“Memories worth a lifetime in under 30 min”

The experience of flying by at 40 km/hr while hanging from a metal wire strung between 2 hills overlooking an ancient castle is not something you will easily forget. I am no adventure junkie but I appreciate new experiences and this was one of the great ones. The trainers are very helpful and teach you all you need to know before making the leap... (more)

“A must for all exploring Jodphur”

If you don't experience zip-lining in Jodphur you are seriously missing out on one of the most exciting activities the city has to offer. You will have the opportunity to experience zip-lining from one end of a historic fort to another, an unparalleled experience that you may not have the opportunity to do again!

“An safe adrenaline rush!!!”

A must for all ages. We ranged from 10 to 50 years and all of us had fun. The instructors handled very well the ones who feared and the fool hardy who were ready to jump :-). A very safe and professionally run venture and definitely a visit - especially given the historic location. We were late by 10 minutes because of a delayed flight - yet, they accommodated us... Just listen to those carefully and follow them while into the act. You are definitely going to enjoy the thrill with them. They take care of your safety so do not worry about that. Zip Line - India

Ancient India can be found through a variety of museums and private collections. Larger cities also offer historic buildings, though you may not be able to walk inside some of them. Religious sites can be off limits to explore indoors, but it won’t stop you from enjoying their facades. India is known for The Vedas, which are considered the oldest scriptures relating to Hinduism. It is possible to see some of the Vedas on display. Medieval India has left behind some of the most wondrous buildings like the tower of Brihadeeswarar Temple which is located in Thanjavur.

India is made up of the Himalayas on the eastern border which are perfect for hiking and zip lining. In this area there are often luxury tree house resorts and camp excursions which offer zip lining tours as part of the daily activities.

Zipline Jodhpur | Flying Fox Jodhpur: ADVENTURE IN THE BLUE CITY, INDIA

I step off the small landing and lean back.  I immediately start to glide rapidly forward.  Far below me is a lake ending with stepped walls and beyond that a city built of square blue houses.

I unintentionally spin around and see a magical golden fort rapidly receding, the crenelated battlements I just set off from getting smaller and smaller as I fly away towards the desert hills opposite.

I am in Jodhpur, the famed Blue City of Rajasthan, India.

THE INSPIRATION: Zipline Mehrangarh Fort

Towering above the blue city is Mehrangarh Fort , which dominates the city.  The Jodhpur fort is dramatic, but it’s only one of the incredible things to see in Jodhpur.  I love doing active things when I travel , so as part of my Indian adventure , after learning how to do traditional Indian tie dye in Nawalgarh , and how to do block printing in Jaipur , and my camel safari is Jaisalmer , I was ready for an adventure in Jodhpur.

Enter … the Mehrangarh Fort zipline.  The zip line tour in Jodhpur combines the Jodhpur Blue City and the Jodhpur fort in an amazing experience that is possibly the best zipline in India.

Getting to the zipline: Mehrangarh Fort, Jodhpur

Mehrangarh, a Jodphur “must see”, is actually impossible to miss.  It sits atop a rocky outcrop in the center of Jodhpur, towering over the city, and like most of Rajasthan’s forts, is like something out of a fairy tale.  It is easy enough to walk up to the fort with a reasonable level of fitness.

Starting at the clock tower, we wound our way up the hill through a residential area with some hotels, shops and metal and tie dye workshops, then took the stairs up the main road and continued through the gates to the fort.  The fort is a top-notch museum with real displays and worth taking several hours to visit.

Chokelao Garden

After wandering through the fort, we headed down to Chokelao Garden, at the back end of Mehrangarh.  The lush 18 th Century garden is laid out in squares and has wonderful views of the blue city below.  The office for the zipline where you check in is tucked away in a corner of the garden.

The zipline, Jodhpur (AKA flying fox, Jodhpur)

After getting fitted for our gear, we got instructions on what to do, and had a short test run, before starting the real zipline tour.  There are six ziplines with short 1- to 2-minute walks in between each wire.

Zip 1: Chokelao Challenge (115m/ 377 feet)

The first wire is over Chokelao Garden, so it’s a good way to gain confidence.

Even though I’m not great with heights in general, I actually don’t find flying foxes/ zip lines scary.  You are strapped into a harness and let go and just sail through the air.

The trick is to balance your body back enough to maintain the momentum.  If you don’t, the you can actually stop a few meters from the end.  This happened to Kevin, so he had to rotate around then pull himself hand over hand to the end.

If you have the opposite problem and have lots of momentum, then the gloves you are kitted with can help slow you down at the end.  There is someone to help launch you at one end and someone else to grab you at the other, so it all very easy.

Why is Jodhpur called the Blue City?

Jodhpur, which was founded in 1459, is called the Blue City because most of the houses in Jodhpur’s old city are painted blue. Why are the houses in Jodhpur painted blue?  They are painted blue because the blue paint helps keep the houses cool in the summer heat.

Zipline Jodhpur Flying Fox Jodhpur blue city

The absolute best place to see the view of the blue city is from the Mehrangarh Fort’s battlements around Chokelao Garden, so the start of the zipline and the first and second ziplines are really the best viewpoints in the whole city.

Zip 2: Ranisar Rollercoaster (170m/ 558 feet)

This is where the adventure starts to get real. After the first zipline, there is a short walk on the battlements of the fort, a short climb through a “secret” tunnel, then you launch off the battlements and fly over crenelations, across Ranisar Lake and a valley to the dry hills across from the fort.

