Vegas on the first leg of what she thought would be a year-long trip around the world. Seven years later, and this one-year trip turned into a global exploration without an end date. Having lived in Austria, Spain, and England, Dani combines months of rapid travel with longer stays, living as a local wherever she can. She shares stories related to what it's like to be a gay or lesbian traveler, and also publishes guest posts by fellow LGBTQ travelers who share their travel stories and experiences as well. Her mission is to inspire curiosity about the world and provide the tips and tools to help you see as much of the world as you can for yourself.

8. Alexandra Baackes Of Alex in Wanderland

Alex in Wanderland was created in 2009 as a means for Alex to document her two month trip to Southeast Asia. The night before she left, she cried; terrified over the thought of eating dinner alone, getting lost in the airport, and having her camera stolen. That summer, she fell head-over-flip-flops in love with the adrenaline of travel and realized that there are truly people out there living the nomadic lifestyle that she thought only existed in her head. In 2011, Alex left New York to travel full time, and she has not had a permanent address since. There's no date, no itinerary, no real backup plan. Just adventure, adrenaline, and a lifetime of globe-trotting daydreams to fulfill.

9. Sherry Ott Of   otts world

Otts World is Sherry's journey from traditional cubicle to travel writer and digital nomad. She quit her corporate IT job in 2006, with the original intention of simply taking a year-long career break. In this time, Sherry traveled to 23 countries, finding a new and exciting world outside her office walls. Her eyes were opened to possibilities and the beauty of simplicity, so she sold all her possessions and relocated to Vietnam where she supported herself through teaching ESL, selling photography, and started working at building a blogging presence. Sherry is currently in her mid 40's and has spent over a decade living out of a suitcase with no permanent address since 2006. 

10. Liz Carlson Of young adventuress

Liz started her travel blog back in 2010 when she was getting ready to move to Spain to teach English and procrastinate on life. She lived on and off in Spain for over three years (Salamanca, Córdoba, and La Rioja) before learning that being a professional travel blogger was actually a thing. This prompted her move back into her parent's attic outside of Washington D.C. to work for a year, build out her blog properly, find work online, and save money. After having saved up enough, Liz walked into her boss' office, quit her job, moved to New Zealand and began full-time blogging. Liz Carlson’s ‘Young Adventures’ is another interesting travel blog. She began her blog in 2010, and her journey much earlier by spending three years in Spain. A Dangerous Business

The two spent a year traveling around Africa, Europe and the U.S., living in Montreal for a few years before settling in San Francisco, which they currently call home. As they travel to various destinations, many right in and around California, they share their adventures on Sending Postcards.

Hippie in Heels

Rachel Jones grew up in a small town in Ohio, where she lived with her brother and parents. When she got to college, she spent two summers backpacking in Europe and a month in Uganda. She went on to graduate with honors as a nurse. After 11 months as a cardiac care nurse in Charlotte, N.C., Rachel realized that a life in the "real world" wasn't for her. And so, she decided to retire from nursing and follow her heart.

She chose Goa, India, where she could ride a camel and climb a mountain, as her next home. It's where she's spent the last five years and where she currently documents her life on her travel blog, Hippie in Heels . She basically lives out of a backpack and survives on street food. While she's barely getting by financially, the trade off is worth it because she's been to 30 countries and counting. And she met the love of her life in India.

In 2008, the day after his 24th birthday, Ryan headed to Dublin, Ireland for his first solo backpacking trip through Europe. The three-month experience was life changing, and in 2010, Ryan quit his job. He then set off on a trip around the world that was supposed to last six months to a year. His passion for the sun, the sea and adventure wouldn't let him stop there, and he's been on the road for seven years.

Now he's a digital influencer and travel blogger who has spent the last three years in Playa del Carmen, sometimes visiting Greece during the hot summer months. His blog, Pause the Moment , features travel guides and resources for destinations all across the world. In 2017, he started running small group tours to Egypt, which he plans to continue in October 2018.

Christine chose some great travel vlogs and we don’t want to mess with her, list, but when you are done here, check out some other amazing travel YouTubers! These travel personalities are not only travel hosts, they are their own travel show! We made our own list of best travel vloggers too !

1. Fun for Louis

Louis Cole initially started out enthralling (and grossing out) viewers with his adventurous ability to eat every odd delicacy that was dead or alive.

