"Young Messiah Tour" Unites Christian Music Greats

JUST as Christmas receives its fullest meaning because of Easter, The Young Messiah Tour's celebration of Jesus' birth reached some of its highest moments during songs about his death and resurrection.

An estimated 12,000 spectators filled the Myriad Sunday as 10 of Christian music's premiere acts brought their individual style to favorite Christmas carols and an updated premiere version of Handel's "The Messiah. " Sharing the stage and spotlight were Carman, Sandi Patti, Larnelle Harris, Wayne Watson, Sheila Walsh, Dick and Melodie Tunney, Steven Curtis Chapman, The Bill Gaither Trio and Vocal Band, Michael English and conductor Ralph Carmichael.

Besides the triumphant "Hallelujah Chorus" featuring the stars, a 200-voice choir and 40-piece orchestra of local musicians, plus anyone who cared to join in from the audience, other convincing songs with the resurrection theme were Harris' "Amen" and Patti's "I Know That My Redeemer Liveth. " Harris, who was on an airplane en route to Oklahoma City when the performance began, showed up just before the intermission to bring the audience to its feet during "Amen," as he sang "they crucified him and he arose. " Despite the power of Harris' performance, the ovation was clearly for the one about whom he sang.

Patti, whose voice flows from lofty high notes to rich lows, demonstrated her incredible range and stamina as she sang about her risen Redeemer. She also was stunning in her presentation of a medley that ended with "O Holy Night. " Patti's voice soared above a chorus and orchestra, then rang pure in spine-tingling solo as the accompaniment dropped out.

Throughout the three-hour show, the performances were strong, and the artists sang with conviction. Among my favorites: - Watson performed a stunning "Sweet Little Jesus Boy," featuring his acoustic guitar and powerful voice against a backdrop of silence.

- Carman, a Tulsa native who had family members in the audience, stirred the crowd with "What Christmas Means to Me" (Celebrating Jesus), a lively '50s number in which Melodie Tunney, Patti and a member of the Gaither Vocal Band added hip backup vocals.

"The Young Messiah," arranged by Don Hart and Paul Mills, invites people who might be intimidated by Handel's classic to peer into the timeless story of the expectation, birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

In a similar way, The Young Messiah Tour, with its diverse mix of performers, likely introduced people who knew only a few of the stars to the talents and inspiration of the oth ers.

The Oklahoma City performance marked the end of a 17-day, 12-city tour, from which a dollar from every ticket sold was used by the International Bible Society to provide New Testaments for people in what was the Soviet Union. More than 400,000 Bibles will be supplied with the concert proceeds, Patti announced during the concert. BIOG: NAME:

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- Put

on a pedestal; she’ll be the first to knock it down.

This contemporary Christian artist wants listeners to know that she’s on their level, however flawed, fragile or forlorn that might be.

"We all need to be loved and encouraged and challenged by one another," says Patty, 55.

During a Saturday concert in Birmingham, she’ll attempt to share her spiritual convictions and spread a great deal of joy, with the aid of four other performers on the "Sandy Patti & Friends" tour.

This show, like countless others Patty has performed during her 34-year career, will combine music with religion and entertainment with inspiration.

No, the award-winning singer won’t focus on material from her latest record, 2011’s "Broadway Stories." Shows with this theme are likely to be on her agenda next year, Patty says, and they’ll probably be booked with symphony orchestras around the country.

In the absence of show tunes, she’ll present fan favorites from some of her 1980s records, asking tour mates

to join her when it’s appropriate.

"We were visiting a few years ago, talking about how people were going to see bands like Earth, Wind & Fire," Patty says. "And we thought maybe we should revisit the ‘80s a little bit together. There will be great variety in the evening, but hopefully someone will say, ‘Oh, I grew up on that one.’"

Even if audience members aren’t familiar with fervent hits such as "More Than Wonderful," "Sing to the Lord," "Make His Praise Glorious" and "We Will See Him As He Is," they still can revel in Patty’s magnificent voice.

Her octave-spanning instrument has animated about 35 albums, won five Grammys and earned Patty a spot in the Gospel Music Hall of Fame. She’s the recipient of nearly 30 Dove Awards, as well.

But Patty’s career path hasn’t always been smooth, nor has her image remained squeaky clean. She’s been through some rough spots, personally and professionally.

Faith has been a mainstay, though, helping Patty to pick up the pieces after infidelity shattered her marriage in the 1990s. Instead of dodging the fallout, she took responsibility for her actions in an autobiography, "Broken on the Back Row," and has been an open book ever since.

Patty offered a few thoughts on faith and fame during a recent phone interview.

When Christian singers become public figures, they’re often regarded as holier than thou, absolutely righteous or perhaps closer to God than ordinary people. This image can create a great distance between artists and listeners, Patty says. She found it difficult, if not impossible, to maintain. "I probably spent the first 20 years of my career trying to pretend I had it all perfectly together," Patty says. "I knew different in my heart, but I tried to portray that. My hope and intention for the last half of my career is to acknowledge that life is hard sometimes."

