We will make our first stop at a lookout over selvallavatn and its surrounding landscapes of mountains, lakes and lava fields. it is here that there is even a hidden waterfall, which just tops off this incredible introduction to the beauty of snæfellsnes.  we’ll then continue our drive along some incredible landscapes, past moss covered lava fields and winding fjord roads on the way to one of iceland’s most famed locations., the iconic kirkjufell,  or church mountain, rises nearly 500 m up right above the seaside town of grundafjörður . this arrow shaped mountain was famously depicted in more recent episodes of the hit tv show game of thrones. the views from the picturesque waterfall of kirkjufellsfoss are incredible, this viewpoint to this famed mountain is surely one of iceland’s most iconic photos., from here we continue on to the seaside town of ólafsvík where we have lunch at one of our favorite local restaurants, which takes advantage of the local produce and seafood, all within the coziest of settings. you can choose from their delicious lunch menu, with lunch included in the price of the tour..

Snæfellsjökull volcano, Djúpalónssadur Beach & Western Coast

After lunch, we continue our drive further around the coast, coming down the western edge of the peninsula, we can start to admire the enormous and powerful snæfellsjökull volcano, which will dominate the skyline for the rest of our drive. on clear days, this famous glacier – capped volcano is visible from reykjavík. snæfellsjökull inspired jules verne when writing his book, journey to the centre of the earth, and it’s not hard to see why., we will drive through the moss covered lava fields that sprawl their way right down to the black sand shores of djúpalónssandur beach . this is one unique beach visit, with the mossy lava fields, rocky black shores, green freshwater pools and scattering of old shipwrecks across the beach really adding to the uniqueness of this coastline..

Arnarstapi Cliffs & Búðakirkja Black Church

The next stop is the gorgeous fishing village of arnarstapi . here the rock formations, coves and sea cliffs are to be explored and admired, with the crashing waves constantly eroding various shapes into the exposed cliffs. it is only a short drive on to one of rural iceland’s most iconic churches. the black church of búðakirkja would have to be the most photogenic church in iceland, with its stunning backdrop of lava fields and mountains making this a great last stop before heading back to reykjavík in time for a late dinner..

Kirkjufell and Kirkjufellfoss Waterfall

Kirkjufell is a narrow mountain and has become the landmark of the Peninsula. It is known after being presented as the “Arrowhead Mountain” on Game of Thrones. This mountain gets its shape from the erosion caused by the melting ice of the glaciers for the last 12,000 years. Because of this unique look, it is one of the most photographed sights in Iceland. Across the mountain is Kirkjufellfoss that completes the perfect shot of the mountains. The site has several vantage points and the guide will help you explore them.

Budakirkja, the Black Church of Budir

On the south coast of the peninsula, there is a village with one hotel and a tiny black church called Budakirkja that stays isolated among a field of lava rocks. The church was built on the spot in 1703 and was reconstructed in 1987. It has a historic graveyard, a bell, and chalice from the time it was erected. It is listed and owned by the National Museum of Iceland, but it is taken care of by the Budir parish.

Arnastapi Fishing Village, Hellnar and Arch

Arnastapi is a small fishing village with picturesque coastal cliffs that were formed from glowing magma hitting the wild waves of the Atlantic Ocean. It is one of the most beautiful harbors in the country. You can get to see the beautiful stone arcs that were formed by erosion. Enjoy the walk along the coastline as your guide tells you about Bardur, half-man half-troll, and his notorious activities in the area.

Ytri Tunga Seal Colony

Ytri Tunga is a sandy beach that has a secret hidden away, down by the sea, behind the farmhouses – a Seal Colony. You can spot seals spending their time on the rocks of the beautiful beach. They are friendly and curious animals and will climb up the rocks for you to spot them on a distance.

Londrangar and Basalt Cliffs

The Londrangar are a pair of rock pinnacles in Iceland and are remnants from a bigger crater that has eroded. They are a set of 75-meter high basalt pinnacles set the tone for what is to come. They are home of sea birds, northern fulmars and puffins, and others.

