South Sardinia, especially its west coast, is a top spot for cycling. The area’s mining and fishing traditions have preserved its wild and untouched nature, keeping it free from the large resorts often found along such stunning coastlines.
Cycling in South Sardinia means riding up and down traffic-free backroads, surrounded by green nature. The landscape changes at every turn, from intimate coves to big beaches with sandy dunes that echo the desert.
But there’s more to this bike tour than the natural scenery. It’s a cycling holiday that shows you the diverse cultures of this part of the island: the mining heritage, the Genoese influence in Carloforte, the fishing traditions of Sant’Antioco, and, finally, a celebration with a grand dinner in Cagliari, the island’s capital.

Cycling the West Coast of Sardinia from Alghero all the way south to Cagliari. Your bike holiday will bring you to Bosa, the Sinis peninsula and Cabras, the Green Coast, and the islands of Sant’Antioco and San Pietro.
Or continue as guest.
Cycling in Sardinia because the weather and the roads are perfect for biking. Sardinia , despite being the second largest mediterranean island, only counts about 1,6 million inhabitants, making it one of the italian regions with the lowest population density . Add that this island has never been a destination for the mass tourism. You have the recipe that allows Sardinia to the preserve its "off the beaten track" status . Chilometers of coast line with no human settlement, forests of mediterranean vegetation, the mines abandoned buildings absorbed by the nature. And again the silences, the colours, the scents, and the people, the food, is an endless list.
A cycling holiday in Sardinia is the best solution to discover this country!
An island that quite rightly has been defined a small continent, thanks to the crazy variety of ever changing landscapes in such a small area.
These factors are what make Sardinia one of the best cycling destinations in Europe , and the quiet roads also mean your active holiday will be safer . During the guided cycling and walking tours, our guides will introduce you to the best that the area has to offer. Even if you prefer to explore the routes independently, it is very easy to find the authentic side of Sardinia . Sardinia is a land that is very rich in traditions which are still strongly felt by the local population. There is never any shortage of surprises during our cycling or hiking tours . You can often find yourself in the middle of a village festival or a religious procession where men, women and children dress in traditional Sardinian clothes. The Cabras San Salvatore is celebrated in the first week of September with a barefoot race, and guests have the pleasure becoming part of the crowd that flocks in from all over Sardinia to enjoy this moment. During the carnival period before Easter, horse rides like the Sartiglia in Oristano or Sa Carrela Annanti in Santulussurgiu involve tourists, who are dragged in from the audience to become one with the local population.
When taking breaks from the walking or cycling tours in small local bars, Sardinians never fail to ask cyclists if everything is ok or if they need a hand with their bikes. They rarely speak English, but always have a friendly smile. This is particularly common in places less affected by mass tourism: areas where Dolcevita also offers cycling and walking tours. One example among many is the tour of the abandoned mining areas . Sardinia is one of the most ancient lands in Europe, and is rich in minerals that were previously exported throughout Europe and the world. Whole towns and mining villages were founded during those years but are now abandoned, creating a picturesque backdrop to the dunes and beaches of the Costa Verde.
Choose your favorite active holiday , can be mountain biking , road cycling or if you like a easy cycling tour hire a ebike . We are sure the will be a great cycling .
Dolcevita Bike Tours manage cycling holidays in Sardinia everywhere. In from the noth west with the cycle tour MIne of Memories, from the noth east following the Costa Smeralda Classic. All cycling trips are guided or self guided. Usually the cycle route hotel to hotel often is ride in secondary roads, with few cars and local people working in the fields.
As in all of Italy, many different types of pasta are featured in the first courses. Carbohydrates are essential for cyclists and walkers, as they are slow to burn and provide the energy needed to spend the entire day on the road or hitting the pedals. If you want to try something unique, ask for "is culurgiones", a kind of ravioli with ricotta and wild chard or potatoes: when served with red sauce or butter, sage and pecorino, they won’t disappoint.
One of the most famous meat dishes in Sardinia is the famous "Procceddu arrostiu", roast suckling pig, which is strictly cooked on a spit over hot coals. This tasty protein is important for tackling the tough stretches during an active holiday.
The dishes are different on the island of Carloforte, which have different origins, as does the local language, and the local cuisine there is characterised by couscous dishes with pesto sauce. Don’t miss out on the dishes made with the tuna caught in Sardinia from late May to October.
If you like cheese, don't miss to try Fiore Sardo DOP. Is an excellent table cheese, when consumed young, as well as being a good grating cheese after maturation. Fiore Sardo was recognised as a Denominazione Tipica cheese in 1955, awarded the Denominazione d’Origine in 1974; in 1996 it obtained PDO rating. It is the Sardinian sheep’s milk cheese which is still made using the ancient techniques mentioned in the 4th century A.D., by that erudite Latin scholar, Palladio Rutilio Tauro Emiliano.
