Jeanne du Barry Review: Johnny Depp and Maïwenn Have Royal Chemistry
It may not be the most accurate portrait of its subjects, but Jeanne du Barry is a beautiful and thoughtful romance.
- Jeanne du Barry is a regal visual feast thanks Maïwenn's keen direction.
- Maïwenn and Johnny Depp have a genuine chemistry and portray a distinct love in quiet, subtle ways.
- The portraits of Jeanne, Louis XV, and other people may be a bit one-dimensional and ahistorical, but Jeanne du Barry has impressive themes and gorgeous visuals nonetheless.
Jeanne du Barry is a film of gestures and glances, not sweeping monologues and action. It has some of the court intrigue found in titles like The Other Boleyn Girl, The Madness of King George , and Dangerous Liaisons , but ultimately isn't too interested in the backroom wheeling and dealing of monarchic power players. As the title implies, the film is a biography of Jeanne Bécu, who would become Madame du Barry , and mostly focuses on her time at Versailles as the chief mistress of King Louis XV.
Jeanne du Barry offers a gorgeous look at Versailles in the years leading up to the French Revolution , when the Jacobins would change everything about power in France. Class consciousness would fuel that violent period, and the film itself is very much centered on class; Jeanne was the 'illegitimate' child of a poor seamstress and would spend time as a sex worker during the Libertine era of France before climbing a ladder made of men and reaching the King himself. As such, she was considered scandalous, threatening the customs and image of Versailles, but she was a favorite of the King.
Filmmaker and star Maïwenn creates a subtle, sexy, and sensitive portrait of the woman and her time with the King, while also providing a quiet commentary on power and class.
Maïwenn and Johnny Depp Create Sparks
Jeanne du barry.
Jeanne du Barry is a historical drama that tells the story of the titular character who, on her journey out of the clutches of poverty, catches the eye of King Louis XV. Concealing her identity from him, Jeanne earns his favor, and the two fall in love, but upon moving to Versailles to deepen their relationship, scandal strikes France's court.
- Johnny Depp and Maïwenn have great chemistry in this period romance.
- Maïwenn creates a visually stunning movie that feels like a regal painting.
- An interesting study of class and the ephemeral nature of power.
- Paints perhaps too one-dimensional a picture of Jeanne, Louis XV, and the period.
Of course, Jeanne du Barry has generated the most attention from its casting of Johnny Depp as King Louis XV. It's basically Depp's first film following the infamous trial between him and Amber Heard, and whatever you think of that issue, it's undeniable that he's charming and sad here. It's hard to tell how much of this is stunt casting; this is a completely French film, and while Depp's French is good, his dialogue does seem limited based on his French lexicon . But again, what Depp does with his eyes and his body is captivating.
Johnny Depp, Amber Heard, and the Will Smith Slap: An Analysis
There's an Ecclesiastical air to his character, as if Louis has become indifferent to all the luxury, gluttony, sex, and power that he has. When Jeanne appears at Versailles, Louis XV seems to rekindle a sense of meaning in his life again.
For Jeanne's part, she did what she had to do as a female commoner in the 18th century; as she says at one point, she chose "harlotry" above peasantry. She's used her beauty to situate herself in the lives and manors of rich men, and King Louis XV is basically the apotheosis of this. She is enamored with him, but in a human way that violates all the tiny and petty rules of the court (the proper way to curtsy, how to back away from the King, etc.).
Depp and Maïwenn have a palpable chemistry here , and watching the ebbs and flows of their relationship is an often mesmerizing study of desire, power, class, and downright joy. Of course, this scandalizes the monarchy, and Louis XV's family is none too pleased. Maïwenn paints Louis' daughters and the other power-players of Versailles in an almost cartoonishly evil light, and the portrait of Louis' grandson, Louis XVI, is one-dimensionally heroic. There are three or four scenes that replicate the same situation — Louis' daughters humiliate Jeanne, and Louis' grandson stands up to support her.
Jeanne du Barry: Why the Film Is the Perfect Return for Johnny Depp
A visually beautiful whitewashing of jeanne and king louis xv.
Maïwenn is often glowing in the film , using her beautiful hair and broad smile effectively. Her laughter and innocent dismissal of pomp and circumstance is delightful. If anything, Maïwenn paints too kind a portrait of Jeanne and Louis XV, discarding any aspect of their characters that wasn't touched by passion and love. They become heroes, an odd thing considering the state of France at the time and the fact that the guillotine would begin chopping off the heads of Versailles during Jeanne's lifetime. This may be offensive to some people (historians and socialists, most likely). Regardless, Jeanne du Barry is a historical romance film and not a historical document for academics.
