Man drops his GoPro from cruise ship to unravel the mysteries of the ocean underneath

The deep ocean has long captivated human curiosity , beckoning explorers with its mysteries and secrets hidden in the depths. There is something about its vast and dark nature that has amazed people for countless years. Despite many advancements made in exploring space, we continue to make interesting observations about life within the massive amount of water that inhabits our planet. Odysseas Froilan decided to creatively use his GoPro to take a look at life under the surface of the ocean while going on a cruise ship .

The video posted on YouTube has amassed 6.8 million views and 117K likes on the streaming platform. At the start of the video, Froilan seems to be holding the camera on the ship, prepping it to be lowered down into the ocean. Within a few seconds, the camera is slowly lowered down alongside the ship's hull to uncover all of the mysteries that lie beneath the surface of the ocean. At first, we see the gigantic part of the ship underwater, with a school of fish swimming past it.

The scene looks surreal as the fish swim close to the camera in a beautiful display of nature's beauty. After some time, a bigger fish comes by, seemingly curious about the camera, but immediately swims away. The video cuts to reveal that the camera has been lowered further down, looking into the vast blue nothingness of the ocean. Different varieties of fish continue to be seen around the camera until, eventually, viewers begin to see the ocean floor.

People are sharing the 10 greatest qualities that make them like someone instantly

The GoPro eventually settles down next to a big chain that is clearly the anchor of the cruise ship. There appear to be even more fish near the ocean floor as the camera pans around. After some time, Froilan starts pulling the camera back up to the surface. Viewers get to see the hull of the ship from a completely different point of view as the camera slowly comes back up. The video cuts to go to the night footage that Froilan captured on the same camera.

Needless to say, there is much less visibility without the Sun and next to nothing is visible as the camera is lowered. It does manage to briefly capture a shark going past the camera, making for a truly scary sight. There also seems to be much less fish compared to what was seen during the day. The ocean bed can be observed thanks to the camera's flash, but it looks much scarier at night. The camera is pulled up again to reveal a shark swimming right next to the camera, coming much closer this time before the video ends.

People were amazed and intrigued by the footage and shared their thoughts about it in the comments section. @calladeem240 suggested, "It might not be feasible, but how cool would it be if cruise ships had a few cameras on the hull so guests can always take a look at what's swimming around underneath them." @Marcomanexists said, "This is simultaneously one of the most interesting and terrifying footage I've ever seen. I'm fascinated by the ocean and marine life, but you'll never catch me anywhere near any large body of water.

Cruise passenger drops GoPro overboard, discovers creatures lurking below

Madeleine Crutchley

The versatile, lightweight design of GoPro cameras has made them a staple in the travel kits of many keen photographers. With an impressive level of durability and easy-to-use interfaces, they’ve upped the possibilities of how travel and adventure experiences can be captured on film.

Often, GoPros are associated with adventure activities, like mountain biking, parkour or diving. The wide, fish-eye lens creates an immersive quality and brings viewers closer to the action. They’re usually strapped to an adrenaline junkie’s chest or helmet, while they barrel down hills, skydive from a plane or swim through the ocean depths.

In the years since the release of the camera, a new genre of travel content has made its way onto the internet. Videos titled with ‘I dropped my GoPro’ uploaded through the early 2010s tended to capture accidental fumblings of swimmers, snorkelers and divers, with cameras plummeting to the sea floor and filming fish, rubbish and seaweed floating by before their eventual retrieval.

However, a refreshed version of the genre now seems to be emerging on YouTube. Curious camera operators have started to attach fishing lines to their GoPros, before intentionally dropping them into the ocean. There are videos where people have cast GoPros off the sides of ships, dunked them near wharves and dropped them down mysterious wells or holes.

This video from a YouTuber with the username Odysseas Froilan sees a GoPro thrown off the side of a cruise ship. Floating through the ocean, it captures schools of fish, the ship’s anchor, the underside of the boat and, when thrown off again in the middle of the night, a shark swimming in and out of the shadows. It’s an eerie and uncanny look at what lies below the boat.

