Valero Texas Open at TPC San Antonio

The Oaks course was designed by Greg Norman and with a player consultant by Sergio Garcia. The Oaks course reflects the TOUR’s departure from the modern tournament-style course (expansive grass areas and spectator mounding) to a more natural look and feel, without sacrificing the fan experience making it very tournament-friendly. The Oaks course will host the PGA TOUR’s Valero Texas Open from April 4 – 7, 2024.

The 2024 edition of the Valero Texas Open, will return to TPC San Antonio’s Oaks course for the 15th year. This will be the sixth year of a 10-year contract extension between the PGA TOUR and Valero Energy Corporation; a deal which positions the tournament in a coveted slot on the TOUR schedule– the week preceding the Masters Tournament.

ABOUT THE VALERO TEXAS OPEN

The Valero Texas Open, first played in 1922, is the 3rd oldest PGA TOUR tournament. It’s only younger than the Western Open (1899) and Canadian Open (1904). If you include the U.S. Open (1895) managed by the USGA, and the PGA Championship (1916) managed by the PGA of America, then the Valero Texas Open is the sixth oldest professional tournament worldwide. The Valero Texas Open is the oldest professional golf tournament to be held in the same city its entire existence. In 2022, the Valero Texas Open celebrated its 100th anniversary.

Its list of champions includes some of the greatest names in golf history: Walter Hagen, Byron Nelson, Ben Hogan, Sam Snead, Arnold Palmer, Ben Crenshaw, Hale Irwin, Lee Trevino, Nick Price, Justin Leonard, Zach Johnson, Adam Scott, Jimmy Walker, and Jordan Spieth, to name a few.

Since Valero became title sponsor in 2002, the Valero Texas Open is always driven by its charitable mission – in 2015, the tournament raised $10.4 million for charity, making it proud yet humbled to become only the fourth PGA TOUR event to eclipse the $100 Million milestone in funds raised for charity. Thanks to the generosity of the community, the Valero Texas Open, along with the Champions fore Charity fundraising program, and the Valero Benefit for Children, raised a record breaking $23 million in 2023, bringing the grand total to $232 million in charitable giving. Please visit www.ValeroTexasOpen.com for more information.

2023 Valero Texas Open Recap

The First Look: Valero Texas Open

The First Look

The First Look: Valero Texas Open

Change Text Size

The 101st Valero Texas Open tees off at TPC San Antonio after an exciting start to the TOUR’s turn through Texas at the World Golf Championships-Dell Technologies Match Play. One of the TOUR’s most historic events features a strong mix of established names and up-and-comers.

FIELD NOTES: Rickie Fowler is teeing it up at TPC San Antonio eager to return to the Masters. Fowler has seen promising signs this season, ranking 25th in the FedExCup, but will need a win to avoid missing a third consecutive Masters… J.J. Spaun, fresh off an appearance in the Round of 16 last week, returns to the site of his first PGA TOUR title. Spaun looks to become the first golfer to defend his Valero Texas Open title since Zach Johnson in 2008-09… Former Masters winner Hideki Matsuyama is in the field after withdrawing last week due to injury… Matt Kuchar, who also made the Round of 16 at the Dell and tied Tiger Woods’ record for most victories in tournament history, is in action… Corey Conners (2019) and Kevin Chappell (2017) are among the past champions at TPC San Antonio returning to action… Rookie of the Year frontrunner Taylor Montgomery (his four top-10 finishes so far this season have him 22nd on the FedExCup standings) is among the robust group of Korn Ferry Tour graduates eager to keep adding to their FedExCup point totals this week…

HIGHEST-RATED PLAYERS IN THE FIELD

STORYLINES:

1. WILL ANOTHER FIRST-TIMER WIN?

Over the last 11 editions of the Valero Texas Open, it’s become the first TOUR title for five of the golfers who have rocked the cowboy boots. With youth being served again this year with sponsor invites and a hearty handful of next-generation stars coming into this week with momentum, don’t be surprised if it’s another first-timer who wins in San Antonio.

