The Experience

Sardinia’s arts have been tempered by the island’s rich culture and rugged topography. Shielded from outside influences, Sardinian musical traditions are like nothing else on the planet and they fuel a contemporary fusion scene. Literary legends such as Nobel-prize-winning Grazia Deledda reel you into the intrigues of small-town life in the wilds of mountainous Barbagia. Up and down the island you will encounter festivals where folk dancing, hand-carved masks and flamboyant costumes keep Sardinia’s one-of-a-kind heritage very much alive.

Food & Wine

Sardinia actually produces the largest number of grapes of all Italian regions – more than 100 different local grapes. Sardinian food ranges from seafood, freshly baked breads, olives, and wine to roasted suckling pig, cheeses, and ice cream. The distinctive flavors of Sardinia are not just Italian in origin but a complete mix and hybrid of various historical influences. Starting with the Phoenicians and followed by Carthaginians, Romans, Arabs, Moors, and Spanish, among others, the island was occupied by nearly every Mediterranean power for more than 2,500 years, until it became part of Italy in 1861. For a relatively small island, it’s amazing how much ingredients, recipes, and cooking methods vary from village to village.

Sardinia is the second-largest island in the Mediterranean Sea (after Sicily and before Cyprus). The coast of Sardinia (1,149 miles long) are generally high and rocky, with long, relatively straight stretches of coastline, many outstanding headlands, a few wide, deep bays, many inlets and with various smaller islands off the coast.

Due to the variety of its ecosystems, which include mountains, woods, plains, largely uninhabited territories, streams, rocky coasts and long sandy beaches, the island has been defined metaphorically as a micro-continent. In the modern era, many travelers and writers have exalted its beauty, remained untouched until the contemporary age and immersed in a landscape that houses the vestiges of the Nuragic civilization.

Happiness Promise

There are hundreds of thousands of guides and tour operators around the world. Figuring out who to trust is stressful and hard.

That’s why we started 10Adventures Tours, we’re here to make it easy to find a great guide or tour operator. We handpick the best local guides and tour operators for 10Adventures, working to ensure you have great guides and a great trip.

We know it sucks to show up in a different country and find out the tents are junk, the guide incompetent or the route different from what we thought we were getting.

We want to give our users peace of mind that you’ll have a great trip and offer a guarantee that we will work with you to make it right.

How does this work? Well, if you feel that something about your trip didn’t’ meet your expectations, let us know. We will then work to gather the details and figure out where things went wrong. If something indeed wasn’t as described, or went wrong with your trip, and the problem was within the control of either oursleves, the guide or the tour company, we will then work out a refund with you that’s proportional to the scale of the problem.

Obviously the best way to make a great trip is to tell your local guide or tour operator and give them the chance to fix the solution while you are on your trip. Most things can be solved by telling your guide when the issue develops. If that doesn’t solve it, then email us right away. Please don’t wait to voice your concerns until the trip is over, as it’s much harder to solve issues after the fact.

We work hard to make sure you have a great trip. If something isn’t right, please email  [email protected]  and we will get to work right away.

Sardinia by Bike Tour Details

Sardinia by bike overview.

The Sardinia by Bicycle tour is one of the most stunning ways to explore the island of Sardinia. Enjoy cycling from coastline to ancient ruins to cozy fishing villages all from the saddle of your bike.

The Sardinia by Bicycle tour begins in Cagliari, best known for the Castello, a fortified Medieval district situated on a hillside above the rest of the town. Visit the famous 13th Century cathedral in town, or take a tour of the National Archaeological Museum to learn about the Roman and Byzantine history of the region. The cycling tour will then begin with a stunning ride along the coast to the port of Portovesme.

Take a ferry to San Pietro, where the distinct culture of the people makes you feel as if you’re in a new region altogether. Sip excellent wine on Sant’Antioco Island before looping lazily around the entire island on your bike. Trade your steed for a real horse to explore, or take a boat excursion across the sea. Dip into caves, pack a fun picnic lunch, or take some time to explore the historic churches on the island.

After making your way to Porto Pino through the countryside and picturesque vineyards, you can relax on the famous Porto Pino Dunes Beach, before traveling along the breathtaking route known as the Costa del Sud to visit some well-preserved Roman mosaics.

The delights of the Sardinia by Bicycle tour are endless, and you won’t want to leave the glimmering sea of Pula when it’s time to head home.

