Great for covering trekking above 5000m

Easy to get sorted what looks like great coverage for my Kilimanjaro adventure. World Nomads was recommended by my tour company as having the requesite level of cover needed to satisfy local regulations (hiking over 5000 meters altitude).

Filing a claim online can be a challenge.

You have great customer service. I wish the online claim filing process was a little smoother. When filling out a claim online the webpage will say something is not right but does not identify what the issue is and will not let your proceed. You are then literally stuck. I then have to end up calling customer service to get their help. You process the claims very fast which is great.

I dislike the eternal loops on the web…

I dislike the eternal loops on the web site. Click 7% discount for returning customers and it takes you to a login screen which takes you back to the home page, to go round again! And the “already a member click here” doesn’t work. The company is also extremely transactional, not caring how many times you’ve bought their policies in the past or thanking you for your repeated loyalty. I’ve been a customer for over 30 years and this time when buying a policy they said, sorry we don’t cover people over 64. No explanation, apology, reasoning. My years of loyalty were not even worth that!

Hi Alan, We certainly care about our loyal Nomads and we're sorry to hear of your experience with our website - Thank you for bringing this to our attention! Our policies have specific guidelines set by our Underwriters, including age limits. We're sad to have to say goodbye and do hope you will find a policy which is best suited for your future travels 🌍 Ayden ✈️ World Nomads

World Nomads gaming Trust Pilot Reviews

World Nomads has sent two emails in two days asking for Trust Pilot reviews when all we have done is purchased travel & health insurance. There is no way to review how trustworthy World Nomads is unless and until we need to use it. World Nomads is, therefore, artificially gaming Trust Pilot reviews. I hope Trust Pilot puts an end to this kind of gaming otherwise there ratings are meaningless.

Hi Jeff and Fiona, thanks for letting us know. You should have only received one Trust Pilot review request so far ☹. We’re looking into this as we can see how two requests so soon would feel like too much. We ask our Nomads for feedback after purchasing a policy so they can share their experience using our website and setting up a member account. We also welcome feedback after travel or making a claim. Thanks for choosing World Nomads and we hope Sophie has a wonderful rest of her travels in The United States. Babita ✈️ World Nomads

Second time’s a charm

After my first call my experience with World Nomads was terrific! My first call the agent wouldn’t help me with some specific questions and issues I was having related to purchasing a policy, and refused to sell me a policy via phone, but directed me to the online process for both the purchase and my question, which of course wasn’t covered online. I decided to give it another try and am glad I did. Very professional, personable, and helpful agent this time! I will do business with them again, as long as I keep getting helpful and friendly agents.

Not Worldly, apparently.

Not what they say they are. They claim to have worldwide expertise, but when a damaged rental car that was rented in Costa Rica handled differently from a German rental agency (Sixt), they don't understand. The claims people don't read the backup documents, they just send form emails asking for items that don't apply to this situation. I suggest looking elsewhere. Low cost cycling event covereage is excellent.

Nomads provided really helpful service on the phone when I made a query and I also found the web site really easy to use. For cycling events Nomads covers the basics at a far lower cost than anyone else I could find. Great work Nomads I will be a return customer. Cheers Luke

Did not pay out!

I have used World Nomads for over a decade. The first time I had a reason to make a claim for travel interruption they made the claims process onerous and then in the end did not pay out. Will never use them again and do not recommend you do either.

What does World Nomads travel insurance cover?

World nomads single trip plans, which world nomads insurance plan is best for me, can you buy world nomads travel insurance online, what isn’t covered, is world nomads insurance worth it.

insurance-product-card-logo

World Nomads

  • Travelers can extend coverage mid-trip.
  • The standard plan covers up to $300,000 in emergency evacuation costs.
  • Plans automatically cover 200+ adventurous activities.
  • No Cancel For Any Reason upgrades are available.
  • No pre-existing medical condition waivers are available.

World Nomads offers the Standard and Explorer travel insurance plans and excels in sports/activity related travel insurance coverage while offering solid trip delay, baggage delay and lost luggage protections.

The provider offers insurance plans for travel to nearly any country and is available to residents of most countries. In the U.S., World Nomads policies are administered by Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company, a Fortune 100 company offering various types of insurance and financial products.

Here’s what you need to know about World Nomads travel insurance to help you decide which plan makes sense for your trip.

Before you buy a plan, check to see if you already have coverage through a premium travel credit card , and if so, verify whether those limits are sufficient. If they are, standalone emergency medical coverage may be adequate as the travel insurance provided by credit card often excludes healthcare expenses or offers a low limit (the Chase Sapphire Reserve® is one of the few cards to offer emergency medical and dental, however coverage is capped at $2,500 ).

