Solo Travel in Yosemite

Yosemite National Park abounds in natural beauty and opportunities for adventure and discovery in a relatively safe, welcoming environment. This makes it an ideal destination for solo female travel.

Yosemite National Park has World-Famous Scenery

Yosemite’s iconic landscapes are famous the world over – from the dizzying heights of cliffs like El Capitan to the roar of spring waterfalls or the unique façade of Half Dome rising up over Yosemite Valley. Soaking in the sweetness of that natural beauty is just as easy on your own as with a group, except that on a solo trip you don’t need to make any compromises. See the things you want to see and do the things that you want to do the most.

Yosemite Brims with Activities for the Solo Traveler

Carol Coyle loves solo-hiking in Yosemite National Park.

Carol Coyle has been enjoying solo hiking in Yosemite for decades. Be sure to get her best tips for making the trip special.

With more than 750 miles of trails, studded with scenic overlooks and natural wonders around every bend there is enough for a lifetime of exploration. Choose from popular trails with plenty of company or opt for the path less traveled for more alone time. The solo traveler will find herself with a wealth of choices to design the trip of her dreams.

At 83 years old, Carol Coyle has visited many different destinations, and often travels alone, especially now that her husband has passed. However, Yosemite is the spot that has captured her heart.

You’d be hard-pressed to find a Yosemite hike that Carol hasn’t enjoyed over the years. Although she visited Yosemite often with her young family back in the 70s, hiking was often her own special activity. For her, Yosemite’s trails have provided treasured alone time, a healthy distance from her to-do list, and a way to find spiritual comfort and healing. Although it’s hard to pick a favorite, some of the trails she recommends include the Four-Mile Trail and Panorama Trail. When it’s running, you can take a bus from Yosemite Valley to Glacier Point and walk back downhill to your car!

Purple flowers blooming in Wawona

Spring means gorgeous carpets of wildflowers like these lupines. Enjoy the open meadows near Wawona during your visit.

Carol also recommends the Wawona Meadow Loop as a peaceful easy trail that is located close to the vacation rental cabin that she now owns inside Yosemite in the community of Wawona.

For those looking for a little more interaction, there are plenty of opportunities for that in Yosemite too. Join a group on a free ranger-led walk to dive deep into a topic of interest. Sign up for a rock climbing lesson, guided hike, or a horseback riding tour at the Wawona Stables or Yosemite Trails in nearby Fish Camp. There are art classes for all abilities, photography walks, and so much more.

Yosemite also brims with opportunities to learn more about the park and its natural ecosystems. In addition to group activities, there are many trails like the one through the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias not far from Wawona that include interpretive signs that share the stories of these ancient and magnificent trees. Historic exhibits like the Yosemite Museum in Yosemite Valley or the Yosemite History Center in Wawona help put the park into perspective.

Where to Stay

Coyles Cabin, managed by The Redwoods In Yosemite

Carol’s home, Coyles Cabin, with 3 bedrooms and 2 baths might be a bit big for most solo travelers, but it is one of many managed by The Redwoods In Yosemite. Be sure to check out their selection of rental cabins in Yosemite for something that is the perfect fit for you.

When Carol is away, her home, Coyle’s Cabin , is managed as a vacation rental by the Redwoods In Yosemite . When Carol travels she always prefers a vacation rental. She loves having all the comforts of home, including a kitchen of her own so she can save money and prepare the foods that she enjoys most. Plus, cabins tend to be situated “closer to nature”, and she’d gladly trade a bustling lobby area for a private deck where she can easily wander outside to enjoy the sounds of nature or look up at the stars.

Carol also appreciates the fact that the Redwoods In Yosemite is based in Wawona. For a solo traveler, it’s comforting to know that the staff is just up the street if she needs anything. Because they live and work in the area, the Redwoods In Yosemite staff are also a helpful resource for current conditions and can provide an insider’s perspective on what to expect. Many repeat visitors at the Redwoods In Yosemite stop in at the front desk just to say hello and catch up on what’s new.

Safety Considerations on a Solo Trip

In addition to the reassuring presence of a local vacation rental property management staff, Carol prefers National Park destinations in general when she is traveling alone. As she puts it, there are no “bad neighborhoods” to watch out for when exploring inside a national park. So, you can feel assured that you’ll be in a neighborhood where you can feel safe.

Naturally, when traveling alone, it’s important to be aware of your surroundings and be responsible for yourself. Because it’s possible to choose more traveled or less traveled destinations to explore, in Yosemite it’s easy to find just the right level of adventure for you. Still, remember to let someone know what you’re plans are, so they know when to expect you back, and can let someone know if you haven’t returned as planned.

In her many years of exploring Yosemite, Carol has never had to call on Yosemite Search and Rescue. However, just knowing that the Yosemite Search and Rescue staff and medically trained park rangers are some of the best search and rescue outfits in the nation also provides some reassurance.

With the many things for a solo/female traveler to do and discover it’s easy to see that Yosemite National Park is one of the best destinations for getting out and discovering nature safely and on your own terms.

Solo Female Travel to Yosemite

Yosemite calls and you must go. What inspires you to want to take a solo female trip to Yosemite? Whether it’s solitude in nature, meeting new people and trying new things, arts and culture, majestic landscapes, or the challenge of pushing your own physical limits, Yosemite Mariposa County has everything you need to plan your trip according to what you seek for your unique experience.

Located less than four hours east of the San Francisco Bay Area and within a few hours of several international airports, Yosemite National Park covers 1,200 square miles of California’s beautiful Sierra Nevada. Outside of the famous granite cliffs and waterfalls in Yosemite Valley, there are endless opportunities for adventure. Giant Sequoia, alpine lakes, granite peaks, meadows, and winding rivers await.

Planning Your Visit

solo travel yosemite

You’ve already started with the first step. Local tips and resources will help to guide you the rest of the way. As you plan your trip, remember that it’s important not to over plan! Make sure your schedule includes free time for spontaneity and downtime.

Your trip may include highlights of everything in the park, or just Yosemite Valley. Consider coming in Spring or Fall when the park is quieter. Winter in Yosemite is a completely different experience compared to the rest of the year and there are a variety of winter activities to enjoy including skiing at Badger Pass Ski Area in Yosemite.

Cover the basics during your adventure and stay aware when traveling alone. Become familiar with hiking trails and communicate your plans and expected return with someone before you go. Carry a whistle and pepper spray. Many areas in the park lack cell service. Printed or downloaded digital maps are recommended when hiking alone. In Yosemite, the weather varies and can change on a dime. Visit the park’s website and stay current with alerts, conditions, and camping information.

Where to Stay

Yosemite RV road trip

Yosemite Mariposa County lodging options provide a traditional experience, with full-service housekeeping, convenient dining rooms and more. Sometimes the best place to stay is the one closest to nature. Campgrounds in Yosemite National Park are the most in-demand campgrounds in the region, with good reason. However, and that makes getting a reservation a formidable task.

In the Park:

Curry Village tent cabins with autumn foliage

There are several lodging options located within the park. Decide where to stay once you’ve explored the activities that most interest you. The Yosemite Valley Lodge is located near Yosemite Falls, and  a shuttle stop is nearby. To experience all the grandeur of Yosemite, book a room at the famous Ahwahnee . Tenaya at Yosemite is just outside of the park and close to the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoia.

For the glamping experience complete with showers and restaurants nearby, treat yourself to a tent cabin at Curry Village .

Be aware that Yosemite’s campgrounds are in high demand during the summer season and should be reserved online well in advance. Camp 4 is a walk-in campground only available by online lottery during summer.

Outside of the park:

The spa / hot tub at the Yosemite Bug Rustic Mountain Resort.

Expand your experience by staying in one of Yosemite’s charming gateway towns. Stay at a bed and breakfast or book a room at one of the many hotels located in Mariposa County . Most shops and dining in downtown Mariposa are within walking distance of the River Rock Inn , which has an onsite café, Sticks, where you can sip small-batch roasted coffee while you read or check your email before heading out for the day.

The Yosemite Bug Rustic Mountain Resort in Midpines is a local favorite that can meet all of your solo female travel needs. Accommodations range from shared hostel rooms to cabins. The June Bug Café has something for everyone including gluten-free and vegan options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, as well as outstanding desserts served nightly. The sauna and hot tub at the spa downstairs are perfect for anyone after a long day of hiking in Yosemite Mariposa County.

Getting to the Park:

YARTS bus provides regional transportation to Yosemite

Leave your car in town and take the YARTS Bus from Mariposa into Yosemite to avoid finding parking and long lines during peak season. The pass includes entry into the park, where free shuttles circle the park throughout the day. Whether you take the bus or decide to drive, it is advisable to arrive early.

Choose your own adventure: A Guided Hike or Rock Climb

Yosemite Mountaineering School climbing guide, Miranda Oakley with Half Dome in the background.

For a guided experience geared towards your specific needs, contact Balanced Rock . Many of their scheduled programs are designed with women in mind and include group events with other solo female travelers. Make it a perfect day by booking a private guided hike with a yoga session in the wilderness, complete with a packed lunch suited to your needs. Pricing and options are available on their website . Their mission is to help you feel supported, confident, and comfortable outside, as well as to make the outdoors accessible for all, so contact them with any budgetary concerns.

Contact the Yosemite Mountaineering School and Guide Service to try rock climbing in one of the most iconic destinations in the world. The only authorized climbing guide service in the park, they also offer guided hiking and backpacking excursions.

Bike or Hike the Valley Floor while you explore Yosemite History

Rent a bike at Curry Village for the best way to get around Yosemite Valley. Biking (or hiking) the Valley is a perfect hybrid adventure of scenic wonder and historic sites to explore. Day hikes with access to most major sights to see in Yosemite are usually well-populated and there are also hikes for those who prefer solitude.

