Dramatic video shows Coast Guard rescuing man who went overboard on Carnival cruise

By Kerry Breen

Updated on: November 25, 2022 / 9:07 PM EST / CBS News

A passenger who fell off a cruise ship late Wednesday night was rescued on Thursday evening.

The 28-year-old man was reported missing by the crew of the Carnival Valor at around 2:30 p.m. on Nov. 24, according to a press release issued by the U.S. Coast Guard . Rescue crews were quickly amassed. The crew of a bulk carrier, identified as Crinis, spotted the man in the water and alerted the Coast Guard to his position. He was rescued around 8:25 p.m., about 20 miles south of Southwest Pass, Louisiana.

The man, who has not been identified, was "responsive but exhibiting hypothermic-like symptoms" when he was found by a Coast Guard aircrew and received emergency medical services at the New Orleans Lakefront Airport, Coast Guard petty officer Ryan Graves told CBS News. He is in stable condition.

The Coast Guard shared video footage of the rescue on Twitter , showing the moment the man was found and brought aboard an agency helicopter.

Matt Lupoli, a spokesperson for Carnival, told CBS News that the man was at a bar with his sister on Wednesday night, and he disappeared after leaving to use the restroom. His sister, whose identity has also not been made public, alerted crew to his absence when he did not return to his stateroom overnight.

"We are beyond grateful that this case ended with a positive outcome," said Lt. Seth Gross, a Sector New Orleans search and rescue mission coordinator. "It took a total team effort from Coast Guard watchstanders, response crews, and our professional maritime partners operating in the Gulf of Mexico to locate the missing individual and get him to safety. If not for the alert crew aboard the motor vessel Crinis, this case could have had a much more difficult ending."

Carnival's Care Team is "providing support to the family members of the missing guest who were sailing with him and remain on board," Lupoli said. The ship is bound for Cozumel, Mexico.

"We greatly appreciate the efforts of all, most especially the U.S. Coast Guard and the mariner who spotted the guest in the water," Lupoli told CBS News.

Heartbreaking video of a couple missing their cruise

It’s the stuff of nightmares for a traveller – especially a cruiser..

A video uploaded to YouTube on Sunday shows a couple rolling up to the dock just as their ship, Royal Caribbean’s Symphony of the Seas starts to sail away.

According to Newsweek, an onlooker shot the footage from the building next to the cruise harbour and it shows the dock workers pulling the ropes off the ship as the couple sprinted towards the gangway at the port in the Bahamas.

The couple then move towards the stern of the ship where they appear to yell back at one of Royal Caribbean’s crew members. It appears that one of the ship officials tell the couple that the thrusters have been turned on and it is impossible for them to board the ship.

As cruisers, most of us know that cruise lines have extremely tight schedules they need to follow, and the lines will be charged extra time that they spend in port. The cruise lines also give guests ample warning of the times that the ship will be departing the visiting ports, and what time you need to be back from exploring or from your shore excursions.

Here are some of the handy tips that will help you if you miss your ship.

Keep important information on you

When you’re heading out for a shore excursion, make sure you keep photocopies of your passport, credit cards (if you don’t intend to take them ashore with you), driver’s licenses as well as phone numbers of your ship as well as the port agent. The cruise lines will usually provide these on the daily schedules you receive the night before. Also, keep the numbers of your country’s embassy, travel agent and travel insurer. You can then contact any of these people to try and get you to the next port to meet the ship.

Find a port agent

Cruise lines will have port agents stationed in the port area to assist you if the ship has left without you. In some cases, when cruisers are late, the ship’s crew will often remove the passenger’s essential items like phones, passport and medication to leave it with port agents. They will then help you make further travel arrangements.

Use those phone numbers

The phone numbers you have will come in handy. The contact on your ship can help you figure out the next steps to meet the ship at the next port. The crew can also help you book flights and interim accommodation if you can’t meet the ship the next day. And if you don’t have the necessary identification on you, your embassy will be able to help you get to the next port.

Make travel arrangements

If you miss the ship, you’ll have to either make your way to next port or make arrangements to get home. Either way, this will incur additional costs and your travel agent and travel insurer might be able to help you make plans.

youtube missing cruise ship

I have been on ships where passengers just missing the ship have been taken out on the pilot’s boat and put on the ship when it is already under way. I have seen this happen several times.

I was lead to believe that if you book a shore tour through your ship they will wait for you to get back if your tour is running late for whatever reason. If this is incorrect it makes me think twice about booking shore tours from now on.

If you’re on one of the Ship’s excursions the ship will wait for you. The person in charge of the tour will contact the ship and let them know there will be a delay. As comments above have mentioned there is literature available with contact numbers to get in touch with the ship if you have a problem but as one of the comments above mentioned, it’s often the same “special” people who are late nearly every time.

