Sea to Summit Trek TkII Review: Tried and Tested By Me (2024)

Ahoy and welcome to my  Sea to Summit Trek TkII 18 review !

For backpackers who love adventure, there are countless scenarios in which having a lightweight sleeping bag with you on your journey is beneficial. Unless you are going on a trekking-specific holiday though, a sleeping bag lives at the bottom of your backpack, without receiving much in the way of daily use. That is until you need it.

Choosing the right one is therefore hard. You need one that is light but still warm and because you may not even use it much, you don’t want to pay  too  much now. Whether you are planning a multi-month backpacking trip to South America or you are just looking for a warm, light sleeping bag for general three-season use, you need to pay attention.

Last weekend, I was able to take the Sea to Summit Trek TkII out for an overnight test in the frosty green winter forest here in the Pacific Northwest, USA. This super-compact sleeping system has gained a reputation for being a reliably warm and spacious performer and so I decided to find out for myself what this sleeping bag is all about.

Right then, let’s get the show on the road and get on with this epic Sea To Summit Trek TKii sleeping bag review!

In the below Sea To Summit Trek review I will break down absolutely everything I learned about this sleeping bag from testing it close to its performance limit. This Trek TkII review will cover key features and performance, weight, sizing and fit, materials used, packability, moisture resistance, competitor comparison, and heaps more.

The cold months are truly upon us, so it’s time to think about cozy, down-filled adventure meat pods—aka sleeping bags.

Let’s get to it…

Note : This review covers the Sea to Summit Trek TkII 18 model. This sleeping bag also is available with 10 F and 30 F temperature rating specs. This sleeping bag series is unisex.

Sea to Summit Trek TkII Review: The Big Questions

  • What is the lower vs comfort limit of the Trek TkII?
  • Is the Trek TkII waterproof?
  • For long-term and/or long-distance backpackers, is the Trek Tk2 a good choice?
  • What are the sizing options for the Sea To Summit Trek TK ii sleeping bag?
  • Is the Trek TkII an ultralight sleeping bag?
  • Is the Trek Tk2 a mummy sleeping bag?

Sea to Summit Trek Tk2 : Key Features and Performance Breakdown

This is a good time to be a backpacker. There are so many quality sleeping bag options on the market right now. Sea to Summit Trek TkII is one such example.

While warmth performance and temperature range are probably the most critical features of any backpacking sleeping bag, they are not the only sticking points to consider. More and more companies are now designing sleeping bags that weigh less and offer more interior space to the occupant.

This phenomenon has resulted in an abundance of awesome sleeping bags perfect for long term, general traveling and for general backpacking in the mountains. The Trek TkII is one such bag.

First impressions are big with me, so I’ll give you mine to start. My first thought when I took the sleeping bag out of its stuff sack after setting up my tent was that it seemed quite narrow, despite hearing that it was a roomy sleeping bag catering to taller/wider folks. However, after giving it some time to regain its loft and puff out a bit, I started singing a different tune about the Sea To Summit Trek.

Let me set the stage for you: I had the Trek Tk2 bag out in early December in the mountains around northern Oregon. The low temperature during the night was 26 degrees F (-3.8 C). Before temperatures fell below freezing, a light storm rolled in and dumped a bit of rain on my tent.

Then the skies cleared, I cooked dinner (no Uber eats out in the sticks I’m afraid) and I duly settled into my Trek Tk2 18 for the night…

Trek TkII Warmth Performance

The night was notably cold. I was a bit worried. I will admit that despite knowing full well the specs of the Sea To Summit trek TKii sleeping bag, I am always a little dubious when sleeping in a new bag I am unfamiliar with – if it doesn’t perform as expected, then the night can be seriously rough.

Happily though, I was not disappointed with the Trek TkII. I managed to get a decent sleep despite the fact that forest mice kept flitting around my tent in search of food scraps throughout the night. One of the little buggers actually even chewed a tiny hole in my tent, but I digress.

The Sea To Summit Trek ii features high loft water-repellent 650-fill-power down, which retains 60% more loft and absorbs 30% less moisture than untreated down. In normal person language, it means that this technology provides a greater overall insulating layer without adding excessive weight.

As you probably know, down insulation pretty much stops doing its job when it gets wet. Having chemically (non-toxic) treated down is definitely a benefit if you camp in damp areas or sleep with multiple people inside the tent (condensation drips).

With temperatures in the mid 20’s (F) I employed the hood draws and had the bag almost totally zipped up, save for my eyes and nose. I appreciate the neck collar draft tube seals, which do a great job of keeping out breezes.

Over time, the down inside the sleeping bag can shift, leaving certain spots of the bag vulnerable to cold places. Though this was my first time using this specific model and all of the down fill was right where it should have been, the vertical chest baffles directly prevent down “migration” on the Sea To Summit Trek sleeping bag.

