How Many Seats Are There For Taylor Swift’s Concerts At National Stadium? SG Influencer Gets JC Maths Tutor To Calculate

Looking at the math, there's probably still hope to catch Taylor live in concert even if you did not manage to get your pre-sale tix today.

Ainslyn Lim

Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour tickets went on pre-sale today, and the reception, as expected, was overwhelming to say the least. In fact, it's been dubbed 'The Great War (UOB pre-sale)' online.

The concert is set to be held for six nights next year at the National Stadium, which can house a crowd of 55K at full capacity.  But just how many seats are up for purchase during Tay Tay's tour here?

Yesterday (Jul 4), local influencer Nicole Liel  answered that question with the help of her JC Maths tutor on TikTok.

“I was so desperate, I went to find my JC maths tuition teacher to help me find out how many seats there will be for the Taylor Swift concert,” laughed Nicole at the start of her vid.

Pointing out highlighted areas on a printed seating map of the National Stadium, her tutor explained that while some areas were reserved for the audience, they had to take into account the sections of the venue that would not be “open” during the concert.

Those sections in this case, were the seats that did not appear in the concert’s seating map.

After calculating the number of seats in the parts that are available for concert-goers to buy, Nicole's tutor came up with a rough estimate of 32,682 seats.

Then came more numbers which included the addition of the floor seats which they calculated by parts in relation to the other seats. They eventually came to a grand total of 44,639 seats available per night.

The number of seats multiplied by the six nights Taylor will be performing in Singapore means that some 267,834 lucky Swifties will get their chance to see the singer live.

But are their calculations really accurate?

8days.sg reached out to concert organiser AEG Presents but did not recieve a response as of press time.

In any case, there should be still a ton of tickets available when general sales go live on Fri (Jul 7), so good luck!

You can watch Nicole's TikTok below:

General ticketing will open on Ticketmaster, Ticketmaster's hotline, and at all SingPost outlets on Jul 7, 12pm. Click here to buy.

American pop superstar Taylor Swift will close out the Asia-Pacific leg of her record-shattering The Eras Tour with six concerts at the Singapore National Stadium from March 2 to 9. The Straits Times highlights what you need to know “all too well” about the musical extravaganza, named for the different “eras” of her career.

The Eras Tour In Numbers

national stadium eras tour capacity

  • More than US$1 billion (S$1.34 billion) grossed so far over 60 shows in 2023, making it the first concert tour to pass this mark.
  • 151 shows in 22 countries, all held in large-capacity stadiums.
  • Venues with the most shows: SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, the United States, in August 2023; National Stadium in Singapore in March 2024. Both venues would have hosted six Eras Tour concerts by the end of 2024.
  • 45 songs over more than 3½ hours.
  • 9 to 10 Eras across 10 acts, depending on the songs performed during the acoustic set.

The Eras Stage

national stadium eras tour capacity

A. Main stage

Catch the backup singers and instrumentalists at the wings, flanking the main screen.

For the most part, the main screen depicts what is happening on stage. But it will occasionally display special video footage during certain songs, such as Anti-Hero (Midnights).

Highlights:

  • Look What You Made Me Do (Reputation) features Swift’s backup dancers and singers trapped in glass boxes while dressed up as previous versions of her.
  • Tolerate It (Evermore) showcases Swift acting out a crumbling relationship over a dramatically long dining table.

B. Diamond stage

Keep an eye on this rhombus-shaped segment of the stage, as Swift spends most of her time here.

  • Miss Americana & The Heartbreak Prince (Lover) kicks off the concert, with Swift appearing from under a canopy of giant feathers.
  • Delicate (Reputation) showcases LED screens which line the stage floor and “shatter” during key moments of the song.

C. End stage

  • Karma (Midnights) ends the concert with a confetti shower over the stage and stadium floor.
  • 22 (Red) sends Swift and her posse of dancers to the end stage, so that she can bestow the fedora she is wearing on a concertgoers.

D. Notable details

1. Dynamic lights:  Roving spotlights and lights along the perimeter of the stage ensure that Swift is always well-lit. They also create stunning visual effects that can be seen even by those sitting in the nosebleed sections.

2. LED floor panels:  People in the stands enjoy a visual feast in the form of a light show on the stage floor, which is lined with LED tiles. During Swift’s viral dive, for instance, the tiles are lit to resemble crashing waves.

3. Hydraulic platforms:  These Lego-like blocks move up and down throughout the show, giving Swift a high vantage point from which to belt out her hits.

Highlights: Vigilante S*** (Midnights) and Ready For It (Reputation).

4. Epic dive:  To set up the concert’s Midnights finale with a bang, Swift takes a leap into the stage. Footage on the floor panels then shows her “swimming” towards the main stage.

5. Acoustic set:  Swift performs two surprise songs – which are different for every concert – accompanied by a guitar and a piano painted with flowers, respectively.

Friendship bracelets

Inspired by the lyrics of You’re On Your Own Kid, off the 2022 album Midnights, fans have taken to making beaded bracelets to trade with one another. These are often colour-coded according to the era, and might feature a song title, acronym, phrase or other “Swiftie” in-jokes and references.

LED wristband

All attendees will receive a white wristband, powered by infrared signal technology, which lights up in different colours throughout the concert. Pay close attention during Look What You Made Me Do (Reputation), as the wristbands create an effect of “slithering snakes”.

Taylor swift the eras tour in singapore: what to expect and prepare.

We’re only a few weeks away from Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour concerts in Singapore and so we decided to create a concise, detailed, and simple-to-understand guide for all Swifties who will be watching her at the National Stadium on March 2, 3, 4 and 7, 8, 9.

Keep reading to learn what to expect and what to prepare for the concert!

TAYLOR SWIFT: THE ERAS TOUR

Photo: Marcelo Endelli

1. Time, Location, and How to Get There

The Eras Tour in Singapore will be held at the National Stadium. Commuting via MRT to the venue is highly advisable as traffic might build up throughout the day. The closest station to the National Stadium is CC6 Stadium  accessible via the Circle Line (yellow). Other nearby stations are CC7 Mountbatten (yellow/Circle Line) and EW10 Kallang (green/East West Line) which will take approximately 18 minutes to walk to the National Stadium. You can check Google Maps on which station to go to that will easily take you there.

Gates and security checks will open at 4 PM . Although seats are all reserved, it’s still best to be there around that time or earlier if you want to take a lot of photos or trade friendship bracelets with others since many Swifties will be queuing.

The concert begins at exactly 6 PM with Sabrina Carpenter performing as the front act (approximately 30 minutes). Taylor Swift will then take the stage at around 6:45 PM . The concert will run for 3 and a half hours (44 songs).

2. Bag Restrictions

As of writing, there are no instructions about bags needing to be clear/see-through. Just make sure that your bag doesn’t exceed 35 x 20 x 30 cm (14 x 8 x 12 inches) , i.e. too large to be stored underneath a seat. Pack light, Swifties!

3. What to Bring

The following are a must to pack in your concert bag!

  • Empty water bottle (there are water stations around the stadium for you to refill it when inside)
  • Hat or collapsible/pocketable umbrella (to protect you from the heat of the sun!)
  • Cards and cash
  • Alcohol or hand sanitizer
  • Hand fan or portable fan (you need to stay cool!)