Commenters were taken by the clip, writing:

“The amount of activity in this short vid is amazing. Daytime you get the “friendly” fish and nighttime brings out the eat you fish.”

“I love how the fish immediately come to investigate what just dropped in the water.”

“This GoPro on a string is better at filming than every single person who has ever filmed a UFO/ghost sighting.”

Other YouTubers have taken the format and run with it. Within the last few months, fishing and travelling influencer AnglerUp with Brant has started to cast off a GoPro alongside his lure, capturing footage of fish, turtles, crocodiles, crabs and more ocean critters, with voiceovers describing the lively underwater scenes.

These GoPro videos showcase the capabilities of the handy travel technology and offer an interesting exploration of human curiosity. They’re an exciting opportunity for travellers looking to capture new angles of their worldly experiences - from adrenaline-seeking thrills to mysterious ocean depths.

Man drops GoPro from cruise ship into the depths of the ocean and the result is magnificent yet 'terrifying'

Things get a lot more interesting as the clip transitions to the nighttime footage and a sea creature emerges from the dark.

Man drops GoPro from cruise ship into the depths of the ocean and the result is magnificent yet 'terrifying'

The GoPro camera is great for capturing footage in extreme conditions. Taking full advantage of the camera's prowess, Greek photographer Odysseas Froilan dropped it under a cruise ship to get a glimpse of the ocean life. He uploaded the footage on YouTube and it is equally interesting and terrifying.

In the YouTube video clocking seven minutes and thirteen seconds, Froilan is seen dropping his GoPro camera from the cruise ship into the ocean. In the initial clip of the video, we see a part of a ship before the camera is dropped into the water. As the camera falls into the water, it is briefly swarmed by a school of fish.

In the next few frames, the GoPro is spotted descending into the deep sea. After a brief stay, the camera eventually touches the ocean floor next to the ship's anchor. With time, we see the camera slowly settling down on the ocean floor and making slight movements to adjust the visuals. For a few minutes, we see a panoramic view of the ocean floor with fish swimming by.

The footage then slowly transitions as the camera is pulled back to the surface. As the camera gets close to the bottom of the cruise ship again, fish swarm around the camera. The video continues as the photographer sends the camera back into the ocean water at night. Making its way back again into the marine environment, the camera is spotted descending back into the ocean floor - which visually looks dark at that moment.

The camera finally lays down on the seabed. The pitch-black environment, however, turns scarier due to the presence of sharks in the waters. This goes to show that swimming in those waters at night would not be the best idea as sharks have a reputation for being nocturnal hunters.

The video uploaded on YouTube has amassed almost seven million views and has garnered 117,000 likes. People were in awe of the clip, with most users appreciating the beauty of the ocean in daylight and at night. One user, Calladeem ( @Calladeem240 )  commented, "It might not be feasible, but how cool would it be if cruise ships had a few cameras on the hull so guests can always look at what's swimming around underneath them."

"This is simultaneously one of the most interesting and terrifying footage I've ever seen. I'm fascinated by the ocean and marine life but you'll never catch me anywhere near any large body of water," commented @Marcomanexists and @Jayanit added: "Never thought I would ever see video footage from this perspective. Creative and fascinating to watch. Well done sir." @HunterWinchester666 wrote, "That was fantastic mate! Beautiful, clear footage too. It was so peaceful, I could watch that all day."

One such camera expedition belongs to Odysseas Froilan. His video begins in the well-lit engine room of a cruise ship. 2 Armed with a fishing rod and a GoPro camera, he ventures to explore what’s hidden beneath the ship during the daytime. As he lowers the camera into the water, we witness a breathtaking spectacle of marine life. Schools of fish surround the camera, appearing both intrigued and perplexed by this alien presence. One adventurous pike directly approaches the camera, giving it a good-natured side-eye.

Despite Froilan’s decision not to disclose the cruise ship’s location, the video takes us on a visual tour beneath the vessel. We catch glimpses of the ship’s anchor and observe various exotic fish patrolling the seabed. It’s a captivating dive into the mysterious world beneath the cruise ship, offering a unique window into the underwater realm.

