What People Say's About Us

Carlos called me 5 mins before class which was very re assuring . Sergio and Marcelo turned up and away we went. Lucy and i would love to write about our experience. The whole 2 weeks were a dream because i dont remember getting any sleep.

Upon reflection I am very grateful that I made the decision to make this journey. On several occasions, I decided not to go, even after making numerous non refundable payments, because I did not trust all of the information I received via the internet.

I had a great time with Argentine Tango. The instruction was fantastic. I also found everyone I met to be very friendly off the dance floor too. It really helps to get a flavor for the country when you can have engaging and open conversation with locals, and that was the case with my guides and instructors. Thank you!

I had a great time, my teachers were brilliant, and the trip to a milogna with one of your staff was really helpful. when i met up with my girlfirend, I was able to take her to a milogna that night, and we were able to tango, thank you so much.

My experience with Argentinia Tango has been great! I want to thank my teachers who have been very professional and very patient with me. I approached this beatiful dance as a beginner and I was a little frustrated not being able even to have the correct posture.

Below is my testimonial. I thought everything was good including the instructors. I enjoyed everything very much, great teachers, milonga and wonderful touring. The guides were also great. . Everything was very well organized in general although there are some things that can definitely be improved.

Argentina Tango: This is just to let you know that the accomodations that you arranged were excellent. The services you provided in addition to dancing were excellent. The two dance instructors which danced with me for six weeks were knowledgeable, fun and I truly had a good experience.

I thought everything was terrific including the instructors. I enjoyed everything very much, great teachers and wonderful touring and the guides were also great. Your people are so nice and I appreciated Carlos calling me to make sure I was happy. Thank you for everything, Nancy

I would like to say that I had an amazing time and was very impressed with the professionalism of your instructors and tour guide. Sergio, Matias and Andrea were absolutely spectacular and we learned much more about the music and the history than we thought we would.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you and everyone, including hotel staff of Hotel Americano for being great and caring hosts of Buenos Aires. My guides: Cynthia, Alicia, Barbara, and Susana showed me their Buenos Aires.

My group and I had an amazing and special experience in Buenos Aires. Communication was excellent in the organisation at short notice, their depth of knowledge of Tango, its history, the cultural relevance that it has today with its subtleties and the passing on of that knowledge and willingness and patience to answer our questions was really appreciated while keeping things really fun. Our lesson was given at the perfect tempo for our novice ability and the time at the Milonga awesome. Muchas gracias

Check what our customers say about us!

Walking Tour : Sylvia was highly knowledgeable of and passionately conversant in the cultural, social, and political history of Buenos Aires and made this a very enlightening experience for me. She easily switched between English and Spanish for the benefit of those among us who were stronger in one or both. Every corner, stop or tombstone had its fascinating story. We kept rushing toward the end to make it in time (to shortly before closing) to the vast visual and historic wealth of the Recoleta Cemetery. HER very apt USE OF THIS LATTER FEATURE as a teaching tool might have come earlier in the tour (although the Sun mightve been merciless at noon) perhaps after the lunch stop in the San Telmo Mercado and I would recommend skipping the touristy hanging umbrella street (which is seen in Most Latin American Cities and not at all special... focus on S.Telmo as she did and maybe leave BOCA for last... as that probably stays open past 6p. She did an amazing job of staying on pace & definitely can conduct a tour of the Cemetery as it's Own Tour! Fascinating.

Walking tour : excellent tour. adriana, our tour guide was very helpful and friendly. strongly suggested, transfer ezeiza airport to the center : airport pickups, local tour arrangements… all are well coordinated. hotel selection is excellent. agustina and other agents on the emergency line provided top notch service. highly recommend tangol to others., downtown hotel in buenos aires to aeroparque transfer : airport pickups, local tour arrangements… all are well coordinated. hotel selection is excellent. agustina and other agents on the emergency line provided top notch service. highly recommend tangol to others., via ferrata & zip line at the sacred valley with lunch : this was a fantastic activity. irving and diego were terrific guides, making sure we were not only safe and comfortable but also having fun. highly recommend., aeroparque to downtown buenos aires transfer : we had an amazing time at the falls. everything worked out perfectly. we were picked up and dropped off as expected. alex was very knowledgeable and helped see and do everything we wanted to do., downtown hotel in buenos aires to aeroparque transfer : we had an amazing time at the falls. everything worked out perfectly. we were picked up and dropped off as expected. alex was very knowledgeable and helped see and do everything we wanted to do., el viejo almacen tango show : staff were friendly and helpful. staff provided service and drinks at frequent times. the show was fast moving and dynamiic. well done..

On this form, they shall inform if they have had a work, professional or personal relationship with any member of the jury from the competition, in the last 6 months (180 days) prior to the championship, such as: having a personal and affectionate relationship with one or more members of the jury; having taken private classes with one or more members of the jury; presenting a choreography in Stage Tango that has been created, reviewed or prepared with one or more members of the jury; having one or both dancers of the couple hired one or more members of the jury – or been hired by one of them- to participate in the same event, performing exhibitions or giving classes within it. This statement made by the contestants will be evaluated by the supervisor and checked with the members of the jury in order to define if any of them will need to refrain from scoring any participant.

3. All the information provided at the time of check‐in will be considered a sworn statement. Any contradiction in the information, subsequent to the signature, may be penalized by THE ORGANIZATION with the subtraction of points, disqualification from the competition, or any other resolution that this body may establish.

4. The national ID card or passport and the registration form must be shown at every stage of the competition.

5. All championship contestants commit themselves to participate in various ceremonies and events planned by THE ORGANIZATION of the Preliminary—such as press conferences, interviews for radio stations and over‐the‐air or cable television channels, etc.—if they are summoned for such purpose.

COMPETITION 1. The competition, in both categories, can be developed in 3 (three) stages, according to the schedule established by THE ORGANIZATION: a) Qualifying Round, b) Semifinal, c) Final. a) Qualifying Round: All registered couples will participate. They will dance one time or twice (on the same or on a different day) according to the schedule. First Qualifying round on Thursday April 9 and Second Qualifying round on Friday April 10, 2020. b) Semifinal: Couples that have been selected in the Qualifying Round will participate on Saturday April 11, 2020. c) Final: Couples that have been selected in the Semifinal will participate on Sunday April 12, 2020.

In the Tango de Pista category, couples will compete in group performances, dancing to three recorded songs, selected by selected by THE ORGANIZATION

In the Stage Tango category, each couple will compete individually, dancing to one song of their choice. The music piece shall not exceed four (4) minutes and must be handed in to THE ORGANIZATION in digital format (mp3 file, storaged on a Flash Memory Drive) during the check-in instance. In that same instance, participants must state the name and surname of the author or authors of the choreography they will present (as it will be requested in the form to be completed). Couples may present different choreographies in the different stages of the contest.

