Tate McRae

“Think Later Tour” with special guest, Presley Regier

Multi-platinum singer/songwriter Tate McRae will embark on her first global outing with the “Think Later Tour” spanning 53-dates throughout Europe, UK, North America, Australia, and New Zealand. Produced by Live Nation, the tour will visit Michigan Lottery Amphitheatre on Sunday, July 28 at 8 p.m.

The tour kicks off on Wednesday, April 17 in Dublin, Ireland at 3Olympia Theatre, with shows in London, Amsterdam, Prague, Paris, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Nashville, New York, Sydney, Melbourne, and many more before wrapping up in Wellington, New Zealand at TSB Arena on Thursday, November 21. charlieonnafriday will be joining as support on all dates across Europe, UK, Australia, and New Zealand. Presley Regier will join Tate across all North America dates.

The “Think Later Tour” will see Tate playing the biggest and most iconic venues of her career thus far, including her first headline show at Madison Square Garden.

McRae announces her sophomore album Think Later to be released December 8 via RCA Records. Executive produced with hitmaker Ryan Tedder (Taylor Swift, Beyoncé), Think Later and its songs are steeped in pop appeal and infectious toplines. Showcasing Tate’s boundless vocal talent and evolution as a songwriter, this new body of work explores the all-too-relatable feelings of falling in love and embracing the raw emotions that you experience as a result of leading with your intuition and heart. Pre-save HERE .

Think Later features Tate’s latest single “greedy”  which earned the star her first #1 on the Spotify Global chart and top 10 on the Billboard Global 200 chart hitting #3. The self-assured hypnotic offering has garnered over 313 million streams to date and hit #14 on Hot 100 along with #1 most added at Top 40 and Hot AC radio upon release. Making it her biggest debut to date, “greedy” has been called “an artistic turning point… a propulsive self-empowerment anthem built around a firecracker of a pop hook that finds McRae dipping in and out of a falsetto while exuding unshakeable confidence” by Billboard.

Most recently, she performed the song on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and received a 2023 Billboard Music Award nomination in Top Dance/Electronic Song for her collaboration with Tiësto on “10:35.” Watch Tate make her musical guest debut on Saturday Night Live November 18 with host Jason Momoa.

Tate McRae Looks Toward a Giant Step Forward on Tour in 2024

The Think Later World Tour is poised to bring her from clubs to arenas and amphitheaters.

By Eric Frankenberg

Eric Frankenberg

Tate McRae

Tate McRae wrapped the sold-out Are We Flying Tour in October, but she’s busier than ever. After launching her next cycle with “Greedy,” she will be performing this weekend (Nov. 18) on NBC’s Saturday Night Live , en route to the release of the album Think Later in December. Next year, McRae takes the new album on tour on the biggest stages of her career.

How Tate McRae's 'Ballsy, Obnoxious' Alter Ego Is Fueling Her Breakout Year

The Are We Flying Tour grossed $2.2 million and sold 60,000 tickets between Sept. 5 and Oct. 15, according to figures reported to Billboard Boxscore. Expect those numbers to triple (and then some) next year, as McRae levels up from clubs and small theaters to boutique amphitheaters, and in one major case, an arena.

At its most extreme, McRae’s level-up expands her audience almost five times over. After selling out Dallas’ House of Blues at 1,674 tickets on Oct. 15, she’s scheduled to play the 8,000-capacity Toyota Music Factory in July. After playing House of Blues in Boston to a crowd of 2,705 fans on Sept. 16, she’ll play two nights at the MGM Music Hall at Fenway, to a potential combined crowd of more than 10,000. Similar jumps follow in Minneapolis, Nashville and San Francisco.

Of the 16 North American markets that line up with shows from her recent tour, McRae is playing a venue at least twice the size in 12. The only market with a dip in capacity is Los Angeles: She sold out two nights at the Hollywood Palladium (7,671 tickets on Oct. 4-5) and is scheduled to play the Greek Theatre (6,162 capacity) on July 11.

While McRae could move 10,000 tickets in Boston and at the Walmart Arkansas Music Pavilion in Rogers, Ark., two markets could break 15,000. In Toronto, she’ll play the Budweiser Stage, a 16,000-capacity amphitheater that has recently hosted sold-out concerts by Morgan Wallen , Post Malone , Janet Jackson and more. Hailing from Calgary, Alberta, it’s the only home-country show on the tour.