Djupalonssandur, Beach of Black Volcanic Sand

The beach of black volcanic sand and stones where Icelandic fishermen rowed out to the fertile fishing grounds of the Atlantic Ocean. You will get an opportunity to lift stones that fishermen of yore used to test out their strength and prove themselves worthy. In 1948, a British fishing trawler stranded on the sand reefs of Djupalonssandur . Five men died while 14 were rescued by local rescue squads. The remains of the ship are still there, strewn across the beach.

Saxholl Volcanic Crater

This volcanic crater was formed over 4,000 years ago. It is now accessible through an iron staircase, giving you the option of hiking it. This hike is not too challenging and gives you a 360 o view of the lava fields with Snaefellsness glacier overviewing it.

For tours that state that they pick up from Reykjavík, we ask all our customers to send their pick up location at least 24 hours prior to the departure of their tour. We cannot be responsible if you do not provide your pick up location, we won’t be responsible if you miss your tour.

Pick up starts at the scheduled departure time for the tour and can take up to 30 minutes. We ask our passenger to be ready in their listed location so they can be easily found.

Yes, we pick up at the cruise harbor for this tour. When booking the tour, choose Harbor – Skarfabakki as your pick up location and we will pick you up at the cruise port.

Due to regulations of Reykjavik City, tour companies are allowed to stop at certain designated bus stop locations in the city centre to pick up passengers. It is stated on your voucher whether we will pick you up directly from your accommodation or from the bus stop.

Snaefellsnes translates as “Snow Mountain Peninsula” and as we head west from Reykjavik past the beautiful Mount Esja and then by a tunnel under the waters of Hvalfjordur, you’ll soon see why!

Snaefellsnes Day Tour will start with a pickup from your accommodation in Reykjavik and a pit stop for snacks and refreshments in Borgarnes, once we’ve crossed the gorgeous bridge over Borgarfjordur.

As we leave Borgarnes behind, the highest volcano in the area, Snaefellsjokull, starts to come into view with its magnificent crown of ice and snow. This is the place that inspired Jules Verne to write “Journey to the Center of the Earth” with the entrance to the planet’s core found in this wild location, a place of enchantment and wonder.

When you complete your booking, you’ll be asked to choose a pick up and drop off location. Where possible, we will collect you directly from your hotel .

Some parts of the city have traffic restrictions, so you’ll need to go to a designated bus stop for collection instead if your hotel is in that area.

There’s a 30-minute window for collection while we pick up other passengers from their locations.

At the end of your tour, you’ll be dropped off at the same place unless you choose to get off at another stop instead – that’s your choice! Drop off can also take up to 30 minutes.

Iceland’s weather is famously unpredictable, so you’ll need to prepare appropriately, whatever the time of year for your tour.

That means choosing the right clothes (light layers), shoes (sturdy and waterproof) and coats (windproof & waterproof). And not wearing jeans, just in case it rains!

On our day tours from Reykjavik, we’ll make scheduled stops at various cafes and restaurants along the way, depending on weather conditions and the time of day.

Food and drinks are not included in your ticket price, so it’s up to you to choose what to eat when we stop for a break.

All dietary options are catered for in Iceland, but the selection of vegan and vegetarian meals may be limited in some locations.

Yes. We monitor the weather and road conditions on the tour route to maximize your chance to see Iceland’s attractions at their best.

That means we may change the order or timing of the stops to take advantage of the weather (avoiding rain or snow showers where possible) and “ golden hour” photo opportunities .

If we receive a weather alert from the Icelandic Meteorological Office or roads are closed by the local authorities, we must cancel tours for your safety.

Iceland’s weather is very changeable, meaning changes may occur quickly. If we have to cancel tours, we will send you an email notification immediately .

So please check your email inbox before heading out to the collection point, particularly if the weather looks bad in the city.

Sometimes the weather is worse outside the city, or vice versa!

We schedule our tours carefully to ensure you see Iceland’s natural marvels in daylight, even in the winter when there are more hours of darkness.