Today, this U.K. travel vlogger has taken to daily vlogs of his life, inspiring viewers to live the adventure while travelling the world.

A well-loved travel vlog hero of YouTube, not only does he make binge-watching addictive, but he incorporates 360-degree video and has his fans introduce his videos.

2. Mr Ben Brown

Mr. Ben Brown is mostly known as a YouTube vlogger. But he travels a bit and his Visual Vibes series showcases some seriously stunning travel cinematography, which will leave you breathless.

An expert storyteller, his vlogs are partly filmed from his perspective, as if you’re inside his head.

Whether skiing, motorbiking or hiking, you’ll feel like you’re moving vicariously with him, as he traipses around the world to meet up with his posse of YouTuber friends.

Ben joined YouTube in 2006 definitely making him one of the older travel vloggers (at least by channel age) out there.

3. Vagabrothers

The Vagabrothers are the wacky boys of the travel vlogging world.

As charismatic travel hosts revving you for the flight,  they offer a cultural soft side into the joys of travelling.

Their travel videos incorporate fun shooting styles, collaborations with other YouTubers, destination guides focused on culture, and lethal drone shots.

4. Hey Nadine

As the reigning top female travel vlogs on YouTube, Nadine Sykora knows what YouTube audiences want.

As Hey Nadine , she infuses her travel lifestyle channel with a creative flair of fashion, fun, food and entertainment.

From travel tips, to “ What I Eat in a Day in. ..” ,… to playful collaborations with other travel YouTubers, Nadine’s channel drums up an addiction to seeing just what new video she puts out next.

5. Migrationology

Would you travel for food? Favorite food vlogger and travel YouTuber Mark Weins does, and boy does he!

A travel and food blog, Migrationology has hit gastronomical stardom on YouTube, making Mark the number one ‘foodie guy’ to both, watch and read.

Mark is the ultimate digital nomad!

He shares his passion for travel by delivering each country through mouth-watering morsels.

You’ll find DIY city guides and of course, lots and lots of food videos!

6. Wolters World

Mark of Woltersworld is my favorite ‘Loves & Hates Travel Guy’, sharing his unchained opinion on what travelers will love, hate and be shocked with about each city.

He tells it like it is and his honesty won’t take away your excitement in experiencing the place for yourself.

His videos are highly informative insights, which crack the travel code of each country.

Schedule: Wednesdays and Saturdays

7. Hopscotch the Globe

Kristin Sarah merges her acting chops with her love for travel in Hopscotch the Globe .

She’s like that fun travel bestie who’s not afraid to be a little silly. Her channel incorporates vlogging with cultural parodies and travel inspired DIY recipes.

Today, she shares her channel spotlight with her husband Siya; together, these travel partners in crime hop around the globe, creating weekly entertainment.

They’ve also recently added a baby drone into their picture!

8. Psychotraveller

If twenty-something backpacking is your thing, check out Psychotraveller .

Ally dishes backpacking travel tips, vlogs and travel budget information, all with a dose of humor.

Best of all, her favorite filming studio is often a hostel room!

9. GRRRL TRAVELER

Does traveling alone freak you out? Christine Kaaloa of GRRRL TRAVELER takes you inside the adventurous world of solo travel and shows you how she survives it.

Experiencing culture shock and filming it , isn’t easy, but Christine finds ways to turn her encounters of taxi scams, Asian squat toilets, airport layovers and getting sick abroad, into travel survival tips to walk away with !

A solo travel blogger, she films and blogs travel tips and city and food travel guides, while playing with video storytelling styles.

10.  Sonia’s Travels

Sonia is your female travel MacGyver. From how to pack your makeup to product reviews and how to score a deal on a hotel, she’s got slick tips to make you a savvy traveler.

Her tips are usually around 2-3 minutes, which make her videos perfect to watch with your morning coffee.

Until then, she has hundreds of travel tip videos to keep your travels well-groomed.

11.  The Planet D

Dave and Deb of The Planet D , not only live the dream of travel, but they also visit some of the most exotic places that most of us can only dream about!

This zany travel-adventure couple have blogged about adventure travel for the past 10 years, and now they’re on YouTube too, inspiring each other (and others) to take a passion for adventure to the next level. Making the list as one of the couple travel vloggers to watch.