If you’re planning on wearing boots or heels, you may want to bring extra slippers just in case your feet will hurt by the end of the night.

Binoculars are also said to be allowed as long as the size isn’t larger than an A4 paper.

4. What NOT to Bring

The following are prohibited in the venue:

  • Outside food and drinks (there will be food booths there but it’s still best to eat a heavy meal as prices may be expensive)
  • Non-collapsible umbrellas
  • Noisemakers and musical instruments
  • Flags or banners larger than 1 x 2 meters that have not been pre-approved for the event
  • Placards with offensive words and advertisements
  • Fansigns bigger than 21 x 29.7 cm or 8.3 x 11.7 inches (A4-size)
  • Professional photo or video cameras
  • Selfie sticks, gimbals, tripods, and monopods
  • Anything resembling weapons
  • Laser pointers and drones
  • Glassware, cans,
  • Bicycles, skateboards, skates, scooters, helmets
  • Chairs and stools
  • Animals other than trained assistance dogs
  • Helium balloons and other inflatables

If you end up bringing a prohibited item, you may either be denied entry or be required to deposit them at the deposit counter for a non-refundable fee of SGD10 (~PHP 416) per item.

It’s unclear if concert attendees are allowed to bring in small film cameras and Polaroid cameras but just to stay on the safe side, leave them at home or your hotel.

Security will also not check your IDs before entering the venue so there’s no need to bring your passport. If ever, just take a photo of it and save it on your phone.

5. Ticket Printing

Printed and electronic tickets must be presented at the gates. Print-at-home tickets will be issued two weeks before the event date. Do not bring just a screenshot of your ticket.

6. Where to Enter and Seating Map

You can check which gate to enter on your ticket.

Below is the map of the gates including staircase locations and where to find the lift, as well as the seating map:

National Stadium Viewing Map Lift

7. Water Stations and Restrooms

There are enough restrooms around the Stadium (approximately 1 every 2 gates).

Water coolers are located:

  • between gates 3 and 4 (level 3)
  • between gates 15 and 16 (level 3)
  • behind sections 109, 117, 122, 128, 134, and 142 (level 3)
  • behind sections 410, 416, 435, and 441 (level 4)
  • behind sections 608 and 609 (level 6)

You can buy water at level 3 between gates 22 & 23 and 10 & 11.

8. Merch Booths

Lines at the merch booths will be long so it’s best to line up a day before or after the date you’re watching, or be there super early, so you don’t stress out about the time. Also, prepare to make contactless payments via Visa, Mastercard, Paynow, ApplePay, Samsung Pay, and GooglePay because the booths might not accept cash.

Merch booths will also have varying operating times. Again, it’s best to come in early so you can secure the merch you want. Take note that these merch booths are open to all, even those who don’t have tickets to watch the concert.

9. Other things to know

Livestreaming of the event is strictly prohibited.

“You need to calm down,” exhorted American pop star Taylor Swift during the fourth song of her sold-out Eras Tour concert at the National Stadium on March 2, the first of six planned shows at the 55,000-capacity venue.

The line was not an admonishment to the high-energy crowd to settle down, but a lyric from one of more than 40 songs Swift played during her 3½-hour set.

The concert was a celebration of the 34-year-old singer-songwriter’s career – from her second album, Fearless (2009), to her most recent album, Midnights (2022).

Swift will also perform on March 3, 4, 7, 8 and 9, and is the second act to front six shows at the National Stadium, after Coldplay did the same in January.

When fans put up their phone flashlights for Marjorie, a tradition on the Eras Tour, Swift said she was “so moved” by the gesture, adding that the song was about her maternal grandmother.

In 1968, The Straits Times reported that Swift’s grandmother Marjorie Finlay, an opera singer, was chosen to play the part of a peasant girl in a production at the Victoria Theatre.

Three Taylor Swift concerts were scheduled to take place In Vienna from Aug 8 to 10, with police expecting around 65,000 attendees each day.

“My mum actually spent a lot of her childhood with her mum and dad and sister growing up in Singapore. A lot of the time when we would come here on tour, my mum would drive me past her house, where she went to school.

“I have been hearing about Singapore all my life. To get to come here and play a show this big… it means the world,” Swift told the rapt crowd.

There were a few security hiccups as people had to be repeatedly cleared from standing in the aisles between floor sections.

But Swift remained a consummate performer throughout, moving from era to era, and commanding every inch of the sprawling stage with an ease that reflected her 18 years in the music industry.

She took the stage at 7pm after an opening set by American singer Sabrina Carpenter.

Carpenter caused a brief tizzy during her performance of Nonsense, a song where she is known to customise the outro in a homage to the city she is performing in.

“Gardens by the Bay, I wanna go there. Then I’ll take you somewhere that has no hair. Singapore, you’re so perfect, it’s no fair,” she sang to cheers from the stadium, which was 90 per cent full by the end of her opening set.

Together with her army of backup dancers, singers and instrumentalists, Swift whisked fans through a song-and-dance extravaganza peppered with more local references, including a sprinkling of Singlish during We Are Never Getting Back Together.

During the song, backup dancer Kameron Saunders usually responds with “like ever” during Swift’s spoken interlude. In Australia, where Swift performed before arriving in Singapore, he said “yeah, nah” or “naur” – local slang for no.

For Singapore’s opening night, he countered with “no lah” instead – to the delight of the crowd.

Another highlight was part of Blank Space, from Swift’s 1989 era. The crowd roared “Singapore” at certain parts of the bridge – one of the chants that had been collectively agreed upon by her fandom.

Ms Yvonne Inglin, a 16-year-old student from School of the Arts Singapore, entered the venue at 5.40pm. Her brother gave her Category 1 tickets that very morning, with a prime view of the diamond stage where Swift spent most of her time during the concert.

“I am so excited, I can’t believe I am here, and I can’t wait to trade a million bracelets,” she said.

Mr Manmit Kumakale and Mr Jas Thakker, both 21-year-old art students from Pune, India, were decked out in outfits inspired by Swift’s music video for her song Bejewelled. They arrived in Singapore on March 1, having purchased their Category 3 tickets during the first ticket sale in July 2023.

“We decided to get ‘bejewelled’ for the concert… we are just so ready to hear her sing and do her thing,” said Mr Manmit.

Swift’s The Eras Tour – where she performs songs from nine to 10 of her albums, depending on what she chooses in the acoustic “surprise song” set – has been a record-breaking juggernaut from the get-go.

She played two mash-ups as part of the show – a pairing of Mine from Speak Now (2010) and Starlight from Red (2012) on the guitar, and I Don’t Wanna Live Forever – the soundtrack to the 2017 film Fifty Shades Darker – and Dress on the piano. Dress is from Reputation (2017), an album that booted Swift’s “good girl” image out the door.

At the end of 2023, The Eras Tour became the first concert tour to hit US$1 billion (S$1.35 billion) in gross revenue, after accounting for only 60 shows out of a planned 151.

Singapore is Swift’s only South-east Asia stop on The Eras Tour. The only other Asian city to host Swift was Tokyo, where she performed four shows at the Tokyo Dome in January.

