Renaissance featuring Annie Haslam announce ‘In Gratitude’ Farewell Tour for Fall 2024

renaissance band tour history

Renaissance, the legendary symphonic rock band featuring Annie Haslam, will be back in the US playing select dates from October 17th through October 31st. This will mark 54 years since the formation of the band and its 16th consecutive year of touring since its reactivation in 2009.

Renaissance leader and vocalist Annie Haslam remarked that “We are very proud but sad to announce our ‘In Gratitude’ Farewell Tour. Where did the time go? Looking back over the years, I believe we have made history in the worlds of Progressive and Symphonic Rock.”

The upcoming shows will include stunning arrangements of “Ocean Gypsy,” “Northern Lights,” “Forever Changing,” “Mother Russia,” “Carpet of the Sun,” “Ashes are Burning” and other favorite classics. Ms. Haslam will be joined on stage by long-time musical associate Rave Tesar on piano, along with Mark Lambert on guitars/vocals, Geoffrey Langley on keyboards/vocals, Frank Pagano on drums, percussion/vocals, and John Galgano on bass.

Annie Haslam noted that “Performing with Renaissance since 1971 has been my whole life. I still love singing these unique, surreal, dramatic and romantic songs and pairing up with some of the finest orchestras in the world. All of this was born from the music of Michael Dunford, John Tout, Terry Sullivan and Jon Camp combined with the emotional and poetic words of Betty Thatcher. Our music has filled the hearts and minds of many thousands of fans around the world. It started for me, with a dream from my childhood that ended in this miracle called Renaissance! Rave Tesar, is an extraordinary man and musician I have worked with in my solo band since 1989 and with Renaissance since 2009. He has also been a very big help in keeping the band ‘alive’! Some very talented musicians have stepped into our band, and their devotion and hard work have added to the band’s touring longevity and personality.”

Renaissance is a band with a rich history unique unto themselves as progressive rock pioneers who rose from the ashes of the seminal UK rock band, The Yardbirds. Acclaimed for their unique blending of progressive rock with classical and symphonic influences, the band’s career has spanned fifty plus years spearheaded by the 5-octave voice of Annie Haslam and the masterful songwriting skills of Michael Dunford, John Tout, Jon Camp and Terry Sullivan. They are widely considered to be the band that most successfully and routinely utilized the sound of a full orchestra in their recordings.

The band has toured throughout the world and has performed at Carnegie Hall with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and at the Royal Albert Hall with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Royal Chorale Society. Renaissance had a top ten hit in the UK with their song “Northern Lights” that still demands airplay to this day.

I have watched several Renaissance concerts since 1976. My first one was in New York- Valley Stream auditorium. After that I was magically hooked to this amazing group. After moving to VA I have always tried to find their tour dates. I last saw them was in Alexandria, VA a few years ago. Can wait to see them again. And yes Ann is mine for ever.

Excellent! There were high artistry, elaborate tunes, heightened skill and good selections of songs at the concert. No gimmicks there. The size of the venue was adequate. I was so satisfied.

It is sometimes difficult to know how a band that have not toured the UK for some time will perform. There was also the added pressure of a live recording. However Renaissance put on a stunning live show. Annie Haslam's voice has stayed powerful, controlled and packs a punch. She takes you on a musical journey that at times sends shivers down your spine.

Whether music from the old albums with many of the favourites or from the last one Symphony of Light the band were tight and polished. When a band enjoys playing to the audience as much as Renaissance did and the feeling is reciprocal it makes for a special night. The venue Union Chapel further enhanced the experience of the evening. The acoustics of the church are great. This formation of Renaissance have played together for some time as they tour the States frequently and at times I closed my eyes to take in the music and felt a strong resonance with the original songs and live concerts I saw them at in the 70's and 80's. If you miss them this tour they have promised to come back. The climax of the concert with 'Ashes are Burning' was top draw and ended a great night out.

Renaissance – 50 th Anniversary: Ashes Are Burning – An Anthology Live In Concert

2019 was a year in which a number of legendary bands celebrated their 50 th anniversary. For example Yes, Jethro Tull and King Crimson were among the jubilees. The British symphonic rock group Renaissance also celebrated the occasion of five decades during this particular year, and like their venerable colleagues, they celebrated this happy fact with a series of concerts and the recording of a live CD/DVD/Blu-Ray to capture the festivities for posterity. In the case of Renaissance, the choice was made for a performance at the Keswick Theater in Glenside, Pennsylvania, in the United States on 12 th October 2019. Similar to their more famous colleagues, such a live recording will be released a little later. But Renaissance is the proverbial superlative: the album, entitled 50 th Anniversary: Ashes Are Burning – An Anthology Live in Concert , doesn’t see the light of day until two years later. It might have something to do with the difference in popularity with the aforementioned bands, or with financing: a crowdfunding campaign was needed to make the entire project feasible.

But that doesn’t do justice to the band. Although Renaissance has undeniably been less successful than its aforementioned contemporaries in a commercial sense, led by tireless singer Annie Haslam, now 74 years old, this certainly does not apply to the artistic content. In fact, if there is one band that really deserves the predicate ‘symphonic rock’, it’s Renaissance. Their version of progressive rock and fusion with orchestral symphonic music is of unparalleled beauty and appears to have lost none of its strength, many decades later.

