Are you in the mood for a dance? Well, now’s your chance to bust out your best moves and go back to the '70s with ABBA Voyage.

After 40 years off stage, you can now see the Swedish supergroup reunite and perform their classic hits in one unforgettable concert experience. Described as "jaw-dropping" by fans, ABBA Voyage combines live music with virtual reality to create a unique, immersive show.

Through the powers of modern technology, you’ll see Agnetha, Björn, Benny and Anni-Frid looking and sounding just as they did when they first shot to stardom in 1974. To explain how, the team at RadioTimes.com have put together this handy guide with everything you need to know about the concert, including price, location and how to buy.

Since debuting Waterloo at the Eurovision Song Contest, ABBA has earned a place as one of the biggest bands of all time with hits like Dancing Queen, Angel Eyes and, of course, Mamma Mia becoming part of the cultural zeitgeist. Over the years, the group has had many number one hits and is thought to have sold between 150 million to 385 million records worldwide.

ABBA has also had very public differences over the years, with two divorces splitting them up in 1982. But in 2017, talks of a virtual concert began and by 2021 they officially reunited to record the Voyage album, featuring new songs Don't Shut Me Down and Little Things.

Now, you can see these new songs meet old hits from ABBA Gold for the legendary band's last hurrah. How could you ever refuse? Here’s what you need to know about the experience.

Plus, if you're a fan of the immersive, we've put together a list of the best immersive experiences to try in London. Plus, as always, we've got our recommendations of the best West End shows from long-running classics to new limited-time runs.

What is ABBA Voyage?

How does abba voyage work, where is the abba voyage arena, how much are abba voyage tickets, what are the best seats at abba voyage, how long is the abba voyage concert, how to buy abba voyage tickets.

ABBA Voyage is a live concert performed entirely by CGI versions of the four members of ABBA. The singers don’t appear in person but have instead recorded their voices and body movements to be transformed into 3D avatars (or ABBAtars).

Together, the reunited couples sing 22 of their greatest hits including Voulez-Vous, Lay All Your Love on Me and Thank You for the Music. They also perform perfectly choreographed dances and play virtual instruments, all the while getting backed by a live 10-piece band.

The show runs every Thursday to Monday with concerts usually taking place at 3pm or 7:45pm. In the audience, you can party from a seat, or book a spot on the dancefloor in the middle where you’ll find the other dancing queens. You can also hire a private booth for you and your super troop.

ABBA Voyage is currently running until January 2025, so don’t let this chance slip through your fingers and read on to find out how to get tickets.

ABBA Voyage avatars

The four avatars were created and designed by Industrial Light & Magic, a visual effects company responsible for the CGI in the Star Wars and Marvel films. With motion capture technology, Agnetha, Björn, Benny and Anni-Frid appear life-like on stage to perform the full setlist, complete with singing, dancing and piano-playing.

All members of the band were involved in the creation of the concert, which makes it unsurprising that the avatars are younger versions of themselves. But with the lighting, sound, and cutting-edge special effects, you’d never know that nearly 50 years had passed since they first stepped onto the stage at Eurovision.

The singing was done by the present-day band members who performed the 22-song set over the course of five weeks while wearing motion-capture suits. The choreography is also based on the Swedes’ real movements but was actually filmed by younger body doubles. Then, on the night, all of this is put together into one seamless projection and is backed by a real band.

ABBA Voyage arena

The ABBA Arena is a temporary building that was entirely purpose-built for this project. It sits in Queen Elizabeth Park in Stratford (where the 2012 Olympics took place) - and with a big light-up ABBA sign on the front, it’s pretty hard to miss.

The nearest station is Pudding Mill Lane, which is available on the DLR, but you can also go to Stratford station (on the Jubilee, Central, Elizabeth, DLR and Overground lines) and Stratford International (which has National Rail services).

The only car parking at the venue is 10 blue badge spaces that need to be booked in advance. The building is also entirely accessible for wheelchair users, with accessible tickets and accessible companion tickets available to buy online.