Many years ago on the Fairstar we waited for well over an hour after our scheduled 10pm departure from Suva FijI. A crew member was late back from a night out on the town. We were all very merry and singing up on deck when eventually a cab pulled up at the dock with the missing crew member who was assisted aboard. We all cheered as the ship got under way immediately. Turned out to be our Italian captain who was late back. He had shown throughout the cruise he was quite accustomed to having as much fun as the guests. This is a true story from 1984. Fortunately I haven’t come across another captain like him.

Going on a cruise is like being in a hotel with the chance of drowning ! No thanks!

But we don’t know why this happened. Maybe a traffic hold up? We can’t comment on it, unless we know how it occured. A long time cruiser myself and I have never missed a departure, but I have seen people rush on at the last minute due to a tourist mini bus breakdown, and another time due to something similar. So lets us not be to ready to criticise this couple.

Quite sadly, we have seen this happen numerous times, but the shipping line is not responsible for your lack of planning. There is written information, there are numerous announcements before and after the ship docks, and people still just don’t get it……no, they won’t wait……

Really it serves them right and teaches them a lesson for future cruises. Expecting to hold up +4000 other passengers. You’re told what time to be back and there is a sign as you leave the ship clearly stating the time you need to be back and departure time that is usually 30 mins later. They don’t sail then either if someone is missing. Announcements are made over the ship public address system paging those missing and I been on ships that have waited anything from 30 mins more to an hour. If people just expect that the ship will wait for them they are very wrong. You will often find that every port someone is late its often the same people.

Absolutely zero sympathy.

I saw this happened several times on a Mediterranean Cruise. People turning up late after the gangplanks up or missing the last Tender back . Last year on a boat cruise on the Queen Elizabeth we had the experience of one of the speakers actually missing the boat!

People Who Mysteriously Vanished From Cruise Ships

Juliet Bennett Rylah

Cruises are supposed to be happy, carefree moments of maritime bliss; what could go wrong on a vacation on the sea? In reality, there has been a shocking number of cruise ship disappearances , and over 165 people have gone missing since 1995. Cruise ships traverse the vast oceans and often maintain entertainment options into the wee hours of the night, and there's certainly no shortage of libations flowing for those on board. Some passengers have fallen overboard , while other guests have disappeared via more mysterious means.

Investigations into such disappearances can often be inconclusive, as missing passengers are frequently never found. And while security footage can sometimes provide clues, some videos have produced more questions than they have answered. For that reason, the families of many cruise ship victims have written about their tragic experiences in an attempt to increase awareness about cruise ship safety.

A Mysterious Photo Might Point To What Happened To Amy Lynn Bradley

A Mysterious Photo Might Point To What Happened To Amy Lynn Bradley

The disappearance of Amy Lynn Bradley is a very bizarre story. Bradley was a 23-year-old woman from Virginia who went missing while on a Royal Caribbean International cruise with her family in March 1998. On the evening she disappeared, Bradley was at a club on the ship. She shared a drink with members of the house band after their set, then went off on her own at about 1 a.m., according to one of the bandmates . Bradley was later spotted by her father at about 5:30 a.m., and he said she was asleep on the balcony of their cabin. But by 6 a.m., Bradley had vanished. At the time of her disappearance, the ship had been headed from Aruba to Curaçao, Antilles. The ship docked as the search for Bradley began. A pair of tourists claimed to have seen Bradley in Curaçao, saying they recognized her tattoos, yet Bradley remained missing.

In 1999, a Navy man claimed to have encountered her in a brothel. He said she told him her name and asked for help, saying she was being held captive there. In 2005, someone said they saw Bradley in Barbados. On an episode of Dr. Phil , Bradley's parents said they had been sent a photo of a woman that could have been Bradley via an anonymous sender. In the photo, the woman is scantily dressed, which adds fuel to the theory that Bradley was kidnapped and sold into sexual slavery.

Rebecca Coriam Was A Disney Cruise Employee Who Vanished At Sea

Rebecca Coriam Was A Disney Cruise Employee Who Vanished At Sea

Rebecca Coriam , 24, was an employee on the Disney Wonder cruise ship. She disappeared on May 22, 2011, as the ship was sailing off the coast of Mexico. She was spotted on surveillance video talking on one of the ship’s internal phones and appeared upset. Another passenger approached her and asked her if she was okay, to which she appeared to say yes. She then hung up and walked away.

The most common theories are that she was swept overboard while at the crew pool or that she jumped or fell from Deck 5. Yet no theory is particularly compelling, and what truly happened remains a mystery. Others say she was in a turbulent relationship and could have been upset, yet her family states that she would have never willingly gone overboard. Even authorities clash over what really happened to Rebecca Coriam, with some stating it was a simple, yet tragic case of someone slipping overboard and others alleging foul play .