Sardinia by Bike Itinerary

Arrival in cagliari.

Welcome to Sardinia! You’ll spend the day in Cagliari, a town best known for the Castello, a fortified district situated on a hillside high above the rest of the city. Take some time to explore the stunning architecture that can be found here, including the 13th Century cathedral, before heading over to the National Archaeological Museum to investigate artifacts dating from the Bronze Age through to the Byzantine Empire.

Transfer to Nebida and Ride to Sant’Antioco

After a filling breakfast, you will transfer to the town of Nebida to begin your cycling adventure. Here, you will cycle along the coast for 25km to the port of Portovesme, before taking a ferry ride to the lovely island of San Pietro. After exploring the harbour town of Carloforte and its Genoese heritage, you will take another ferry to Calasetta, to explore the beautiful wines of Sant’Antioco.

Sant’Antioco loop

You have plenty of options today! You can ride your bike all the way around the island, taking a break at whichever inlet strikes your fancy for a picnic. Maybe you’d prefer to go out fishing, or trade your bike for a horse and explore the island on horseback. Perhaps you’d just like to lay back at the beach and let the sun warm you- it’s up to you!

Ride from Sant’Antioco to Porto Pino

The first stop on this day of the tour is the village of Tratalias, where you will visit the church of S. Maria di Montserrat. Take some time to explore the ancient village and visit the still intact Baroque arches that once served as entrances to the citadel. From here, you will cycle through the picturesque vineyards and surrounding countryside on the way to Porto Pino.

Porto Pino Loop

Today is another day that is completely at your own leisure. One option is to take a ride inland to explore several charming villages, such as Sant’Anna Arresi, and stop for a relaxing picnic lunch. After your ride, head down to the Porto Pino dunes to lay out in the sun along this famous beach with pink sand.

Cycle from Porto Pino to Teulada

Today, you’ll continue your cycling tour of Sardinia with a trip to the villages of Masinas and Santadi, the latter of which is home to a famous winery. From here, you will ride past the fascinating caves at Zuddas before taking a quiet trail to Teulada, which is known for terracotta goods and beautiful embroidery. Need any souvenirs?

Teulada to Pula

Muster your energy, because today is some of the best cycling of the trip! You’ll ride along the Costa del Sud, an undulating trail with stunning views of the ocean and inlets. If you get tired, just stop for a dip in the crystal clear water. You’ll ride to Pula, which is close to the archaeological site of Nora. The site holds impeccably preserved Roman mosaics, and it’s a fascinating stop in the afternoon.

Arrivederci, Sardinia!

Your last breakfast in Sardinia may feel like it comes too soon, but that just means you’ll have to return. Safe travels!

The North Circle: a road biking tour that includes all the highlights of north Sardinia in one loop Giovanni Lamieri, tour designer at SardiniaCycling

Join us on an exhilarating biking adventure around the mesmerizing northern end of Sardinia. Beginning in the vibrant town of Olbia, your journey takes you on a thrilling counterclockwise expedition that promises an immersive exploration of the island's diverse landscapes and rich cultural tapestry.

From Olbia, set your wheels in motion towards the picturesque town of Castelsardo, passing through the charming village of Aggius. As you pedal along, the stunning coastal vistas and the rustic charm of the countryside will accompany your every turn. Continuing your voyage, the route leads westward to the historic marvel of Alghero, offering a delightful blend of medieval heritage and coastal beauty.

Traverse the captivating landscapes as you make your way to Santu Lussurgiu, a tranquil haven that exudes Sardinia's authentic essence, passing through the enchanting town of Bosa.

The journey then ventures inland towards Fonni, a mountainous gem that treats you to panoramic views and a taste of the island's rugged, untamed beauty. Regaining the embrace of the eastern coast, the path winds its way to the seaside allure of Cala Gonone, where the azure waters greet you.

The expedition isn't just about the coastal splendor; it delves back into the mountains with a stage to Bitti, to enjoy the last bit of typical inner Sardian hospitality before heading back to where the circle of your adventure completes, encompassing the northern tip of Sardinia.

Throughout this 'challenge' level trip, the journey is complemented by exceptional accommodations and delectable meals, offering a blend of comfort and culinary delight to complement your cycling escapade. Each day of your biking adventure will unravel the island's diverse tapestry, from the seaside panoramas to the mountainous vistas, complemented by the warmth of Sardinian hospitality and the sumptuous flavors of its cuisine. Get ready to pedal through history, nature and culture, embracing the thrill of the journey and the joy of exploration.