2. At the time of the competition, at least ten couples must attend the qualifying rounds for the competition to be considered official (regardless of the number of couples previously registered). Otherwise, the championship will cease to be official and the winning couple will not be classified to compete in the semifinal instances of TANGO BUENOS AIRES FESTIVAL AND DANCE WORLD CUP 2020 (see PRIZES).

3. The Organization will be entitled to eliminate from the competition those participants that: a) Do not comply with the rules. b) Commit any moral offense or improper act that tarnishes the image of the Championship or may cause displeasure in the public.

4. In order to ensure the impartiality and professional integrity of the jury members, contestants will not be able to participate in seminars, workshops and/or classes taught by any member of the jury, as long as they are in the competition. (This means that in the case a competing couple is eliminated, they are allowed to register to classes and take privates lessons as they will no longer be competing).

4. THE ORGANIZATION will be entitled to eliminate from the competition those participants that: a) Do not comply with the rules; b) Carry out, in the context of or on the occasion of the Competition, inside and outside its facilities, any action of physical and/or verbal aggression against any person, whether participant, member of the jury or the staff, or general public. In the presence of any of these assumptions, THE ORGANIZATION and BA FESTIVALS will implement the disqualification or elimination of competition, for either or both competitors, through documentation proving the reasons for the measure.

5. In order to ensure the impartiality and professional integrity of the jury members, contestants will not be able to participate in seminars, workshops and/or classes taught by any member of the jury, as long as they are in the competition

JURY 1. In both categories, the jury will be composed of a minimum of 4 (four) members, who— understanding and accepting the rules of the competition, and committing to their compliance—will determine the score of the participating couples. The juries will be appointed in accordance with BA FESTIVALS and THE ORGANIZATION of the Preliminary.

2. All the decisions of the jury will not be subject to appeal. By enrolling, participants accept this condition. In case of distrust or disagreement, participants may submit a written statement (in Spanish or English) to THE ORGANIZATION and NOT directly to the panel of evaluating judges. Any jury member who may have had a work relationship or been the teacher of any of the participants of the Preliminary for a period of at least 6 months close to the beginning of the competition, may refrain from scoring such participant. For this purpose, both the voluntary statements of the Jury and the information provided by participants when enrolling will be taken into account. In these cases, to get the couple’s final score, the judges’ scores will be added, and this amount will be divided by the number of jury members who actually voted. The final score for each performance will result from the accumulation of points, given by each member of the jury on a scale of 1 to 10 (with decimals), in accordance with the criteria described in the EVALUATION CRITERIA per category (mandatory document, please read below).

3. The jury will choose a winning couple in each category. Also, the jury (with the agreement of THE ORGANIZATION) may grant awards and special mentions to the second and third place, and will be entitled to award other mentions if deemed appropriate.

4. In exceptional cases (power interruption, incidents on stage, etc.), the jury and the supervisor may determine that contestants should dance to additional songs to arrive at a fair verdict. Participants may not refuse to perform.

5. In case of a tie, the couples with the same final score will have to break the draw, either by dancing two additional songs in the Tango de Pista category, or by performing a new choreography in the stage tango category, until a winning couple emerges from the votes of the jury.

SUPERVISOR Appointed by BA FESTIVALS, the Supervisor will bear the responsibility of ensuring the compliance of the present Rules and properly solve any inconvenience not considered in these Rules and establish or inform about the clarifying or interpretative rules that he considers necessary.

FILMING AND PHOTOGRAPHING THE ORGANIZATION of the Preliminary reserves the right to record all the stages of THE COMPETITION, by any means known or to be known—including but not limited to filming, recording, photographing, digitalization, etc.—by itself or third parties, in order to promote and advertise the event. The recorded material obtained will be exclusive property of THE ORGANIZATION of the Preliminary, who will have to turn a copy of it, as established by the Collaboration Agreement, to BA FESTIVALS. By entering the Championship, participants explicitly and irrevocably authorize the use of the recorded material, without this suggesting—or implying—any compensation for any reason whatsoever by THE ORGANIZATION of the Preliminary and/or BA FESTIVALS, in favor of any person or organization that claims entitlement to any right that may be invoked. This clause also includes, without limitations, all photographic material published and/or made available for promotion, advertisement, etc.

A couple’s registration and subsequent check‐in implies knowledge and acceptance of these Rules by each one of the participants.

*Clarification about dance level:  Participation in both “Tango de Pista” and Stage Tango Categories competitions are open to everyone. Professional dancers and amateur dances of intermediate level and above compete in the same category according to the rules established by Tango Buenos Aires Dance World Cup. Adherence to these rules qualifies our competition to be recognized as valid by the main Buenos Aires event.

The distinction between a “professional” and “amateur” dance has less to do with the level of skill and more with a professional status of the dancers. “Professional” means that dancers make a living from teaching and dancing/performing tango, and “amateur” means that they do not, but it does not always imply that the level of the professional couple dance is superior to the level of the amateur couple.

There are dancers for whom tango is their main source of income. They are likely to be good instructors, but their level of dance and performance can vary: the professional couple can be excellent at dance or not so great. On the other hand, there are good amateur couples who do not teach tango and get no income from performances, but have achieved an exceptional level of dance. There is also the case of stage dancers who only dance choreographed pieces, but are helpless when it comes to social dancing: they cannot dance in milongas. Finally, there are very skilled social dancers (people who only dance in milongas), but who neither teach nor perform tango. They might be excellent salon dancers. To accommodate different ways in which dancers excel at tango, the two divisions for the competition were established: “Tango de Pista” (salon tango; social category for both amateurs and professional) and Stage Tango (performance category for amateur advanced level and professional level dancers).

  • Posture, elegance, technique, connection to the partner and walking style will be the main points of evaluation for all dancers.
  • For the leader’s role, the Judges will give special relevance to musicality, improvisation and navigation (take into account that leaders should avoid more than two musical phrases on the same spot, making it difficult for the round to circulate; they should constantly move counterclockwise without going backwards although it is allowed to perform one or two back steps if the movement requires it).
  • For the follower’s role, the Judges will give special relevance to the skill of following (anticipation or back leading will be penalized), and the footwork technique.

The Complete Guide to Argentina Tango, Buenos Aires

Tango in Buenos Aires

He grabs the back of her head and they stare into each other’s eyes.  They twirl rapidly, then stop dramatically.  Legs flick.  She dips down to the floor, stopping just in time.  Their eyes connect and he pulls her up and into a close embrace.   They move around the dance floor in a spinning blur of color and movement.

This is Tango Argentino.  The heart, the soul, the pulse, the passion of Buenos Aires…

INSPIRATION: Experience Argentina: Tango Buenos Aires

If I say “Buenos Aires”, tango probably comes to mind.  (Well, maybe steak does too.)  Tango is passionate, dark, dramatic, sexy.  Tango was born in Argentina and Uruguay, a hybrid of African rhythms, Cuban moves and European music.  It has roots in Spanish flamenco and Cuban habanera , with elements of Uruguayan candombe and Argentinean milonga .