George Allen Smith IV Disappeared On His Honeymoon

George Allen Smith IV Disappeared On His Honeymoon

George Smith disappeared from the MS Brilliance of the Seas in July 2005. He and his new bride, Jennifer, were on a two-week Mediterranean honeymoon cruise and were headed from Greece to Turkey. It is believed that Smith went overboard, but how that happened is a mystery.

The Smiths had dinner before engaging in a long night of drinking. Both were reported to have been very drunk. The Smiths' on-ship neighbor said he later heard loud talking, an argument, and a thud coming from the Smiths' cabin. Blood was later found on the canopy beneath the cabin, indicating that Smith had fallen or had been pushed. Jennifer was not with Smith when he went missing. She had wandered off elsewhere and passed out in a hallway. She was woken up and led back to her cabin by crew members in the morning, where neither she nor the crew members noticed anything amiss. Jennifer slept three hours before heading to a massage appointment.

She claims to not remember much of the night prior, and to this day, no one admits to knowing what happened to Smith. Some believe he was shoved overboard by men he encountered at the casino, while others believe, in his state of intoxication, he became disoriented and fell.

Fariba Amani Disappeared While On A Cruise With Her Boyfriend

Fariba Amani Disappeared While On A Cruise With Her Boyfriend

Fariba Amani , a 47-year-old Vancouver, Canada, woman, vanished in February 2012. She was on a Bahamas Celebration cruise with her boyfriend of eight months at the time, 46-year-old Ramiz Golshani.

Golshani said he last saw Amani at the ship's gift shop at about 1 a.m. before heading to the casino alone. When he returned to their cabin, she was not there, and he went to sleep. In the morning, at about 7 a.m., he awoke and looked for her. After an hour, he told the ship's crew that he could not locate his companion. They, too, searched for Amani, but she was never seen again.

Amani’s sister said that her sister's relationship was troubled and that Amani even once considered hiring a private investigator to see if Golshani was cheating on her. However, there is no concrete evidence to suggest foul play was involved in Golshani's disappearance, and what truly happened to her remains a mystery.

Russel Terence Rebello Died A Hero

Russel Terence Rebello Died A Hero

Russel Terence Rebello , 33, died a hero. He was a crew member aboard the Costa Concordia , which smashed into a reef and capsized in January of 2012 off Giglio Island, Italy. A total of 32 people were killed in the wreck, and Rebello stayed aboard to help other passengers get off, giving one of them his lifejacket.

For months, it was not clear what happened to Rebello. The grim conclusion to the mystery came three years later when Rebello's body was found, still on the ship.

Annette Mizener Won A Cruise, Then Disappeared

Annette Mizener , 37, won a Carnival cruise to the Mexican Riviera in December 2004. She took her parents and her teenage daughter along for the trip.

On the night of her disappearance, she sang karaoke with her daughter, then hit the casino. Her parents quickly became concerned when Mizener did not show up to play Bingo with them as scheduled later that evening.

Mizener's purse was discovered on one of the ship's lower decks, near a railing, leading many to believe she somehow fell or was pushed overboard. Yet an extensive search conducted by the Coast Guard and the Navy failed to find any trace of Mizener, and the FBI's investigation was inconclusive. The only camera that might have caught what happened was blocked by a map of the ship.

Merrian Carver Disappeared On An Alaskan Cruise

Merrian Carver Disappeared On An Alaskan Cruise

Merrian Carver, 40, disappeared from a Celebrity Cruises ship in August 2004.

Carver had gone on the trip alone and disappeared on only the second day of a seven-day Alaskan tour. Though one of the crew members reported that Carver seemed to be missing, the ship failed to respond. When they found Carver's belongings still in her cabin after the cruise had ended, they simply donated them to charity. They never reported her disappearance to police. It was Carver's family who filed a missing persons report after not hearing from her for days. They were not even aware at the time of the filing that Carver had gone on a cruise.

Royal Caribbean, who owns Celebrity Cruises, ruled the disappearance a suicide, but without a proper investigation, Carver's family will never know.

Hue Pham And Hue Tran Vanished While Celebrating Their 50th Anniversary

Hue Pham, 70, and Hue Tran, 65, went missing while on a Carnival Cruise ship heading from Barbados to Aruba in May 2005. The couple had gone on the cruise to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. They were traveling with their daughter and granddaughter.

The couple vanished from the ship, leaving behind only their shoes as a clue, which were found on the ship's deck. Though some have speculated the couple committed suicide, their son , Michael Pham, doesn't buy it. He said they were happy and had been planning a trip to Vietnam to see relatives.