2. EXCITING STRETCH

TPC San Antonio offers one of the more intriguing finishing stretches on TOUR. The par-3 16th is one of the rare holes in the world with a bunker in the middle of the green. Next players face the drivable par-4 17th and risk-reward, par-5 18th that is guarded by a small creek fronting the green. It’s the sort of understated water hazard that can keep players on their toes.

3. LAST ROAD TO AUGUSTA

It all comes down to this. The winner of the Valero Texas Open will be the final person to stamp his ticket to Augusta National – something that’s happened two out of the last three trips around TPC San Antonio. J.J. Spaun broke through for his maiden TOUR title a year ago and got into his first Masters, while Corey Conners went from Monday Qualifier to Masters debutant in 2019. Will it be another extra special week for the winner?

SPONSOR EXEMPTIONS: Akshay Bhatia is back in action on the PGA TOUR. Bhatia, who just accepted Special Temporary Membership after his runner-up result at the Puerto Rico Open, was inside the top five through 36 holes in Puntacana before finishing T24, his third top-25 in six starts this season. He won The Bahamas Great Exuma Classic on the Korn Ferry Tour last year but his Special Temporary Membership allows him to accept unlimited sponsor exemptions this season… Two members of last year’s University of Texas NCAA title team, Pierceson Coody and Cole Hammer, were extended invites into their home state’s open. Pierceson Coody is making his fourth TOUR start of the season. Coody, who topped the PGA TOUR University rankings a year ago, notched a tie for 14th at the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard. He’s already a two-time winner on the Korn Ferry Tour, as well… Hammer, who is making his ninth TOUR start of the season, recorded a T5 at The RSM Classic in the fall. … Charley Hoffman is back in action at the Valero. Hoffman has earned a bit of a cult following at this event as its leading money leader. He was runner-up in 2021 and 2019 and won in 2016. He missed his first cut in 16 starts at this event last season… Luke Donald and Padraig Harrington – the current and former European Ryder Cup captains – are in the field… Ryan Fox, a three-time winner on the DP World Tour is teeing it up. This will be Fox’s fourth PGA TOUR start of the season after two top-30 results at the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard and THE PLAYERS, plus a T17 at last week’s World Golf Championships… Kazuki Higa is teeing it up on TOUR before he makes his Masters debut next week. Higa is a six-time winner on the Japan Golf Tour and topped that Tour’s money list in 2022. … Ryan Gerard, who is on the cusp of earning Special Temporary Membership, also earned an invitation. Gerard finished fourth at The Honda Classic after Monday qualifying and T11 at the Puerto Rico Open. He has made the cut in three of four PGA TOUR starts this season. … Former Texas A&M star Chandler Phillips is in the field. He won earlier this year on the Korn Ferry Tour and is third on that circuit’s points list.

FEDEXCUP: Winner receives 500 FedExCup points.

COURSE: TPC San Antonio (Oaks Course), 7,438 yards, par 72. This marks the 14th time the Pete Dye/Greg Norman design will play host to the Valero Texas Open. Opened in January 2010, the layout features just 100 feet of elevation and boasts a traditional design that balances wider fairways with narrower tree-lined fairways for strategic options to the greens. The downhill holes often play into the prevailing wind while uphill holes play downwind. The last two winners at TPC San Antonio leaned on elite ball striking to find the winner’s circle, as both J.J. Spaun (2022) and Jordan Spieth (2021) were inside the top five in Strokes Gained: Tee to Green.

72-HOLE RECORD: 254, Tommy Armour III (2003 at La Cantera). TPC San Antonio record: 268, Corey Conners (2019).