It’s not exactly a “roller coaster”, but soaring over the lake to the hills on the other side is pretty awesome – and all over too quickly.

Zipline Jodhpur Flying Fox Jodhpur

Ranisar Lake was built in 1459 after Queen Jasmade Hadi, who was the wife of the founder of Jodhpur, commissioned it as a kind of giant well to keep water for the city.  In fact, the sides have the same graphic stepped sides that classic traditional step wells have.

Zipline Jodhpur Flying Fox Jodhpur Ranisar Lake

Zip 3: Chhota Wallah (70m/ 230 feet)

The third line crosses a deep ravine near the lake.  It is the shortest zipline, but there are great views of Mehrangarh Fort.  We took turns taking photos and videos of each other.

Zipline Jodhpur Flying Fox Jodhpur Mehrangarh Fort

Zip 4: Jai Jodha (270m/ 886 feet)

On the second longest zipline, you fly across the hills into the rocky desert across from the fort, above the blue city.  Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park, a 72-hectare/ 178-acre park that opened in 2011, was created in 2006 to restore the natural ecology of the desert.

Being there hammers home how harsh the desert environment that the city was built in really is.

Zip 5: Rajput’s Revenge (160m/ 525 feet)

Fly across more hills in Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park across with more awesome views of the Jodhpur Fort.

Zip 6: The Magnificent Marwar (300m/ 984 feet)

The best is left to last.  This is a total blast.  We stepped off the edge and glided down and along, over Ranisar and Padamsar Lakes, both dating from the 15th century.  There are more incredible views of the blue city the whole way.

The battlements of the fort got closer and closer until eventually we landed back on one of the fort’s towers.

Zipline Jodhpur Flying Fox Jodhpur last zipline

From there, it is a short walk down the battlements back to the zipline office.

After the zip line

With the zip line finished we headed down through the back gates to the fort into the blue city.  It’s possible, of course to enter the fort this way, too.  The upper residential streets were a bit trashy, but down on the main street, things got livelier with shops, temples and food carts.

The street eventually led back around to the clock tower.

The verdict: Flying fox Jodhpur

This has to be one of the best ziplines in the world because of the location. Flying from the battlements of the fort over the lakes and into the desert hills was a complete blast.

PRACTICAL TIPS: Zipline Jodhpur

The experience: zip line tour jodhpur.

Book the Jodphur fort zipline here .  The flying fox Jodhpur price is available here .  The experience lasts 1-1.5 hours depending on how many people are in the group.  There are six lines, plus the short practice run.

Other things to do in Jodhpur

There are a lot of awesome experiences you can have in Jodhpur.  These will really make your vacation a unique travel experience.

Where is Jodhpur and what is the currency?

Jodhpur is in Rajasthan, India.  The currency is the rupee.

Yo can check the current exchange rate here .

How to get to Jodhpur

Jodhpur has a domestic airport (JDH ) with connecting flights to many cities in India and from there internationally.

Book a flight to Jodhpur here .

It is likely that you will visit other cities in Rajasthan as well.  I traveled from the Golden City of Jaisalmer to Jodhpur by train and from Jodhpur I took a car to the White City Udaipur via the incredible Jain temple at Ranakpur and Kumbhalgarh fort.  Book this transfer here .  If you are traveling in the opposite direction, you book a private transfer to the golden city of Jaisalmer .

The train to/from Jaipur, the Pink City, takes 5 hours 52 minutes on average.

The train to/from Jaisalmer takes 5 hours 25 minutes on the fastest train and 7 hours 30 minutes on the slowest train.

To get to/ from Udaipur, you can take a train between Jodhpur and Rani (2 hours 16 minutes) and a bus between Rani and Udaipur (2 hours 38 minutes) OR take a bus the whole way (4 hours 51 minutes).  The train/ bus gives you an opportunity to talk to Indian people, but a private car is definitely easier and more comfortable.  I liked taking a mix.

Getting around Jodhpur

The easiest way to get around Indian cities is in a tuk tuk, which you can hire easily.  Be sure to ALWAYS agree on a price before you start to avoid any nasty surprises.  If you want to hire a tuk tuk for a whole or half day, ask at your hotel.  We felt very taken care of in India and found everyone very helpful.

Where to stay in Jodhpur

Choosing the best place to stay can be tricky, because we all have different things we love.  I have created a guide to help you choose the best hotel (read it, then come back).

I stayed at Haveli Inn Pal.  This is one of the many heritage hotels in India.  It is a large former merchant’s residence with painted walls, a large courtyard, individual rooms and rooftop terrace where you can dine or have breakfast with amazing views of Mehrangarh Fort.

I love staying in hotels like this, with lots of character.  It is a little shabby around the edges, but was very clean and the staff were incredibly helpful.  Book Haveli Inn Pal here .

Jodhpur Haveli Inn Pal

The closely named Pal Haveli is similar. Book Pal Haveli here .

For a total splurge, live like a Raja at the Umaid Bhawan Palace Hotel.  Seriously, this is the residence of the current Raja!  Part of the palace is the Raja’s home and part is an incredible hotel.  A decadent splurge, but totally worth it! Book Umaid Bhawan Palace here .