Warmth Performance Score: 3.5/5 stars.

Sea to Summit sleeping bag review

Temperature Range

Let’s talk about comfort vs. lower limit and the differences. Just because a sleeping bag is rated to 18 degrees F doesn’t mean that you will be comfortable sleeping in those kinds of temperatures. The limit rating is a rough indicator of the temperatures a sleeping bag can be taken to, without the scenario becoming dangerous .

The tested comfort limit of the Trek TkII is 30 F and the lower limit rating is 18 F. That goes to show you how different one person’s experience is to the next. I admit I wasn’t ultra toasty with temps hovering around 26 F, but with my normal below-freezing layers on, I was warm enough when totally sealed inside the Sea To Summit trek TKii 18 sleeping bag.

To be honest, though, I wouldn’t want to push the TkII beyond the temperatures I tested without also using a sleeping bag liner . It would just be too cold which would ruin my nights sleep.

For warmer summer adventures, the range of the Trek TkII is such that you won’t be too overheated in mild temperatures if you don’t zip the bag up all the way.

Trek TkII Weight and Packability

Regular : 2 lbs. 2 oz. (o.9 kilos)

Long : 2 lbs. 6 oz. (1.1 kilos)

With just over two pounds of packed weight, the Trek TkII delivers tremendous weight to warmth ratio. World travelers and seasoned backpackers alike can also appreciate the Tk II’s compressed volume: 6.1 liters!! That’s practically nothing guys.

Traveling the world with a sleeping bag no longer requires massive backpack space sacrifices. For the casual traveling trekker or camper, the Sea To Summit Trek TKii offers great packability value. As they pack down so small, there is no excuse to not travel with a sleeping bag these days.

Sea to Summit sleeping bag review

There are certainly lighter options out there, but once you start diving into the world of ultralight sleeping bag systems, you will likely want to retreat quickly due to the prices. Also, keep in mind that if you want a sleeping bag that can handle below-freezing temperatures, you’d be hard-pressed to find something under two pounds at a reasonable price.

If saving weight is a priority, be prepared to pay for it. If you don’t mind carrying a sleeping bag with very reasonable weight specs, the Trek TkII is a fine option.

Weight Score: 4.7/5 stars

Packability Score: 4.9/5 Stars

Insulation Material and Moisture Resistance

Obviously, the materials used when designing a sleeping bag go hand in hand with warmth performance.

The Trek TkII employs a mix of insulating, moisture fighting material that helps to keep you stay cozy and dry in damp conditions. Whilst no aspect of this sleeping bag is waterproof, I found that it held up to the light condensation build-up inside my tent very well. Even when the outside of the sleeping bag felt a bit damp after a night of me breathing hot air in freezing temperatures, the inside of the bag remained 100% dry.

The nylon shell fabric is treated with a long-lasting water repellent (DWR) finish that sheds moisture and helps block wind in case you are sleeping in the open air.

When it comes to down products, generally, the name of the game is do not get it wet . Water repellent down does have its limits so don’t go expecting to sleep outside in a light drizzle or worse. You will get wet, cold, and become miserable.

Another point worth noting surrounds the actual down feathers that are used. Sea to Summit uses down certified to the Responsible Down Standard (RDS), which means that the bird’s feathers that are keeping you so warm at night were not taken from a tortured or abused animal.

The water-resistance score reflected below may seem sub-par, but that’s because there is not a part of this sleeping bag that is actually waterproof.

Insulation Material Score: 3.8/5 Stars

Water Resistance Score: 2.9/5 Stars

Trek TkII Zippers and Pockets

The bane of any backpackers’ existence is snagging zippers. Ever had to get up to pee in the night and in your stupor snag the zipper, thus remaining trapped while your bladder expresses its displeasure? Yeah, that sucks.

I had one such “nature calls” moment during my night out with this sleeping bag. This is the ultimate zipper test: impatiently unzipping a sleeping bag when you are half awake and need to urinate. The zippers did just fine.

So what did Sea to Summit do to ensure smooth zipping bliss? The large draft tubes provide warmth, but they also provide the space for the zipper track to run straight, reducing snag potential.

Trek Tk2 review

Perhaps my favorite zipper feature of the whole sleeping bag is not the main zipper though. I tend to be a hot sleeper so when I am using a sleeping bag in normal summer temperatures, often I will have one leg out of the bag just to keep from overheating. The Trek TkII has the answer to this problem.

The integrated foot ventilation zipper allows you to open the bottom of the sleeping bag fully. This means you can stick both feet out of the bag if need be whilst keeping your core area covered. Congrats on the big win, Sea to Summit. I am the kind of sleeper to use this foot escape passage.

For storing a few small items inside the bag itself, there is a stash pocket. I kept my phone and a few camera batteries in there as cold weather is not good for electronics . If you are ever camping in freezing temperatures, I suggest you do the same unless you want to wake up to flat batteries.