Chase Sapphire Reserve Credit Card

Chase Sapphire Reserve®

World Nomads offers different coverage levels for its travel insurance options, but both qualify as single trip plans.

Single trip plans are designed for individuals who are leaving their home, visiting another destination (or destinations) and returning home. These travel insurance plans are the most comprehensive and provide benefits like trip cancellation, trip interruption and medical coverage.

World Nomads is unique amongst other providers as it is a good fit for adventurous travelers. Its plans automatically include coverage for over 200+ activities, including skiing , rafting, backpacking and bouldering. Note that extreme sports are not covered.

All plans include trip protection, emergency medical insurance , emergency evacuation and coverage to protect your gear.

World Nomads offers two plans, with the latter offering higher limits and additional adventure sports coverage.

The plans can be purchased for trip duration up to a maximum 180 days, and you can extend your coverage mid-trip. The price of the policy will depend on the duration of the trip and the countries that you're visiting.

To see the cost of the insurance plan, you will need to input your trip details, your age and state of residence. Unlike many other insurers, you do not need to include the cost of your trip when searching for a World Nomads policy because trip cancellation and interruption benefits are capped at a specific dollar amount rather than a percentage of money spent.

We input a sample trip of a two-week vacation in December 2023 to Italy by a 30-year-old from Illinois.

World Nomads single trip plan cost

Here are some example World Nomads insurance costs based on our example trip.

world nomads travel insurance costs

Standard Plan

The Standard Plan ($86) is a good choice for those who are satisfied with trip cancellation and interruption coverage of $2,500 or less, do not need rental car damage protection, find the limits to be sufficient and do not need coverage for certain adventure sports.

However, this plan still shines in sports coverage, covering activities like wind surfing and bungee jumping, which are seldom covered by travel insurance companies. A full list of covered sports by plan type is available on the World Nomads site.

Explorer Plan

The Explorer Plan ($155) includes all the benefits of the Standard Plan along with higher limits, rental car damage insurance (in the states where it is available) and adventure sports (e.g., skydiving, heli skiing) coverage.

This choice is also good for those whose trips costs less than $10,000 as this is the maximum trip cancellation and interruption protection.

A Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) upgrade is not offered by World Nomads. If this option is a must, look for a travel insurance company that offers CFAR.

Selecting the appropriate plan for your travels involves understanding which coverage you’d like on the trip.

If you have a premium travel card : If you have a premium travel card that offers an adequate amount of trip cancellation / interruption benefits, you may only need to get a standalone emergency health care policy. For example, The Business Platinum Card® from American Express offers $10,000 per trip and $20,000 per year in trip cancellation benefits . Terms apply. Only the Explorer Plan ($10,000) has a comparable level of trip cancellation protection. Terms apply.

If the coverage provided by your card isn’t adequate or applicable: If you don’t have a premium travel credit card , the coverage provided by your card isn’t sufficient or you didn’t use the card to pay for your trip, then a comprehensive insurance plan like the Standard or Explorer plan might be the best choice.

More chill travelers: If you don’t need adventure sports coverage and your trip costs less than $2,500 (or you already have trip cancellation / interruption benefits from your credit card), the Standard Plan would be sufficient.

Trip insurance plans are filled with exclusions, so you’ll want to pay attention to what is and isn’t covered so there aren’t any surprises. Here are some exclusions you can expect from World Nomads:

Pre-existing conditions: If you’ve sought treatment for any illness or condition in the 90-day period preceding the start of the policy and then seek medical care for the same illness/condition, you may be on the hook for the bill since World Nomads does not cover pre-existing conditions.

Intentional acts: Losses sustained from self-harm, intoxication, drug use or criminal activity are not covered.

Travelers with pre-existing conditions might consider policies from providers like Travel Guard by AIG or Allianz .

» Learn more: The best travel insurance companies right now (World Nomads is on the list!)

World Nomads has been offering insurance since 2002. The company is well established and offers two single trip travel insurance policies to fit many different needs.

Both plans offered by World Nomads include trip cancellation, interruption and delays; emergency accident and sickness medical expenses; emergency evacuation; repatriation of remains; non-medical emergency transportation; baggage and personal effects; baggage delay for outward journeys; rental car damage in certain locations; accidental death and dismemberment; Generali Global Assistance; and adventure sports and activities.

World Nomads does not include Cancel For Any Reason coverage, even as an add on.

You will need to file a claim with the insurer after you’ve incurred costs related to a covered expense. If the claim is approved, you will receive a reimbursement. In some instances, such as baggage delay, World Nomads pays you a fixed amount per day rather than 100% coverage for costs incurred.

