Welcome to Fun 2 Dive Manatee Tours where we specialize in five-star small, semi-private, and private manatee snorkeling tours. We are open daily, year-round.

We conduct tours to swim with manatees in the Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge. Tours are conducted from stable boats with heavy duty ladders, where we enter the water to encounter wild manatees in their natural habitat.

In 1983, the Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge was established in Kings Bay to specifically protect the Florida manatees that consider this area their home. King’s Bay is fed by 40 natural springs, which maintain a constant temperature of 72 °F (22 °C) — a temperature that the Manatees love and need.

Ryan and Jessica were great to tour with, extremely knowledgeable, and went out of their way to look for manatees further away from the crowds when possible. We saw several manatees and a few calves with their moms. Fun 2 Dive staff are very friendly and respectful to the environment and the animals which I hope we all learn from in the years to come. They also take excellent photographs, so you can leave your camera at home.

Just went on our first trip out to see the manatees. Captain Jason and guide Bree were amazing and so patient. The knowledge they both shared made the trip magical. If you come to see manatees I would definitely go with Fun 2 Dive. The entire staff was awesome and worked together to ensure we all had great tours and made memories to last a lifetime.

This was worth the money. We visited in the "off season" for manatees and were a little worried we might not find one. However, our guides knew all the best places and we were in the water for over 2 hours within a few feet of them. The equipment provided was like new and we were given helpful instructions on appropriate behavior when interacting with the manatees. We chose the 6 people or less in a group option and I would say the smaller the group had better the experience.

One of the absolute best experiences we’ve ever had. My dive partner Ryan, and our Captain Jason made this trip one of the best we’ve ever done. They are professional, knowledgeable, and absolutely delightful to be with. Even if you’re not swimming & you just stay on the boat to observe it's a fabulous way to spend a few hours. I can honestly say this was my greatest experience to date. Dani was very knowledgeable and made us feel comfortable searching for manatees. She took great pictures and made sure our group was all accounted for. Captain Ryan, our boat driver, was very informative about the areas and waters. He knew key spots to dive into. Best Florida Manatee Tours And Manatee Diving

Florida is a beautiful state with many opportunities that are not available elsewhere in the United States. Swimming with manatees, a large sea mammal, is one of those opportunities.

Manatees are gentle giants that slowly roam oceans and rivers while consuming massive amounts of plant matter. Seeing this animal up close in their environment is a learning experience that you should not pass up.

There is much to know about the manatee, and much to gain from taking a tour in their environment. We will go over some basic manatee biology and provide you with some beginner tour tips along with some of the most popular manatee tour locations.

The Manatees

Manatees are large, lumbering marine mammals that can be found along coastlines and rivers. These gentle animals are known for being kind and harmless, which brings about their cute nickname, the sea cow.

There are three species of manatees in the world, but the West Indian manatee is the most common species found in Florida. West Indian manatees will be our focal point.

Hungry, Hungry Manatee

Manatees are herbivorous creatures with ravenous appetites that spend their day grazing plant matter at the bottom of the sea and rivers.

Weighing in at 1,200-pounds, they have a lot of body mass to keep healthy and energized with their food. Weeds, algae, mangrove leaves, and water grasses are some choice favorites, and the manatee will eat about ten percent of their weight in a day.

West Indian manatees require fresh water to stay hydrated, so they often live on the cusp between fresh and salt waters.  

Slow Travels Ahead

The manatee is a bulky beast that glides effortlessly across the ocean. Their large size and strong tails let them drift through the water at a typically slow pace of 5 miles per hour. Since they have no dangerous predators, they do not require speed; however, they can travel at 15 miles per hour in short bursts when needed.

Surface Visits

Since manatees are mammals, they do require surface visits for oxygen. They do not leave the water to venture on land; however, they rise to the surface for air. Depending on their activity level, they can remain submerged for up to fifteen minutes.

One gulp of air can replace ninety percent of the air in their lungs. To put this in comparison, one breath for a human replaces about ten percent of the air in our lungs.

That is a radical difference that allows the manatee to live happily in its underwater habitat.

Warm Waters

We tend to see a large animal and assume that their bodies are made up of mostly fat. That is not the case with these glorious mammals. Manatee bodies are primarily made up of their stomach and intestines.

This means that they are not insulated well enough to maintain healthy body temperature in waters that are colder than 60-degrees.

River tributaries, where a river enters a larger body of water, attract manatees in cooler weather due to the warmth of the waters.

Human power plants produce heat in the waters around them, and it is common for manatees to converge in these areas in cold temperatures.

Human Interference

Unfortunately, the biggest threat to the manatees’ survival is humans.

Humans hunt these gentle creatures for their bones, oils, and hides. Less maliciously, yet more dangerous in today’s time, manatees face far more risk from boats and fishing nets.

Responsible tourism in the form of manatee tours can be beneficial for the manatees by bringing awareness to the threats that impact their lives.

Passive observation tours are especially beneficial for educating the public on the lives of manatees. Ecotourism teaches people to respect animals while they survive in their habitats. This type of tourism is beneficial for manatees as well as the economy of those locations.

Your Family's Gotta Try This: Snorkeling with Manatees in Crystal River

When you get up-close-and-personal with a manatee, the first thing that you notice is its gargantuan size. Adult manatees are normally 9-10 feet long and weigh around 1,000 pounds, but they can grow to over 13 feet long and weigh more than 3,500 pounds. 1,000 pounds is the size of the average horse. That’s a big animal—whether you’re atop a paddleboard, in a kayak or boat, and particularly if you’re swimming next to one.

The second thing you notice is how cute they are. A manatee face is akin to something out of a cartoon, with tiny, round eyes and a shrunken, smushed- in version of an elephant’s trunk for a snout—big, soft and grey, complete with a smattering of whiskers. Their profiles are blimp-like, and they have two forelimb flippers they employ to steer and to hold vegetation while they munch on it.

Algae and barnacles cling to their backs, a hint at their speed—or rather, their lack of it. They normally lumber around at about five miles an hour, but have the capacity to motor up to 15 miles per hour in short bursts, should the rare occasion warrant it. They’re gentle beasts with no natural predators, and as they eat more than a tenth  of their weight in food every day, grazing is a focal point of their days.

In this extraordinary interactive experience, participants will enjoy the manatees in the shallow water as well as the unique opportunity of Swimming with The Manatees all day! 

Aided by snorkel, mask and wet suits that are included, there is no better way than this to truly experience the grace and power of the West Indian Manatee.  

Your phenomenal six-hour private manatee encounter is proceeded by an educational presentation to prepare you for a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Along the way you may see dolphins, American bald eagles and many more birds of prey.

We provide all snacks, beverages and lunch with your Captain (Lunch is provided from one of our local restaurants on the bay, and or have pizza delivered to your boat). Snorkeling gear and wet suits are included.

This is a private manatee encounter with just you and your family. Only those that booked this trip of the day will be on the boats, except for the captain. Join us for a day in our life.... our way of life!