Planning and Packing

I use the Internet a lot to plan – and I hope this blog is useful resource for you – but I also always use a guide book to get the big picture and practical things like maps.  Use it as a useful resource than a travel bible so that you don’t miss out on loads of awesome things and places and experiences that aren’t listed in it. Buy the India Lonely Planet here .

If you are just starting to plan your trip, use my Trip Planner to help you.

When you are ready to start booking your trip, use my  Resources Page  to help you find the best flights, tours and hotels.

When you are ready for your trip, check out my Essential Packing List . Whether you are planning to travel to India or need to pick up extra luggage in India, this handy guide to best trolley bags in India will help.

Another book that I love is “ India – Culture Smart!: The Essential Guide to Customs & Culture “.  We had heard so many stories about how overwhelming India was, and how difficult it was to deal with, and how different the culture was, that Kevin ordered this book in order to understand more about Indian culture before we left.

In the end, we were so prepared that we never felt at all overwhelmed while we were there.  In fact, we felt very taken care of throughout India, but understanding the culture helped a lot.  Buy India – Culture Smart!: The Essential Guide to Customs & Culture here.

If you are worried about safety, I have a list of common scams and how to avoid them – knowing about them means you can be aware without being paranoid.

Additional consideration: Travel Insurance

My aim is to not only inspire you to have amazing experiences when you travel, but to also give you the practical information and resources you need to have them.  It is important to be fully prepared when you travel.

In addition to accommodation, planning and flights, you should always have travel insurance, just in case.  I always hope I never need to use it but I get it just in case I do!

Zipline Adventure: 8 Zipline Locations in India

Zipline adventure

Here is a list of zip line locations in India. Zipline adventure sports are available in various locations in India.

Zipline adventure is undoubtedly is a thrilling entertainment. Whenever we ride inside a cable car, we are overjoyed when we look below the valley.

The views below the cables, and ahead of the moving cable car are simply breathtaking.

What is Zipline adventure?

Instead of the metal capsule that is sliding on the cables, imagine yourself hanging on to the cables and sliding from one end to the other end. This is what is ziplining or zip-lining. You can also call it sky-riding.

See this video below that shows people sliding on a zipline.

Who can participate in Zipline adventure?

Before we come to know of the various locations in India where zipline sport is available, we should know who can experience a zipline tour.

Actually, there is no age limit though if you are under 18 years, your parents’ permission is required.

The important eligibility criteria for sliding on a zipline is you should weigh less than 110 kgs. There is a minimum height requirement but I believe the organizers of a zipline activity don’t enforce it very strictly.

Types of locations for zipline adventure:

Well, it has to be between two tall buildings or two mountains. Ziplining used by skiers to go up to the exact skiing spot from the base of a ski resort.

Zipline Adventure Locations in India.

Zipline adventure location india-kikar lodge, punjab.

The zipline here said to be the longest slide in Asia. The distance you slide over the zipline cables is 1.4 km. I suppose you will reach the other end in less than a minute.

That’s all. Your excitement, thrill, and the joy of achievement will last for only a minute.

Nevertheless, if you dare to look below as you slide on the metal ropes, the view below will be stunning.

You may zip past the cables over a forest, or a valley filled with mist, or over a lake.

Kikar located in a place called Nurpur Bedi in Punjab. It is a forest resort owned by a private firm.

The zipline built on the Shivalik Hills of the Himalayan range.

Kikar Forest Resort and Ziplining is located 75 km from Chandigarh. If you are based in New Delhi, the distance to cover to reach Kikar is 300 km.

There are so many zipline tour operator in India. They have a few zipline locations across India.

Zipline Adventure location India-Neemrana Fort, Rajasthan

Neemrana Fort

Wow! I have never seen so many captivating forts in a single location. Rajasthan in India is world-famous for its numerous palaces and forts, all built at beautiful locations.

Invariably, these pink stone forts are built on hilltops.

This paves way for constructing ziplines between two forts or between two hilltops of the Aravalli hill range.

The sliding distance on the cables is just 400 meters.

Neemrana town is located 155 km away from Jaipur . Delhi is almost at an equal distance away.

Zipline location India-Munnar Kerala

I think the adrenaline-pumping ziplining adventure is a recent addition to Munnar’s several adventure sports.

Munnar , a very popular hill station in Kerala situated on the Western Ghats. There is no dearth of two hilltops located adjacently between short distances.

More than one ziplining company operates ziplining sport in Munnar over lush forests and tea estates.

In Munnar, you hang on to the ropes but in a horizontal position instead of vertical position.

The speed of sliding down the metal rope is at a whopping 90km/ph. At a height of over 6000 feet and at such a mind-boggling speed, the zipping will be a memorable experience.

The bird’s eye view of western ghats will never fade away from your memory.

Zipline location India- Manali, Himachal Pradesh

Zipline location Manali’s Solong Valley is suitable for all age groups. The distance of sliding is little more than 500 meters, but at a high alpine altitude in the Himalayas. You can expect to soar high above at a scary altitude of 6000 feet!

Zipline location India- Rishikesh

We have seen the gorgeous flow of Ganges in Rishikesh; it was often shown in movies. With the backdrop of Lakshmanjoola and the foothills of Himalayas, the frothing and murky Ganga fiercely flowing far below, this aerial view is etched in our memories.

Well, we can now really witness such a scene when we go on a zipline tour in Rishikesh. The ziplines are directly above the Ganges at a safe altitude of 200 feet!