ABBA Voyage hotel packages: where to stay near the ABBA Arena

We know you work all night and day to pay the bills you have to pay, so we’ve broken down the different prices you’ll find at ABBA Voyage.

There are four types of tickets you can book: auditorium seating, accessible seating, dance floor and dance booths. Within that, prices range depending on the date you want to book and where you choose to sit.

According to ABBA Voyage the lowest price you can pay for a ticket is £21.50, however these are rarely seen. Here are the rough base prices for each ticket:

  • Auditorium Seating – from £66
  • Dance Floor – from £77
  • Dance Booths – from £159.50
  • Accessible Seats – from £66

Plus, it's not always that simple as the cost of ABBA Voyage tickets will also vary depending on where you buy them from as the different ticketing sites will always whack on their own extra fees – either at the start or once the tickets are in your basket. Overall, the best prices come from ABBA Voyage's official partner Ticketmaster, otherwise you can try your hand at London Theatre Direct.

There's a lot of questions about where you should sit at ABBA Voyage and, really, there's no one answer.

If you're looking for a boogie, then we'd recommend the Dance Floor or a Dance Booth. But if you're looking to relax, reports have said that the best place to sit is Block H, specifically the centre section – from there, you should have a perfect view of the ABBAtars, but won't feel like you're too far from the stage.

If you're going in a big group, there are eight Dance Booths at the arena, and each have capacity for 10-12 people. You can book the whole booth, or individual tickets. With the booth, you have your own dance floor and dedicated booth bar.

Tickets for the Dance Booths start at £159.50 per person .

The concert lasts for approximately 90 minutes with no interval. In that time, the ABBAtars will sing, dance and play their way through the full mega mix from Honey, Honey to Money, Money, Money.

Doors also open one hour and 45 minutes before the concert, so if you want to arrive early and get yourself in the dancing mood, you can take full advantage of the bar areas.

You can buy ABBA Voyage tickets from a number of official ticketing partners, including Ticketmaster , See Tickets , Today Tix and London Theatre Direct . All sites have good availability in the coming months so you’ve got lots of options for dates.

Shows run all week except Tuesdays and Wednesdays and are currently available to book until May 2025.

ABBA Voyage review: Camp, fun and low-energy… and not just because they’re holograms

George lucas’s production company have created digital versions of a younger abba that look scarily real, article bookmarked.

Do you know what’s comforting? ABBA can open a multi-million-pound stage show full of fancy tech. They can create a purpose-built stadium. They can return to the stage as state-of-the-art avatar versions of their younger selves. And yet people will still respond as though they’re 12 gins deep at a wedding disco. On Thursday night, as the opening bars of each song began – the setlist had remained a surprise – all around me are elated cries of “OH! OHHH!!!” This, by the way, is a compliment. ABBA do something to people.

This is not to downplay what a ground-breaking venture this is. There’s a band of 10, a 20-song setlist, and strobes, beads, and domes of light submerge the crowd. It’s an incredible spectacle. Everything has clearly been done, at great expense, to inspire awe – so much so that it’s sometimes hard to know where to look. But what of the ABBAtars? Industrial Light & Magic, George Lucas’s production company, have created digital versions of a younger ABBA that look scarily real. When projected on bigger screens, they do admittedly have a touch of the video game character about them. My brain got a bit preoccupied with whether it could really be tricked into thinking I was at an ABBA concert. My conclusion: it’s better to think of this as an incredibly premium piece of theatre. It still looks like… the future.

The set-list is mostly crowd-pleasing: “Dancing Queen”, “SOS” and “Waterloo” are all here, with a restrained number of songs from the new album. The naff costumes have had a glow up from Dolce & Gabbana, and choreographer Wayne McGregor has helped to recreate the band’s original moves, which are endearingly low-energy. ABBA’s stage presence is docile, and I don’t think it’s just because they are holograms.

There are brief stretches of languor when the holograms disappear and a baffling anime film is played. Why did the holograms go away, I wonder – do they get tired? I suddenly start thinking about Klara and the Sun , Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel about robots who might have a soul. I decide it’s best not to think about it too much.