Zipper and Pockets Score: 4/5 Stars

Sizing and Fit

As more and more companies explore designs outside the traditional “mummy” shape, a better, more comfortable sleeping experience is the end result. The Trek TkII has a rectangular cut, which does provide the occupant more wiggle room to work with. Generally speaking, this particular cut feels less claustrophobic and restrictive than ‘mummy’ style sleeping bags.

I will say that I did not find this sleeping bag to be exceptionally roomy. I am 5’10, slim, and weigh around 165 lbs (75kg), so I am not what you would call a particularly large human. Compared with other sleeping bags I have tested recently, like the Nemo Disco 15 , the “extra space” of the Trek TkII falls short. Granted, the rectangular shape will provide more room than a mummy bag, but don’t go expecting a massive spacial difference between the two different forms.

For taller folks, going with the long model is definitely the right call. If you are not over six feet, stick with the regular cut as you will get cold spots at the bottom if your body can’t fill the space.

Sizing and Fit Score: 3/5 Stars

Trek Tk2 review

Is the Sea to Summit Trek TkII 18 good for Thru-Hikers?

Short answer: yes! Due to the weight and wide temperature range it is very good. Having hiked the Appalachian Trail myself, I’d say that this sleeping bag is great for any aspiring (or seasoned) long-distance hiker. This opinion certainly rings true for the initial colder months when you begin hiking in the spring.

By June 2015 and somewhere in Northern Virginia , I mailed my sleeping bag home because it was just too hot and humid to use it. For the first few months, though, having a sleeping bag with at least a 30 degree F comfort rating is essential. It snowed on me May 1st in Mt. Rogers state park, so yeah, having a cold-weather sleeping bag is a must!

At 2.2 lbs, most thru-hikers would agree that’s an acceptable weight to carry for what you get.

I did not personally hike the Appalachian Trail with this sleeping bag. I was young and could not afford to buy a new sleeping bag at the time, so I trekked with an REI sleeping bag that weighed a little over three pounds.

Again, if you have the cash and want to splash out on something genuinely Ultralight, check out something by Zpacks or Feathered Friends . But do be ready for your bank balance to take a severe hit.

Thru-Hikers Score: 3.8/5 Stars

Trek TkII Price

Regular : $299.oo

Long : $318.00

I see a lot of sleeping bags. Prices can be all over the show. $300 is the average cost for a lightweight sleeping bag with this sort of temperature rating and quality. As mentioned, if you want something even lighter but with equal warmth, those sleeping bags are going to cost more.

The Trek TkII is an excellent entry-level sleeping bag for backpackers or travelers looking for something light, well-made, and reliable (the most important of all obviously).

If you think you will only use a sleeping bag once a year, I recommend going for a cheaper option like REI Siesta 20 .

Is having more interior space important to you? Check out my latest Nemo Disco 15 review . The Disco 15 costs about the same as the Trek TkII and provides more sleeping real estate for sure.

In the end, proper backpacking gear requires and investment, and I think the Trek TkII is reasonably priced for what it offers and what it doesn’t (excess weight).

Our GREATEST Travel Secrets…

After the dust settled on my night out with the Trek TkII, I was mostly pleased with the results it delivered.

This sleeping bag has a lot going for it. It wins big points in the categories of weight, packability, warmth, and price. However, it falls a bit short in relation to Sea to Summit’s promise that the Trek TkII is exceptionally roomy.

I found that for my own warmth needs, the Trek TkII exceeded the standard comfort rating by 4 degrees. As you should know now, what I experienced as warmth may be different for you. I still suggest pairing the Trek TkII with a sleeping bag liner if temperatures are predicted to fall under 30 degrees F.

I appreciate the versatility of the Trek TkII as it can be used for multi-month international travel as well as extended adventures into the mountains.

If you are trying to elevate your travel and/or backpacking game, the Sea to Summit Trek TkII may well be one of the best options in the middle of the road price range.

Thank you for the thorough, detailed evaluation. I’m shopping for a dual sport motorcycle trip and this sounds like it fits my needs. I, too, long for a well put together non-mummy bag. As I sleep “weird”, one of the important features for me is a side AND foot zip. Add in treated down and DWR material, good zippers and baffles and I’m almost home. I wish it had pad straps, but, nothing is ever perfect. Your review went a long way to getting me to the cash register!

The days are getting shorter, but you're not ready to pack up the camping gear and start praying for snow just yet. Whether winter is just around the corner or has just said its farewells, chilly shoulder-season backpacking trips won't be so chilly in the Sea To Summit Trek TkII Sleeping Bag. The 650-fill down insulation will keep you warm on cold nights, whether they find you in the desert or the mountains. And thanks to Sea To Summit's Ultra-Dry Down technology, your down insulation won't lose its loft if you find yourself in wet and cold conditions, or if your bag happens to get wet throughout your travels.

