Celebrity Cruises

  • November, 13 2019

Celebrity Cruises is an award-winning cruise line marked by the iconic ‘X’. It was founded in 1989 with the objective of providing a high-quality, premium cruise experience at an intelligent price for the discerning cruiser.

Celebrity Cruises logo

In 1997, Celebrity Cruises merged with Royal Caribbean International , bringing together two extraordinary cruise brands within one corporation, Royal Caribbean Cruises, Ltd (RCL).

Celebrity Cruises has created a distinctive expression of superior quality - offering grand style, attentive service, enriching and inspiring onboard programmes, spacious accommodations, and exceptional dining.  They define the whole experience as ‘modern luxury’.

It has an impressive fleet of premium cruise ships which travel to many exciting destinations including Alaska, the Bahamas, Bermuda, Canada, the Caribbean, Europe, the Galapagos, Hawaii, Pacific Coastal, Panama Canal and South America.

They pride themselves on offering an exceptional personalised service and have a strong team on board to anticipate guests’ needs and take note of the little details, whether it’s greeting them by name or having chilled towels ready for those returning from a busy shore excursion.

Working for Celebrity Cruises means visiting more than 70 countries in seven continents, interacting with a crew of more than 100 different nationalities, getting competitive pay and extensive holiday time, and having rapid promotion opportunities for ‘star’ performers.

Life on a ship as a member of the Celebrity team is fast-paced and challenging. It is also very rewarding personally and professionally. Crew members get to visit some of the most beautiful places in the world while making friends with co-workers and guests of different nationalities.

The main concept of Celebrity Cruises is to offer almost deluxe cruises at more affordable prices (something impossible at first sight), but the company has turned this concept into winning formula throughout the past seven-eight years. The cruise line introduced a new generation of cruise ships, representing classic cruising, updated for contemporary life style. Royal Caribbean International acquired Celebrity Cruises in 1997, but Celebrity Cruises continues to operate as a separate brand. The cruise line introduced a new generation of cruise ships, representing classic cruising, updated for contemporary life style. Celebrity Cruises was the brainchild of John Chandris of the renowned Greek shipping family, who created the cruise line in 1989, promising he would "exceed expectations." He accomplished his goal by offering much higher standards of food and service than cruisers were accustomed to in a mid-price cruise experience. In addition to the smaller Horizon and Zenith ships, Chandris ordered three new stunning cruise ships in the mid 1990's, Celebrity Century, Celebrity Galaxy and Celebrity Mercury. They were the first mid-price cruise ships to boast suites with butlers, the largest spas at sea, an extensive collection of private art, large staterooms in all categories and sophisticated touches such as a piano lounge, champagne and martini bars.

Acquired by Royal Caribbean International in 1997, Celebrity Cruises has retained its own identity, with food and service maintained at high levels. Celebrity Cruises has launched Celebrity Constellation, along with her sister-ships Celebrity Summit and Celebrity Infinity, followed by a larger quintet, the Solstice class - Celebrity Solstice, Celebrity Equinox, Celebrity Eclipse, Celebrity Silhouette and Celebrity Reflection. The latter entered service in 2019. The goal is ambitious: the company is introducing a series of enhancements that it hopes will position Celebrity Cruises as a legitimate Crystal Cruises competitor, albeit with a younger passenger demographic.

Celebrity Cruises, with the launch in 2004 of its Xpedition sub-brand, is also moving into an intriguing new direction. Aiming to offer its upmarket, active passenger base a new option, the cruise line is featuring more unusual cruise experiences. At this point, the major thrust focuses on the Galapagos, where Celebrity has become the only big ship cruise line to offer year-round sailings. But wait: you won't find Millennium or Galaxy (or even Horizon or Zenith) trawling these small ship waters. Instead, the company has acquired the former Sun Bay I, a 2,329-ton 98-passenger cruise ship, and transformed it into Celebrity Xpedition. The aim? To combine the line's big stylishness with more adventure-oriented destinations. The company is planning to expand the concept to include cruises to Antarctica, the Arctic and Alaska via a former Soviet icebreaker it will charter from Quark Expeditions, an adventure cruise specialist.

In 2016 Celebrity Cruises acquired the Galapagos Islands tour operator Ocean Adventures and its two ships, the 48-guest M/V Eclipse and the 16-guest catamaran M/C Athala II. The move expands Celebrity's guest capacity in the Galapagos by 65 percent. In 2019 Celebrity Cruises introduced the most luxurius ship ever to sail in the Galapagos - the amazing mega yacht Celebrity Flora, built in the shipyard De Hoop BV (Lobith, Holland).

In 2014, Celebrity Cruises signed of a letter of intent with STX shipyard in France for a new class of vessels - the Edge Class. The first ship Celebrity Edge was christened on December 04, 2018 by the Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai. The second Edge class vessel - Celebrity Apex debuted in 2020

One of the good cruise lines to work for, it offers competitive salaries and fairness to it's employees.

Cruise ship passengers isolating amid bug outbreak

A number of people are isolating on a cruise ship following the outbreak of a stomach bug.

The P&O Cruises vessel Ventura left Southampton on 11 May for a two-week cruise around the Canary Islands.

Following reports of passengers with "gastrointestinal symptoms", the company said "enhanced" sanitation protocols had been put in place.

The company would not confirm how many people on the ship were unwell.

It said a further "enhanced and extended sanitisation" took place on Friday while Ventura was docked in Tenerife.

A P&O spokesperson said on-board launderettes had been closed and passengers were not allowed to serve themselves from the buffets but stated the ship was not on lockdown.

A "wide range of approved protocols" have been implemented, they said, including "constant and enhanced sanitation" by specialist teams and "isolating those affected".

"Ensuring the health and wellbeing of all guests and crew is our absolute priority," the spokesperson added.