There are strangely intimate moments when each ABBAtar appears alone to talk to the crowd. In their younger bodies, they speak in their older voices – Anni-Frid paying tribute to her grandmother, Agnetha thanking fans for the years of support. It’s a reminder that this isn’t just a great technological leap, but something deeply personal for these four individuals. ABBA Voyage preserves their achievement as the world’s greatest pop band forever, and fans will be able to take leave of their senses to the chorus of “Gimme Gimme Gimme” for as long as they still want to.

Super troupers: ABBA should never have worked – but they became the goofy, glorious gift that keeps on giving

There is one specific moment that wins me over. I’m past the point of no return. The ABBAtars make a joke about a quick costume change, then re-emerge in velour jumpsuits, emblazoned with their own names in diamante (these would make a killing if sold in the shop) and perform “Mamma Mia”, complete with deeply uncool dance moves. It is camp. It is knowing. It is ludicrously fun.

ABBA reunited in holographic form

If I have a reservation, it’s that the show lacks emotional connection. After all, the ABBAtars don’t know we’re clapping or singing along; they can’t respond to the man who is practically keening at the end, yelling “More! Mooore!!” But, actually, it isn’t about that. The real alchemy here is happening all around you. It’s a concert where everyone knows the words to every song. It’s a gig where the person sat next to you is going to become your best friend. It’s a haven for endorphins, a safe space for people who want to dance badly and enthusiastically, and sing “Chiquita” at the top of their lungs. I am among my people.

Abba Voyage Review: No Ordinary Abba Night at the Club

With a concert spectacle mixing wizardry and technical skill, the band makes a case for its continued relevance.

woods travel abba voyage

By Juan A. Ramírez

LONDON — I kept turning to my friend, wanting to tell him how young and fresh the two women that put the As in Abba seemed on the giant screens ahead of us. Agnetha Faltskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad were not actually in the room with us, but that’s the kind of stupor Abba Voyage dazzles you into.

Though the Swedish pop band has not played London since 1979, holographic “Abbatars” of the band, modeled in their likeness from that year, are currently filling up a custom-built arena for a 90-minute concert of their greatest hits. A combination of motion-captured performance, animated sequences and a live 10-person band make up the spectacle, which makes a floor-thumping case for the music’s continued relevance.

Projected on a screen that envelops one side of the spaceshiplike auditorium, the Abbatars play mostly as if it were a real concert. They “enter” from below the stage, make banter with the audience, ask for patience as they switch costumes, and return for an encore.

It would feel corny if it weren’t so triumphantly fun, and the Friday night crowd was certainly along for the ride. Largely a mix of couples in their mid 60s and younger, disco-leaning gay men, the attendees sang through every number with the intensity of a therapeutic ritual. Abba Voyage is an exercise in symbol worship that separates itself from an ordinary Abba night at the club through state-of-the-art production values.

“To be or not to be — that is no longer the question,” the band member Benny Andersson declares in a prerecorded solo address, and questions about live performance, truth, eternity and transience are frothed up into the sheer giddiness of (almost) being in the same room as one of the biggest acts in pop music history.

It’s hard to pin down the reasons that such a strange, 21st century endeavor is a crowd-pleasing success, but Abba’s music has its own strange alchemy. Take “Mamma Mia” (performed here in rhinestone-emblazoned pink velour jumpsuits): Why is the hook an Italian catchphrase? Or “Fernando” (sung against a dramatic lunar eclipse): What could these four Swedes possibly have to say about the Mexican revolution? And yet, something about the earnestness of those songs, reflected in the audience’s full-chested belting, has made them inescapable pop standards.

Those two songs are performed straightforwardly, the Abbatars life-size and center stage, with surrounding screens projecting close-ups for those seated in the orchestra level, behind a massive dance floor. Most of the numbers are done this way, recreating a concert experience; the audience was overjoyed to dance along and applaud each step of the way. Choreography, based on the band member’s real movements, but captured from younger body doubles, hit its peak during “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!,” with the digital Lyngstad doing high-kicks and twirls that I’m not sure the real one was capable of in her heyday.