Preparation is key. Expect mosquitos!  You may encounter bears and other wildlife. They are not usually a threat to humans. Avoid these human behaviors while visiting and learn how to interact responsibly with the animals native to the area. A prepared hiker is a happy one. Fortunately, there is no shortage of information about hiking in Yosemite .

Explore History and Culture in Yosemite

Walk through a timeline at the Valley Visitor Center. Discover how millions of years of geologic uplift, erosion, and glacial activity finally gave way to form the valley of “Ahwahnee” now known as Yosemite. Learn more about its original inhabitants, the Ahwahneechee when you visit the Yosemite Museum next door. See examples of basketry made by some of the most renowned indigenous basket weavers in the world.

Adventures in the Sierra Foothills

Trails at Stockton Creek Preserve above Mariposa, CA

Hike one of several easy-to-moderate trails at the Stockton Creek Preserve , or take a guided hike with the Sierra Foothill Conservancy on one of their managed preserves. For a more adventurous hiking experience, contact Mariposa Trails to explore more hiking trails in the Sierra Foothills.

Yosemite E-Biking

A guided tour with Yosemite E-Biking through scenic Mariposa County could include a trip to the airport, where you can take off with Yosemite Skydive to really get a bird’s eye view and leap out of an airplane over the Sierra Nevada.

Explore Mariposa County Arts and Culture

Historic exhibits inside the Mariposa History Center

Get to know the locals at shops and museums . Ridgeline Gallery and Gifts is just one of the shops in town that features an array of local art and unique gifts. The friendly docents and staff at the Mariposa Museum will share the amazing history of Mariposa, including Native American (featured in a brand-new permanent exhibit) and California Gold Rush history. Visit the Yosemite Climbing Association Museum and Gallery and learn about the history of rock climbing in Yosemite.

At night, you’ll have no shortage of entertainment. Mariposa’s growing music scene is largely thanks to organizations like the Mariposa Arts Council, who host Music on the Green every Friday and Saturday at the Mariposa Arts Park during summer. Try a local brew and catch a show at the Grove House with their friendly staff and steady stream of well-known and up-and-coming local artists scheduled year-round.

Yosemite Mariposa County invites you to explore, enjoy solitude, find empowerment, shop, dine, socialize, or simply just…relax. Nothing compares to the sense of freedom and independence that a solo female trip can bring. What better place to experience adventure than Yosemite Mariposa County?

Brochures/tour information should be updated. Covid-19 requirements for example. This did not have even a single mention at the welcome reception or at any time during the tour, despite the brochure, and could have saved some luggage. Sunset cruise at San Francisco is another example where the tour information mentioned included hor d'oeuvres and two drinks, but just one drink was the reality. Tour leader could provide clearer instructions/information by stating 'left' or 'right' rather than pointing saying 'here' or 'there' when she is doing this from the driver's seat and guests at the back of the van cannot see. She was informed of this and asked, but complied only that one time. Last minute guests (not me) who joined the sunset cruise at SFO were ripped off, having to pay USD68pp even if it included a transfer to the wharf whilst the direct operator price was USD36.

Visit Yosemite Solo or With a Group? 8 Tips for Exploring California's Iconic National Park

Visiting Yosemite for the first time is breathtaking—dare we even say life changing—with its incredible landscape and natural attractions. Whether you’re planning a solo Yosemite trip, or you want a to see it with a group (spoiler: we think Yosemite is better when experienced together), we’ve got the key tips to know before you go. EF Ultimate Break Tour Director Tyson, an expert on all things national parks, shares the best ways to see Yosemite (and what not to do!).

solo travel yosemite

by Reid Flynn November 6, 2020

So you want to explore Yosemite? Ready to go all Ruth Dyar Mendehnall (look her up) and capture your wild(erness) side? Great! You came to the right place. There’s so much to see and do at Yosemite National Park, but knowing where to start can feel intimidating.

That’s especially true if you’re visiting Yosemite solo. Do you camp overnight or just spend the day? Join a hiking tour or try to figure out the trails yourself? Kill your phone battery with too many photos of El Capitan or save some life for Cathedral Lake? (Yes, yes to all the photos—bring a portable battery).

At EF Ultimate Break, we love showing travelers the surreal beauty of Yosemite and beyond, like on our US National Parks: California to the Grand Canyon trip (you’ll see Yosemite, Death Valley, Zion, Bryce Canyon and the Grand Canyon—talk about epic). Don’t sweat the details like accommodations, transportation, and local guides —we handle everything—and enjoy the comfort and safety of being with a group of adventure-lovers like you.

No matter what type of Yosemite vacation you’re after (or any of America's glorious national parks out West ), these tips from our Tour Director Tyson can help you be prepared.

1. Get high! As in, change your altitude for jaw-dropping views

You’re here. Yosemite National Park. You’re at ground level, you can see beautiful things all around you. But just like your parents telling you not to fill up on bread, you shouldn’t just settle for what’s directly in front of you. If you really want to see Yosemite, you need to get high—as in, increase your altitude.

“The classic spot to start with is Tunnel View,” says our Tour Director Tyson. No hiking necessary, it’s accessible by car (another thing to consider if you’re visiting Yosemite alone). With EF Ultiumate Break, we include Yosemite’s top attractions in our itinerary , including Tunnel View.

You can look up photos in advance all you want, but nothing will prepare you for seeing El Capitan, Half Dome, and Bridalveil Falls all at once from this surreal vantage point. With pine trees stretching before you for miles, this is an iconic way to start your Yosemite vacation. By all means, look down.

Ground level at the Yosemite Valley Loop.

Top: Yosemite Valley (Mark Brazier/ Unsplash). Left: View of Nevada Fall from John Muir Trail (Ryan OConnor/Unsplash). Right: View of Half Dome from the top of Clouds Rest (Fran/Unsplash)

2. Pick your hike (or do ‘em all)

No matter your level of experience, there’s a rewarding hike for everyone here. Tour Director Tyson has some faves. He says start easy. Spend the day like a pioneer following the old wagon roads of the Valley Loop (make sure to look up!). Or pretend you’re cooling down in the world’s largest lawn sprinkler, getting misted by the powerful Vernal, Nevada, or Bridalveil Falls.

For the bolder and more experienced, Tyson recommends getting into high Sierra wilderness by scaling Cloud’s Rest. Sitting a full 1,000 feet above Half Dome, get a view of the iconic rock like no other. Shoot, you could even just go for a quick little walk and pack a lifetime’s worth of natural beauty into a half hour here. You do you!

El Capitan Meadow in Yosemite National Park.

You may need to squint (or bring some binoculars!), but El Capitan Meadow provides a relaxing spot to watch climbers on the iconic rock formation. Credit: Lu Sea/Shutterstock

3. Watch the insanely impressive (or maybe just insane, depending on your stance) rock climbers from El Capitan Meadow

Legs feel like Jell-O after that hike? Sick and tired of doing things? You earned some idle time. Head to El Capitan Meadow, pop a squat and crane your neck. Watch as the adrenaline junkies scale the 3,000-foot-high granite face.

Even better, pack binoculars and a snack and kill an hour or two tracking the progress of the thrill-seekers who climb El Capitan. The award-winning 2018 documentary, Free Solo , tracked Alex Honnold as he became the first person to scale the entire wall without any ropes or safety equipment. Pretty nuts, right? (Please don’t get any ideas.)

US National Parks: California to the Grand Canyon

11 days. 6 cities.

Highlights: Gaze into the great void of the Grand Canyon. Snap pics of the most famous rocks in America: El Capitan & Half Dome in Yosemite. Hit the lowest (and hottest) point in North America: Death Valley. Stroll over the rock bridges and under the archways at Bryce Canyon. And trek the out-of-this-world terrain of Zion. Oh, and did we mention the sightseeing day in Las Vegas?

See all North America trips →

4. Embrace being off-the-grid

If you wanted to see some of the world’s most pristine natural assets on a screen, you could just watch Planet Earth. Put the phone away and immerse yourself in the real thing in Yosemite. It’s not like you’re going to get much signal out here anyway. (Don’t worry, when you’re back at your hotel you can post all the Instagram stories and TikToks you want.)

But while there, Tyson encourages you to really disconnect from the Internet. “Use your senses and experience nature as it was intended. Maybe you’ll miss a great photo, but the memory will live forever in your mind.” So true, so wise. Even better, the memory will live on not just in your mind, but also in the collective recollection of you and the people you’re sharing the moment with. Group travel truly gives you the ultimate “remember when” stories—something you can’t get from visiting Yosemite solo.

A pathway through the trees at Yosemite National Park, California.

5. Leave nothing but footprints

We have a responsibility to our national parks: to leave them exactly as we found them. That means the obvious stuff like not leaving trash or desecrating a tree with your initials carved into it. But it also means staying on trails at all times and not taking home a souvenir rock for your rock collection.

As Tyson says: “Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints.” And like we said earlier, the less time you spend staring at your phone’s camera frame, the better, at that.

6. Embrace your inner(stellar) night owl

When in Yosemite, you simply must stay up late to hit the clubs. Just kidding. Though you should try and stay up late—and wake up early. Being so far from any major city, and therefore, any major source of light pollution, the stars at night here are like nothing you’ve ever seen before. Here’s an idea: Book your Yosemite trip with us and take the guesswork out of it. Our itinerary includes an optional starry skies excursion; voyage into Yosemite Valley with your Tour Director and fellow trip-goers, lay under the stars, learn about the galaxy above, the meteors, constellations, comets, and folklore of the valley.

And if you’re enough of an early bird, you can watch the most epic sun rises of your life. Forget everything you know about your circadian rhythm—Yosemite’s sights are worth missing a few hours of rest. You can always take a little mid-day nap in the meadow, anyway.