Sardinia enjoys a mild Mediterranean weather that allows comfortable cycling all year round . The most popular times of the year are spring and autumn. In spring you will find blooming flowers, sharp colours, and amazingly bright skies. Water at sea is fresh, days are long and and peaceful.
For plant lovers, spring is the perfect time to book a cycling or walking holiday in Sardinia. Over 60 wild orchids and about 350 endemic species comprise the more than 2400 entities that make the island a magnificent garden, and one of the most beautiful areas in Italy for outdoor activities.
In September and October you will find the pastures turned brown and yellow by the summer sun, and very warm water at sea, allowing for splendid swims during the cycling or at sunset, when it takes an endless, magic time to the sun to dip below the horizon.
Sardinia weather year round is Mediterranean, so is perfect for outdoor activitities. Walking tours or cycling holidays can be runned all year round. We suggest spring for colors and flower perfume and autumn for who prefer cooler weather.
A Blue Zone is a geographic area characterized by extreme longevity of the people. In the Science Direct Abstract is explained all details about this reality. The area in Sardinia where where longevity is concentrated in the central-eastern part of the island and covers all the hilly areas of inland Sardinia.

These lodgings, all thoughtfully designed to provide comfort and coziness, offer a mix of historical charm, modern elegance, traditional warmth, and serenity.
Two days will be spent in the spectacular luxury Villa Mosca . This upscale historical villa is nestled just next to the sea and features a pool and a terrace—perfect for those warm Mediterranean nights.
Then you’re off to Hotel Villa Asfodeli for one night. Located in a bucolic setting between ancient bell towers, Villa Asfodeli offers an unforgettable pastoral experience. Just picture yourself with a glass of wine in your hand, unwinding by the pool in a garden, with stunning views of the sea in the distance.
Next up is Hotel Regina d’Arborea in the charming Oristano, an ideal home for those who’d love to experience the heart of the city where music, entertainment, art, tradition, and culture find their roots. The guest house is located in a historic, 19th-century building, which was designed by the well-known Cagliari architect Gaetano Cima. You’ll feel like you’ve taken a step back into time by staying at this incredible place.
Last night will be spent at Is Perdas Farmhouse Resort , a wonderful agritourism resort and spa. Nestled in a unique spot in the unspoiled nature of the Sardinian backcountry, this is a place to get an authentic Sardinian experience, making it a perfect ending to your trip.
Mauro and his excellent crew provided us a most memorable bicycle tour from Alghero to Gergei. He is truly a veteran and arranged excellent hotels, restaurants, food and wine tastings, cooking classes and a week cycling through back roads of gorgeous land and seascapes through this charming island. Delectable antipasti, the most succulent roast pig you’ll ever eat, seafood, lamb and lots of Vermentino were a gourmand’s dream. The level of professionalism could not have been greater. Beyond this, all three of these men were just exceptional people, sensitive to our needs as a group of 15 and very caring when small problems would occur. I cannot recommend this company more highly. Furthermore, Mauro is more than willing to arrange varios trips including self-guided brief or longer tours through much of Italy and nearby islands. The prices are very fair and the experience unforgettable! E un viaggio favoloso!
These guys were fantastic. Great bikes, incredibly informative and so helpful. Hotels were amazing and restaurant recommendations superb.
We had a wonderful experience. Mauro and Nik were helpful and everything was organized beautifully. The hotels we were booked were unique and we enjoyed them. Thank you!
Thanks Mauro and team. We had an excellent trip. The organisation and attention to detail was beyond expectation. The selection of places we stayed in exceptional. I can highly reccommend Bike Tours Sardinia. Thanks again.

Italy’s Wild Island: from Costa Smeralda to the Interior
Our Levels range from 1-4. Learn more .
Fresh seafood, porceddu (whole-roasted pork), a comforting cheese-and-bread dish called Zuppa Gallurese, culurgiones (mint and potato ravioli), lamb with artichokes, and seada, a sheep’s cheese-pastry covered in honey
Intense, full-bodied Cannonau for red wine lovers and a variety of whites—from crisp Vermentinos produced in Gallura to the rich Malvasias of Bosa and lighter Vernaccias
Your guides will meet you at the Olbia airport for a short transfer to our first hotel. Check-in at this classically Mediterranean property, located right on the famed Costa Smeralda, where we’ll get fitted to our bikes before our first ride. Our warmup route follows the cerulean coast before heading inland to our friend Max’s hidden winery. Here, we’ll have our first taste of Sardinia’s flagship varietals, Vermentino and Cannonau, paired with local cheeses and a home-cooked lunch. After lunch, opt to visit some prehistoric stone edifices called nuraghe or bike directly back to the hotel to get settled. Tonight’s dinner sets the tone for the week: a fresh seafood feast enjoyed as the sun sets over the Mediterranean.