Tickets for the six concerts, priced between $88++ and $1,228++, sold out hours after they went on sale in July 2023. A second, smaller sale in January 2024 also sold out within a few hours.

Swift last performed in Singapore in 2015, playing two shows at the Singapore Indoor Stadium. She also finished off her Red Tour there in June 2014, and kicked off her Speak Now World Tour in February 2011 at the same venue.

After she closes out her final Singapore concert on March 9, she will take a short break, before kicking off a Europe leg in Paris in May.

But fans present at her opening show on March 2 are already looking forward to her return to Singapore.

“I wasn’t really a Swiftie until I saw The Eras Tour movie in November. Seeing the concert in person tonight, it gave me a whole new appreciation for her music and her as a performer. It is also my first concert in Singapore, so the experience is truly memorable. Definitely beats painting by the numbers at home,” said 27-year-old student Lee Pei Yuan.

It’s finally happening!

“I’m enchanted to announce my next tour: Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour, a journey through the musical eras of my career (past and present!),” Taylor wrote in her official tour announcement. “I can’t WAIT to see your gorgeous faces out there. It’s been a long time coming 🥰.”

The announcement comes after Taylor teased a potential tour during her October 24, 2022 appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon . When Jimmy says she hasn’t toured in four years and that fans want her to, Taylor said “I think I should do it.” And do it, she will.

Here’s everything we know about Taylor Swift’s Eras Stadium Tour, from its setlist to how you can snag tickets and merch. Of course, we’ll keep all the updates coming as Taylor hits the road.

When and where did Taylor Swift’s tour start?

The North American leg of the Eras Stadium Tour kicked off at the State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona on March 17, 2023. The city of Glendale fully embraced the honor of hosting her first Eras concert — in fact, Mayor Jerry P. Weiers of Glendale even declared that the city would temporarily be renamed Swift City for the duration of Taylor's performances on March 17th and 18th.

Mayor Weiers gave the official announcement at a press conference and made sure to incorporate plenty of T. Swift-themed puns, noting that all Swifties are encouraged to share their smiles “that could light up this whole town” on all social media platforms because “the best people in life are free.”

The U.S. Eras tour will end with a grand finale at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, California on August 9, 2023.

Which cities is Taylor Swift playing the Eras Tour?

After kicking off the tour in Glendale, Arizona, Taylor hit a ton of different cities in the U.S., from Foxborough, Massachusetts to East Rutherford, New Jersey. She initially shared the official tour dates on November 1, 2022, but she soon added eight more dates due to high demand (!!).

But, eight more shows still wasn’t enough due to increased demand, so Taylor Nation announced that 17 (!!) additional shows were added to the Eras Tour. “She gave us 8 shows last week, honey, but we want ‘em all. Due to unprecedented demand for tickets to #TSTheErasTour , Taylor has added 17 more shows in the US!,” her official fan club wrote.

And then, because Taylor is so good to us, she added one more new show in Los Angeles in the Sofi Stadium for September 7, 2023. See all her official tour dates listed below, including her incredible lineup of supporting acts.

Does Eras have international tour dates?

Yes! In June 2023, Taylor came through on her promise of crossing the pond. After the Latin American leg of the Eras Stadium Tour, Taylor will take the show to Asia, Australia, and Europe, starting February 7, 2024. She’ll begin with four shows in Toyko, and from there, will jet-set to major cities including Melbourne, Sydney, Singapore, Paris, Amsterdam, and London. Check out the full list of international tour dates below.

But Taylor wasn’t done yet. Days after her initial announcement, the artist added one new show in Los Angeles and 8 news shows in the UK and Europe . Then, on July 5, she tossed 14 more European tour dates into the line-up, extending her stay in cities including Paris, Stockholm, Lisbon, Edinburgh, Liverpool, Dublin, Amsterdam, Milan, Warsaw, and Vienna. See the complete list below.

Has Taylor Swift made any special announcements during the Eras Stadium Tour?

Taylor went back to her roots for a three-night tour in her hometown of Nashville and kicked off her weekend-long stay by announcing the official release date for her third re-release, Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) . (Funny enough, Speak Now was Taylor’s third studio album.) The Grammy winner later took to Instagram to celebrate the album's release.

“It fills me with such pride and joy to announce that my version of Speak Now will be out July 7 (just in time for July 9th, iykyk 😆),” she wrote. “I first made Speak Now, completely self-written, between the ages of 18 and 20. The songs that came from this time in my life were marked by their brutal honesty, unfiltered diaristic confessions and wild wistfulness. I love this album because it tells a tale of growing up, flailing, flying and crashing … and living to speak about it.”

Taylor also revealed that there will be new music released on the project as well. “With six extra songs I’ve sprung loose from the vault, I absolutely cannot wait to celebrate Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) with you on July 7th.”

How much is Taylor Swift expected to earn from the Eras Tour?

Taylor is raking in big coins courtesy of the Eras Stadium Tour. Bloomberg estimates that the Grammy winner could earn more than $10 million each night from ticket sales — but she isn’t the only one reaping the rewards of the tour.

According to the outlet, Eras could generate $5 billion (!) for local economies throughout the U.S., with an economic impact that’s reportedly greater than 50 countries. Bloomberg says a study from QuestionPro found that concertgoers spend an average of $1,327.74 on tickets, outfits and costumes, merchandise, food and drink, and travel combined.

Who are the opening acts for Taylor Swift’s Eras Stadium Tour?

Paramore (!!) has joined the tour. While announcing the 14 added European dates, Taylor shared that the pop-punk band will be her opening act. “I get to travel the world doing shows with @paramore!!,” Taylor wrote on Instagram. “@yelyahwilliams and I have been friends since we were teens in Nashville and now we get to frolic around the UK/Europe next summer??? I’m screaming???”

Sabrina Carpenter also recently announced that she’ll join Taylor’s Eras tour throughout Latin America. The “emails i can’t send” singer posted the official dates along with a screenshot of a 13-year-old tweet that read, “The Taylor Swift concert was amazing, had so much fun I cant wait to have a world tour someday like hers! lol with 2 sold out shows!!!!!” We’re not crying, you are. 🥹

Sabrina will be the special guest for Taylor’s Brazil, Argentina, and Mexico City performances from August 24 to November 26.

While most of Taylor’s opening acts and special guests are her friends and collaborators, there are also fresh, new artists who are getting their foot in the door with the honor of playing stadiums with Taylor Swift early in their careers. Taylor’s other supporting acts include Paramore, Haim, Pheobe Bridgers, Muna, Beabadoobee, Girl in Red, Gayle, Gracie Abrams, and Owenn.

How can I buy tickets for Taylor Swift's Eras Stadium Tour?

Following the TicketMaster debacle during the Verified Fan and Capital One pre-sales, Taylor’s team worked with the retailer to give Swifties good karma on Monday, December 12, 2022. Per NBC News , fans started receiving emails from TicketMaster that revealed they’d have a second chance at securing tickets to the Eras tour. “You were selected for this opportunity because you have been identified as a fan who received a boost during the Verified Fan presale but did not purchase tickets,” the email read. “We apologize for the difficulties you may have experienced, and have been asked by Taylor’s team to create this additional opportunity for you to purchase tickets.”