However, as a director, Maïwenn's portrayal of France in the mid-to-late 18th century is objectively stunning and historically honest to the layperson. The filmmaker creates a series of beautiful tableaux vivants that practically bring great French neoclassicism to life , with images that feel straight from Jacques-Louis David's sketchbook.
Maïwenn and cinematographer Laurent Dailland use the play of light and shadow in very sensual ways , and her long shots of massive manors and rooms are regal and impressive. Stephen Warbeck's score is suitably tender and majestic, even if it does feel like just a less bombastic version of his score for Shakespeare in Love 25 years ago.
Jeanne du Barry Director Slams Misinterpretation of 'Scary' Johnny Depp Comments: 'I Was Shocked'
The real jeanne and the ephemeral nature of all things.
One of the most interesting facets of Jeanne du Barry is how it subtly explores the expendable qualities of people and positions, and the transitory nature of desire and power . This is most typified in the phrase, "The King is dead! Long live the King!" One King dies, and another is ready to take his place. One mistress or lover falls out of favor, and another takes its place. The coming French Revolution would exacerbate this idea to a delirious degree.
In fact, Jeanne du Barry introduces us to Zamor, the former slave who would serve as the page for Jeanne. In the film, Jeanne is deeply protective of Zamor and treats him like a son. In return, he looks to her as a mother. In reality, Zamor was sufficiently bitter at Jeanne that he helped imprison her and was responsible for her beheading (which is very vaguely mentioned in the film's post-text). And then, typical of the French Revolution, Zamor himself was imprisoned for being Jeanne's page and for ever having associated with her. Power reigns at one moment, and is subjugated at the next. The King is dead, long live the King . Or, as The Who sang, "Meet the new boss, same as the old boss."
And thus is the sweet sadness of Jeanne du Barry . We see the love between her and Louis XV burn bright and fast before being replaced by Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, who, of course, would be killed in the French Revolution. We see Jeanne as a beautiful young woman, and we see her as a graying and melancholic older woman. We see the king in power, and we see him dying of smallpox. If anything, despite capturing just one brief period in the life of a King, Jeanne du Barry is a moving meditation on the ephemeral nature of all things.
From Why Not Productions and Vertical, Jeanne du Barry hits theaters May 2, 2024. You can get tickets and find showtimes here .
“Abigail” Plays Out Like a Loose Reimagining of “Dracula’s Daughter”
Your weekly roundup of movies..
The blood splatters real good in Abigail , a loose reimagining of Dracula’s Daughter (1936) from directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett ( Scream, 2022; Scream VI , 2023). A group of kidnappers who don’t know each other get in over their heads once they realize the young ballerina they took (the titular character, played by Alisha Weir) turns out to be a vampire. They must work together to fight her off after their mansion hideout becomes a sanguine prison. Melissa Barrera, Dan Stevens and Kathryn Newton are just some of the faces in the small but likable cast; Kevin Durand gets a lot of laughs as the dumb muscle of the group. While everyone is solid, Weir is the key player here, managing the tricky task of flipping between desperate and terrifying. Abigail has a fun setup and first half as it plays like a game of Clue as the victims try to guess things about each other. The second half begins to drag, though, once the cat-and-mouse situations become repetitive. Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett have a great eye for horror action, but the script by Stephen Shields and Guy Busick could have used a little more tightening. R. DANIEL RESTER. THE TRUTH VS. ALEX JONES
The 21st century has been described as a “post-truth” era: a time when bad actors can use the levers of modern media to proliferate misinformation and inflate extremist ideologies. In these times, it often seems impossible that these grifters will be held to account for the damage their lies cause. The Truth vs. Alex Jones succeeds in providing some catharsis, though it’s a harrowing journey to get there. If you’re unfamiliar with Alex Jones, he’s the creator and host of the alt-right conspiracy show InfoWars who spent years insisting the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting was a “false flag operation” to create a pretext for the government to crack down on the Second Amendment. Despite the obvious ridiculousness of his claims, Jones’ reach was enough that families of the victims became inundated with harassment by Jones’ fans and employees, leading to two separate defamation lawsuits, documented by HBO, against the man and his company. While there’s some satisfaction to be found in Jones’ inevitable losses, director Dan Reed succeeds in making the families’ pain real and palpable, particularly in a sequence in which lead investigator Daniel Jewiss solemnly recounts the events of Dec. 14, 2012, and lists the names of all 26 victims. It’s powerful stuff and serves to highlight how base and craven Jones was to twist this senseless tragedy into a vehicle for hawking brain pills and overpriced gold. The Truth vs. Alex Jones doesn’t do a full dive into the host’s abhorrent views (his bigotry, his religious zealotry, the abusive relationship he has with his audience), but it does get to the core of who he is: a delusional narcissist incapable of facing a reality that doesn’t match his beliefs or of acknowledging the harm his actions have caused. The movie reminds us there’s no reasoning with or giving the benefit of the doubt to a man like Jones. Exposing his lies might seem like a never-ending battle, but the truth is worth fighting for. R. MORGAN SHAUNETTE. Max.
