Reconstruction projects must rely on local resources and capacities to effectively reduce inhabitants’ vulnerability on the long run. Vernacular architecture often reveals disaster-resilient strategies that are affordable and accessible to most people. Documenting and validating these practices through scientific research help in promoting them at different institutional and political levels. The work presented in this paper is a first step on the identification of the main factors affecting the incorporation of new practices in local building cultures and on the understanding of the extent to which these practices actually improve inhabitants’ resilience. It results from a comparative study of two reconstruction projects in Nepal on the one hand and on the other hand from the research conducted by 3SR on a technique that is being reincorporated into inhabitants’ building cultures: the regular insertion of seismic bands. The experimental campaign included tests on seismic bands built with different materials and cyclically loaded to assess the energy dissipated by the different configurations. The strong connection between academic and operational settings allowed for a direct contribution to the activities carried out by local stakeholders. Yet, the main factor affecting the people’s acceptance of Building Back Safer (BBS) messages was the official guidelines they had to comply with to get subsidies; but it often resulted in important safety issues as their unaffordability induced improper implementations. Working on social aspects and side by side with local authorities is thus essential to widely implement proper BBS messages.

Research Trends in Vernacular Architecture: A bibliometric study

Profile image of Naima Benkari

2021, Research Trends in Vernacular Architecture: A bibliometric study

Research about vernacular architecture is constantly evolving to include new building typologies, geographic regions, and new research methodologies. The purpose of this article is to examine the scientific literature in this field and identify the aspects and regions that might need investigation and the disciplines that can be involved in further research. A systematic analysis of published research about the topic was performed through a bibliometric methodology. Data related to more than 700 published articles was collected from the Web of Science and SCOPUS. Further computerized analysis was made to investigate the different characters of the collected data, such as countries of the most published papers, themes investigated and the scientific fields involved in this research during the past 70 years. The results show that the published scientific literature about vernacular architecture is progressively expanding, specifically after the turn of the third millennium. This topic is being increasingly addressed through "hard" sciences after having been examined by Humanities. It is invested by multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary approaches. The present research has also revealed a shift in the center of production of scientific literature about the subject, from North America to Asia.

The goal of this study is to create a new formula for analyzing individual samples of vernacular architecture in details and to test the formula by processing the distinctive architectural samples. Therefore, the boundaries of the study include any structure within the definition of vernacular architecture; "any process of space defining without employment of a professional designer", "indigenous or so called ethnic architecture", and "architecture without architect". The formula anticipates determining both the inputs and the outputs of vernacular architectural design. Predictive inputs shaping the vernacular structure are climate, economy, and culture respectively. These are all external, intangible and somehow abstract factors for understanding the reasons behind the vernacular design. Climate is the main challenge of the architecture. However, when a vernacular structure errs the owner faces the harsh nature. Therefore, vernacular architecture reveals a very high level of performance in dealing with the climate. For example, the "igloo" on the circumpolar region is a one-of-a-kind thermal device for this unique region. Certain climates allow certain 'endemic' lifeforms and each climatic zone has a unique ecosystem or biome. And the mankind is the only one organism that spread all climatic zones. They introduced several economies according to local species, as hunting (fishing included), gathering, horticulture, husbandry, and some mixed types. For example, when hunting is the main economy in Great Plains or herding as in Siberian steppes, the architecture should be detachable and mobile-the "tent". Culture is the outcome of these local lifestyles and directly affects vernacular architecture. For example, some African tribes place the door of the "hut" towards east to welcome sun, Chinese people make placement decision according to Feng Shui, and some polygamic cultures place additional "harem" units into their residences. Predictive outputs, on the other hand, of the formula are (building) material, (building) technique, and form respectively. These, on the other hand, are the internal, tangible and concrete evidences of the structure and all obviously observable. The environment is scarcely ever genial, and the building materials are often appallingly meager in quantity or restricted in kind, in terms of vernacular architecture. These materials are mainly gained from the local economy. For example, yak fur is used for the coating of the Tibetan "black tent" where buffalo leather if for Native American "teepee". Certain materials allow certain building techniques. Even though the scarce in resources, vernacular structures still display an inspiring way of interpretation of materials. The form and the reasons behind give valuable hints for a structure. For example, the "stilt house" of Malaysia with hollow façades are obviously designed to prevent heat gain and the hemispheric shape of an igloo means that they have searched for the geometry with minimum surface/volume ratio in order not to lose heat. All six components from both input and output groups are going to be defined in detail and use of them in vernacular design, likewise in the formula concept are going to be depicted over the analyses of distinctive vernacular architecture samples as some examples mentioned above.