Expedia says Rathi Murthy and Sreenivas Rachamadugu, respectively its CTO and senior vice president of core services product & engineering, are no longer employed at the travel booking company. In a statement shared with Bloomberg and elsewhere, Expedia said Murthy and Rachamadugu are “no longer employed at Expedia Group” due to an unspecified “violation of company policy.” TechCrunch reached out to Expedia for confirmation and additional comment.

Deal Dive: Sagetap looks to bring enterprise software sales into the 21st century

When the founders of Sagetap, Sahil Khanna and Kevin Hughes, started working at early-stage enterprise software startups, they were surprised to find that the companies they worked at were trying to sell their innovative tech through old-school methods like repeated cold emails and calls. Khanna, a former product marketer, and Hughes, a former sales manager, knew these methods weren't effective to either sell software or help buyers get the solution they needed. "Company executives are frustrated, their email is destroyed," Khanna, Sagetap's CEO, told TechCrunch.

This Week in AI: OpenAI moves away from safety

This week in AI, OpenAI once again dominated the news cycle (despite Google's best efforts) with a product launch, but also, with some palace intrigue. The company unveiled GPT-4o, its most capable generative model yet, and just days later effectively disbanded a team working on the problem of developing controls to prevent "superintelligent" AI systems from going rogue. Reporting -- including ours -- suggests that OpenAI deprioritized the team's safety research in favor of launching new products like the aforementioned GPT-4o, ultimately leading to the resignation of the team's two co-leads, Jan Leike and OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever.

A popular cruise line failed a surprise inspection by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) , which cited major concerns in “65 different areas.”

The cruise liner, “Margaritaville at Sea Paradise,” had several issues when the CDC conducted its health and safety inspection on May 1, 2024. The ship must correct those issues or else be prevented from sailing, according to the CDC’s vessel sanitation program report.

The 65 issues that the CDC highlighted included food preparation in guest and crew facilities, cleanliness of plumbing, cleanliness of the medical facility, pool maintenance, food storage and cleaning procedures.

For each violation the CDC’s inspection team gave, they also provided a suggested solution to the problem.

On one example, the CDC noted, “On several occasions, up to six bathers were noted in each whirlpool. Each whirlpool is designed to have a maximum bather load of 4 persons.” The CDC noted that this is to “ensure the maximum passenger bather load number is not exceeded, so the proper halogen and pH values are not adversely affected.”

The agency also noted issues with potable water lines serving the medical facility, trash room, engine room and select guest cabin areas.

Food preparation was also lacking, as some freezers and coolers did not keep things at the proper temperature or were out of service.

Sanitation procedures by the crew were also lacking.

In total, “Margaritaville at Sea Paradise” scored an 83 on the CDC inspection. Any score below an 85 is considered “unsatisfactory,” according to the agency.

Now, the cruise liner has to implement as many health and safety options as possible before the CDC does another surprise inspection.

Some cruise prices are about to get a little more clear.

Cruise lines love to hype their value. But the low prices most dangle don’t tell the full story - for now. Soon, some of the country’s largest lines will better reflect reality.

Starting July 1, operators including Royal Caribbean International, Carnival Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises and Princess Cruises will include the cost of port expenses, taxes and other fees in the price that potential passengers see. The additional charges can tack on more than $100 to the fare, or even double the cheapest base price on some short itineraries.

Subscribe to The Post Most newsletter for the most important and interesting stories from The Washington Post.

The changes kick in when California’s “Honest Pricing Law” goes into effect, restricting companies that do business in the state from advertising a price that is lower than what a consumer will ultimately have to pay.

“While this is a California state law, we are making this change nationwide to ensure our advertised pricing is consistent no matter where guests shop for our cruises,” Carnival Corp. spokeswoman Jody Venturoni said in a statement. Other Carnival brands include Princess, Holland America Line and Cunard. Venturoni said the total advertised price would include the mandatory extras that have previously been “itemized separately for consumer awareness.”

In a list of frequently asked questions about changes to advertised pricing, Royal Caribbean Group said that it would not treat California different from the rest of the country, which “could have created confusion and introduced unnecessary complexity.”

Norwegian Cruise Line, another major player in the market, said it was still evaluating how it would implement changes in response to the new law. The industry group Cruise Lines International Association did not respond to a request for comment. Disney Cruise Line and some luxury operators already include the cost of taxes, fees and other charges in their upfront price.

For now, cruise lines like Carnival and Royal Caribbean promote bargain sailings, such as a seven-night Western Caribbean cruise “starting at” an average of $437 per person. But that number does not reflect the nearly $164 more that’s required for taxes, fees and port expenses and displayed in smaller print. A four-day Mexico cruise from Long Beach, Calif., shows the cheapest cabin for $234 - but the additional charges are an additional $240.

“The current ‘drip pricing’ technique where you show a low price and then tack on a lot of the extra fees later is a great attention disrupter but very misleading,” Doug Parker, founder of the podcast and news site Cruise Radio, said in an email.

Gratuities are also extra for most mainstream cruise lines, but tips will not need to be advertised up front. Cruise lines also offer optional drink or dining packages, shore excursions, and other add-ons that would increase the cost of a trip.

Parker said the cost of a seemingly inexpensive cruise can balloon with taxes, depending on the itinerary. He said the new policy will give families “a better idea on what the vacation will actually cost.”

California’s law comes amid a larger focus on “junk fees” from the Biden administration, which has targeted what it calls deceptive pricing from airlines, hotels, live-event companies, banks, cable providers and other industries.

Major cruise companies said that while they would show the cost differently, actual prices would not change.

“Fortunately, despite how our prices will now be advertised, the total price guests pay today for our cruises has not changed - guests still get the same great value and affordable prices we’ve always provided,” Venturoni said in her statement.