Micki Kanesaki Was Allegedly Murdered By Her Ex

A convoluted case surrounded the alleged murder of Micki Kanesaki , 52, who disappeared from a Mediterranean cruise in 2006. Kanesaki went on the cruise with her ex-husband, California lawyer Lonnie Kocontes, 48. At about 1 a.m., ship officials say she left her cabin to fetch a cup of tea. Her ex later woke up to find her missing.

Kanesaki's body was discovered days later on the shores of Calabria. Kocontes indicated that Kanesaki, who had been his second wife, may have been suicidal, though her family refuted those claims. For years, Kanesaki's case went unsolved. Kocontes remarried a third, then a fourth time.

In 2013, Kocontes was arrested for Kanesaki's murder. Prosecutors alleged that he had strangled her and tossed her overboard. Kocontes's third wife, who had testified on his behalf during initial investigations in 2006, did a 180 in 2013, telling officials that Kocontes had killed Kanesaki. His motive, prosecutors allege, had been to inherit Kanesaki's estate.

Christopher Caldwell Disappeared While On A Trip With His Betrothed

Christopher Caldwell, 36, disappeared from a Carnival Cruise ship headed from Miami, FL, to Cozumel, Mexico, in July  2004. Caldwell had gone on the cruise with his betrothed.

According to a letter written by Caldwell's family as posted on International Cruise Victims, Caldwell and his fiancée had dinner and drinks before his fiancée decided to turn in, and Caldwell decided to visit the ship casino alone. When Caldwell's fiancée awoke in the morning, she found that Caldwell had never returned.

Caldwell was last spotted on the ship's deck. The bartender who saw him said he seemed extremely intoxicated. No one knows what happened next, though it is suspected that Caldwell toppled overboard.

John Halford Vanished On The Last Day Of His Cruise

John Halford , 63, disappeared from the ship Thomson Spirit while on an Egyptian cruise in April 2011.

He disappeared on the last day of the cruise before the ship would dock. He was slated to see his wife the following day at the airport when he returned home to Milton Keynes, England. He sent her a text message, then ate dinner and went for drinks at a bar on the ship's upper deck. He was last seen at about 12:30 a.m. His bags were packed, and his glasses, phone, and passport were found in his room.

Though Halford was last spotted drinking, no one who interacted with him thought he was drunk, and his wife said he gave no indication of being suicidal. No one knows what happened to him, whether he fell overboard or something else.

In the middle of the ocean, no one can hear you scream.

Search for man who fell off Carnival cruise ship near Florida is suspended

The Carnival Magic cruise ship.

The Coast Guard on Wednesday night suspended the search for a cruise ship passenger who is believed to have fallen into the sea east of Florida on Monday morning, officials said.

Ronnie Peale, 35, was identified as the passenger who fell about 4 a.m. as the Carnival Magic cruise ship was around 180 miles east of Jacksonville.

“The decision to suspend the active search efforts pending further development is never one we take lightly. We offer our most sincere condolences to Mr. Peale’s family and friends," Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr. Christopher Hooper said in a statement .

The Coast Guard said it was notified around 6:30 p.m. Monday that a passenger had fallen. The search involved HC-130 Hercules airplanes, a HC-144 plane and a cutter, which is a ship.

More than 5,171 square miles were searched, the Coast Guard said.

The Carnival Magic is around 1,000 feet long and has a capacity of almost 3,700 passengers, in addition to around 1,300 crew members, according to the cruise company. It had been scheduled to arrive Tuesday in Norfolk, Virginia.

Newly emerged video footage, recorded minutes before a woman fell overboard from the Carnival Valor cruise , shows her struggling with cruise ship security.

The 32-year-old African-American woman, who remains unidentified, fell from the Carnival Valor ship into the Gulf of Mexico on Wednesday, when it was 150 miles off the coast of Southwest Pass, Louisiana .

Passengers said that the woman appeared in a frantic state following an alleged disturbance in a hot tub on the ship and jumped off from the tenth floor into the ocean.

Now a new video, recorded on a mobile, shows her struggle with three security guards who are tightly holding her hands behind her back. Earlier reports claimed she was handcuffed, however, in the video she wasn’t cuffed.

She is heard screaming “Alicia” as guards help her up a flight of stairs and off the pool deck. The video doesn’t show the moment she fell and it isn’t clear how she she broke free from the guards. However, it shows horrified passengers rushing to the balcony to find out what happened. One of them is heard asking: “who was she?”

A life preserver is seen in the water, reportedly thrown in by the crew to help her stay afloat. However, the woman disappeared soon, the eye witnesses say.

The ship circled for hours looking for any sign of the woman, however, resumed on its route later after the Coast Guard took over the search and rescue efforts which were suspended hours later.

