2016 Etape du Tour route analysis - Megève to Morzine

The route starts with a slight downhill section for about 6.5km, followed by a small climb of about 600 metres to get the legs warmed up and then a small descent into the village of Flumet, which stands at 936 metres, after 9.5km. Flumet only has a population of 900 people and is a tiny village but is well known as a crossroads to three big climbs often used by the Tour de France or the Dauphiné (the other two passes for trivia fans are the Col des Saisies and the Cormet de Roselend). The one Etape riders will be attempting is the climb up the Col des Aravis, a 551 metre climb out of Flumet. The Aravis pass has been used frequently by the Tour - this is the 40th time - and is famous for its steep sections.

COL DES ARAVIS

From the top of the Col des Aravis there is a 12km descent down to Le Grand-Bornand with a 587 metre vertical drop. The road is surprisingly wide and with a decent surface so I would expect this to be a fun descent at speed, especially as it is not highly technical. I would expect the first feed station of the day to be located in Le Grand-Bornand, a pretty skiing village that dates back to at least the 16th century. Trivia fans will be pleased to know the locals are called Bornandins.

COL DE LA COLOMBIERE

From here there is a 11.7km climb up the Col de la Colombière. This is a nice climb until the final kilometre. The first 10.7km go at an average gradient of 5.9%, slowly ramping up to 7.5% from 8.7km to 10.7km but the final kilometre is at 9% and is a bit of a slog. It is a very pretty route through Alpine pastures, followed by some lovely rockfaces towards the top. At the summit there will definitely be a feed station as there is a big car park and a restaurant (useful to know about for toilet facilities if you want something a bit better than the disgusting portable loos that are normally on offer). At this stage you will have done 45.5km of the ride and should still be enjoying it!

Off the top of the Colombière you descend for 15.5km, with a vertical drop of 1,081 metres, to Scionzier. The first 7.5km of the descent is steep and quite technical, followed by a lovely, gentle flowing run of 10km into the village. You will need to be careful on the top section, although thanks to the Tour coming through it will have been resurfaced and the tarmac will be clean; it's a tricky descent when it is not!

From Scionzier there is a 17km run along the valley to Mieussy with 68 metres of ascending which should give riders a good chance to get into a bunch and share some work while also having something of a rest before the third climb of the day. I'd expect there to be some sort of stop at Mieussy, possibly just a place to fill bottles and maybe some very basic food such as bananas. The ride should be very pretty as the whole area is a protected nature reserve. Mieussy is just beyond the half way point of the Etape and is also the place where paragliding was invented in 1978.

COL DE LA RAMAZ

The third climb of the day is the Col de la Ramaz which sees Etape riders climb 1,014 metres over 15.5km to the 1,619 metres summit. It has an average of 6.1% slope but that doesn't really tell the full story. The initial 6km goes at roughly 5%, followed by one kilometre of flat, before another kilometre at 8% and then two kilometres at a leg sapping 10.4%. After that you have a kilometre at 8.6%, then two kilometres at around 6.5%. The good news is that the final 500 metres of the climb is almost totally flat. For most Etape riders this will be a tough climb in the heat of the day - you will need to take this steadily and ensure that you are drinking plenty of water because if it is a hot day (and it very often is at this time of year) then the Ramaz will take a lot of energy out of you. For an average Etape rider the total climb is probably around 75 minutes and you should not think of this simply as the warm up to the Col de Joux Plane. The scenery is beautiful - plenty of hairpin bends at the start of the climb, followed by Alpine pastures and then the snow tunnels on the upper reaches. The surface will have been replaced for the Tour, removing one of the main complaints about the ride currently.

Off the top of the Ramaz (we think there will be a feed station at the top but it is possible ASO will decide there is not enough space for anything other than a water station) there is a nice long descent of 16km with a vertical drop of 960 metres. At the top it is a quite narrow road and you will need to be careful if you are surrounded by other riders; fortunately by this stage of an Etape the groups have usually sorted themselves out and you should be riding with people roughly the same speed as you. Towards the bottom of the descent as you get nearer Taninges the road gets wider and it should be a rapid and enjoyable ride. The town itself is not unpretty - it has Roman origins - and we expect there to be a feed station somewhere on the outskirts of the 3,000 population location.

