The church in Akureyri, North Iceland

Akureyri is the second-largest settlement in the country outside of the Capital Region . Calling it a 'city' may be too generous a term as only 20,000 people live there, which makes it closer to the size of what is considered a town. However, Akureyri is often referred to as Iceland's "Capital of the North."

To get to Akureyri from Reykjavik, you can easily rent a car in Iceland and drive there yourself. Make sure to book your accommodation in Akureyri in case you're hoping to stay there. Explore the wide variety of Akureyri tours that are available and find out what the north has to offer.

Top Akureyri Tours

Whale watching tour with transfer from akureyri, lake myvatn sightseeing & hot springs tour from akureyri, northern lights hunt from akureyri.

A charming town in itself, there are plenty of things to do in Akureyri. After spending a day or so in the town itself, you could go on day trips to some beautiful places nearby and use the city as your base.

If you're wondering what to see in Akureyri, the first thing you should consider is visiting some of the area's natural attractions. Akureyri is the gateway to the north's spectacular beauty, most notably the Myvatn region , Dettifoss waterfall , Godafoss waterfall , and Asbyrgi canyon , which can all be visited on day trips from Akureyri.

You could, for example, go on and see Myvatn and Grjotagja hot spring , where you get the chance to bathe at Myvatn Nature Baths at the end of an eventful day.

If you'd like to explore the area on your own, you can rent a car in Akureyri or even take a 7-day self-drive tour of the north to take in all the sites.

Myvatn Lake is well-known for the blue and green colors in the lake

You might also want to hop on a boat and explore the nearby islands,  Hrisey or Grimsey .

Hrisey lies in Eyjafjordur , the same fjord in which Akureyri is nestled. It is Iceland's second-largest island after Heimaey in the Westman Islands on the South Coast . Hrisey has a population of about 180 people, and the town has distinctive colorful houses with beautiful views in every direction.

The island is a birdwatching paradise. When you're there, you can go on a tractor sightseeing tour in summer or go for a hike around the island and taste the local delicacy, the blue mussel.

Puffins are common in Iceland's summer

You can even take a three-day tour to Hrisey from Reykjavik . Or you can take the 15-minute ferry from Arskogssandur , just outside Akureyri. If you have interesting in taking the ferry to Hrisey, you can find Hrisey's ferry schedule here .

Grimsey marks the northernmost part of Iceland, and it's the only land area that's inside the Arctic Circle.

It's around 25 miles (40 kilometers) north of Iceland's mainland, and fewer than 100 people live there.

To reach it, you can take a 30-minute flight from Akureyri or go on a 3-hour boat journey from Dalvik , which only runs on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

Top Myvatn Tours

The Eyjafjordur  area is beautiful in the summertime.

The town comes to life with outdoor cafés, and people lounge at the poolside, totally ignoring the fact that they live just below the Arctic Circle.

There are various outdoor activities to engage in, such as going on hiking trails, attending concerts and festivals, and of course, ice cream to eat.

Here are some suggestions for a great day out in Akureyri in the summer.

Laufas turf house in Akureyri, Iceland

These turf homes in Akureyri, built in 1865, are some of the best-preserved examples of how Icelanders used to live before the 20th century. The houses are in pristine condition and serve as a time capsule of a bygone era.

Laufas  belongs to the National Museum of Iceland , which has provided the houses with early 20th-century farming tools, making the experience of visiting there highly immersive.

The turf homes used to house more than 20 residents and are located only a few miles out of town. It's definitely worth visiting if you are interested in taking a step back into the past and learning about the history of Iceland.

When visiting Kjarnaskogur forest , you'll be amazed to know that back in the early 1950s, this area south of Akureyri had no trees whatsoever. That's when the first trees were planted in this 800-hectare area, aiming to create a green area near Akureyri.

Today, Kjarnaskogur forest is a popular leisure area among locals. There you can find several hiking trails, family playgrounds, grilling facilities, and even a 6-mile (10-kilometer) mountain biking trail.

Horseback riding is a popular activity in Akureyri, Iceland

Beautiful untouched nature surrounds Akureyri. After just a short drive out of town, you can visit a stable and be surrounded by horses in the relaxing Icelandic countryside.

This horse riding tour from Akureyri even includes a home-cooked two-course dinner made entirely from local organic ingredients. After dinner, you can have a soak in a hot tub or enjoy a stroll on a nearby beach.

These botanical gardens are the northernmost of the world and one of the best things to do in Akureyri, Iceland

On a warm and sunny day in Akureyri, it's the perfect time to admire the colorful flowers in Lystigardurinn , Akureyri's botanical garden.