Verrtical baffeling in the chest prevents the down from shifting sideways as you sleep, keeping the warmth where it's most effective and not anywhere else, while a 3D sidewall baffle lets the down loft all the way to the very edge of the bag, ensuring total warmth. A draft collar around the neck and a full length draft tube along the zipper prevent cold temperatures from creeping in, and if you end up wanting some ventilation in the night you've got two-way functionality on the main and footbox zippers. To keep a phone or headlamp close by you've got an internal stash pocket, and to guarantee that your whole body is warm there's an adjustable mummy hood.

  • Hydrophobic down stays warm and dries quickly in damp conditions
  • Draft collar and tube keep warmth inside and cold weather out
  • Vertical chest baffles prevent down migration as you sleep

What do you think about this product?

March 18, 2024

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I personally love this bag. It reminds me of a NorthFace sleeping bag my dad gave that I had to throw away because I used it so much and was from the 80's. So this is not an objective review at all.

Trek Down Sleeping Bag

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I purchased the new sleeping bad for the 6 day OTLHT backpacking trip after a cold front was predicted. It arrived in time and just as advertised it was small and fit perfect in my backpack. I stayed nice and warm with plenty of room. I would buy the same backpack again. It was a great choice.

Down sleeping bag

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Great sleeping bag, especially for the price. Kept me warm even when it was windy and below freezing

May 31, 2023

Should have one

I took the TKII to the Everest base camp and Gokyo Lake route in April 2023 and used it every night for my 15 days trek. I live in Thailand where the weather is extremely hot so I'm not quite used to the freezing climate. However, this sleeping bag kept me warm quite well. On a very cold night, I put a sachet of warm hand to add up the heat between the foot box and it's very comfy and warms your toe for the long day after trekking. The TK II kept the heat and spread over the area where I put the warm hand in very well. To add up a little more, I'm not used to wearing a down or fleece jacket in the sleeping bag because it made me feel uncomfortable during sleeping so I end up wearing the base layer and slept in this TKII only. Size and weight are acceptable with the price but wish this TkII can be compressed and lighter a little more to save the space weight in the duffel.

The bag I've always needed.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This bag is great, it is super comfortable, is relatively roomy and packs very well. The fabric inside is very comfortable as well. Great bag.

Untested but nice so far

I bought this bag to replace my zero degree synthetic Kelty bag which was just too big to use when packing. I really need the warmth for the shoulder seasons because I sleep a little cooler. I have yet to take it out on a trip but just testing it out at home the bag is super comfortable and compresses into a small footprint taking up little space in my 70L bag. Having the extra space means I can carry more of the essentials in my bag rather than strapped to it. The fit is nice and roomy and the spacious footbox really appeals to me since I move around quite a bit. Looking forward to a late spring trip here in the Rockies.

Fantastically comfortable bag! It’s cut

Fantastically comfortable bag! It’s cut more generously than many mummy bags, making it maybe better for bigger folks. Warmth is very good, and the foot box is big enough for bigger feet or pointed toes without compressing the insulation

Awesome bag

Only used it twice so far. Nice and light. Packs well. Seems great so far!

Seemed like a great bag, but I got someone's return item

November 9, 2021

Very Dissapointed

I was looking for a quality 3 season bag and settled on the Trek TK2 after trying the marmot sawtooth and mountain hardwear bishop pass. I really wish I never bothered with this sleeping bag, I had a suspicion that the seams wouldn't hold up and I was right. After 3 days of use the down has started escaping through a few seems in the hood, one seem in particular quite substantially. For me that is a huge disappointment from a company that I expected a quality product from. Some additional dislikes, the zipper snags a lot more than the other models I tested, and the draft tubes are a little underwhelming. I wish this bag had a vaulted footbox but I can live without that. The bag is comfortable, more roomy than the bags I mentioned above, and the materials feel nice on the skin. It is also quite warm and has a good aesthetic, but the lack of quality is my main reason for a low rating. Hoping customer service comes through and provides a solution. I simply wish I could return it at this point.

Sea to Summit tests its sleeping bags for their temperature rating using the ISO 23537 test protocol.  This test gives two key ratings: Lower Limit and Comfort Rating.

trek tkii sleeping bag

Lower Limit: The lowest temperature at which a man should stay warm.

Comfort Rating:  The lowest temperature at which a woman should stay warm.

Sea to Summit Women’s-specific sleeping bags are listed using the Comfort Rating. Unisex bags are listed using the Lower Rating. For example, if the bag is rated at Lower Limit of 14°F | -10°C and Comfort rating of 27°F | -3°C, it should keep a woman warm down to 27°F | -3°C and a man warm down to 14°F | -10°C, if they are wearing warm clothes and using a good sleeping pad.

Remember: These ratings are just guidelines. Movement, weather, and your gear setup can all affect how warm you actually stay.