“The decision to suspend a search-and-rescue case is never one we come to lightly,” said Chief Warrant Officer Tricia Eldredge, command duty officer at sector New Orleans. “We offer our deepest sympathies to the family during this difficult time.”

The cruise company says their team is providing support to the guest’s husband who was traveling with her, as well to the rest of her family.

Insider Today

Two passengers were left stranded at an Italian port after they arrived too late and their cruise ship started to leave without them.

The pair were due to embark on a nine-day cruise on the MSC Splendida around the Mediterranean, starting in Bari, Italy, on August 15, MailOnline reported.

But a TikTok video shows the couple frantically waving and pleading with the crew to wait for them. The gangway had already been removed, it appeared, with the ship set to sail.

"Is the captain there, please?" the man shouts in Italian in the video. "Captain, wait for us, please. You can do it if you want to," he adds.

But it was to no avail.

"The cruise didn't leave even a minute over time. We felt there was little to no effort to find those people whether they were there or not," one passenger told MailOnline.

According to the MSC Cruises website , "check-in closes two hours before the ship is due to depart in all embarkation ports."

Ugo Patroni Griffi, president of the Port System Authority of the southern Adriatic Sea, told Italy's La Repubblica newspaper the couple "tried to ask the ship to turn back or at least to stop operations. Obviously, this is impossible for cruise ships that have time constraints and that are very expensive operations."

MSC Cruises did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Insider, made outside of normal working hours.

THIS is the haunting moment a cruise ship passenger falls to his death - with the tragedy captured on camera by an unwitting tourist.

The split-second freeze frame shows the person falling from the side of the 14-deck Norwegian Spirit in front of a family with a young boy.

Horrifying footage showed the man falling in front of tourist Kenji Lao Wang

Completely oblivious tourist Kenji Lao Wang captured the footage as he filmed himself and his family on the cruise ship on August 8.

The chilling video showed the couple standing with their child as they excitedly talked to each other by the railing on the deck.

And then in the top left of the frame, the shape of the man suddenly comes into view as he plunges towards the ocean.

Screams can be heard and a horrifying splash, with the members of the ship's crew rushing to help.

She said: "It took a long time to finally find the person.

"Everyone was on the boat watching the lifeboats rescue people."

The cruise liner departed from Keelung Port in Taiwan on Sunday for a six-day trip to Nagasaki in Japan and South Korea’s Jeju Island.

It was returning to Taiwan when the passenger fell overboard.

The cruise was stopped for nearly 40 minutes while staff activated safety protocols and launched search boats.

The man’s dead body was found in the water shortly afterwards.

The victim was a 30-year-old man surnamed Li who lived in Taoyuan, Taiwan.

He boarded the ship with his brother on August 4.

His body was reportedly stored in a freezer until the ship docked at Keelung Port.

Superyacht sinks latest: British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch missing after disaster off Sicily; wife among those rescued

At least one person has died and six are missing, including the tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, after a superyacht carrying mostly Britons was sunk in a tornado off the coast of Sicily. Mr Lynch's wife and a one-year-old girl are among the 15 people who have been rescued.

Ship tracking data shows that the Bayesian travelled to other parts of Sicily before it sank.

Yesterday the boat was seen off the coast of Cefalu before it travelled towards Porticello, MarineTraffic data shows, our OSINT producer  Olive Enokido-Lineham  reports.

The data shows the yacht also travelled around four of the Aeolian Islands - just north of Sicily - in the days before.

Sky News is unable to confirm who was sailing onboard at the time Bayesian travelled around Sicily.

Mike Lynch told a journalist who interviewed him only last month that he was "about to go on a very long holiday" having spent more than a year under house arrest in the US.

Danny Fortson, West Coast correspondent for The Sunday Times, told Sky News that Mr Lynch was ready to take a "big deep breath" and relax with his family after being acquitted in a high-profile US fraud case in June.

Mr Fortson said the case had "hung over his head for a decade" as Mr Lynch believed there was only 1% chance he would be found not guilty of crimes for which he could've been jailed for 25 years.

After being cleared, the journalist said Mr Lynch kept saying: "This is like I have a second life, I have a new lease on life, I’ve won my freedom, now I need to figure out what to do with the rest of my life."

Barely a month later, Mr Forston said, "it's kind of hard to believe" Mr Lynch is now missing.

It's been a busy day of developments after the sinking of a luxury yacht hit by a tornado off Sicily in the early hours.

It was confirmed this morning that one person had died, six people were missing and 15 had been rescued.

Then early this afternoon, we learnt that the yacht was owned by the British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch and his wife, Angela Bacares.

Mr Lynch, 59, was confirmed as missing, while his wife, 57, is among the survivors.