World Nomads offers some good travel insurance plans for adventurous, single-trip travelers. This is also a good fit for anyone who is uncertain about their trip length (since you can add coverage during your vacation).

Insurance can be extended mid-trip.

You can insure trips up to 180 days in length — which makes it an attractive option for digital nomads .

Adventure sports coverage is more robust than many other plans.

Simple choice of two plans.

Extreme sports are not covered.

There is no annual plan option. A policy ends once you return within 100 miles of home, even if you’re only home briefly as part of a long trip.

Regardless of your trip cost, trip cancellation and interruption coverage is capped at a dollar amount rather than as a percentage of trip cost. The Standard Plan and Explorer Plan cover trips up to $2,500 and $10,000, respectively. If you’re going on a more expensive trip, you won’t be able to protect the entire trip.

You must be 70 years old or younger to qualify for coverage.

Insurance Benefit: Trip Cancellation and Interruption Insurance

The maximum benefit amount for Trip Cancellation and Interruption Insurance is $10,000 per Covered Trip and $20,000 per Eligible Card per 12 consecutive month period.

Eligibility and Benefit level varies by Card. Terms, Conditions and Limitations Apply.

On my last trip across Europe, I lost a dental filling. Not the worst thing in the world, but overseas, that minor issue could have easily turned into a major expense. Luckily, I had travel insurance, saving me from a potential nightmare .

The thing is, your regular health insurance rarely covers you abroad. That's why having travel insurance is so important . World Nomads promises to protect your trip, your stuff, medical emergencies, and even all those adventurous activities you might try.

But does World Nomads actually live up to that promise? Whether you're an adrenaline junkie or, like me, prefer a leisurely stroll and a good restaurant, this review will help you decide. Ready to find out if it's worth it? Let's dive in!

What We Like About World Nomads Travel Insurance

Getting protected is fast and easy.

One of the best things about World Nomads is how quick and simple they make it to get covered. Everything's done online – you can get a quote and buy your policy in just a few minutes, all on their website .

Your coverage kicks in as soon as your trip starts . And if you're the type who sometimes forgets things during pre-trip excitement (I know I do!), no worries. You can still get protected while you're already on the road , though there might be a short 72-hour waiting period.

Here's a quick rundown of how this travel insurance works:

World Nomads Summary of Plan Benefits

Plans are flexible and comprehensive

World Nomads always have the right plan for your trip, whether you're off on a short adventure or settling in abroad for a while. Let's break down what they've got.

Standard Plans vs. Explorer Plans

Word Nomads Travel Insurance Standard and Explorer Plans

World Nomads keeps things simple with two main plans: Standard and Explorer . Both cover the essentials like medical emergencies, cancellations, and your gear. Naturally, Explorer plans boost your coverage limits and protect more activities – but they also cost a bit extra .

Here's a quick side-by-side to make the comparison easier:

  • Trip protection : Stuff happens, unfortunately. Both plans have your back if you need to cancel for reasons like a family emergency or a natural disaster. Standard plans cover up to $2,500 , Explorer bumps that up to $10,000.
  • Emergency evacuation: This covers transportation if a serious situation arises, like a family member passing away or needing urgent hospitalization. Standard offers up to $300,000 , Explorer up to $500,000 .
  • Emergency medical care: Accidents and sudden illnesses can happen anywhere. Both plans have you covered for up to $100,000 for those unexpected medical needs.
  • Lost or damaged gear: Take it from someone who's been there – this is very important! Both plans help replace your damaged, lost, or stolen bags, tech – all the important stuff. Standard covers up to $1,000, Explorer up to $3,000.
  • Activities: They cover over 200 activities , but if you're an adrenaline junkie, definitely double-check what's included. More on that later in this review!
  • Accidental Death: Standard plans will pay a death benefit of $5,000 , if you pass away because of an accident or are dismembered. Explorer plans will pay $10,000 .

Single and Multi-Destination Coverage

World Nomads works whether you're sticking to one country or traveling to multiple destinations .

Their multi-destination plans make things super easy – a huge relief if something like your passport goes missing on the road!

Long-Term Coverage

If you're a US-based digital nomad , World Nomads has you covered for up to 6 months at a time .

And if you're loving your temporary home abroad and those 6 months fly by, renewing your policy is extremely easy – it kicks in right at midnight the next day .

Adventure Without Worry with World Nomads

They cover your favorite activities, wherever you roam.