Pay attention, this trip has a very smart design: for the self guided or private trips, it's in fact possible to make the trip start either from Olbia or Alghero. Or to make a custom and shorter version from Alghero to Olbia, for example.

This is more than just a cycling tour—it's a vibrant tapestry of Sardinian life, where the whispering winds, rugged cliffs, and azure waters orchestrate a symphony for the senses. Discover the essence of Sardinia through the rhythm of your pedals and the warmth of its hospitality.

Sardinia is a region known for mild Mediterranean weather. It generally features warm, dry weather which makes these rides particularly enjoyable. The spring and fall can see the highs range from the 18s to 25s (Celsius), while the lows are generally between 14 and 18. Summer highs are generally between 28 and 25. We always recommend bringing along riding layers and even a bit of rain (might happen in Spring and Fall) gear so you can keep riding comfortably throughout the day.

Sardinia Cycling arranges group transfers from and to the closest airport for the trip: Olbia. Individual transfers can be also planned and the cost might depend from the departure or arrival location, from the transfer time and it can also be influenced by the presence of bulky luggage, like a bike case. Other transport option is public transport. About this last opportunity, we suggest you using Google Maps and select 'public transport' from and to your selected destination. In any case, we're ready to help you selecting the quicker, smoother and most cost effective solution.

Sometimes your trip on Sardinia simply isn’t long enough! Extend your stay for the best vacation possible. If you wish to spend a few days in our lovely island either before or after your trip, and need assistance making those plans, we're available help. Self guided and supported trips can be extended too and that can happen in any intermediate location along the itinerary: we can help selecting the best one!

One thing riders learn soon is that Sardinia is hilly. The terrain is varied, with gradual and short, or very long and progressive climbs throughout the week. North Circle Bike Tour is best suited for our 'Challenge' riders. The routes have been designed to avoid busy roadways, that are very rare in a large and sparsely populated island. However, very little urban riding and short sections of busy roads are unavoidable in Sardinia.

South Sardinia, especially its west coast, is a top spot for cycling. The area’s mining and fishing traditions have preserved its wild and untouched nature, keeping it free from the large resorts often found along such stunning coastlines.

Cycling in South Sardinia means riding up and down traffic-free backroads, surrounded by green nature. The landscape changes at every turn, from intimate coves to big beaches with sandy dunes that echo the desert.

But there’s more to this bike tour than the natural scenery. It’s a cycling holiday that shows you the diverse cultures of this part of the island: the mining heritage, the Genoese influence in Carloforte, the fishing traditions of Sant’Antioco, and, finally, a celebration with a grand dinner in Cagliari, the island’s capital.

What to Expect riding on the South of Sardinia

  • The dune of Piscinas
  • The Sulcis mines of Ingurtosu and Montevecchio
  • A fresh fish dinner in Sant'Antioco
  • Porto Pino and the South Coast
  • The Carignano grape and its unique wine
  • Dinner in Cagliari downtown

Bike Tour Itinerary

Day 1: welcome to sardinia | warm up ride.

Set you up for starting the bike tour in Sardinia

Upon your arrival in Sardinia, most likely at Cagliari airport , we will meet you and then take a one-hour transfer to Arbus . Since your accommodation is a good agritourism (farmhouse), you’ll be into the culture, nature, food, and history of Sardinia from the very first moment of your bike holiday .

Once you’ve checked in, we’ll hold a briefing that covers the entire bike tour , providing day-to-day details. You’ll receive our exclusive navigation system, guiding you throughout your bike trip. After a bike fitting , you can take a short ride to warm up . Finally, you can wrap up your day with a dinner featuring the typical cuisine of Sardinia .

Overnight: Arbus Included: Aperitif

Day 2: The loop of the Costa Verde | Cycling 55/75Km/1000/1500m

Pedaling through the Geo-Park of Sardinia

You are in Costa Verde , one of the most stunning and wild areas of Sardinia. This region has been defined by mining for centuries, and its legacy is preserved today in the  Geo Mining Park . During your bike ride, you’ll pass through ghost towns like Ingurtosu and Montevecchio that appear frozen in time. A short gravel section brings you to Piscinas , a beach that seems a desert thanks to its dunes visible from the space ! You’ll then follow the coastline, taking a nice climb surrounded by Mediterranean bushes that will lead you again to the Arbus plateau and back to your hotel.