José Martín Fuentes

DANIEL MAUDLIN

For most people the term ‘vernacular architecture’ means buildings such as English thatched cottages and clapboarded New England salt-boxes, mud huts in Africa, or the tin and concrete-block ziggurats of the Brazilian favela: things from the rural past and things from foreign places that are associated with the identity of the people who built and live, or lived, in them. In addition, for some, the vernacular may also call to mind the work of contemporary architects whose buildings are in the style of a certain region. These popular perceptions broadly mirror those distinctions between architecture and buildings held by architects and architectural historians for whom, typically, vernacular architecture has been categorized as the study of ‘traditional buildings’: buildings that are, or were, the authentic product of a specific place and people, have evolved in form over time, and are produced by non-expert ‘"ordinary people"’ through shared knowledge passed down over time. The vernacular has, therefore, been widely understood as ‘“the architectural language of the people’” with its ethnic, regional and local dialects: the product of "non-experts"’ (Oliver, 2006). Since the rise of Modernism in the twentieth century, architectural writers have tended to admire what they regarded as traditional buildings for the immediate relationship between form and function that they believed controlled their ‘design’: practical responses to practical considerations.

A selective review of the literature demonstrates the difficulty in defining ‘vernacular architecture’. Recent studies have presented an overly narrow, single-sided, or even unacceptable image of the topic in comparison with many earlier definitions and discussions. However, those earlier analyses also had various shortfalls. The interdependence of vernacular architecture, economic interests, and emerging awareness of buildings’ interaction with the environment demand a rethinking of vernacular architecture, which the present study understands as signifying housing offered for most of the world’s population.

—The Traditional Architecture of Himachal Pradesh is the outcome of the prevailing topography, extremes of the climate and other natural forces. Indigenous architectural solutions have responded well to these natural forces. Moreover the vernacular architecture merges well with the hills at the backdrop. The Traditional Architecture forms the back bone of social and cultural set up of the place. It is essential for this architecture to retain its integrity. So the Traditional Architecture should not be disturbed, rather the contemporary architecture should be integrated well with the traditional architecture. This Traditional Architecture has stood till today. It commands deep interest and respect as it represents and reveals the many faceted realities of the people living there. In the traditional architecture, buildings were designed to achieve human comfort by using locally available building materials and construction technology which were more responsive to their climatic and geographic conditions. Learning from traditional wisdom of previous generations through the lessons of traditional buildings can be a very powerful tool for improving the buildings of the future.

Synthetic Vernacular: The Coproduction of Architecture

The Gujarat earthquake of 2001 caused widespread devastation to livelihoods and the built environment, demolishing or badly damaging in excess of 400,000 buildings in the Kutch region as well as killing upwards of 15,000 people. This research examines the work of Hunnarsh?l?, an urban development and architecture firm based in Bhuj, Gujarat, India who, in response to the immediate and long-term needs apparent in the aftermath of the earthquake, proposed an owner-driven redevelopment strategy which sought to promote the socio-cultural needs of the ?users? as embodied in the artefacts and processes of the vernacular traditions common to the communities, as essentially empowering and therefore critical to the long-term sustainability of any reconstruction work. Hunnarsh?l??s approach is an illustration of the coproduction of housing, leading to what is termed here as ?synthetic vernacular architecture?. The thesis explores the potential of the coproduction of housing as an alternative model for architectural development for disadvantaged individuals and groups, with the potential for broader application in other contexts. Using three settlements on which Hunnarsh?l? worked as case studies, this research examines the efficacy of such an approach through both artefacts and processes of production as found in the field through a qualitative methodological approach based on ethnographic and design analysis methods. The research indicates that whilst there are distinct and problematic issues raised by an approach such as that used by Hunnarsh?l? in the context of Kutch, their approach is an illustration of the coproduction of housing, Such an approach has not been investigated to any significant degree in terms of its potential as a means of making culturally resonant architecture and therefore as a strategy of empowerment. This it is felt is an oversight which this research seeks to remedy.

Pair of Dice, Para-Dice, Paradise: A Counter-Memorial to Victims of Police Brutality

This thesis is a proposal for a counter-memorial to victims of police brutality. The counter-memorial addresses scale by being both local and national, addresses materiality by privileging black aesthetics over politeness, addresses presence/absence by being more transient than permanent, and lastly, addresses site by being collective rather than singular. The result is an architecture that plays itself out over 18,000 police stations across America and the Washington Monument at the National Mall, two sites that are intrinsically linked through the architecture itself: negative “voids” at police stations whose positive counterparts aggregate at the Mall.