This public park was opened in 1912 and has over 7,000 species of plants. Entry is free and is open between 9 AM and 10 PM in the summer. It's a perfect place for a leisurely walk, learning about Arctic plant life, and listening to the birds sing as they fly from tree to tree.

While at the park, you can grab a snack or treat yourself to dinner at Cafe Bjork, a reasonably priced and friendly restaurant located in the garden.

The church in Akureyri is a spectacular feat of architecture and one of the best things to do in Akureyri

The iconic Akureyri Church is considered one of the must-see Akureyri attractions. It's conveniently easy to spot as it towers over the center of the city and dominates the town's skyline.

It was consecrated in 1940 and, since then, has always been the most significant trademark symbol of the 'Capital in the North.'

The stairs leading up to the church are no less iconic than the church itself, and Icelanders commonly challenge each other to race up the stairs. There is even an annual 'church stair race' event in July, where locals compete in multiple categories of who is fastest racing up the stairs.

Súlur is a rhyolite mountain found southwest of Akureyri in Iceland.

Just outside of town sits  Mount Sulur , affectionately known as the 'town mountain', which is a great place to go hiking. It's located just 6 miles (9 kilometers) from the Akureyri and is a popular destination for locals looking to experience natural beauty without having to go too far.

Mount Sulur rises at 3,980 feet (1,213 meters). The hike is considered moderate to difficult and is best done with a guide and in good weather.

It can be extra challenging in wet weather because of nearby marshlands that can slow you down. It also gets quite steep in some parts. But once you get to the summit, you'll be rewarded with spectacular views of Akureyri, the surrounding mountains, and the majestic fjord of  Eyjafjordur .

Top Hiking & Trekking Tours

One of the best things to do in Akureyri during summer is whale watching

The fjord of Eyjafjordur is well known for its rich marine life, making Akureyri a great place to go  whale watching . Whales are not the only aquatic mammals you might encounter, as the fjord is also a haven for dolphins and porpoises.

The most common animals to see during a whale watching tour in Akureyri include humpback whales, harbor porpoises, minke whales, and dolphins.

Encounters with rare species such as blue whales and orcas are not unheard of in  North Iceland , making it the perfect destination for taking to the sea in search of these gentle giants.

You can choose between several Akureyri whale watching tours, such as our most popular Akureyri whale watching tour or an Akureyri whale watching and birdwatching tour .

Despite the natural beauty that surrounds Akureyri, whales usually top the list of things to see in Akureyri for visitors.

If you're wondering what to do in Akureyri during winter, you have plenty of options. Akureyri is a winter wonderland with easy access to great ski slopes and skating rinks , open skies for northern lights spotting , and geothermal pools to sink into and hide from the cold.

The nearby settlements, such as Hrafnagil, also offer fun winter experiences for both kids and adults.

If you're looking for the best things to do in Akureyri in winter, here's a handy list for you.

The Christmas House in Akureyri in summer.

This Christmas House (Jolahusid) is a quaint little gift shop that will get you into the Christmas spirit any time of the year.

It looks a bit like a cross between a traditional Nordic house and a gingerbread house, with candy adorning the roof. It's painted red and features various Christmas ornaments hanging all over the place.

Regardless of the time of year you visit, you can always buy Christmas gifts, decorations, and even traditional Icelandic Christmas food.

If you want to immerse yourself in the local culture, Akureyri has many galleries and museums that are worth a visit. Despite being significantly smaller than Reykjavik, Akureyri prides itself of its rich cultural life as the 'Capital of the North'.

Hof Cultural and Conference Center  was opened in 2010 and hosts multiple musical and theatrical events and exhibitions.   At Hof, you can also get information about the cultural events taking place in Akureyri while you're there.

Find out who's playing in the town's bars and cafés and which exhibitions are taking place in Akureyri Art Museum or the Art's Alley. The Akureyri Theater Company regularly has staged plays in English that are worth seeing.

This outdoor geothermal swimming pool is right behind Akureyrarkirkja church. It's a great place to treat yourself to a relaxing hot tub soak or steam room cleanse.

It's one of Iceland's most popular pools. It has two 75-feet (25-meter) outdoor pools, water jets, water slides, a splash pool, an indoor pool, four hot tubs, a steam bath, a sauna, and an extensive outdoor area.

Locals use the outdoor area for sunbathing in the summertime and for rolling around in the snow in the wintertime. A visit to this swimming pool is both an authentic Icelandic experience and ideal for families.

The pool is open all year round, but it's especially satisfying to soak in the hot tubs when it's cold outside.

Hlidarfjall has many great ski slopes.

Anyone from Reykjavik will complain about the inconsistency of the ski season in South Iceland, where the lack of snow can result in the local ski resort Blafjoll only being open for a handful of days in a season.