They cover over 200 activities

World Nomads Travel Insurance Covered Activites and Sports

Let's be honest, if you were just going to work the whole time, you might as well stay home! World Nomads gets that exploring is a major part of the digital nomad lifestyle! So, they offer one of the best travel insurances for adventurous travelers, covering over 200+ activities .

In their Standard plans alone, World Nomads covers over 70 sports and activities, including:

  • Soccer (or football, whichever you prefer!)
  • Weight training
  • Martial arts

Explorer plans go even further! But hey, every insurance plan has its limits, and super high-risk activities usually aren't included. So, before you start packing those hiking boots or your scuba gear, be sure to double-check their website for the full list of what's covered .

Some Things to Keep in Mind about World Nomads Travel Insurance

Common exclusions still apply.

Like any insurance, World Nomads has some limits on what they'll cover. If you get hurt doing something illegal, while under the influence, or that's considered seriously reckless...chances are World Nomads won't be covering you .

Pre-existing medical conditions also tend to be excluded . For this reason, it's always smart to read the not-so-fun parts of your policy – those exclusions – to make sure you understand them and ultimately find the best travel insurance for your circumstances.

It's not the cheapest option out there

World Nomads is perfect for adventurous travelers . But for someone like me whose main sport in the morning is a gentle yoga routine, or a dip in the ocean, you might find more budget-friendly travel insurance options .

After all, World Nomads covers a ton of riskier activities and emergency medical care , which understandably comes with a slightly higher price tag .

To give you an idea, a World Nomad Standard plan for a 45-year-old US resident traveling to Europe for 90 days (about 3 months) is roughly 3% more expensive than a comparable SafetyWing plan . That difference gets even bigger for younger travelers – almost twice as much for someone who's 25.

Customer service reviews are mixed

While World Nomads offers 24/7 emergency assistance (which is crucial!), their everyday customer service gets mixed reviews.

World Nomads travel insurance has 3.4 out of 5 stars on Trustpilot. There, you'll find plenty of happy customers praising their easy claims process and the support they felt in a crisis .

World Nomads Travel Insurance positive Trustpilot review

But, others mention issues with missing paperwork, their website, or frustrating claims experiences .

World Nomads Travel Insurance negative Trustpilot review

It's not ideal for long-term travelers

World Nomads does offer plans for longer trips, but if you're planning to be away for more than 6 months, there are some things to keep in mind:

  • Coverage gaps: Ugh, the worst. Your policy will automatically expire after 6 months , and when you renew, there's a waiting period before your new coverage starts . Not ideal! Other travel insurance companies like Safetywing or Genki let you extend your policy without any breaks in coverage – kind of like a subscription service, which is definitely easier.
  • Prices can vary: World Nomads prices your policy based on where you're going. Some other companies offer a flat rate for multiple destinations, which could potentially save you some money.
  • Pre-existing conditions aren't covered : As discussed before in this guide, World Nomads excludes treatment for pre-existing conditions. You might find other travel insurance companies that provide that for long-term digital nomads or expats .

Making a Claim with World Nomads

World Nomads makes the claims process as straightforward as possible with an online guide – that's always a good sign!

World Nomads Travel Insurance online guide to making a claim

But remember, they're not your everyday travel medical insurance . They're designed for those unexpected emergencies – hospital stays, evacuations, those major situations. For smaller issues, you'll probably need to pay upfront and get reimbursed later . And if it's a serious emergency, always contact their emergency assistance team first!

How you file a claim might change slightly based on your location, but the general process is the same:

World Nomads Travel Insurance Claim Process

Collect your receipts and keep them safe! You'll need them.

Head to their website , log in (or create an account) and click "Make a claim".

Select your policy in their dashboard and file a separate claim for each incident .

Answer their questions regarding your claim.

List your expenses and provide answers to their questions.

Upload those receipts and any other supporting documents they request.

Submit your claim – you'll receive an email confirmation from Trip Mate and your claims number.

If any further information is required, you'll be contacted by Trip Mate . Once all your information is received, they will make a determination about your claim within 20 business days . Claims are paid by electronic email or check .

Are There Any Travel Insurance Alternatives to World Nomads?

World Nomads isn't the only product on the travel insurance map. Other companies offer travel plans with different features and coverage amounts. Let's see the top alternatives.

safetywing, a travel insurance alternative to World Nomads

SafetyWing offers pay-as-you-go coverage at affordable rates in over 180 countries . Their plans are nomad-friendly as you can pay upfront for a specific amount of time or continuously every 4 weeks, with the right to cancel at any time . Medical care doesn't have to be provided by a medical professional within their network, so you can visit any local provider and then file a claim.