We can slide over the rope for a neat 750 meters! That will give ample time for us to drink in all the breathtaking views of the Himalayas, the number of temples, ashrams, the roads below and the Ganges.

I think Rishikesh is an excellent zipline location in India because there are several allied adventure sports there including rappelling and whitewater rafting.

For a stint of zipline adventure action in Rishikesh, you need to go to Shivpuri village nearby. There are two zipline tour operators in Rishikesh.

Zipline location India-Mussoorie

If you have enjoyed your zipline adventure in Rishikesh, then, you can head to Mussoorie, 80 km away via Dehradun.

Wow. Just a six-year-old boy dared to be a sky-rider and he didn’t show any fear at all! Amazing!

The view down for the sky-rider is not so beautiful when compared with the Rishikesh zipline but Mussoorie zipline location is a kids-friendly one.

Zipline Location India- Goa

Among a big range of adventure sports in Goa, the recent addition is zipping adventure. With the big number of tourists to Goa, I think the launch of ziplining is a smart move.

The zipline sky-ride is Goa is located in Dharbandora village. It is 50 km away from Vasco da Gama. Panaji too is at an equal distance away.

The name of the zipline in Goa is Elephant Zip lining.

Zipline location India-Bhopal

This scenic zipline location in India is about an hour of drive from Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh.

As a zipper, you would ride high above a long Kerwa Dam. The scene below is breathtaking. I think zip lines that are built above water bodies such as lakes, rivers, and waterfalls are more exciting than zipping between buildings and forts.

The distance between the two points of the zipline is 1770 feet that you can cover in a minute.

These eight zipline locations in India are the most recommended places to enjoy zipline adventure. I believe more zipline locations are coming up in India.

Zip Line

Rishikesh Bungee Jumping

What is zip line.

zipline tour india

A zip line is made up of a pulley appended to a stainless-steel cable extended between fixed points of different elevations. Also known as ‘zip wire’, ‘flying fox’ and ‘Tyrolean Crossing’, it allows a person, fastened to the moving pulley, to ‘zip’ from the top to the bottom of a cable, propelled by gravity. For gravity alone to propel the user, the zip line must be inclined to a certain degree. Besides their obvious functional value, zip lines have become a popular outdoors activity, located in adventure camps and resorts. In a professionally run recreational set-up, the user is attached to the cable by a harness, which is attached to a trolley. These zip lines are located in deserts, forests, and over rivers and canyons. The ‘flying fox’ is a collective name for zip-line equipment in Australia and New Zealand, but instead of a steel cable, the zip line here consists of a rope. The height of cables varies from 30ft (9m) to as high as 200ft (61m), and can cover distances of over 1500ft (457m). The average speed on a zip line is around 50 km/h and 60 km/h. The world’s longest zip line (1.8km, 1.1mi, from one end to the other), in Nepal, is also the tallest (with a vertical drop of 2000ft, 610m) – and has a top speed of 120 km/h (75 mph) to boot! As a recreational activity, zip lines are popular in the Americas, specifically in the rainforests of Nicaragua and Costa Rica. After the launch of the first ‘canopy tour’ in Costa Rica in the mid-1990s, the activity has grown in popularity across the world – it’s perfect for those seeking a dose or three of adrenaline rush.

History of Zip Line

From early times, zip lines have been used as a means of transportation – of people and goods – especially in remote, mountainous areas, or across rivers, ravines and rainforests. In such places, like China and the Central American rainforests, zip lines were (and still are) the only way to travel from one place to another. In the Australian outback, zip lines were used to transport supplies between settlements. Those climbing mountains also used cables to move between steep points (it is from mountaineering that the term ‘Tyrolean Crossing’ comes from; Tyrol is a state in Austria) – as did wildlife biologists, who wanted to explore and study jungles from a higher perspective (through being perched above the canopy). In his story, ‘The Invisible Man’ (1897), the science-fiction writer H.G. Wells makes mention of something resembling a zip line (though here it was called an ‘inclined strong’) – the protagonist moves from place to place on a cable, without having to set foot on the ground.

Zip Line in India

The story of zip line in India is barely a decade old, but there has been an increase in the number of adventurous folk willing to ‘fly’ through the air. There are a handful of operators offering this thrilling pursuit in India, of which ‘Flying Fox’ is the most reliable. Zip lines are located mainly in the north of the country – in Rajasthan, Punjab and Madhya Pradesh.

Helmet, harness, leather gloves (so that the user can bring himself/herself to a halt)

Best season in India

Save the monsoon months, zip lining is possible throughout the year. The winter months are best for experiencing the unique thrill of this adventure activity.

Zip Line sites in India

There are a couple of sites in Rajasthan – in Neemrana (near Delhi) and Jodhpur (Mehrangarh Fort) – alongside one each in Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh) and Ropar (Punjab).

Zip line is a fun and safe adventure activity, but do check that the operator is well trained in terms of experience, safety and maintenance.

Medical concerns

Anyone above the age of 10, weighing under 115kg (18 stone), and between 4’7” (1.4m) can travel along a zip line – all one has to be is of reasonable fitness and health (a daredevil attitude will come in handy!). Pregnant women, however, are advised against zip lines. And if you have a fear of heights, it’s best that you stay on the ground!