18-HOLE RECORD: 60, Bart Bryant (3rd round, 2004 at La Cantera), Zach Johnson (3rd round, 2009 at La Cantera). TPC San Antonio record: 62, Trey Mullinax (3rd round, 2018)

LAST TIME: J.J. Spaun closed out his first PGA TOUR title with a final-round 69 and along with donning the winner’s cowboy boots at the Valero Texas Open, he also punched his first ticket to the Masters. Spaun, who started his final round with a double bogey, added five birdies on his card over the remaining 17 holes to win by two over Matt Kuchar and Matt Jones. The win came in Spaun’s 147th PGA TOUR start. His previous best TOUR finish was a runner-up at the 2018 RSM Classic. Spaun finished at 13 under while Jones and Kuchar were at 11 under. Adam Hadwin, Beau Hossler, Charles Howell II, and Troy Merritt finished a shot further back and tied for fourth.

Complete 2024 NFL Draft guide; Heat stun the Celtics

How to watch 2024 zurich classic, 2024 zurich classic odds, picks, computer simulation, corey conners wins valero texas open for 2nd time in 5 years.

SAN ANTONIO (AP) Corey Conners won the Valero Texas Open for the second time in five years Sunday for his second PGA Tour title, closing with a 4-under 68 for a one-stroke victory over rookie Sam Stevens.

Also the 2019 winner, Conners had a 15-under 273 total on TPC San Antonio’s Oaks Course. The Canadian now heads to the Masters, where he tied sixth last year for his second straight top-10 finish at Augusta National.

“I had been feeling really good about my game, and looking forward to getting back here to San Antonio,” Conners said. “When I won in 2019, it was different, a real roller-coaster final round. I dug deep on the back nine, so I tried to channel that part of it today.”

A shot behind Patrick Rodgers starting play, Conners had a three-shot lead after he birdied No. 15. Stevens eagled the 17th, but missed a 9-foot birdie putt at 18 that would have tied it. Connors ended it with a 3-foot par putt on 18.

“I saw he had hit in the fairway, so I figured he could manage making a 5,” Stevens said. “He had it in the bag when I missed that putt on 18. I knew I had to do something cool on the last couple of holes, and I was pretty at calm, pretty at peace on 17. I couldn’t believe I got it as close as I did, and was able to make that one. That gave me a chance.”

Stevens shot a 66. He was third last week at the PGA Tour’s stop in the Dominican Republic.

Sam Ryder (66) and Matt Kuchar (68) followed at 13 under.

Rodgers saw a chance for his first tour victory and first Masters spot slip away. He shot a 73 to finish fifth at 11 under.

“Yeah, disappointing day,” said Rodgers, who had the 54-hole lead at an event for the fourth time in his career. “I feel like I made some good swings that kind of the wind got or they landed a few yards in the wrong spots and it ended up costing me bogeys. That was my day today.”

Conner’s best finish since hoisting the 2019 Texas Open trophy was a third-place effort at the Arnold Palmer Invitational last year.

Conners led after the first round with a 64 when the weather-delayed opening 18 finished Friday. But his second-round 72 dropped him three behind Rodgers after 36 holes, which Conners cut to a stroke with his third-round 69.

Four things to know about TPC San Antonio, the home of the Valero Texas Open

Pat Ralph

The PGA Tour continues its two-week stretch in the Lone Star State at TPC San Antonio for the Valero Texas Open. TPC San Antonio, which has played host to the Texas Open since the club opened for business in 2010, features two 18-hole championship courses for golfers: the AT&T Canyons and AT&T Oaks Courses. But this week’s Tour event, the last before the Masters next week, will only be played on the Oaks Course. Here’s everything that you need to know about the AT&T Oaks Course at TPC San Antonio, which rated as one of the 12 most difficult holes on Tour last year.

The origin of the course:  As previously mentioned, TPC San Antonio opened in February 2010 before it became the host of the Texas Open later that year. Both tracks on the resort property are part of the PGA Tour’s TPC network of courses, which also includes TPC Sawgrass and TPC Scottsdale. Furthermore, both tracks were designed by two of the most well-known course designers around. The AT&T Canyons Course was designed by Pete Dye, while the AT&T Oaks Course was built by Greg Norman. The Dye-designed Canyons Course has also hosted Tour events, as it was the home of the AT&T Championship on the Champions Tour from 2011-2015.