Pro Tip:  Think of your sleeping bag, pad, and liner as a system. If you expect 28°F | -2°C weather, choose a sleeping bag rated for 23°F | -5°C, use a sleeping pad with an R-Value of 3 or more, and add a liner for extra warmth.

Tapered rectangular shape: plenty of room for side sleepers

Technical Features

trek tkii sleeping bag

The second highest-lofting down used in any of Sea to Summit’s sleeping bags or quilts. 650+ Fill Power indicates that one ounce (30g) of down will re-expand to over 650 cubic inches after compression. Higher loft means that less down can be used to achieve the same temperature rating – important for performance sleeping bags. The loft and down quality/composition are independently tested by the International Down and Feather Laboratory (IDFL) – a copy of the certification is supplied with every Sea to Summit sleeping bag. The down is responsibly sourced and RDS certified and treated with our non-PFC Ultra-Dry Down™ treatment.

trek tkii sleeping bag

Our Free-Flow triple-zip design ensures your sleeping bag retains maximum warmth and efficiency when needed and multiple ventilation options when it's not. The half-zip on the right side of the bag (left side on women's bags) provides freedom of movement for both arms, additional ventilation and allows the top third of the bag to be folded down as a mini quilt when the mercury climbs higher than expected.

trek tkii sleeping bag

100% of the down used in our sleeping bags and quilts is independently certified to the Responsible Down Standard (RDS). The RDS certifies down against animal welfare requirements and tracks it from the source to the final product. The purchase of RDS certified products demonstrates demand for better animal welfare practices in the down and feather supply chain. Sea to Summit is certified to the RDS. To learn more about RDS visit https://textileexchange.org/standards/responsible-down/

trek tkii sleeping bag

Sea to Summit sleeping bag fabrics and insulation are made without PFAS compounds. The non-PFAS DWR finish on the shell helps prevent the insulation from becoming damp if the bag comes into contact with mositure, such as tent wall condensation. Ultra-Dry Down is a non-PFAS hydrophobic treatment that absorbs less moisture and dries more quickly. It does not affect the 'breathability' or the lifespan of the down and lasts through at least 20 washings. The down used in our sleeping bags is responsibly sourced. Sea to Summit Dry Bags, Stuff Sacks and Compression Bags use a non-PFAS Durable Water Repellent finish to help shed water. Big River bags use a non-PFAS PU coating.

Sea to Summit Trek TK II

rated 5.0 of 5 stars

Good blend of performance, weight, and price.

  • Lightweight
  • Semi-rectangular/semi-mummy shape
  • Very good value
  • Opens up fully for use as blanket, or for airing out.
  • Could be lighter
  • Zipper system can be confusing
  • Hood does not have an "in-between"—Either it lies flat, or you have to cinch it up fully

Spent WAY too much time searching for a sleeping bag that hit my top three "must haves"

  • Not constricting

Tried Big Agnes, North Face, a very attractive offering from Thermolite, REI's own brand, etc...  Finally decided on the Trek TKII after a test of the TK I version at my local REI.  It met my top three musts closely enough to earn a top rating.

This is a semi-rectangular bag, not a mummy bag. That means is the shape is mummy like, but the footbox is much wider than a traditional mummy bag. I am not claustrophobic, but I am also not comfortable enough to sleep when my feet are restricted from movement. This bag allows that without adding the weight and bulk of a rectangular bag.

Speaking of bulk, the bag compresses down excellently (probably because of the S2S compression sack included). Compact to the point it flops around in the sleeping bag compartment of my backpack if I do not pack other items in with it.

The bag keeps you warm. I have used it with a Big Agnes insulated pad everywhere from Death Valley—the Mesquite Springs campground (the coldest I ever felt camping BTW)—to Denali National Park. It has performed well in 28 degree temps and in a mountain pass with high winds. Warm enough that you do not want to get out, no matter how bad you need to wee. You do feel the chill when you approach the bag rating though, but that is normal from any bag.

The bag opens up fully, so it can be used as a blanket, and it makes it much easier to air it out after a few days in the backcountry. The zipper also allows you to open up the foot box independently, a real benefit for me. And, it is a separate independent zipper, not just a two way.

Cleaning is simple as putting it into the included cotton bag, and running it through a cold cycle.

The provided storage bag, stuff sack, and (as noted above) washing bag increase the overall value. The stuff sack is a Sea to Summit compression sack, not some cheapie bag with a drawcord.

The hood has, from my experience, two configurations. Lay flat, or fully cinched up. There is no in between where it is cinched up just enough to keep your camp pillow in place, but not enough to overheat your head.

The bag takes a bit of shaking to get it puffed up from storage. Not an excessive amount of time, but I do pull the bag out, then work on inflating my pad.

Because it is semi-rectangular, the bag is going to be heavier than a minimalist bag.

It does not live up to the temp rating, but that is normal. (When a bag is rated to +15 degrees, you add 10 degrees for comfort.)