Overnight: Arbus Included:  Breakfast

Day 3: From Arbus to Portoscuso | Cycling 65Km/950m

From the mining history to the fisherman’s culture

Good start today! After traversing the Bidderdi pass, your cycle tour in South Sardinia follows with an awe-inspiring descent to Buggerru, one of the emblematic towns of Sardinia’s mining culture. The first climb of the day takes you toward the hilltop, where you can capture a stunning panoramic view of the town, port, and beach, creating a memorable souvenir photo. You can stop by Cala Domestica beach , once a mining port and now a charming cove. You’ll climb a few more kilometers before diving into a spectacular descent with a breathtaking sea view toward Masua. A rollercoaster ride until Nebida, where you can take a break at the famous walk by the sea, and another thrilling downhill brings you to Funtanamare, a beautiful beach. The last leg of your bike ride brings you to the industrial town of Porto Scuso, Your gateway to the upcoming days by the fisherman’s traditions of South Sardinia, where you must enjoy a fish-based dinner, of course !

Overnight: Portoscuso Included:  Breakfast

Day 4: The loop of 2 islands | Cycling 45Km/450m

Discovering Carloforte and its culture

The two islands in Sardinia’s southern region have distinctly different histories. Sant’Antioco has been an important city since the Roman era and shares its fishing culture with San Pietro and Carloforte, home to a community of Genoese origin. After a 30-minute ferry ride to Carloforte, your bike ride will start taking in the picturesque scenery of saltpans with pink flamingos and roads overlooking the sea.  Your bike tour of the island of San Peter will culminate with a delectable tuna-based lunch or the Cascà – a type of couscous with fish. After your return ferry ride to Calasetta, you’ll complete the loop by cycling towards the south of Sant’Antioco.

Overnight:  Sant’Antioco Included:  Breakfast

Day 5: From Sant'Antioco to Teulada | Cycling 55Km/570m

Pedaling in the peaceful countryside of Carignano grape

Our  bike ride in the South of Sardinia starts by departing from Sant’Antioco. After crossing the bridge to Sardinia mainland, we will be greeted by the scenic salt works with our riding mates, pink flamingos . We will stop in the charming village of Tratalias Vecchia, which revolves around the stunning Romanesque Cathedral of Santa Maria. Our route will lead us through the  Sulcis countryside , where we will encounter artichoke fields and Carignano vineyards. The day will come to a close in Teulada, where we will stay in an Agriturismo (holiday farm) and have the opportunity to  savor a traditional Sardinian dinner .

Overnight:  Teulada Included:  Breakfast Dinner

Day 6: The amazing Costa del Sud | Cycling 47Km/655m

Cycling in a postcard landscape

Today marks the final leg of your bike tour in South Sardinia, and it promises to be a “Gran Finale”. You’ll start your bike ride from Teulada, heading straight towards the coast, where you’ll pedal a scenic coastal road leading you to the tourist resort of Chia. Riding this rollercoaster route, you’ll recognize some of the most renowned beaches in Sardinia , such as the Tuerredda. A photo on the beach and indulging in some ice cream is an absolute must!

Beyond Chia and its famous beaches, you’ll cycle toward Pula, the area’s most significant town, where you’ll have the opportunity to marvel at the ruins of the ancient city of Nora . During the tourist season, Pula is a vibrant town with bars and restaurants, providing you with the perfect ambiance to celebrate the end of your bike tour in South Sardinia .

Overnight:  Pula Included:  Breakfast

Day 7: A day riding in Cagliari | Cycling 25Km/250m

Discovering the Capital of Sardinia

Your day trip in Cagliari starts by departing from your Pula hotel with a transfer to the heart of downtown Cagliari. From here, begin your ride toward the Molentargius Park, also called Saline Park. The park remains a popular destination among the locals for sports, walking, cycling, and relaxation. Surrounded by flora, fauna, and gravel roads, you will forget that the city is around you.

The park is known for its urbanized flamingos, who exude confidence and elegance as they go about their daily lives, being photographed by tourists and locals.

The ride advances towards Poetto Beach, a lively spot with colorful bars, restaurants, and entertainment throughout the year. Don’t miss the chance to take a break for a gelato or a light lunch by the beach.