A friendly bear wandering at Yosemite in the distance.

7. Don't feed the bears (it has to be said)

Listen, there’s nothing to be afraid of, but bears do live at Yosemite National Park. You’re in their home, remember. And while they may not all have Paddington’s manners, there’s a few things you can do to stay on their good side. (FYI: This is more relevant for campers who stay overnight in the park. If you’re visiting during the day with a group, the concern is minimal.)

In any case, absolutely do not leave food out, or toss leftover food or snacks on the ground. Instead, Tour Director Tyson says: “Use the bear canisters around the parking areas and trailheads for any and all of your food and toiletries. This is the golden rule of Yosemite.”

This could be you and all your new friends. Credit: ggTravelDiary/Shutterstock

8. Share the stunning Yosemite experience with a group

In our opinion, the best way to really make the most of your Yosemite trip is to share it with others. Experiencing all of this—from the hikes to the surreal views and all the laughs, photos, and “OMG my legs are tired!” moments in between—is simply enhanced with a group. Even if you start out as strangers, you’ll be travel family by the end of your journey.

Without a group, who would take your picture in front of Cathedral Lake, or pass you another hot dog around the fire pit, or stay up late to watch the stars with you? On top of that, it’s always a good idea to hike with others, for your own safety.

If that sounds good to you, consider checking out our US National Parks: California to the Grand Canyon trip . Not only will you be with a group of eager hikers to experience the national parks of the American West, we also take care of every little logistical detail. And you'll have an expert Tour Director like Tyson.

Now go forth and remember that not all who wander are lost—some are trying to remember which bear canister they left the marshmallows in.

A 3 Days in Yosemite Itinerary You’ll Want to Steal

By: Author Contributor

Posted on Last updated: 1st November 2023

Categories Itineraries , USA

Last Updated on 1st November 2023 by Sophie Nadeau

Yosemite National Park , located in California’s Sierra Nevada Mountains, is a natural wonder that attracts millions of visitors every year. From its towering waterfalls to its massive granite cliffs, the park offers breathtaking scenery that is sure to leave an impression on anyone who visits. Here’s your perfect 3 days in Yosemite itinerary to help you plan your next trip!

Half Dome and Yosemite Valley

Introducing Yosemite

Where is yosemite, when to visit yosemite, where to stay in yosemite, is 3 days enough time in yosemite, day 1 – yosemite valley and el capitan, day 2 – hiking in yosemite , day 3 – mariposa grove and glacier point, a final note on planning a trip to yosemite.

Yosemite presents something for everyone. There are tons of hikes ranging from strenuous to very easy. The views are stunning, enough to send any photographer to wonderland. It’s also a great place to bring the family or getaway for a weekend of adventure with your partner (check here for more of the best romantic getaways in the USA ).

With so much to see and do in Yosemite, it can be difficult to know where to start, which is why planning an itinerary is essential. We recommend taking 3 days in this beautiful national park, though you can make it work if you have more or less time.

In this blog post, we’ll take you through a suggested itinerary for your trip to Yosemite National Park, but first let’s talk about some things to know before you visit.

yosemite guide

Yosemite National Park is a 1,200 square mile protected area of wilderness located in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California . It is approximately 140 miles southeast of San Francisco and can be easily accessed from both the Bay Area and the Central Valley of California.

It is one of the most popular places to visit in the USA. If you’re looking to go off the beaten path, then check out these hidden gems of California . For a National Park a little more off the radar, check out the Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks , which are a few hours south of Yosemite.

You can visit this park year-round, but perhaps the best time to visit is in spring or summer. In spring and summer, the falls are flowing; however, in spring you may have to deal with shifting temperatures (it can be hot or cold), and in summer the park is very crowded.

In fall, most of the waterfalls are dry or barely flowing, but the fall colors are beautiful and there are less crowds. Winter is best suited for skiing and snowshoeing, perfect for those who don’t mind gearing up for the cold weather. There can be road closures in the winter, so plan accordingly.

fall in yosemite

When visiting Yosemite National Park, there are several options depending on your budget and preferences. Here are some of the most popular choices:

  • Campgrounds – Yosemite has 13 budget-friendly campgrounds. These are a great option for those who want to experience the great outdoors.
  • Hotels in the park – Yosemite has several lodges located within the park, including the Ahwahnee, Yosemite Valley Lodge, and Wawona Hotel. These lodges offer comfortable rooms but can be expensive during peak season.
  • El Portal – This town is just a ten-minute drive to the park and has a few great places to stay. One of these is the Yosemite View Lodge, which has an onsite restaurant and a nearby convenience store.
  • Vacation rentals or Airbnbs – For those who want more space and privacy, there are a variety of vacation rentals and Airbnbs available in the park and the surrounding areas, including cabins, cottages, and homes.

Regardless of where you stay, book your accommodation well in advance, especially during peak season when the best places fill up fast.

Glacier point

If you’re looking for a quick overview of the National Park and also want to go on a few hikes, then 72 hours is a sufficient amount of time to get an overview of Yosemite. However, if you’re the kind of traveller who prefers to see everything and do multiple hikes, then you’ll want to spend 4 or 5 days in the park.

Suggested itinerary for 3 days in Yosemite National Park

Start your first day in Yosemite by waking up early to catch the sunrise at Yosemite Valley. Here you’ll find several of the sights that Yosemite is known for, including Half Dome, El Capitan, and Yosemite Falls.

Tunnel View is a great place to watch from. As the sun rises, the valley is bathed in a warm golden light, making it the perfect time to take photos and soak in the natural beauty of the park. It’s also a great time to get your bearings for where everything is in the park.

tunnel view

While you’re here, this is a great time to see Yosemite Falls, the tallest waterfall in North America. This waterfall is an incredible 2,450 feet, making it the fifth highest in the world. You can see the falls as you make your way around the valley or take a short trek up to the base of the falls without any difficult hiking.

In the afternoon, get up close and personal with one of Yosemite’s most iconic landmarks: El Capitan. El Capitan is the largest granite monolith in the world (not to mention a popular climbing destination).

El Capitan

With an easy hike from a nearby parking lot, you can walk right up to the base of this mountain of rock to get a real idea of its size. It’s a great spot for pictures!

A day spent in Yosemite Valley will give you a great base for your trip to Yosemite and help you prepare for the next 2 days!

Day 2 is all about hiking. You have several options for hikes, but we’d recommend either Mist/John Muir Trail, Sentinel Dome/Taft Point, or—for serious hikers—the Half Dome Hike.

The Half Dome is only for very experienced hikers, and it requires a permit to hike. These permits aren’t easy to get as they involve entering into a lottery. Only 300 people are allowed to summit Half Dome per day.

If you think you’ve got what it takes, and you manage to get a permit, the Half Dome Hike is said to be one of the best in the world. Find more information about getting a permit here.

Half Dome Trail View

If that hike sounds a little daunting, don’t fret. Yosemite has so many other options. Mist Trail is one of the most popular, and it will take you to two spectacular waterfalls: Vernal Falls and Nevada Falls. You can either go up and back on the Mist Trail or you can take the John Muir trail down, which makes the hike a little more than a mile longer.

This hike is considered moderate to difficult and can take up to 5 hours depending on your experience. If you choose this hike, you can spend the rest of the day relaxing. For dinner you can head to the Pizza Deck at Half Dome Village for some delicious food. Then watch the sunset from pretty much anywhere in Yosemite.

Sentinel Dome is a 2.2-mile, moderate hike where you can get 360-degree views. To the north is Yosemite Valley, and to the east are Nevada Falls, Half Dome, and some gorgeous peaks. South, you’ll find more views that are perhaps a little less stunning, but the west has the Merced River Canyon.

Sentinel Dome

From here you can either do a loop that combines this trail with Taft Point, or you can head back down and do Taft Point separately. It takes less time to do them separately, so do that if you want to squeeze more into your day.

At Taft Point, those brave enough can sit on the edge of a cliff with their feet hanging above Yosemite Valley. Slackliners have been seen at this spot, attempting to cross a slackline thousands of feet in the air.

When you’re done with these, you can stop by Washburn Point to see more amazing views. Depending on what time it is and how tired you are, you can drive up to Glacier Point, but we’ve scheduled that for tomorrow if you’d rather head somewhere for a relaxing meal.

aerial panorama of Washburn Point

On the last day of your trip, head to Mariposa Grove to see the giant sequoias, some of the largest and oldest trees in the world. On average these trees are between 164 and 279 feet tall and many of the trees are over 3,000 years old.

Mariposa Grove

Take a stroll through the grove, and don’t forget to snap a photo of the famous Tunnel Tree. This tree was cut in 1895 for people to be able to move through, and it’s still alive! The grove is also home to the Grizzly Giant, one of the largest sequoias in the world.

After visiting Mariposa Grove, make your way to Glacier Point for some incredible views of the park. From here you’ll be able to see Yosemite Valley—which you’ve thoroughly explored by now—from a new perspective. This is by far the best lookout point to see the valley.

Glacier Point is either the start or the end of three popular Yosemite hikes: the Four Mile Trail, Panorama Trail, and Pohono Trail. So, you can either start here or end here, or you can simply enjoy the view and save the hiking for another time.

These hikes to and from Glacier Point can be challenging but well worth it for the stunning panoramic views of Yosemite Valley and the surrounding mountains, and it’s a great way to top off your trip.

Glacier Point Road

There it is! There’s plenty that we couldn’t include in the itinerary, so extend your trip or head back another time if you can. By following this 3-day itinerary, you’ll get a taste of the best that Yosemite has to offer and create memories that will last a lifetime.

Yosemite National Park is a natural wonder that will take your breath away. With its soaring waterfalls, enormous granite cliffs, and spectacular panoramic views, there’s no shortage of things to see and do in the park. Enjoy your trip and happy hiking!