Ecological concerns

Zip lines do little (if any) damage to the environment. They are of a simple design and have been used for many centuries as a means of getting from A to B. But as with all outdoor activities, remember the golden rule: Respect your environment. And strictly no littering!

Learn And Enjoy A New Skill on Family Ski Holidays

Has your skiing tan been permanently pigmented since infancy? Or do you, in fact, struggle to tell your gloves from your goggles? Whether you’re a newcomer looking to learn a new sport or are an experienced skier seeking to refresh their skills, we can find the perfect skiing holiday to suit you.

When it comes to skiing holidays, it is vital to be honest about your previous skiing experiences before beginning to plan the logistics of your trip. Whilst we’d all like to be able to claim a near-Olympian level of skiing ability and a natural aptitude for the sport, there’s no shame in admitting you never got around to learning to ski, or that you haven’t previously taken to it as easily as you might have hoped. Being open about your past experiences of skiing will save you a lot of embarrassment in the long run and will help your whole party to plan a holiday that is both enjoyably challenging and satisfying for all involved, with no nasty surprises along the way!

Skiing As A Family. For families looking to take a skiing holiday together, many winter sports companies offer a variety of different family ski holidays that can be tailored to suit the various requirements or preferences of each family. If you have skied before yourself and feel comfortable leaving the children in the capable hands of a qualified instructor, many resorts offer half-day ski schools. Such schools are usually careful to group students in terms of their ability rather than their age, meaning your child will be simultaneously as safe and as necessarily challenged as is possible, allowing you to take off on your own for a morning of more adventurous skiing than the kids might be capable of. When skiing lessons are over, the family can then re-unite to spend the afternoon skiing together on slopes to suit everyone, or simply relaxing in the ski resort and surrounding area.

Alternatively, if the adults in your party are as new to skiing as the children, you may wish to take skiing lessons all together. In this case, it may be more appropriate and more cost-effective to employ your own private ski instructor. Most ski instructors are happy to take on whole families at a time, adapting their teaching styles to suit the abilities of each individual and choosing slopes and routes accordingly. Children often learn to ski more quickly than adults, so don’t be put off if it’s the kids who are waiting for you to catch up!

Skiing As A Single. In recent years, the travel industry has seen a major increase in demand for singles activity holidays , as single people learn that activity holidays don’t just have to be a family affair. In fact, going on activity holidays alone not only gives you the freedom to choose a holiday to suit your own personal abilities (particularly useful when it comes to skiing), they can also be a great way to meet new people. When signing up for singles skiing holidays, it is again vital to be honest about your abilities to ensure you are placed with a group of like-minded people! Once you get going, skiing can be a great leveller and, as any seasoned skier will confirm, the après-ski can be just as much fun as the skiing itself!

From quick breaks in budget hostels to all-inclusive holidays in luxurious, catered chalets and from structured, supervised ski schools to independent, white-knuckle races down the black slopes, there’s a ski holiday to suit every budget and every ability.

AUTHOR BIO A seasoned skier herself, Annie Black writes regular articles on sports travel for a range of sports and travel websites and blogs. Having spent her childhood on the slopes during various family ski holidays , in recent years, Annie has sought similar thrills on singles activity holidays in destinations across the world.

Devgad Zipline: The longest beach zipline in India

  • Post author: Shraddha
  • Post published: April 7, 2021
  • Post category: Konkan / Maharashtra / shraaa
  • Post comments: 0 Comments

I zoomed over the Devgad beach on the longest zipline in Maharashtra and the only beach zipline in India. This post is about my exhilarating adventure which got over too soon.

This was my first zipline ever. I have never attempted this sport before, but I always wanted to do it. And what better place I could find than this stunning beach. This zipline is very beautiful and much cheaper than any other ziplines in India.

This is my day 13 out of my 21 days  Maharashtra tour .

Devgad zipline

Devgad zipline is 1885 feet long and 280 feet high from sea level. It begins at a cliff near the Devgad Windmills garden and ends at the other end of the beach. Do I even need to say anymore? The view is breathtaking and every minute of the ride is worth it. But it all ends very soon, and that’s my only complaint. I would have loved to have 2 or 3 more rides here, but I was short of time that day.

Quick details

  • Where:  Near Devgad beach windmill garden
  • Cost:  Rs 500/-
  • Safety:  It is very safe and the staff is helpful.
  • Who can do it:  Everyone except people who fear heights. Kids can do it too.
  • Website to make bookings:  Flying Konkan
  • Where to stay: Find out the best Devgad home stay.

The view from the top

Devgad beach zipline - devgad ropeway - devgad home stay

Devgad beach is perhaps the best beach in India for having a zipline. There are cliffs and windmills on the right side and the endless blue Arabian sea on the left. The zipline starts from near the garden on one of these cliffs. Straight at the front, you can spot the Devgad Lighthouse and the ruins of the Devgad fort. Beyond the fort and lighthouse is the sea creek which sparkles equally blue as the Arabian Sea on the left.

I did this zipline in the morning which is the best time for having a ride here. For one thing, there were no tourists on the beach below looking up at me. Yeah, that would have been awkward. And the second is the weather was perfect that morning. The waters were sparkling turquoise blue and the sands were amazingly white. The water was so clean that when I looked down from above I could clearly see the sea bed below.

Who can do this sport?

Devgad beach Zipline is very safe. They have already hosted everyone from kids to older women. Several senior citizens also have already attempted this sport. The zipline is for everyone except for people who fear heights. And their staff is very helpful. They have both male and female employees. Their female staff put the harness and straps on me which was more comfortable.