From Taninges there is then a 13km drag along to Samoëns. We imagine you will be routed along the D907, which is mildly uphill (just 78 metres ascent over 13km) but will probably feel like somewhat hard work in the midday sun. You will ideally want to get yourself into a group on this section.

Samoëns is a pretty town, famed for its stonemasonry which were supplied by the numerous limestone quarries in the area. The town is dominated by a pretty (traffic free) square with a huge lime tree and nearby is an Alpine botanical garden. If you want to get your family to come and support you then Samoëns would be an excellent base, especially as it has a reputation for excellent Savoyard food.

COL DE JOUX PLANE

To be totally honest, we were quite surprised to see this stage chosen because of the toughness of the Col de Joux Plan. At 11.6km long with an average slope of 8.5% it is unrelenting. And at the end of a long ride it will be challenging for even the most race fit rider. If you haven't trained enough this will be a climb that finds you out. It starts with about 750 metres at 8.5%, followed by a 12% ramp for 300 metres, followed by a short section at 5% and then two kilometres at 8.5%. A short 'break' of 500 metres at 5% allows a little recovery but then you have 2km at 7%, 600 metres at 10.8% and then follows the last 5km at an average of just over 9% along exposed slopes with absolutely no shelter. Most people who have ridden this will admit that while it is not one of the 'iconic' climbs, the Joux Plane is one of the toughest in the northern Alps. Pantani ascended this climb in 33 minutes - if you manage to do this in double that time then 'chapeau' to you! Personally I rate this as a harder climb than Alpe d'Huez.

From the Ranfolly down to Morzine it should be pure joy and relief but you do need to be wary. The 11km descent is at an average of 6.5% with a maximum slope of 11.1% and while it is steep and technical at the top it is also fun. However when you are tired after a long day riding it is something that will test your reflexes and you should not relax and think this is just the final run in to the finish line. There are plenty of tight hairpin bends with steep slopes to keep you occupied. There is a small ascent on the ride into the centre of Morzine to tackle in the final kilometre but if you have got this far the adrenaline will keep you going and the thought of a refreshing beer (or about 16 hours in bed) should take your mind off the pain.

Gerry Patterson of 44|5 Cycling Tours - one of our recommended tour operators for the Etape - told us after the route was announced: "I'm really looking forward to having the tour in this region. It's outstandingly lovely. The route looks fantastic."

Our feeling is that this is a really proper Etape and one that will test most riders, some to the limit. After a few years in which the ASO seem to have gone a bit easy on Etape riders, this is definitely not the case in 2016. Good luck to all those who are riding and let us know how it goes...

Tour de France 2016 Route stage 20: Megève – Morzine

After welcoming the riders in the climbing time trial of stage 19, Mégève now serves as a departure place. On rolling roads the pack sets sail for the foot of the first climb of the day. Col des Aravis is crested with 21 kilometres done after a 6.7 kilometres climb at 7%. A nice way to warm-up.

While climbing up the Col de la Colombière the riders can take comfort in the fact they tackle the pass from the easiest side – which is from Le Grand-Bornand, thus averaging almost 6% in 11.7 kilometres. Following a long and sometimes steep descent drop the riders navigate a false flat in the valley until they arrive at the foot of Col de la Ramaz. At slightly over 7% the La Ramaz certainly is doable. It is the length – 13,9 kilometre – and irregularity making it a tough climb. At 11.5%, the tenth kilometre is steepest only to be followed by a false flat 1 kilometre further up the montain.

For dessert we have the Col de Joux-Plane, an 11.6 kilometres at 8.5%. Half of the climb is at grades at over 9%, while the steepest kilometre – once again the tenth – is at 10.5%.