What Can You Do in Yosemite Alone?

solo travel yosemite

Are you going to Yosemite National Park alone and haven’t completely planned out what to do? You should know that this park is considered one of the world’s most spectacular places. It’s certainly one of the landmarks you should include and prioritize in your bucket list for national parks .

Although you can stay for weeks in Yosemite, you might not have a good time if you don’t know what you can do in your solo escapade. Keep reading so you can start planning your Yosemite National Park adventures!

Must-Have Activities into Your Itinerary

Upon reaching the park’s ground level, you will be able to see the beauty of its entirety. But your journey shouldn’t end there. To get the most of the place, you can go hiking and reach higher elevations. The best place to start with is the Tunnel View. It’s best to drive to this spot when you are alone. After that, you can also include Yosemite’s other attractions in your itinerary.

Whether you are a professional hiker or not, going for a hike is one of the most rewarding experiences. You can wander around the Valley Loops wagon roads and then see the Nevada, Bridalveil, and Vernal Falls! Another thing you can do alone is go for a walk just above Half Dome or Clouds rest . You will get to see a better glimpse of the surrounding wilderness.

Lastly, if you’re an early bird, you can also enjoy the most phenomenal sunrises. Yosemite is worthy of missing some hours of sleep. You can even enjoy hours of napping in the meadow afterward!

Yosemite is Worthy of Exploration

If you’re still not convinced that Yosemite is worth visiting alone, you should know that the park has breathtaking scenery you won’t find anywhere else. The sequoia trees and the vistas also make your journey rewarding.

One of national parks’ pride is their guests’ safety during their trip. Lots of precautions are present to keep travelers from accidents. Signages and park information are there to guide you. There are also a lot of free and rentable vehicles, such as bikes, climbing gears, kayaks, and more!

When planning a  trip to Yosemite, you can also download their app. This can help you decide ahead of time which places to visit and give you details before getting to your actual destination.

Lastly, the park is open all year round. It even accepts visitors during Christmas and Independence Day. This place can give you a chance to experience the beauty of it whenever you decide to.

What Fun Activities Do They Have When Visiting Yosemite National Park Alone?

Engage yourself in joining workshops in Yosemite. It’s one of the ways to have a great time by yourself. During the summer, workshops are led by various artists. There are many different galleries that you can browse from local to regional artists.

Biking is also a great activity to explore the Yosemite Valley further. There are many bike rentals readily available, especially during the year’s warmer months. You can get some fresh air while taking in the beautiful environment and can check out Lake McClure’s crystal clear water. Don’t forget to stop by the National Forest land!

The next thing you can do is go rafting. The Merced River is the ideal place to explore the waters. Aside from that, there are many other spots along the river to go to. River rafting in Yosemite Valley will be a much smoother ride. However, this activity is best done in spring and summer because water conditions are good during those seasons.

What Hikes Are the Best When Hiking in Yosemite National Park Alone?

When paying a visit to Yosemite, trail hiking can give you a better view of the natural scenery. Also, it can allow you to get a chance to witness existing wildlife.

Hike on the Mirror Lake Loop

The granite figures of Half Dome reflect on the crystal clear waters of Mirror Lake. In the late summer, Mirror Lake is best known as a meadow. It will take 3 hours at most to complete the loop.

Hike on the Yosemite Falls Top

If you don’t mind a little bit of danger, hiking to the top of Yosemite Falls can be a thrilling activity. This is North America’s tallest waterfall, and it stands about 2400 feet. Trekking to the top can take up to six hours or more. Once you reach the top, you will have a better and closer view of  Lost Arrow Spire and Half Dome.

Hike on the Lower Yosemite Falls Loop

Hiking this trail from April to June is recommended. The waterfalls at these times are at their peak following the snowmelt. The loop’s eastern side provides easy access to the waterfall and a convenient terrain for visitors. Walking around here will give the relaxing sound of cascading waters. You can also feel its power as it hits the rocks. Furthermore, you can have a nice view of Yosemite falls if you look above.

What Campgrounds Are the Best for Camping at Yosemite National Park Alone?

Here are the best campgrounds around the area to save you from booking a hotel. Most of them are open all year round and situated near the best spots around Yosemite Park.

  • North Pines Campground
  • Upper and Lower  Pines
  • Tuolumne Meadows
  • Indian Flat RV Park
  • Tents and Cabins Village
  • Hodgdon Meadow Campground

What Are the Best Sites to See When Visiting Yosemite National Park Alone?

1. tunnel view.

This spot can get you a good view of the Half Dome, El Capitan, Yosemite Valley, and Bridalveil Fall. This is a famous area so it can get full of tour cars and buses.

2.  El Capitan

This is the go-to place for hikers and rock climbers. It stands approximately 3000 ft. The Nose is its best-known route. It offers a variety of routes to take that beginners and experts may challenge themselves with.

3. Bridalveil Fall

This is one of the most famous waterfalls in Yosemite, with sprays during springtime. The native American tribe of Ahwahneechee believes that inhaling mist coming from this waterfall can increase your chances of getting married.

4. Vernal and Nevada Falls

You can pass through the Mist trail to get a view of these spectacular falls. The trails tend to get slippery brought by the mists. Be sure to wear hiking shoes to be safe. These are the nearest waterfalls to the mountain range of Sierra Nevada.

5. Taft Point and Sentinel Dome

The Sentinel Dome and Taft Point are situated beside each other. It is a good mile walk and can give you a panoramic view of Yosemite. On the other hand, Taft Point is a great place to challenge your fear of heights.

Is Going to Yosemite By Yourself Safe?

If you plan to go to Yosemite by yourself, the answer is yes, it’s safe. The crime rate at this place is greatly low in number. However, you need to protect yourself from wildlife attacks and pay attention to safety hazards. Don’t forget to check the National Park Service’s guidelines.

The Yosemite Park is a Safe and Serene Place to Explore

These are the places and activities you’re free to do alone in Yosemite Park. There is no reason you shouldn’t include this landmark on your next vacation.

One of the attractions you’ll find here is Yosemite falls. But it doesn’t end there. You’ll find many other points of interest that can make your solo adventure even more exciting. Certainly, you won’t run out of things to do.

8 best things to do in Yosemite National Park

Yosemite is a wonderland of adventures – here are our favorites © R. Tyler Gross / Getty Images

Yosemite National Park is one of those dazzling, large-than-life destinations with a beauty that must be seen firsthand to truly appreciate it.

Renowned landscape photographer and environmentalist Ansel Adams introduced much of the public to this iconic park in the 1930s, when he began documenting its magic in black and white. Close to 100 years later, Yosemite remains an iconic photographic locale attracting close to five million visitors each year.

In California’s Sierra Mountains, Yosemite is the third-oldest national park in the US, established in 1890 and home to more than 700 miles of hiking trails, numerous waterfalls and captivating granite cliffs and buttresses with names like Half Dome and El Capitan. You’ll also find towering sequoia trees, diverse wildlife, sparkling turquoise and aquamarine lakes, scenic byways and a historic lodge that takes you back about a century in time.

Here are our top picks for the best things to do in Yosemite National Park.

Hikers climbing Yosemite's rocky Half Dome on a sunny day

1. Summit the iconic Half Dome

If you’ve seen photos or videos of Yosemite, you’ve seen the iconic granite rock that is Half Dome . Towering nearly 5000ft above the Yosemite Valley, it can be spotted from several locations around the park, including Tunnel View, Glacier Point and Mirror Lake, but none is more exhilarating than the view from the summit.

This is not a hike to undertake if you are not active or prepared. A 14- to 16-mile round trip with a 4800ft elevation gain, the trek to the summit is no walk in the park. It takes most hikers between 10 to 12 hours to hike up Half Dome and return.

All that said, if you're looking for a challenge, this is a stupendous hike that offers stunning views of Vernal and Nevada Falls and Liberty Cap. From the shoulder and the summit of Half Dome, you’ll also have panoramic views across the Yosemite Valley and the High Sierra Mountains.

You’ll want to start this hike before sunrise and, although the trail is marked, carry a good topographic map and compass. Unless you are a rock climber with equipment, you’ll also have to use a two-cable system to climb the last 400ft to the summit.

If the cables are too much (or you can’t get a permit) you can still climb as far as Sub Dome, which is where the cable section starts. The views from here are still really impressive, and the hike is intense.

Planning tip: You can only summit Half Dome between Memorial Day and Indigenous Peoples Day, and you'll need a permit to hike past the Sub Dome area. Apply online in March for one of the 225 hiking permits offered each day of the season. The NPS issues them via a lottery system, and competition is stiff.

2. Experience the magic of El Capitan

Yosemite’s other legendary slab of rock is El Capitan , which garnered a lot of attention after Alex Hannold’s free solo climb in June 2017. The subsequent Academy Award–winning Free Solo documentary told the story of Hannold becoming the first person to summit El Capitan using only his hands, no ropes.

Today, this nearly 3600ft sheer cliff remains a hotspot for climbers. On Yosemite Valley’s north side, it can be seen from numerous points of interest around the park, like the Tunnel View lookout and El Capitan Meadow. The latter is the best spot to photograph this massive rock (it is 1000ft taller than Half Dome’s face). You’ll find the meadow on the North Drive through the Yosemite Valley.

Planning tip:  Bring a pair of binoculars so you can spot the climbers from a distance.

3. See the Yosemite Valley from Tunnel View Lookout

The Yosemite Valley is where many of the park’s top attractions are located, including Tunnel View lookout. The parking lot is located right off Hwy 41, just east of Wawona Tunnel as you enter the Yosemite Valley, and it offers spectacular views of the Yosemite Valley. You’ll be able to see El Capitan to your left, Bridalveil Falls to your right and Half Dome in the distance. In the foreground is a sea of green trees and more granite cliffs.

