We don't have hardly any passenger trains for commuting in Kentucky, so there's a certain novelty about taking a train trip. We have a few options for fun day trips you can take via train, including My Old Kentucky Dinner Train (located in Bardstown), which feeds you a gourmet meal on an excursion through the beautiful countryside, or the Big South Fork Scenic Railway (located in Stearns), which takes you deep into the gorge of the Big South Fork National River and Recreation area.

2. Ride this chairlift up for a breathtaking view.

The incredible Natural Bridge Skylift typically opens in spring, and it absolutely must go on your bucket list. The river is only 400 feet long, but is 437 feet deep. In the summer, they offer boat tours of the cave. Cumberland Falls is located in Cumberland Falls State Resort Park near Corbin. Shaker Village at Pleasant Hill is located in Harrodsburg; Kentucky's oldest town. This historic village was built by Shakers in the 1800s, but now it is a 3,000-acre preserve full of history. Out of the 260 structures that once stood at Pleasant Hill, only 34 now remain. However, you can tour these structures and even watch demonstrations to get a better feel for how the Shakers lived their lives. Each season brings new opportunities for the Bluegrass State to shine. Fall brings stunning foliage, winter brings dazzling snow flurries, and spring brings bright green landscapes. Summer's sunshine and warm temperatures make it the prime time to enjoy Kentucky's lakes, beautiful parks, and locally grown produce. While there's something special about each season, summer may be my favorite. We've put together a summer bucket list of eight spectacular things to do before the sunniest season of the year slips away.

1. Go camping at Lake Barkley

Summer is a great time to enjoy the fantastic campgrounds in the Bluegrass State. Lake Barkley offers a variety of campground accommodations from deluxe cottages to waterfront cabins. Many of Lake Barkley's accommodations offer fantastic amenities like playgrounds, pools, and beaches.

2. Take a waterfall hike to Eagle Falls

A waterfall hike is a superb addition to any summer bucket list. There are many stunning waterfall hikes in Kentucky, like the Eagle Falls Trail at Cumberland State Park. This 1.8-mile trail leads hikers to a 44-foot waterfall and swimming hole, the perfect destination on a hot summer day.

3. Visit Mammoth Cave National Park

Mammoth Cave is a great summertime destination. Mammoth Cave is the longest cave system in the world, but the area offers much more, including hiking, biking, and horseback riding. On a blistering summer day, a tour through the caves is a welcome break; its interior temperature is usually mild and cool.

4. Stay at Progress Park

Progress Park is an awesome 12-acre airstream resort in Louisville, Kentucky. The property has a lake where guests can enjoy swimming, kayaking, and canoeing. Doesn't this sound like a relaxing place to make summer memories?

5. Buy fresh summer produce at the Lexington Farmer's Market

Am I the only one who dreams of fresh peaches, heirloom tomatoes, and basil all winter long? When summer comes around, I make a beeline to a local farmers market for these treasures and more. There are more than 100 farmers markets across the state, including the Lexington Farmer's Market in Lexington, Kentucky.

6. Take a ride down the Awesome Lazy River

A river float is a fantastic way for kids and adults to beat the summer heat. The Awesome Lazy River in Shepherdsville, KY, offers guests a two-hour float down the Salt River, a natural river. Children must be five years old to participate, and the company provides life jackets.

7. Enjoy farm fresh fruit and flowers at Jackson's Orchard and Nursery

Visiting a Kentucky orchard is a fantastic way to get fresh farm produce and flowers. At Jackson's Orchard and Nursery in Bowling Green, Kentucky, visitors can buy fresh peaches and pick zinnias and sunflowers. The on-site concession stand serves homemade peach ice cream, peach salsa and chips, and fried peach and cherry pies, in addition to other tasty treats. A playground opened at the orchard in 2024.

8. Attend a Louisville Bats baseball game

Attending a baseball game with popcorn, peanuts, and a hot dog is a quintessential summertime activity. The Louisville Bats is a minor-league team that plays throughout the summer. What a fun, family-friendly activity!

1. Visit the Red River Gorge

The Red River Gorge is one of the most beautiful areas in Kentucky. It is a lush part of the Daniel Boone Forest with unique natural rock bridges, and rivers perfect for rafting or canoeing. It is a favorite spot among the native residents.

2. Check out the flood wall murals of Paducah

Take a walk or a drive down Washington Street, Jefferson Street, and Water Street in Paducah and you will see some amazing artwork. Local artists painted the floodwalls in Paducah with vividly colored, life-like settings and scenarios. From riverboats to men at work, the Kentucky Derby, and trains, the flow of the artists knew no bounds. They turned chunks of concrete into astounding works of art free for public viewing.

3. Indulge in some Kentucky Hot Brown

This is a delicious open-face sandwich that initially started at the Brown Hotel in the early 1900s. It has toast covered in turkey with bacon, tomatoes, and a creamy cheese sauce and literally melts in the mouth when prepared correctly. The one shown is available at Ramsi’s Cafe on the World on Bardstown Road in the Highlands.

4. Spend the night in a castle

Visit Castlepost, a medieval castle B&B at 230 Pisgah Pike in Versailles . The outside looks to be a castle fit for a fairytale prince or princess. Inside, visitors experience the best of everything, from food to amenities and accommodations.

5. Take a hike up Black Mountain

Black Mountain is the highest point in Kentucky at 4,145 feet, and offers a breathtaking view. There is not much else that needs to be said, as the surroundings say it all.

6. Take a riverboat ride

The port towns were once the trade centers of Kentucky, as river trade was profitable. River life was busy and booming. There are several places you can catch a riverboat ride on the Ohio River, including BB Riverboats in Newport and the Belle of Louisville in Louisville.

7. Try out Thoroughbred Pie

This is an alternative to the Derby Pie where walnuts are used instead of pecans and a little bourbon is tossed into the mix. It provides a real melt-in-the-mouth experience.

8. Embark upon the Kentucky Bourbon Trail

Take a stroll through Kentucky’s bourbon history in historic Bardstown or one of the other wonderful stops along the Kentucky Bourbon Trail . You will visit distilleries, sample bourbon, and see some of our longest-standing aging operations. It may not sound exciting, but it is interesting, especially if you like bourbon.

9. Eat some Derby Pie

Derby Pie is the official pie of the Kentucky Derby. It is basically a pecan pie but adds dark chocolate to create an entirely unique flavor. Served warm with a dollop of whipped cream, vanilla bean, or butter pecan ice cream, this is just to die for.

10. Tour Mammoth Cave

This is Kentucky’s addition to the Seven Wonders of the World and is well worth the visit to 1 Mammoth Cave Parkway in Mammoth Cave . This underground wonder is the world's longest cave system offering a unique collection of seemingly new worlds beneath the ground. Cool, clear waters, unique creatures, and sparkling cave formations, and preserved from the taint of civilization.

11. Try Kentucky Bourbon

You should really try Kentucky Bourbon when in the Bluegrass State. Bourbon snobs say it is different than any other bourbon you might experience.

12. Visit the Cumberland Gap Historic Park

Bask in the beauty of nature and a lot of Kentucky history at this gorgeous preserved area on US 25E South in Middlesboro. You can see the old Hensley Settlement near the Cumberland Caves. It is a nice place to visit and ponder the previous occupants in a nature-rich setting.

13. Visit the Kentucky Horse Park or farms

The many amazing thoroughbred and saddlebred farms in or around the Lexington and Shelbyville area are a true adventure to visit. You cannot come to horse country and not see the horses in one setting or another. At the Kentucky Horse Park and some of the local farms you can ride a horse yourself, watch them run free or during training. The entire area is beautiful and filled with the spirit of Kentucky.

14. Watch for a moonbow at Cumberland Falls

Cumberland Falls is one of the few places in the world that has proper atmospheric conditions for the amazing moonbow. They are truly a beautiful sight to behold and can create a perfect memory of natural beauty.

15. Visit the Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory

Located at 800 W. Main in Louisville, the Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory can take you out to the ballgame via memorabilia and photographs. Visitors also get to tour the factory and see how ball bats are made.

16. Visit the Corvette Museum

If you happen to be passing near Bowling Green, stop by 350 Corvette Drive and check out the Corvette Museum . Every Corvette being driven is made in Bowling Green, and most Corvettes ever made are housed in the museum. If you are a car fan, this is a must-stop-and-see. If not, it's still kind of cool!

If you can get tickets to visit one of the local arenas during a Kentucky, Louisville, WKU or EKU ball game, you will be amazed by the spirit of the fans. Kentucky sports fans are truly passionate about their teams.

It is the drink of the Kentucky Derby. Some people don’t care for them, but they remain the iconic beverage for this popular annual event.

When you ask an average American (or anyone else, really) what comes to mind when they think of Kentucky, most people will tell that the first thing they envision is horse races, bourbon, cowboy hats and maybe boots. What else? Not much. Because the majority think that Kentucky is rather plain. Ouch.

But let me tell ya. In reality, Kentucky is a truly unique state with some rare world wonders.

Lately, I was reminiscing about my one long year in Kentucky  which was full of some cool weekend trips. During that time, I ventured to the narrow country roads near the border with West Virginia, chased lunar rainbow in Cumberland Falls and even explored beaches and swam in the lakes in the far Southwest of the state.

These days, while being stuck at home, I wanted to create this post. And share some of my best trips in beautiful Kentucky. Thus, I am absolutely sure that a lot of travelers will enjoy them as well.

1. a getaway to bardstown, kentucky – for the bourbon, wine & antiquity   .

Bardstown always makes it on the list of “the most beautiful small towns in America”. And there is a reason for that. This town is replete with elegant architecture, posh B&Bs, antique shops, quaint restaurants, tree-shaded streets, bourbon distilleries, and romantic treehouses .

Most travelers visit Bardstown on their Kentucky Bourbon Trail adventure. Here, you are able to immerse in all things whiskey and, if you want, dedicate the entire weekend to bourbon only. Yet, besides bourbon, there is a variety of other things to do and places to explore. 