CHALLENGERS
Late in Challengers , flailing tennis player Art (Mike Faist) begs for the unconditional love of his wife and coach, Tashi (Zendaya). “What am I, Jesus?” she snaps. Art’s reply? “Yeah!” Zendaya is perfectly cast as an athletic deity. Yet the film is pointedly uninterested in Tashi, preferring to aim its obsessive gaze at Art and Patrick (Josh O’Connor), a smug, smirking fellow tennis player and frenemy. With Luca Guadagnino (director of the deliciously seductive Call Me by Your Name ) in command, Challengers is less a film than a feast of sensual pleasures: alluringly crisp polo shirts, sweat dripping across masculine brows, muscles so taut they threaten to snap. On and off the court, Art and Patrick battle for Tashi’s attention and affection, but she’s mostly a conduit through which they negotiate their repressed desires (any moviegoer missing the sexual tension will be enlightened by the scene in which the two men munch on the same churro). It’s disappointing that Tashi is portrayed as more of a mythical being than a complex woman, but it’s moving to watch Guadagnino subvert a seemingly conventional male rivalry in ways that should shock Björn Borg and John McEnroe. If Tashi really is Art and Patrick’s lord and savior, the message of Challengers is clear: Disciples have all the fun. R. BENNETT CAMPBELL FERGUSON. AMC, Cedar Hills, Cinema 21, City Center, Clackamas, Division Street, Eastport, Evergreen Parkway, Hilltop, Lake Theater, Lloyd Center, Oak Grove, Regal Fox, Vancouver Plaza.
The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare
Most filmgoers decided long ago whether Guy Ritchie’s charm outweighed his failings, but even the most dubious should agree the latest project, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare , seems a sweet spot in his work. Sold as a subversive romp across exotic isles, The film’s story focuses on a rakish proto-James Bond (Henry Cavill) released from military prison to lead a dirty half-dozen mismatched specialists past Nazi wolf packs and allied patrols into the Spanish Canary Islands for the destruction of a vital U-boat refueling plant. The uncomplicated heroics of charismatic sadists trading endlessly watchable flourishes of deadpan repartee couldn’t be more perfectly tailored to the talents of our breezily brutal heist auteur—and the cold open of bravado with which Anders (a breakout Alan Ritchson) literally disarms Germans beyond number launches us into narrative flashbacks at ramming speed, dodging torpedoes all the while. Women, like sports cars, are outfitted to aesthetics of the period and prominently featured because their absence would look weird, but such palpable lack of interest in Eiza Gonzalez’s (lovely, limp) counterespionage rather undercuts efforts toward wringing suspense. As twists fail to appear en route to the blockbuster climax, there’s a succession of pyrotechnic-lit carnage. It’s hard not to compare Inglorious Basterds ’ mean, game-saving Hitler stunt with Ministry’ s persistent cutaways to Churchill pacing doughnuts on his office rug under the burden of ineffable presence. The resemblances to Basterds can’t be ignored, but Ritchie has near doubled the master’s filmography without learning a damned thing. R. JAY HORTON. Bridgeport, Cedar Hills, City Center, Clackamas Town Center, Classic Mill, Division, Evergreen, Lloyd Center, Mill Plain, Oak Grove, Progress Ridge, Regal Fox, Studio One, , Vancouver Mall, Vancouver Plaza.
REBEL MOON – PART TWO: THE SCARGIVER
Director Zack Snyder continues his space-opera take on the Seven Samurai (1954) formula with Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver . Sofia Boutella returns as the warrior Kora, leading the crew she gathered in Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire (2023) against the evil Imperium on the farming moon Veldt. While the first film wasn’t great, it still had enough entertaining world hopping and a swaggering Charlie Hunnam to be able to gain a slight recommendation from me. The Scargiver , however, fails to drive the story into any interesting direction and becomes monotonous with its action. The cast is fine, with Boutella and Djimon Hounsou standing out, but none of them gets any character development to play with outside of some clunky flashbacks. Snyder’s visuals are always dazzling, but do we really need to see wheat harvesting in slow motion? The film runs just over two hours, yet it could have easily been 90 minutes if Snyder didn’t fall back on his favorite frame-rate trick so much. Supposedly, Snyder plans to release R-rated extended cuts of the Rebel Moon films. One can only hope those versions will add more to the characters and include less slow motion. PG-13. DANIEL RESTER.