In the winter months, tours will begin and end in darkness, but rest assured, you will see all the places you want to see!

If you want to bring small children on our tours, we will provide booster seats to ensure their safety and comfort.

Important: bringing children younger than the minimum age stated for each trip is not permitted; please check carefully before submitting your booking.

After the final stop on the tour, we will return to the city. There is no specific time or drop off location – this can differ from the pick up spot. 

You’re free to ask the guide to drop you off in the city center, or back at your collection point, whichever is the most convenient for your evening plans.

You can expect to be dropped off within 30 minutes after the scheduled end of the tour.

The Snæfellsnes Peninsula in the West of Iceland comprises a world of diversity. During this day tour from Reykjavík, you will visit charming fishing towns, walk along with black and white sand beaches, see the mysterious Snæfellsjökull glacier and you will drive through impressive volcanic landscapes. It is a day full of natural highlights and you should not miss visiting this beautiful area during your holiday in Iceland.

You will get picked up from your accommodation in the morning and travel along the coastline of West Iceland in the direction of Snæfellsnes. Your first stop will be at a beach close to the charming farm Ytri Tunga. This light sandy beach is well-known for its seal colony. You need a little bit of luck but often seals can be spotted either sticking their heads up from the water or lying on the rocks just a few meters off the coast.

Next, you will visit the charming fishing town Arnarstapi. Beautiful rock formations decorate the coastline and you will have enough time to stroll along the cliffs. You will be impressed by the beautiful basalt columns, which reach inside a beautiful cave and you should also have a look at the huge sculpture of Bárður Snæfellsás. This sculpture represents the mythological figure  Bárður , who is half a troll and half a man and the protector of Snæfellsnes.

Later you will visit the gorgeous black beach Djúpalónssandur. This black iconic pebble stone beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in Iceland. There, you can also test yourself with stone lifting like the local fishermen did in the middle ages. At this time the beach was a busy fishing village and the four stones at the beach were used by fishermen to test their strength.

You will drive all around the peninsula and will reach the most photographed Mountain of Iceland in the afternoon. Kirkjufell Mountain  rises 463 meters above sea level and is the landmark of the small town of Grundarfjörður. It is one of the most  popular photography spots in Iceland (for a reason), so be sure to get a picture for your own collection!

Join this perfect small group tour to the magical Snaefellsnes peninsula .

Countless lunar landscapes and volcanic vistas lie in store for you as we drive west out of Reykjavik and head towards the magnificent Snæfellsjökull glacier.

The glacier sits atop the active volcano of the same name, a volcano that took center stage in Jules Verne’s classic sci-fi novel Journey to the Centre of the Earth. You might even have spotted the glittering ice cap of Snæfellsjökull across the bay in Reykjavik, such as the volcano’s prominence on the landscape.

The first stop will be at Ytri-Tunga farm . Next to the farm, there is a beautiful beach where huge seal colonies can usually be found. Your expert local guide will lead you to where you can find these majestic creatures.

Our Magical Snaefellsnes tour will take us to Buðarkirkja , the black church in the hamlet of Búðir . It sits within the lava field of Búðahraun , and it has a natural harbor that made this place the most important commercial hub in the peninsula during the Danish trade monopoly of the 17th and 18th centuries.

Here we can admire one of the few black churches in all of Iceland.

The current building dated from 1848 when a woman called Steinunn Lárusdóttir got permission from the Danish King to build this church where the original turf chapel stood from 1703 until 1816.

The dramatic coastline of Arnarstapi is waiting for you next. Powerful waves constantly erode the cliffs and leave impressive rock formations behind, like the famous Gatklettur (Holerock). We will also meet Bárður Snæfellsás, the mythical guardian of the peninsula at Arnarstapi , and hear folktales about him.

A visit to the black sand beach of Djúpalónssandur is also a must. Here, we can see the remains of a shipwreck from 1948. We will find four large stones of different sizes at the beach entrance. These were once used to measure sailors’ strength in the days of the fishing stations, and their salary was determined accordingly.