And after clearing two nights at The Rooftop at Pier 17 (7,494 tickets on Sept. 19-20), McRae is scheduled to close out the North American leg at New York’s Madison Square Garden, which has hosted A-list pop stars from Harry Styles to Madonna . Assuming she doesn’t play in-the-round, she could sell as many as 15,000 tickets.

With every show on McRae’s 2023 tour sold out, the upgrade in 2024 is warranted. There’s also her forthcoming album, already sporting the biggest single of her career. “Greedy” is No. 11 on the Nov. 18-dated Billboard Hot 100 , bringing her closer to a top 10 hit than ever before. Previously, “You Broke Me First” slow-burned its way to No. 17. She has five other Hot 100 entries to her name, including collaborations with Khalid , Troye Sivan and Tiesto .

And while McRae can anticipate tripling her North American audience, and potentially expand her grosses further with accelerated demand, The Think Later World Tour will be her first major trip outside North America. The trek begins with 25 shows in Europe and ends with nine in Australia and New Zealand.

Tate McRae to Perform on the 2023 Billboard Music Awards

Without any Boxscore history on either continent, projections are tricky. But McRae’s international chart history bodes well for her live prospects. While “You Broke Me First” clawed its way to the top 20 of the Hot 100 in March of 2021, it got there five months sooner on the global stage, reaching No. 17 on the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. list in October 2020, and then peaking at No. 15 in November. Further, “Greedy” has spent its first eight weeks on the Global Excl. U.S. chart in the top 10, returning to its so-far high of No. 3 this week. On Billboard ’s Hits of the World chart, “Greedy” already hit No. 1 in Australia, Austria, Denmark, Luxembourg, Norway, and the Netherlands. It’s a top 10 hit in 16 more territories.

Live Nation will promote the Think Later World Tour, with Presley Regier as support in North America, and charlieonafriday in Europe and Australia.

McRae, who is the latest Billboard cover star, is set to perform for the 2023 Billboard Music Awards, which streams Sunday (Nov. 19) at 8 p.m. ET via BBMAs.watch and the Billboard and the BBMAs’ social channels.

The Kid LAROI, Olivia Rodrigo & Tate McRae Enjoy a Night on the Town: See the Pic

We love when three of pop music's hottest young stars link up. On Monday, The Kid LAROI took to his Instagram Story to share a sweet snap of himself, Olivia Rodrigo and Tate McRae .

The adorable picture finds the trio of pop stars posing on a Los Angeles street with a RuPaul's Drag Race billboard towering in the background. The Kid LAROI throws up a pair of peace signs as he dons a black beanie, long-sleeve white tee and a statement red scarf. Rodrigo - dressed in a black biker jacket and heather-gray turtleneck - similarly throws her arms up and sports a huge smile, while McRae cradles her smiling face and dons a large black coat.

Some dating rumors have swirled around LAROI and McRae, though neither has confirmed their relationship status, while McRae and Rodrigo have been longtime friends, with Tate co-starring in Olivia's "bad idea, right?" music video .

The nighttime pic commemorates a massive six months for the trio - each of whom unleashed a new studio album in that time period. On Sept. 8, Rodrigo unearthed her sophomore studio album, Guts , which became her second consecutive Billboard 200 chart-topper, spawned the Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 single "Vampire," and earned six Grammy nominations , including album of the year. In exactly one month, starting Feb. 23, the "Drivers License" singer will embark on the Guts World Tour in support of the record, taking The Breeders, Chappell Roan, PinkPantheress and Remi Wolf on the road with her.

Just two months after Guts on Nov. 10, The Kid LAROI released his long-awaited debut studio album, The First Time . Reaching No. 26 on the Billboard 200, the album featured star-studded collaborations with the likes of Future, Robert Glasper and YoungBoy Never Broke Again and housed the Hot 100 hit "Too Much" (with Jung Kook and Central Cee, No. 44).

Of course, Tate McRae kicked off 2024 as one of the buzziest names in pop music thanks to the continued success of her smash hit "Greedy." The song has since climbed to No. 3 on the Hot 100, helping her latest album, Think Later (released Dec. 8), reach No. 4 on the Billboard 200, her very first top 10 placement on the ranking. Like Rodrigo, McRae will embark on a world tour in support of her new record. The 53-date Think Later World Tour is set to kick off on Apr. 17 in Dublin and conclude on Nov. 21 in Wellington, New Zealand.