The downside is the maximum amount of coverage they provide is $250,000 for medical coverage, property, and travel delay.

genki, a travel insurance alternative to World Nomads

Genki provides both travel insurance and international health insurance . Their travel insurance plans resemble other policies regarding medical care, activities, and emergency transport. Where Genki really stands out is with its international health insurance plan, Genki Resident . This coverage is most like a comprehensive health insurance plan. It covers pre-existing conditions, check-ups, mental health treatments, pregnancy and more . You can choose a deductible to lower the cost of your travel health insurance and choose between the Standard and Premium of their international plans.

Heymondo, a travel insurance alternative to World Nomads

Heymondo offers annual multi-trip coverage and travel insurance with varying benefit levels to choose from. You can download their app to get assistance at the drop of a dime. You can chat, make emergency calls, and manage incidents all through the app.

The Bottom Line

World Nomads deserves kudos for becoming one of the first travel insurance companies to consider the needs of digital nomads , way before the world went remote due to Covid-19.

But the world of travel insurance has expanded since then , and so have our options as frequent travelers. If you're the type who needs coverage for serious adventure activities, World Nomads is still a great option. But, for those of us who prefer a budget-friendly plan with solid basics, there might be better deals out there .

So, before you commit to World Nomads, check out other travel insurance companies . You just might find the perfect fit for your travel style (and your wallet!).

My go-to travel insurance

I've used World Nomads a lot and have had two occasions where I've needed to claim. Their claim process is a bit convoluted but they've paid out promptly and with little fuss.

Expats beware!

I had a horrible experience with World Nomads in 2017. I know that it's now 2022, but I want to prevent anyone in a similar situation from being scammed. I am a US citizen and permanent resident in Australia and World Nomads refused to pay for my expenses incurred during a flight cancellation from Dubrovnik to Singapore due to bad weather. World Nomads AU claimed that I should have gotten a World Nomads US policy and World Nomads US claimed that I should have gotten a policy from World Nomads AU since I am a permanent resident. I went in circles, eventually speaking with the World Nomads US VP and they never paid me a penny. If you are an expat abroad STAY AWAY from World Nomads.

What World Nomads Is Known For

Originally founded in 2002, World Nomads is a reputable travel insurance provider known for its robust coverage of adventure sports, emergency medical expenses and emergency medical evacuation. More than 200 adventure activities are automatically covered in the company's plans, whereas you may have to get an adventure sports waiver if you went with a different insurance company. Examples of covered activities with World Nomads include scuba diving, mountain biking, bungee jumping, water-skiing and even free diving up to 197 feet (depending on which plan you pick).

The company offers two travel insurance plans that can apply to most trips: the Standard Plan with essential coverage and the Explorer Plan with higher policy limits and more included benefits. In addition to automatically covering a range of listed adventure activities, both plans from World Nomads provide coverage for travel accidents, trip cancellation, baggage and gear, acts of terrorism, emergency medical expenses, and even death overseas.

One area where World Nomads is truly lacking is in its available add-on coverages travelers can use to customize their plans. This travel insurance provider doesn't offer optional benefits like cancel for any reason (CFAR) insurance, interruption for any reason (IFAR) insurance or a preexisting conditions exclusion waiver for existing medical conditions.

World Nomads Travel Insurance for Single Trips

While many other travel insurance providers list the coverage limits for individual benefits within their travel insurance plans online, World Nomads states on its website that some of the plan benefits vary based on the plan you choose and you should consult the plan documents for full details. However, applying for a free quote from World Nomads reveals the same available coverages in every state we checked.

With that in mind, the chart below shows how the two plans from World Nomads work, what coverages are included and what policy limits are likely to apply if you purchase one of the company's travel insurance plans as a U.S. resident. All coverage amounts listed below apply to each person insured in the plan.

As you can see in the chart above, the World Nomads Standard Plan offers fewer coverages and lower limits than the Explorer Plan. Here's a rundown of the ideal customer for both types of coverage:

  • Standard Plan: With lower policy limits overall and minimal coverage for trip cancellation and interruption ($2,500 maximum for each), the Standard Plan can still be a good deal for adventure travelers taking part in a low-cost trip. This plan comes with $100,000 in emergency medical expense coverage and includes protection that applies if the traveler takes part in one of more than 200 covered adventure sports. Coverage for emergency medical evacuation is also generous, with a policy limit of $300,000.
  • Explorer Plan: While the Explorer Plan from World Nomads has the same $100,000 coverage limit for emergency medical expenses, it offers higher limits for other included benefits. For example, coverage for emergency medical evacuation is increased to $500,000, and trip cancellation and interruption benefits each come with their own limit of $10,000. You can also get higher coverage limits for trip delays and baggage and personal effects. The Explorer Plan also covers more adventure sports than the Standard Plan.