During a year when I lived in Lexington, I have been to Bardstown a dozen times. And each time I had something new to discover. 

WHAT TO DO IN BARDSTOWN, KY 

Even if bourbon is the last thing in the world that interests you, still, it will be very fascinating to go on a distillery tour. There are 9 distilleries to choose from in Bardstown and many more around it. Each distillery offers tours and tastings and gives you a glimpse into an important piece of Kentucky history.

Visit Heavens Hill Heritage Center  or Oscar Getz Museum to learn about the history of Kentucky bourbon. At  Bardstown Bourbon Company,  take their Shaken & Stirred cocktail class where you’ll learn how to mix your drinks. And in  Lux Row Distillery to go on a tour and visit their brickhouse.

Barton 1792 , only a few minutes walk from downtown, is an old distillery working until this day and offering free tours and tastings. Willett Distillery also offers a great tour that covers the process of making bourbon – from distillation to filling the barrels. 

The Blind Pig Bourbon Market has a nice selection of bourbon, souvenirs, and gifts related to whiskey. 

If you feel you got enough bourbon, why not sample locally-made wine? Forest Edge Winery , Springhill and McIntyre’s Wineries offer an excellent selection of wines, great decor, atmosphere, and service. By the way, Forest Edge is located very close to a famous Jim Beam distillery , if you plan to cover these two places in one trip.

To soak up some history, you definitely need to visit My Old Kentucky Home State Park , famous for the historic plantation that inspired America’s first composer Stephen Foster. In summer, if visiting from June 11th to August 13th, there is a Broadway-style show on the grounds that tells the tale of Foster’s story. 

Additionally, don’t forget to pop into one of the four most important museums devoted to the Civil War . 

Among other fantastic things to do in Bardstown to keep you busy during the weekend getaway in Kentucky are:

– My Old Kentucky Dinner Train – a relaxing train ride with dinner through the Kentucky hillside;

– Self-guided walking tour through the historic downtown; 

– Old Talbott Tavern – a historic restaurant & bar which became a staple of classic Southern hospitality and decor. 

SHOULD YOU STAY IN BARDSTOWN OVERNIGHT?

Bardstown is only 1 hour away from Lexington and 45 minutes away from Louisville, so yeah, you can easily stay in one of these cities. However, for a rare opportunity to unwind in a grand old place, look into one of many charming Inns or Bed & Breakfasts.

2. A TRIP TO THE LAND OF LINCOLN & MAMMOTH CAVES – For History & Nature 

With this getaway idea, I am inviting you to go on a weekend trip from anywhere in Kentucky to Mammoth Caves National Park. However, before you get to the park, visit a few sites on the way that tell the story of an extraordinary man Abraham Lincoln.

WHAT TO DO ON THIS GETAWAY

From Bardstown, take a New Heaven road (or Rte. 31E) to Hodgenville. It meanders through a deep forest to the Boyhood Home of Abraham Lincoln . In this historical place, a reconstructed log cabin by Knob Creek in a grassy valley gives a great perspective of Lincoln’s childhood life.

A few miles south the drive enters the small town of Hodgenville , which carefully preserves the history of Lincoln. The Lincoln Museum has exhibits that portray Lincoln’s life. By the way, in our experience, it is a wonderful museum where you get a feel of going back in history and learning a lot.

The town of Hodgenville has a very short but nice Main Street with a bronze statue of Lincoln overlooking the town square.

South of town, a barbecue restaurant “Lincoln Jamboree” offers great live shows with talented singers and musicians. Not far from it is the Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historic Park –  a beautiful countryside park with a replica of the original log cabin where the great president has been born in 1809.

TIP : Pack lunch with you and have at the picnic area in the park.

Visiting Lincoln-related sites and stopping for lunch can take a few hours of your time. So you can leave the Mammoth Caves for the same or the following day. 

If you are interested in exploring the outback and seeing unique Australian wildlife, make a stop at the Kentucky Down Under Adventure Zoo . It is a hidden gem place with a variety of unique animals that you won’t see anywhere else (like the red kangaroo and blue-tongued skink.)

The nearby Hidden River Cave & Cave Museum is a worthwhile adventure for everyone who would like to venture into an underground cave, zip line, and rappel. Diamond Caverns Resort in Park City , adjacent to Mammoth Cave National Park, besides beautiful and quiet accommodation, is also offering tours that feature thousands of stalactites, stalagmites, and flowstone formations.

3. A PEACEFUL GETAWAY TO VERSAILLES – For Horses, Farms & Country Roads

Known for some of the most picturesque countrysides and iconic centuries-old rock fences, Versailles, in the west of Lexington, is definitely one of Kentucky’s most charming towns. It is a true hidden gem that is perfect for unique girls’ weekend getaways , couples retreats, and simple 

Plan a trip here and go on a scenic drive from Lexington to Frankfort. I advise you to take an Old Frankfurt Pike Road towards Frankfort but return to Versailles to stay overnight in one of the most charming country inns. 

WHAT TO DO IN VERSAILLES 

First of all, plan to visit a horse farm. Versailles is surrounded by a rich landscape and has incredibly beautiful horse barns and properties. Many of the horse farms are homes to thoroughbreds that often win in the Kentucky Derby.

Go on a guided tour in Three Chimneys Farm or WinStar Farm . They offer custom and guided group tours on the thoroughbred industry and let you get a glimpse of the daily life of each horse.

On the scenic McCracken Pike road, from Versailles to Millville, you can visit the oldest distillery in Kentucky Woodford Reserve . It offers two specialized tours. One focuses on the architecture and history and another one solely on the bourbon-making process. Those who are visiting Kentucky from out of state and plan to be in Lexington only, have a great opportunity to learn about the bourbon production at the distillery in Versailles.

In the opposite direction on another picturesque road, is a Wildside Winery , in case you are up for wine tasting. Not far from the winery is Irish Acres Gallery of Antiques – an old converted schoolhouse full of antiques. There is a lot to look at and have a meal in a beautifully decorated restaurant downstairs.

If visiting from May to November, everyone in your family should love  Eckert’s Orchard . It reminds more of an agriculture centered amusement park with a lot of attractions. There, depending on the season, you’ll find strawberries, peaches, blackberries, over 30 varieties of apples, and lots of pumpkins.

SHOULD YOU STAY IN VERSAILLES?

Oh yes! While Lexington has a lot of options for any budget, a charming suburb Versailles with grassy fields has incredibly gorgeous farmhouses and bed & breakfasts.

Take a look at some of them: Charred Oaks Inn  or Montgomery Inn B&B . Also, The Kentucky Castle is a wonderful choice for a romantic getaway in every way.

4. a city getaway to louisville, kentucky .

The largest city in Kentucky, famous for the world-known Kentucky Derby and bourbon, has a lot to offer to couples visiting on a romantic getaway.

Being located at the intersection of the midwest and south of the country, many travelers often avoid Louisville, not knowing this city is actually really welcoming, super hipster and artsy, and great for active dates.

Even though Louisville is big, it’s also pretty compact and most attractions can be found in the Downtown area. No need to have a car since it is easy to get around on foot.

WHAT TO DO IN LOUISVILLE 

Go for a saunter in the Waterfront Park and cross to Indiana through one of many bridges. There is a bike rental by Big Four Bridge offering a range of bicycles if you feel like cycling around.

Wander through the gorgeous and historically rich part of Downtown – “Museum Row” on West Main Street. This street is home to nearly 10 attractions located next to each other and surrounded by Victorian cast-iron facades combined with striking contemporary architecture. As Louisville is built around the river, there is an opportunity for paddleboarding and canoeing. Endless Summer Paddle in Thruston Park rents out paddleboards, offers tours on the Ohio River, and sells coffee and baked goodies.

Don’t miss a walk (or bike ride) to Old Louisville where you’ll find a huge collection of historic Victorian houses where people live until this day. By the way, this neighborhood has some gorgeous Airbnbs ( like this one ) for a romantic stay. 

After spending some time in Old Louisville, why not go to the New one? New Louisville or as it is also called East Market District, or simply Nulu has cool bars, restaurants, breweries, art galleries, and quirky shops. This neighborhood is small but with the number of establishments, you can easily get lost and spend there hours.

Pop into Goodwood Brewing Co for great crafted beer and delicious food. Royals Hot Chicken is a fantastic place for a chicken meal. The nearby Quills Coffee Firehouse with Hi-Five Doughnuts are for those with a craving for cappuccino and sweets. But really, these are not the only places where to eat.

Nulu neighborhood has some of the best Louisville restaurants for lunch and dinner, coffee, and brunch. Just walk around and explore your options.

If the only city you get to visit in Kentucky will be Louisville, don’t forget to sample local bourbon. Some distilleries like Evan Williams Bourbon Experience , Rabbit Hole distillery , Angel’s Envy or  Old Forester  offer entertaining tours and tastings. Kentucky Peerless Distilling is a place for sampling some moonshine.

5. A LONG WEEKEND GETAWAY TO COVINGTON, KENTUCKY 

Covington is the northernmost town in Kentucky that borders Cincinnati. This town is small but cozy. It is mainly known for historic neighborhoods, numerous art galleries, and popular events like Mainstrasse Oktoberfest, Mardi Gras, The Original Goetta Festival, and others. 

Escape here to listen to great jazz in Dee Felice Cafe , catch a show at the Madison Theater or a classical music concert at the Kentucky Symphony Orchestra , and   taste traditional German food in Wunderbar . And another reason to visit Covington is Cincinnati where you can get by crossing a Suspension Bridge. 

WHAT TO DO IN COVINGTON

Before we go through the list of attractions in Covington, here is one detail. Getaway to this destination will suit all types of travelers but most of all families with kids. And for many reasons.

First of all, before arriving here, if driving from Lexington (and even Louisville with a quick detour), make a stop at the Ark Encounter .  This is a unique exhibit with a replica of Noah’s Ark which was built according to the dimensions in the Bible.