Here we answer key questions about the disaster, including what might have caused the sinking and what else we know about the people onboard:

We've got more images to show you of Bayesian, the superyacht that sank overnight.

These stills are taken from undated footage of the 184ft yacht, owned by Mike Lynch and his wife Angela Bacares, which was uploaded on to YouTube three years ago.

Shortly after his acquittal in a high-profile US fraud case in June, Mike Lynch gave an interview to the BBC.

Describing the moment he was declared "not guilty" in court, he told  BBC Radio 4 : "Until you hear the words - you can't call it and at that point it is indescribable the way in which you jump between two universes."

The entrepreneur said it was "very hard" to describe the moment he was cleared of all charges but he "knew that the prosecution case had fallen apart".

"We knew we'd done a great job, but you're reliant on 12 ordinary people," he explained.

Asked if he blamed himself for getting himself into the situation, he said "there were certainly times" he thought he could have gone back and done things "in a defensive way".

"Rather than sending an email in 12 seconds, you could have sat there and thought if a clever lawyer spends an hour on this how will they misinterpret it and then write another five sentences," he said.

But, he said, he "knew he had done nothing wrong".

Deep divers are searching the water but are yet to find any of the six people missing after the yacht sank, an Italian journalist has told Sky News.

Angela Corrias said that according to eyewitness accounts, the yacht was moored just outside the port.

"It wouldn't have taken them long to go to the port but suddenly they were hit by a tornado and it seems it broke the sailing mast and this is why the boat capsized," she said.

Describing where the boat was anchored, she said the harbour was "quite popular" and this was also "high season".

She said: "Eyewitnesses are saying that it seems like there was a party and then around 4.30am they could still see the boat and then all of a sudden the boat disappeared."

Deep divers are under the water, she said, but they "still haven't brought anyone out yet".

As we've been reporting, missing entrepreneur Mike Lynch was acquitted against all odds in a high-profile US fraud case in June.

Our business presenter Ian King says he saw Mr Lynch not long before he was extradited to the US in May last year and the businessman was "absolutely adamant he had done nothing wrong".

"He was charged on a number of counts, including wire fraud," he says.

"It sounds worse than it is - it can boil down to sending an email which the US authorities don't like.

"It was an immense role of the dice on his part.

"Most people that get taken to court in this way will go for some plea bargain deal but Mike was determined to have his day in court and face it down.

"The odds against that are astronomical and 97% of people who face criminal charges in the US and don't go for a plea bargain will end up being convicted.

"So it was a huge gamble on Mike Lynch's part."

Ian wrote this excellent analysis after Mr Lynch's acquittal:

Angela Bacares, 57, the wife of missing businessman Mike Lynch, is confirmed to be among those rescued after their yacht sank off Sicily.

As we've been reporting, 15 people have been rescued, including a one-year-old girl and her mother.

Our Europe correspondent Siobhan Robbins  has been speaking to a local mayor in Palermo who told her that many of the survivors are "deeply disturbed" by what happened.

"It was the middle of the night when this storm came in," she says.

Six people are still unaccounted for, including the tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch and at least three other Britons.

"We know 22 people were onboard when it was hit by severe weather in the early hours of this morning ," she adds.

Incredible way man survived 20 hours in shark infested water after being 'seconds from death'

Incredible way man survived 20 hours in shark infested water after being 'seconds from death'

James michael grimes can't recall falling into the water.

Callum Jones

Callum Jones

Back in 2022, a man somehow survived 20 hours in shark infested waters, despite being 'seconds away from death'.

James Michael Grimes had been enjoying himself on a Carnival cruise ship with his family the evening before Thanksgiving.

After becoming an 'air guitar champion' on board, Grimes went to the toilet at around 11pm.

However, what happened after that remains a mystery to this day as the next moment Grimes can recall is waking up in shark infested waters somewhere near the Gulf of Mexico.

It really is the stuff of nightmares.

Speaking to Good Morning America following the incident, Grimes said: "The next thing I know, I regained consciousness. I was in the water with no boat in sight."

At this point, from facing jellyfish to rip currents and the shark infested waters, Grimes could have easily accepted his fate.

However, the then 28-year-old decided he was going to make it out alive.

He added: "I felt like I was given a chance right then... you're alive for a reason... that [fall] could've killed me, but I felt like from that moment on, I was trying to stay positive.

"And, you know when you're here, you're still alive for a reason. So, all you got to do now is swim and survive. I was hoping they will start looking for me, they will find me eventually."

Grimes landed in shark infested waters after falling from the cruise ship. (Good Morning America)

Grimes' family did not realize he was missing for 12 hours after he was last seen.

But when they realized he was gone, they immediately alerted the cruise staff who then notified the US Coast Guard.