Once again, we must reiterate that World Nomads does not provide coverage for preexisting medical conditions. You also cannot use this provider to get CFAR coverage , which lets you cancel your trip for any reason at all and get a percentage of your prepaid travel expenses back.

It's also important to note that World Nomads' travel insurance coverage is secondary to other insurance coverage you have. If you pay for a trip within the United States where your own health insurance would apply and you become injured, for example, you wouldn't file a claim with World Nomads until your own health insurance coverage had been exhausted.

Another example: If your luggage is lost in transit, secondary coverage means you would apply with your airline for reimbursement first.

How much you'll pay for travel insurance depends on which World Nomads plan you choose (Standard or Explorer), as well as the specifics about your trip. The ages of insured travelers, destination, length of trip and destination can play a role in premiums. Interestingly, World Nomads doesn't even inquire about the total cost of your trip before offering a free quote. This is likely due to their low limits for trip cancellation and interruption for both the Standard and Explorer plans.

To give you an idea of what you'll pay for premiums, we applied for quotes for a range of different trips through World Nomads. The chart below shows the premiums we were shown for trips in May 2024.

World Nomads, Inc. is not accredited by the Better Business Bureau (BBB), where it also has an average star rating of 1.06 out of 5 stars across a minimal number of user reviews. Unfortunately, the company also has an "F" rating on its BBB profile page.

Reviews for World Nomads on Trustpilot are slightly more encouraging, although the company has an average star rating of 3.4 out of 5 stars out of more than 2,400 user reviews. Some reviewers share a positive experience about using the company, whereas others complain about nonpayment of claims and getting the runaround when they needed help.

Here's an overview of some positive and negative user reviews from World Nomads.

Sooooo glad I bought this

Sooooo glad I bought this trip insurance. They were a lifesaver… literally! I landed shortly after a terrorist event. They got me out swiftly and safely. They called me to personally explain the benefits and the claims process was straightforward. The representatives I spoke to were caring and resourceful. I had delayed baggage, trip interruption and emergency evacuation and all were smooth. I will be buying from World Nomads for ALL of my future trips. I would give them 10 stars if I could. – J. Patterson via Trustpilot

Exceptional Service

World Nomads provided me exceptional service. All my questions were answered clearly and in a timely manner. I unfortunately had to make a claim, and the policy performed exactly as described. The staff assistance and online claims process was simple and straightforward. My claim was paid promptly and with no problems. This is the second time I have used this company and I will continue to use them for future travel insurance. – Joseph D. via Trustpilot

Didn't Get Compensated

First flight was delayed due to mechanics on the plane. Missed connection and then missed 3 more connections, one a snorkel live-aboard ship. We had to pay $2000 to catch another boat to take us deep into Raja Ampat to get to our ship. This is EXACTLY why we bought insurance. But when we did a 2 am ticket change in the airport after missing connection, we lost our trail of the first flights!! Our reservation was for 24 hours later and couldn't prove that we missed the connection. World Nomads gave us a measly $500 against $3000 of changes we had to make. – M. Varrin via Trustpilot

They outsource their coverage to a group who provides no contact information, email or phone number and does not respond to claims. World Nomads was once a decent travel insurance provider, but they are a total racket now. – Maryann B. via Better Business Bureau

Absolutely no modification options

This company offers no options for policy modification. My trip plans changed so I wanted to add an additional country to my policy. For some reason they said it's not possible and I would have to buy a completely new policy, even though my current one is still active for the next 3 months. How is this not an option for a company that is promoted to backpackers with changing plans? Will never use again. – Dillon P. via Trustpilot

I broke my leg in Pakistan last Fall

I broke my leg in Pakistan last Fall. I was in a full leg cast. Had to fight tooth & nail with Trip Mate to get upgraded to a business class seat for the trip home to the U.S. You put my girlfriend who was also covered back in economy. Our return was delayed two days. Won’t be using your services again or recommend you to others.

Date of experience : March 08, 2018

Reply from World Nomads

Hi Lee, I hope your leg is on the mend. Policies are there to help travelers when medically necessary. If it wasn't medically necessary for your girlfriend to fly business class, the team wouldn't have approved it. All the best, Matt Customer Experience Specialist World Nomads.

Quick turnaround

Raesonably priced coverage with hassle free claim payment.

When a family tragedy caused us to return early from Africa, World Nomad refunded the cancelled tour costs hassle free.