It is definitely a great place to expand your knowledge about the Ark and life on it during the flood. Even if you are not religious, this project will surely impress! If visiting with family, you can literally spend an entire day here.

Once in Covington, make sure to stop by a beautiful Devou Park. It’s a nice spot for a breezy walk and a wonderful view of downtown Cincinnati. For crafted beers on tap, go to Braxton Brewing Company which welcomes everyone. Besides beer, they have food, occasional live music, tours and a rooftop bar with pretty views.  

Foodies and history lovers will definitely appreciate a  cultural food tour of a beautiful historic neighborhood MainStrasse Village.  And, kids will enjoy the Aquarium , although I personally think that Cincinnati Zoo has more to offer (and for a lower price.)

6. A RIVERSIDE GETAWAY TO MADISON, INDIANA

This can be a cool getaway for couples from Kentucky who also would love to combine it with a road trip. Madison lies at the heart of the Ohio River Scenic Byway , so you could easily see a few other pretty towns as well. Yet, at the end of the day, return to Madison and spend a night in one of the romantic B&Bs.

If you have been to Mansfield, Ohio , then you’ll find a few similarities between these two towns.

WHAT TO DO IN MADISON 

This charming historic part of Madison is famous for three things. First – for historic houses such as Sullivan House , Lanier Mansion , and Schofield House . Second – for Main Street full of restaurants, artsy shops, chocolate and coffee places, and antique stores. And third – for the feel. 

Madison’s cozy streets with riverfront and downtown area are full of romantic charm. There is a special spirit in this town that makes you feel comfortable and relaxed from the first few minutes.

During your romantic escape, visit one of the wineries (as Thomas Family Winery , Lanthier Winery , and Vineyards Estate Winery ,) go for a walk along the Milton Madison Bridge from Madison to Milton Kentucky, get a relaxing massage  (don’t forget to schedule an appointment) and treat yourself with handmade artisan chocolates at Cocoa Safari Chocolates .

Also, head to the nearby Clifty Falls State Park for amazing hiking trails and outstanding views.

Weekend Getaways Near Louisville, KY

7. a trip from kentucky to corydon, indiana – for wine, history, music & art.

The small town of Corydon, which became the first capital of Indiana at the beginning of the 19th century, at first sight, doesn’t seem to have a lot to offer. While this is true that the town itself is somewhat unremarkable, there are still a few attractions that can keep you busy during the entire weekend.

Before you even get to Corydon, if driving from Louisville, make a stop at the Turtle Run Winery . There, you’ll find homemade wines, live music on weekends (weather permitting), and a great ambiance.

Once in Corydon, spend some time in town. There, go on a quick walk and visit Corydon Capitol State’s historic site (basically Indiana’s birthplace.) Its location is near the town square. Nearby are the Battle of Corydon park to learn how our forefathers lived and Constitution Elm – a place where the Indiana Constitution was drafted.

Among other must-visit places are glassmaking craftsmen in Zimmerman Art Glass Shop , Cave Country Canoes , and Corydon Jamboree – an amazing venue to enjoy live country and gospel music.

Also, if you have time, visit a nearby town Leavenworth which is famous for its peaceful atmosphere and mind-blowing views of the river. The Overlook Restaurant is that place where you can enjoy the food and spectacular views.

Since all of these attractions are located close to Louisville, you may want to go there on a day trip. We were visiting on a day trip from Lexington and felt like we could easily spend another day in the area.

8. COUPLE’S GETAWAY TO BRANDENBURG, KENTUCKY – For Romance & Luxury 

One of the reasons why I wanted to include Brandenburg on my list is an elegant romantic Inn that is a great vacation spot near Louisville. This small luxury-style B&B in a farming community is not only a wonderful place to stay but to unplug and have a peaceful weekend.

In fact, Brandenburg is only 25 minutes drive to Corydon mentioned in the getaway above. So if you feel like combining these two destinations on the same weekend trip, please do so. However, I still wanted to make them separate getaways because the amount of activities is endless. 

THINGS TO DO IN BRANDENBURG, KENTUCKY 

There isn’t much to do in the town but there are plenty of activities on the farm and in nearby areas. On the farm, you can go fishing, boating, swimming in one of the ponds, feeding the goats and alpacas, or hanging out at the pool all day long. 

Other things to do in the Brandenburg area are a famous Fort Knox with nearby Boundary Oak Distillery and Sounders Springs Nature Reserve . They are only a 30-minute drive away. 

To the north of town, around 15 minutes across the border to Indiana, is Squire Boone Caverns – an interesting place for both children and adults. Here, you can go on a guided tour around underground caverns, and visit a small theme park with pioneer-era buildings and hayrides. The caverns, a complex of rooms and passageways contain rimstone dams, impressive stalactites, and stalagmites.

Brandenburg as a town has a River Front park with a few walking trails and a Jailhouse which was turned into a pizza parlor (call ahead and book a jail cell for lunch or dinner) where you can dine and have a tour of the historic jailhouse (very interesting experience!)

9. A WEEKEND TRIP TO BLOOMINGTON & MONROE LAKE – For a College Town, Culture & Outdoor Adventure

Here is another weekend getaway from Kentucky to Southern Indiana which, by the way, is among the most romantic getaways in the Midwest . This time I offer you to go on a trip to an energetic college town, known for its wide selection of shops, restaurants, beautiful architecture, art, and local wines.

The main reason why Bloomington is famous is because of the historically rich Indiana University. The campus with ivy-draped halls and dormitories is simply gorgeous. It has quaint trails for walking and many areas to relax and learn about history.

For example, some fascinating historic places to visit are the IU Auditorium and Indiana University Art Museum . The first one is famous for murals on the walls and ceilings as well as various performances. And the second one boasts many works of Picasso, Rodin, Warhol, and other artists. If you happen to visit in April, the campus hosts a bicycle race called the Little 500. 

However, Indiana University is not the only reason why to visit this area.

Just north of town on State Road 37, you’ll find and oldest winery in Indiana Oliver Winery . Besides their award-winning wines, wine tastings, local artisan music, and lovely views you can also take a stroll around the lake. It is a lovely area to enjoy time with friends and family outdoors on their convenient seating.

Southeast of Bloomington lies Monroe Lake . This large reservoir has lake cabin rentals and many popular spots for swimming, camping, and boating. Hardin Ridge and Paynetown  recreation areas are the most popular for those who would like to get closer to nature.

OTHER PLACES TO VISIT IN BLOOMINGTON AREA:

If you come not for a day but for a weekend getaway, you’ll have more time to explore other places in the Bloomington area. And there are quite a few of them. You can even go on a road trip through Southern Indiana.

So, before leaving Bloomington, make a stop at the Tibetan Mongolian Buddhist Cultural Center. It’s a peaceful educational place excellent for meditation and achieving a calm state of mind.

Afterward, follow a scenic State Road 46 toward Nashville . Dipping through the hills and hollows of rural Brown County, it opens up beautiful views.

Nashville  is a small town full of antique shops, craft stores, and art galleries. Stop at the Big Woods the Original  and taste their famous beer cheese pretzels, chicken asparagus sandwich, and burgers. Besides those, they also have very good soups of the day, pizza, fried rice, and more dishes on the menu. 

Brown County Playhouse and Melchior Marionette Theater (located next to each other) are nice small community places for concerts, shows, and performances. 

If visiting this area in June, expect to see the Bill Monroe Memorial Bean Blossom Bluegrass Festival. It is the oldest festival in the world dedicated to Monroe’s bluegrass songs.

Besides Nashville, visit T.C. Steele State Historic Site , Brown County State Park , Yellowwood State Forest , and ghost town Story .

WHERE TO STAY IN BLOOMINGTON & NEARBY:

Depending on the goal of your trip, I personally would love to recommend a few different places.

Fourwinds Lakeside Inn – a gorgeous property with fantastic views of Monroe Lake, a convenient location, and an excellent marina atmosphere. Suits families with children and couples.

Grant Street Inn – a quaint and classy Inn within walking distance of downtown, a farmers market, and many restaurants. This is a privately owned hotel, therefore you can expect to have a very unique experience.

Wampler House Boutique B&B  – this is a romantic extravagant Inn in the heart of Bloomington downtown. Everything feels just right here and you’ll surely have an unforgettable stay!

For adventure seekers, I highly advise checking a country bed-and-breakfast Story Inn . It is a bit pricey but very unique and quaint! The Inn offers fine dining, lodging, and events throughout the year. If you can’t stay overnight, at least pay a visit during the day, have a meal, and walk around the area. It is surrounded by beautiful countryside.

15 Best Day Trips from Lexington Ky

Lexington is the second largest city in Kentucky and arguably the most interesting and authentic city to visit in the state. Found just an hour to the west of Kentucky’s largest city, Louisville, and just half an hour away from the state capital of Frankfort, Lexington is perfectly located to make for a fantastic base from which to explore the rest of the state.

The surrounding region is rich in local culture, and aside from the large cities nearby, there are many small-town communities to explore, each with their own unique history and attractions to offer visitors.

Many of the best bourbon distilleries in the United States are located within a few miles of Lexington, including the world-famous Wild Turkey brand. Even if you aren’t much of a drinker, a tour of a whiskey factory is an interesting cultural experience which will help you to see how the drink has become so embedded in local life and history.

Further afield, there are excellent day trip opportunities from Lexington to nearby national forests, to the birthplace of Abraham Lincoln and across state borders into nearby Ohio, Indiana, West Virginia and Tennessee.

1. Louisville

Louisville is the largest city in Kentucky, and it’s located around 80 miles away from Lexington. That makes it the perfect place for a day trip, and the perfect opportunity to visit the many attractions of this bustling metropolis.

The city is built on the beautiful banks of the Ohio River and in summer you can even take a classic steamboat cruise along the water. This is a historic place and there are plenty of museums in Louisville to keep you occupied for the day.

Baseball fans can visit the Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory to see the world’s largest baseball bat, and learn more about the city’s long association with this popular American sport.