Not much really. Most of the ugly happens in a lot of other brands/bags. Few of the highlights are:

  • The zippers tend to grab the bag material, but I have not found a bag that does not do that.
  • The two zippers (main/body one, and foot box specific one) overlap by several inches. In order to open the bag fully, or pack it away, you have to do some finger (and mental) gymnastics. Takes a few tries, but easy when you get it down pat.
  • When used as a blanket, the hood gets in the way, especially if two people are sharing.

Final notes:

Any piece of gear is a tradeoff between any number of factors. This bag did not hit any of my top three must haves at 100%, but it was above 90% for them. Other nice to haves include the storage and washing bag, a StoS compression sack for the trail, the double zippers, etc... Overall a solid piece of gear.

Have owned this bag since 2015, used dozens of times, mainly across Alaska, but in the lower 48 as well. Three- and five-night backpacking trips. Have tested or tried about a dozen bags before selecting this one.

trek tkii sleeping bag

Excellent down bag for a variety of conditions. It's lightweight, packs down small, does better in wet weather than other down bags, and is very comfortable.

  • Packs down small
  • Dries fast for a down bag
  • Roomy and comfortable
  • Good compression sack included

This is the fourth backpacking sleeping bag I've purchased, and the second down bag. I purchased it when backpacking in Chile in 2012, realizing that the very lightweight synthetic bag that I had with me at the time would not keep me warm further south in Patagonia. I used it camping in all conditions in southern Chilean Patagonia, as well as many other places in South America and the U.S., and this bag has proven itself again and again as one of the best pieces of gear that I own.

One of the most notable points about this bag is how small it compacts. Sea to Summit makes excellent compression sacks, and they include a custom compression sack with the bag (as well as a storage sack and a cotton sack to wash the bag in). When fully cinched down, the bag compresses to a ball about 7" in diameter. When I compare this to my other down bag, which was more expensive and supposedly warmer than this Sea to Summit Trek II, the other down bag was about double the size of the Trek II when fully compressed.

The Trek II does an excellent job in semi-cold weather. I've used this bag in snowy conditions numerous times, though probably not much lower than 20 deg F, and slept warmly. This bag seems to be warmer than other bags that are similarly rated — I'm not sure how they do that, but Sea to Summit's down or design does a better job than my similarly temperature-rated Sierra Designs synthetic bag and my RAB down bag. I've also gotten it a little wet and it was not too bad from a comfort or temperature perspective. In contrast, my RAB bag seems to get wet very easily and loses all of its heat when it does.

The boxy design is very comfortable if you don't like the full mummy-style sleeping bags. The hood cinches down well around your face, and helps a lot in colder conditions. And the tiny pocket near the top is great for keeping small items easily accessible. I keep a pair of small earplugs in there so I have them when I am sleeping next to friends that snore.

Lastly, I'll point out that the Sea to Summit bags have zippers that are compatible with one another for certain designs, if you get one Left zip bag and one Right zip. With this, my wife got the Sea to Summit Trek III, which is a slightly warmer bag than the Trek II, and we can zip the two bags together. The combined body heat with two bags connected adds a lot of warmth.

Thank you Sea to Summit for making an excellent product.

Sea to Summit Trek TkII

A big-guy favorite that packs small despite the extra internal dimensions..

Brand: Sea to Summit

Model: Trek TkII

[big-guy favorite]

Slim mummy bags are great for their thermal efficiency, but if you’re tall, wide, or both, you might want something with a little more elbowroom. Big guys loved this spacious, semi-rectangular, 650-fill down bag, which still packs reasonably small despite its increased internal dimensions. Our 6’2”, broad-shouldered tester raved about the extra room in the ever-so-slightly tapered footbox: “There was adequate kicking room so I didn’t feel like King Tut.” And he loved the option to vent the bottom of the bag and lay the hood fully flat for mild nights.

The self-described “very, very warm sleeper” appreciated this extended-temperature-range versatility on several 55°F nights in Channel Islands National Park, where he slept “comfortably without waking up in a pool of sweat.” You can even use the wrap-around zipper to open the bag fully and use it like a blanket for cabin camping. The 2D Permashell fabric, a 33-denier nylon with DWR finish, breathed extremely well on both steamy and chilly nights. “It did a magnificent job at keeping me nice and cozy down to 22°F,” said one warm-sleeping tester after a trip in Joshua Tree National Park. “I usually end up feeling clammy sometime around 2 a.m., but this bag breathed so well that I stayed dry.” That helps the down stay dry as well, preserving loft.

Downside: Due to the Trek’s semi-rectangular cut, it’s slightly heavier and a bit bulkier than other bags in its class (11 x 9 inches in its included compression sack), but for bigger-framed folks, it’s a worthy tradeoff. $289; 2 lbs. 11 oz.; 12°F; seatosummit.com Redefines the industry standard for the classic tapered tectangular sleeping bag, the TkII is a great all rounder.