According to fans on Twitter, those who had received an official boost for the Verified Fan Pre-Sale but didn’t purchase tickets were granted an opportunity to buy a maximum of two due to high demand. Fans who received the message from TicketMaster received an individual invite to submit their purchase request before Friday, December 23, 2022. The retailer claims that invitations “will be staggered by tour dates in each city.”

For better chances of snagging a ticket, fans were instructed to register for TicketMaster’s Verified Fan program before November 9, 2022 to “ensure tickets get into the hands of fans.” The TicketMaster Verified Fan pre-sale took place on November 15, 2022, and due to unprecedented demand, tons of Swifties grew frustrated with the ticket-selling platform.

TicketMaster issued multiple statements during the chaotic Verified Fan pre-sale, which reportedly included queues of more than 20,000 people for some dates. Because of this “historically unprecedented demand,” the pre-sales scheduled for West Coast shows in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Santa Clara, and Seattle were postponed to 3 p.m. PST on November 15, 2022 instead of its original time of 10 a.m. PST. TicketMaster also rescheduled the Capital One card member pre-sale to November 16, 2022 at 2 P.M. local venue time.

The ticket retailer included notable updates in the following Tweet:

According to TicketMaster’s official Twitter account, these are the best ticket-buying practices to ensure you secure a spot during the pre-sale.

On November 17, 2022, TicketMaster announced that the general ticket sale, which was scheduled to take place on Friday, November 18, 2022, was canceled due to “extraordinarily high demands.”

“Due to extraordinarily high demands on ticketing systems and insufficient remaining ticket inventory to meet that demand, tomorrow's public on-sale for Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour has been canceled,” the company wrote on Twitter. Greg Maffei, the CEO of Liberty Media, the largest shareholder in concert promotion company Live Nation and its ticket-selling platform Ticketmaster, also told CNBC that 14 million people tried to purchase tickets for the tour when pre-sale was launched on Tuesday to 1.5 million verified fans.

SeatGeek’s website also reported that the general sale was canceled on their platform for the same reasons.

According to a report by Variety , ticket prices ranged from $49 up to $449, with VIP packages starting at $199 and going up to $899. Notably, this did not include a meet-and-greet package as Taylor's official fan club, Taylor Nation, tends to scout super fans on social media and in the crowds at shows to meet the star for no additional cost.

While Taylor hasn’t done any official meet and greets for the Eras tour yet, she did keep a sweet promise she made to Arizona teen Isabella McCune. In 2018, Isabella went through a tragic accident that left her hospitalized with burns that covered more than 65 percent of her body. She was only 8 years old at the time, and she couldn't attend Taylor’s Reputation Stadium Tour because of her hospitalization.

Per ABC 15 , Taylor visited her longtime fan at the time and left a note that read, “Isabelle, I hope you feel better soon. I'm so honored you've been listening to my music. You're so awesome and I can't wait to have you at a show. Stay strong, gorgeous. Love, Taylor.”

Now, 13-year-old Isabella had the chance to attend the opening night of Taylor’s Eras tour in Glendale, Arizona. “Not only the fact that I'm able to go and I got these tickets gifted to me, they're from Taylor Swift and her team and they remembered me and thought of me to give me these tickets,” Isabella told the local news affiliate, adding that Taylor's "music helped [her] a lot while I was in the hospital."

Has Taylor Swift addressed the TicketMaster debacle?

The singer-songwriter originally took to her Instagram Stories on November 18, 2022, to air her frustrations and share her disappointment in the ticket-buying process.

“It goes without saying that I'm extremely protective of my fans. We've been doing this for decades together and over the years, I've brought so many elements of my career in house,” Taylor began. “I've done this SPECIFICALLY to improve the quality of my fans' experience by doing it myself with my team who care as much about my fans as I do. It's really difficult for me to trust an outside entity with these relationships and loyalties, and excruciating for met to just watch mistakes happen with no recourse.”

“It's truly amazing that 2.4 million people got tickets, but it really pisses me off that a lot of them feel like they went through several bear attacks to get them,” she added.

Taylor ended the message in sharing her hopes that there will be future opportunities for her and her fans to be together and “sing these songs.” See Taylor’s full message below.

What is taylor swift’s eras stadium tour setlist.

Taylor’s set is a little longer than her past tours because of all her iconic eras. With 10 (!!) studio albums — four of which haven’t been properly supported on tour — there is a ton of new material for Taylor to explore on stage. On opening night in Glendale, Arizona, the Grammy winner performed 44 songs, which rounded out to about three hours.

Find the full setlist for the tour's opening night below.

“Miss Americana & the Heartbreak Prince” “Cruel Summer” “The Man” “You Need to Calm Down” “Lover” “The Archer” “Fearless “You Belong With Me” “Love Story” “Tis the Damn Season” “Willow” “Marjorie” “Champagne Problems” “Tolerate It” “…Ready for It?” “Delicate” “Don’t Blame Me” “Look What You Made Me Do” “Enchanted” “22” “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” “I Knew You Were Trouble” “All Too Well (10 Minute Version)” “Invisible String” “Betty” “The Last Great American Dynasty” “August”/ “Illicit Affairs” “My Tears Ricochet” “Cardigan” “Style” “Blank Space” “Shake It Off” “Wildest Dreams” “Bad Blood” Surprise song — subject to change Surprise song — subject to change “Lavender Haze” “Anti-Hero” “Midnight Rain” “Vigilante Sh-t” “Bejeweled” “Mastermind” “Karma”

During her Arlington, Texas show on March 31, Taylor swapped out “Invisible String” — which fans believe is about her former boyfriend of six years, Joe Alwyn — for a bittersweet breakup track off Folklore , “The 1.” The setlist switch-up came amid Tay’s breakup with the Conversations With Friends actor.

The opening track off her Grammy-winning album, Folklore , includes the following lyrics:

“But we were something, don't you think so? / Roaring 20s, tossing pennies in the pool / And if my wishes came true / It would've been you / In my defense, I have none / For never leaving well enough alone / But it would've been fun / If you would've been the one.” Due to the nature of the lyrics, fans believe the song switch may have hinted at the couple’s split.

What are the surprise songs for Taylor Swift's Eras Tour?

On the first night of the tour, Taylor revealed that she’ll perform not one, but two surprise songs during the acoustic portion of the show.

“The plan, the goal, would be to play different songs every single night and never repeat one. Right? So that when you heard one on this tour, you would know it's the only time that I was going to play it in the acoustic set, unless — caveat — unless I mess it up so badly that I have to do it over again in some other city. Send your best wishes towards me that I don't do that,” the singer said, per Billboard .

Taylor Swift Eras Tour in Singapore review: I'm a middle-aged metalhead. Here's how I sat through the opening concert

Will i become a full-fledged swiftie by the time the concert is through or will i be repulsed by all the glittery sequin-clad fans.

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

WAS it YOLO (you only live once) or FOMO (fear of missing out) that made me agree immediately to review Taylor Swift's much talked-about Eras Tour concert at the National Stadium?