There are plenty of distilleries in the city, including the Barton 1792 brand. If you visit in May and you might be lucky enough to catch the Kentucky Derby, a world famous horse race that meets in Louisville once a year.

2. Frankfort

Frankfort is around 40 miles away and lies halfway between Louisville and Lexington. This is a small city, but despite being just a fraction of the size of its two much larger neighbours, Frankfort is the state capital.

This is one of the oldest settlements in Kentucky and the city is steeped in local history, from pre-European times to its modern role as the seat of state government.

Frankfort has a sense of grandeur that’s captivating to experience, from the elegant designs of the grand Capitol Building to the charming, leafy streets of the city centre. This is the epitome of Kentucky, and it makes for a great day trip from Louisville.

3. Lawrenceburg

Lawrenceburg is just a half hour away by car, and this small Kentucky town makes for a great day trip that’s close to the city.

This is a must-visit destination for bourbon fans or for anyone looking to immerse themselves in true Kentuckian culture, because Lawrenceburg is home to the famous Wild Turkey Bourbon Whiskey.

This was one of the first places to be settled by Europeans in the region, and it has long held a place at the heart of the state’s history. Walking through the streets of the centre will take you back a hundred years, while a visit to the Wild Turkey distillery will take you on a journey through the history of one of the most famous drinks in the country.

4. Danville

While other cities in Kentucky might claim to be the most historic in the state, Danville can genuinely say that it’s a city that was here when it all began.

This was one of the first European-settled cities in the region, with origins dating back as far as 1784. Danville was also at the centre of local history and politics for years, until it was superseded by Frankfort, Louisville and Lexington in the 20th century.

In Danville, you can see the first state capitol building, the first state courthouse and the first state post office. It’s a great day trip for those looking to find out a little bit more about Kentucky history.

5. Versailles

Named for the famous French palace and city, of course, the small town of Versailles isn’t quite as grand or as elegant as the famous French town, but it is every bit as delightful in its own unique way.

Just 15 miles to the west of Lexington city centre, Versailles is the heart of both bourbon and horse country in the state. You can visit the famous local distillery run by the Woodford Reserve Brand, and many of the local thoroughbred horse farms that have produced many winners through the years.

6. Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park

The Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park is a protected area that has preserved the birthplace of one of the most famous presidents in US history.

This historical park is on the Sinking Springs Farm, where Abraham Lincoln was born and lived until he was two years old. Here you can find an intriguing museum that brings to life what the farm would have been like when Abraham Lincoln was born.

Down the road, you can also visit Knob Creek Farm, which is also protected within the historic park grounds. This is where Abraham Lincoln moved when he was just two years old and where he spent the next few years of his childhood.

Located an hour and a half to the south of Lexington, the small community of Corbin is a pilgrimage site for anyone who enjoys a meal of Kentucky Fried Chicken.

This is the home of KFC, where you can visit the Harland Sanders Cafe and Museum. The museum is dedicated to the history of fried chicken and tells the tale of Colonel Sanders and his fast-food empire which swept the world.

You can even eat in the KFC restaurant on site, which is steeped in fried chicken history.

8. Natural Bridge State Park

The Natural Bridge State Park is found to the east of Lexington and offers visitors a great day trip to the great outdoors.

This area of wild landscapes and forests is full of excellent hiking trails that will immerse you in the beautiful scenery. The highlight is the natural bridge that gives the state park its name.

This enormous sandstone bridge has been carved out by forces of nature that have left a huge, hollow gap in the rock. The gap is 20 metres across and more than 20 metres in height, and it’s a stunning sight to see.

9. Red River Gorge Geological Area

The Red River Gorge Geological Area is found in the same area of wilderness as the Natural Bridge, to the east of Lexington.

This rocky region of Kentucky is home to some of the most spectacular scenery in the state, and for adventure seekers, it’s an outdoor paradise.

You can kayak down the river, hike through the forest or climb the rocky canyon walls.

10. Daniel Boone National Forest

The Daniel Boone National Forest is one of the largest areas of preserved wilderness in Kentucky. The forest is named for Daniel Boone, an 18th-century pioneer who explored much of the state.

Encompassing an area of 8500 square kilometres, this is a vast land of beautiful scenery and outstanding landscapes, stretching across much of the eastern portion of the state.

There are endless day trip opportunities from Lexington and countless hiking trails. It’s likely that you will need to return time and time again to really appreciate the scale and beauty of this forest.

11. Hoosier National Forest

Found on the other side of the state, around 150 miles to the west of Lexington, is the smaller but equally beautiful Hoosier National Forest.

At 800 or so square kilometres in size, there are plenty of hikes to be made through this forest, while the many biking trails have made it a favourite destination for mountain bikers too.

12. Tri-State Peak

Found in the Cumberland Gap National Historical Park, the Tri-State Peak is a mountain that rises over 600 metres in height and that marks the boundaries of three states.

This is where Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia meet, and a steep 1-mile trail leads from the base to a marker at the summit, where you are met with unparalleled views over all three states simultaneously.

13. Huntington, West Virginia

Huntington is a city in West Virginia. It’s a two-hour drive to the east of Lexington.

This busy city has a long history in the region and is well worth visiting to explore the many museums and the growing culinary scene. There are beautiful wildlife areas to the north which follow the winding banks of the Ohio River and offer visitors an exceptional taste of West Virginia’s spectacular landscapes.

14. Cincinnati, Ohio

Cincinnati is waiting across the border in Ohio, a journey of just one and a half hours by car from Lexington. Found on the Ohio River, the city is one of the largest in the state.

Visit the Cincinnati Museum Centre to learn more about the history of the region before exploring the bustling stalls of the local Findlay Market, a favourite for residents and tourists alike when it comes to finding some great food.

15. Indianapolis, Indiana

Indianapolis is the capital of the state of Indiana, and it makes for a long but interesting day trip from Lexington.

This is a big city and there’s a lot to see and to do here, from the world’s largest speedway to state museums and government buildings.

Louisville: Experience Culture and History

Kentucky’s largest city has plenty of attractions to merit a day trip from Lexington. If the weather is right, begin by enjoying the waterfront and walking across the Big Four Bridge —a decommissioned railroad bridge from 1895 that crosses the Ohio River. The Louisville Slugger Museum and Muhammad Ali Center are musts for sports fans. There are plenty of free things to do in Louisville , too. For dinner, you’ll find some great places to eat around the city , and you can grab a drink in one of Hunter S. Thompson’s old haunts.

Getting There: Louisville is less than a 90-minute drive on Interstate 64, west of Lexington.

Travel Tip: Louisville’s many fun festivals , especially Thunder Over Louisville and the Kentucky Derby , create a lot of congestion downtown. Check the calendar of events before making a day trip.

Josephine Sculpture Park: Outdoor Art and Sculptures

Approximately 70 creations from artists around the world are spread throughout 30 acres of grassy fields at Josephine Sculpture Park. Some of the large sculptures are interactive and encourage play; others are thought provoking or downright bizarre.

Josephine is located right along Kentucky’s Bourbon Trail , making it a convenient place for enjoying some outdoor art or a picnic after touring one of the distilleries .

Getting There: Josephine Sculpture Park is located south of Frankfort, a 40-minute drive east of Lexington. Take US-421 (Leestown Road) for a scenic alternative to the interstate.

Travel Tip: There’s very little shade in the fields at Josephine. Time your trip appropriately and wear a hat. Entrance is free, but you should leave a token of appreciation in the donations box.

Natural Bridge State Park: Hike Around Sandstone Arches

Natural Bridge is a formidable sandstone arch that is 78 feet long and 65 feet high. Plus, there are other smaller arches and impressive overlooks to enjoy within the 2,300-acre nature preserve. Ten official trails (up to 7.5 miles long) wind through the most accessible part of Daniel Boone National Forest . Along with hiking, you’ll find options for family entertainment in the area including a Skylift and the first commercial via ferrata in the United States.

Getting There: Natural Bridge is an hour’s drive east of Lexington. Take Interstate 64 to Mountain Parkway then watch for signs.

Travel Tip: For more challenging hikes, rock climbing, or if you want to bring a dog, grab a map and head over to the nearby Red River Gorge .

Perryville Battlefield State Historic Site: Civil War History

As far as Civil War battlefields go, the one at Perryville is exceptionally well preserved. The landscape looks pretty well the same as it did on October 8, 1862, the day of Kentucky’s largest Civil War battle. Visitors to Perryville Battlefield can follow trails (walking and driving) that pass by 40 interpretive signs denoting major events and sites in the battle. A small, informative museum houses relics.

Getting There: You can drive to Perryville along scenic Highway US-68 (Harrodsburg Road) in a little over an hour.

Travel Tip: The drive to Perryville Battlefield via US-68 passes by Shaker Village and Old Fort Harrod State Park, two more historic places to include on your day trip from Lexington.

Bernheim Forest: Trails, Flowers, and Forest Giants

Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest has over 40 miles of trails that wind through a beautiful, arboretum setting. There are plenty of places closer to Lexington for hiking , but Berheim merits a day trip for seeing the famous Forest Giants. Danish artist Thomas Dambo created the three large fantasy creatures out of recycled wood and gave them a backstory. The giants can be seen while walking a two-mile loop.

Getting There: Berheim Forest is 30 minutes south of Louisville or around 1.5 hour’s drive from Lexington.

Travel Tip: Bernheim Forest is open until 7 p.m., but the visitor center is only open until 3 p.m.

Cumberland Falls State Park: Waterfalls and Moonbows

Kentucky’s 68-foot-tall Cumberland Falls is the second largest waterfall east of the Rockies. Around 17 miles of manicured hiking trails allow visitors to view the photogenic falls from different sides and explore farther afield into Daniel Boone National Forest.

Getting There: Cumberland Falls State Park is near Corbin, Kentucky, a little less than two hours south of Lexington.