However, Hlidarfjall in the North can be open up to 180 days a year, covered in a blanket of white, making it one of the most popular things to do near Akureyri in winter.

It's arguably the best ski resort in Iceland. The 2300-foot tall (700-meter tall) mountain has recently renovated ski lifts which are easy to use, making Hlidarfjoll ideal for both experienced skiers as well as beginners.

Go for a beer bath in the North of Iceland

Hop into a bath full of hops! This novel experience is available year-round but becomes even more tempting when the weather outside isn't ideal for sightseeing or hiking.

The Bjorbodin ('Beer Bath') Spa opened in 2017 and offers visitors the unique opportunity to soak in a relaxing bath of young beer and live beer yeast.

The beneficial effects of yeast on the body and skin are well-documented, and with a follow-up relaxation session, you're guaranteed to leave feeling rejuvenated.

Although you can't sip the suds in which you're soaking, you can enjoy a cold beer straight from the draft tap that sits adjacent to every tub. Book your admission to this unusual spa experience  and feel your worries wash away in a tub of beer.

The northern lights are only visible when it's dark, and the sky is clear, so it's best to view them during the wintertime.

Goðafoss Waterfalls

Prepare to be captivated by the sheer magnificence of Goðafoss, a true gem among Icelandic waterfalls. Standing at an impressive height of 12 meters and stretching 30 meters wide, it exudes a breathtaking beauty that few falls in Iceland can rival. As you explore the walking trails that wind their way around this natural wonder, you’ll be treated to an unforgettable display of elemental power and serene elegance.

But Goðafoss is more than just a stunning waterfall—it holds immense cultural and historical significance in the hearts of Icelanders. Translating to “Waterfall of the Gods” in Icelandic, its very name evokes the ancient tales and mythologies that have shaped the nation. Legend has it that over a millennium ago, an influential chieftain, moved by a momentous decision to steer his people toward Christianity, performed a symbolic act of transformation at this sacred site. He cast aside the remnants of the old pagan gods, plunging them into the rushing waters of Goðafoss. In that single act, Goðafoss became a living testament to the pivotal Christianization of Iceland—a tangible embodiment of the country’s spiritual evolution.

Soak in the ambiance and let your imagination wander as you stand before Goðafoss, taking in its grandeur from multiple vantage points along the enchanting trails. Every step unveils new perspectives, each one revealing a different facet of its majestic allure. Be sure to savor this extraordinary moment, for it is a gateway to the wonders that lie ahead on our exhilarating journey through the Diamond Circle.

Ásbyrgi Canyon

Prepare to be awe-inspired as we venture into the heart of Ásbyrgi Canyon, a mesmerizing horse-shoe-shaped valley that beckons with its natural wonders. As our Diamond Circle tour continues, this remarkable destination unveils its awe-inspiring grandeur. Brace yourself for an encounter with nature’s breathtaking masterpiece.

Spanning an astonishing width of 1 kilometer and stretching 4 kilometers in length, Ásbyrgi Canyon is a testament to the sheer scale and immensity of Iceland’s landscapes. Surrounding this magical realm are towering, vertical cliffs that stand guard with a commanding presence, reaching heights of up to 100 meters. Prepare to feel dwarfed by their imposing magnificence, as they create a dramatic embrace around a picturesque forest and an idyllic pond. The sheer beauty of this enchanting panorama is simply indescribable.

The cliffs of Ásbyrgi Canyon serve as both a sanctuary and a stage for a variety of avian life. Delicate and resilient, many bird species have made their homes within the hidden nooks and crannies of these rugged rocky walls. Listen to the melodic symphony of their calls and witness their graceful flights as they navigate this natural labyrinth. It’s a sight that will leave you in awe of the intricate balance of life that thrives within these majestic cliffs.

But Ásbyrgi Canyon isn’t just a geological wonder; it also holds a place in the tapestry of Icelandic folklore. According to ancient tales, the distinctive shape of this canyon was forged by the mighty Sleipnir, the legendary eight-legged horse of Norse mythology’s revered god, Odin. Legend has it that with one thunderous stomp of his hoof, Sleipnir left an indelible mark on the land, carving out this extraordinary canyon. It’s a testament to the mythical origins that permeate every inch of Iceland’s awe-inspiring landscapes.

While folklore adds a touch of enchantment to Ásbyrgi Canyon’s story, geologists offer a different perspective. They posit that this geological masterpiece is the result of colossal glacier flooding, unleashed by the powerful river Jökulsá á fjöllum—the very same river that gifts us the magnificent Dettifoss waterfall. It’s a reminder of the raw forces that shaped this land, leaving behind a natural wonder that continues to awe and inspire.