The design of the course:  The Norman-designed AT&T Oaks Course, which was actually done in consultation with Sergio Garcia, is a par-72 track that runs 7,435 yards from the championship tees. The course, which offers golfers five tee boxes to choose from, is described as being a traditionally-designed track with both narrow tree-lined and wide fairways, as well as lengthy holes. When designing the course, the two-time British Open champion sought to bring in the natural landscape to the course to make it reflective of what the area consisted of.

Golfers will also come across numerous water hazards, cavernous bunkers that are strategically-placed throughout the course, and rolling greens. Wind is a constant factor on the course, as golfers are either going to be hitting into the wind or with it at their backs depending upon if the hole is uphill or downhill. Bermuda grasses are used on the entire course as well.

The Oaks Course at TPC San Antonio is a Greg Norman-designed course.

Easiest hole: The p ar-5 14th hole, which runs 567 yards from the championship tees, had an average score of 4.486 last year, which was the lowest of the par-5’s on the course. The highest-number of eagles (14) and birdies (237) on the course are collected at this hole, while the fewest-number of bogeys (25) are earned here too. As the shortest par-5 on the course, this hole provides the golfer with a great opportunity to reach the green in two shots and earn a birdie or eagle.

The 14th hole also features one of the course’s wide fairways that Norman built. Even if one doesn’t make the green in two shots, a layup will give players a short pitch to the green. The key to succeeding at this hole is to stay away from the right-side bunker, or a bogey could be coming your way.

Most difficult hole:  The  par-4 first hole, which runs 454 yards from the championship tees, was one of the 30 most difficult holes on Tour last year. The most bogeys on the course last year (132) were amassed at the first hole too. Playing downhill, golfers will be playing into the prevailing wind at this hole. The key to performing well at this hole is hitting a good tee shot to set yourself up well later. If you hit your drive down the left side of the fairway, you’ll have a better view of the green.

A good tee shot will give you an opportunity to reach the green in two shots. To make the green, aim for the right with your approach shot, as the green is surrounded by bunkers to the left and front. If you can finish with par here on the moderately-undulating green, you’re off to a good start. The first hole’s 4.296 scoring average was the highest of the par-4’s on the course last year.

Every PGA Tour course YOU can play, ranked by price

W ith PGA Tour heading to a municipal golf course this week in Memorial Park for the Houston Open , it marks one of the cool times you can play the same shots the pros play.

But, it’s really not that rare of an occurrence.

While the 2002 U.S. Open was celebrated as “the People’s U.S. Open” for being played at a municipal golf course, Bethpage Black, for the first time, the PGA Tour has actually been playing at munis and public access courses for decades.

Last week’s Valspar Championship host, Innisbrook Resort’s Copperhead course, is public. So too is TPC Sawgrass, home of the Players Championship, although it may cost a pretty penny . With a stay at the famous Bay Hill Lodge, you can also secure a tee time at host of the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

Even two of this year’s major championship hosts are open to the public.

In fact, of the 39 events on the PGA Tour this season, 20 of them will be contested on 23 different golf courses that you can play.

But playing PGA Tour tracks doesn’t come cheap with greens fees at some courses surpassing $500 while many of the resorts require you to stay on the property.

Keep reading below for a list of all the PGA Tour’s public access courses for the 2024 season, ranked by greens fee.

PGA Tour players learn how much loyalty is worth in new equity program

Players who stayed loyal to the PGA Tour amid lucrative recruitment by Saudi-funded LIV Golf are starting to find out how much that loyalty could be worth.

The PGA Tour on Wednesday began contacting the 193 players eligible for the $930 million from a “Player Equity Program” under the new PGA Tour Enterprises .

Recommended Videos

The bulk of that money — $750 million — went to 36 players based on their career performance, the last five years and how they fared in a recent program that measured their star power.