Your bike ride at Poetto ends at Marina Piccola, the city’s tourist port and its promenade. It provides a breathtaking panoramic view of the Golfo di Cagliari, with the city’s symbol, La Sella Del Diavolo, in the backdrop.

Finally, you’ll head into Cagliari’s town center, cycling along the bike path from Poetto Beach to the historical center.

Overnight:  Cagliari Included:  Breakfast

Day 8: Departure from Cagliari

Why Cycling in Sardinia?

Cycling in Sardinia because the weather and the roads are perfect for biking. Sardinia , despite being the second largest mediterranean island, only counts about 1,6 million inhabitants, making it one of the italian regions with the lowest population density . Add that this island has never been a destination for the mass tourism. You have the recipe that allows Sardinia to the preserve its "off the beaten track" status . Chilometers of coast line with no human settlement, forests of mediterranean vegetation, the mines abandoned buildings absorbed by the nature. And again the silences, the colours, the scents, and the people, the food, is an endless list.

A cycling holiday in Sardinia is the best solution to discover this country!

An island that quite rightly has been defined a small continent, thanks to the crazy variety of ever changing landscapes  in such a small area.

Our video about cycling holidays in Sardinia

Sardinia is the perfect destination for all types of active tourism be it cycling tours or hiking tours :

  • Spectacular sceneries set in a truly unspoilt landscape,
  • Mild Mediterranean weather that allows comfortable outdoor activities all year round,
  • Well protected environment, low population density and hardly no development of heavy industry,
  • Absence of motorized traffic on roads.

These factors are what make Sardinia one of the best cycling destinations in Europe , and the quiet roads also mean your active holiday will be safer . During the guided cycling and walking tours, our guides will introduce you to the best that the area has to offer. Even if you prefer to explore the routes independently, it is very easy to find the authentic side of Sardinia . Sardinia is a land that is very rich in traditions which are still strongly felt by the local population. There is never any shortage of surprises during our cycling or hiking tours . You can often find yourself in the middle of a village festival or a religious procession where men, women and children dress in traditional Sardinian clothes. The Cabras San Salvatore is celebrated in the first week of September with a barefoot race, and guests have the pleasure becoming part of the crowd that flocks in from all over Sardinia to enjoy this moment. During the carnival period before Easter, horse rides like the Sartiglia in Oristano or Sa Carrela Annanti in Santulussurgiu involve tourists, who are dragged in from the audience to become one with the local population.

When taking breaks from the walking or cycling tours in small local bars, Sardinians never fail to ask cyclists if everything is ok or if they need a hand with their bikes. They rarely speak English, but always have a friendly smile. This is particularly common in places less affected by mass tourism: areas where Dolcevita also offers cycling and walking tours. One example among many is the tour of the abandoned mining areas . Sardinia is one of the most ancient lands in Europe, and is rich in minerals that were previously exported throughout Europe and the world. Whole towns and mining villages were founded during those years but are now abandoned, creating a picturesque backdrop to the dunes and beaches of the Costa Verde.

Choose  your favorite active holiday , can be mountain biking , road cycling or if you like a easy cycling tour hire a ebike . We are sure the will be a great cycling .

Dolcevita Bike Tours manage cycling holidays in Sardinia everywhere. In from the noth west with the cycle tour MIne of Memories, from the noth east following the Costa Smeralda Classic. All cycling trips are guided or self guided. Usually the cycle route hotel to hotel often is ride in secondary roads, with few cars and local people working in the fields.

What eat in Sardinia

A delicious starter with tipical bottarga is the best for the end of a great cycling day

As in all of Italy, many different types of pasta are featured in the first courses. Carbohydrates are essential for cyclists and walkers, as they are slow to burn and provide the energy needed to spend the entire day on the road or hitting the pedals. If you want to try something unique, ask for "is culurgiones", a kind of ravioli with ricotta and wild chard or potatoes: when served with red sauce or butter, sage and pecorino, they won’t disappoint.

One of the most famous meat dishes in Sardinia is the famous "Procceddu arrostiu", roast suckling pig, which is strictly cooked on a spit over hot coals. This tasty protein is important for tackling the tough stretches during an active holiday.

Fiore Sardo DOP - Sardinia Cheese

The dishes are different on the island of Carloforte, which have different origins, as does the local language, and the local cuisine there is characterised by couscous dishes with pesto sauce. Don’t miss out on the dishes made with the tuna caught in Sardinia from late May to October.