Travel Tip: If possible, time your visit near a full moon for a chance to see a rare moonbow. Cumberland Falls is one of only three places in the Western Hemisphere that consistently creates one!

Newport on the Levee: Entertainment Along the Riverfront

Newport on the Levee is an entertainment district located just across the Ohio River from downtown Cincinnati . Along with enjoying Cincinnati’s scenic skyline, you can explore dozens of options for eating, shopping, and nightlife. Entertainment includes a large cinema, GameWorks, and a chance to see marine life up close at the award-winning Newport Aquarium .

Getting There: From Lexington, drive an hour and 40 minutes north on Interstate 75 to Newport, Kentucky.

Travel Tip: Walk across the nearby Purple People Bridge , the longest pedestrian bridge (0.5 miles) that links two states (Kentucky and Ohio).

Bardstown, Kentucky: Bluegrass Scenery and Distillery Tours

The pleasant town of Bardstown is known as the Bourbon Capital of the World. Around 95 percent of all bourbon comes from Kentucky, and Bardstown has 11 distilleries within proximity that can be toured! The 1812 plantation mansion ( My Old Kentucky Home State Park ) that served as inspiration for Stephen Foster's "My Old Kentucky Home, Good Night"—the state song of Kentucky—can also be enjoyed.

Getting There: Bardstown is a little over an hour’s drive from Lexington via Bluegrass Parkway.

Travel Tip: Enjoy a drink or some Southern cuisine in the Talbott Tavern . Constructed in 1779, the old stone inn is considered the oldest western stagecoach stop in America. Abraham Lincoln and Jessie James both stayed there.

Fort Boonesborough State Park: Experience Pioneer Life

Kentucky pioneer Daniel Boone and his party founded Fort Boonesborough in 1775 and defended it from British forces in 1778. Today, Fort Boonesborough is a state park where visitors can experience pioneer life in a replica fort staffed by living historians who share their knowledge. A nearby Civil War defensive position can also be explored on a day trip from Lexington.

Getting There: Fort Boonesborough is located on the Kentucky River around 45 minutes southwest of Lexington.

Travel Tip: Don’t miss the partially hidden Kentucky River Museum housed in a separate building. Admission is included in your fort ticket.

Berea, Kentucky: Hiking, Arts, and Crafts

Berea is a charming college town considered the Folk Arts and Crafts Capital of Kentucky. Along with visiting the Kentucky Artisan Center , Artisan Village, College Square, and numerous galleries, you can attend workshops to watch artists create their wares. Berea is also home to the Pinnacles , one of the most enjoyable and popular places to hike in Kentucky.

Getting There: Berea is 45 minutes south of Lexington on Interstate 75, making it an easy day trip.

Travel Tip: Trails at the Pinnacles can get busy on weekends, but fewer hikers venture beyond the east and west pinnacles. Continue up the steep trail for excellent views from Eagle’s Nest and Buzzard’s Roost.

A building on-site has concessions for purchase, plus indoor restrooms.

Though they’re usually associated with the 50s, drive-ins aren’t a relic of the past –– they’re a perfect destination for 2021.

Stratford-upon-Avon

The best day trip from London for: a Shakespearean adventure How to get there from London: a little over 2 hours by train from London mainline stations; changes are often required.

There are few places more charming than the medieval market town of Stratford-upon-Avon. It’s the birthplace and resting place of Shakespeare, and it’s easy to fall in love with the West Midlands spot during a jam-packed day trip from London.

Day trips here, understandably, centre around the Bard. Start where the wordsmith’s journey began with an educational walk around Shakespeare’s Birthplace, now a museum highlighting how his work continues to shape our lives today. From here, onto Anne Hathaway’s cottage. The family home of Anne Hathaway, William Shakespeare’s wife, is full of fascinating stories and historical finds, and passionate guides are on hand to delve into tales of the famous family that resided here for 13 generations. Literary associations aside, entertain young minds at the Mechanical Art and Design Museum, get tropical at the stunning Stratford Butterfly Farm, and sample a craft beer before the return journey home at The Garrick Pub Restaurant, which is purportedly the oldest boozer in the town.

In a town dating back almost 1,000 years, you’d expect to stumble across a spectral resident or two in the historical buildings. Check into one of the charming hotels during spooky season and embark on a ghost tour to hear about tales from a haunted tearoom and what some unlucky guests have experienced in one of the town centre’s four-star hotels.

If you decide to stay over: For a fittingly period stay, check into The White Swan . The property’s use as an inn dates back to the sixteenth century, and the walls hold all the charm of a Tudor property with trimmings suited to twenty-first-century travelers. Cozy by the fire after a hearty meal, and sink into four-poster beds before another day exploring Warwickshire’s attractions and natural beauty.

Canterbury, Kent

The best day trip from London for: a colorful, food-fuelled history lesson in the garden of England How to get there from London: The direct train from London St Pancras to Canterbury West can take as little as 53 minutes

Prehistoric settlements have been uncovered in this corner of Kent, and it was a popular haunt of the Romans, who surrounded the early city by constructing an earth bank and fortified walls around 130 acres of land. The story of Canterbury that schoolchildren learn, however, comes from the medieval period, courtesy of Chaucer.

The city is home to one of the UK’s most spectacular cathedrals. Pilgrims have navigated the route to this ethereal site for many centuries, and it’s here that Thomas Becket was infamously slaughtered at the order of Henry II—although this series of events has been contested by countless historians. From the cathedral, scan the selection of novels through the crooked door of the Catching Lives Charity Bookshop, before soaking up the sun in one of the city’s hidden pub gardens—The Dolphin and The Parrot are some of our favorites.

Stroll along the remnant of the ancient wall that is still accessible, or settle in for a lazy afternoon on the colorful banks of the River Stour after collecting treats from The Goods Shed. Historic river tours of the river are touristy but not overly expensive, so well worth booking ahead of a visit to uncover the secrets of these romantic, cobblestone streets. – Connor Sturges

Elmley Nature Reserve

The best day trip from London for:  getting fully immersed in nature How to get there from London:  The train from London St Pancras International to Swale takes 1 hour 50 minutes, and then it’s a short taxi ride to Elmley Nature Reserve.

Think of day trips to Kent, and you’ll probably skip straight over the Isle of Sheppey. Just off the northern coast of Kent next to the Thames Estuary, Sheppey is an unglamorous largely industrial island that initially lacks the tourist appeal of some of its Kentish neighbors. But there’s a secret gem here right off the mainland–the bucolic Elmley Nature Reserve, 3,300 acres of wetlands and wilderness. This family-run estate is a true wildlife conservation haven and is the perfect trip for birdwatchers and nature lovers. With over forty varieties of birds raising their young at Elmley each year, there are some beautiful walking trails to spot them all, plus the other resident hares, frogs, dragonflies, cows, voles, bees, and more. As soon as your taxi turns onto the long entry drive, it’s easy to see elegant birds such as egrets, lapwings, and redshank happily frolicking on the flat marshlands, and that’s before you’ve even started exploring. Open Wednesday to Sunday, the entry fee is £6 and that gets you access to the beautiful open landscape for a self-guided wander (although you have to stay on the paths!); they also arrange organised tours at dusk and dawn for £29.50 if you want an expert to help you spot marsh harriers, long-eared owls, sparrowhawk, and peregrine falcons. It might be only 40 miles from London, but it feels like another world. As well as an incredible place for a day out in nature, there’s also a lovely barn restaurant to get cozy in for toasties at lunch and more hearty evening meals, plus an impressive range of smart places to stay dotted across the reserve if you want to extend your visit. – Sonya Barber

Great Garden Escape, The Newt in Somerset

On arrival, they’ll be given a tour of the gardens at The Newt, which have been landscaped over hundreds of years and are now home to wildlife including deer and newts—of course. Clifton, Bristol

The best day trip from London for : packing a lot in How to get there from London: The train from London Paddington takes about 1 hour 35 minutes.

After hopping off the train at Bristol Temple Meads, take a stroll to Clifton—the city’s most beautiful leafy suburb. Quiet residential streets are lined with pretty Georgian townhouses, spots of greenery to wander through off the cobbled streets and an eclectic mix of independent cafés, restaurants, and shops.

Start with a gander around Clifton Arcade in the heart of Clifton Village, where the 17 boutiques are filled with knick-knacks and intriguing antiques. It’s not a true shopping experience without a pit stop for coffee and cake—try one of Bristol’s top coffee spots, Spicer + Cole, or—for a 100-per-cent plant-based menu—refuel with a slice of rose and vanilla loaf and a superfood latte at East Village Café.

Pick up some fresh fruit and vegetables from the local greengrocers and head to Clifton bridge for fabulous views across the River Avon. It's one of the oldest surviving iron suspension bridges in the world. Learn about its history at the Visitor Centre, stopping off for a pint of traditional Somerset cider at the White Lion by its side. Continue the historical tour by walking up to Clifton Observatory, which has a museum featuring a Victorian-era Camera Obscura and a mythical Giant’s Cave, alongside its own rooftop café serving up breathtaking views. And don’t miss out on a walk down Royal York Crescent—one of the most expensive streets in Bristol, which was also once reputed to be the longest terrace in Europe.

When the weather is good, there are a couple of brilliant walking routes to try: the six-mile Bath Skyline, for example, is a short stroll from the city center and tramps through woodland, meadows, and orchards with views of the buildings below.

The Somerset city’s literary heritage is well documented—Jane Austen is probably the most famous one-time resident—and there’s still a thriving network of bookshops and literature festivals here, including at bookworm magnet Topping and Company, which stocks more than 55,000 titles. Restaurants are driven by excellent local produce and seasonal ingredients. Grab a traditional lunch at The Circus (we recommend the Wiltshire lamb two ways), or order bun cha at Vietnamese spot Noya’s Kitchen. It's best enjoyed during a long ramble, where you’re likely to meet free-roaming New Forest ponies, cattle, and even pigs, followed by a hearty pub lunch with local ale and a warming log fire.