It dates from the 1890’s and became popular in the early 1900’s.  Its popularity has not waned; in Argentina, tango is everywhere (the genre is called Argentine Tango after all!).

There are many ways to experience tango in Buenos Aires, Argentina , and I recommend them all.  I totally fell in love with tango when I was there.

I was in Buenos Aires en route to Patagonia (read about glacier tours in Patagonia and Perito Moreno Glacier and the breathtaking Laguna Torre hike ). The other main access point to Patagonia is Santiago in Chile (read about taking a food tour and winery tour in Santiago here).

But this time I was in B.A. and was determined to catch as much tango as possible.  I love to experience things as much as possible when I travel, so I wanted to learn how to do the tango, as well as see a professional show and mingle with local Portenos as they danced the night away.

tango dinner show Buenos Aires

Here’s how to experience tango in Buenos Aires (and the highlights for each):

  • Watch a tango show.   RECOMMENDED TANGO SHOW: El Viejo Almacen (daily)
  • Dance at a milonga.     RECOMMENDED MILONGA EXPERIENCE: Book it here
  • Take a tango class.        RECOMMENDED TANGO CLASS: Group class at Conventillo Cultural Abasto
  • See tango in the street. RECOMMENDED STREET TANGO: Plaza Dorrego , San Telmo (Sundays)
  • Gay tango (classes & milongas). RECOMMENDED GAY TANGO: Tango Queer (Tuesdays)

So, let’s look in more detail at each of these options.  I’ll share my own experiences, some experiences of fellow travelers, and some recommendations others have made.

1. WATCH A TANGO SHOW

If you want to be entertained, then you have to see a tango show.  Buenos Aires has the best tango performances in the world.

Note that a “dinner and a tango show” combination is common; however, the food is notoriously average and in most places the dinner IS optional.  It makes for a complete night out, but you can easily have dinner somewhere else then catch the show.

So, where to see the best tango show in Buenos Aires, Argentina?  There are so many to choose from, that deciding which tango show in Buenos Aires to see can be hard to do.  To make your decision easier, here are the best tango shows in Buenos Aires:

El Viejo Almacen

Balcarce 799, San Telmo

I went to this show.  If you want to see a tango show in San Telmo, the heart of tango, then this is a great option.  Dinner is possible, but it is actually served in a restaurant across the street.  When dinner is finished, you move across the street into the tango hall.  It makes it easy to skip dinner!  We had dinner elsewhere and then went to see the tango show.  Two drinks were included in the price.

It’s located in an historic 18 th Century building and feels intimate, as tango should.  Tables are assigned before you arrive, and I had read some reviews online complaining about their table, but we got a table near the front and it wasn’t full the night we went, so there were no bad tables.  There is an upstairs section that would give you a bird’s eye view of the stage. The stage was fairly small with a piano, violin, base and two accordions accompanying the dancers.

El Viejo Almacen stage

There were three couple who performed.  Some were group dance numbers with all six dancers and others  were dances with just one couple, so all of the tango dancers were highlighted.

In between the dance performances were singers performing some vocal numbers and an Andean band during the intermission, which was a popular break between the tango.

tango Buenos Aires show

Was it the best tango show in Buenos Aires?  Well, it was the only professional Buenos Aires tango show I saw, so it’s hard to say, but I thought it was GREAT!  I can’t rave about it enough!  I had looked at several of the tango shows and venues online and this one seemed the best tango show in Buenos Aires, while still having an authentic old-world feel.

If you want to go there, you can book the El Viejo Almacen tango show here .

Rojo Tango Show

Martha Salotti 445, Puerto Madero

This is often touted as the best tango show in Buenos Aires.  It is over-the-top opulence, located in the five-star Faena Hotel in Puerto Madero. As the name suggests (“rojo” is Spanish for “red”), there is lots of red. Red carpet, red banquettes, red curtains, red dresses…  Red is the color of passion and this is passionate, beautiful, stunning!

It’s not cheap, but considered by many of the rich and famous as the best place to see tango in Buenos Aires.  A friend of mine saw this show and LOVED it!

The price includes a three-course dinner, drinks, private transfers to the show and, of course, one of the top tango shows in Buenos Aires.  Book the Rojo Tango dinner show here .

Cafe de los Angelitos

Avenida Rivadavia 2100, Balvanera

This is located in an historic cafe, and is another of the best tango shows Buenos Aires has. You can book just the show, or dinner and the show together for a complete night out.  Book the show (with pickup from your hotel) here .

Balcarce 431, San Telmo

A classic tango show that also includes other performances such as folk music, singers and two orchestras.  Again, you can book tango and dinner or just the tango show.  La Ventana also offers classes in tango (see below).  Book the La Ventana tango (and optional dinner) here .

1064, 5 de Julio, San Telmo

The name says it all -“ it’s a gala tango show. Buenos Aires does them well. Another San Telmo classic.  Book the Gala Tango show (and optional dinner) here .

Madero Tango

Av. Alicia Moreau de Justo 2150, Puerto Madero

I have heard good things about this show – another easy choice.  Book the Madero Tango show here .

Piazzolla Tango

Florida 165 Galeriames

The list of top tango shows in Buenos Aires wouldn’t be complete without this classic.  Book the Piazzolla Tango show here .

2. DANCE AT A TANGO MILONGA

Arguably the best tango in Buenos Aires is not the flashy shows (though I love them), but the tango that real people dance.  If you want to experience authentic tango, not for tourists, then go to a milonga.  Buenos Aires has plenty to choose from.

Milonga actually has three meanings.  The most common meaning is an organized event or a place where people can go to dance tango .  So, you go to a milonga to dance.

Many have classes early in the evening before the dance itself starts, which is super helpful for beginners.  Some also have performances.  However, at their heart, they are places for Portenos to go to tango the night away.

Milonga is also used to describe a type of dance (similar to, but slightly different from the tango), and is also a musical genre .  You so you can dance the milonga to milonga music at a milonga!

So, how do you choose which milonga to go to?  Not all milongas are the same.  Some are good for beginners; some best for expert dancers; some are for early birds and some for night owls.

As a traveler to the city, it can be hard to know which are the best tango clubs Buenos Aires has to offer.

MIlonga tango Buenos Aires

Milonga Tour

One easy option so to take a tour.

If you want to experience an authentic Milonga, Fiona from Passport and Piano recommends a tour with Tango Nightlife.

Joe, our guide was a dancer himself and he was keen to show us two completely different Tango clubs in the Buenos Aires.

The first was a traditional old dance hall, with a reasonably large floor and a DJ playing music from the 1920s and 30s. This dance hall followed the traditional format in which three dances are performed with the same partner, then the DJ plays an entirely random tune while everyone swaps partners.