The critical question here is whether or not the system in which police brutality takes place can be reformed from within, or if people of color need to seek their utopia outside of these too-ironclad structures. This counter-memorial, when understood as an instrument of accountability (and therefore a real-time beacon that measures America’s capacity to either change or otherwise repeat the same violent patterns), ultimately provides us with an eventual answer.

The Magic Carpet

The Persian Carpet and the Persian Miniature painting have served as representation tools for the Persian Garden and the idea of paradise in Persian culture since antiquity. The word paradise derives from the Persian word pari-daeza meaning “walled enclosure.” The garden is always walled and stands in opposition to its landscape. This thesis investigates the idea of a contemporary image of paradise in the Iranian imagination by using carpets and miniature paintings as a tool for designing architecture. The garden, with its profound associations, provided a world of metaphor for the classical mystic poets. One of the manuscripts describing the Persian garden is called Haft Paykar – known as the Seven Domes – written by the 12th century Persian poet called Nizami. These types of manuscripts were made for Persian kings and contain within them miniature paintings and poetry describing battles, romances, tragedies, and triumphs that compromise Iran’s mythical and pre-Islamic history. The carpet is the repeating object in the miniature paintings of the manuscript. This thesis deconstructs the carpet in seven ways in order to digitally reconstruct the miniature paintings of the Seven Domes and the image of paradise with new techniques.

Up from the Past: Housing as Reparations on Chicago’s South Side

Do people know what the Illinois Institute of Technology and the South Side Planning Board and the city of Chicago and the state of Illinois and the United States government did to the Black Metropolis? If they know, do they care? Is it too hard to hold these entities accountable? If we held them accountable, could we find justice for those that were displaced? What would justice look like? What comes after Mecca? What types of spaces come after Mecca? Are they different than what was there before? Are they already there? What defines them? Can Reparations be housing? How many people are already doing this work? How many people are doing this work in academia? On the ground? Is the word “Reparations” dead? What do we draw from? Who is this for? Do white men own the legacy of the architecture that defined the Black Metropolis? How personal should this work be? How anecdotal? How quantitative? Does the design need to be inherently spatial? Or atmospheric? What should it feel like? How do I draw a feeling in Rhino? What are radical ways of looking? How do we reclaim racialized architecture? Do we? Should we even talk about these things?

Stacked Daydreams: Ceiling‐Scape for the Neglected

Elderly Care Adaptive Reuse of Hong Kong’s Vertical Factory

This thesis operates at the intersection of three domains of neglect:

  • In the realm of building elements, the ceiling is often considered as an afterthought in the design process.
  • Across building types, the vertical factory sits abandoned and anachronistic to its surroundings. It spiraled into disuse due to Hong Kong’s shifting economic focus.
  • In society, the elderly are often subjected to social neglect, seen as a financial burden, and forced toward the fringes of society.

These parts experience obsolescence that led to indifference, and subsequently to boredom. I intend to draw the parallel of deterioration between the body of the elderly and the body of the vertical factory. Using a set of ceiling parts in the manner of prosthetics to reactivate the spaces into elderly care facilities, revert boredom to daydreams, and reimagine the concept of elderhood as an experimental second stage of life.

Citing the Native Genius

Reconstructing vernacular architecture in Hawai’i

For over 120 years, Americanization has tried to demean and erase Hawaiian language, culture, and architecture. In contemporary discourse, the vernacular architecture of Hawai’i is mostly referred to as ancient and vague. As with many Indigenous cultures, Western perspectives tend to fetishize or patronize the Hawaiian design aesthetic. Within this hierarchy of knowledge is a systemic assumption that Hawaiian vernacular architecture cannot effectively serve as a precedent resource for contemporary architects. Those who do reference the original vernacular will often classify it as utilitarian or resourceful. Regardless of intent, this narrative takes design agency away from the people involved. As a corrective, a respectful use of vernacular domestic form would benefit designers that are struggling to connect with Hawai’i’s cultural and architectural traditions.

Mining the European gaze and influence out of revivalist publications, archeological surveys and historic images reveal unique characteristics of Hawaiian domestic space. Geometric quotation and symbolic referencing are the foundational instruments in applying the discrete components, form, and organizational logic of the vernacular. The result is a design process that creates an amalgamation of decolonized form and contemporary technique. This residential project intends to revive Hawai’i’s erased domestic experience by revisiting the precolonial vernacular form and plan.

For most people the term 'vernacular architecture' means buildings such as English thatched cottages and clapboarded New England salt-boxes, mud huts in Africa, or the tin and concrete-block ziggurats of the Brazilian favela: things from the rural past and things from foreign places that are associated with the identity of the people who built and live, or lived, in them.