VERY BAD CLAIM HANDLING IN ALL ASPECTS

Hi Elie, If you want me to follow up on anything, please email [email protected]. All the best, Matt Customer Experience Specialist World Nomads.

Step up World Nomads and stop taking advantage.

When you spend $900 plus on insurance, you're sure hoping it's going to kick in when it's needed. I realize there are not a ton of options for international health insurance but that doesn't give World Nomad's carte blanche. I had to go to the emergency room in Portugal for a sever sore throat. It was $100 (not even). Want to take a guess how long it took me to get reimbursed when I got home? How about 5 months? I had to jump through (too many to count) hoops. It was less about the money and more about principle. Step up World Nomads and stop taking advantage.

Hi Monique, Thanks for your review. For U.S travelers our travel insurance is secondary insurance. So there is a process of claiming through a primary insurer before the team can pay a claim. If they have all the documentation they require, they work to strict turnaround times. All the best, Matt Customer Experience Specialist World Nomads.

I really love World Nomads

I really love World Nomads. I have not hesitated to buy the insurance for every trip I've taken since I found them. They have seen me through 15 countries, and counting. I had a medical emergency and ended up needing them to evacuate me and they were right there. I did find the hoops I was asked to go through while I was in country, very sick, a bit much (I was in an emergency room with an IV in my arm and the company was constantly asking for my ID, and tickets, and needed me to fill out and sign paperwork and send it back before they could start my evacuation. All this to be done in a third world hospital with a cell phone. The evac company was horribly embarrassed, but said the insurance co insisted. I dread to think what would have happened if I had not been able to take care of myself in that emergency). Other than that, this company is awesome. They are inexpensive, yet really good and CLEAR coverage. Not only would I, but I have recommended them to everyone! Thanks!

I had absolute nightmare experience…

I had absolute nightmare experience dealing with my claim. It's been 8 months and 2 of my claims are still pending... these people will do everything I. There power to steal and try and make you give up o your claims.. I do not recommend them... maybe after this I will get some answers... just to add to this review. I was co tracked by world nomads from my review asking me to contact them so they could help expodit my situation. So I send an email explaining my situation and it took weeks for them to contact me again asking for me to resubmit what I have already done. These peopl seem to be a sam. If they actually cared about me a d my experience they would have contacted me directly so I can put an end to this whole mess. Instead they continue to play games.. go so.ewhere else. They seem like the kind of people that will say anything to make it look like they care but actually don't care at all..

It's been 4 months and I still have not…

It's been 4 months and I still have not been reimbursed for my lost items from travel. What is the point of insurance if they won't cough up the money when something actually goes wrong?

Hi Andrew, Please send your details to [email protected] and I'll look into it right away. All the best, Matt Customer Experience Specialist World Nomads.

Beware of the fine print

Beware of the fine print! If you buy the standard coverage (through Tripmate) and if expensive items like binoculars, cameras, or phones are lost or stolen, you will be subject to a $500 per item limit after depreciation! And with a maximum limit of $1000, you could easily be out of pocket by more than $500-$800! While the customer service representatives were very nice, don’t expect to be able to talk to them at your convenience - interminable waits on hold, then shuttled to a call-back schedule later in the day or the following day. Finally, if my experience is representative, expect to wait at least 1-2 months before receiving a payment.

Replaced a pair when one was lost.

I lost one glove of a pair of Black Diamond ski gloves while in Japan. After submitting all required information a check for the full replacement price was mailed in a few weeks. Make sure to keep your boarding passes, I would have if I had known before hand that I would find them useful when making a claim. Lesson learned, next trip I used World Nomads again and kept my boarding passes, I also managed to hold onto everything else so I didn't need them. Will use World Nomads again in the future.

My claim took almost a month to…

My claim took almost a month to process. I wasn't advised of the status except when it was received. I couldn't't tell on line in my account what was happening. It seemed it just fell into a black hole so I had to call 2 times to find out if it was being processed. The forms to file a claim were very cumbersome and the documentation excessive.

Buying the insurance through World…

Buying the insurance through World Nomad was easy enough and reasonably priced. The several other times we purchased, we never needed to file a claim. So, getting emails advising the policy was due to expire and asking if we needed to extend was fine. But...beware of an incredibly slow process if you need to file a claim. Slow, inaccurate recording of activity (submissions, conversations) on the website portal and the unresponsiveness or delays to emails and phone calls is inexcusable.