A couple of songs, however, played more like immersive music videos, with the full size of the screens used to tell more thorough visual stories. The band famously sang and performed through its own breakup, and “Knowing Me, Knowing You,” a 1977 anthem mirroring the dissolution of romantic and professional relations in the group, is here performed as an Ingmar Bergman-esque study in missed connections. Its members’ fractured faces sing across a hall of mirrors before ultimately embracing in reconciliation.

Less successful than those episodes were two fully-animated numbers, set to “Eagle” and “Voulez Vous,” following a young traveler’s journey through forests and pyramids, and culminating in their discovery of giant sculptures of the band member’s heads.

Those songs recreate the interstitial bits of a “real” concert, as do speeches from each Abbatar about their success and artistry. The best of these interludes saw the band present the footage from their Eurovision Song Contest-winning performance of “Waterloo,” the song that catapulted them to fame in 1974.

Abba’s music is deceptively complex. What sounds like a simple little song reveals itself to be an intricately layered web of harmonies, melodies, real and digital instruments and angelic English vocals, ever-so-slightly outside the band’s Scandinavian comfort zone.

It’s a mix of wizardry and technical skill that, decades later, after movies and musicals and greatest hits compilations, is still at the pinnacle of pop maximalism. To hear the closing piano riffs on “Chiquitita” in a crowded arena is an exalting experience, and despite its eyebrow-raising premise, Abba Voyage miraculously takes flight.

Without a Song or Dance, What Are We? The ABBA Voyage Experience

Pop pioneers, stage musical mavens, now hologram heroes - ABBA take to the virtual stage in London’s ABBA Voyage © Aidan Moyer

After half a century of indelible hits and a quarter-century of sold-out theatrical engagements, ABBA enter the holographic realm in London’s ABBA Voyage, now in its third year.

Watch: abba voyage teaser trailer.

How can you not love ABBA? There’s a reason why they sold more records than anybody, that music, the songs, my kids love ABBA!

– Dave Grohl to Anderson Cooper, CNN, 2012

I find myself in a london pub for the first time, a germany vs. spain football match on screen, as crimson wigs and silver chrome jumpsuits flit into view..

A DJ strikes up singalongs, boozy renditions of 70s classics – “Islands in the Stream,” “December ‘63,” “We Are Family.” Painstaking costume recreations, disco flare collars and chromium platform boots, indicate we are all here for the same reason: ABBA is reuniting tonight.

A bit of an asterisk; ABBA reunites several times per week at a specially constructed stadium in Southwest London. None of the members are physically present.

This is ABBA Voyage.

In 2022, George Lucas’s ILM Studios partnered with Agnetha Faltskogg, Benny Andersson, Bjorn Ulvaes and Anni-Frid Lyngstadd to create ‘the ABBA-tars.” Employing the CGI motion capture technology that has brought Gollum and Peter Jackson’s Avatar films, the ex-ABBA members spent weeks in skintight suits covered with ping-pong balls. They mimed a selection of their greatest hits, deep cuts, and several new tracks for the eponymous reunion album ABBA Voyage . This was the latest in a series of efforts that inspired an alternate title for this write-up: “ Help, I Drank Too Much Wine and now the Corporeal Forms of ABBA are Resurrected as 3D Avatars Ensconced in Time. ”

ABBA, one of the most successful acts of the 1970s, consisted of two real-life couples who eventually divorced and, when they lost the steam to soldier on, ceased live performance entirely in 1983.

Yet with the advent of the multibillion-dollar Mamma Mia global film and musical enterprise, the nostalgic regalia of the band in its heyday set off something of a pull back into orbit. Andersson and Ulvaeus helped arrange their compositions for the stage, and all four attended the film premiere for Mamma Mia. Then, the inevitable: In Stockholm, 2016, the band commemorated the 50th anniversary of its songwriting genesis with an unannounced reunion performance of “Me and I.” To date, it is the final physical performance of ABBA. This detente seems to have paved the way for a reunion album and the tie-in London concert experience.