Try to visit just before or at sunset, when the granite monoliths glow golden from the setting sun; the green of the trees is especially vibrant. Crowds can be serious, however, in summer. If you are visiting in winter, you might have the place nearly to yourself, and the granite walls look especially magical when blanketed in snow. Come in May to see Bridalveil Falls at peak flow.

4. Drive Tioga Road

Running east-west across Yosemite, Tioga Rd is only open in the summer. Opening and closing dates vary based on when the road can be cleared in spring and when it first begins to snow in fall. Beginning at Tioga Pass, at the park’s east entrance, with an elevation just shy of 9945ft, Hwy 120 is a wonderfully scenic 46-mile drive , and traversing it to Crane Flat in the west is well worth the park fee alone.

The drive takes you past Tuolumne Meadows, wide-open subalpine terrain bisected by the curvaceous Tuolumne River. You’ll also pass wildflower-strewn fields, deep-green forests, granite domes and hiking trails that lead to clear-blue mountain lakes, into which craggy granite peaks are reflected in the right light.

5. Photograph Yosemite Falls in spring

One of Yosemite’s most memorable sites is Yosemite Falls , and what makes it so alluring is that it only exists for part of the year. Spring is the best time to see the falls – the water is at its mightiest and most photogenic between April and June, thanks to melting snow. By August, however, the waterfall is usually down to a trickle or completely dry. Late fall storms can bring more water to Yosemite Falls, and in winter you may see an ice cone at the base of the upper falls.

One of the tallest waterfalls in the world, Yosemite Falls is made up of three waterfalls. Upper Yosemite Fall drops 1430ft down a granite wall, then the middle cascades drop 675ft before Lower Yosemite Fall drops off another ledge for 350ft.

Planning tip: There are lots of spots to photograph Yosemite Falls in spring. If you want to walk, you can take a 1-mile loop trail to the base of Lower Yosemite Falls. This is also the start of the Yosemite Falls hike, which is a strenuous day hike of close to 8 miles. But walking to the base of the falls is easy and still gives a great perspective.

Hiker standing on an overhanging rock and taking in the view at Glacier Point overlook during the evening.

6. Stroll to Glacier Point lookout

Open only from late May through October, Glacier Point Rd is one of the park’s most famous drives. It takes you to  Glacier Point , one of the most impressive views in the entire park, looking out over Yosemite Valley, Half Dome, Yosemite Falls and the park’s high country.

The lookout itself, which is 3214ft above Curry Village, is accessed from the Glacier Point parking lot via a short, wheelchair-accessible paved trail. During the months when the road is open, you can also visit the lookout on the Glacier Point bus tour.

Detour: After checking out the viewpoint, take the Four Mile Trail down to Yosemite Valley, some 3200ft below. A little less than 5 miles long (the name is confusing), the trail is steep with some good views and drops you out near Sentinel Rock. You can also hike it up to Glacier Point. Either way, check the bus schedule to see if you can catch a ride back the other direction.

7. Hike to Columbia Rock and beyond

Yosemite National Park is a hiker’s paradise , with more than 750 miles of trails to explore. One of the top moderate hikes in the park is up to Columbia Rock, from which you have 180-degree views of Yosemite Valley, including Half Dome to the east and Cathedral Spires to the west.

The 3-mile roundtrip hike begins at the Lower Yosemite Falls trailhead and gains about 1000ft in elevation as it continues onto the Upper Yosemite Falls trail, making it a relatively demanding hike complete with switchbacks. The trip takes between two and three hours, depending on how fast you walk.

Columbia Rock is also part of the trail system that initially takes you to the top of Yosemite Falls, located another two-thirds of the way on the Upper Yosemite Falls trail. You won’t be able to see the falls from the lookout, but continue for another half-mile and you’ll get great views of them. You can also continue to the top, which is a 7.6-mile round trip.

8. Bike to Mirror Lake

If you are looking for an easy, family-friendly bike ride that also offers awesome, just-in-front-of-you views of Half Dome, consider the Mirror Lake trail. The paved service road runs along the north side of the river and is part of Yosemite National Park’s 12 miles of paved bike paths.

Bike rentals are available at Curry Village. From here it is an easy .8-mile ride via Happy Isle Loop Rd to the Mirror Lake Trailhead. The path can also be walked, so keep an eye out for pedestrians. Note that to reach the upper section of the lake itself, which is known for its Half Dome reflections, you’ll need to walk the final, short portion of the trail.

Getting To Yosemite National Park

Yosemite National Park is located in California. It’s very common for travelers flying into the state to rent a car from San Francisco or Sacramento and drive to the park as part of a road trip. You can also fly into the Fresno/Yosemite International Airport, which is about an hour and 20 minutes to Yosemite’s South Entrance.

Having your own vehicle is recommended, as it gives you flexibility when it comes to creating your itinerary for Yosemite and allows you to explore on your own time.

If you’d prefer to take public transportation, you can opt for:

Bus: Yosemite Area Regional Transportation System (YARTS) bus.

Train: Amtrak doesn’t go directly to Yosemite National Park, but you can connect your train journey with the bus.

Getting Around Yosemite National Park

Renting a car for yosemite national park.

Yosemite National Park is huge, and you’ll definitely want a car to explore the many trails and sites.

If you need to rent a car, I highly recommend using  Discover Cars  to quickly compare your rental options.

Their comparison tool does the homework for you, so there’s no need to have 10+ tabs up trying to figure out which company is the most affordable. Actually, you can save up to 70% using their tool!

Yosemite National Park Shuttle & Buses

Another way to get around the park is via the free Yosemite Valley Shuttle System as well as the Yosemite Area Regional Transportation System (YARTS) bus system (for a fee). You can click here for more information from the National Park Service on the shuttle lines and when each is operating.

Renting a car allows you to explore the many unique things to do in Yosemite National Park

Best Time To Visit Yosemite National Park

When it comes to visiting Yosemite National Park, each season brings a completely different experience.

Winter. While Yosemite is absolutely beautiful in the winter, it’s important to note that some sections of the park like Tioga Road are closed and, depending on the month, many of the waterfalls won’t be flowing and trails may be icy.

Spring. In my opinion, this is the best time to visit! This is when the park feels most alive with waterfalls at their most powerful and lovely flowers in bloom.

Summer. Summer is also a popular time to visit, though note that toward the end of summer many of the waterfalls dry up.

Fall. Yosemite is lovely in fall; however, during this time the weather is unpredictable, areas of the park may be closed (like Tioga Road), and waterfalls may be dried up or low.

In short, try to visit in spring or early summer if possible.

Yosemite National Park Map

Before visiting, it’s recommended to print out a map of Yosemite National Park. This is one of my top solo hiking tips , though it’s also important if you’re in a group.

You can  click here  to do that.

Note: You’ll get a paper Yosemite sights map when entering the park (shown below) and there are maps posted everywhere for you to easily take a photo of with your phone.

An Important Consideration When Planning Your Itinerary For Yosemite

One of the biggest mistakes visitors to Yosemite National Park make is not realizing how enormous it is. The park encompasses 1,169 square miles — meaning that driving from one section of the park to another can take hours!

That is why it is vital to plan out your itinerary for Yosemite ahead of time.

Most first-time visitors to the park spend the majority of their time exploring the many things to do in Yosemite Valley and Mariposa Grove near the South Entrance , which is what we’ll mainly be focusing on below, particularly in the 1 day in Yosemite and 2 days in Yosemite suggestions.

That being said, if you have the time to drive to other sections of the park — like Tuolumne Meadows , one of the Sierra Nevada region’s largest high elevation meadows (about 2 hours from the South Entrance), and Tioga Pass , a stunning mountain pass in California’s Sierra Nevadas (about 2.5 hours from the South Entrance) — it can be worth it.

We’ll get more into this below as we go over the many unique things to do in Yosemite.

Now, because things are so spread out you’ll really want to choose your accommodation wisely. This brings us to our next section:

Best Places To Stay At Yosemite

In my opinion, the closer you stay to Yosemite National Park, the better.

Actually, my husband Andy and I made the mistake of booking an Airbnb that was about 45 minutes away from the South Entrance of Yosemite. While we liked the rental itself, it added a lot to the drive times.

If possible, you might consider even staying in the park at campsites or hotels like:

  • The Ahwahnee Hotel . This is Yosemite’s only luxury hotel.
  • Yosemite Valley Lodge . This traditional lodge is located near the bottom of Yosemite Falls.
  • Curry Village . Here you’ll find a mix of cabins and canvas tents.
  • Wawona Hotel . This historic Victorian lodge is near Mariposa Grove and California’s famous sequoia trees.
  • Housekeeping Camp . Here you can enjoy open air camping on the Merced River.
  • White Wolf Lodge . Located about 30 miles from Yosemite Valley, it’s a good place to be centrally located to the various areas of the park. If you’d also like to visit Tuolumne Meadows and/or Tioga Pass, it’s a great option. They offer cabins and canvas tents.

The above are my recommendations for the itineraries below, though note there are other accommodation options in the park.

Moreover, there are places to stay right outside the park entrance, like Tenaya at Yosemite , which has a pool and a spa, too.

Click here for a full list of hotels near Yosemite!

Prefer self-contained stays?

Click here to view unique local rentals !

You can also peruse the map below. It’s set to El Portal, one of the closest towns to Yosemite National Park, but you can easily change the destination based on where you’d like to stay.

Logistics For Yosemite (Entrance Fees, Permits & More)

As you’re planning your Yosemite National Park itinerary it’s important to not just map out things to do, but to also understand the steps necessary to enter the park, including:

Yosemite National Park fee: $35/vehicle (valid for seven days)

Entrances: Yosemite National Park features five entrances:

  • Hetch Hetchy Entrance
  • Big Oak Flat Entrance
  • Arch Rock Entrance
  • South Entrance
  • Tioga Pass Entrance

Discount Passes: You can purchase a Yosemite Annual Pass for $70 or an America the Beautiful—National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Annual Pass for $80. The latter is great if you plan to visit multiple national parks within a year.