As you step foot into Ásbyrgi Canyon, let the enormity of its cliffs, the serenity of its forest, and the whispers of its avian inhabitants transport you to a realm where nature’s grandeur and mythical tales intertwine in perfect harmony. This is a place where dreams are woven, where legends come to life, and where the true essence of Iceland’s untamed beauty reveals itself.

Dettifoss Waterfalls

Embark on an exhilarating quest to unlock the secrets of the Dettifoss waterfall, an awe-inspiring masterpiece that reigns supreme in the realm of Icelandic wonders. Brace yourself for a pulse-pounding adventure that will leave you breathless and spellbound, as you witness the raw power and untamed beauty of nature in its most exhilarating form.

Prepare to have your senses ignited as you draw near to the majestic Dettifoss. With each step, anticipation dances in the air, electrifying the atmosphere with irresistible energy. The ground beneath you trembles in anticipation, a prelude to the grand unveiling of an extraordinary natural spectacle.

As the mighty torrent crashes against ancient rocks, a thunderous symphony reverberates through the canyon, sending shockwaves of awe down your spine. You find yourself mesmerized by the sheer magnitude of this watery titan, defying gravity as it plummets down a towering 44-meter drop. The deafening roar engulfs you, stirring a primal instinct deep within your soul.

Dettifoss is no ordinary waterfall—it is a force of nature unmatched in its breathtaking might. With an astonishing volume of 193 cubic meters of water per second, it has rightfully earned its title as the most powerful waterfall in all of Europe. Its relentless surge, fueled by the convergence of rivers and the mighty Vatnajökull glacier, unveils a display of nature’s fury that commands both respect and admiration.

Prepare to be swept away by the allure of Dettifoss, a mesmerizing icon that has captivated the world’s imagination. Its magnetic pull has drawn adventurers and explorers from far and wide, seeking to witness its extraordinary grandeur firsthand. From its prominent appearance in Ridley Scott’s epic masterpiece, Prometheus, to its rise as a symbol of untamed beauty, Dettifoss has claimed its rightful place in the annals of natural wonders.

In the presence of Dettifoss, time seems to stand still. The world around you fades into insignificance as you become one with the roaring cascade. It’s a moment of transcendence, where the power of nature merges with your own sense of wonder, leaving an indelible mark on your very being.

The lake’s tranquil surface reflects the sky above, mirroring the ethereal colors and clouds that dance across the heavens. It’s a sight that captures the imagination, evoking a sense of wonder that is truly ineffable.

But our journey doesn’t end there, for we have a special treat in store. We come to a halt at a magnificent viewpoint, perched high above the lake. From this vantage point, the splendor of the landscape unfolds in all its glory. The panoramic vista stretches far and wide, allowing us to drink in the breathtaking scenery that surrounds us.

In the distance, we spot the majestic Skútusstaðir craters , rising proudly from the shores of the lake and even occupying a small island within its watery embrace. These ancient formations, remnants of fiery eruptions that once shaped the land, stand as silent sentinels, guarding the secrets of the past. Their unique presence adds an air of mystery to the already captivating tableau.

Take a moment to immerse yourself in the splendor of this view. Let the serenity of the lake, the grandeur of the landscape, and the intriguing presence of the craters envelop your senses. It is a scene that invites contemplation, a harmonious blend of nature’s artistry and the inexorable passage of time.

As we stand at this remarkable viewpoint, a profound appreciation for the wonders of the natural world washes over us. Lake Mývatn, with its ethereal beauty and the Skútusstaðir craters as its guardians, offers a glimpse into the captivating tapestry of Iceland’s remarkable landscapes.

Akureyri in North Iceland

Nicknamed the ‘Capital of North Iceland’, Akureyri is a town brimming with vibrant culture, breathtaking nature, and historic charm. Whether you’re here for a stopover or using it as a base to explore the untamed north, you’ll find lots of things to do in Akureyri.

You could go whale watching, soak in a geothermal spa, or visit the world’s most northerly botanical gardens – the list goes on. To make the most of your time here, we’ve rounded up the best things to do in Akureyri throughout the year.

  • Discover the North’s capital & its breathtaking surroundings with these North Iceland and Akureyri tours .

1. Go whale watching

Did you know the north coast has some of the best whale-watching spots in the country? Thanks to the nutrient-rich waters here, you’ll find lots of species year-round, including humpbacks, blue whales, and orcas.

To see these gentle giants up close, take a whale watching tour from Akureyri harbor. You’ll sail on Iceland’s longest fjord, Eyjafjörður, and get the chance to spot humpbacks and minke whales in their natural habitat. If you’re lucky, you’ll also see white-beaked dolphins and harbor porpoises.