The Sea To Summit Trek Tk II Sleeping Bag offers traditional comfort and value, with an anything but traditional design approach, the Trek™ Series sleeping bags are what we grab for globe-trotting adventures on a budget.

Vertical baffles over the chest section ensure the down insulation cannot migrate or shift to the outside of the bag during sleep, creating cold spots. A side block baffle construction maintains the 60/40 fill ratio, keeping more down on the top of the bag for maximum insulation. Lightweight fabrics reduce weight and packed bulk while the two-way #5 YKK full length side zip and separate foot zip, allows the bag to open out completely and double as a quilt. The foot zip is perfect for extra ventilation or to provide freedom of movement for your feet. The 3D side-wall baffle ensures that down can loft to the very edge of the bag, maximising insulation, while the panelled hood draws in tight when needed or lies flat for use in warmer weather. The oversized zipper draft tube uses anti-snag materials to prevent the zipper catching and the soft-touch 20D lining fabric is highly breathable yet also down proof. Completing the thoughtful design features of this classic down bag, Sea To Summit have included a large internal security pocket, perfect for keeping valuables close or batteries warm.

Q&a's (6), join 2 together 1 answer.

Hi do I need a left & right to join these together? I see you have left zippers only? Thanks

G'day Jason, The Trek, being a unisex bag, only has left zippers - if you want to join this to another bag you'd need a womens specific bag such as the Journey, or Ascent, which have the right hand zippers.

loft 0 answers

Is there a sleeping bag that has all of the Tk2 qualities ie. two zips, -1 lower temp and mummy bag but is 850 loft for a lighter bag?Otherwise this one would be amazing for the overland.

Compressed size 1 answer

Any chance of getting the measurements of this bag when it's compressed?

G'day Leah,

It's a little tricky to give an exact size of the compressed bag, as depending on how much you compress it you'll end up with a longer/skinny package, or a shorter/fatter package. Our packed dimension on the listing is in the uncompressed state, they will compress about one third of the size, and end up about 25cm long. Have a look at our product video too, right at the end, Ben shows the size compared to a 1L Nalgene bottle which might help gauge the size and shape too.

overland track 1 answer

Would this be suitable for the Overland Track in early March? I'm a REALLY warm sleep and can't decide between this or the TK1.

G'day Cameron,

I would suggest considering the Tk2 or TK3 as the Overland track has extremely variable weather, and it's not unusual for walkers to experience snow in March. We'd suggest at a minimum that you look at the TK2 (-1).

Seasons 1 answer

Is the bag a three season bag, or would it be too warm for summer?

G'day Amanda,

It probably depends on what kind of sleeper you are - hot or cold?  And also whereabouts you'd be camping?  The Tk2 does have the option to be fully opened out and used as a quilt or zipped with just the foot area open, so you have the versatility of being able to use it across the seasons.  Unless you're in a heatwave I reckon you'd be fine to use the Bag in summer.  Hope that helps :)

Is the Sil Nylon compression sack supplied with the bag waterproof? 1 answer

To keep bag dry

G'day Scott,

The compression bag supplied with the Trek Tk2 isn't waterproof so we'd suggest grabbing a  Compression Dry Sack in the small size.

  • Sea to Summit Trek II Sleeping Bag Regular Wide Review

In choosing a new sleeping bag (or for that matter most other pieces of hiking equipment) there will always be a comprise between features, weight and price. Generally the more you pay, the more features you will gain and the more compact and lighter the sleeping bag. Your choice becomes how much do you want to pay. Recently I had the opportunity to test out the Sea to Summit Trek II sleeping bag in the regular size-wide fit and here’s what I learnt.

As a sleeping bag the Sea to Summit Trek II range sits at the lower end of what you would consider the quality range with the normal RRP sitting at AUD $499. By no means is this a cheap bag but its is at the cheaper end of the range. With that comes a bag that is heavier and bulkier coming in at 1160 grams and with a compressed size of 7.4 litres which is on the larger size of high quality bags – as someone who typically uses a 50 litre pack or less, this sleeping bag is larger than I prefer.

This bag has the basics as far as features go; 650 loft down, draft tube along the main zip, a hood and a toe box with a zip. Everything you need to keep you warm and cosy during the colder months. This bag is rated at -8° Celcius if you are a male which makes it a very versatile bag and will suit just about all your needs. However, if you are female then the bag is only rated to -1° Celcius so it is potentially limited depending on your requirements.

This bag also lacks the draft tube located near the neck region that more expensive bags have within the Sea to Summit range.

Size-wise the regular wide bag I tried is suitable for individuals who are up to a maximum height of around 183 cm. I’m approximately 185 cm tall and would have preferred the longer size that suits hikers of up to around 198 cm. Width-wise this wide version has a more relaxed fit and is designed for a heavier set hiker or just someone who wants a bit of extra room to move.