Then, we will travel to admire Kirkjufell , probably the country’s most picturesque and photographed mountain. Surrounded by streams and small waterfalls, it was chosen to be one of the filming locations for Game of Thrones, in which it appeared as the “Arrowhead Mountain.”

Our last stop will be the Berserkjahraun lava fields. Created around 4.000 years ago, the lava fields are incredibly thick and decorated with beautiful rock formations. While exploring this beautiful area, your guide will take you to a hidden waterfall.

Snaefellsnes is an area of exceptional geological beauty – craters, lava fields, idyllic hidden coves, and bizarre rock formations all wait to be discovered and explored.

This area is also rich in local legends and folk stories. Some enthusiasts even believe aliens visit the Snaefellsnes glacier and continue visiting the site to wait for spaceships to appear. Healers and Gurus have also made this area their home as they believe the energy is unique.

Tour description

Are you ready for a 10 hour power-day where you will see glaciers, volcanoes, lava fields, waterfalls, black and golden beaches, caves and have lunch at an Icelandic horse farm!?

This was a day to perfection. Our tour guide Asdis was amazing! She is not only passionate about her country but very dedicated to her job. I have been on tours with other companies but this one was the best by far. Asdis really tried her best to maximize our experience. It's rare to find someone as dedicated as her, we were lucky to have her for the day! Highly recommended!

This was my husband's favorite tour. Arna our guide was amazing. She was personal and knew everything about the penisula! So many stops and you can't believe you were there that long! Truly, it was amazing food and the hospitality was great!

The guide was super nice and professional. We had a great weather, all the landscapes were magical. The atmosphere was great. Fantastic experience! I highly recommend the tour!

• What sort of vehicle is used on the tour? We use 19-seater Mercedes Sprinters - with big leather seats. It’s a great way to travel around Icelandic nature! You will not be disappointed with this luxury ride. There are no large 70 seater coaches.
• Do you have free WiFi in your vehicles? Yes, you can brag to your friends in real time on Instagram with the free WiFi included in all vehicles!
• What do I need to bring with me for a tour? We recommend you dress according to weather. A hat and gloves are always a good idea for all tours, along with comfortable shoes. Don't forget your camera!
• What should I wear for this tour? Iceland can get a bit chilly, especially during our winter season. So we recommend wearing warm outdoor clothing (warm jackets, hats, gloves etc). That way, you can fully immerse yourself in the experience while staying comfortably toasty! 😊
• What type of vehicle is used for this tour? The vehicle for this experience is a comfortable Mercedes-Benz Sprinters CDI 519 with 19 seats and free WI-FI.

Tour Itinerary

This tour takes you west from Reykjavik on a scenic route to Borgarfjörður and the village of Borgarnes where a short stop will be made for refreshments. Shortly after entering Snæfellsnes peninsula, by Ytri-Tunga Farm, you'll get a chance to spot local wildlife at the beach which is home to  a seal colony  and a variety of sea birds. Next up is a visit to the idyllic Arnarstapi village where you‘ll take a walk to view the extraordinary landscape along the precipitous shoreline and where a break will be made for lunch. After lunch, the tour continues to Djúpalónssandur, a tranquil, black-pebbled beach that offers beautiful views out to the sea and fascinating history that lies in the Snæfellsjökull National Park, close to where Jules Verne located his entrance for the “Journey to the Centre of the Earth”. Leaving Djúpalónssandur you‘ll travel past striking landscapes to the north coast of Snæfellsnes peninsula to Grundarfjordur fishing village. Surrounded by exceptionally beautiful mountains Grundarfjörður is home to one of the peninsula‘s most iconic and photographed landmarks, the symmetrical  mountain Kirkjufell that towers 1500 ft. up from the shoreline. Out of Grundarfjörður, the route lies across Berserkjahraun lava fields that according to Viking legends where two Swedish "Berserks" forged Iceland‘s first road and over to the south side of the peninsula through Vatnaleið pass.