Meals: Lunch / Dinner Destinations: Cannigione, Arzachena Accomplished: 14 miles / 23 km, elevation gain: 1,440 feet / 439 meters Longer Option: 25 miles / 41 km, elevation gain: 1,768 feet / 539 meters Accommodations: Aethos Sardinia
Pedal up the coast today and catch a short ferry to La Maddalena, part of the archipelago just off the main island. We’ll bike in and out of hidden bays with views of the rugged coastline, then cross the causeway to Caprera, Maddalena’s sister island. Caprera was the historic home of Giuseppe Garibaldi—one of modern Italy’s most fascinating figures—so we’ll spend some time learning about his life and legacy. This afternoon, board a private yacht and experience Costa Smeralda’s glamour as we swim in secluded coves. After a simple and satisfying lunch on deck, we’ll sail right to our hotel. You’re free to choose your own restaurant for dinner, and our guides are happy to recommend their favorites in town.
Meals: Breakfast / Lunch Destinations: Palau, Maddalena, Caprera Accomplished: 22 miles / 36 km, elevation gain: 1,647 feet / 502 meters Longer Option: 29 miles / 46 km, elevation gain: 2,083 feet / 635 meters Accommodations: Aethos Sardinia
This morning we head inland to explore the island’s center—over the next few days, we’ll see how Sardinia’s interior is replete with natural beauty that’s been respected and preserved for centuries. Our ride begins in a small mountain village, following a scenic ribbon of pavement that hugs mountainous bluffs and peers all the way to the sea. After a quick coffee in the little town of Lula, we’ll keep cruising to lunch at a whitewashed restaurant that produces its own wine and truly sets the standard for celebrating regional cuisine. Afterward, it’s just a few more miles to our next hotel—an incredible property devoted to upholding Sardinia’s simple, old-world traditions.
Meals: Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner Destinations: Sant’Anna, Lula, Oliena Accomplished: 38 miles / 62 km, elevation gain: 3,283 feet / 1,001 meters Longer Option: 43 miles / 69 km, elevation gain: 3,355 feet / 1,023 meters Accommodations: Su Gologone
Today’s ride visits Sardinia’s up-and-coming wine region where local producers are crafting award-winning Cannonau. First, we’ll ride through Orgosolo, a village that stands apart thanks to its ubiquitous murals: the public paintings first emerged in the 1960s and today they number well over 150. A local guide will take us on a different kind of gallery tour, strolling through this open-air museum and explaining the significance of standout murals. Continue cycling through the vineyards to lunch at one of Sardinia’s emerging wineries, then choose to transfer or finish riding the loop back to Su Gologone. Tonight, we’ll taste Sardinia’s classic wood-fired fare as we prepare dinner alongside a lovely local.
Meals: Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner Destinations: Orgosolo, Mamoiada, Oliena Accomplished: 32 miles / 51 km, elevation gain: 4,061 feet / 1,238 meters Longer Option : 43 miles / 70 km, elevation gain: 4,402 feet / 1,342 meters Accommodations: Su Gologone
We’ll set off for the Supramonte mountain range and the most epic riding of our trip, full of staggering scenery on a 3% grade as the road climbs gently along the Goroppu Gorge. At the top of the Genna Silana pass (featured in the 2017 Giro d’Italia), we’ll celebrate our feat of the week before enjoying the sweet reward: a 36-kilometer downhill to the coastal village of Santa Maria Navarrese. Check in to our beachfront hotel, take a swim at the private beach, and toast to a wonderful week at our final dinner.
Meals: Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner Destinations: Dorgali, Baunei, Santa Maria Navarrese Accomplished: 46 miles / 74 km, elevation gain: 4,146 feet / 1,264 meters Shorter Option: 35 miles / 56 km, elevation gain: 2,811 feet / 857 meters Accommodations: Lanthia Resort
Wake up early to enjoy the peace and quiet in Santa Maria Navarrese. Your guides will transfer you back to the Olbia airport and see you off to your next destination.

I contacted Mauro to arrange a self guided bike trip. I had an excellent e-bike and my husband loved the road bike provided for us. The planning was made easy by BTS staff whom made excellent suggestions and answered all my questions by email efficiently and quickly. His hotel choice was good to exceptional – especially our first hotel – Villa Mosca – in Alghero! Each day our luggage was transferred and in our room at our next destination before we were there! I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Mauro and Bike Tour Sardinia to anyone. We’ve done several other tours with other companies and this was definitely the best one yet! We would like to return to Sardinia one day! Stunningly beautiful island, wonderful friendly people, and excellent food and wine!
Beautiful landscape, unique boutique hotels, great food and wonderful biking, basically describes our experience with Bike Tour Sardinia. We went from Alghero to Oristano, exploring the medieval towns and coast. Mauro arranged a relatively seamless and fabulous self-guided adventure, being consistently available, helpful and responsive. We had both e-bikes and standard, but for me, the e-bike added ease and the ability for further exploration and smiles. I highly recommend Bike Tour Sardinia as a way to explore this beautiful island.