  • A wilderness permit is needed for backpacking and overnight hiking
  • A permit is required to hike Half Dome

Food/Drink: There are a number of places to buy food within Yosemite National Park, from quick grab-and-go spots to pizzerias and grills to nicer restaurants like the Ahwahnee Dining Room.

Gas: There are two gas stations within Yosemite National Park in Wawona and at Crane Flat.

Yosemite Closures: Check the the Yosemite National Park website for updates on any trail or facility closures. You can view current conditions here .

On that note, let’s map out your perfect itinerary for Yosemite !

Because you’re short on time, it’s important to maximize it and get some of the absolute best views and Yosemite sights in.

We’ll start the morning with some scenic spots and easy trails and then spend the afternoon hiking one of most beautiful trails in the park.

Wawona Tunnel + Tunnel View

Have your camera ready for this one, as you’ll drive through the 4,233-foot-long Wawona Tunnel — the longest highway tunnel in California and one of the top attractions in Yosemite National Park!

As you exit and darkness turns to light, you’ll be gifted with an incredible view of El Capitan, Half Dome, and Bridalveil Fall.

Pro tip: Recording yourself going through the tunnel and then emerging makes for a really neat video!

You can even pull over to the side at the Tunnel View Overlook to really take in the greatness of the park’s breaktaking granite monoliths.

Tunnel View should be on every itinerary for Yosemite National Park

Do A Few Of The Best Easy Hikes In Yosemite

While the afternoon trail is moderate with some uphill climbs, there are a number of easy and scenic trails in the Yosemite Valley you can do beforehand that won’t wear you out, like:

Bridalveil Fall. This 0.5-mile paved out-and-back trail takes about 20 minutes to hike and brings you to the base of Bridalveil Waterfall.

Bonus: It’s one of the top easy hikes in Yosemite and is only about a 4-minute drive from Tunnel View. You’ll likely get wet from the mist in spring and early summer. Note that this trail can be icy in winter.

Lower Yosemite Fall. This 1.1-mile trail takes about 30 minutes and offers incredible views of the Upper and Lower Yosemite Falls. The best time to hike this is in spring and early summer when the falls are at their strongest. In fact, these falls often dry up in late summer and early fall.

Cook’s Meadow Loop. Located near to the Lower Yosemite Fall trail, this is a 1-mile loop trail that takes about 30 minutes to hike. In that time, you’ll be rewarded with views of Half Dome, Glacier Point, and the Royal Arches.

Mirrow Lake/Meadow. This hike is the farthest from Tunnel View, though it still only takes about 18 minutes to reach the trailhead by car. You have a few different options for hiking this trail, including trekking round-trip to the lake, which takes about an hour, or doing 5-mile loop around the lake in about 2 hours.

This hike is highly recommended as it’s a great place to spot wildlife as well as see the mountains reflected on the water in winter and spring when it’s not dried up (which it can be in summer). It’s truly one of the best easy day hikes in Yosemite!

Mirror Lake should be on every itinerary for Yosemite National Park

Stop At Sentinel Beach

Did you know you can spend time at the beach in Yosemite National Park?

Sentinel Beach is just a 10-minute drive from Tunnel View. Here you’ll find a sandy beach on the Merced River where there are loads of activities to enjoy — like swimming, rafting, and heading to the Swinging Bridge next door for views of the Three Brothers, El Capitan, Columbia Rock , and more!

Peruse The Ansel Adams Gallery

Looking for a unique souvenir to take home from your Yosemite trip or want to immerse yourself in a photography experience?

The Ansel Adams Gallery is named after photographer and conservationist Ansel Adams and is where you can buy original photographs, books, and other keepsakes. The gallery also puts on rotating exhibits, workshops, and photo walks.

The gallery is located right near the Valley Visitor Center if you need to get questions answered or want to more information about the park.

Sentinel Dome should be on every itinerary for Yosemite National Park

Hike Sentinel Dome To Glacier Point

This moderate hike will undoubtedly become one of the major highlights of your Yosemite itinerary. You can choose to just hike to Sentinel Dome , which is about 1.1 miles one-way, or you can continue on to Glacier Point for another 1.4 miles — which I highly recommend!

The trailhead is at the Sentinel Dome Parking Area on Glacier Point Road, a bit outside of the Yosemite Valley.

For the first section, you’ll hike a woodland path to Sentinel Dome. There is a quick uphill climb to get to the top of the dome, where you are rewarded with true 360-degree views showcasing Half Dome, El Capitan, Yosemite Falls, North Dome, Basket Dome, and more!

Give yourself at least 30 minutes to walk around the top of the dome and photograph the views before heading down and continuing on to Glacier Point .

This trail is downhill — though remember that means it’s uphill on the way back. You’ll be immersed in woodland, with Half Dome popping out to say hello every so often.

And when you reach Glacier Point you’ll have a front row view of Half Dome’s beauty. Not only that, but you’ll take in a panoramic vista that also features Mount Florence, Vernal Falls, Liberty Cap, Nevada Falls, Mount Clark, and Mount Starr King.

The official Glacier Point and its adjoining parking lot will likely be swarmed with Yosemite visitors.

However, if you stop where the Glacier Point trail brings you out of the woods and the final view appears, you’ll see rocky ledges and outcroppings with nobody on them where you can enjoy the scenery in solitude.

Actually, instead of explaining this gorgeous hike, check out its beauty firsthand in my Sentinel Dome to Glacier Point hiking video:

See The Sunset On Sentinel Dome

Since you have to hike back anwyay, you might as well time it so that you can see the sunset from the top of Sentinel Dome.

If you thought the view was stunning before, get excited to see the granite mountains and impressive rock formations of Yosemite National Park washed in a palette of orange, yellow, pink, and purple.

Yosemite 2 Day Itinerary

Okay, now let’s chat about what to add on for a Yosemite 2 day itinerary .

I hope you got a good night’s rest, because today we’ll be focusing on one of Yosemite’s most challenging yet scenic hikes!

Hike Vernal And Nevada Falls via The Mist Trail

Yes, your calves will hate you for this one, but it will be so worth it for the amazing views that will be a highlight of your 2 day Yosemite itinerary.

I mean, not only do you see two stunning waterfalls and then climb to the top of them, but you also take in some of the most jaw-dropping views in all of Yosemite.

The hike can be broken up into four sections:

Trailhead to Vernal Falls Footbridge . This is a little less than a mile from the trailhead. It’s paved and is quite steep in some sections, though you’ll see some pretty mountain views and rock walls along the way. Moreover, from the footbridge you get a nice view of Vernal Falls.

Footbridge to Vernal Falls. Here the trail gets even more challenging as you hike up 650 stairs via “Nature’s Giant Staircase”. It’s worth it though for the beautiful views of Vernal Falls along the way, not to mention the vista from above the falls.

No itinerary for Yosemite National Park would be complete without the John Muir Trail

Vernal Falls to Nevada Falls. Expect more uphill climbs but even better views! A few visual highlights include Emerald Pool and stunning views of Liberty Cap, a prominent granite dome that towers over the north side of Nevada Falls.

Once you reach the falls — which have an elevation of 5,971 feet — you’ll get even more epic vistas! Cross the Merced River over a footbridge that straddles Nevada Falls for an incredible panorama out over Yosemite Valley.

Return via the John Muir Trail. While some hikers return down the way they came, I recommend doing this as a Nevada Fall Loop and taking the John Muir Trail back down to the Vernal Falls Bridge. While it’s longer at 4 miles (vs about 2.5 miles if you go back the way you came), it’s way easier on your knees.

Plus, you get what is, in my opinion, the best view of the entire hike with Nevada Falls, Liberty Cap, and the back of Half Dome to one side, and trees sloping down into Yosemite Valley and being swallowed up by the curving lines of Yosemite’s many granite peaks and rock formations on the other.

Trust me when I say no 2 day Yosemite itinerary would be complete without taking in this vista!

Finally, to help you truly see why this should be a part of your itinerary for Yosemite, here is a video I made of the hike. At the very end, you’ll see the amazing view from the John Muir Trail I just mentioned, too!

Now, if you’re looking for something less strenuous, you can hike to Vernal Fall Footbridge and stop there for a nice view of Vernal Falls.

That being said, if you can muster up the energy to at least go up the 650 steps to Vernal Falls itself you’ll have even better views.

Sunset At Tunnel View

While you saw Tunnel View when you came into Yosemite National Park yesterday, you can get a different perspective of this jaw-dropping view by stopping here at sunset.

Bring a mini tripod so you can set your phone up to take a timelapse. This can make for a really stunning video as the sky quickly changes from blue to yellow to orange to pink to red to purple.

Yosemite 3 Day Itinerary

If you have 3 days in Yosemite , I have a few different suggestions for you to work with.

Of course, you can continue exploring Yosemite Valley; however, if you’d like to change up the scenery and experience I highly recommend driving over to Tuolumne Meadows and/or Tioga Road. Tuolumne Meadows is actually on Tioga Road, and is about a 30-minute drive from the famous Tioga Pass.

You won’t regret adding these places to your itinerary for Yosemite National Park!

Option #1: Explore More Amazing Yosemite Valley Hikes & Bike Trails

There are still some great hikes to explore in the Yosemite Valley, listed below. Note that these are almost all strenuous aside for Mariposa Grove, so if you’d like something easy scroll back up to the Yosemite 1 Day Itinerary option and choose one or a few from that list.