Incredibly, Grimes was found 20 hours after he fell off the ship and was reunited with his nearest and dearest.

In a statement shared with ABC News, the Coast Guard said : "We greatly appreciate the efforts of all, most especially the US Coast Guard and the mariner who spotted the guest in the water.

"Cruise ships have safety barriers in all public areas that are regulated by US Coast Guard standards that prevent a guest from falling off. Guests should never ever climb up on the rails."

The US Coast Guard somehow managed to spot him. (Good Morning America)

To deal with hunger, Grimes resorted to what he could find while treading water for all that time. I mean, he couldn't really be picky.

It resulted in him consuming a floating stick he believed to be a bamboo.

Describing the moment he saw a helicopter come overhead to rescue him, Grimes explained: "The first thing I actually told (the rescuer) was, 'I don't have any clothes on,' because I stripped out of everything,' and he said 'that's fine'.

"I was just thinking, 'Thank you. You are like a guardian angel coming down for me.'"

Luxury yacht hit by tornado sinks off Palermo with 7 people missing including 4 Brits

A luxury yacht carrying 22 people has sunk off the coast of Sicily during a tornado with six people still missing and one body recovered by the wreck.

Technology tycoon Mike Lynch is missing along with three other Brits, a Canadian and two Americans alongside one crew member, a cook. An investigation is being carried out by the Port Authority, with the British flagged Bayesian found sunk half a mile from the coast.

Divers have recovered the body of a man, reported to be the cook, who was of Canadian origins but was a resident in Antigua. Emergency services have rescued 15 people, including a one-year-old British girl called Sophie, as coast guard patrols are continuing the desperate search for the others who were on board the vessel that got into difficulty around 5am this morning off the village of Porticello, near Palermo.

It is understood that the boat sank during bad weather as a tornado hit Sicily and it was last tracked six hours ago off the coast. Divers have already reached the hull, 49 meters deep.

Are you in Sicily and have you seen the rescue operation? Let us know at [email protected]

The Italian fire service wrote at 10am local time on X: "#Palermo , shipwreck of vessel off the coast of Porticello, 15 people rescued, 7 reported missing: from dawn, divers from the #vigilidelfuoco engaged in the search. Wreck identified at 50 meters depth, speleo divers arriving."

It later stated 90 minutes later: "#Palermo , shipwreck of a vessel in Porticello: the lifeless body of a man was recovered by the #divers of the #vigilidelfuoco outside the wreck. The search operations continue with the coordination at sea of the @guardiacostiera."

On board there were mostly British passengers, but also a New Zealander, a Sri Lankan citizen, two Anglo-French and an Irishman. A helicopter is also looking for the vessel while the survivors are being cared for locally including the one-year-old child who has been taken to the Children's Hospital in Palermo as a precaution along with his mum who has superficial injuries.

The mayor of Bagheria, Filippo Maria Tripoli, wrote on Facebook : "This morning off the coast of Santa Flavia a foreign boat sunk due to bad weather, 15 people recovered and seven missing. Already all the police forces and emergency services are operational, our Red Cross volunteers are present and the availability of other civil protection associations of the territory has been asked, alerted by the regional civil protection department."

The one-year-old British girl called Sophie was remarkably rescued from the waves by her mum Charlotte. "For two seconds I lost my baby in the sea, then I immediately hugged her again amid the fury of the waves. I held her tightly, close to me, while the sea was stormy. Many were screaming. Luckily the lifeboat inflated and 11 of us managed to get on board," said Charlotte, reported Giornale di Sicilia.

Sophie was taken to the Children's Hospital in Palermo as a precaution, along with her mum who has superficial injuries - she was given chest stitches for a slight graze.

Sophie’s father was taken to the Civic Hospital while a further five people were being helped at an emergency centre in Bagheria. "They are all in a good condition ," said the head of the emergencies at the paediatric hospital, Domenico Cipolla: "We managed to get the parents to talk on the phone, with doctors and nurses all emotional especially with the little girl fine, the outlook is fine and we are carrying out tests only as a precaution."

Some survivors have been taken to the Domina Zagarella hotel in Santa Flavia. "We are safe, we just arrived at the hotel. But we were very scared," reportedly said one person. The mayor of Santa Flavia, Giuseppe D'Agostino, and several local councillors also went to the hotel to see them. Others who were on the ship were taken to nearby Termini Imerese.

But there have also been tragic reports of divers seeing "corpses through the portholes" from Salvo Cocina, the head of the Civil Protection of Sicily, speaking to Corriere della Sera . The boat went down in poor sailing conditions and it is reported that the captain, who has been badly shaken by the incident, will be interviewed by police. The vessel was in the port of Porticello and witness have said it was at anchor when it capsized in the bad weather.