This 2019 live recording with the Renaissance Chamber Orchestra is a brilliant tribute to the symphonic prog music (laced with folk, theatre and opera) that once graced the grooves of classics such as Prologue , Turn of the Cards , Novella , Scheherazade and Other Stories and, of course, Ashes Are Burning , from which the new live album takes its title.

There has been no new material for nine years, the latest studio album Il Grandine Vento dates back to 2013 (re-released in 2014 as Symphony of Light including bonus tracks). Despite this, the band still performs live regularly, this is already the third live album in succession with predecessors Live at the Union Chapel (2016) and A Symphonic Journey (2018) still relatively fresh in our minds. While the iconic 1976 Live at Carnegie Hall was of course the mother of all live shows for the group, founded in 1969 by Keith Relf and Jim McCarty, both ex-Yardbirds. The latter, now almost 80-years old, provides a surprise: he makes a guest appearance on two songs. Renaissance stands for beauty, melody and drama and we are served generous portions of this.

The show has the exuberant atmosphere of a festive event, which is clearly noticeable in the reactions of the devout audience. The concert starts with the melodic Carpet of the Sun in which Annie Haslam immediately shows that her voice still reaches the highest regions. Haslam is once again at her best in Ocean Gypsy ; the old hippie performs this lyrical and melancholy story of lost love in a truly wonderful way, there’s no shying away from the high notes. Running Hard is one of my personal favourites, partly due to the beautiful piano intro by musical director Rave Tesar. Midas Man , with a nice piece of a cappella, is one of the favourite ’70s songs of singer Haslam, as she herself admits during the introduction.

The second part of the show focuses on more elaborate pieces. Here the orchestra really shines and the arrangements now stand out even more. It opens with the light-hearted Opening Out , followed by Day of the Dreamer , another characteristic song with multi-harmony vocals by Annie and her merry men. Please note the melodic playing of bass guitarist Leo Traversa. Mystic and the Muse features a reverberant Haslam while A Song for All Seasons is a delightful classic. The closing Ashes Are Burning is one of the best songs ever and can be seen as a true magnum opus, next to Scheherazade . McCarty returns for a triumphant, if slightly shortened version of this iconic song from the eponymous 1973 album. And I even spot an electric guitar solo!

Annie Haslam’s soprano voice is still impressive, she still manages to reach the highest notes. But it takes audibly more effort and now and then her voice makes a trembling and fragile impression. That does not alter the fact that the spry septuagenarian is still unrivalled and with her classically trained voice has done ground-breaking work for many successors within and outside the genre. Moreover, she is an engaging personality on stage and a graceful front woman for her introverted group of accompanists.

The brass and strings of the ten-piece Renaissance Chamber Orchestra, formed especially for this tour, regularly steals the show, especially the horns add an extra dimension. No Prologue , Scheherazade or Mother Russia this time, the choice is tremendous with fourteen studio albums. Almost 100-minutes of pure, high-quality audio, spread over two CDs, a DVD and a Blu-ray in a nice box with an eight-page booklet – not bad. The video is perfect, with multiple cameras from different angles. It also shows the paintings of artist Haslam projected on the big screen. Moreover, the introductions and short stories by ringmaster Annie, dressed in one of her self-designed, multi-colour creations with a tasteful black velvet jacket, can now be heard in full, in contrast to the audio CD.

I had the privilege of seeing Renaissance perform live in April 2015 at the Boerderij in Zoetermeer, Holland, after more than forty years of absence. I witnessed an excellent show at the time and was able to tick off another item from my bucket list. I’m doing that again now; this live album is a great prelude to new gigs, whereas hopefully we won’t have to wait as long as before for a visit to the Netherlands.

Everything We Learned from Night One of Beyoncé’s Renaissance World Tour

Beyoncé Renaissance World Tour Opening Night - Stockholm

I t’s the moment everyone’s been waiting for: Beyoncé finally kicked off her Renaissance World Tour in Stockholm, Sweden , Wednesday night. This comes close to a year after the release of her seventh album, RENAISSANCE , a period during which she has rarely acknowledged the album with interviews or public performances of the new music, nor put out any music videos to accompany the songs. Nonetheless, the BeyHive was still buzzing with excitement on social media as they shared clips of the stage, the merchandise, the view from different VIP sections, and, most importantly, the artist performing the songs live for the first time.

Beyoncé is gearing up for a second night at the Friends Arena in Stockholm. As she gets ready to hit the stage, let’s take a look at what was revealed in the first show that might offer an indication of what could happen on the rest of the highly anticipated tour. A lot has already happened—from Bey herself addressing the lack of visuals to her celebration of the LGBTQ+ community, in keeping with the themes of the album.

Here’s everything we learned from night one of the Renaissance World Tour.