This is more directed at the company…

This is more directed at the company that managed the claim on my insurance - Trip Mate. Put simply, my experience with Trip Mate during the claims management process was so poor that I will not purchase travel insurance through World Nomads again. First off, the process took an unacceptable amount of time - nearly two months from when I first submitted my claim (which was a simply, straightforward claim that involved no follow-up questions or materials requested from Trip Mate). Second, the customer service was somewhere between overtly rude to disdainful. Three times I reached out to Trip Mate via email to request the status of my claim. The first time I received no response. The second time I received a response - but only after I copied World Nomads on the email - and the response was lacking and rude. The third time I received a similar poor response - after a week and a half. A simply search online will find horrendous reviews for Trip Mate. World Nomads has a great reputation, but if it continues to partner with a company like Trip Mate, it will only serve to harm the goodwill it has in the industry and drive away loyal customers such as myself.

Hi David, Your feedback around Tripmate is taken seriously and I am going to take it up with them. Thanks for taking the time to write your review. It helps us a lot with training programs. All the best, Matt Customer Experience Specialist World Nomads.

Outstanding customer service

Excellent customer service and they stand behind their offerings!

Hi Rob, Thanks for you review. We aim for excellent customer service and absolutely stand behind our offerings. Thanks for your review. All the best, Matt Customer Experience Specalist World Nomads.

Sign up was easy and refund timely.

Sign up was easy and most economical of choices. System worked well when I needed to cancel trip, though ir did not go directly through World Nomads (needs mire updront explanation on why). A bit slow for the payment and on a paper check which did not work with mobile deposit. Would go with World Nomad again for trip insurance.

Hi Rita, Thanks for your review. As an international company, we do have various underwriters to support our travelers, depending on their country of residence. When going through our purchase path, we try to make it as a clear as we can as to which underwriter you'll have. I'm sorry if this wasn't as clear as it could be. All the best, Matt Customer Experience Specialist World Nomads.

Excellent service. Highly recommend.

I went on a trekking trip to the Himalayas and thought it would be a good idea to purchase travel insurance with World Nomads. Sure enough, my group and I had to take an unplanned helicopter ride out of one of the airports because the flight we had scheduled was shut down due to high winds. The next flight out would have thrown our schedule off completely, thus preventing some of us from ultimately making our final flights home. Once back in the States, I submitted my claim for the helicopter ride from Jomsom to Pokhara (be sure to hold onto all receipts and documentation!), and World Nomads covered the cost. The claim service was excellent. I plan to use World Nomads again.

Hi Rachel, It's absolutely a great idea to hold on to all of your receipts. Without them, we can't assess a claim. I hope you enjoyed your time trekking in the Himalayas. I can't really think of a better place to go trekking. Thanks for taking the time to review us. All the best, Matt Customer Experience Specialist World Nomads.

Haven’t finished my claim and it’s been 3 months. Don’t reply to emails. Not helpful over the phone. Expensive.

Great as Long and You Don't Submit a Claim

Bought a travel policy online. That was easy. Got an earache around Christmas time and contacted On Call International for local doctors (as instructed in the policy docs). They provided some docs and clinics real quick. I went to the clinic (for $100) and was prescribed meds ($30) so $130 total claim. To fill out the claim form and assemble the claim paperwork took me more than three hours ... and I fill out and file forms for a living (I'm an accountant). I'm not lying or exaggerating. My claim was 26 pages long once I filled out all their forms and provided the required documents. All this for an earache that cost $130 to treat. You would think they simply need the doctor diagnosis and billing plus prescription and billing. Nope. The claims processor demanded proof that I paid for my trip, proof that I paid for the medical insurance, proof that I paid the doctor, proof that I paid the pharmacy (even though I had to already submitted the receipts for the expenses). About two and a half months later they mailed me a check, so at least least my time was rewarded, but not worth it once I consider my hourly rate for filling out forms. The peace of mind of having a travel policy is great. Just don't get sick because it's going to take you a very long time to file your claim and get your money back.

Hi Haywood, Thanks for your review. I hope that your health has improved and that you're fighting fit. I've passed your email on to our insurance partner for U.S residents, Tripmate, and have asked them to look into why so many forms were necessary. All the best, Matt Customer Experience Specialist World Nomads.

World Nomads came though for me and…

World Nomads came though for me and reimbursed my claim! I had an unknown infection on a outer island in Indonesia and had to visit the local clinic and ER on Lombok. All I had to do was fill out their forms and provide copies of the receipts and within a month or so they mailed me the reimbursement. Thank you World Nomads!

Hi Andrew, Thanks for your review and your kind words. I hope your ear infection has cleared up. A few of our guys go up to Indo frequently, and know the kind of illnesses you can get there. All the best, Matt Customer Experience Specialist World Nomads.