Colour-wise this bag series is a blue colour which is reasonably neutral for most people. This bags comes in the Trek I, Trek II, and Trek III along with longer and wider versions. The warmer the bag, the darker the colour.

Like many of the bags in the Sea to Summit range this sleeping bag is designed to be zipped together with another Sea to Summit bag creating a couples bag but as I’ve mentioned in other Sea to Summit reviews, I haven’t seen anyone do this in the past five years while out on the trail – or at least no one has told me. One other handy feature this bag has is the internal stash/security pocket which is handy for keeping batteries warm on those cold nights or keeping valuables safe.

Overall this is a good quality sleeping bag at the cheaper end of the mid range. While lacking many of the features and being heavier than the more expensive bags, if your budget is limited and you still want a quality bag then this one is well worth considering.

  • Wider fit that suits a heavier set build of hiker
  • Large internal security pocket to keep all your personal bits safe
  • Zip Coupling which allows you to pair with another sleeping bag so you can snuggle up to your special friend
  • 650+ Loft ULTRA-DRY Down™ provides excellent insulation and compressibility
  • Vertical chest baffles prevent down migration and cold spots
  • Soft touch 20D lining fabric is lightweight and highly breathable, durable 30D nylon shell
  • Oversized zip draft tube with anti-snag materials
  • 3D side-wall baffle maximises down insulation right to the edge of the bag
  • Separate foot box zip so you can vent excess heat from the base of the bag
  • Excellently priced good quality bag
  • We Don't Like
  • A bit on the heavier side and not as compact as I like
  • A great sleeping bag for hikers who aren’t looking for an ultralight or ultra compact bag or don’t want to spend big dollars

Coroner offers new details about fatal slaying of 4 U of Idaho students after preliminary autopsies

The local coroner is offering more details about the brutal slaying of four college students in Moscow, Idaho, early Nov. 13.

The autopsies for Madison Mogen, 21, Kaylee Goncalves, 21, Xana Kernodle, 20, and Ethan Chapin, 20, were completed Nov. 16, Latah County Coroner Cathy Mabbutt said.

In an interview with NBC News Nov. 17, Mabbutt said the autopsy gave a clearer picture of what time the four were killed, their “extensive” wounds, and what the murder weapon was.

"It would have been early in the morning, sometime after 2 a.m., but still during the night," Mabbutt said, adding that there wasn't a medical way to determine who was attacked first, but investigators are "trying to put timelines together with other text messages and other technology."

She said that the murder weapon "would have been a bigger knife" to be consistent with their "pretty extensive" wounds.

(Left) Ethan Chapin, 20, and Xana Kernodle, 20. (Right) Kaylee Goncalves and Madison Mogen, both 21.

Mabbutt said that the victims showed "little bit of bruising" but "nothing significant." She added that some bruising "wouldn't be uncommon during a stabbing."

Mabbutt couldn't say how many times each victim was stabbed but said it was safe to say each of them had multiple wounds. She declined to say where on the body they were stabbed and later clarified that the victims were stabbed in different places and a different amount of times.

Mabbutt said it was likely the four had bled out in the home.

She said DNA samples have been taken from the scene and are being processed. When pressed, she said it was "possible" that some of the DNA being tested may not be of the four victims.

"There were nail clippings that were taken, and other ones that are being sent off, and so that will be processed," she said.

They are awaiting final autopsy results, which will not be available for another four to six weeks, pending toxicology. Mabbutt said in this case, the toxicology reports likely wouldn't be important to the investigation.

She added that the autopsies were completed by Spokane Medical Examiners Office — located in Spokane, Washington, about 90 minutes northwest of Moscow — but she responded to the scene a few hours after police were called.

"It’s pretty traumatic when there’s four dead college students ... who’ve been stabbed to death in one location," she said, adding that there was “quite a bit” of blood at the scene.

"I’ve been coroner for 16 years... we have had multiple (victim) murders in the past, but nothing, nothing like this," she said.

Police said that they did not have any suspects and were still looking for whoever was responsible for the deaths of the four friends.

“We cannot say that there is no threat to the community,” Moscow Police Chief James Fry said at a press conference on Nov. 16. “There is a threat out there, possibly.”

“We do not have a suspect at this time, and that individual is still out there,” he added. “We cannot say there is no threat to the community.”

Fry said that two additional roommates had been home at the time of the killings but they were not considered witnesses and are actively cooperating with the investigation. He said the 911 call came in at noon on Sunday morning — hours after authorities believe the four were killed.

The morning of Nov. 17, Latah County Prosecuting Attorney Bill Thompson told TODAY that it "certainly is possible" there could be more than one suspect in the case.

“The fact of the matter is whoever’s responsible for these murders is still at large,” he said. “The investigators do not know who that person is.”