Beyoncé said not to rush a queen for music videos

If we haven’t learned by now, Beyoncé releases things when she is good and ready . This is her first solo album since 2016’s Lemonade , so we can’t act surprised that she told her fans to be patient and stop asking about the music videos. Her last solo albums, Lemonade , Beyoncé , and The Gift (a concept album for The Lion King ), all had visual components that included music videos for each song. This built up the expectation that RENAISSANCE would get the same treatment.

Beyoncé is online and knows her fans have been hounding her, and she has finally responded. During a break on the first night, a disembodied voice addressed the crowd as the words it spoke were displayed on stage: “Aww, you mad? Well, there’s no remedy for that, bitches… I know you’ve asked for the visuals. You’ve called for the Queen. But a Queen moves at her own pace, bitch. Decides when she wants to give you a f-cking taste. So get your fork and your spoon if you got one.”

She is cutting out some of her biggest hits to make room for the new album and deep cuts

Attendees at the concert in Stockholm filmed every moment for the world to see on social media, and many of Beyoncé’s fans were quite surprised by some of the songs she decided to perform. She opened the show with “Dangerously In Love” from her debut album of the same name and ran through a string of popular songs, both mainstream hits and fan favorites. At the opening night show, she also performed songs like “Rather Die Young,” “Flaws and All,” and “Black Parade,” which have not gotten much attention from Beyoncé in recent memory.

Beyonce - Rather Die Young 🎤 SINGGGGGG!!!! #RenaissanceWorldTour pic.twitter.com/MEZwAVYNWk — ram (@oyyram) May 10, 2023

Some of Beyoncé’s most popular songs, many of which she has made a point to perform on past tours, are notably missing from the set list. “Run The World” fans, do not worry: she still performs the song. But those who are fans of “If I Were a Boy,” “Single Ladies,” and “Halo,” a notorious closer for Beyoncé—as evidenced by the Homecoming concert film and her Formation World Tour— may be disappointed.

Beyoncé brought back the Les Twins, who have accompanied her on multiple tours and performances

The Les Twins, Laurent and Larry, were approached by Beyoncé years ago after a video of them dancing went viral and they appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show . They were invited to perform with Beyoncé at the Billboard Music Awards in 2011, and she took them on the road with her for the Mrs. Carter World Tour, her joint On The Run Tour with Jay-Z, and her Coachella performance in 2018 . Her fans were excited to see the Les Twins back on stage with her for this new tour.

Beyoncé performing Thique and Les Twins are officially back 😭 #RenaissanceWorldTour pic.twitter.com/zPKiGAPCjG — J (@wenttojarrett) May 10, 2023

It was gay as hell: An unabashed celebration of the LGBTQ+ community

In the lead-up to the album, Beyoncé dedicated the project to her Uncle Johnny, who battled HIV when she was young. He is referenced in the song “HEATED,” and in the outro of the song, Beyoncé takes on the role of MC at a ball (a queer dance party) where she starts “reading.” All of these influences took center stage at the Renaissance World Tour and will make a strong statement when it comes stateside in July, given the wave of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation being introduced across the country.

BEYONCÉ IS HEATED😭😭😭 #RENAISSANCEtour pic.twitter.com/ddL9s1ByUA — 𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗻𝘆🫧💚 (@beyoncegarden) May 10, 2023

One of the biggest displays of affection for her queer fans came even before the concert started. As concertgoers poured into the stadium, they were greeted with a fake TV error screen, but if you look closely, some of the colors are different. This error screen has the colors of the progress pride flag, which includes colors from the transgender pride flag, as well as brown and black to indicate the greater discrimination experienced by those members of the community. Twitter users joked, “Nashville is gonna be ready to arrest Beyoncé for this, lord Jesus,” referencing the state’s attempt to ban drag shows and broader attempts across the US to infringe on trans people’s rights.

Nashville is gonna be ready to arrest Beyoncé for this lord Jesus pic.twitter.com/jAz6ObNSEQ — 💫 (@heyjaeee) May 10, 2023

There is also a ball that happens in the show. Beyoncé makes space for her dancers to vogue and dance to her song, “PURE/HONEY.”

BEYONCÉ HOSTING A BALL IS SO WILD TO ME OMG pic.twitter.com/1JwnRMX8TR — Pocket (@islandthembo) May 10, 2023

Some people might recognize Honey Balenciaga from The House of Balenciaga, which appeared in season two of HBO Max’s Legendary . She was seen voguing on stage with the rest of Beyoncé’s dancers.

@legendaryvoguex HONEY BALENCIAGA @Honey. YOU WILL ALWAYS BE THE IT GIRL #RENAISSANCE ♬ original sound - Legendary Vogue X

As we’ve seen with other tours from major artists like Harry Styles, Taylor Swift, and the 1975, their fervent fan base will keep everyone up to date on all the song changes, new outfits, and surprises that these artists pull out of their bag of tricks on the road. As we’ve seen with Swift’s notoriously sold-out Eras Tour, her fans made sure to give people who couldn’t get tickets a chance to see the tour play out online. Based on how night one played out, it seems like Beyoncé’s fans will be doing the same for those of us stuck at home.

Correction, May 11: The original version of this story misgendered Honey Balenciaga. She uses she/her pronouns.