The second Milonga was called Maldita . It was packed when we arrived at, and I was glad that Joe had booked a table for us in advance. The clientele was much younger, and there was a stage with a live orchestra. The music was much more angular and dramatic with some excellent dancers performing flamboyant moves.

At the end of the night when the orchestra finished there were a few dances led by professional couples.  These were fantastic, and some of their footwork was impressively quick.

Although this tour was reasonably expensive at 240 dollars for three people, it did include transport, entrance to the milongas and a drink at each venue. I thoroughly enjoyed the evening and would highly recommend it. “

This sounds like a great way to experience a Buenos Aires tango club without feeling intimidated. You can book the tour with Tango Nightlife here.

Another way to visit a milonga is to take a tango tour with a tango expert who will show you the milonga and explain all about it, and then t ake a lesson there .  Book this tango tour and lesson here.

Best late night milongas, Buenos Aires

When the milonga you’re at closes and you still want to keep dancing, head to the late night milongas.  These milongas really don’t get started until the wee hours of the morning.

Armenia 1366, Palermo Soho (in the basement of the Armenian Cultural Center)

  • Lessons are available Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday.
  • Live shows some Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays or Sundays (check their website for details)
  • Arrive around 2:00am.  Best around 3:00am – 4:00am.  Closes 6:00am.
  • Friday and Saturday desayuno (breakfast) of medialunas (croissants: literally half moons ) and coffee is served after 4:00am.
  • The place to go after the other other milongas close.  Feels like a nightclub where everyone dances tango.

El Yeite Tango Club

Av. Cordoba 4175, Buenos Aires (upstairs)

  • Mondays and Thursdays
  • Arrive around 3:00am (1:30am to get a table).  Again, people go here when the other milongas close.

Milonga Etiquette

It’s easy enough to go by yourself, as long as you follow some basic (mostly unwritten rules).

  • Check the dress cod e before you go.  Some milongas are casual, but especially on the weekends, many Portenos dress up and you should too.
  • People usually use eye contact to ask someone to dance.  Look for it, make eye contact and nod in reply, then they will approach you.
  • The guy should lead the woman back to her table or chair after the dance.
  • Look to see which direction people are dancing in and follow the same direction .
  • When you arrive and see an empty seat, check with someone to make sure it is OK to sit there .  Sometimes regulars expect to have their regular seat available when they arrive.
  • Speak Spanish if you can.  Milongas are mostly filled with Argentinos and you shouldn’t assume they speak English.
  • Don’t get too trashed .  Have fun, but rowdy behavior is definitely frowned upon.

If this seems too intimidating, you can book a shared tango lesson and a visit to a milonga here .

3. TAKE A TANGO CLASS IN BUENOS AIRES

Of course, it’s fun to see a tango performance, but what better way to fully immerse yourself in tango than to dance it yourself.  Milongas are fun, but it’s hard to join in if you can’t dance.  So take your tango experience to the next level and learn tango in Buenos Aires.  Milongas often start the night with tango lessons, dance studios hold tango classes and private lessons, and it is easy to book a single class or a whole course.

Buenos Aires tango lessons are often in Spanish, but you can find classes in English too, if you don’t speak Spanish.  The cost of tango lessons in Buenos Aires varies – click on the links below to see prices and to book a class if you decide to take a class or course.

There are different options for tango classes in Buenos Aires :

Private tango lessons in Argentina

Take a 90-minute lesson at a dance studio with a professional teacher and up your game before hitting the dance floor at a milonga.  Book a private tango lesson here .

Group tango lessons in Buenos Aires

For something more social, take a one-hour group tango lesson at the Conventillo Cultural Abasto , then a 30-minute tour around the Barrio de Abasto.  Book this group tango lesson here .

The House of Tango, El Beso has classes throughout the week (in Spanish).  If your Spanish is OK, you can contact them directly to book a class.  Check out their website here .

Milonga tour and tango lesson

Visit a milonga and get a lesson there, plus a tour of a couple of milongas in the city.  Book the milonga tour and tango lesson here .

Combine a tango lesson with a tango history tour

Start at the Cafe de Los Angelitos , then visit the Carlos Gardel Museum and learn about Argentina’s most famous tango dancer and tango history, then take a tango class at the La Catedral Club.  Book the tango history tour and lesson here .

Tango course, Buenos Aires

If you want to get more serious than a one-off class, and really want to learn tango in Argentina, then you want to find a Buenos Aires tango school and take a tango course. Buenos Aires has several. Book a one-week tango course here .

Combine a tango lesson with a show

Get the best of both worlds – and appreciate the incredible artistry of the performers on a whole new level.  You can have a whole day in Buenos Aires experience with a city tour, then dinner and the tango show at La Ventana , followed by a one-hour tango lesson by expert dancers. Book this tour/ show and lesson here .

Tango and wine anyone?

A one-hour private lesson followed by a wine tasting inside an old Conventillo.  Sounds like pure heaven to me. Book the lesson and wine tasting here.

4. SEE TANGO IN THE STREET

It’s easy to see a free tango show.  Buenos Aires has great street tango.  Incredibly talented dancers perform outdoors in areas frequented by tourists.  Two classic spots for street tango in Buenos Aires are:

El Caminito

This street ( Little Street ) in La Boca neighborhood is most famous for its brightly colored houses.  However, it’s also Buenos Aires’ tango street. You will often find couples performing tango here for tips.  Buenos Aires street tango is often just as good as many expensive shows, so it’s worth stopping and watching the tango dancers.  Buenos Aires at its best!

Caminito street tango buenos aires

But outdoor tango is not just buskers. One of the best milongas in Buenos Aires is outside.

Plaza Dorrego/ San Telmo Market

Erin Mushaway of Sol Salute gives the details:

“ As the antique vendors dismantle their stands at the end of the San Telmo Market , tango dancers put on their dancing shoes. The back corner of Plaza Dorrego turns into an outdoor milonga every Sunday night at around 7:30 . It’s an excellent opportunity to see an unproduced tango show.

The dancers here are locals that come every week to dance purely because they love the dance. There won’t be any costumes, and some may not even wear the proper footwear, but the passion is there all the same.

To have the perfect Sunday in Buenos Aires, spend your afternoon perusing the market on Defensa Street. As the market winds down, stick around to watch the tango dancers until dinner at once of the many excellent restaurants nearby.”

5. GAY TANGO, BUENOS AIRES

Did you know that tango was originally commonly danced between two men?  The story goes that is started out being danced in the brothels and men couldn’t practice with their wives, since respectable women didn’t dance it, so men practiced with each other outside the brothels.  These days tango is very respectable, but gay tango is alive and well in Buenos Aires.

I really wanted to try tango myself, but felt uncomfortable going to a regular straight milonga or taking a regular group class.  Fortunately, there are several options for gay men and women to tango.  Gay Buenos Aires is centered around San Telmo and there are a few gay milongas.