In an open letter, the music giant has accused the wildly popular platform of "trying to build a music-based business, without paying fair value for the music."

Universal Music Group (UMG) says it will pull its entire music catalog from TikTok when its contract with the service expires on Wednesday (Jan. 31), accusing the platform of “trying to build a music-based business, without paying fair value for the music,” according to a new open letter .

In the letter, released Tuesday (Jan. 30) and addressed to UMG artists and songwriters, the company states that it’s particularly concerned about the rates that TikTok is offering to pay for its catalog. Other points of contention include the amount of content on TikTok that infringes its artists’ and songwriters’ works without providing “meaningful solutions” to help them combat it, the level of hate and harassment on the platform and TikTok’s stances on artificial intelligence (AI).

"With respect to the issue of artist and songwriter compensation, TikTok proposed paying our artists and songwriters at a rate that is a fraction of the rate that similarly situated major social platforms pay,” the letter reads.

Also according to UMG, during the negotiations, the ByteDance-owned social giant “demanded a contractual right which would allow [AI] content to massively dilute the royalty pool for human artists” while “developing tools to enable, promote and encourage AI music creation on the platform itself,” which UMG states is “nothing short of sponsoring artist replacement by AI.”

In the letter, UMG continued by claiming that when it proposed that TikTok take “similar steps as our other platform partners to try to address these issues, it responded first with indifference, and then with intimidation.”

“As our negotiations continued, TikTok attempted to bully us into accepting a deal worth less than the previous deal, far less than fair market value and not reflective of their exponential growth,” the letter added. “How did it try to intimidate us? By selectively removing the music of certain of our developing artists, while keeping on the platform our audience-driving global stars.”

If UMG pulls its catalog, it would affect all music distributed and administered by its recorded-music division as well as Universal Music Publishing Group. The company’s roster includes such megastars as Taylor Swift, BTS, Drake, Ariana Grande, The Weeknd, Lady Gaga, Lana Del Rey, Billie Eilish, Eminem, Nicki Minaj, Justin Bieber, Karol G and Post Malone.

“It is sad and disappointing that Universal Music Group has put their own greed above the interests of their artists and songwriters,” said TikTok in a statement sent to Billboard . “Despite Universal’s false narrative and rhetoric, the fact is they have chosen to walk away from the powerful support of a platform with well over a billion users that serves as a free promotional and discovery vehicle for their talent. TikTok has been able to reach ‘artist-first’ agreements with every other label and publisher. Clearly, Universal’s self-serving actions are not in the best interests of artists, songwriters and fans.”

The last deal UMG struck with TikTok to license both its recorded music and publishing was announced on Feb. 8, 2021. In July, WMG inked a multi-year licensing deal with TikTok that allows the company to use WMG’s music on its app as well as CapCut and its new “social streaming platform” TikTok Music , which is currently available in Brazil, Indonesia, Australia, Singapore, and Mexico . At the time the deal was announced, WMG CEO/chairman Robert Kyncl and TikTok’s chief executive Shou Chew said the agreement would benefit artists.

This is not the first time the music business has had issues with TikTok. In 2019, when the platform was just getting started, the National Music Publishers’ Association (NMPA) called on Congress to investigate TikTok for potential copyright theft. It was also reported around that time that TikTok was operating on expired deal extensions that were grandfathered in from when it acquired Musical.ly in late 2017. In March 2020, Billboard reported that all three majors had struck short-term licensing deals with TikTok.

Read the full open letter below.

Our core mission is simple: to help our artists and songwriters attain their greatest creative and commercial potential. To achieve these goals, our teams employ their expertise and passion to strike deals with partners all around the world, partners who take seriously their responsibilities to fairly compensate our artists and songwriters and treat the user experience with respect.

One of those partners is TikTok, an increasingly influential platform with powerful technology and a massive worldwide user base. As with many other platforms with whom we partner, TikTok’s success as one of the world’s largest social platforms has been built in large part on the music created by our artists and songwriters. Its senior executives proudly state publicly that “music is at the heart of the TikTok experience” and our analysis confirms that the majority of content on TikTok contains music, more than any other major social platform.