For even more whale watching opportunities, venture 1 hour outside Akureyri to Húsavík , Iceland’s whale watching capital. Most summer tours here record a nearly 100% sighting rate! To learn more about these incredible mammals, stop by the Húsavík Whale Museum, home to 11 whale skeletons.

2. Explore downtown Akureyri

Akureyri is the unofficial capital of North Iceland and the largest town outside of Reykjavík . If you’re spending a day exploring its lively downtown, there’s no shortage of things to see and do.

The town center is small and walkable, full of historic 20th century buildings, cute shops, and cozy cafés. Many of them can be found on the main street of Hafnarstræti. You’ll also come across a number of art galleries and museums, including Akureyri Art Museum, which showcases local and international modern art.

Take a short walk from the center to the harbor, and you’ll see Hof Cultural Center. This beautiful building hosts different events, concerts and exhibitions throughout the year.

Next up, visit Akureyri church, a striking Art Deco landmark that towers over the town. Akureyrarkirkja, as it’s known in Icelandic, was designed by Guðjón Samúelsson, the same Icelandic architect behind Reykjavík’s iconic Hallgrímskirkja.

It’s the only geothermal spa in the country where you can bathe surrounded by trees and jaw-dropping views of Eyjafjörður fjord. Enjoy the peace and quiet from the comfort of a large infinity pool, which is decked out with 2 swim-up bars.

You’ll also get access to a cold plunge pool, Finnish dry sauna, and a bistro with epic views of the fjord and a cozy fireplace.

Enjoy this nice weather at the botanical garden, a must-visit attraction just south of the town center. Opened in 1912, this public park is home to thousands of diverse plant species that thrive despite being so close to the Arctic Circle.

Wandering through the leafy gardens is the perfect way to spend a relaxing afternoon in Akureyri. Entry is free and the park is open year-round. But if you want to see the flowers in full bloom and enjoy the cute on-site café, then summer is the best time to come.

These interconnected grass-roofed buildings are made of stone, wood, and turf – an excellent insulator from the cold weather.

Nestled 75 km/46 miles (a 1-hour drive) southeast of Akureyri cruise port, Lake Mývatn is a natural marvel celebrated for its unique geological wonders and diverse landscapes featuring volcanic craters, geothermal hot springs, and fascinating lava formations.

Akureyri - Lake Myvatn

Indulge in the soothing waters of the lagoon-like Mývatn Nature Baths , surrounded by breathtaking landscapes, or enjoy activities such as birdwatching, hiking through lava fields, or simply taking in the tranquility of the Icelandic countryside on a sightseeing tour.

The fans of Game of Thrones should know that Mývatn served as a filming location for scenes beyond the Wall.

Akureyri - Dimmuborgir Lava Field

If you are booking a guided tour, keep in mind that Lake Mývatn is often combined with Goðafoss Waterfall due to the proximity of the two locations, making it a perfect day trip from Akureyri port.

When I visited Akureyri, I booked a tour with Get Your Guide, and we had four stops along the way that included Goðafoss Waterfall, Lake Mývatn, Dimmuborgir Lava Field, Grjótagjá Cave, and Námaskarð Geothermal Area. It was a full-day tour adjusted to the cruise ship’s arrival and departure time. I was super happy with the tour, and highly recommend it if you want to explore the best of Akureyri! 7. Húsavík Whale Watching

The charming town of Húsavík lies 76 km/47 miles (a 1-hour drive) northeast of Akureyri cruise port. Nestled on the north coast of Iceland, along Skjálfandi Bay, Húsavík is renowned as the whale-watching capital of Iceland, attracting visitors with the opportunity to see beautiful marine giants in their natural habitat.

Húsavík has a well-deserved reputation as a premier whale-watching destination, with a wide variety of marine species including humpback whales, minke whales, and even the rare blue whale.

Both in Akureyri and Húsavík, you’ll find a selection of reputable whale-watching operators ready to guide you through the waters and provide expert insights into the marine ecosystem of Iceland.

Although whale sightings are never guaranteed, trained operators will transport you to the best viewing areas for observing whales and other marine species.

Besides the whale-watching tours, in the town, you can visit the Húsavík Whale Museum and the wooden Húsavík Church , go hiking, explore nearby lava fields, or indulge in the local cuisine that Húsavík is famous for.

Is a Holland America Iceland Cruise Worth It?

07/17/2024 by Kristin Addis 1 Comment

Last summer, my mother and I were invited on a Holland America cruise to Alaska and wondered if we’d like it. Were we even cruise people?

Fast forward to this summer, and we’ve just stepped off our second Holland America cruise, this time, to Iceland, and for a second time yes, it was worth it. Maybe I am a cruise person after all.