Take the train from Waterloo to Beaulieu Road station and fuel your hike with a pint of real ale at the Drift Inn. If independent shops, cafés, and beaches are on the agenda, it’s best to head to Lymington instead, as this one-and-a-half-hour loop around the pub on the edge of the New Forest is blissfully rugged and remote. Don’t miss the fresh salads and fish lunches once you’ve been pummeled in the spa or worked up an appetite in the Grecian-style pool. Hertford, Hertfordshire

With trains running every half hour, it’s possible to find yourself marching around its 15th-century castle grounds (check ahead for cinema screenings, talks, and events), net fishing from a sandy cove in Hartham Common, or wandering about its dinky museum within the hour. Alternatively, if you’re feeling ambitious, you can cycle from London along the River Lea towpath.

On arrival, dip into its handful of local shops—The Women's Society Boutique has an imposing exterior but is a real treasure trove—before stopping at one of the many independent cafés and restaurants. Popular deli-bar Giambrone’s serves authentic Italian plates, while Hertford Coffee Lab makes for a cool pit-stop, and Georgian townhouse and B&B Number One Port Hill hosts occasional pop-up suppers. Plus, the artsy Dog and Whistle, once a pop-up café, has blossomed into a hipster foodie pub and music venue with rooms. Indeed, Hertford—quiet market town by day and more bustling nightspot come evening— specializes in pubs, particularly old-world ones. There's The Salisbury Arms Hotel, said to have been the place where Oliver Cromwell stayed during the Civil War and home to a number of ghosts; the 16th-century White Horse; the 17th-century Blackbirds; and the riverside Old Barge (exact age unknown, but 'old' is part of the name…) If you have time, go on the three-mile walk to Ware alongside the River Lea towpath–the neighboring town also has a plethora of pubs—and catch the train back to London from there. – Becky Lucas

This hillside scribble of Georgian streets tucked behind the Kent coast really hit our radar in 2018. Nicknamed ‘Margate’s little sister’, it’s a much cozier, countryside version of its arty neighbor. And that’s exactly its appeal. Deal is less shouty than Margate, but there’s still an exciting slew of shops, cafés, and galleries that have arrived over the past few years. The Saturday Market stalls are worth a rummage, but it’s the food that brings the locals back each weekend. For more of a sit-down lunch we love Frog and Scot where the chef, previously of The Sportsman in Seasalter, cooks up a daily changing menu based on hyper-local produce. Founder of Smugglers Records Will Greenham (ex singer and guitarist of the band Cocos Lovers, who’ve supported Mumford & Sons on tour) is at the heart of the town’s music scene, and in terms of art, Linden Hall Studio is a contemporary gallery in a converted chapel that wouldn’t look out of place in Mayfair. — Tabitha Joyce

Whitstable, Kent

This little town on the north Kent coast isn’t quite the sort-of-secret it was back in the 1990s, when DFLs (local jargon for Londoners) rediscovered it, arriving at weekends for seafood at Wheelers on the high street and pints of Kentish ale at the beach-side Old Neptune pub. But it’s still an atmospheric place to head for a hit of vitamin B12—via a dozen or so oysters—then a scrunch along the shingle shore, spotting Second World War sea forts across the waves and seals in the harbor. There are plenty of places to eat: avoid the overpriced Royal Native Oyster Stores and head instead to JoJo’s, just down the road in Tankerton, for mackerel fillets and Med-inspired small plates. Or Samphire, a Whitstable bistro with cuttlefish risotto and Romney Marsh lamb on the menu. There’s also a thriving micropub scene here, with The Handsome Sam, The Black Dog, and the larger Twelve Taps for hoppy experimentation. But our favorite pastime is picking up a pot of cockles and whelks from the quayside, or fish and chips and oysters from The Forge shack, and devouring them in the shade of a wooden groyne on the beach, preferably with a bottle of English fizz to hand. – Rick Jordan

After breakfast at Whitehouse Rye–order the halloumi hash–pick up a new read at The Tiny Book Store (the clue’s in the name) and window shop for that fantasy mansion at striking antiques shop Strand House Interiors. The blustery dunes and invigorating waters of Camber Sands, one of the best beach near London , are a 15 minute ride away on the local bus, but head back in time for a rustic supper at Tuscan Rye, where fresh pasta (ricotta ravioli with brown-butter sauce, potato, and thyme tortellini in a rich ragù) draws loyal locals. – Sarah James

It’s no secret that this Victorian seaside town has had quite the hipster renaissance in recent years, sparked mostly by the arrival of the Turner Contemporary gallery in 2011 and spurred on by a slew of new openings and a wave of Londoners upping sticks and moving down to the Kent coast. For a cultural outing, the waterside Turner Contemporary is still a must. Entry is free so it’s worth popping in even if you’ve never heard of the artists on show, and the shop has some nice local products. For more contemporary art head to Crate, an artist-led project space in an old printworks. If you’d prefer something older—much older—wander over to the most ancient building in town, the Tudor House, a Grade II-listed 16th-century timber-framed house on King Street. It’s on your route from the seafront to the mysterious Shell Grotto, a spooky set of underground tunnels covered in more than four million shells.

A trip to Margate isn’t complete without a few hours in Dreamland, whether it’s for some spins on the rides or to see one of the amusement park’s impressive line-up of gigs in the evenings. Do take a stroll around town to hit up the vintage shops selling retro clothes, furniture, and homewares, where you can still find some decent bargains. And don’t forget to head over to Cliff Terrace to visit the flagship store of cult natural skincare brand Haeckels, which makes divine-smelling beauty products using seaweed gathered on the beach nearby. Speaking of the beach, if you want to go swimming walk along the coast to Walpole Bay Tidal Pool, a man-made sea lagoon where you can find calm waters and steps for easier access. If you arrive early (or stay the night), tuck into cracking breakfast at Storeroom coffee shop or at Cliffs, where there’s also a record shop, a hair salon, and a yoga studio. In fact, the whole up-and-coming area of Cliftonville is worth exploring. After all that roaming, great seafood can be found for dinner at either Angela’s or Hantverk & Found—reserve a table in advance though, as both get booked up. – Sonya Barber

Eastbourne is an old-timey British seaside town with a Victorian pier, a pebble beach, and a much-loved bandstand where tribute acts reign: ‘Queen’, ‘ABBA’, ‘Frank Sinatra,’ and ‘Lady Gaga’ have all played. You could spend the day taking in the town’s thriving art galleries, with plenty of opportunities for refueling stops along the way (our favorite is the stripped-back-trendy Nelson Coffee Co opposite the station), but the real draw here is enjoying the great outdoors at Beachy Head, where you’ll find the famous Seven Sisters chalk cliffs. A hike with seriously impressive views out to sea runs across the top. Wander all the way along to neighboring Seaford or make one of the secret beaches tucked away at the foot of the cliffs your way point. It’s a steep climb down, but Falling Sands Beach is quiet and sandy and well worth the adventure. Eastbourne often makes the list of the sunniest places in the UK, so don’t forget your sunglasses. – Olivia Holborow

Brighton is a brilliant mish-mash of retro, seaside fun, and progressive culture. Book in advance and you can get return tickets from London for as little as £10. A maze of bunting-lined streets, The Lanes bursts at the seams with vintage shops–don’t miss Beyond Retro and Dirty Harry, and our two favorite independent boutiques, Our Daily Edit and Peggs & Son, as well as retro memorabilia (navigate the turnstile at Snoopers Paradise for collectors’ items, vinyl, and furniture). Time your day trip to include breakfast at Kensingtons—grab a table on the balcony for giant plates piled high with eggs, toast, and beans. It’s not the easiest spot to find, so look out for a shop called Artemis on Kensington Gardens, which overflows with sheepskin rugs and pelts—the café is on the left; follow the smell of bacon up the stairs. Later, reserve a table at Food for Friends, a superb veggie restaurant with award-winning flavors and presentation. A short walk away is the huge 8km pebbly beach–the section near the Palace Pier is dotted with stripy deckchairs and usually buzzing from spring to autumn (and often absolutely crammed in summer). There’s something terribly British about layering up and enjoying a windswept walk in the winter months, too. Reward yourself with a bag of hot, sugary donuts from the pier.

Lewes, Sussex

Lewes: the market town in the South Downs that sits against a backdrop of chalk hills and green peaks. Cobblestoned 'twittens' (narrow streets), hand-painted shop signs and crumbling tiles from the 1960s make it feel like a town time forgot, and its slower rhythm makes for a reinvigorating gear-change. The Needlemakers on West Street is home to a range of small, independent shops that sell local craftsmanship, from jewelry to books–Alexis Dove is a favorite for delicate silverware and Susie Petrou has an eye for vintage blouses and Romanian embroidery. There’s an incongruous well at the bottom by the vintage shops— throw in a penny for good luck before you start hunting through piles of clothes and bags. Lewes Flea Market is an alluring source for antique furniture and quirky homeware, and is open daily (not to be confused with the outdoor Sunday market, which is also worth a visit). At the other end of town, at the bottom of Cliffe High Street, you can find Bill Collison’s very first Bill’s restaurant, a European deli-turned-eatery, where you can get hearty dishes such as pumpkin, fig, and chestnut roast, or a beef, bacon, and camembert burger. After lunch, ponder the paperbacks at the Fifteenth Century Bookshop, which has been carefully restored in recent years but remains as much of a landmark as Lewes Castle. Finish the day with a pint; Harvey’s Brewery is the only independent brewery in Sussex and provides the John Harvey Tavern over the road with local cask ales (download the self-titled app to find out where you can get it in London).