After cresting comes a gentle drop in 2 kilometres, a short ascent at 2.9% (to Col du Ranfolly), and then the riders plunge down to Morzine in an 8 kilometres drop at 8.4%. In Morzine itself the section to the finish line is a few hundred metres and goes up at around 3%.

In the past, household names such as Pantani, Virenque (2x) and Sastre were celebrated as the victor in Morzine. Don’t be surprised if another big name joins those men after the last mountain stage in the 2016 Tour de France.

The first three riders on the line take time bonuses at 10, 6 and 4 seconds.

11,158 cyclists complete this year’s Etape in Morzine

They came and they conquered… Despite temperatures close to 40 degrees, 11,158 cyclists completed this year’s Etape du Tour which ended in Morzine.

Almost 16 thousand people entered this year’s Etape du Tour, one of the world’s most famous amateur cycling races. The 122km race from Megeve to Morzine allows people like you and me to ride in the footsteps of our cycling heroes just weeks before the Tour de France attempts the same route.

It was unbearably hot, hugely busy, at times completely petrifying but all in all one of the best days of my life. 11,158 riders crossed the finish line after a race that saw us battle temperatures of almost 40 degrees.

It’s safe to say that the Etape du Tour is a massive event. Even collecting your bib is a day out in itself. An entire village was created in the mountains above Megeve to welcome the thousands of people who had signed up. There was disappointment in the weeks before the event as the route was changed due to safety concerns on the Col de la Ramaz. However this didn’t seem to dampen spirits as we neared the race start.

On race day itself we were segregated into pens according to our numbers at the start line in Megeve. People started arriving in their droves as early as 04:00 in the morning on Sunday. The first riders set off at around 07:00 with the last of us between 08:30 and 09:00. The nerves were palpable but the music, energy and enthusiasm of the supporters who had turned out to cheer us on helped to ease us towards the start line. The race began with a gentle descent from Megeve to Flumet, which allowed the pack to spread out a bit, but it was still pretty challenging to navigate your way around so many other people.

The first climb of the day took us over the Col des Aravis. It’s a level 2 pass lasting about 12km with an average gradient of 5 percent. This is when it became clear we were going to be facing a very hot day indeed. However the atmosphere continued to be lively, energised and fun with riders from around the world talking to each other, supporting each other and most importantly thoroughly enjoying the event. There were regular cries of “left” or “a gauche” as people tried to overtake and “moto” every time a support bike wanted to pass. From here we descended down into La Clusaz and the first of 3 food stations. The route then took us to Le Grand-Bornand and the base of the Col de la Columbiere where the temperature began to rise.

One of the best parts of the day was the hundreds of people who lined the streets from Megeve all the way to Morzine to cheer the riders on. From the very start to the very end there was a person pretty much every 5 metres which helped keep us motivated to reach the end. A massive thanks to all of these people! I doubt we could have done it without you. Only 5 percent of the riders who took part were women and this was recognised with the consistent cheers of “Allez fille! Allez!” (go girl go!) all along the way!

From the top of the Col de la Colombière there is a huge descent all the way down to Sconzier and Cluses. This was perhaps one of the most difficult parts of the day and unfortunately the hot-spot for accidents. Police lined the road to slow riders down after a number of cyclists lost control on the bends. It was a challenge to ride down safely with so many people tackling the descent at different speeds. However, it was incredibly well supported with each incident being seen to speedily and efficiently.

After this the ride heads to Mieussy and the base of the Col de la Ramaz, which sadly had to be eliminated from this year’s Etape. It may however still feature in the Tour de France if officials can get it ready in time. It was then a long flat ride to Taninges and on to Samoens and the base of the Col de Joux Plane. Most riders reached this point at lunch time so really when the temperatures were at their highest.

The Joux Plane is relentless. It’s a climb of around 12km but with an average gradient of 9 percent. This is when I began to realise the true enormity of what we were doing. People struggled with the heat and the intensity of the climb, many stopping to walk, take shelter in the shade or recover before attempting again to reach the top. Again, the support of local people and the organisers was amazing. Many people came out from local houses and farms to throw cold water on to the backs of those riders who wanted it and the inspirational signs along the roadside gave you an extra bit of incentive. One even made me smile with 2 kilometres to go… “Even Froomey’s legs are hurting at this point”. Riders were also encouraging each other, which, at this point, really made the difference.