How much they received was not immediately known. Emails were going out Wednesday afternoon and Thursday informing players of what they would get. One person who saw a list of how the equity shares were doled out said the names had been redacted. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because many details of the program were not made public.

The Telegraph reported Tiger Woods was to receive $100 million in equity and Rory McIlroy could get $50 million, without saying how it came up with those numbers.

Commissioner Jay Monahan outlined the first-of-its-kind equity ownership program in a Feb. 7 memo to players, a week after Strategic Sports Group became a minority investor in the new commercial PGA Tour Enterprises.

The private equity group, a consortium of professional sports owners led by the Fenway Sports Group, made an initial investment of $1.5 billion that could be worth $3 billion. The tour is still negotiating with the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia — the financial muscle behind the rival LIV Golf league — as an investor.

Any deal with PIF would most certainly increase the value of the equity shares.

Another person with knowledge of the Player Equity Program, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the private nature of the dealings, said the equity money is not part of the SSG investment. That money was geared toward growth capital.

Golf.com received a series of informational videos on the Player Equity Program that was sent to players and reported only 50% of the equity would vest after four years, 25% more after six years and the rest of it after eight years.

It also reported how the 36 players from the top tier were judged on “career points,” such as how long they were full members, victories, how often they reached the Tour Championship and extra points for significant victories.

Jason Gore, the tour's chief player officer, said in one of the videos, “It's really about making sure that our players know the PGA Tour is the best place to compete and showing them how much the Tour appreciates them being loyal.”

Emails also were sent to 64 players who would share $75 million in aggregate equity based on the past three years, and $30 million to 57 players who are PGA Tour members. Also, $75 million in equity shares was set aside for 36 past players instrumental in building the tour.

The program has an additional $600 million in equity grants that are recurring for future PGA Tour players. Those would be awarded in amounts of $100 million annually started in 2025.

Players only get equity shares from one of the four tiers now, although everyone would be eligible for the recurring grants.

Even with equity ownership geared toward making the PGA Tour better, the concern was players questioning who got how much and whether they received their fair share.

LIV Golf lured away seven major champions dating to 2018 since it launched in 2022, all with guaranteed contracts and most of them believed to have topped $100 million.

McIlroy, playing this week in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, was asked how much would make players feel validated for their decision to stay with the PGA Tour.

“I think the one thing we’ve learned in golf over the last two years is there’s never enough,” McIlroy replied.

Tiger Woods receives a hefty reward for his loyalty to the PGA Tour. How many zeros does the check have?

The amount that the golfers receive for staying is determined by a metric called "career points".

I t is often said that loyalty pays, and in Tiger Woods' case, it surely does. Especially after all the uncertainty that has surrounded golf for the past few months with players entertaining the idea of leaving the PGA Tour for what it could be a more lucrative agreement.

LIV Golf , also known as the Super Golf League , already has signed a great number of experienced and talented player like Phil Mickelson and Sergio Garcia and is looking to add more to increase its popularity and compete with the PGA by getting TV deals that steal viewers.

san antonio pga tour

Even with this innovative circuit attracting some players, others have opted to stay loyal to what it is still the most important professional golfer's organization. Because of that, a reward is being given to many players that have stayed.

Tiger Woods is one of the most benefited, but not the only one

Tiger Woods has received a notification that he will receive up to $100 million in equity for staying loyal to the PGA Tour . He received an email from Sawgrass HQ with the surprising news. Interesting enough is the fact that he is not the only one that would benefit from his decision.

Reports indicate that Rory McIlroy will also get a lot of money with an amount that can be around $50 million for not joining LIV Golf . There is no reason to believe that other players wont receive some kind of reward as well, maybe under the $50 million figure but a considerable amount of money.

PGA Tour commissioner, Jay Monahan has been behind a deal that help welcome new investment in the circuit. Strategic Sports Group invested $1.5 billion into PGA Tour Enterprises about three months ago and this has permitted the distribution of this compensations to golfers.