You see, I'm the wrong demographic to be a "Swiftie": male, on the wrong side of 40 years old, and (this is the most crucial part) an unapologetic heavy metal aficionado. I know fellow metalheads who would shirk away in horror at the thought of being anywhere near the glittery sequin-clad fans of the pop megastar.

But I do like Swift. I admire her exceptional songwriting talent, her effortless charm, and most of all, how she fought for what she believed in. Her battles with Spotify and especially for the ownership of her recordings from Scooter Braun are already the stuff of pop music lore, and typify her willingness to stand up against authorities in order to be herself. This rebellious streak of hers actually feels pretty "metal" to me.

The thing is, I've only sampled Swift's music in small doses - when one of her catchy songs come on my radio, or when I search online for her hits to hear what the fuss is about. Taken piecemeal, Swift's songs are enjoyable nuggets of radiant pop music, but I don't even own any of her 10 best-selling albums. What will happen if I have to brave her thousands of screaming fans and sit through more than 40 of her songs at one go?

It's not YOLO, nor is it FOMO. It's more out of curiosity, and a test of whether there's a place for Swift amid my hard rock and heavy metal music sensibilities.

Fans brighten Sports Hub with costumes, friendship bands

I had half a mind to attend the concert in my black Metallica T-shirt and black jeans, just to troll the Swifties and their bright-coloured attire. Thankfully I chickened out, and decided instead to wear a red polo shirt - paying homage to Swift's "Red" album, see?

I could just about blend in with the fans - local and foreign - who were out in full force on the opening night on Saturday. They were clad in their best Swift costumes as they strolled around Kallang Wave Mall, daring anyone to comment that they couldn't pull it off like their beloved idol. Some of them also had pink wigs, with their faces and nails painted for the occasion, and the mall resembled a surreal model runway for these superfans.

But the best thing about this fandom is the "friendship band" phenomenon - with fans exchanging these handmade bracelets with coloured and lettered beads spelling out Swift's album titles. It's a brilliant, organic fan movement that symbolises the deep connection between Swift and her fans. Now, if only metal fans can start a band T-shirt exchange movement... but I digress.

I got two friendship bands from my kind concert companion, and suddenly I felt like I'm a legit Swift fan as I entered the stadium to be among the 50,000-odd die-hards. Yes, I was ready to scream and sing blissfully along to all her hits. Or was I?

Swift is the consummate performer at her show

Swift stepped onto the gigantic stage on the dot at 7pm, and the stadium was immediately enveloped in high-pitched screams from her faithful Swifties. Mobile phones were whipped out and held up high, with the fans excitedly recording their idol's every move as they lustily sang along to "Cruel Summer".

Immediately I felt inadequate. Yes I've heard that hit before, but no, I didn't memorise every word. Every of the Swifties did. It was a goosebumps-inducing moment to hear 50,000 voices belting out the "it's a cruuueeel summer" chorus hook. That was the only line I sang along though, as I mumbled through the rest.

Thankfully, Swift didn't mind, with her mile-wide smile plastered on the massive backdrop screen as she breezed through the lilting songs from her "Lover" album. That was the first stop of her Eras Tour set, which would take the concert-goers through all but one of her 10 LPs in her wildly-successful 20-year career. "For those who have come on board for the first time, let us show them all the fun they've missed," she cooed.

So what did I miss all these years? Well, a consummate performer who was equally at ease whether she was singing amid intricately-choreographed dance moves with her troupe, belting out diva-style on a raised platform, or alone in the spotlight, guitar in hand, singing plaintively as she did when she started out as a country-folk singer all those years ago. Even with cameras constantly on her, Swift was utterly in command of her show.

But she wouldn't have been half as popular without the masterful songs she wrote. Not only did she oblige with her biggest hits such as "Love Story", "Anti-Hero" and "Shake It Off", but she also delved into her rich trove of personal yet universal tunes that captivated fans of all ages around the world.

"Majorie", about her maternal grandmother, was an emotional highlight as fans spontaneously lit up the stadium with their phone lights and a visibly-touched Swift recounted her personal connection with Singapore . On one of the night's more improvisational moments, Swift deftly blended "Mine" with "Starlight" - songs from different albums, but evoking the same sentiments.

My personal highlight came midway through her set, as she stood alone with her guitar on the raised platform with a flowing red dress. For over 10 hypnotic minutes, Swift had the audience rapt with "All Too Well", her devastating breakup tale. No backup dancers, no pyrotechnics, just a woman with her broken heart. It was magnificently heart-rending.

Even more impressed by Swift than before

And still her songs came, and came, and came - until a staggering 45 of them were belted out after three hours and 15 minutes. Everyone was happy but utterly spent by the time Swift took her final bow.

Amazingly, Swift was still able to dance through her final song "Karma". I was already nursing aching limbs - and I still had to contend with dragging my tired body with the thousands heading home.

So, am I a full-fledged Swiftie now, having sat through her entire Eras Tour show? Of course not. As much as I deeply admire her songwriting skills, her songs are decidedly feminine. To quote my companion, they evoke exactly how a woman feels at every stage of her life. Not a man.

And because I'm male, it's really weird for me to try singing along to songs like "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" or "You Belong With Me". They most certainly don't speak to me as much as to Swift's female faithfuls.

But that's perfectly fine. I still have the earthy stomps and masculine lyrics of hard rock and heavy metal to get my adrenaline going. And it was still an evening absolutely well spent - I was thoroughly entertained by Swift, and there were enough emotional highs in her wondrous performance to make for a memorable occasion. At the end of the show, I was left even more impressed by Swift's all-around musical talents.

Now, if only I can convince the Singapore government to provide a grant to bring in Metallica....

Taylor Swift to hold 3 shows at Singapore National Stadium in March 2024 as part of The Eras Tour

SINGAPORE — American country-pop singer-songwriter Taylor Swift will be performing at the National Stadium from March 2 to 4 next year as part of her world tour.

Taylor Swift performing onstage for the opening night of The Eras Tour at State Farm Stadium in Arizona, the United States on March 17, 2023.

  • American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift will be performing at the Singapore National Stadium from March 2 to 4, 2024
  • It will be the only venue in Asia outside of Japan to host her world tour
  • The Singapore Sports Hub said that it is expanding its portfolio of world events to cater to regional audiences
  • It is part of the efforts the Government here is making to boost attendance at the sports hub since it took back ownership and management in December 2022
  • Other sporting and recreational events are lined up to cater to the wider community here as well

Singapore will be the only venue in Asia apart from Japan that she will be stopping over for The Eras Tour, and more than 200,000 fans here and in the region are expected to attend the shows.

Prices for the concert tickets will be released in due time. Information on the Singapore Sports Hub’s website shows that there will be a pre-sale for United Overseas Bank card members from July 5 at 12pm, and general sales will open on July 7 at 12pm through Ticketmaster.

Registration is needed for an access code to buy tickets for general sales and this will start on June 23 at 12pm and end on June 28 at 12pm.

Ticketmaster’s website states that people who have an account with it can buy only up to four tickets for each account.

The Singapore Sports Hub said in a press statement past midnight on Wednesday (June 21) that the concert will be “a significant milestone” for Singapore.

Kallang Alive Sport Management is expanding its portfolio of world events to include “a collection that is curated for regional audiences and with Singapore as the preferred destination”, it said.