Sadly, after months of training, not everybody made it to the top of the Joux Plane. The heat got too much, meaning only 11,158 of the near 16,000 finished the race. For those who did reach the top it was a 8km descent into Morzine and to the finish line at the Palais des Sports in the centre of town. The last 200 metres was something quite special. People lined the edge of the last stretch cheering on friends and family and there was an amazing party atmosphere at the finish line. The winner of this year’s race was Tao Quemere who completed the race in a mere 3 hours and 33 minutes. The oldest to take part and complete the race, from what we could hear over the tanoy, was an 80-year-old man.

As I sit here writing this, a day after the race (with heavy legs), I have to say - I had expected the race to be tough but it was far tougher than I had ever imagined. It was amazing to ride with so many like-minded people in one of the most beautiful places in the world. Everyone was there to achieve one thing: to conquer the Etape du Tour. And whether you finished or not, that’s exactly what we did!

La 20e étape et avant-dernière du Tour de France 2016 reliera Megève à Morzine, en Haute-Savoie, le samedi 23 juillet. Les coureurs partiront à 12h55 de Megève pour une arrivée prévue vers 16h49 à Morzine.

La 20e étape du Tour de France 2016, samedi 23 juillet, sera aussi l'avant-dernière et surtout celle où tout pourra basculer. Le classement général risque d'être chamboulé dans cette dernière épreuve en haute-montagne, avant l'arrivée sur les Champs-Élysées, le lendemain, dimanche.

Pendant 146,5 kilomètres, les coureurs cyclistes enchaîneront des difficultés hors-norme, pour ce que Christian Prudhomme, le directeur du tour, qualifie de " grande finale des grimpeurs, peut-être celle du Maillot Jaune ". L'étape ira crescendo dans l'effort. Elle commencera par l’ascension du col des Aravis (cat. 2, montée de 6,7 km à 7%), puis celui de la Colombière (cat.1, montée de 11,7 km à 5,8%). Il faudra ensuite tenir les ascensions jusqu'au col de la Ramaz (cat. 1, montée de 13,9 km à 7,1%), puis celui de Joux Plane (HC, montée de 11,6 km à 8,5%) . C'est ensuite dans une descente longue de 12 km que pourrait se jouer le Tour. "Une première !" se réjouit Christian Prudhomme.

À noter que l'Étape du Tour entre Megève et Morzine vient d'être modifiée. Cet événement propose aux amateurs de vélo de rouler dans les mêmes conditions et sur le même parcours que les coureurs du Tour de France cyclistes. Cet avant-goût de la 20e étape aura lieu le 10 juillet prochain et le col de la Ramaz en a été supprimé car une partie du parcours était menacée par la chute de rochers au niveau de la descente du col. Le parcours  modifié  fait 122 km et 2.873 m de dénivelé. Pour la course professionnelle, les organisateurs du Tour de France prendront leur décision le 22 juillet au plus tard, en fonction de l'évolution de la situation.

Au départ et à l'arrivée

• Le village-départ sera installé place du marché et ouvre ses portes à 10h00.
• La caravane publicitaire sera stationnée sur les parkings du Jaillet et du chemin des Ânes. Elle passera sur la ligne de départ de 10h55 à 11h25
• Les coureurs se rassembleront plate-forme plaine de l’Arly, à Megève, à partir de 11h45 à 12h45. Puis le départ fictif sera donné à 12h55, par route du Palais des Sports, D1212. Le peloton prendra le départ réel à 13h00, sur la D1212.
• L'arrivée se fera place de l'Office du Tourisme, à l'extrémité d'une ligne droite finale de 50 mètres.