She’s a regular performer at annual

events around the country. At these conferences (which include speakers, music, worship and fellowship), Patty interacts with women who struggle with day-to-day issues. "Am I skinny enough? Am I smart enough? Am I making enough cookies? Just am I enough, period?" she says. "The depth of questions I hear really correlates to what the artist is willing to share. And as I’ve gotten more real about weight or divorce or a blended family or whatever, the comments have become deeper.”

Her personal testimony might be important, but Patty also looks outward, striving to understand her audience. "I did a concert not too long ago in Evansville, Ind., after they had been hit by several tornadoes," she says. "That night, I tried to think about what I might be going through in that position. I just really have no problem using examples from my own life, not for the gossip, but for the sake of encouragement to someone else. If it can help them on their journey, I’m happy to share the ups and downs with the audience."

There’s a guiding principle at her concerts, regardless of the specific songs on the set list. Patty may opt for show tunes, Christmas classics or contemporary Christian hits, but she always seeks to evoke a central theme. "It’s a reminder that we are greatly loved and accepted, right where we are," Patty says. "It’s something we all ask about, consciously or unconsciously."

RAYTOWN FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH WAS NOT BUILT FOR CONCERTS. THE SOUND WAS DISTORTED. THE PARKIG LOT DOES NOT HAVE ENOUGH HANDICAP PARKING, YOUR SAFETY IS COMPRISED IF YOU GET OUT LATE DUE TO LIGHTS. NOT ENOUGH LIGHTS -NEED MORE LIGHTS, NO LIGHTS AT ENTRANCE/EXIT.

I've been attending her concerts for 30 yrs and it's obvious "The Voice" can still rock it! This concert was no different from past concerts: she makes you feel like you're hanging out in her living room singing and having a Bible study. Her performance is otherwordly while her testimony is down-to-Earth and unashamedly vulnerable. This concert was bittersweet--the end of one chapter; the beginning of another. It was a pleasure hearing her sing with her husband and kids, who by the way, are "little Sandis"-- not a bass or alto in the bunch! Whether you're a lifelong fan, or someone who just needs a little encouragement, I strongly recommend you take the time to attend!

Was truly disappointed in this performance. We used to be able to get autographs either at a meet and greet, or at the CD table afterwards. Sandi never came out at all to greet friends, and this was a small venue.. maybe 500 people or less.her at all.

The music was more Broadway than Christian some of her older songs were done, but she sang over a pre recorded tape which distorted the sound. There was a live choir, but they could not be heard over her.

We had wanted to get a cd signed that belonged to our daughter that passed away, but was told no.. no autographs, nothing.

We've been following Sandi since 1980.. truly disappointed

I loved the Concert what a blessing. Meeting Sandi personally was also a blessing. What a beautiful person she is. I loved every minute of the Concert.The best part was being right up front. I did'nt miss a thing even with my hearing loss. I been a big fan of Sandi Patty for a long long time, have lots and lots of her CD's.

The Concert was a blessing from the Lord. I hope and pray that she comes here to Michigan again. Her Voice is that of an angel.

The smaller venue size provided a super atmosphere for this uplifting concert. Sandi provided 90 minutes of song and messages. She was joined by her husband, Don Peslis and musical director, Jay Rouse and wife Amy Rouse. There were several points during the concert that Sandi had you laughing and crying at the same time. Truly, her brand as "The Voice" she upholds. Now in both song and speaking. Her heart for God and what He has done in her life shines so brightly.

Sandi Patty is the BEST!! No other voice compares. What a wonderful enternainer. Her face shows all of her emotion and sends it to you. She relives what she is singing. Hope she keeps singing and touring. Come again to PA but come to HBG the Giant center. Many more fans there. Phila. a bad location. I love watching her sing I want to meet her just for a minute. Going to Lancaster to see her in Oct.

The show brought back many wonderful memories of seeing her concerts in the past. Last night proved God is faithful in his work in us. The stories of going through those valleys of tough times and bringing us through them proved God’s faithfulness. So relevant and inspiring us to never lose hope. That it’s ok not to be ok. Praise and worship with Sandi and Sheila was good for my soul.

AMAZING!!! Sandi Patty is such an incredible witness of God and His greatness! She has such an incredible voice and uses it to give glory to God. This is a concert that no one should miss! I am Forever Grateful to God that I was able to attend and that He has blessed Sandi Patty with such an incredible talent which she uses to bring glory to Him and share God's good news!

The concert absolutely fantastic. If you are a Sandi Patty fan, this is a great concert to reminisce with older songs. Veritas and her family provides a great sound and edition. I was also very impressed with the light show. I have sang with Sandi in two concerts and she always amazes me each time with her voice, music and uplifting messages of faith and hope.

Her Forever Grateful Tour was simply amazing. I have followed her since she started. I love how she incorporated her family in her concert. I love her and the things she's overcome in her life. She and her family will always be in my thoughts and prayers.

Veritas- What can I say. They are wonderful. I truly enjoyed them. Looking forward to hearing more of them.