Kallang Alive Sport Management is a wholly owned subsidiary of Kallang Alive Holding Co, which was incorporated by national sports agency Sport Singapore (SportSG).

It was set up to manage the Singapore Sports Hub from last December.

Mr Edwin Tong, Minister for Community, Culture and Youth, said in the press statement: “Since the Government took over the reins of the Singapore Sports Hub in December 2022, the Kallang Alive Sport Management team has actively curated a portfolio of world-class marquee events."

He added that sports fans can look forward to welcoming several top football teams to Singapore Sports Hub for the Singapore Festival of Football in July and August. This will feature German league champions Bayern Munich as well as English Premier League clubs such as Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur.

The Kallang facility will then host the very first Fiba Intercontinental Cup to be played in Singapore and Asia in September. Six international teams will compete in the basketball competition endorsed by Fiba, the world governing body for the sport.

“We also have (British rock band) Coldplay for six nights in early 2024," Mr Tong said.

He added that Taylor Swift’s concert is "an example of the calibre of events we are targeting to augment our offerings to Singaporeans and tourists alike”.

The Government took back ownership and management of the Singapore Sports Hub since Dec 9 last year, terminating a  public-private partnership  agreement 13 years ahead of time.

SportSG’s chairman Kon Yin Tong said then that the Government intends to make the sports hub more accessible to the broader community here in terms of sports, lifestyle, entertainment, leisure and social uses while maintaining its commercial sustainability.

Mr Tong said last year that the Government wanted more Singaporeans to go to the National Stadium, to develop an affinity with the stadium and its sporting infrastructure, which should be part of their day-to-day “lived sporting experience".

In the latest statement, he said that opening the sports hub to more activities for the community is also a priority and a series of sports and lifestyle events have been held since the start of the year, through “family-friendly activities such as the Stadium Waterfront Carnival and Celebrate Hari Raya@Stadium Roar”.

Mr Keith Magnus, chairman of Kallang Alive Sport Management, said that to have successfully secured Taylor Swift, “one of the top artistes in the world’s historic concert event”, in a multi-day concert is a landmark endorsement of the Singapore Sports Hub’s position as a “leading Asian destination for entertainment”.

Other upcoming events scheduled to take place in Singapore in the coming months include:

  • Hong Kong singer Jacky Cheung's 60+ Concert Tour – July 14 to 16, 21 to 23, 28 to 29 at the Singapore Indoor Stadium
  • Singapore Festival of Football – July 26 and 30 at the National Stadium
  • Fiba Intercontinental Cup 2023 – Sept 21 to 24 at the Singapore Indoor Stadium
  • Coldplay: Music of the Spheres World Tour – Jan 23 to 24, 26 to 27, 30 to 31, 2024, at the National Stadium

The public may visit the Singapore Sports Hub’s website for a full list of events and activities at https://www.sportshub.com.sg/events .

After YEARS of waiting, Taylor Swift is finally coming to Singapore on her The Eras Tour! A concert to remember; fans of all ages will be singing their hearts out. I know that many of us have grown up with her music, and this concert will be a blast through the past. Before we can enjoy ourselves, here are some tips you should note before coming to the Singapore concert!

P.S. As more information is released, we will update this article so bookmark this for easy access!

Your next adventure awaits! Subscribe to our weekly newsletter to explore breathtaking destinations, get insightful travel tips and itineraries!

General Tour Information

Taylor will be in Singapore from 2, 3, and 4 March 2024 and will continue on 7, 8, 9 March 2024 . She will be performing at Singapore's National Stadium (Singapore Sports Hub) for the 6 nights she's here! We wrote the address here for your convenience!

Address: 1 Stadium Dr, Singapore 397629

There are some amazing free events for Swifties in Singapore right now!

Prayer Spaces

It's hard to find prayer spaces within the area. So, we've collected a list of them right here in this article! You can find mosques, prayer spaces and even quiet corners. A tip, however, is to bring your prayer garments along as the quiet spaces won't have any available to you!

The most convenient is the Kallang Wave Mall Prayer Space which we have written down on where it is and how to get there in the article here!

Transportation - Train

Well, the Stadium MRT (CC6) is the CLOSEST MRT that you can take to to get to the National Stadium! Built right outside of Kallang Wave Mall, there are two exits that you can take, depending on which gate you're going to!

  • Exit A: National Stadium (Gates 1 – 5 & 18 – 23), OCBC Aquatic Centre, Kallang Wave Mall, Singapore Sports Museum, Sports Hub Library, Visitors Centre, Water Sports Centre, Singapore Indoor Stadium, Kallang Theatre
  • Exit B: National Stadium (Gates 6 – 17), OCBC Arena, Leisure Park Kallang

The merch stores are dotted all around the area so if one of the exits are crowded, go to the other one!

Note: Exit A will oftentimes be the most crowded right after the concert. You can head to Exit B or check out the rest of the ways to head home here!

Another MRT station you can head to is Kallang MRT (EW10) which is quite a walk away but a great place to head to if you live on the East-West line! There is a straight, sheltered walkway so you don't have to walk in the rain or in the sun.

P.S. From our experience at the Coldplay concert, they will funnel you towards the staircase up to the National Stadium outside, so just follow the instructions when you're there!

Transportation - Charter Buses

There are a bunch of pop-up bus services that can ferry up to 12 people to the same location!

Bussin is a service that you can use to book your bus tickets to the North, North-East, West, and East of Singapore. Each route will have a maximum of 5 stops. However, it's based on the demand for those areas. Each ticket now costs $9.99, inclusive of a refreshment and snack! Those who have bought a ticket will be put into the same Telegram group chat where you can get updates on pick-up points on the day itself. You can reserve your tickets here! NTU students can definitely make use of this function as it brings you all the way to Hall 16! There are a bunch of stops that they are able to bring you:

  • North: Yishun, Canberra, Sembawang, Admiralty, and Woodlands MRT stations
  • North-East: Serangoon, Hougang, Sengkang, and Punggol MRT stations
  • West: Jurong East, Lakeside, Boon Lay, and Pioneer MRT stations, and NTU Residential Hall 16
  • East: Bedok, Simei, Tampines, and Pasir Ris MRT stations

You can also try Wagon Asia too! Their tickets are available on Klook right here.

Their tickets are around $15.50 right now so grab them while you can and save the MRT waiting game for another day.

  • Jurong East MRT Station NS1/EW24
  • Woodlands MRT Station NS9/TE2
  • Serangoon MRT Station NE12/CC13
  • Dhoby Ghaut MRT Station NS24/NE6/CC1
  • Tampines MRT Station EW2/DT32

Pick-up point: Decathlon - Singapore Lab

#HHWTTip: If you're going for the other concerts such as Bruno Mars and ITZY, they have services for them too!

Transportation - Ride-sharing

From Grab to Gojek and even TADA, there are a bunch of apps that you should download beforehand! The Wi-Fi/Data at the Stadium can get quite bad so we recommend downloading these apps early on! You can schedule for a pick-up so it'll reduce the hassle of finding a ride after the concert. The apps will show you where the pick-ups are but if you're confused, the nearest pick-up point is right opposite of Exit B, Stadium MRT.