Flying Konkan

Devgad Zipline - longest zipline in Maharashtra - devgad home stay

Devgad Zipline is managed by an ambitious and adventure-loving family of Joils in the beach town of Devgad. They work under the name  Flying Konkan . I was lucky enough to meet Vaishnavi Joil and experience her amazing hospitality. Vaishnavi also organises corporate and adventure tours around Devgad and Konkan.

Explore the Thrills of Ziplining

A zipline is a cable strung between two points, typically across a valley or over water, that allows people to slide or “zip” from one point to another using a pulley and harness.

Ziplines are often used for adventure activities such as canopy tours, team-building exercises, and thrill-seeking experiences. They can vary in length, height, and speed depending on the location and intended use. Some ziplines are designed for very short and low-speed rides, while others can be quite long and fast, reaching speeds up to 50 miles per hour.

World's longest zipline to open in South Africa

K3 Zipline News.png

After delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the world's longest zipline is finally nearing completion near Caledon in South Africa's Overberg region. The 3.2-kilometre-long attraction, developed by K3 - SA Forest Adventures, will surpass the current record holder in Ras al Khaimah by nearly 400 metres.

Thrill-seekers will soon be able to soar over Overberg's picturesque wheatfields, with panoramic views of mountains and the N2 highway. This unique experience adds a new dimension to Caledon's tourism offerings, which traditionally centred on wildflower trails and the Elgin Railway Market.

Whilst an exact opening date is yet to be announced, K3 is confident the zipline will be operational in July 2024. The project, initially planned for completion in 2022, faced setbacks due to pandemic-related complications.

Adventure enthusiasts are advised to follow K3 - SA Forest Adventures for updates on this record-breaking attraction, set to provide an unparalleled bird's-eye view of the region's stunning landscapes.

Riot-stricken New Caledonia is empty of travellers. Businesses hope it can regain its place as a Pacific tourism jewel

An empty table under a thatched umbrella with an empty beach in the background.

Nestled between banana trees and palms on the outskirts of New Caledonia's capital, Anne Fonua's guesthouse and two tour buses sit empty.

Before civil unrest erupted in the French Pacific territory last month, her diary was filled with bookings from cruise ship passengers and other visitors arriving soon in Nouméa.

"Everything was cancelled," Ms Fonua said.

A woman in a blue top with island patterns and a shell necklace, wearing a frangipani leaf on her ear, in front of a bus.

Blessed with pristine beaches, lagoons and coral reefs, New Caledonia was a jewel in Pacific tourism hoping to grow its share of Australian tourists.

Travel to the archipelago came to a startling halt in May, when violent turmoil broke out over French plans to add thousands of voters who have been in the territory for 10 years to electoral rolls.

It's a reform many fear will dilute the Indigenous Kanak vote in future referendums on independence.

Tourism operators wait in limbo — and in hope of a peaceful solution.

"We need to stay positive," said Gateaway Shore Tours guide Alfred Nauka, whose weeks are usually filled showing Australians and other tourists around New Caledonia.

"However, being here and actually seeing and facing and living through all that's going on since May, definitely doesn't help me in keeping a positive mindset."

An aerial view showing tuquoise and dark blue waters, a pontoon restaurant, and peninsulas and islands in the background.

His business was recovering after COVID border closures, before the deadly unrest began on May 13.

"We have lost the totality of our income since then," Mr Nauka said.

Frederic Ballo of Nouméa Turtle Tour, usually busy with tourists, has seen none for about 50 days.

"We hope and we do everything we can to continue. We're adapting day-by-day," he said.

New Caledonia's business and tourism groups say 41,000 bookings have been cancelled, and the halt has cost several billion francs in turnover.

Pro-independence protesters continue to erect road blockades, and unrest last week spread beyond the capital.

"Obviously we can't transport our clients in such conditions," Mr Nauka said.

He believes it will take years to rebuild New Caledonia, once peace returns.

"I don't see how our business can survive this."

'We need peace'

Four decades of peace opened New Caledonia as a destination for Australians seeking a tropical getaway.

It had been on Andrea Bold's bucket list for 30 years when she booked a family holiday there.

She was planning visits to the Isle of Pines and Nouméa in June, before she saw the territory's civil disorder unfold in the news.

Nine people, including two police officers, were killed as violence erupted over France's attempt to push through the electoral reforms.

More than 3,000 international visitors stranded in the tumult , including Australians, were evacuated from New Caledonia.

"We watched it for about a week, and it was very clear that things weren't going to get better quickly, so we made the decision to cancel the trip," Ms Bold said.

Qantas gave her a credit for the family's cancelled flights between Australia and Nouméa.

Smoke rises over city of Noumea, in New Caledonia.

She hasn't been able to reach anyone in New Caledonia about refunding her domestic flights.

After waiting several weeks, her travel insurer agreed to pay her claim for money lost on cancelled bookings.

Ms Bold was saddened to see how cancellations had affected tourism businesses.

"They've lost their livelihoods in the space of a couple of weeks," she said.

New Caledonia will stay firmly on her bucket list, but she expects a long wait.

"I can't imagine when we would go. And from what I've heard, there's a lot of rebuilding to happen in Nouméa. There's a lot of burnt buildings."