Folkestone, Kent

The seaside town of Folkestone is mid-makeover, which is the ideal time to visit—before everything gets priced up and the place’s quirks glossed over. The appeal of Sunny Sands beach is self-explanatory—this tiny, windswept slip of sand is one of the best beaches in Kent and the ideal spot to kick off your day (unsurprisingly, it fills up with families wielding buckets and spades, sticky with sunscreen, too). A trio of swashbuckling pubs and restaurants—The Ship Inn, The Mariner, and The Captain’s Table—lines the seafront, but the real treasure can be found in the Creative Quarter. At the bottom of The Old High Street is Bounce Vintage, an open space with rails full of retro sportswear, French chore jackets, and Aloha shirts. If you exchange smiles and pleasantries with the rosy-cheeked owners, they might just offer you an espresso on the house. Failing that, further up the road, Steep Street sells specialty coffee, homemade cake, and books . Floor-to-ceiling, wall-to-wall shelves of hardbacks tower over fat leather armchairs and blackboard tables that you can doodle on in chalk. There are endless places to eat and drink around town: Rocksalt for a smart menu and sea views; Papas for old-fashioned fish’n’chips ; Beano’s for veggies; La Casa Del Bello Gelato for ice cream Follies for pizza; and The Pullman for pints. The Harbour Arm, though, is where Folkestone’s own folk go—the Champagne bar hidden in the lighthouse at the end is rustic, romantic, and completely charming.

Oxford, Oxfordshire

In one of the most quintessentially English cities in the UK (and the most expensive to live in outside London), cream tea is not just a rite of passage—it’s a requirement. And there’s only one place to take it—The Vaults & Garden Café, signposted by the presence of an antique bicycle with a flowerbed in its basket, is a gorgeous 14th-century building surrounded by colleges (Oriel, Brasenose, Murton, All Souls), where scones come loaded with clotted cream and seasonal homemade jam (the café has serious sustainability credentials, too). Architecture is a major draw in Oxford ; the libraries, bridges, and even cinemas feature Palladian domes, Norman design, ziggurat influences and listed buildings which make this a city to see on foot (Radcliffe Square is a must, and it’s worth paying £4 to climb the tower at the Church of St Mary The Virgin for the best view of Oxford). If you’re taking kids, the Pitt Rivers Museum is packed with bizarre artifacts and stories they’ll tell their friends about, and The Story Museum welcomes you through a wardrobe into Narnia and other fictional worlds of wonder. If you booked a babysitter, however, grab a drink at the brilliant Freud bar in Jericho—a stained-glass church-turned-cool-cocktail-bar that is grown-up enough to feel sophisticated but student-y enough to have plenty of atmosphere and frivolity in the air (or perhaps it’s something in the drinks).

Cambridge, Cambridgeshire

Like cycling in Amsterdam or taking trams in San Francisco , punting really is the most sophisticated way to see the city of Cambridge and the university grounds. Scudamore’s is the oldest ‘chauffeur’ company and offers a more traditional tour, but board a boat from the Garret Hostel Bridge for a younger, more humorous experience (ask your punter why the GHB is also known as Orgasm Bridge). For lunch, foodPark is a top hawker convoy of Sri Lankan curries, wood-fired pizza, and open-wide burgers that sets up from 12pm until 2pm in varying locations around Cambridge from Wednesday to Friday. For something more upscale, book one of Galleria’s terrace tables on the south side of the Magdalene Bridge, with British fusion food and views of the River Cam (your gluten- and dairy-free friends will thank you, as there are two separate menus specifically catering to their diets). In the autumn, the leaf-covered colleges are particularly picturesque as they turn red and rust, and in spring, Parker’s Piece is a scenic stretch of greenery from which to navigate (spot the lamppost that supposedly inspired the post in CS Lewis’ Narnia). From here, find eccentric English shop Bowes & Co, Fitzbillies for iced buns, Aromi for Italian nibbles, Kettle’s Yard art gallery, and G David for antique books. Ashdown Forest, East Sussex

A.A. Milne famously wrote the stories of Winnie the Pooh while living just north of Ashdown Forest. Known as 100 Acre Wood in Pooh’s world, the forest is home to the spellbinding stories and is an enchanting place to stretch your legs for a day, easily accessible via East Grinstead station. Stretches of open heathland give way to leafy walkways and carpets of bluebells in spring, where the woods teem with wildlife (spot fallow deer, badgers, and the odd friendly pheasant—no honey-eating bears, though), and the only noise is birdsong. You can even visit Pooh Bridge (for a game of Poohsticks, naturally), but be warned, it’s a prominent tourist spot. Pooh was a big fan of having ‘a little smackerel of something’, and nearby village Forest Row has plenty of places for elevenses. Taffels deli is a family-run café and much-loved lunch spot (there is nothing skinny about the skinny chips; they are double-fried and divine) and caters to all dietary requirements, while Java & Jazz serves huge hot chocolates cakes and crispy-crusted pizza. For proper pub food, the cozy Hatch Inn (one of our favorite country pubs near London) is known for roasts with all the trimmings and offers plenty of dog-patting opportunities. If you’re not in a hurry to get home, head to Linton’s car park—locally known as ‘the viewpoint’—for sunset.

Dungeness, Kent

The best day trip from London for : nature enthusiasts How to get there from London : The drive to Romney Marsh via the A20 and M20 takes 2 hours.

Arriving in Dungeness from London feels a little like stepping out of a Tardis into a different time zone, where a recent apocalypse has left the landscape barren, the wildlife overrun, the buildings flattened, and the population dramatically compromised (in fact, the Dungeness Power Station appeared in Doctor Who in 1971). Unofficially known as ‘Britain’s only desert’, Dungeness has a unique environment—single-story buildings appear to have been swallowed by the shingle and plants let loose with little regard for human-imposed order. The beach resembles a mass shipwreck; abandoned fishing boats, crumbling shacks, winches, and forgotten tractors coated in decades of rust sit, untouched, unmoved and as mysterious as a Russell T Davies plot. There’s not a whole lot to do here—but there’s so much to see, and so much to pique your curiosity that you’ll spend the journey back googling the area. Kids will love the sheer strangeness of it all, and it’s impossible to resist the childlike urge to climb and run and play. Few places so close to London feel like such an adventure; the journey can take less than two hours, and, if you time it right, you can order the catch of the day for lunch from roadside hut the Snack Shack, which does the freshest fish, lobster rolls, and ice-cold cans of San Pellegrino.

Surrey’s proximity to London makes the journey a breeze—and it’s an especially astute pick if you’re likely to be coming with a car full of little ones. At Henry VIII’s home Hampton Court Palace, there are family-friendly events such as beast quests and ghost tours, as well as the famous giant hedge maze, where adventurous kids can lead the troops. In winter, an ice rink is set against the historic backdrop of the palace, a building whose grandiose architecture is shaped by both the Tudor and Baroque periods. If you’re escaping the city (and the kids), however, check in at Grayshott Health Spa, a traditional country home with cutting-edge treatments. Surrounded by 47 acres of flowering gardens, it’s a peaceful place to step back and take stock. Connect with nature at Kew, too, where the Royal Botanic Gardens are open to the public all year round. The winter light show is particularly mesmerizing, when the sun starts to sink earlier and earlier. Be sure to take cash for mince pies and mulled wine as you wander through the grounds. Having been awarded a Michelin star, Steve Drake’s restaurant Sorrel in Dorking (a market town with chocolate-box charm) is currently the county’s hottest restaurant with the most exciting ‘discovery menu.’

If you decide to stay over : Surrey is home to some of the best spas near London, such as Grayshott, where the Manor House rooms offer faded charm.

Hastings and St Leonards

There’s almost too much to fit into a one-day visit to Hastings, especially if you want to pop over to the neighboring town of St Leonards. Over the last few years, these two East Sussex enclaves have become a popular bolthole for burnt-out Londoners looking for a bohemian seaside escape. To see what all the fuss is about, head straight to explore Hasting’s quaint Old Town, a picturesque maze of streets sandwiched between two dramatic cliffs. Pedestrianised scenic George Street is where most of the action happens, with a thrum of cafés, shops, and pubs, but it’s worth wandering the surrounding streets too. Seek out AG Hendy & Co on the High Street for well-curated vintage homewares and stop into The Crown for cozy pub grub made with excellent local produce. If you’re up for a wander, get the funicular up and walk along to the cliff to Fairlight Glen, a beautiful secluded beach where clothing is optional. Or if that sounds a bit much, stay in the Old Town and explore the dramatic black fisherman’s huts on Rock-A-Nore beach where there’s Hastings Contemporary art gallery, a tiny shipwreck museum, fresh seafood stalls, and a very cute miniature railway. Next up, take the 40-minute amble along the beach past the pier to St Leonards and stop off for food at the fabulous seafront café, Goat Ledge. It’s worth the trip for their crispy panko fish baps and katsu curry sauce chips alone. Nearby, there are great independent shops selling everything from candles to kimonos on Norman Road and King’s Road where you can easily spend a few hours happily browsing and café hopping before settling into dinner at Michelin-recommended pub The Royal. — Sonya Barber

In addition to the charming countryside and hills, there’s plenty to do in the Cotswolds . I love starting at Burford , where the views are gorgeous and you can enjoy some window shopping.

Then, head to pretty Bourton-on-the-Water for a relaxing walk along the river. Plus, don’t miss Castle Combe , Broadway , Stow-on-the-Wold and Cirencester.

This is the ideal day trip for nature lovers and those looking to recharge away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

2. New Forest

Best for: Wildlife

Another exceptional national park in England is the New Forest . There’s no need to plan meticulously, as it’s just a 90-minute train ride from London.

I have no doubt that you’ll fall in love with the wildlife and woodlands of this park.

A trip to New Forest involves plenty of strolling and sightseeing, so don’t forget your comfy shoes.

I’d really recommend trying horseback riding if you visit. Or if you’re less active, simply seeing the wild horses and ponies will still be rewarding – head to Burley for the best chance of spotting them.

Other New Forest towns and villages that I’d recommend visiting are Brockenhurst, Lymington, Lyndhurst and Beaulieu.

After a day of hiking and exploring, restore your inner peace by dropping by one of New Forest’s relaxing spas. Or stop by one of the incredible New Forest restaurants for a meal.

3. Brighton

Who says you can’t enjoy a brilliant beachside day in the UK? Brighton is a prime coastal town, offering plenty of activities for families, solo travellers, and couples.