Handing zero logistics, cooking, cleaning, and not having to pack up and move or even be awake for the transit is nice, especially with kids.

It was an adventure filled with breathtaking landscapes, wonderful excursions, and exceptional onboard experiences. Here’s a rundown of my journey and why I highly recommend this cruise for anyone looking to explore the beauty of Iceland and beyond:

Table of Contents

The Itinerary: Faroe Islands, East Fjords, Akureyri, Ísafjörður, and Reykjavik

Faroe islands.

Our journey began with a unique twist as we diverted to the Faroe Islands from our departure point in Copenhagen due to weather conditions, a deviation from the usual stop at the Shetland Islands. It turned out to be a delightful surprise, with the Faroes offering rugged cliffs, quaint villages, and a glimpse into a lesser-explored corner of the North Atlantic.

It’s been on my bucket list for quite some time, and I opted to do the Vestmanna Seacliffs coastal cruise excursion which gave me a whimsical look at sheep grazing on impossibly steep cliff sides over the water, waterfalls, layered green sea cliffs, and puffins among other sea birds.

East Fjords Iceland

holland america cruise iceland

Next, we sailed through the enchanting East Fjords of Iceland, where jagged mountains meet serene fjords, creating a landscape straight out of a fairy tale. The views from the ship were simply stunning, giving me a perspective I hadn’t experienced during my previous visit by land when we drove the ring road.

We opted to visit a glacier lagoon and see Icelandic ponies, but to me the real star was the landscape and the nice drive out to these stops in such a beautiful, rural part of the country.

Akureyri, Iceland

holland america cruise iceland

In Akureyri, known as the capital of North Iceland, we explored bubbling hot spring fields and even ventured inland to witness the beauty of Godafoss, the “Waterfall of the Gods,” which never fails to impress with its sheer power and beauty.

Ísafjörðurm West Fjords Iceland

holland america cruise iceland

One of the highlights was Ísafjörður in the remote West Fjords, where we took an unforgettable tour to Vigur Bird Island.

Puffins, with their comical charm, stole the show as we explored this tiny haven of birdlife. It was a photographer’s dream come true!

icelandic puffin

I also loved how pristine this part of the world is. There’s very little development and it’s mostly just nature unfolding, with glacier capped mountains and humpback whales and seals in the distance, all of which I saw within a few minutes of each other.

Reykjavik, Iceland

holland america iceland cruise

Our journey concluded in Reykjavik, where we rented a car to explore the Southern Waterfalls along with a couple of stops on the Golden Circle . We also partially walked the Fimmvorduhals trail behind Skogafoss, which I hiked in the reverse all the way from the highlands Laugavegur trail with one of my BMTM Adventures groups a few years prior.

However I have never seen Iceland in bloom before, and that was a treat on this trip. The wildflowers were just stunning! This truly must be one of the best places in the world to travel in June.

holland america cruise iceland

Having previously driven the Ring Road , this cruise provided a unique perspective as we sailed past remote towns and coastal vistas that are often missed on land-based trips.

Onboard Experience with Holland America

We wanted to sail with Holland America after a fabulous Alaska experience due to the cleanliness, amenities, good food, and most of all, the service. The ship itself, Neiu Statendam, was a haven of comfort and luxury. The entertainment options were diverse and impressive, with live blues, rock and roll, classical performances, and soothing piano music filling the evenings.

Let’s talk about the food—oh, the food! Varied and delicious, each meal was a nod to our surroundings. From fresh seafood to perfectly cooked steaks and delectable desserts, dining onboard was an experience in itself.

Included Food

iceland akureyri tours

The main dining was fantastic, as were the other included meals like the Lido, which is a bunch of pop up style restaurants all throughout a deck of the ship with different kinds of food, Dive In burgers, and New York Deli and pizza. We also loved the Dutch Cafe, where we had drinks from their barista and the apple pie.

iceland akureyri tours

Pinnacle Grill

This appeared to be the most popular restaurant. It offered surf and turf. If they have the lemongrass soup appetizer when you sail, definitely get it!

It is also open for lunch, unlike the other paid restaurant upgrades. I thought this was a steal, considering we got a nice steak and appetizers and dessert for only $15 each!

Rudi’s Sel de Mer

iceland akureyri tours

This is the highest-end restaurant onboard, with the smallest capacity — and also, of course, my favorite.