Tango Queer

Buenos Aires Club / Madilta, Per 571 .  Lesson at 8:30pm and milonga is 10:00pm – 2:00am.

Stefan and Sebastien of the Nomadic Boys gay blog share their experience:

“ One of our favorite tango experiences in Buenos Aires was dancing together (as a gay couple) at the Tango Queer milonga in San Telmo.

Milongas are tango halls, where you can go to see a live show or take classes. Tango Queer takes place every Tuesday evening at the Buenos Aires Club in San Telmo.  It has classes at 8:30pm and later in the evening turns into a show with live musicians and professional dancers.

We loved it and highly recommend it to gay couples. We were total beginners when we went, and were not the only ones.  We quickly made friends with others and had a fantastic time learning the basic first steps.

Once we got a feel for it, we were able to dance around the room together.  We wouldn’t quite feel comfortable dancing as a same-sex couple in any other milonga, so this was already refreshing.

Dancing with your partner to tango is mesmerizing and very romantic.  It felt like we were transported to another era, in the 1940s/50s, together, locked in this mutual embrace.”

Nomadic Boys gay tango milonga

Lugar Gay Guesthouse, Defensa 1120, San Telmo .  Saturday 6:30pm – 8:30pm lesson + small milonga.

Kevin and I weren’t in Buenos Aires on a Tuesday, but we did arrive Saturday , just in time for the weekly 6:30pm gay tango lesson at Lugar Gay .  This is actually a gay guesthouse (you can stay there – and there is a gorgeous rooftop terrace with wonderful views over the neighboring church.  Book Lugar Gay here ).  Note the address above – there is just a plain door with no name labelled on it, so you need to know the address.

It was kind of a strange place to have a tango lesson, but everyone was very friendly and the teacher Edgardo was a professional teacher.

Kevin and I were the only two absolute beginners, but Edgardo did a good job of setting us up with the basics then teaching others more advanced steps, then coming back to us throughout the night.  We were in a side room, so it actually felt like less pressure with no one else watching us.  We learned to walk forward and backward, then walk together (leading and following), plus a sideways step, and then the proper hold.

tango a tours

We finished off with a mini-milonga and joined everyone else for three dances.  We swapped partners after each dance, and the more experienced dancers were told that all we could do was walk, but everyone was very accommodating and encouraging.  I was terrible and was very self-conscious BUT everyone was very friendly.

La Marshall

This is held once a month. There is a class at 8:30pm and the dance at 10:00pm .  Call or email for details (they speak English – or at least the guy I spoke to did).

Avenues Corrientes and Montevideo. Every Monday night.  Class at 9:30pm (with Edgardo) and the milonga/ dance at 10:30pm .

Map of Buenos Aires Tango Halls

The verdict: Tango B.A.

Tango was definitely one of the highlights of Buenos Aires for me.  I loved watching a tango show, seeing it on the street, learning (at least a little) how to dance the tango myself, and then trying it out.

PRACTICAL TIPS: Buenos Aires

Other things to do in buenos aires.

There are a lot of awesome experiences you can have in Buenos Aires that will make your vacation a unique travel experience.

How to get to Buenos Aires

There are two main airports in Buenos Aires.  The international airport is Buenos Aires Ezeiza International Airport (EZE) .  The domestic airport, Buenos Aires Aeroparque (AEP) ,  is across town, not too far from central Buenos Aires, right on the river.  If you are flying to Patagonia, you will most likely use the domestic airport.  I met some people who hadn’t realized there were two airports and went to the wrong one (and missed their flight), so check your tickets.

Compare prices on flights to Buenos Aires on Skyscanner

If you are heading out of town, you can rent a car easily in Buenos Aires.  Rent a car here . If you are driving down to Patagonia, be sure to read my guide to Driving in Patagonia .

How to get to / from Buenos Aires airport

The easiest way to get from the international airport (EZE) to the center of Buenos Aires is a private transfer, which you can book here .

There are also taxis, but when I arrived, there was a two-hour wait for taxis, so I really recommend arranging a private transfer in advance.  If you do decide on a taxi, make sure you book a radio taxi from a booth at the airport.  There is one inside the terminal and a smaller one outside.

There are also counters for private car services.  They are just after customs and also after you enter the main terminal area.

If you are travelling to/ from the domestic airport (AEP), book a transfer here.  There are also taxis.

Getting around Buenos Aires

Taxis are common.  There are radio taxis and regular taxis.  Radio taxis have “radio taxi” on the roof and you can call them.  I had read to only take radio taxis and not flag taxis on the street, but we did and never had any problems (which is not to say that having problems is not possible – exercise caution).

I took taxis a lot – they are easy and not that expensive.

There is an easy-to-use metro/ subway in Buenos Aires called the Subte .  There are six lines.  You need to buy an electronic Sube card and charge it with more money as needed at the ticket office (boleteria).

One trip is $13.50 (pesos) no matter how far you go.  Make sure you go in the correct entrance because at some stations there is no connection between the platforms going in opposite directions. For full information on taking the Metro, check out this blog post .

map Buenos Aires Metro Subte

There are buses everywhere, but to be honest, the Metro or taxis are easier.

Where to stay in Buenos Aires

Read my guide for Choosing the Best Hote l to help make the decision that is right for you.

Where is Buenos Aires and what is the currency?

Buenos Aires is the capital city of Argentina in South America.  It has a little faded grandeur from its glory days, but I like that.  It’s the gateway to Patagonia, but well worth a visit in its own right.

The currency in Argentina is the Argentine Peso (ARS).  The symbol used for pesos is the same symbol used for dollars – $.  Like the dollar, pesos are used to describe the currency in several countries including Chile and Mexico, but like the United States, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, etc. who all use the dollar, the peso in Argentina is a different currency from that in other countries.

Check the current exchange rate here .

Visa requirements for Buenos Aires

Visa requirements do change, so always check whether or not you need a visa to travel.

Find up-to-date information on your home country’s official government visa websites:

  • U.S.A. citizens
  • Canadian citizens
  • U.K. citizens
  • Australian citizens

For citizens of other countries, use this helpful website (though it’s best to always check with the embassy as well).

Best time to visit Buenos Aires

The best time to visit Buenos Aires is the spring (September – November) and fall/ autumn (March – May).  Summer (December – February) gets very hot (average 83°F/ 28°C) and winter (June – August) can get quite chilly (average 52°F/ 11°C).  Snow is extremely rare but it has happened.

I was there in September and the nights were pretty cold, and was there again in November and it was really lovely.

Safety in Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires is a pretty safe city, but as always, you should take basic precautions. Don’t leave anything unattended. Know the most common travel scams so you know how to avoid them.

Planning and packing for Buenos Aires

Start with my step-by-step Guide to Planning a Vacation .