Ils sont 100 à avoir été sélectionnés pour porter la flamme olympique dans l'Yonne le 11 juillet. Ils sont sportifs, impliqués dans le monde associatif ou pour faire rayonner le département. Parmi eux une viticultrice très attachée à sa région, Églantine Borgnat.

Etape du Tour 2016 – Megève to Morzine

Col des Aravis – 11.3km 4.8% 600m

After a gentle warm up from Flumet the road actually drops back down slightly before heading along the flat (3km in total) and only then does the climb really gets going again. The final 6.8km average 6.7% with a few short sections of 8%.

Col de la Colombière – 11.6km 5.8% 669m

The less fearsome side of the Col de la Colombière tends to stay in the 6-7.5% bracket with a few, short, flatter sections bringing down the average gradient. There is a sting in the tail with the final 400m going above 9% which will give your legs a taset of what is to come on the remaining two climbs.

Col de la Ramaz – 13.7km 7% 974m

Now things are about to get serious. After the first ramp the road flattens until you reach the small village of Messy. Make sure you take a glance over to the right at the small gap in the cliffs and you will see what is in store for you . From here until you’ve reached the top of that cliff the road just gets steeper and steeper. Fortunately the road takes a safe route across the top section of the cliff by means of a tunnel but this also marks the steepest section of the climb at over 12% ( some claim 14% ). Unfortunately the climb continues for another 4km after exiting the tunnel with some 10% slopes to finish off.

Col de Joux Plane – 11.6km 8% 980m

The tunnel on the Ramaz will most likely be doubling up as a very effective pain cave for many riders but you can bet what is going through most of their minds will be the steeper slopes that still await them on the Joux Plane.  The scene, in 2006, of Floyd Landis’ remarkable TDF comeback but more recently featured in the 2012 Critérium du Dauphiné with a 22 year old Nairo Quintana managing to only just pull away from a strong Team Sky and yellow jerseyed Bradley Wiggins. The gradient never relents but the numerous 12% ramps sap the energy and keep you from being able to find a good rhythm. The final 5km just goes on and on, never really changing from 9% with the summit appearing tantalisingly close but never seeming to get any nearer.

Take care on the descent to Morzine. The road is, at the time of writing, still closed due to a landslide but easily passable by bike. This is the descent where Sean Kelly achieved his fastest ever speed of 121km/h but probably best to not attempt to emulate that. Great fun but fairly technical with a number of areas of poor road surface.

L’Etape du Tour 2016

What an exciting time of year for cyclists!

Not only is it summer for the grizzled, cold Melbournites; it is the start of indoor ergo season for our northern hemisphere readers…woooot! (can I get a little woot-woot? No? Anyone?)

But let's have a quick look at the Etape course.

The Course:  Megeve to Morzine

I love the area. The Megeve-Flumet-St Gervais de Bains area is so very gorgeous.

It's one of my favourite areas in the Alps.

The only thing I don't like is their undercooked hamburgers, despite asking for them bien, bien, tres bien cuis!

The course proper is hard, without being outrageous. There's only around 3500m of climbing which isn't an incredible amount but provides enough to be of interest. The day starts at 1050m which eliminates around 500-700m of climbing.

There's a downhill finish which is interesting as typically riders spend the final kilometers in a deep trough of pain as they scramble up a steep and seemingly relentless climb, often times with an unrelenting Gallic sun beating on their backs.

But, what's this? Something seems amiss with the 2016 Etape course.

What's glaring to me is the lack of a storied Alpine climb, like a Tourmalet or Arcalis (on the menu in the Pyrenees in 2015). On that, I feel a 2016 TDF Pyreneean stage might have been more epic, however it's understandable that they’ve chosen the Alps given they alternate between the two.

However, there's no escaping the fact that the chosen stage will be gloriously beautiful (weather permitting).

I actually (and shockingly) have not climbed any of these except climbing into MOrzine Avoriaz. But I have driven up and down them a few times whilst touring the areas or transiting to Chamonix and the High Alpes.

They're certainly not easy but are not super-difficult. But, as I always say, they're only as hard as you make them. If it;s all too easy, drop down a cog and slam it.