Strategic Sports Group is a consortium of investor led by Liverpool FC owner Fenway Sports. There is belief that the money will by distributed to 193 PGA Tour golfers .

Rory McIlroy interested in return to PGA Tour policy board: ‘I think I can be helpful’

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SOUTH CAROLINA - APRIL 20: Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland looks on after playing the first hole during the third round of the RBC Heritage at Harbour Town Golf Links on April 20, 2024 in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. (Photo by Jared C. Tilton/Getty Images)

NEW ORLEANS, La. — While Rory McIlroy couldn’t confirm a return to the PGA Tour policy board until a vote takes place, McIlroy did confirm reports of current board member Webb Simpson potentially stepping away and requesting that McIlroy take his place.

And, yes, McIlroy is interested in the return.

“I think I can be helpful,” McIlroy said. “I don’t think there’s been much progress made in the last eight months, and I was hopeful that there would be. I think I could be helpful to the process.”

McIlroy said he’d only do it if people want him involved.

“When Webb and I talked and he talked about potentially coming off the board, I said, ‘Look, if it was something that other people wanted, I would gladly take that seat,’” McIlroy continued.

The PGA Tour policy board is a collection of six active tour players with voting power for both the PGA Tour and PGA Tour Enterprises, its new for-profit venture with outside investors. Unlike most sports in which teams have owners who vote on issues, PGA Tour players are essentially owners, and the six-player policy board wields massive power. The current board includes Tiger Woods, Patrick Cantlay, Jordan Spieth, Adam Scott, Peter Malnati and Simpson.

For so long, McIlroy, the world No. 2, was the most public face of the PGA Tour in its war with LIV Golf, the league funded by the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia. It’s why McIlroy surprised many by leaving the policy board in November, citing the need to focus on golf as his obligations with the board took up so much time.

He told reporters that month in Dubai: “It just got to the point where I couldn’t fit it all in. I’m thinking as we go into the next year, as I try to get ramped up for Augusta and all those tournaments, I just can’t see me putting the time and the energy into it. If I feel like I’m not prepared going into those meetings then it is better off if someone else takes my place, who is able to put the time and the energy into it.”

But it was clear McIlroy was scaling back his strong, public position on golf matters as far back as the June 6 announcement of a framework agreement between the PGA Tour and PIF. He said he felt like a “sacrificial lamb” when called to speak at the Canadian Open that week, and he noticeably did less press and gave less opinions from June 6 on.

He took a slightly different public approach to begin 2024. He still did less press, but he returned to speaking publicly about golf’s divide , often going against PGA Tour policy board members. McIlroy has repeatedly stated his desire for the game to unify, saying wins at signature events would feel cheapened without all the best players there. He called for more of a global golf structure in line with European soccer’s Champions League structure. And when Spieth — who replaced McIlroy on the board — said in February a deal with Strategic Sports Group investing $1.5 billion meant the tour didn’t “need” a deal with PIF, McIroy came out two days later saying he had a “frank” hourlong discussion about it.

“My thing was if I’m the original (potential) investor that thought that they were going to get this deal done back in July, and I’m hearing a board member say that, you know, we don’t really need them now, how are they going to think about that? What are they gonna feel about that?” McIlroy told Sports Illustrated .

Meanwhile, McIlroy’s game has struggled. Coming off two of the best seasons of his career, he has just one top-15 finish in eight starts.

Now, reports claim McIlroy’s return would be a boon for the PGA Tour, SSG and even PIF, as McIlroy has developed a friendly relationship with PIF governor Yasir Al-Ramayyan.

“I feel like I can be helpful,” McIlroy said Wednesday. “I feel like I care a lot, and I have some pretty good experience and good connections within the game and sort of around the wider sort of ecosystem and everything that’s going on.

“But at the end of the day, it’s not quite up to me to just come back on the board. There’s a process that has to be followed. But I’m willing to do it if that’s what people want, I guess.”