It’s a tranquil seafood restaurant, and the halibut and steak special were both excellent. They also had lobster, crab, and other seafood delicacies available. I loved the apple crumble as well!

iceland akureyri tours

This Asian-flavors-inspired restaurant was my second favorite, with satay, curries, a nice  tom kha gai , and orange duck. They were also very understanding and accommodating of our nut and soy allergies. Definitely get the yuzu cheesecake for dessert!

iceland akureyri tours

The Italian restaurant with seating near the windows offers sharing-style Italian dishes. It’s a must-do if you’re looking for higher-end pasta, meatballs, seafood dishes, and desserts.

Ship + Service

holland america iceland cruise

What really stood out were the little details that made a big difference. The ship was impeccably clean at all times, and despite the size, it never felt crowded. We appreciated the peace and quiet, especially at night—no noisy neighbors to disturb a well-deserved rest.

iceland akureyri tours

The staff onboard were exceptional, particularly with our son. Their warmth and attentiveness added a personal touch to the journey, making us feel truly welcome and cared for. We had remembered this fondly from Alaska and wanted a repeat of that amazing service, which we got.

holland america alaska cruise

The room was more spacious than I expected on a cruise, and would feel even roomier if one didn’t have a crib taking up a good chunk of the desk area. There’s A LOT of storage, so it’s easy to stay organized and not have the room feel cluttered. It was cleaned twice a day, with a room steward and assistant assigned specifically to you. They were pretty much always around and available to help with anything that we needed.

This was also our first time experiencing some of the music and entertainment on board, since last time we had a younger baby and an earlier bed time. I loved the live bands and variety of musical options at any given time.

There were also all the amenities you’d hope for – a sizeable gym, spa (with sauna), two pools (one indoor) and five hot tubs, a track that provided amazing views, and medical facilities. It is truly a city on the sea – one I appreciate has greatly reduced plastic use (there are no plastic bags, bottles, or to-go containers on board).

How to Book

Holland America is offering various routes and variations on this particular itinerary all the time. It’s easy to add on and make it a longer journey, or to explore other itineraries that include more of Norway or even Greenland. Booking with a Virtuoso agent can help you find the best room for you on the ship most suited to your desires, with onboard credits.

Conclusion: A Cruise for All Ages

While Holland America caters to an older crowd, the relaxed atmosphere suited us perfectly. It allowed us to unwind, soak in the stunning vistas, and create memories that will last a lifetime. If you’re considering a cruise to Iceland and beyond, I can’t recommend this experience enough. It’s a perfect blend of exploration, comfort, and exceptional hospitality—a journey that will leave you enchanted and eager for more.

*Holland America hosted my mother and I on this cruise. All thoughts on the amazing excursions and experience are my own.

13 must-see stops on Iceland’s greatest road trip

I celand’s ring road, officially known as Route 1, is a 820-mile scenic paradise for road-trippers looking to explore the country beyond Reykjavik .

Circling the perimeter of the Nordic country, the drive features a non-stop parade of jaw-dropping natural attractions – waterfalls, glaciers, lagoons, black-sand beaches, basalt cliffs, volcanoes.

The route also passes through charming towns and fishing villages and a slew of cultural and gastronomic highlights too. Beginning and ending in Reykjavik and travelling clockwise along the ring road, here are 13 stops along the way you shouldn’t miss.

Reykjavik

If you haven’t been to the Icelandic capital before, you might want to spend a day or two adapting to its uniquely laid-back ‘urban fishing village’ vibe and exploring its many museums, galleries, food and nightlife offerings.

The Making of a Nation: Heritage and History in Iceland at the National Museum of Iceland is a great place for a historic overview, while foodies can find plenty of local and international cuisine at Hlemmur Food Hall, set inside a former bus station. Oh, and don’t leave before trying the heavenly baked goods at Sandholt.

Borgarnes (and Reykholt)

The small, pleasant town of Borgarnes serves as a gateway to north and west Iceland and has a special place in Iceland’s mediaeval sagas.

At the Settlement Centre, you can find info on the Viking settlement of the region as well as on Egil’s Saga, which is set in and around Borgarnes; there’s a decent restaurant too.

A 30-minute drive will bring you to Reykholt, former home of Snorri Sturluson, one of Iceland’s most famous writers and poets. It’s also home to the geothermal Krauma spa, Europe’s most powerful hot spring, Deildartunghver, and not far from the Hraunfossar and Barnafoss waterfalls. Borgarnes also makes a great base for exploring the surrounding Snaefellsnes peninsula.

Hofsós Thermal Pool

You can break up the three-hour drive from Borgarnes to Akureyri by detouring off the ring road to enjoy a dip at this stunning thermal swimming pool.

Designed by the same architect behind the Blue Lagoon, it’s built into a hillside over the sea and has infinity pool-style views out to the fjörd and Drangey island.

Just below the pool are the basalt formations of Staðarbjargavík, once the capital of the local elf population according to local lore.