But actually, some of these climbs are pretty tough. It might be an indication that I have lost the plot slightly when I consider 1600m climbs to be piddling little things.

The first two climbs are rather inconsequential as you start at a high altitude and stay there for half the day.

• Col des Aravis: only 500m of ascent.
• Col de la Colombiere: only 700m ascent (start at 900m) – the other side is longer and harder.
• Col de la Ramaz: 13.9km at 7.1%.
• Col de Joux Plane: 11.6km at 8.5% (yowsers).

Registration is via selected tour operators or on the L'Etape/ASO website.

Race entry-only from the ASO is now sold out.

Entries this year have gone up an eyebrow-raising 33% from 75EU to 100EU.

I'll be honest with you Dear Reader: I feel as though the ASO are squeezing the punters here a bit.

In the past, the 75EU got you entry and a schwag bag including backpack, water bottle and cool tshirt.

However, it sounds like the 100EU gets you entry and that is it. You have to BUY the water bottle.

Why do I say that?

Well from next year, the ASO has introduced an eye-watering 1200EU package that makes note of the inclusion of a water bottle.

I have to say, I'd be shocked if the swag bag has been withdrawn from the base entry.

I'd be equally shocked if the 1200EU package didn't have a tshirt!

Anyway, what does the package get you:

• Transport from your point of arrival (train station or airport) to L’Etape du Tour village.
• Personalised race number distribution and a welcome gift. [Probably a God-awful French dried sausage or some-such.]
• Consultation with an osteopath before the event.
• Overnight accommodation from 9th to 10th July close to the start line, in a single room (3 or 4-star hotel), with a special “Tour de France” dinner.
• Overnight accommodation from 10th to 11th July in a single room (3 or 4-star hotel) close to the finish line.
• Consultation with an osteopath/massage after the event.
• Transport from your accommodation to your point of departure (train station or airport).

Would it be fair to say, compared to the Tourmalet, Ventoux or Galibier, they are rather inconsequential?

Hi Tim, I’ve descended Avoriaz through Flumet, ascended Colombier from Grand Bornan, ascended Ramaz, ascended Joux Plane, and descended into Morzine, albeit all on different days. And, i have to say, i think you’re under estimating just how knackered folks will be when they hit Avoriaz. Ramaz + Joux Plane will knock the stuffing out of most people, me included (yes, I’m signed up :-), and my main fear is the crashes there will be on the road down into Morzine as exhausted riders overcook it on the pretty technical descent. But, if at the end I think to myself, damn, I feel like riding back up to Avoriaz just to get some more miles in, I’ll be sure to drop you a “you were right and I was wrong” note before I head off! 🙂 🙂 cheers, m

You’re probably right. Maybe I just am a bit cynical, or my sense of “hard is warped.” I did the Gold Coast Three Peaks (235k/4500m) with no training in about 9 hrs so anything less than something that epic and I think “meh”.

I also ride in the hills a lot, so my sense of “hard” might be a bit out.

This does a disservice the Etape somewhat, and especially (as I pointed out) the extreme prettiness of the area.

I agree, though, most people will find it hard, ESPECIALLY without doing proper Etape training .

Hi Tim Love your emails. I have signed up for next year’s etape (my 3rd) with a bunch of mates and as a non typically built cyclist (200cm 100+kg) I can tell you there is no such thing as an “easy” etape. I live in London so am driving down to do the etape. Actually this etape will be covering quite a lot of old ground. Over the past 3 years since I started tackling the big climbs, I have been using Morzine as a bit of a training ground making a trip out there 2 weeks before my “main events” (Marmotte, Etape x 2, and Maratona). They have an event called the Morzine Haut Chablais Master (around 150km with 3000+m of climbing) which starts and finishes with an HC climb. I can tell you now that any rider who hits the Joux Plane at the end of this ride will get BRUTALISED! It is as relentless as it is steep. And with the heat that gets generated in that part of the world in July, there will be suffering aplenty. I admit that some of the other climbs in next years ride aren’t so challenging, but they are still climbs and will take a lot out of you before the end. Also the descent from Joux Plane is very technical with lots of tight and narrow hairpins. Be warned!