Whenever I plan a trip, I always use a combination of blogs and guidebooks.  I usually use the Lonely Planet, but have also used the Moon guidebooks if the Lonely Planet doesn’t have the region I’m travelling to.  If you are just going to Buenos Aires, which I did on my first trip, I would get the Lonely Planet. You can buy the Buenos Aires Lonely Planet here .

If you are travelling around Argentina, buy the Argentina Lonely Planet here .

I returned to Buenos Aires as part of a trip to Patagonia , which is Argentina and Chile, so I used the Moon guidebook.  Although Buenos Aires isn’t in Patagonia (which is the southern part of South America), Santiago and Buenos Aires are gateways to Patagonia, so the Patagonia guidebook includes sections on both cities.  Buy the Moon guidebook for Patagonia here.

When you are ready for your trip, check out my International Trip Packing List .

Additional consideration: Travel Insurance

You should absolutely never travel without travel insurance.  My father’s partner ended up in a hospital for a week when she was travelling and would have incurred a bill of about $100,000 if she hadn’t had travel insurance!  For a full low-down on buying travel insurance, check out my Travel Insurance Guide here .

A great insurance option is Travelex.  It has coverage for all you’ll need. You can swap this link for  either compare Travel Insurance plans here or get a quote right now:

The Best Places To Experience Tango In Argentina

tango a tours

Argentine tango is an extremely varied and social dance medium that is the pride and joy of Argentinian locals. For them, it is a way of life, an expression of their culture. It is a pure representation of their heritage and a symbol of the nation’s creativity, with hundreds of teachers, guides and festivals located around the country. We take a look at the top ten places to experience this influential genre of dance. Argentinian tango has a complex and unclear history with many different styles of the dance being currently practiced. These styles originated from the 1900s and are popular today. Tango Canyengue is a rhythmic style of tango which contains all the fundamental elements of traditional Argentine tango. Tango Orillero refers to the style of dance that developed away from the town centers where there was more available space and therefore more freedom. And Salon Tango is danced socially in the salons of Buenos Aires. These styles were practiced throughout the golden era of Argentine tango (1935-1952) when milongas, a tango event, were held in large dance venues and full tango orchestras performed. After a lull, tango then re-emerged at the end of the Argentine military dictatorship in 1983. Since then new styles have developed such as the Tango de Fantasia, Tango Nuevo and Estilo Milonguero.

The picturesque Sunday market, which began in the 1970s, is a popular attraction and a good place to watch the locals perform tango throughout the day. At the end of the day, when the market starts to close, free tango lessons are often given in the Plaza.

People packing for a tour

Formal wear

Although there is no written dress code, you may want to dress up for a tango show or a night at the Teatro Colón, one of the world’s best opera houses.

Wind and waterproof coat

Patagonia is famed for its chilly climate and strong winds, so you’ll need to pack a sturdy coat, scarf, hat and gloves to stay warm.

Versatile shoes

Argentina has a myriad of terrains and you’ll need shoes that can take you dancing across a tango hall, and hiking through rugged mountain trails.

Adaptor plug

In Argentina, the standard voltage is 120 V and the power plugs and sockets are of type C and I. The standard frequency is 50 Hz.

The sun is extremely strong in Argentina, and you’ll need sunglasses (and sunscreen) to protect yourself, even in winter when the gleaming snow can be blinding.

Pack for sustainable travel

Consider your environmental impact when you next take a trip and go single-use-plastic-free by packing a reusable water bottle, a steel straw, your own shopping bags and refillable toiletry bottles.

Buenos Aires Tango Shows & Activities

A couple dance tango. Buenos Aires tango show, in the birthplace of tango

For many, tango is synonymous with Argentina.

Seeing a tango show in Buenos Aires is one of those obligatory tourist activities visitors feel compelled to do, just like seeing a Broadway production while visiting New York City.

While most of these glamorous shows have little to do with ‘real’ social tango as it’s danced in a milonga, the production levels are high and the shows are a fun night out on the town to enjoy Argentina’s most famous cultural export .

Many of the professional performers are local legends and have participated in the Buenos Aires Tango Festival and World Cup .

Mora Godoy, choreographer of the Tango Porteña show listed below, famously danced with former U.S. President Obama when he visited Buenos Aires in 2016.

Almost all of the shows include an Andean folkloric segment in addition to tango, so the shows encompass a wider overview of traditional music and dance in Argentina of which tango is just one genre.

Below is a curated list of Buenos Aires’ tango shows.

There are a variety of shows on offer, from smaller, intimate theater-like shows to large, splashy productions with dozens of singers, musicians and dancers.

This list covers most of the shows since there is no accounting for taste — only a few that have gained a reputation for providing poor value have been intentionally left off

Two women and a male dancer perform a tango move at the Rojo Tango Show.

This dinner show, set in a sultry 1920s-style cabaret, is also celebrated for its high-quality three-course meal that begins with champagne and continues with excellent wine.

The ambiance is enchanting, with dim lighting, plush seating, and a live orchestra setting the stage for an unforgettable evening.

The dancers, dressed in revealing costumes, move with a seductive grace, captivating the audience with their skill and passion.

It’s a night of indulgence and sensuality, where every detail is meticulously curated to transport guests to the ‘golden age of tango.’

Señor Tango

A pair of tango dancers do an acrobatic move at the Señor Tango Show.

Señor a Tango is a stylized Las Vegas-type show that continues to ride on its reputation as one of the city’s grandest tango productions.

It is popular with locals, in part because it is one of the lowest-priced tango shows in the city.

Due to the impassioned Spanish-only speaking parts, this production gets mixed reviews from foreigners who don’t understand Spanish.

The show is a mix of dancing, song, and orchestral numbers, some veering very far from tango. Expect elaborate costumes, pyrotechnics, the appearance of live horses on stage and a spirited rendition of “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina” for the finale.

→ Book the Señor Tango Show with Dinner now

 Tango Porteño

Steps from the Obelisk , Tango Porteño highlights the ‘Golden Decade’ of Argentine tango, after World War II, when tango rose from the underground and became accepted by the general public.

Taking place in the theater Metro, this Broadway-style spectacle takes visitors back through a tango journey featuring the music of Canaro, Piazzolla, De Caro, Gobbi, D’Agostino and many others including Troilo and Pugliese. Dinner is a three-course meal with several optional entreés,  paired with Argentine wines.

Cafe de Los Angelitos

The historic Café de los Angelitos is a popular Buenos Aires attraction for both locals and visitors.

In the evening, the café hosts one of the city’s most popular and gimmick-free tango shows.

The dramatic show has an authentic ‘Golden era of tango’ feel and features a talented quintet, 14 well-choreographed dancers and two singers.