Columbia Rock via the Upper Yosemite Falls Trail . This strenuous but short hike is 2 miles round-trip, but you’ll gain an elevation of 1,000 feet. From Columbia Rock, enjoy a panoramic view of the Yosemite Valley, Half Dome, Upper Yosemite Falls, Sentinel Rock, and Eagle Peak (which looks a bit similar to El Capitan) from 5,031 feet.

Upper Yosemite Fall. This also includes Columbia Rock, as you’ll simply continue hiking up, which leads to a 6-to-8-hour hike in total. The highlight of this 7.2-mile trail is summiting North America’s tallest waterfall at 2,425 feet above the Valley floor.

Half Dome. Possibly the most epic hike in Yosemite — though note it’s very strenuous at 14-to-16 miles round-trip with an elevation gain of 4,800 feet! You’ll actually do the Mist Trail or John Muir Trail (your choice!) to Nevada Falls and then continue on. From the top, enjoy incredible panoramic views of Yosemite Valley and the High Sierra.

Because the dome is super steep you’ll need cables to assist you, which are typically up from late May to early October. Note that a permit is required to hike Half Dome.

Mariposa Grove trails. While not in Yosemite Valley, Mariposa Grove is right near the South Entrance of the park so you’ll pass it on the way in. Here you’ll find numerous trails of varying difficulties that take you through California’s famous giant sequoia trees.

Yosemite Valley bike trails. There is a free Yosemite Bike Share program that allows you to explore the Yosemite Valley by bike. While I wouldn’t recommend doing this over a hike, if you’ve done a bunch of trails and want to change up your activity doing the bike rental can be a fun option.

Taking in the view from Columbia Rock via the Upper Yosemite Falls trail, which should be on every Yosemite itinerary

Option #2: Explore The Beauty Of The Tuolumne Meadows Area

Best Yosemite entrance: Tioga Pass Entrance

Tuolumne Meadows is a wide open subalpine meadow surrounded by Yosemite’s famous Sierra Nevada peaks and granite domes. Tuolumne is also a high-elevation meadow — sitting at 8,600 feet — and it features the beautiful winding Tuolumne River.

There are a number of things to do in and around Tuolumne Meadows, like:

Learn about flora and fauna at the Tuolumne Meadows Visitor Center. Located in a small cabin, you can peruse exhibits on wildlife, plants, and geology.

Take in the view from Olmsted Point. There is almost no effort required to take in vistas of Clouds Rest, Half Dome, and Tenaya Lake from Olmstead Point, which is just 0.25 easy miles from the trailhead.

Go swimming. Tuolumne River and Tenaya Lake are great spots for swimming while taking in beautiful views.

Go hiking. Tuolumne Meadows is home to some great day hikes, like:

Soda Springs / Parsons Lodge. This easy hike is 1.5 miles round-trip and features some really neat highlights — like seeing a naturally carbonated cold spring as well as the historic Soda Springs Cabin built around 1889.

Lembert Dome. This moderately strenuous 4-mile-round-trip hike offers incredible views of Tuolumne Meadows, the Cathedral Range, and surrounding peaks from the top of Lembert Dome.

Elizabeth Lake. This moderate 4.8-mile-round-trip hike showcases peaceful forests and a beautiful lake view.

Exploring Tuolumne Meadows Area in Yosemite National Park

Option #3: Explore The Beauty Of Tioga Road

If you’re wondering what to do in Yosemite beyond the popular tourist experiences, Tioga Road should definitely be on your radar — especially if you’re exploring Yosemite in 3 days.

First of all, it’s Yosemite’s highest road, stretching for 47 miles between Crane Flat and Tioga Pass and reaching over 10,000 feet above sea level at its highest point. Tuolumne Meadows is actully between Crane Flat and Tioga Pass, so you can technically visit the meadow, too.

Moreover, it’s remote and less-visited than Yosemite Valley, making it extra special — not to mention there are more hikes here than anywhere else in the park.

A few ways to spend your time here include:

Drive Tioga Road over Tioga Pass. The Tioga Pass is a stunning mountain pass in California’s Sierra Nevadas that should absolutely be included in your 3 day Yosemite itinerary. In fact, it’s the highest mountain pass in California and is the eastern entrance to Yosemite National Park. You’ll find many places to pull over and take photos.

Note that the Tioga Pass is not always open, particularly closer to winter when a lot of snow has fallen, so check the Yosemite website before visiting.

Tioga Pass is a top attraction in Yosemite National Park

See giant sequoia trees at Tuolumne Grove. While a smaller area than the sequoias at Mariposa Grove near Yosemite National Park’s South Entrance, this grove is more peaceful as there are less people and no cars allowed.

Hike the trails near Tioga Pass. There are a number of trails that begin at or near Tioga Pass, like:

May Lake and Mount Hoffmann . Hike an easy 2.5 miles round-trip to May Lake or a strenuous 6 miles round-trip to climb Mount Hoffman. While May Lake is beautiful, you really up the stunning factor when summiting Mount Hoffman thanks to stunning views over Half Dome and Clouds Rest.

Gaylor Lakes Trail. This moderate 2-mile trail begins at Tioga Pass and showcases gorgeous High Sierra views before taking you to Middle Gaylor Lake.

Want even more stunning Yosemite scenery? You can choose to continue on to Upper Gaylor Lake – Great Sierra Mine – Granite Lakes which is about 4.5 miles round-trip with about 1,500 feet in elevation gain.

Mount Dana. This strenuous high altitude hike takes you up Yosemite’s second-highest peak at 13,057 feet. While only about 6 miles round-trip, your calves will feel the burn and it’ll likely take you about 5-to-6 hours.

Still, the pain is worth it for the views of Dana Lake, Mono Lake, Tioga Lake, Saddlebag Lake, and Mount Lyell — the highest peak in Yosemite National Park at 13,114 feet.

North Dome. This moderate-strenuous hike begins at the Porcupine Creek Trailhead on Tioga Road and takes you for 10.4 miles round-trip up North Dome for amazing views of Half Dome and the Yosemite Valley.

Clouds Rest. If you want incredible 360-degree views, this strenuous 14.5-mile round-trip hike takes you to the 9,926-foot summit of Clouds Rest.

Here’s why you need to add this hike to your Yosemite National Park trip itinerary :

Along with seeing jaw-dropping vistas of Yosemite landmarks like Tenaya Lake, Half Dome, Mount Hoffman, Sentinel Dome, and North Dome, you can also see Hawaii and Nebraska on a clear day!

Clark Point should be on your itinerary for Yosemite National Park

Yosemite National Park Tips

Here are a few important pieces of advice. Honestly, most of these are true for all national parks.

-Know that you’re on Indigenous land. The Southern Sierra Miwuk Nation were the original inhabitants of the land that Yosemite National Park resides on, but were displaced and/or forced to relocate.

Along with educating yourself on the history and culture of this Indigenous tribe, consider making a donation to causes and charities that directly support them. Moreover, where possible hire Indigenous guides and purchase from Indigenous-owned businesses.

-Know which Yosemite National Park entrance is best. When booking your Yosemite National Park accommodation, do your research to make sure you’re staying near your desired entrance gate. The park is massive and it can take you hours to drive to a particular trailhead if you’re not staying in the right location.

-Keep wildlife wild. Do not feed, pet, or get too close to wildlife. If they become too used to humans they may become aggressive, and sadly may eventually need to be put down.

-Drive slowly. Make sure you’re going at or below the speed limit to avoid hitting animals. According to Yosemite National Park’s website, over 400 bears have been hit by cars since 1995. Don’t become a part of that statistic.

– Know the best time to visit Yosemite National Park. If possible, visit between May and September — though note that in summer the waterfalls may be dried up, so you might want to avoid July and August.

– Understand what to wear when you go hiking . Items like moisture-wicking clothing, sunglasses, and a hat can help keep you safe and comfortable.

-Stay on marked hiking trails. Going off-trail can cause trail erosion.

The Sentinel Dome-Glacier Point Trail should be on your itinerary for Yosemite National Park due to the epic views

Is yosemite valley worth visiting, group travel experience.

Such a great time with friends. We went after we graduated highschool. Best experience ever. I felt safe for the most part. It was my first time being that far from home at 18 so it was still a bit scary but Yosemite was safe. We had some nice neighbors who helped us out with pots and pans we needed and some guy helped my friends back issue. He was a marine with 2 kids with him and politely asked if she needed help cracking her back. He was very respectful with knowing we may be a little off put by a stranger but didn’t want to leave us in need. She ended up taking him up on his offer and it made our whole trip better with the kindness of a stranger

Yosemite national park travel faqs, do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

Where is Yosemite National Park?

Yosemite is located in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of central California, USA.

How do I get to Yosemite National Park?

Driving to Yosemite from San Francisco takes about four hours, and three hours from Sacramento.

Yosemite Area Regional Transportation System   (YARTS) provides a public bus service with various pickup and drop off points.

You can also catch a train from San Diego, Los Angeles, Fresno, San Francisco, San Jose, and Sacramento to Merced/Riverbank which connects with the YARTS bus service directly to Yosemite Valley.

The closest airport to Yosemite is the Fresno-Yosemite International Airport (FAT). Other airports within driving distance of the park are San Francisco International Airport (SFO), San Jose International Airport (SJC) and Oakland International Airport (OAK).

Getting around in Yosemite National Park

As Yosemite is so big, the best way to get around the park and access the main trails is by car.

There is a free daily shuttle bus every 10-20 mins with 19 stops throughout the Yosemite Valley, but having a car gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace.

What is the best time to visit Yosemite National Park?

Yosemite has a huge number of visitors during the summer months with the peak season from June and August.

The best time to visit is late spring, later summer and early fall when the park isn’t too crowded.

Winter is also a great time to visit with fewer visitors, great hiking opportunities and stunning views of the snow-capped mountains.

What's the weather like in Yosemite National Park?