If you like cheese, don't miss to try Fiore Sardo DOP. Is an excellent table cheese, when consumed young, as well as being a good grating cheese after maturation. Fiore Sardo was recognised as a Denominazione Tipica cheese in 1955, awarded the Denominazione d’Origine in 1974; in 1996 it obtained PDO rating. It is the Sardinian sheep’s milk cheese which is still made using the ancient techniques mentioned in the 4th century A.D., by that erudite Latin scholar, Palladio Rutilio Tauro Emiliano.

Sardinia weather

Sardinia enjoys a mild Mediterranean weather that allows comfortable cycling all year round . The most popular times of the year are spring and autumn. In spring you will find blooming flowers, sharp colours, and amazingly bright skies. Water at sea is fresh, days are long and and peaceful.

For plant lovers, spring is the perfect time to book a cycling or walking holiday in Sardinia. Over 60 wild orchids and about 350 endemic species comprise the more than 2400 entities that make the island a magnificent garden, and one of the most beautiful areas in Italy for outdoor activities.

In September and October you will find the pastures turned brown and yellow by the summer sun, and very warm water at sea, allowing for splendid swims during the cycling or at sunset, when it takes an endless, magic time to the sun to dip below the horizon.

Sardinia weather year round is Mediterranean, so is perfect for outdoor activitities. Walking tours or cycling holidays can be runned all year round. We suggest spring for colors and flower perfume and autumn for who prefer cooler weather.

Mauro and his excellent crew provided us a most memorable bicycle tour from Alghero to Gergei. He is truly a veteran and arranged excellent hotels, restaurants, food and wine tastings, cooking classes and a week cycling through back roads of gorgeous land and seascapes through this charming island. Delectable antipasti, the most succulent roast pig you’ll ever eat, seafood, lamb and lots of Vermentino were a gourmand’s dream. The level of professionalism could not have been greater. Beyond this, all three of these men were just exceptional people, sensitive to our needs as a group of 15 and very caring when small problems would occur. I cannot recommend this company more highly. Furthermore, Mauro is more than willing to arrange varios trips including self-guided brief or longer tours through much of Italy and nearby islands. The prices are very fair and the experience unforgettable! E un viaggio favoloso!

These guys were fantastic. Great bikes, incredibly informative and so helpful. Hotels were amazing and restaurant recommendations superb.

Welcome to Sardinia

Your guides will meet you at the Olbia airport for a short transfer to our first hotel. Check-in at this classically Mediterranean property, located right on the famed Costa Smeralda, where we’ll get fitted to our bikes before our first ride. Our warmup route follows the cerulean coast before heading inland to our friend Max’s hidden winery. Here, we’ll have our first taste of Sardinia’s flagship varietals, Vermentino and Cannonau, paired with local cheeses and a home-cooked lunch. After lunch, opt to visit some prehistoric stone edifices called nuraghe or bike directly back to the hotel to get settled. Tonight’s dinner sets the tone for the week: a fresh seafood feast enjoyed as the sun sets over the Mediterranean.

Meals: Lunch / Dinner Destinations: Cannigione, Arzachena Accomplished: 14 miles / 23 km, elevation gain: 1,440 feet / 439 meters Longer Option: 25 miles / 41 km, elevation gain: 1,768 feet / 539 meters Accommodations: Aethos Sardinia

La Maddalena

Pedal up the coast today and catch a short ferry to La Maddalena, part of the archipelago just off the main island. We’ll bike in and out of hidden bays with views of the rugged coastline, then cross the causeway to Caprera, Maddalena’s sister island. Caprera was the historic home of Giuseppe Garibaldi—one of modern Italy’s most fascinating figures—so we’ll spend some time learning about his life and legacy. This afternoon, board a private yacht and experience Costa Smeralda’s glamour as we swim in secluded coves. After a simple and satisfying lunch on deck, we’ll sail right to our hotel. You’re free to choose your own restaurant for dinner, and our guides are happy to recommend their favorites in town.

