Get Closer to Earning Delta Status When You Book a Hotel or Rental Car for a Limited Time

Score 1 Medallion Qualification Dollar (MQD) per $1 spent plus miles when you book hotels, vacation rentals, and car rentals.

Having elite status can get you the finer things in life, and Delta’s latest promotion may just put you in reach.

“For a limited time, earn $1 Medallion Qualification Dollar (MQD) per $1 spent plus miles when you book hotels, vacation rentals, and car rentals with Delta through June 24, 2024," the airline shared .

To score the rewards, travelers can log on to the Delta Travel Extras portal with their Delta SkyMiles number to book hotels, vacation homes, and rental cars. As every dollar spent accrues one Medallion Qualification Dollar (MQD), fliers can quickly earn their way to Delta elite status in other ways besides flying.

Delta’s Medallion Qualification Dollars (MQD) are different from SkyMiles, the latter of which are redeemable for free flights. The following MQD thresholds are required to qualify for Delta Medallion status:

• Silver Medallion - $6,000 MQDs
• Gold Medallion - $12,000 MQDs
• Platinum Medallion - $18,000 MQDs
• Diamond Medallion - $35,000 MQDs

Travelers typically earn 1 MQD per $1 spent on flights operated by Delta or partner airlines. Once a certain threshold is achieved, elite status will be granted to the member for the remainder of the year — and the entire year thereafter. 

Spending $35,000 on Delta flights to earn top-tier Diamond status might be out of reach for most travelers. However, the opportunity to earn elite points from hotels and rental cars for a limited time may help them reach that next tier of elite status. 

Earning MQDs from a few of Delta’s personal and business credit cards, which come with a $2,500 MQD headstart for the qualification year, is also possible. Delta Platinum cardholders can earn 1 MQD per $20 spent on purchases, while Delta Reserve cardholders can earn 1 MQD per $10 spent.

My friend and his wife used their SkyMiles to book their honeymoon rental car for our honeymoon. When they arrived at the rental car office, they were surprised to find out that the only car available was a bright pink convertible. They had a great time around the island with the top down, turning heads everywhere they went with their skymiles rental.

If you book a package deal with Delta, you can use SkyMiles to pay for car rentals. Therefore, you might use your Delta miles to book a trip that includes flights, hotels, and a rental vehicle. Prior to selecting a rental car as an add-on, you must select your lodging and travel arrangements.

How Do I Convert Delta SkyMiles to Dollars?

Flying will earn you miles and elite status credit because each Delta mile is worth approximately one cent (~varies between about 1 cent and 1.2 cents) and the tickets are treated as cash. Partial payments are accepted when redeeming your Delta rewards in increments of 5,000 miles. Therefore, 5,000 miles equal $50, 10,000 miles equal $100, etc.

Can I Use My Spouse’s Delta SkyMIles?

You can use your spouse’s Delta SkyMiles, sort of. Note that m embership numbers are not transferable. Per your Delta SkyMiles account, only one enrollee is allowed per number. Members are only allowed to have and use one active SkyMiles account. 

You can, however, log in as your spouse and purchase tickets/use their SkyMiles. SkyMiles are simply not transferable from one account to another.

Are Delta SkyMiles Refundable?

Most airlines, including Delta, do not impose a cancellation fee when canceling a flight that was booked using miles. Restoring your miles is typically cost-free, and you’ll typically even get a refund for the taxes and fees you paid.

Delta SkyMiles are also redeemable to save money on an upcoming flight. To save $50 on your ticket, you can use SkyMiles in increments of 5,000 miles. Therefore, you could use 10,000 miles to purchase a $200 ticket while also paying $100 in cash.

Yes, you CAN use your Delta SkyMiles to pay for a rental car, and so much more. You can transform your miles into just about anything you want, including a premium beverage at Delta Sky Club, rental cars with Delta partners, and seat upgrades on next journey.