Before the turmoil, New Caledonia's tourism was recovering from COVID border closures, receiving more than 125,000 international tourists and 340,000 cruise ship passengers in 2023.

Most of its recovery was driven by increases in Australian, New Zealand and French tourists compared to 2019.

But there was room to grow, and tourism was viewed as an important industry as New Caledonia looked to develop its economy outside nickel mining.

The territory drew 24,000 Australian tourists last year, half the number compared to neighbouring Vanuatu (51,000), and a fraction of the number visiting Fiji (390,000).

A lake with mountains in the background and blue sky with some clouds.

Mismy Daly, president of business group Mouvement des Entreprises de Nouvelle-Calédonie, said businesses were ready to invest in the industry before recent events crashed the economy.

There were plans to open a new five-star hotel in the Loyalty Islands, east of New Caledonia's main island.

"All of this has been put to an end by the unrest."

P&O Cruises Australia and Carnival Cruise Line have cancelled 10 visits to Nouméa between June and August, re-routing to Vanuatu.

Air New Zealand has paused flights to Nouméa until September, while Qantas and Fiji Airways have not announced when they'll resume services to New Caledonia.

New Caledonia's international airport partially reopened earlier this month, and the territory's international carrier, Air Calin, is operating a limited schedule of flights.

Masked protesters kick back canisters of tear gas in clashes with police.

Tourism businesses, industry leaders and the government say New Caledonia is many months away from being able to host tourists.

In a recent survey, about 50 per cent of tourism operators said they believed they could resume business within three months if the unrest subsided.

A fresh surge in violence last week, after French authorities sent seven pro-independence activists to France for detention, may have dashed any hopes of a quicker return for tourism.

An armoured police officer with a gun stands over a flaming roadblock.

"For now, we don't feel safe. Mostly, it's complicated in New Caledonia to go from one place to another," Ms Daly said.

"We need peace. We need a political solution that is long lasting, that can guarantee that peace will be lasting as well."

Surviving, and hoping

In a bid to quell the unrest, France sent 3,000 troops and police to New Caledonia in May. Some hotels in Nouméa were requisitioned to accommodate the forces.

Other businesses are still looking for relief from the halt in tourism, and are concerned for their finances.

Debt repayments for a new bus weigh on Ms Fonua, who hopes her bank can give her some reprieve.

Erin Mattei, who operates La Belle Verte Canopy Tours, a zipline in Nouméa, believes she can continue her business if local people are able to visit.

"We survived the COVID crisis. I am going to do everything I can to keep our business open," she said.

Further north on New Caledonia's main island, Kiara Mediara, who operates Chez Élise guesthouse, is cooking with wood fires due to gas shortages.

"We're keeping our heads up and we're moving forward. I remain positive for the future of Kanaky," she said.

"I hope that things will calm down and that tourism will get back to what it was, because we like to share our knowledge and our culture with everyone."

A pristine white sand beach with palm trees and turquoise water.

But Ms Daly said the business community was concerned about the future of tourism operators outside Nouméa.

"We are pretty worried that for a long time, there will be no activity. And we are working closely with the French government to see if we can find ways to [keep] these companies living for the time being."

Tourism is only one of the industries devastated in New Caledonia's turmoil.

Ms Daly said the territory's unemployment was at 20 per cent, up from about 5 per cent before the violence erupted.

"We have lost most of our commercial distribution capacity in the Nouméa area," she said.

"Forty per cent of the food stores have been destroyed. Other commercial areas have been totally destroyed as well, the automobile sector, the industry sector in some areas.

"It's happened all of a sudden. And we need to figure out how we can manage the country now, in this new situation."

The electoral reforms have been suspended because of France's parliamentary elections, which begin today, and many in New Caledonia hope talks about a political solution to the unrest can start soon.

The territory's main tourism body, Nouvelle-Calédonie Tourisme, aims to have international visitors returning in the last quarter of 2024.

When it comes time to rebuild New Caledonia, Ms Daly said tourists will play a major part.

"We will be very happy to welcome tourism again," she said.

Ms Fonua said messages of support from her former customers have lifted her spirits during a dark chapter.

Her message for people overseas is to think positively about New Caledonia.

"Once things open up, I'm sure that a lot of tourists will come back in, because a lot of areas for tourism are not spoiled."

Best Ranger Competition 2024: See photos of the murderous 3-day event winners endured

  • Over 100 US Army troops endure grueling challenges to determine the service's toughest soldier.
  • More than 50 teams of two competed in the annual Best Ranger Competition in April.
  • Two first-time competitors came out on top — the 75th Ranger Regiment's fourth win in a row.

Insider Today

For four decades, US Army troops have tested their strength and endurance to determine the toughest soldiers during the annual Best Ranger Competition .

Over the course of 62 nearly continuous hours, Ranger-qualified soldiers compete in two-person teams, participating in a gauntlet of challenges mirroring real-world Ranger operations .

From the early hours of the morning to the dead of night, competitors demonstrate tactical skills, complete difficult obstacle courses , and traverse dozens of miles on both land and water.

In April, more than 100 US soldiers competed in the Best Ranger Competition, a mix of an outdoor adventure course with the soldiering's most grueling tasks. This is a look at the contest's three unforgiving days and the first-time competitors from the 75th Ranger Regiment who took home the title.