Transportation - Car

If you're driving, there are a few places you can park! The obvious two are the Singapore Sports Hub carpark or the Kallang Wave Mall carpark. Spots here fill up really fast and you'll also be fighting for spots with people who are coming to the mall just to eat or relax! Another place you can drop your card would be the nearby Kallang Leisure Park carpark ! You'll be near Exit B of Stadium MRT.

If you're willing to walk around 10mins, you can park at the Decatholon! The nearby Decathlon has a huge parking space where you can park and cross the road to head towards the stadium. We added the address here for reference!

Psst.. you can cross safely as there are set areas for pedestrian crossing!

Address (Decathlon Kallang): 230 Stadium Boulevard, Singapore 397799

Accommodation

Hotels are running out of room but there are still loads of options available for you! We've listed every hotel that you might want to book here:

  • 12 Hotels In Singapore With Halal Breakfast For Your Staycation
  • 6 Amazing Hotels & Serviced Apartments With A Kitchenette In Singapore
  • 11 Hotels In Singapore Below $250
  • 10 Singapore Hotels That Can Fit 4 People (Or More!) For Families & Groups Of Friends
  • 8 Hotels With Connecting Rooms For Your Next Family Staycation
  • 8 Hotels In Orchard Road Singapore For Every Budget

We highly recommend checking out hotels that are near the Circle Line MRT stations (Yellow - CC line) for hotels as Stadium MRT is on that line!

Tips and Tricks To Fully Enjoy Your The Eras Tour Concert Experience

Have a heavy lunch and snacks.

You can't bring food into the stadium, and yes there is a stall selling food inside but they're really pricey and not halal. So we highly recommend you to have a heavy lunch and snacks. There is a Kopitiam within Kallang Wave Mall where you can grab either Korean, Japanese or Yong Tau Foo. There are many fast food options too. However, there are a bunch of places you can grab food from here in our list!

If you're standing in line for the General Standing Admission, bring some snacks along with you and a plastic bag to throw your trash in. It's good to munch on sweets and other filling goodies as it can get quite sweaty and hot in the Standing area!

Here are some amazing halal food that's near National Stadium!

Bring a plastic water bottle to hydrate!

There are confusing rules surrounding what you can and cannot bring into the stadium. As a rule, no glass or steel bottles are allowed into the stadium. However, you can bring a plastic water bottle (recyclable or reusable) but it has to be empty! There are several water coolers around the stadium where you can grab a drink.

Water coolers (100 PLUS Promenade (Level 3)):

  • Between Gates 3 and 4
  • Between Gates 16 and 16

Water coolers (National Stadium):

  • Level 3: Behind Sections 109, 117, 122, 128, 134 and 142
  • Level 4: Behind Sections 410, 416, 435 and 441
  • Level 6: Behind Sections 608 and 643

Bring a portable fan and a power bank along

Everything You Need To Know For Taylor Swift's: The Eras Tour Concert In Singapore

It can get really hot and humid, especially if you're stuck in a queue where the rain has just ended and the sun has come out. Fainting can be quite common in concerts here so we recommend you to have a portable fan and a power bank to charge your fan and of course, your devices!

Exchange bracelets with other Swifties!

"So make the friendship bracelets, take the moment and taste it," And you should too! With Swifties coming in from all around Southeast Asia, it's an adorable and heart-warming concert tradition that brings us all together. These bracelets can have words, lyrics, album titles or phrases on the bracelets, such as the names of Swift's cats! Walk around and talk to others! Trade your bracelets with others and collect a unique, once-in-a-lifetime experience that will stick with you forever!

We hope this guide helps you prepare and have fun during the concert! Remember to stay safe and hydrate!

Due to the scale of the event, with a seating capacity of 330,000 attendees for six days, a staggering number of 10 million individuals have registered their interest to secure tickets for the concert series.

The tickets for the three new dates will be made available simultaneously with the original three dates.

This announcement is bittersweet for some Malaysian concertgoers because Coldplay is only performing for one night in Malaysia, and Taylor Swift has completely skipped Malaysia in her tour schedule.

Swift’s Malaysian fans would have to fork out money to watch her show in Singapore.

The loss of opportunity to attract international acts to perform in Malaysia allegedly due to conservatism and politics was also seen as a huge loss of revenue for the country.

Our neighbours in Singapore fared better in terms of concert events. British band Coldplay was originally set to perform in Singapore for four nights from 23 to 27 January 2024 before announcing a fifth show on 30 January.

The band then decided to add its sixth show on 31 January. It’s the first time in the stadium’s history that a music act will play for six nights.

Follow our news, recent searches, sound quality affects 'emotional connection' to artiste: experts on national stadium's lack of acoustic design, advertisement.

Singapore's National Stadium has received complaints about its poor sound at previous concerts. With fans desperate to score tickets to Coldplay and Taylor Swift performances there next year, CNA explores how sound quality affects the concert experience.

SINGAPORE: While the spotlight will be on  Coldplay and Taylor Swift next year when they each perform an unprecedented number of shows in Singapore, the National Stadium’s sound quality will take centre stage too.

The 55,000-capacity venue is no stranger to audio troubles at concerts.

In December 2022, complaints about the sound system during Mandopop singer Jay Chou’s concert made headlines. Older news reports have also highlighted the “murky” and “muffled” sound at the stadium’s concerts since local singer Stefanie Sun held the first pop gig there in July 2014.

The stadium’s sound woes have not deterred diehard fans – all six of Coldplay’s shows were sold out , while presale tickets for Taylor Swift were snapped up within three hours on Wednesday (Jul 5).

But the lucky ones who manage to snag tickets would have certain expectations for their concert experience, which will largely depend on how their favourite artiste sounds, said sound designers and engineers who spoke to CNA.

national stadium eras tour capacity

SOUND AFFECTS "CONNECTION" TO ARTISTE

Any artiste and their crew aim to “create a once-in-a-lifetime experience for the audience at an emotional and psychological level”, which is why sound is “so important”, said acoustics designer Edric Hwang.

“It is the single connecting factor between the performer and the audience. It’s what delivers the emotion and the experience. Visuals are what keeps us looking forward to the stage, but what we hear is what connects us to it,” he said.

“By compromising on sound quality, you compromise on the one thing concertgoers are there for – the emotional connection.”

Mr Hwang admitted Coldplay’s concert in January will be his first concert at the National Stadium, largely due to the “terrible reviews” he has heard about the stadium’s sound, not least from fellow music and audio professionals.

Echoing Mr Hwang, live sound engineer Mark Spencer added that the average audience member these days “wants to experience the artiste and their heroes more up close, and essentially clearer and more intimately”.

But that is hard to achieve in a larger venue, like the National Stadium, unless one stands right in front of the stage.

Mr Spencer, who has worked with various artistes on differing scales of shows in venues around the world, acknowledged that some concerts focus on the “spectacle of the performance” where “vibe and atmosphere” are key.

But at concerts of artistes who focus on songwriting, such as local singer JJ Lin whom Mr Spencer has worked with, he believes “a lot of that experience comes from what you hear as well, because you’re primarily there to hear the music”.