The terms of our relationship with TikTok are set by contract, which expires January 31, 2024. In our contract renewal discussions, we have been pressing them on three critical issues—appropriate compensation for our artists and songwriters, protecting human artists from the harmful effects of AI, and online safety for TikTok’s users.

We have been working to address these and related issues with our other platform partners. For example, our Artist-Centric initiative is designed to update streaming’s remuneration model and better reward artists for the value they deliver to platforms. In the months since its inception, we’re proud that this initiative has been received so positively and taken up by a range of partners, including the largest music platform in the world. We’ve also moved aggressively to embrace the promise of AI while fighting to ensure artists’ rights and interests are protected now and far into the future. In addition, we’ve engaged a number of our platform partners to try to drive positive change for their users and by extension, our artists, by addressing online safety issues, and we are recognized as the industry leader in focusing on music’s broader impact on health and wellness.

With respect to the issue of artist and songwriter compensation, TikTok proposed paying our artists and songwriters at a rate that is a fraction of the rate that similarly situated major social platforms pay. Today, as an indication of how little TikTok compensates artists and songwriters, despite its massive and growing user base, rapidly rising advertising revenue and increasing reliance on music-based content, TikTok accounts for only about 1% of our total revenue.

Ultimately TikTok is trying to build a music-based business, without paying fair value for the music.

On AI, TikTok is allowing the platform to be flooded with AI-generated recordings—as well as developing tools to enable, promote and encourage AI music creation on the platform itself – and then demanding a contractual right which would allow this content to massively dilute the royalty pool for human artists, in a move that is nothing short of sponsoring artist replacement by AI.

Further, TikTok makes little effort to deal with the vast amounts of content on its platform that infringe our artists’ music and it has offered no meaningful solutions to the rising tide of content adjacency issues, let alone the tidal wave of hate speech, bigotry, bullying and harassment on the platform. The only means available to seek the removal of infringing or problematic content (such as pornographic deepfakes of artists) is through the monumentally cumbersome and inefficient process which equates to the digital equivalent of “Whack-a-Mole.”

But when we proposed that TikTok takes similar steps as our other platform partners to try to address these issues, it responded first with indifference, and then with intimidation.

As our negotiations continued, TikTok attempted to bully us into accepting a deal worth less than the previous deal, far less than fair market value and not reflective of their exponential growth. How did it try to intimidate us? By selectively removing the music of certain of our developing artists, while keeping on the platform our audience-driving global stars.

TikTok’s tactics are obvious: use its platform power to hurt vulnerable artists and try to intimidate us into conceding to a bad deal that undervalues music and shortchanges artists and songwriters as well as their fans.

We will never do that.

We will always fight for our artists and songwriters and stand up for the creative and commercial value of music.

We recognize the challenges that TikTok’s actions will cause, and do not underestimate what this will mean to our artists and their fans who, unfortunately, will be among those subjected to the near-term consequences of TikTok’s unwillingness to strike anything close to a market-rate deal and meaningfully address its obligations as a social platform. But we have an overriding responsibility to our artists to fight for a new agreement under which they are appropriately compensated for their work, on a platform that respects human creativity, in an environment that is safe for all, and effectively moderated.

We honor our responsibilities with the utmost seriousness. Intimidation and threats will never cause us to shirk those responsibilities.

NHL Power Rankings: Identifying the perfect celebrity captain for each team ahead of All-Star Weekend

The nhl could use a little more star power behind the bench.

gettyimages-1153110502-2.jpg

The NHL All-Star Weekend is almost here, and each of the four teams has been assigned a celebrity co-captain to help them navigate the festivities. That sounded like a good idea to me, so I decided to pick a celebrity captain for every NHL team in this week's NHL Power Rankings.

When trying to find a celebrity captain for each team, I tried to find someone who has a strong tie to the area. Maybe they grew up in the city, or maybe they achieved fame in the area. It was also important to take the current state of the team into account as well.

For instance, teams like the Oilers , Bruins  and Jets needed legends to help them navigate what might be deep playoff runs in the 2024 NHL Playoffs. Other teams, like the Maple Leafs , Kings  and Senators needed celebrities who could come in and improve morale almost immediately after taking some heat this season. Finding the perfect fit for each squad was an important duty, and I can assure you I took it very seriously.

Let's identify the best actor, musician, or celebrity athlete to lead each team in the latest NHL Power Rankings.