A measure of determination

zipline tour india

The Lt. Gen. David E. Grange Jr. Best Ranger Competition was first held in May 1982 at Fort Moore, then known as Fort Benning , near Columbus, Georgia.

Initially a contest among members of the Ranger Training Brigade , it has since expanded to include personnel from across the service, including Special Operations and Army National Guard.

"This competition is not just to see who is the toughest or the most physically fit," Lt. Gen. David E. Grange Jr., a commanding general of then-Fort Benning and namesake of the competition, once said. "It is to see who is mentally the strongest, the most determined to finish."

Competitors and participants

zipline tour india

According to Ranger Training Brigade Staff Sgts. Kevin Teran and Jim Moran, who won the competition in 1999, there are "two basic types of people that enter the Best Ranger competition — competitors and participants."

"Some arrive with the aim of simply surviving the challenges thrust upon them and to win a 't-shirt.' Such individuals usually fall out early on and even get injured," they wrote in an essay for the Association of the US Army. "Competitors are there to win. They exude the guts, mental toughness, intensity, and burning desire to succeed that characterize the US Army Ranger."

"These are the folks that are champions, both at the Best Ranger Competition and in their units," they added.

A challenge right at the start

Even before the sun rose on the first day of the competition in mid-April, soldiers were already put to the test in the first event — a 7-mile run wearing a weighted vest and carrying a 60-pound sandbag.

Teams were required to cross the finish line together to complete the event, and the time to complete the race determined each team's ranking.

Malvesti Obstacle Course

Competitors had to clear all six obstacles of the Rangers' notoriously difficult Malvesti Obstacle Course as quickly as possible.

The obstacle course is part of the Army's Ranger School and tests students through a series of pull-ups, rope climbs, ladders, and the "worm pit," a shallow, muddy pit of water covered in barbed wire.

Competitors had little time to recover before proceeding to the Ranger Mile, a series of events that included carrying two 40-pound kettlebells, doing six dead hang chin-ups, and running two runs totaling three miles.

Fast-roping

Teams were also tested on their fast-roping skills , following commands to load onto a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter and exiting the aircraft in one minute.

Marksmanship

Competitors demonstrated their marksmanship with several different firearms, including an M240 machine gun, an M17 pistol, and an M4 shotgun. Each team was given two minutes to familiarize themselves with the weapon, followed by one minute to load, fire at five targets, and unload the weapon.

Rankings in the event were determined by the team's total number of targets hit, and in the event of a tie, the number of rounds remaining after the course was considered as the tiebreaker.

Putting their skills to the test

The second day of the Best Ranger Competition featured a round-robin series of events, including mortar emplacement. Lobbed mortars can rain explosives on enemy positions like trenches and can suppress fire for infantry movements.

Heavy lifting

Competitors put their physical strength to the test, lifting heavy objects like tires.

Difficult maneuvers

Other events included lifting, throwing, or crawling with weighted sandbags.

Simulating real-world Ranger operations

Competitors tackled obstacles resembling real-world Ranger operations, such as cutting through a steel-reinforced frame or using tools to pry open a door.

Zip-line to the finish

After completing the day-stakes events, soldiers then underwent an arduous tactical water movement event, which included tasks on land, water, and air. First, competitors embarked on a run to a zip-line tower and zip-lined across the Chattahoochee River.

They then used rafts to paddle along the river, after which they carried on land to the finish line to complete the event.

Another obstacle course

The final day of the competition included yet another obstacle course, requiring competitors to climb a rappel tower using a rope. The rest of the course was split into two tracks, allowing teams to compete side-by-side.

3-gun event

The third day featured another marksmanship event using an M1911 pistol, an XM7 assault rifle, and an M1 rifle.

Competitors were tasked to move through the course as quickly as possible while engaging with as many targets as they could, with time penalties given for missed targets.

Helocasting

As part of the competition, soldiers also had to complete a " helocast ," a little-known insertion and exfiltration technique used by US special operations in hostile territory.

Competitors had 10 minutes to construct a poncho raft, which they had to load onto a UH-60 helicopter. The helicopter carried them to an exit point over a pond, where competitors had to swim and transport the raft and equipment to a finish point on shore.

Final buddy run

The final event of the three-day competition is a buddy run, in which both team members carry an inert M4 while traveling together toward the finish line.

Newcomer team named Best Ranger

At the end of the competition, scores from all of the events were tallied to determine team rankings — and a team of newcomers came out on top.

Team 40 — First Lt. Andrew Winski and Sgt. Matthew Dunphy — earned the highest cumulative marks out of all 56 teams, granting them the title of Best Ranger. Among more than 100 competitors, Winski had the highest marks on marksmanship.

Both first-time competitors, the duo represented the 75th Ranger Regiment, marking the fourth year in a row that members of the unit won the competition.

"It means a lot to me, mostly for my partner, I didn't want to let him down, and we didn't want to let the regiment down," Winski said after completing the buddy run event.

Winski said he was "truly grateful" for the opportunity to participate in the competition and show "what the Army's Ranger Regiment is and … what kind of Rangers we produce."

Gen. James Mingus, the Army's vice chief of staff, acknowledged that completing the competition is no small feat.

"At the end of the day, the physical, mental — all those things have got to come together in a technical way," Mingus said during the awards ceremony after the competition. "You have to be a master at your craft, you have to be at the top of your game physically and intellectually and mentally, which sets this apart from, I think, any other long endurance event that's out there."