From polar ice plunges in Antarctica to riding the fastest zipline or ballooning over the Masai Mara, their channel covers a bucket list of activities to try when you’re looking to leave your comfort zone.

Expats & Nomads: Travel Youtubers Hitting the Road

12.  gone with the wynns.

Ever think of packing up your family life and hitting the road in an RV?

Nikki and Jason of Gone with the Wynns sold it all and packed it up to hit the highway.

From composting toilets to solar powering an RV (okay, not your everyday travel story), they’ve transformed the concept of an RV travel lifestyle for YouTube.

Their videos are well-shot and occasionally, filmed like a sexy commercial (okay, not your every day RV travel video).

Recently, they’ve made a rather new change in their lives, by trading in their RV for a sailboat!

13. Samuel & Audrey

You may know Samuel and Audrey as their travel blogging aliases, Nomadic Samuel and That Backpacker .

As former ex-Korea expats, this adorable travel geek couple are on an indefinite road between expat life and nomadism.

Their channel is prolific with destination guides and food taste tests.

For audiences, who want to get their binge watching on without taking a break, they are also known to occasionally have long format videos.

Schedule: 1-2 times a week.

14. 8 Miles from Home

Inspiring us to take our dream lifestyle (and dog) abroad is 8 Miles from Home .

Sacha and Jymael are British photographers turn expat vloggers, documenting their life in Thailand.

Their vlogs are cinematic video diaries, occasionally incorporate dazzling special FX.

Recently they announced their new adventure~ a move to Portugal and a baby!

15. The Food Ranger

If you love Asian food, Trevor is The Food Ranger of Asia. An expat in Sichuan, China, he chomps and slurps some of the best Chinese cuisine (and uh, some pretty obscure foods too).

Commendable is his ability to upload regular videos while staying under China’s banned radar (YouTube and Google are banned in China).

He’s quickly growing a following as a new foodie channel to watch.

How the best travel vloggers were chosen:

Like all lists, people will wonder why they’re not on it. I’m positive I missed some good ones, but this is very loose criteria I’d be using if I were hired to cast, produce or pitch a TV show. Creators did not need to meet all criteria, but most. – Programming: Weekly dedication, quality, storytelling & individual style execution – Audience: Niche, loyalty, & YouTube friendly – Blog worthy and/or binge worthy – Does it bring a new spin to the term “travel video” or “travel show” – Channel Personality/Talent: brand recognition, hosting & entertainment value

So, I’m here to highlight some of the best UK travel blogs for you to plan your trip by. Let’s look at the best travel blogs, UK style. Think of this as my travel blog awards, to the best UK travel bloggers (IMO).

There are a few other lists out there, featuring the best UK travel influencers , but I’ve met almost each and every one of these British travel bloggers personally. I can totally vouch for their skills, their personalities and their outlook, AND their dedication.

This article will introduce you to some of the top UK travel blogs. Whether you’re looking for UK travel bloggers to follow, work with or keep an eye on – these are the best.

2. Helen Davies from Helen in Wonderlust

I first met Helen at a travel blogging conference in Dublin and by the end of our first drink together we had a mutual appreciation for one another. That shouldn’t sound weird if it does.

Helen used to work at Kelloggs but wasn’t responsible for the Choco Krispies / Coco Pops renaming debacle, which was my first question.

Now she runs tours in Africa with her company Rock My Adventure Tours , and lives there half of the year. Her travel blog Helen in Wonderlust , is the leading course of info on backpacking Africa. You can find out more about Helen in the podcast chat I had with her. I’ve also travelled to Malawi, Zimbabwe and Zambia with Helen, and most recently, went camping in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland with her.

Together with me, Jen and Alicia we form the originally Midlands consortium of UK travel bloggers. They’ve recently set up house down London way though they’re well-known for their worldwide house sitting skills.

Emily is great fun and one of my favourite travel bloggers to travel with. She’s an excellent photographer and writer, and loves to get the most out of every trip she goes on. She’s so passionate about travel and often goes off on multi-month adventures, most recently to Central America.

Emily Luxton Travels claims she’s a shy girl who found herself travelling, but usually when I see her she’ll be making friends with a glass of wine in her hand. And I see her quite a lot as we’ve lived together for three years now. We’ve had a lot of adventures together – including paddle boarding in Hampshire , in Trentino and in Chang Mai in Thailand too.