You can’t visit Brighton without heading to the Pier. Not only will you enjoy a splendid seaside view, but you’ll also experience arcades, rides, and classic British food, such as fish and chips!

Many people make the trip to Brighton just to visit the Royal Pavilion – it really looks like something you’d find abroad, not in the UK.

The palace is a marvel, with lavish interiors and amazing architecture, plus I love the romantic surrounding gardens.

4. Lake District

Best for: Hiking

A day trip to England’s largest national park is probably already on your UK bucket list .

After all, this World Heritage Site was the filming location for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Paddington 2, and Miss Potter.

When making the trip to Lake District , I recommend starting early. This way, you can cross off as many attractions as possible!

This includes the magnificent Windermere Lake and Keswick. There are various water activities and serene views, making the trip perfect for large groups with different interests.

Best for: Architecture

Cambridge offers a perfect balance between historical charm and modern ambience. Since this is a University town, you can expect plenty of lively pubs, as well as ancient museums.

Visiting the University is an exceptional way to relish the Gothic architecture and picturesque gardens. Plus, punting on the River Cam is a quintessential activity that you cannot miss.

My tip is to make the visit during the summer, so you can catch the star-studded Folk Festival .

6. Whitstable

Best for: Oysters

The charming seaside town of Whitstable in Kent is full of culture and artistic communities, which results in a pretty inspiring and relaxing day trip.

The Whitstable Harbour is where you’ll enjoy fresh seafood and a gorgeous salty sea breeze. In fact, Whitstable is famous for its oysters, so if you’re a fan then you’ll be in your element here!

The Neppy is the reason I always go back, as the food paired with the sea view is marvellous.

The Tankerton Slopes are a perfect spot to enjoy a picnic and snap a couple of pictures for your Instagram.

Make sure to also check out the local galleries and museums. For the perfect trip, it’s best to check the opening times beforehand and bring a raincoat as the weather can be unpredictable.

Best for: Picturesque harbour

Another pretty coastal town, Whitby is an absolute gem of a UK day trip in North Yorkshire. This small site is full of rich history, vibrant culture, and stunning scenery.

In particular, Whitby Abbey , the ruins of a 7th-century castle, is an iconic location overlooking the town. It served as an inspiration to multiple films and TV shows.

Don’t miss the quaint fishing villages of Staithes and Robin Hood’s Bay. Plus, I’d recommend seeking out the unspoilt sandy beaches in the area.

8. Isle of Wight

This UK day trip is especially perfect for those looking to reconnect with nature and families wanting some outdoor activity. You can visit caves, castles, and parks.

If you make it to Peak District, I’d recommend stopping by Chatsworth House to take in the stunning architecture.

Plus, I always love to stop by Bakewell, which is home to the historic bridge, as well as some delicious local cuisine.

Lastly, the Eden Project, as the name suggests, is a piece of heaven on earth. It’s hard to believe that this glorious garden was once barren land.

Now, clad with various plants of differing climate zones, you can learn plenty about gardening and marvel at the beauty of nature.

The massive biome includes plenty of activities and learning experiences for kids. Yet, just strolling around the gardens makes for a pretty romantic day trip for couples too.

From the roman city of bath to the wilds of the new forest, there are so many amazing day trips from london by train to discover.

Honestly, when I’m in London, I am 100% not using a car. Whether it’s riding on the Tube, hailing a taxi, or just wandering around the city centre, driving is not something I’m likely to do.

So, when I want to get outside of the city for the day, I rely on the train. Over the years, I’ve compiled a list of the best day trips from London by train. Maybe you want to hit the beach? Perhaps you want to dive into history? Or maybe you want to check out a UNESCO World Heritage Site? Within a couple of hours’ ride from London, you can do all of that!

Some of my favourite train trips from London include heading into the picturesque Cotswolds regions, hiking the Seven Sisters near Dover, and even casting a spell or two at the Harry Potter Studio Tour.

The best part? You can hop on a train, enjoy the scenic journey through the English countryside, and be back in London in time for a West End show or a late-night stroll along the Thames. The accessibility of these day trips is what makes them truly special—it’s like having a variety of mini adventures right at your doorstep.

Day trips from London by train

Hampton court palace.

Looking to check out the palace where King Henry VIII used to reign supreme? This London day trip favourite is always popular with history buffs visiting the capital thanks to the beautiful architecture, art, and knowledgeable guides. It’s also a super easy train ride from the centre of London. 

In fact, it’s just a 45-minute ride from London Waterloo Station directly to Hampton Court Palace train station and from there, it’s only around a five-minute walk to the palace gates. Day trips from London by train don’t come much easier than this!

Harry Potter Studio Tours

Want to experience the magic in front of and behind the camera? Well then, a visit to the Warner Brothers Harry Potter Studio Tour in Watford is a must. Filled with memorabilia, props, sets, and costumes from the films, it’s every fan’s dream. 

To get to the studios, you’ll journey for about 20 minutes from London Euston Station to Watford Junction, and then jump on the 15-minute shuttle to the studio. The bonus is that the shuttle is actually designed like the famous Knight Bus, so the experience starts before you even arrive. All aboard!

This legendary Roman city is a beautiful train trip from London as it’s only 90 minutes from London Paddington Station. Home to the Roman Baths UNESCO World Heritage Site, stunning architecture, and the home of the iconic author, Jane Austen, there’s certainly a little something for everyone on a day trip to Bath.

You can easily spend a full weekend here, but with the regular train routes back to the capital that run relatively late, you can definitely enjoy a full day running around this historic city.

The Seven Sisters

As one of the UK’s most iconic sights, the Seven Sisters white chalky cliffs near Dover are an easy train trip from London. You can travel from London Victoria Station and get off at Eastbourne, allowing you to wander along the coastline and see the Seven Sisters in all their glory. 

Trains to Eastbourne take around an hour and 25 minutes from London, and then you can enjoy a stunning coastal hike to your final destination!

Windsor Castle

Love royal history or are you just a fan of insanely old castles? Well, Windsor Castle is one of the King’s royal residences and is over 900 years old. This impressive palace has played host to royal weddings, including Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s.

Windsor Castle is super popular at pretty much any time of the year, so I definitely recommend getting your tickets in advance . This will also let you know when the royal family are in residence, as you might not be able to access the full castle and grounds. Travel-wise, Windsor Castle is around an hour from London Waterloo station. 

If you’re looking to check out another bustling city, journey between one and a half to two hours from London Paddington Station to Bristol. Home to the impressive Clifton Suspension Bridge, a bustling independent food and drink scene, and a fun and thriving waterfront, Bristol is an ideal day trip from London by train. 

Make sure you take time to check out all the street art around the city, after all, the city is the hometown of famous artist, Banksy!

Leeds Castle

This next train trip from London is a little more complicated to get to, but if you’re visiting Kent, you can’t leave without checking out Leeds Castle . Get the 50-minute train from London Bridge to Maidstone and then jump on a short 20-minute bus ride to the gates of Leeds Castle.

With a super cool hedge maze, museum, lake, and more, this Norman Castle is a popular day trip for a good reason. Again, I’d recommend booking your ticket in advance , especially during the school holidays.   

Looking for a fun day at the seaside? Well, you’ll be hard-pushed to find a better day trip than Brighton . Located on the south coast around an hour from either London Victoria Station or London Bridge Station, Brighton is always bustling with things to do.

From the opulent and historic Brighton Palace Pier to the popular waterfront and beach to the dozens of independent boutiques and restaurants, you’re really spoiled for choice here!

Warwick Castle

If you’re looking for a train trip from London that’s a little further north, jump on the train to Warwick Castle. You can get a one hour and 45-minute train from London Marylebone to Warwick and then walk to the castle gates.

With the original parts of the castle stemming back to 1068, Warwick Castle has seen a lot of bloody battles, royalty, and history along the way. Nowadays, you can experience archery, falconry shows, renactments of medieval battles, and many more. It’s the perfect family-friendly day trip, but again, book way in advance !

As one of the academic heartlands of England, Oxford is a beautiful and architecturally stunning city to visit. Whether you’re a Harry Potter fan who wants to visit the real Great Hall or you’re in love with the His Dark Materials series, Oxford has inspired a lot of writers and academics over the years.

Oxford is actually really easy to get to on a day trip from London by train. Depending on which is closer or more convenient, you can get a train from either from Marylebone Station or Paddington Station, and both routes are around an hour. 

The New Forest

Need to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and get back to the nature? Well, a day trip to the New Forest is going to be right up your street. You can get a 90-minute train from London Waterloo station to Brockenhurst, in the heart of the New Forest.

With tons of wildlife, walking routes, and museums in the area, you can easily have a fun-filled day surrounded by tranquil greenery.  Keep in mind that the National Park is huge and spreads all the way down to the coastline, so make a plan of the areas you want to visit first!

When you think of quintessential English towns and villages, the image that comes up is probably of the Cotswolds . Located just an hour and 40 minutes from London Paddington Station, the Cotswolds is the perfect quaint escape from the city. With chocolate box cottages, hiking and walking routes and plenty of cosy pubs to warm up in, it’s an amazing day out for the whole family.

In fact, the Cotswolds is actually an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, so you might want to bring your camera with you! It’s also rumoured that parts of the Cotswolds inspired J.R.R Tolkien when he was writing The Lord of the Rings!

Stratford-Upon-Avon

If you’re a literature lover then you have to carve out time in your itinerary to visit Stratford-Upon-Avon. This small town in the Midlands is known for basically one thing and that’s being the home of the iconic playwright, William Shakespeare.

Located around two and a half hours from London Marylebone Station, Stratford-Upon-Avon is home to the Royal Shakespeare Company who perform works of the Bard all year round. It’s a prestigious theatre and has featured actors like Dame Judi Dench, Sir Ian McKellen, and David Tennant to name just a few! Check out the RSC website ahead of time to find out what’s on while you’re in the area!