Madero Tango

Dancers onstage at the Madero Tango Show

One of Buenos Aires’ largest and glitzy tango productions, Madero Tango in the Puerto Madero neighborhood takes visitors through a tango journey, starting with its humble origins in the 19th century, through its popularity among the middle class, up to modern-day tango spin-offs including tango-jazz fusion and ‘tangotronica’ paired with aerial dance.

The show is directed by Gustavo Zajac, known for his work on Broadway, including Victor Victoria, Tangorama and Nine.

This show features some of Argentina’s most well-known dancers, Laura Fidalgo and Hugo Paty.

This glamour-filled extravaganza is for those looking for an energetic Broadway-style tango production.

The dinner service staff is professional and attentive as well. This show is popular on Christmas and New Year’s Eve, as visitors are able to join the party and view fireworks in the neighborhood after the show.

 La Ventana

A bandoneon player on stage at the La Ventana Tango Show

Set in an elegantly refurbished tenement building of San Telmo , La Ventana is one of the more intimate tango shows.

The show includes music by the celebrated Juan D´Arienzo orchestra, two tango singers, eight evocative tango dancers and great costumes.

The performance touches on other cultural highlights with an Andean folk music segment, folkloric ballet, an adept gaucho showing off cowboy skills and a patriotic, if predictable, ‘Don’t Cry for me Argentina’ climax.

Querandi Tango Show

Four pairs of costumed dancers on stage at the El Querandi Tango Show

Set in a historic 1867 hall a few steps from City Hall in Monserrat, this is one of the more intimate, low-key tango shows, known for its tight quartet on accordion, piano, violin and stand-up bass.

Joining them are two pairs of well-seasoned crooners and four sexily dressed couples dancing the tango, following a plot line that focuses on the tango of the late 19th century until 1925.

The accompanying dinner service here has a reputation of being one of the better ones among the tango shows.

 Tango Esquina Gardel

Tango dancers below a raised orchestra onstage at the Esquina Carlos Gardel Tango Show

In the Abasto neighborhood of the late tango great Carlos Gardel, this sensual tango show runs through the history of tango decade by decade with lots of fancy footwork.

Tango Esquina Carlos Gardel features a total of 25 performers on stage including a typical tango sextet led by Erica di Salvo, along with twelve dancers and two singers.

 El Viejo Almacen

El Viejo Almacen tango house

El Viejo Almacén is one of the smaller tango venues, located in a 200-year-old building in a traditional 3-story ‘tango temple’ in the San Telmo neighborhood .

This show is a good one for those looking for something more authentic and less Las Vegas.

Dancers performing on stage at the Viejo Almacen Tango Show in Buenos AIres

The show includes a very professional sextet, precise dancing by four couples on a small stage, four singers and, as with several other shows, an interlude by an Andean folk group.

The dining area is separate from the actual tango venue. While the dinner here gets mixed reviews, travelers who stick to the Argentine specialty of steak usually leave happy.

 Alibe Tango Show

Two pair of tango dancers, with musicians in the background at the El Aljibe Tango Show

The Aljibe Tango Dinner Show is a newer show popular with families, as it has an earlier start and end time than other tango shows in Buenos Aires.

This intimate show, set in a restored historic building in Monserrat, features professional dancers and musicians, and an excellent bandoneón player.

This show highlights Argentina’s widely under-appreciated folkloric music and dance tradition, in addition to tango.

The music of Toad the Wet Sprocket is so baked into the DNA of Santa Barbarans of a certain era — when the only place to buy our music was in record stores — that my eyes nearly popped out of my head when I heard that this summer marks the 30th anniversary of their platinum-selling album Dulcinea . The homegrown band is hitting the road this summer on a tour that includes co-headlining with the Gin Blossoms, opening for Barenaked Ladies, and solo dates, including a stop at the Lobero Theatre on Thursday, August 29.

Ahead of the tour, I caught up with bassist Dean Dinning, a San Marcos High School grad — how is that no one ever calls these Royal alums frog princes? — who grew up in town alongside lead singer Glen Phillips, guitarist Todd Nichols, and original drummer Randy Guss (Carl Thompson now plays drummer).

Let’s start with the origin story. Is it really true that Toad the Wet Sprocket met in a theater class at San Marcos?

Let’s call it the theater department, but we were all in Oklahoma together at the same time, I believe. But people knew each other from various places. … None of us were, you know, sporty kids; we were singing and dancing kids.

So you started playing together?

Yeah, really casually. … It was what we did on a Friday night. … Todd and Glenn started writing songs together. … When they wanted to finally play live, that’s when I came in. I was known for being kind of a keyboard guy. I wasn’t even a bass player at that point; I was playing keyboards on these songs that they had recorded. They had really good songs even right at the beginning. … They had structure, they went somewhere, and they said something. And it was different. I was aware of what was going on in the local music scene. I mean, I went to the Rollercade in Goleta and I saw the Tan play. But this was something else.

How did you go from playing keyboards to playing the bass?

We were working on new material, and one day, there was a song that just didn’t seem to want to have a keyboard part. I had a bass and they said, “Do you want to try the bass again?” And so, I just put it on. I came up with a great part, that very first day that everybody liked. And I was like, “Hey, I think you know, I think this is something I can do.”

I had a misunderstanding between myself and the bass guitar early on in my life, I didn’t realize what you could do with it, until I really started listening to it and picking it out in songs and really getting into the Beatles, and a lot of ’60s music, like the Who and things like that. Once I understood that it could be much, much more than just playing the roots at the bottom of the chords, so that everyone else would sound good, that’s when it started to become fun.

You still play keyboards sometimes, and you’re doing some new videos?

We shot some videos a few weeks ago for a project that we’ve been working on, which is essentially an acoustic greatest hits album. It’s a reimagining of our best-known songs, but placed in an acoustic environment and recorded in the studio. It’s not a live performance. It’s not pretending to be a live performance. It is a very sculpted and very thought-out and arranged acoustic reimagining of a bunch of our songs, and we’re going to release the first three, one after another during the touring season.

tango a tours

So, with Toad, obviously, you’re touring this summer, but how much time does the band spend playing together when you don’t have a tour in the works?

We’ve been working on this recording project. So, we’ve been playing more than we have in a lot of years. … It’s been really great to have a project to work on during the off time. The tours are very planned; everybody’s got their own schedules and we need to put the tour in its own place, and we try to play at the time when honestly the best shows are out there, which is the summertime.

That makes sense. I’ve always been curious about [Santa Barbara artist and musician] Brad Nack. How did he factor into your early career?

Brad was just really, really important. I don’t know whether anything would have happened without Brad. Brad came to a show. … And he had been in the Tan and had gotten a record deal with Warner Brothers. But then things didn’t really pan out and Brad still had a publishing deal with Warner Chappell. He needed to turn in 10 song demos a year, and he was behind.

So, he made us a deal. “I want you guys to be my backup band on four songs, because I really need to get these finished and sent in. And instead of paying you, how about if I pay to have two of your songs recorded at the same session.” And we said, “Great.” So, we went in; we played on his songs; we recorded two of our songs. … And that was the beginning of our first album, Bread & Circus .