I seem to have stirred up a hornets nest re: Etape 16 and my comments about it being underwhelming!

I had to add a caveat to the post that my view of “hard” is somewhat skewed given the rides I do (that is: a 10-15% climb of 2km isn’t all that imposing in our area).

Obviously there is no such thing as an easy etape but this does seem one of the easier ones of recent times. Ive done the 2010 one which included the Tourmalet in searing heat, the 2011 version which was 130 miles in freezing rain and cold in the Massif Central and last years which included the seemingly interminable Glandon and the final climb to Toussuire which wasn’t easy either. Geraint Thomas would definitely agree.

Having read write ups about the Joux Plane being tough i went and rode it last week and was underwhelmed. It doesnt seem particularly steep in many places and the main thing is the shortness of it. Etapes normally have a 15km + climb. This at 10.6k isnt long at all. It comes at the end of the day so will be tough in that respect i guess depending on the weather.

I think in the past couple of years they have been making the etapes slightly easier – gone are the 100 mile plus ones as they dont want too many people failing to make the cut. It would be nice to see them choose a longer one next year and probably in the Pyrenees too as we’ve had 2 years in the Alps now.

I too did the 2010 Tourmalet Etape (as well as Ventoux 2009 and 2011 Alps) and this is underwhelming. Much like the Australian one, actually.

Etape du Tour 2016 : Megève-Morzine !

Dimanche 10 juillet prochain, la 24e édition de L’Étape du Tour se tiendra sur le tracé de l’étape Megève-Morzine, programmée à la veille de l’arrivée finale pour le peloton de l’élite. Véritable défi de grimpeurs, le millésime 2016 se joue presque sur des terres colombiennes…

À vol d’oiseau, une cinquantaine de kilomètres séparent Megève de Morzine. Une plaisanterie pour n’importe quel pédaleur du dimanche, mais l’habitué de L’Étape du Tour aura très vite compris que le programme est autrement plus corsé. Même avec une distance a priori abordable de 146 km, les milliers de kilomètres parcourus à l’entraînement seront bien justifiés pour affronter les quatre ascensions au programme.

Il n’y aura qu’une vingtaine de kilomètres de plat environ pour souffler entre les ascensions menant au col des Aravis, puis au col de la Colombière, à enchainer avec la montée au col de la Ramaz et enfin au col de Joux Plane. Ce n’est d’ailleurs pas un hasard si ce tracé, conclu par une plongée sur la station de Morzine, a été concocté comme la scène de la grande finale alpestre du Tour 2016, à seulement 24 heures de l’arrivée finale à Paris.

Le défi de l’année pour les 15 000 cyclosportifs attendus sur l’étape se profile comme un pur condensé d’escalade sur deux roues, avec toutes ses variantes. Ils auront une quantité d’images et de souvenirs à mobiliser pour s’accrocher à leur objectif d’atteindre Morzine, où depuis 1975 les grimpeurs de toutes les générations ont brillé, de Van Impe à Andy Schleck en passant par Pantani et Virenque.

Les maillots vintage aux couleurs de la Colombie devraient aussi être de sortie en hommage à Lucho Herrera, vainqueur en compagnie d’Hinault en 1985, tandis qu’en 1988 Fabio Parra termina sur le podium du Tour grâce à son succès à Morzine. En 2012, Quintana y arrachait sur le Critérium du Dauphiné un de ses premiers bouquets de prestige. Alors, une devise à garder à l’esprit : « Joue-la comme Nairo… »

Le cycliste évolue et partage la route avec les autres vélos, mais principalement les véhicules à moteur.

Quelques règles ou simplement, notions, doivent être respectées et appliquées afin d'améliorer la sécurité de chacun.

Le Tour de France est la plus grande épreuve cycliste au monde qui se déroule par étape, sur de longues distances, avec des règles bien définies.