The weather in Yosemite is seasonal but it can vary greatly from year to year.

Spring is generally quite cool with sunny skies and the occasional downpour of rain; summer is consistently sunny with warm to hot temperatures; fall is still warm with cool nights; and winter is cold with frost, ice, and snow.

What to wear during a Yosemite tour

If you go during the summer, bring t-shirts, shorts/skirts, hiking socks and boots, hiking trousers, a waterproof/windproof jacket, a sunhat, sunglasses, a daypack, a water bottle, sunscreen and insect repellent.

For winter trips, bring light layers, warm clothes, a fleece, thermal underwear/leggings, a waterproof winter coat, waterproof hiking boots/shoes, gloves, a hat, a daypack, sunglasses, sunscreen and a water bottle.

What to pack for Yosemite National Park?

There are several items that pretty much every visitor to Yosemite National Park should have. These include sturdy walking shoes, a raincoat, an extra warm layer, sunglasses, a sun hat and a reusable water bottle.

Depending on the time of year and what you're planning to do in Yosemite, you may need additional gear. If you go during the summer make sure to bring t-shirts, shorts/skirts, hiking socks and boots, hiking trousers, a waterproof/windproof jacket, sunhat, sunglasses, daypack, a water bottle, sunscreen and insect repellent.

For winter trips bring light layers, warm clothes, a fleece, thermal underwear/leggings, a waterproof winter coat, waterproof hiking boots/shoes, gloves, a hat, a daypack, sunglasses, sunscreen and a water bottle.

What is mobile/cell phone service and internet access like in Yosemite National Park?

Cell phones work near major tourist hubs such as Yosemite Valley, but the service can be weak and unreliable.

There is limited or no cell phone service in more remote areas of the park such as hiking trails and high-altitude viewpoints.

What animals live in Yosemite National Park?

You can expect to see many different animal species in Yosemite including:

  • American Black Bears
  • Sierra Nevada Bighorn Sheep
  • Sierra Fence Lizards
  • Garter Snakes
  • Northern Pygmy Owls and more.

Keep an eye out for animal tracks when you’re out hiking.

does anyone know the best way to get to the start of the mist trail with the current road closure?

' class=

When you're done with any length of hike (to the footbridge, to the top of Vernal Fall, etc), you can walk back to the car or walk some of the Valley Loop Trail over Tenaya Creek, then head up alongside the creek to Mirror lake/Meadow. Circle back to the car at Curry Village.

https://www.yosemite.ca.us/maps/curry_village_area_map.png

{Note that technically it's the John Muir Trail from Happy Isles to the footbridge, but for several years folks have said it's the Mist Trail. The old map says JMT. They're the same trail for the first mile or so, then the Mist Trail stays alongside the Merced River and the JMT heads up to the right on a gentler ascent.}

Here is the Google Map https://maps.app.goo.gl/PHAzNsmGyTcGAPH78

Some folks might prefer to walk on the closed road instead of the trail from Curry Village to Happy Isles.

Renan Ozturk On Climbing, World Culture And Essential Equipment

It’s a sunny afternoon in Boulder, Colorado when the work week begins. While most of us are settling into our daily routines,  Renan Ozturk  is returning from a six-country journey. His mission? To film a new documentary exploring the effects of travel on the mind. As a painter, filmmaker, storyteller and North Face athlete, Ozturk occupies a unique intersection in life that allows him to share stories about people and landscapes globally, integrating his passion for world culture and art.

As a painter, filmmaker, storyteller and athlete, Renan Ozturk travels the world to explore its ... [+] landscapes, peoples and cultures.

Ozturk isn’t just a solo adventurer with a penchant for storytelling. He also runs  Expedition Studios alongside co-founders Taylor Rees and Eric Crosland. Odds are you’ve seen his work, even if you don’t know it to be his. Projects include Meru with Jimmy Chin and Conrad Anker, a major Sundance hit, and his passion project film Sherpa , which screened at several international film festivals. He’s also worked with such brands as Apple, Honda and Intel.

In 2013, at the age of 32, Ozturk was named National Geographic Adventurer of the Year for his innovative storytelling and first ascents. But before he was filming David Beckham for Maserati and Jason Momoa for Meili Vodka, Ozturk was climbing, carrying large cotton canvases on his back for watercolor paintings.

Ozturk breaks out the canvas to paint in the backcountry—something he's been doing for decades.

Keep Your Devices Going With The Best Portable Chargers

The best kitchen appliance brands that offer unparalleled performance, how it started.

While attending Colorado College, Renan stumbled upon climbing and connected with a group of climbers whose families had ties to other renowned adventurers like Yvon Chouinard—you may know him as the founder of Patagonia . Before long, Ozturk realized climbing was more than just a hobby.

“I would travel to National Parks and not only discover that climbing was much more than a sport, but a lifestyle and a community and a system of ethics,” he explains. “I discovered that these landscapes really fascinated me. When I graduated, I had some friends basically drop me off with a duffel bag, and I lived for the next 10 years climbing and developing my landscape art.”

At first, Ozturk painted the very landscapes he explored as he hitchhiked around with a ragtag group of climbers. Their journey took them from Yosemite to Squamish and the high mountains of Canada during the summer heat, then to Joshua Tree in the winter. Throughout this decade of climbing, he secured sponsorships from The North Face before embarking on larger expeditions. During these adventures, Renan immersed himself in painting murals, honing his visual style and cultivating a deep appreciation for diverse places and cultures.

Ozturk's adventures take him all over the world, often to places that offer incredible views.

Filming On Top Of The World

“When you travel on these expeditions, you quickly realize that the people living below the mountains, the Sherpas in Nepal, the Balti porters in Pakistan and the Karakor in Himalaya, they're just as interesting as the climbing itself,” he reflects. “But there was a big turning point in camera technology around this time. This was probably in 2008 or 2010, where you could finally bring cameras light enough on these big Himalayan mountain adventures and bring back stories for the first time in a way that was cinematic and could tell a story.”

This led to climbing and filming Meru  with Jimmy Chin and Conrad Anker. The 2015 documentary recounts the first ascent of the Shark’s Fin, a route on Meru Peak in the Indian Himalayan range.

His first National Geographic assignment was to document honey hunters in Nepal. The documentary, called The Last Honey Hunter , was filmed in the Hongu river valley of Nepal and shares the story of harvesting wild and toxic honey.

One of his favorite documentaries he has worked on is called Sherpa , which highlights the Sherpa experience on Mount Everest.

“To most people, when you say Sherpa, they think of Sherpas as just porters, but these porters are actually a whole ethnicity. There are a lot of high-altitude workers in Nepal that aren't Sherpas as well,” Ozturk says. “During this project, we were in base camp trying to show how these Sherpa people and other high altitude porters are taking the brunt of the work and getting none of the credit for climbing Mount Everest and how it's really a complex thing that's happening at the roof of the world.”

During Renan's time at Everest Base Camp, tragedy struck when an avalanche claimed the lives of 16 people. Renan and his team documented the aftermath, including the recovery of the victims' bodies. The incident sparked protests regarding the treatment of Sherpas in the aftermath of such disasters, ultimately leading to positive changes within the community. Renan, who has harbored a deep affection for Nepal since his days studying abroad there, where he immersed himself in learning the language and culture, reflects on the impact of these events.

Ozturk’s Go-To Gear

Beyond a canvas and assorted paints, Ozturk packs a few key pieces of equipment whenever opportunity knocks and sends him to a remote destination. We got the low-down on his favorite gear, and why he brings each of these pieces along.

Beyond equipment, Renan offers advice for aspiring filmmakers: Attending film festivals provides exposure to inspiring new films and facilitates connections with industry professionals, serving as an invaluable entry point into the world of documentary filmmaking. He emphasizes the importance of focusing on deeply personal stories, as these are the narratives that resonate most powerfully with audiences, a principle he holds dear in his own storytelling.

A Compact, Powerful Mirrorless Camera

Sony alpha 7cr.

Ozturk brings some of his favorite gear on every expedition. This includes a Sony a7CR mirrorless camera, which he values for its lightweight design and full-frame capabilities that offer an unparalleled balance between weight and image quality. With a full-frame 61-megapixel Exmor R image sensor, 4x optical zoom and five-axes optical image stabilization, it captures every shot in stunning detail.

A Versatile Prime Lens For All Manner Of Environments

Sony fe 35mm f1.8 prime lens.

Ozturk’s camera setup includes pairing the Sony a7CR with a lightweight Sony FE 35mm F1.8 lens to create the ultimate all-purpose adventure camera setup. This prime lens’s nine-blade circular aperture creates a beautiful bokeh and its auto-focus system locks onto subjects quickly.

A Shell Cover To Protect Electronics From The Elements

Peak design camera shell.

To safeguard his equipment from the elements, Ozturk relies on a quick-release Peak Designs camera strap and camera wrap for added protection. The shell’s stretchy weatherproof fabric is seam-taped to prevent dust and moisture from getting in, and it works with the strap simultaneously to deliver an all-in-one carry and protection system.

A Versatile, Packable Insulated Jacket

The north face ventrix jacket.

For apparel, Ozturk always packs a Ventrix Jacket from The North Face. It’s a lightweight synthetic puffy jacket that offers insulation even when wet and doubles as a convenient pillow when needed. Accompanying him on every journey is a North Face Base Camp Duffel , renowned for its durability and ability to withstand the rigors of travel; some of Ozturk’s duffels have endured for over two decades.

A Bottle Of Whiskey Cut With Rocky Mountain Water

Tincup whiskey adventure pack.

To mark the start of any expedition, Ozturk brings along a bottle of Tincup’s classic mountain whiskey. It’s cut with Rocky Mountain water and packed in a metal, flat-sided bottle to ensure it doesn’t roll away.