We later went back with Brad; he wasn’t really our producer so much as he was what he called a coach. We recorded eight more songs, and put out Bread & Circus on cassette. Brad introduced us to a guy named Chris Blake, who had managed the Tan and had gotten the Tan their record deal. Chris loved our band and started working with us. So really everything came through Brad — I still hang out with Brad to this day.

I love that. That’s a good story about the Santa Barbara connections, of which there are many. What can we expect from the Lobero show?

It’s gonna be a great show. The Lobero is a great venue. It’s a great place to work. It’s right there in Santa Barbara; nobody has to drive anywhere. You can just come and have a good time. It’s going to be a nice night.

Do you have a favorite Toad song?

It changes all the time. But I’m partial to a song of ours that we did on our album in 2015 called “California Wasted.” … I still love playing “Walk on the Ocean” every night. It’s a song that I don’t know if anybody else could have done that song except us. And I like it because it’s really unique. And it’s really weird that it managed to become a hit after “All I Want,” because we were like, “Let’s release something that sounds like only we could have done it and see what happens.” And it worked. And it sort of became a theme song for us as an artist. We’re identified with California. “Walk on the Ocean” has all these great images in it. It’s a very thoughtful song. It really sums up everything that we do, in a nice way. And we play it in every show.

Toad the Wet Sprocket plays at the Lobero Theatre (33 E. Canon Perdido St.) Thursday, August 29, 7:30 p.m. See lobero.org .

Panama City Has Gone From Mere Stopover to Bona Fide Stay

Like its namesake canal, Panama has historically served as a gateway to other ports of call throughout the Caribbean and South America. But in the last few years, the country's capital city has emerged onto the global stage: Magnificent hotels are preserving the architecture of Casco Viejo , the colonial center. Restaurant openings are showcasing Panama's diversity and culinary flair. And getting to the Dubai of Central America (so named for its skyscraper-studded cityscape) is easier than ever, thanks to new flights on hometown carrier Copa Airlines and stops by cruise lines, including Norwegian , Crystal , and Oceania , at the recently expanded Fuerte Amador terminal. Yes, you can do a single shore day—but you'll want to come back for more.

The hotels preserving the history of Panama City

Dazzling hotels are reimagining landmark buildings to celebrate the legacy of Casco Viejo , Panama City's colorful old town. Located next to the centuries-old Spanish colonial home Casa Góngora , which survived multiple fires over the centuries, Amarla Casco Viejo opened in 2022 as an eight-room relaxed-luxury refuge which sells art that benefits local Indigenous communities and is convenient for snorkeling excursions to the nearby Pearl Islands .

American Trade Hotel became a hotel in 2013, nearly a century after it was first built in 1917 as the headquarters of the American Trade Development Company. Its colonial design and Jazz Age energy draws tourists and locals alike to its recently reconceptualized music lounge, The Club. Once dedicated solely to jazz, it now also hosts salsa and tango nights, spotlighting the city's diverse live-music scene.

Neoclassical grande dame Sofitel Legend Casco Viejo opened its doors in 2023 after a to-the-studs renovation of the Club Unión, constructed in 1917 as a social hub for the Panama City elite. Most rooms have sea-facing views, as do the expansive spa and pool, the wellness and fitness center, and a restaurant patio perfect for cocktails at sunset. And what was once an 18th-century Jesuit monastery now sparkles as Hotel La Compañia , an 88-room miniature universe that takes up an entire block of Casco Viejo. Its latest addition, unveiled this year, is the restored Villa Ana , a historic four-story mansion just up the street that now offers a restaurant, a gallery space, a speakeasy, and a cigar bar, all themed around the former owner's eccentricities.

In Panama City, the country's gastronomic riches collide with its multicultural history.

Where to go in Panama City for nature

The Panamanian capital is a city in the jungle, ringed by numerous natural reserves. Parque Natural Metropolitano offers day and night tours led by guides who share insights about the conservation area's history, flora, and fauna (try to spy howler monkeys and sleepy sloths). Its designated pathways are good for independent hikers of all levels; some have lookout points over the city. Ancon Hill is a more casual trek but just as much a walking safari: Keep an eye out for toucans, poison dart frogs, and charming cat-size rodents called agoutis. If you're in town as part of a ship's shore excursion, the Frank Gehry–designed Biomuseo , just 15 minutes away from the redesigned Fuerte Amador cruise terminal, has both nature and air-conditioning.

The restaurants putting Panama’s diversity on the plate

Panama’s provinces boast many at-the-source culinary experiences: decadent chocolate tastings at Bocas del Toro; distilleries in Herrera Province that make seco, a sugarcane liqueur; the famously delicate Gesha (a.k.a. “Geisha”) coffee in Chiriquí. But it all comes together in the capital, where the country's gastronomic riches collide with its multicultural history. New homegrown dining rooms are serving sumptuous global fare with Panamanian touches.

At Kaandela , in Casco Viejo, Top Chef Panama alum Edy Acedo splices grilled, smoked, and raw ingredients into dishes like pork belly lollipops and clams with plantains. Inside Popino , in the tony neighborhood of Punta Paitilla, guests find Art Deco interiors, live jazz, and artful dishes like bok choy with pan-seared corvina. Sibling spots Kanibal and Calle Dragones both debuted this year atop a parking garage near the historic Barrio Chino . The former is a slinky rooftop bar with inventive cocktails (go for the ones with Panamanian rum) and killer views of the skyline; the latter is a scarlet-clad nightclub with a packed performance calendar and a kitchen inspired by the region's long-standing Chinese diaspora, led by chef-owner Luis Pous . At Cantina del Tigre , which earned a spot on Latin America's 50 Best Restaurants list last year for the first time, chef Fulvio Miranda focuses on reviving Panama's unique take on ceviche.

Panamanian musician and educator Danilo Pérez on his favorite spots in the jazz-crazy capital—including where he goes dancing with his family.

“Top jazz musicians come to play at Salotto Italiano , where I like the food and the vibe; you can actually talk over dinner and listen to the performers. And the students put on great jazz shows at the Fundación Danilo Pérez too.”

Watering hole

“People know Maito because it's on that list of Latin America's 50 Best Restaurants, but I go there because it's near where I live in the San Francisco neighborhood. Their garden-like outdoor bar is nice for after-dinner drinks.”

Swell times

“When I was learning to surf at Playa Venao , just outside the city, it finally clicked for me when I fell into the rhythm of the waves—like hearing music. That, with the blues and greens of the area, was a harmonizing moment.”

Anyone can dance

“My wife, my daughters, and I love to go to the rooftop at Selina Casco Viejo, where we dance like crazy. The crowd is all ages, and it makes me feel comfortable there. Sometimes I'll sit at the piano and play.”