Dan is absolutely one of my favourite travel buddies and UK bloggers. His photography is incredible and I love the videos he makes too.

Dan lives in Portugal and the UK, in between jetting off around the world. He loves a goat, an adventure, and an opportunity to try something new.

Last year we went skiing for the first time , for him, and although it didn’t go to plan, he stayed positive and did what he does best instead – took photos and made a video.

6. Jen Lowthrop from She Gets Around

Me and Jen go way back, in travel blogger terms. Now she’s one of my favourite people in the UK travel blogger world – we’ve had some great times in London, Porto and Brighton at various conferences.

She’s all about the volunteering, and the dating, and is a great person to talk to to chew the fat with too.

We had a great summer trip sailing in Croatia one year, and she’s another one in the Glastonbury crew .

Monica is brilliant, and one of the UK’s top travel bloggers. She’s got three beautiful children and life up in Chester somewhere and one of those French bulldog dogs that people like too.

Her top UK blog all about the stylish travel and I don’t know anyone who enjoys Twitter chats more than her. We used to work together in social media what seems like an age ago, but now we just talk a lot on Facebook Messenger instead.

She has one of the best blogs UK has to offer.

We’ve been to the Florida Keys together , to Levi in Finland and many, many UK travel blogger conferences too.

Isn’t she lovely hey?

Emily is a sweetheart and is enjoying her lovely life with the help of a good brew and with the presence of an animal now and then. I just went on her blog to find her social media details and for her latest post she’s photoshopped her face onto someone holding a koala. That’s just the way she rolls over on The Cosy Traveller.

Emily is definitely one of my favourite UK travel bloggers.

Chloe is great. We’ve been skiing in France together, and lived it up on St Kitts where we drank so many rum cocktails I’m pretty sure we were sick of them by the end of the week.

Anyway, her blog is awesome and she’s an ambassador for Lonely Planet and Visit England, and probably other stuff I don’t know about too. She used to work as a producer with Emma Bunton – Baby Spice!

10. Macca Sherifi from An Adventurous World

Macca and I used to work together too, with Monica. Oh the FUN we had. He’s a good friend, and I especially enjoy his company after we’ve both had a little drinky drinky.

Last time I went out with him he was singing McFly songs at full volume at the bar. As for being a blogger, he’s super passionate about his work, and seeing the world. His photography and video skills are amazing. He’s one of the top UK travel vloggers.

We haven’t ever actually travelled together – need to rectify that.

11. Lloyd and Yaya from Hand Luggage Only

Lloyd and Yaya were crowned Vuelio’s Travel Bloggers of the Year in 2017 & 18 . Meaning, they’ve actually got the highest views of any travel blogger in the UK. Their blog is AMAZING. It’s the fun and the photography that makes it so good.

They’re two of the best people I know and after our awesome weekend in Hamburg together, I just think they’re both brilliant. They deserve every success they have. Think they should probably sit down and take a rest though – travel much?

12. Jess Gibson from The Travelista

Jess looks incredible wherever she goes and whatever she does. I love seeing what she’s wearing around the world – pretty sure her Canada trip was some of her best outfits.

Her UK blog isn’t just all about fashion though, her travel tips for England, Europe, the US and her Asian adventures will help you travel in style. Jess has just welcomed her son Theo into the world and I’m so excited to see her embrace their journeys together.

13. Shu Lin from DejaShu

I love Shu. She’s a ball of energy and fun, yet really knows her stuff when it comes to travel and food too. I’ve learned a lot from her, especially about air fryers.

Shu doesn’t actually have a blog, as she’s a YouTuber and Instagrammer but I couldn’t write a list of the best UK travel influencers without her. She’s also a BBC star with a documentary about Chinese food in England that you need to check out.

As one of the most well known and experienced on this list of UK based travel bloggers Abi has been featured in the likes of Grazia, Conde Nast, the BBC and Stylist Magazine. Ooo, the blogger did good. And once upon a time she was a doctor, which explains all the ‘lab’ influence. Just realised she’d be a great person to go on a press trip with, what with all that medical knowledge.

Eulanda and Omo like to describe themselves as your ‘everyday kind of couple’ but I’ve met them and they’re way cooler than that.