San Antonio Spurs Lottery odds: What are the chances of landing the No. 1 pick?

The San Antonio Spurs won big in last year's NBA Draft Lottery landing the No. 1 pick and Victor Wembanyama. Can they summon the magic again?

By Ian Levy | Apr 24, 2024, 9:02 AM EDT

May 16, 2023; Chicago, IL, USA; NBA Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum (right) congratulates San Antonio

With generational prospect Victor Wembanyama available, the San Antonio Spurs got incredibly lucky, drawing the No. 1 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft Lottery. There was just a 14 percent chance they would finish at the top but the only thing that matters was seeing their logo in the last enveolpe opened.

The Spurs did take Victor Wembanyama and enjoyed a transcendent rookie season from their new centerpiece. Wembanyama averaged 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 3.6 blocks and 1.2 steals per game. He's the runaway favorite for the Rookie of the Year and a finalist for Defensive Player of the Year .

However, despite his rookie heroics, the Spurs finished with an identical 22-60 record to the year before and will once again be near the top of the NBA Draft Lottery odds.

What are the Spurs chances at the No. 1 pick in the NBA Draft?

The Spurs have the fifth-best odds of winning the No. 1 pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, at 10.5 percent. They have a 42.1 percent chance of jumping into the top 4.

The Rockets get the Nets pick regardless of where it lands because it was traded unprotected. Their own pick is owed to the Thunder but protected No. 1-4. So if they leap into the top four, they keep it. If not, it goes to the Thunder.

The Warriors' pick is protected No. 1-4. If they don't leap into the top four, they owe that pick to the Trail Blazers.

Who could the Spurs take with the No. 1 pick in the NBA Draft?

Unlike last year, the 2024 Draft Class doesn't not have a clearcut No. 1 pick. That puts a lot of prospects into play for the Spurs but it's likely that they target someone with the potential to be a primary creator and ball-handler. Things became infinitely easier for Wembanyama when steady point guard Tre Jones took over for point-forward project Jeremy Sochan and the Spurs do have some young talent on the wings — Devin Vassell, Keldon Johnson, Sochan and Malaki Branham.

According to Chris Kline's latest FanSided NBA Draft Big Board , there are several prospects who could fit the bill for the Spurs at No. 1.

  • Nikola Topic — Average athleticism but a crafty creator with size (6-foot-6), high-level European experience, excellent passing instincts and positive shooting mechanics. Read our full Nikola Topic scouting report here.
  • Rob Dillingham — More of a scorer than a pure point guard but a creative shot-maker with excellent body control and three-level scoring instincts. Read our full Rob Dillingham scouting report here.
  • Reed Sheppard — Might be better off as a secondary creator, but one of the best shooters in the class with excellent defensive and passing instincts even with average size and athleticism. Read our full Reed Sheppard scouting report here.
  • Isaiah Collier — An explosive lead guard with excellent athletic tools but shaky results in his freshman season. Collier was a potential No. 1 pick to start the college season and could re-emerge during pre-draft workouts. Read our full Isaiah Collier scouting report he re.

How many times have the Spurs won the No. 1 pick in the NBA Draft?

In addition to 2013 when the Spurs selected Victor Wembanyama, the Spurs previously won the No. 1 pick in the NBA Draft lottery two other times. They won the No. 1 pick in 1987 and selected David Robinson, and in 1997 when they selected Tim Duncan. Both players went on to Hall-of-Fame careers and multiple championships (albeit Robinson's were won as a teammate of Duncan's). Needless to say the Spurs have a great track record of finding historic talent at the top of the draft.

When is the NBA Draft Lottery?

The NBA Draft Lottery will be held Sunday, May 12 in Chicago, at 3:00 p.m. ET and televised on ESPN.

Spencer Levin won last year's edition at 20-under par, after Tyson Alexander went back-to-back in the first two editions at 23-under and 22-under respectively.

  • Low 18-hole score: 62, 12 times (Last: Noah Goodwin/2023/Round 1)