Meals: Breakfast / Lunch Destinations: Palau, Maddalena, Caprera Accomplished:  22 miles / 36 km, elevation gain: 1,647 feet / 502 meters Longer Option: 29 miles / 46 km, elevation gain: 2,083 feet / 635 meters Accommodations: Aethos Sardinia

The Ancient Interior

This morning we head inland to explore the island’s center—over the next few days, we’ll see how Sardinia’s interior is replete with natural beauty that’s been respected and preserved for centuries. Our ride begins in a small mountain village, following a scenic ribbon of pavement that hugs mountainous bluffs and peers all the way to the sea. After a quick coffee in the little town of Lula, we’ll keep cruising to lunch at a whitewashed restaurant that produces its own wine and truly sets the standard for celebrating regional cuisine. Afterward, it’s just a few more miles to our next hotel—an incredible property devoted to upholding Sardinia’s simple, old-world traditions.

Meals: Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner Destinations: Sant’Anna, Lula, Oliena Accomplished: 38 miles / 62 km, elevation gain: 3,283 feet / 1,001 meters Longer Option: 43 miles / 69 km, elevation gain: 3,355 feet / 1,023 meters Accommodations: Su Gologone

Painted Walls of Orgosolo

Today’s ride visits Sardinia’s up-and-coming wine region where local producers are crafting award-winning Cannonau. First, we’ll ride through Orgosolo, a village that stands apart thanks to its ubiquitous murals: the public paintings first emerged in the 1960s and today they number well over 150. A local guide will take us on a different kind of gallery tour, strolling through this open-air museum and explaining the significance of standout murals. Continue cycling through the vineyards to lunch at one of Sardinia’s emerging wineries, then choose to transfer or finish riding the loop back to Su Gologone. Tonight, we’ll taste Sardinia’s classic wood-fired fare as we prepare dinner alongside a lovely local.

Meals: Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner Destinations: Orgosolo, Mamoiada, Oliena Accomplished: 32 miles / 51 km, elevation gain: 4,061 feet / 1,238 meters Longer Option : 43 miles / 70 km, elevation gain: 4,402 feet / 1,342 meters Accommodations: Su Gologone

Supramonte to the Sea

We’ll set off for the Supramonte mountain range and the most epic riding of our trip, full of staggering scenery on a 3% grade as the road climbs gently along the Goroppu Gorge. At the top of the Genna Silana pass (featured in the 2017 Giro d’Italia), we’ll celebrate our feat of the week before enjoying the sweet reward: a 36-kilometer downhill to the coastal village of Santa Maria Navarrese. Check in to our beachfront hotel, take a swim at the private beach, and toast to a wonderful week at our final dinner.

Meals: Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner Destinations: Dorgali, Baunei, Santa Maria Navarrese Accomplished: 46 miles / 74 km, elevation gain: 4,146 feet / 1,264 meters Shorter Option: 35 miles / 56 km, elevation gain: 2,811 feet / 857 meters Accommodations: Lanthia Resort

A si bìri, Sardinia!

Wake up early to enjoy the peace and quiet in Santa Maria Navarrese. Your guides will transfer you back to the Olbia airport and see you off to your next destination.

Meals: Breakfast Destinations: Santa Maria Navarrese, Olbia

Hotel Lido Beach, Torregrande di Oristano

Hotel Lido Beach provides accommodations with a seasonal outdoor swimming pool, free private parking, a garden and a terrace. Featuring a restaurant, the 4-star hotel has air-conditioned rooms with free WiFi, each with a private bathroom. The property has room service, a concierge service and luggage storage for guests.

I contacted Mauro to arrange a self guided bike trip. I had an excellent e-bike and my husband loved the road bike provided for us. The planning was made easy by BTS staff whom made excellent suggestions and answered all my questions by email efficiently and quickly. His hotel choice was good to exceptional – especially our first hotel – Villa Mosca – in Alghero! Each day our luggage was transferred and in our room at our next destination before we were there! I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Mauro and Bike Tour Sardinia to anyone. We’ve done several other tours with other companies and this was definitely the best one yet! We would like to return to Sardinia one day! Stunningly beautiful island, wonderful friendly people, and excellent food and wine!

Beautiful landscape, unique boutique hotels, great food and wonderful biking, basically describes our experience with Bike Tour Sardinia. We went from Alghero to Oristano, exploring the medieval towns and coast. Mauro arranged a relatively seamless and fabulous self-guided adventure, being consistently available, helpful and responsive. We had both e-bikes and standard, but for me, the e-bike added ease and the ability for further exploration and smiles. I highly recommend Bike Tour Sardinia as a way to explore this beautiful island.