The video’s narrative takes an exciting turn as Froilan transitions to nighttime footage. This time, the GoPro is equipped with a light, revealing the creatures that emerge in the cover of darkness. As the camera descends towards the ocean floor, it unveils more schools of fish and suddenly, a massive object appears—an imposing shark. The shark’s swift and unexpected movements take viewers by surprise, and it swiftly exits the frame, showcasing the extraordinary presence of these enigmatic creatures.

A second shot reveals an even larger shark, accompanied by a remora fish. The video’s raw and unfiltered nature has resonated with over 1.5 million viewers, who appreciate its immersive quality. They note that the absence of background music enhances the sense of being there, beneath the waves, exploring the cruise ship’s hidden underworld.

Youtube viewers were left shocked after gopro footage underneath a cruise ship homes surprising visitors..

Gerrard Kaonga

Gerrard Kaonga

A Greek photographer has disturbed viewers with his deep-sea GoPro footage underneath and alongside a cruise ship.

Photographer Odysseas Froilan initially shared his footage to his YouTube channel in November 2021 and the clip has so far amassed more than 5.3 million views.

Prepare to never want to enter the ocean again and watch the chilling footage below:

Froilan does not give much information about the footage, and it is unclear where in the ocean he lowered his GoPro .

After initially lowering the camera in the water while the cruise ship is anchored, viewers were delighted to see the school of fish seemingly perplexed at the foreign object that had dived into their neck of the woods.

However, it wasn’t until the night-time footage was shown that viewers were left more concerned.

Viewers were initially delighted to see the school of fish seemingly complexed at the GoPro dropping in.

Seemingly out of nowhere, sharks can be seen coming into view of the GoPro camera with one quickly coming into view of the camera night light, only to swim off quickly.

Moments later an even larger shark is seen coming out of the shadows to calmly swim unfazed out of view.

“The way I went from kicking my feet in the air at the cute fishies and thinking ‘maybe the ocean isn’t so scary after all’ in the day footage to blankly staring, terrified, at the night footage, further confirming my intense fear of the ocean,” one YouTube user commented.

Sharks can be seen coming into view of the GoPro camera during the night-time footage.

“This was way more interesting than I thought it would be. Man there’s something primally terrifying about seeing a shark emerge from the darkness like that,” another agreed.

Other comments reinforced viewers’ intention to not swim in the ocean and stick strictly to man-made pools to avoid encountering sharks.

“For years I wondered why there were pools on a cruise ship when there was this great big body of water to swim in. It’s videos like this that make me realize the importance of swimming in chlorine water,” a third user commented.

“I would just like to point out the difference in marine life depending on the time of day. If you ever find yourself on a cruise, do not take a bet and jump into the ocean at night, most sharks are nocturnal hunters and they are basically just waiting for you,” a fourth warned.

Some reinforced viewers’ intention to not swim in the ocean.

Earlier this year a clip went viral on X, formerly known as Twitter , that showed the moment a young man jumped off a cruise ship in the Bahamas for a dare before being preyed upon by sharks.

The video of Cameron Robbins, 18, was viewed more than 10 million times on X in June.

Some claimed the footage showed the moment he was pulled underneath by sharks.

The incident happened on May 24 at around 11.30pm near Nassau, Bahamas off the Blackbeard’s Revenge sunset cruise ship.

On May 27 the United States Coast Guard, who was assisting the Royal Bahamas Defence Force in the search, confirmed the search had been concluded, though his body was never found.

Because it’s allegedly better down where it’s wetter according to Sebastian (I don’t trust him), this is a video from a GoPro that was lowered beneath a cruise ship both during the day and night to see the different sea life that was present there. Unsurprisingly, it’s the same sea life you would expect to see not under a cruise ship. So, if you were wondering if the oceans have evolved freaky-deaky sea life suited specifically for life under a floating city, the answer is not yet, but probably soon.