BETTER EQUIPMENT, BETTER SOUND?

To mitigate potentially poor sound quality, Mr Spencer said bands who can afford it bring along their own sound system on tours, rather than depend on what the venue has or what the concert promoter decides to rent.

But this culture, he noted, is more prevalent in Europe or the US.

Locally, concert promoters install a different sound system comprising different equipment for every show according to the artiste’s specifications, explained Mr Ross Knudson, director of concert promoter LAMC Productions.

International artistes do bring their own sound engineers, most of whom conduct a sound check a few hours before the concert “just to make sure everything is okay”, he said.

“It’s up to the artiste’s sound engineer to make it work to the best of their ability, along with the audio that is locally supplied according to the specifications in the artiste’s production rider.”

Plans to make Sports Hub a 'community icon' with more sports and lifestyle activities

Mr Hwang, whose expertise in sound and acoustic design is exclusive to professional music and audio production spaces, added that the equipment for every concert depends on the size of venue, estimated size of audience, type of performance and various technical factors.

However, he pointed out, the sound quality of any space is dependent on more than just the equipment. Equally important is the venue’s acoustic design – or lack thereof.

“The best equipment in the world won’t make a badly designed venue sound good, and vice-versa. The two play hand-in-hand,” he said.

“The only difference is that the equipment is a variable factor that can be controlled by the organiser’s team, whereas acoustics unfortunately cannot since it’s built into the venue.”

And the National Stadium’s fundamental issues with sound, Mr Hwang believes, cannot be “tackled entirely from an equipment perspective”.

Instead, the problem stems from the “foundational lack of acoustic design” for the stadium, he suggested, and suspects the acoustic design was “not heavily prioritised” since the stadium wasn’t built solely for concerts.

The National Stadium is a “great venue for large-scale events where sound is not as important as it is for concerts”, such as sports and community events, he said.

NOT DESIGNED WITH ACOUSTICS IN MIND

The Singapore Sports Hub, which oversees the National Stadium, states on its website that the stadium is “much more than a place for sporting events”.

It is the “nation’s centrepiece for sporting, entertainment, lifestyle and national events”.

Mr Spencer, however, believes the stadium’s design priority was “probably about seating capacity and how many seats they can cram in”.

“If you want to make money, then it’s about how many tickets you can sell. At the end of the day, I think a lot of these venues are not really prioritising audio quality, or even visuals or lighting,” he said.

Although he understands that the National Stadium’s seating capacity and infrastructure allows it to rent out the space for concerts and other events, this leads to vendors and sound engineers dealing with “an environment that’s not primarily for live sound”.

Sports stadiums like the National Stadium tend to be “very reverberant on purpose”, he added, because “you want to have the excitement of the crowd cheering and you're trying to give the home team the advantage”.

While audio manufacturers have designed predictive software to indicate where and how many speakers to place to achieve a certain sound, he noted that such software usually doesn't take into consideration the surfaces in the venue.

One way to mitigate the reflections in the National Stadium, he added, is to open up the roof. But that costs “quite a lot of money”, so there is “a tradeoff”.

'I paid S$3,683 for Blackpink tickets': Ticket scalpers back in business as international acts return to Singapore

Another factor that could affect sound quality is the temperature at a venue, Mr Spencer pointed out.

The heat at the National Stadium during K-pop band Blackpink’s concert in May made headlines, even though there were no reports of sound issues.

“Sound propagates through the air, like through waves. The warmer it is, the less dense the air; the colder it gets, the air is actually more dense, so it’s harder to (have) sound especially in the higher frequencies which is where all the clarity is,” he explained.

But in Singapore, it’s humid most of the time, he said. “If there’s a lot of moisture in the air, that also stops the propagation of sound.

“Essentially, if you really want good sound, you need to be near the speakers because then you have very direct sound,” he added.

“You (want to) try to give everybody direct sound rather than giving reflections. But in order for that to happen, you need to deploy more speakers, which is more budget and more setup time as well. It’s more manpower, more cost.”

ECONOMICS OF CONCERT BUSINESS

With internationally acclaimed artistes like Coldplay and Taylor Swift making Singapore a multi-day tour stop, the country is on its way to cementing its branding as an entertainment hub , tourism experts previously told CNA.

Such artistes are drawn to Singapore for various reasons including its state-of-the-art event facilities, easy connectivity to other Southeast Asian cities, stable governance and promotion efforts by the Singapore Tourism Board.

As such, despite the National Stadium’s limitations, turning it into a concert venue boils down to business, said LAMC’s Mr Knudson.

“Sports arenas are generally not designed for live music, but the economics of the concert business require them to be used because they can accommodate higher capacities.”

Selecting the venue is also about dollars and cents, as concert promoters who pay for the audio equipment for the artiste will have to balance between expenditure and profit, said Mr Spencer.

Illustrating the eye-watering cost of renting audio equipment, he noted that most companies charge per concert day with rehearsals costing an additional sum. Should artistes choose to put in temporary infrastructure, the cost of venue rental also increases.

“If we’re looking at something the size of Coldplay, the rental will be north of S$250,000 for the entire week just for the audio itself. Whereas if you’re looking at Indoor Stadium, that S$250,000 will give you your entire production – lighting, sound, video and whatever else,” he said.

Ultimately, a concert promoter’s venue choice is “very dependent” on the genre, the artiste and “especially the artiste’s fan base, the size of their fanbase and the expectations of the artiste and their fanbase”, added Mr Knudson.

He acknowledged that a venue is “critically important” to create “the vibe of the show” for the artiste and fans, as the sound and ambience of the venue will help make the show a success.

But in the end, the “most important element is always the artiste”, he added. “Fans will generally go wherever their favourite artiste performs.”

LOOK: Taylor Swift's concert venues in Japan and Singapore for her 'The Eras Tour'

By NICK GARCIA Published Jun 22, 2023 6:36 pm

There's no denying that Filipino Swifties found the non-inclusion of the Philippines in her The Eras Tour as "sad beautiful tragic" that it makes you want to sing, "I hope you think of [us too]."

Apparently, all you can do for now is, well, imagine what's it like to be amongst the crowd of the Asian leg of American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift's much-talked-about concert. And if this sounds like a good idea to you, then you've come to the right place.

Swift will first visit Tokyo Dome in the Japanese capital from Feb. 7 to 10 in 2024.

Tokyo Dome , which can accommodate up to 55,000 people, is among the country's best stadiums for sports, concerts, and other large-scale events.

It's part of Tokyo Dome City, which is a hub for amusement parks, restaurants, shopping, hotel and spa, and event halls.

As for Singapore, which Swift will visit on March 2 to 4 in 2024, it boasts of the National Stadium , which also has a 55,000-person capacity.

The stadium, according to its website, provides spectacular views of the waterfront and Singapore city skyline.

Features include a free-spanning dome, a retractable roof, and comfort cooling technology for spectators—design elements that complement Singapore’s humid climate.

Swift announced  The Eras Tour  in November last year, describing it as a journey through the musical eras of her career thus far. The ongoing first leg will run from March 18 to Aug. 5 at stadiums across the United States. It's set to conclude in August 2024.

The Philippines is not included in Swift's upcoming tour.