Earn MQDs on hotel stays and rental cars when you book through Delta by the end of June

Editor's Note

Delta Air Lines is back with its Stays and Cars promotion this year, offering Delta SkyMiles members another path to earn Medallion Qualification Dollars toward elite status .

Specifically, you'll earn 1 MQD per base dollar spent on hotel bookings and car rental reservations booked May 13-June 24 through the Travel Extras portal for travel completed by Sept. 8.

Here are the details.

Earn MQDs on hotels

During this promotion, you'll earn 1 MQD per dollar spent on hotel stays booked through Delta's travel portal. This is in addition to the 2 redeemable SkyMiles you ordinarily earn for every dollar spent at most hotels.

The terms of the promotion state that you can only earn on the base cost of the hotel room before taxes and fees are charged at the time of booking.

For example, here's what you could earn for a two-night stay in June at the 1 Hotel in West Hollywood:

• 1,795 SkyMiles (worth $20.64 based on TPG's valuations )

Earn MQDs on rental cars

Additionally, you'll earn 1 MQD per dollar spent on the base car rental rate for every completed rental booking.

You will not earn MQDs on charges like taxes, one-way rental fees, fuel services or tolls.

For example, here's what you'd earn on a weeklong rental next week at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK):

• 160 SkyMiles (worth about $1.84 based on TPG's valuations)

Note that elite members earn more miles with Hertz , though this won't affect how many MQDs you earn.

As a Delta frequent flyer, you'll earn:

• 4 miles per dollar spent as a basic member
• 5 miles per dollar spent as a Silver Medallion
• 6 miles per dollar spent as a Gold Medallion
• 7 miles per dollar spent as a Platinum Medallion
• 8 miles per dollar spent as a Diamond Medallion

For Dollar and Thrifty reservations, all SkyMiles members earn 4 miles per dollar; members earn 2 miles per dollar for all Alamo, Enterprise , National, Avis , Budget and Payless reservations.

Important terms

Read the full terms and conditions of this promotion here . One of the most important things to note is that you can only earn MQDs if your name appears on the credit card you pay with. Delta will not credit MQDs if the first and last names on the credit card do not match the information on the SkyMiles account.

After you complete your travel, it can take up to eight weeks to receive the MQDs.

Additionally, those with a Delta cobranded card can earn up to $100 or up to $250 Delta Stays statement credits annually when they use the card to purchase prepaid hotels or vacation rentals through Delta Stays. Plus, prepaid Delta Stays reservations now qualify as Delta purchases on cobranded cards.

Delta Platinum and Reserve cardholders, including those with the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card or the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card , will earn 3 miles per dollar spent. Delta Gold cardmembers, including those with the Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card , will earn 2 miles per dollar spent.

Bottom line

This is another way to earn Delta status without flying . Delta appears to be sending emails to SkyMiles members in batches with this promotion.

By earning MQDs through non-flight activities outside one of the airline's cobranded credit cards, this promotion sets a new precedent for Medallion status. We hope to see more ways to earn MQDs like this one in the future.

Transportation

Ground transportation.

Travelers are to use the most economical and effective means of ground transportation both from the standpoint of time and the cost for car rental, U of I Motor Pool, Taxi, Shuttles and/or Mileage. Mileage rates for personal vehicles are established by the State of Idaho. Fuel cannot be purchased on a U of I Purchasing Card or reimbursed for personal vehicles while claiming mileage.

Rental Car Information

Important Notice! Employees are required to utilize U of I Rental Car Agreements. If the traveler cannot rent through a state contract, they should consult with U of I Risk Department.

Renting, on behalf of the University, a vehicle larger than a standard sized car requires a business justification. Prior approval along with the justification is required at the time of submitting the Pre-Approval authorization reports. Additional products or services added to rental agreements will not be reimbursed. This includes insurance, roadside assistance and/or charges for GPS.  

The cost of vehicle insurance will not be paid or reimbursed to university employees for automobile rentals in the United States. However, an exception is made for insurance purchases for large trucks and moving vans. Vehicle insurance should always be purchased for rentals by university employees in foreign countries.