Julie’s been a featured Instagrammer on Instagram and runs all kinds of workshops on travel blogging. Although she’s from the US her blog style is elegantly English featuring her sussing out the best of the things to do around the world, not just in London. Julie’s also got a travel planning business, if you need.

She’s one of the top travel bloggers in the UK and has one of the best blogs about travel.

17. Arianwen Morris from Beyond Blighty

Arianwen is an original member of The Travel Chicks but left to go and explore South America for a year. Then she came back, lasted a few months, and went travelling round New Zealand. She’s now in London but the last time we went for a few glasses of red wine, I could tell her feet were definitely getting itchy. Lavina has so much passion for travel and energy for life, she’s a total joy to be around. Love seeing her at a travel conference or meet up!

She works full time as a business analyst but has still worked out a way to visit 46 countries, including camping in the Sahara and haggling in the Marrakesh souks. We’ve had some great nights out at travel events in London together and he’s very entertaining. He recently, actually I think it was a while ago now, did the 24 Peaks Challenge in 24 hours to raise money for a charity close to his heart. He’s one of my absolute favourite English travel bloggers, although I feel like I’m saying that about everyone now.

Flora is one of life’s good people. She’s so lovely and travels in a way that reflects what’s important to her. I was gripped as she travelled South America, learning Spanish and meeting people as she explored. She’s now based in London and is planning on walking the Camino de Santiago this year.

As well as being one of the top British travel bloggers Flora is also an author – I’ve read the Adult Orphan Club , and although it’s super sad and I dread the day I’ll actually need to read it again, it’s a super useful resource for anyone who’s lost their parents.

Bit jealous that she’s been travelling ever since she finished university – good on her. She’s well into her YouTube channel and I’ve spent the last 30 minutes catching up with the last few weeks. I enjoy the comments about her accent – love a northerner.

She has one of the best UK travel sites on the internet.

Spurred by Teen Girls, States Move to Ban Deepfake Nudes

Legislators in two dozen states are working on bills, or have passed laws, to combat A.I.-generated sexually explicit images of minors.

Caroline Mullet, a ninth grader at Issaquah High School near Seattle, went to her first homecoming dance last fall, a James Bond-themed bash with blackjack tables attended by hundreds of girls dressed up in party frocks.

A few weeks later, she and other female students learned that a male classmate was circulating fake nude images of girls who had attended the dance, sexually explicit pictures that he had fabricated using an artificial intelligence app designed to automatically “strip” clothed photos of real girls and women.

Ms. Mullet, 15, alerted her father, Mark , a Democratic Washington State senator. Although she was not among the girls in the pictures, she asked if something could be done to help her friends, who felt “extremely uncomfortable” that male classmates had seen simulated nude images of them. Soon, Senator Mullet and a colleague in the State House proposed legislation to prohibit the sharing of A.I.-generated sexually explicit depictions of real minors.

“I hate the idea that I should have to worry about this happening again to any of my female friends, my sisters or even myself,” Ms. Mullet told state lawmakers during a hearing on the bill in January.

The State Legislature passed the bill without opposition. Gov. Jay Inslee, a Democrat, signed it last month.

States are on the front lines of a rapidly spreading new form of peer sexual exploitation and harassment in schools. Boys across the United States have used widely available “nudification” apps to surreptitiously concoct sexually explicit images of their female classmates and then circulated the simulated nudes via group chats on apps like Snapchat and Instagram.

Now, spurred in part by troubling accounts from teenage girls like Ms. Mullet, federal and state lawmakers are rushing to enact protections in an effort to keep pace with exploitative A.I. apps.

Since early last year, at least two dozen states have introduced bills to combat A.I.-generated sexually explicit images — known as deepfakes — of people under 18, according to data compiled by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, a nonprofit organization. And several states have enacted the measures.

Among them, South Dakota this year passed a law that makes it illegal to possess, produce or distribute A.I.-generated sexual abuse material depicting real minors. Last year, Louisiana enacted a deepfake law that criminalizes A.I.-generated sexually explicit depictions of minors.

“I had a sense of urgency hearing about these cases and just how much harm was being done,” said Representative Tina Orwall , a Democrat who drafted Washington State’s explicit-deepfake law after hearing about incidents like the one at Issaquah High.

Some lawmakers and child protection experts say such rules are urgently needed because the easy availability of A.I. nudification apps is enabling the mass production and distribution of false, graphic images that can potentially circulate online for a lifetime, threatening girls’ mental health, reputations and physical safety.