We’re guided into a large dome with neon pathways, as a Swedish voice- Benny or Bjorn’s- heralds 15 minutes until the show. Dozens of strings of light hang from the ceiling and perforated circular fixtures hang over the crowd. Onstage, a forest is projected onto three large screens. A large trapezoidal dance pit for standing room guests is flush with the stage.

I’m seated center right in the back row. In addition to costumes and wigs pulled straight from the ABBA repertoire, several audience members are clad in Tron -esque jumpsuits with fluorescent orange piping. This is a multi-generational affair – young families, twenty- and thirty-somethings (the Mamma Mia film crowd), and those who may have seen ABBA in their heyday. Two shows are packed daily. A droning Gregorian chant fades out before we are asked not to film anything, “to maintain the mystery of ABBA voyage.” In this spirit, the veil will only be partially lifted on the evening’s proceedings; Originally slated to run from 2022 through summer 2024, the ABBA Voyage arena-specially built- has been extended through 2026.

The setlist for ABBA voyage is rigid- the band members spent several weeks in 2021 recording specific motion capture- and, to my ears, some of the vocal production sounded more modern, likely captured from those sessions. Each hologram has a “solo spot” with pre-recorded dialogue introducing one song and expressing gratitude for our attendance. There are several presentational workarounds – for “Eagle” and “Voulez-Vous,” we follow the animated adventures of a young warrior heroine in a style reminiscent of the recent Spider-Verse and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles films. The live band that plays the accompanying tracks, a pristine studio unit, gets a vocal showcase on “Does Your Mother Know,” in a gender-swap that wisely employs the revised perspective of the tune from Mamma Mia . Otherwise, the ABBAtars – and the CGI models of ILM – take center stage.

So, the burning question: How well does the effect work?

From a purely visual standpoint, the illusion of ABBA Voyage works best when the slightly oversized band appears in a lineup of four ( in the “BAAB” or “post-divorce” order, as Twitter has pointed out ) in partial shadow. First and foremost, the models themselves are spot-on-likenesses scanned directly from the modern members and artificially de-aged. The laser light fixtures and unrelenting dance party vibe scarcely allow the audience to dwell on any idiosyncrasies. Each costume is meticulously recreated and shimmers, sparkles and flows accordingly in medium-length shots of the band in motion.

The limitations of this technology, however, are mostly laid bare when the giant de-aged faces of the ABBA models are projected on the screens that flank the main stage, without dramatic lighting. The lip-synchronization occasionally teeters off the tightrope of the uncanny valley ( see: motion capture films like The Polar Express ). Only one number fully stretches the limits of the technology beyond reasonable doubt – “Lay All Your Love on Me” features contortions that wouldn’t be out of place in an anime and the effect is a bit dizzying.

Now, the follow-up question: Does any of this make ABBA Voyage any less affecting?

There is a push-pull the moment the lights dim. ABBA are four living, working individuals who are choosing not to tour and instead present a facsimile of their heyday. Each member gamely recorded their parts for this and the tie-in reunion album, and provide insight and quips in the form of their hologram selves during the evening’s proceedings. At about the three-song mark, the entire experience becomes so immersive and nostalgic that most qualms fade away. Everyone is on their feet, singing along to every word, growing teary-eyed as they reminisce on where they first heard these tunes. The ABBA catalog is indelible.

I find myself fighting back tears on several occasions. These are not the real singers of the songs I learned when I was six years old, singing along with my sister in the back of the family Toyota Avalon. And yet my father, two seats to my right, is singing along just the same, as is my mom. The woman to my left, who has otherwise sat in silent appreciation for the entire evening, hears the opening piano to “Thank You For the Music.” Without moving, she sings every word in a beautiful voice. And the tears begin to flow.

“So I say thank you for the music, the songs I’m singing Thanks for all the joy they’re bringing Who can live without it? I ask in all honesty What would life be? Without a song or a dance, what are we? So I say thank you for the music, for giving it to me”

There are several musical and visual surprises in store for the evening, but I won’t spoil them here. After all, I must do my part to “maintain the mystery of ABBA Voyage.” I owe them that much at least.