Akureyri

Iceland’s second-largest town, Akureyri can be found scenically tucked into the bottom of the Eyjafjörður fjörd. It’s a cute spread of churches, bars, art galleries and museums, as well as botanical gardens, and there are a variety of hikes in and around the town. A selection of good hotels make it a good option for an overnight stay.

For dinner, Rub23 has excellent Icelandic fish, lamb, and beef dishes, and some of the best sushi in the country, served with the restaurant’s locally grown wasabi.

Godafoss

Yes, there are quite a few waterfalls along the ring road but it would be criminal to miss the raw spectacle that is Godafoss.

The name, which translates somewhat dramatically as “Waterfall of the Gods,” is said to date back to around 1000 AD – when Icelanders transitioned to Christianity and law speaker Þorgeir Ljósvetningagoði threw his pagan idols into the falls.

Twelve metres high and 30 metres wide, the roar of the curving falls drowns out everything else around; a walking path provides access and several perspectives.

Husavik

Another worthwhile 30-40 minute detour off the main highway, the pretty harbour town of Húsavík is perched up on the coast and home to some of the best whale-watching in Iceland, where some 23 species have been spotted.

The most typical marine creatures seen in the local Skjálfandi Bay are humpback, minke, white-beaked dolphin, harbour porpoise and blue whale, and several companies offer a variety of tours to see them. The town also has thermal baths and a whale museum.

One of the scenic highlights of North Iceland, this otherworldly lake deserves decent exploration. Rich in vegetation as well as birdlife, it’s possible to hike around the area to take in the dramatic lava formations of Dimmuborgir, the Hverjfall crater – one of the largest explosion craters in the world with a diameter two-thirds of a mile long – and the Namaskard geothermal area.

Many walking paths are paved, but you can also take longer trails through the area too. Once done, reward yourself with a well-earned soak in the Myvatn Nature Baths and lunch or dinner at the farm restaurant Vogafjós, whose cuisine is includes locally-caught smoked trout, bread that’s been geothermally baked and dairy products from the farm’s cows.

Egilsstaðir

The largest town in East Iceland, Egilsstaðir makes an ideal base for exploring the broader Eastfjords but has plenty to offer itself, from reindeer-spotting and practising your axe-throwing skills to trekking in the largest forest in Iceland (Hallormsstaður) and swimming in the stylish Vok Baths, set into a local lake. An hour or so away at Hafnarhólmi in Borgarfjörður eystri on the coast, you can also enjoy some puffin watching.

The harbour town of Höfn is picturesque, peaceful – and famous for langoustines. It even has its own lobster festival each summer and there are a couple of excellent restaurants at which to try the delicacy.

The best-known is the harbourside Pakkhús (book ahead) which even has langoustine pizza. Höfn is also a gateway to and base for the majestic Vatnajökull National Park, whose glacial lakes and ice caves can be explored on foot or with guided jeep tours.

Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon

You can encounter more glacial beauty farther along the ring road at the famous Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. The lake is filled with huge chunks of ice broken off from the nearby Breiðamerkurjökull glacier; boat rides and Zodiac tours get you up close and personal to the chunks as well as the occasional seal that likes to rest or or play on them.

Some of the ice blocks wash up on the nearby black-sand beach, hence its nickname “Diamond Beach”. It’s a wonderful place for photos.

Vik, short for Vík í Mýrdal, is a quaint little seaside village a bit further on from the lagoon. It has its own entertaining lava show but the main sights here are the local black-sand beach (Reynisfjara), with its striking basalt columns, the nearby Reynisdrangar basalt sea stacks and Dyrhólaey, a nature reserve popular with puffins galore.

You can use Vik as a base to explore the Mýrdalsjökull glacier via snow scooters, jeeps and snowmobiles. Adding to the thrill, the glacier is home to Katla, Iceland’s most explosive volcano.

Skógafoss is another must-see waterfall. Cascading some 60 metres and spanning 25 metres across, it’s located along the pretty Skoga river. Legend has it that treasure is hidden behind the waterfall, placed there by a Viking settler, but you’re more likely to find the rainbow that often appears here on sunny days.

You can walk right behind the waterfall to better experience its majesty, and a set of stairs leads to the top of the waterfall as well as to the longer Fimmvorduhals trail.

Hveragerdi & the Reykjadalur Valley

Before returning to Reykjavik, turn off into Hveragerði. It’s famous for its geothermal hot springs, greenhouses and the nearby Reykjadalur valley.

Reykjadalur means “steam valley” and, sure enough, it’s dotted with hot springs and mud pools, as well as a geothermal river with boardwalks and rudimentary facilities for bathing. There are also several hikes around the area and activities such as horse riding are also possible.