“One boy with his phone in the course of an afternoon can victimize 40 girls, minor girls,” said Yiota Souras , chief legal officer for the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, “and then their images are out there.”

Over the last two months, deepfake nude incidents have spread in schools — including in Richmond, Ill. , and Beverly Hills and Laguna Beach , Calif.

Yet few laws in the United States specifically protect people under 18 from exploitative A.I. apps.

That is because many current statutes that prohibit child sexual abuse material or adult nonconsensual pornography — involving real photos or videos of real people — may not cover A.I.-generated explicit images that use real people’s faces, said U.S. Representative Joseph D. Morelle, a Democrat from New York.

Last year, he introduced a bill that would make it a crime to disclose A.I.-generated intimate images of identifiable adults or minors. It would also give deepfake victims, or parents, the right to sue individual perpetrators for damages.

“We want to make this so painful for anyone to even contemplate doing, because this is harm that you just can’t simply undo,” Mr. Morelle said. “Even if it seems like a prank to a 15-year-old boy, this is deadly serious.”

U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, another New York Democrat, recently introduced a similar bill to enable victims to bring civil cases against deepfake perpetrators.

But neither bill would explicitly give victims the right to sue the developers of A.I. nudification apps, a step that trial lawyers say would help disrupt the mass production of sexually explicit deepfakes.

“Legislation is needed to stop commercialization, which is the root of the problem,” said Elizabeth Hanley, a lawyer in Washington who represents victims in sexual assault and harassment cases.

The U.S. legal code prohibits the distribution of computer-generated child sexual abuse material depicting identifiable minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct. Last month, the Federal Bureau of Investigation issued an alert warning that such illegal material included realistic child sexual abuse images generated by A.I.

Yet fake A.I.-generated depictions of real teenage girls without clothes may not constitute “child sexual abuse material,” experts say, unless prosecutors can prove the fake images meet legal standards for sexually explicit conduct or the lewd display of genitalia.

Some defense lawyers have tried to capitalize on the apparent legal ambiguity. A lawyer defending a male high school student in a deepfake lawsuit in New Jersey recently argued that the court should not temporarily restrain his client, who had created nude A.I. images of a female classmate, from viewing or sharing the pictures because they were neither harmful nor illegal. Federal laws, the lawyer argued in a court filing, were not designed to apply “to computer-generated synthetic images that do not even include real human body parts.” (The defendant ultimately agreed not to oppose a restraining order on the images.)

Now states are working to pass laws to halt exploitative A.I. images. This month, California introduced a bill to update a state ban on child sexual abuse material to specifically cover A.I.-generated abusive material.

And Massachusetts lawmakers are wrapping up legislation that would criminalize the nonconsensual sharing of explicit images, including deepfakes. It would also require a state entity to develop a diversion program for minors who shared explicit images to teach them about issues like the “responsible use of generative artificial intelligence.”

Punishments can be severe. Under the new Louisiana law, any person who knowingly creates, distributes, promotes or sells sexually explicit deepfakes of minors can face a minimum prison sentence of five to 10 years.

In December, Miami-Dade County police officers arrested two middle school boys for allegedly making and sharing fake nude A.I. images of two female classmates, ages 12 and 13, according to police documents obtained by The New York Times through a public records request. The boys were charged with third-degree felonies under a 2022 state law prohibiting altered sexual depictions without consent. (The state attorney’s office for Miami-Dade County said it could not comment on an open case.)

The new deepfake law in Washington State takes a different approach.

After learning of the incident at Issaquah High from his daughter, Senator Mullet reached out to Representative Orwall, an advocate for sexual assault survivors and a former social worker. Ms. Orwall, who had worked on one of the state’s first revenge-porn bills, then drafted a House bill to prohibit the distribution of A.I.-generated intimate, or sexually explicit, images of either minors or adults. (Mr. Mullet, who sponsored the companion Senate bill, is now running for governor .)

Under the resulting law , first offenders could face misdemeanor charges while people with prior convictions for disclosing sexually explicit images would face felony charges. The new deepfake statute takes effect in June.

“It’s not shocking that we are behind in the protections,” Ms. Orwall said. “That’s why we wanted to move on it so quickly.”