Witnesses have said the vessel was still at anchor in front of the port of Porticello when the tornado struck and the storm broke the large sail mast which is believed to have led the boat to capsize. Another boat, also with its anchor down, nearby reportedly came to the rescue. An eerie photo taken just a few hours before the disaster shows the Bayesian calmly docked in the port.

"That vessel was all lit up," says a man in Porticello. "At around 4:30 in the morning it was gone. A beautiful vessel where there had been a party. A normal holiday day spent happily at sea turned into a tragedy. The vessel was not far from the port. It would have taken very little to raise the anchor and head for the port. Evidently they were surprised by the storm that suddenly hit and they were unable to avoid the sinking."

The Coast Guard and firefighters are continuing the search while at the request of the Bagheria Carabinieri Station Command, several volunteer organizations are also providing assistance. Many people have taken to social media to question why the boat set sail despite the weather warnings.

One person wrote on Facebook: "My God, let's hope they find them," another said: "Hopefully they can all be found, God help the civil protection and the law enforcement who are trying to locate them." But a person also questioned: "What the hell was this boat doing to us in the middle of the sea in a storm, after all the warnings of the weather?"

Another Facebook user has shared a photo of the boat taken last night. They wrote: "Last picture I took at 10:00 pm. The yacht on the left sunk at 4:05, caught in the middle of the hurricane 300 meters from the port of Porticello, next to another sailboat that provided rescue. It looks like there are 22 on board but unfortunately 7 missing, feared to be still in the hull. Unbelievable tragedy tonight. I'm out of words."

The Bayesian is an elegant 56-meter sailing boat with a gross tonnage of 473 tons, built by the Perini Navi Viareggio shipyard in February 2008, refitted in 2020, and designed for luxury travel. According to Vessel Finder, the boat arrived in Porticello after a stop in Milazzo and a passage in front of Cefalù.

A local fisherman has told how he saw the ship go down. "I was at home when the tornado hit. I immediately closed all the windows. Then I saw the boat, it had only one mast, it was very large. I saw it sink suddenly," said Pietro Asciutto, a fisherman from Porticello. "I think the tornado came from Porticello, shortly after I went down to the Bay of Santa Nicolicchia to get a better look at what was happening. The boat was still floating, then suddenly it disappeared. I saw it sink with my own eyes."

The Foreign Office told The Mirror : “We are in contact with the local authorities following an incident in Sicily, and stand ready to provide consular support to British nationals affected.”

Brit cruise passenger 'falls overboard' and reported missing in Adriatic Sea

A frantic search has been launched after a Brit reportedly fell overboard on a cruise ship in the Adriatic Sea. Croatian authorities said "a young Brit" from the Royal Caribbean's Explorer of the Seas ship went missing in the early hours on Friday, August 9 - and hasn't been seen since, reports the Mirror.

One passenger , Nicole Bullock, who was travelling on the cruise ship, said she woke up to an emergency message blaring through the vessel. She wrote on X: "Woken up on the cruise ship around 3.40am to the emergency message 'Oscar Oscar Oscar off the port side'. Man overboard. Been watching the rescue efforts off my balcony all day, hoping for a positive outcome."

It remains unclear if the missing tourist is a man or a woman. It is thought that the Royal Caribbean's Explorer of the Seas is on a seven day Greece-Croatia route, and the journey started six days ago on Saturday August 3.

An urgent search and rescue mission is still being carried out near the r emote island of Jabuka , it is said. A British woman spent 10 hours in the water after plunging overboard - also in the Adriatic Sea - in 2018. Kay Longstaff, 46, was travelling on the Norwegian Star when disaster struck.

The air hostess is alleged to have argued with her partner in the days before she plunged overboard and is said to have been having a "tough time" on board the cruise.

She claimed she fell from the seventh deck of the 294m liner, before spending 10 hours floating in the Adriatic Sea off Croatia until she was eventually plucked from the waters by the coast guard.

However, other tourists insisted it would have been “impossible” to accidentally slip over the chest-high railings surrounding the decks.

American Eddie Palladino, 60, who was on the cruise with his wife and two children, said: “We were woken up by alarm bells going off and then there was an announcement from the captain.

He said: ‘I’m calling to alert you now that we have a reported jumper off the ship and we’re now in a search and rescue mission.’"

The Royal Caribbean and the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office has been approached for comment.

WEATHER ALERT

A warning and 2 advisories in effect for 3 regions in the area

Police to unveil new details in case of missing teen last seen leaving detroit bus in january, police submitted warrant request to wayne county prosecutor’s office thursday.

Jacqueline Francis , Reporter

DETROIT – Charges may soon come in the case of missing Detroit 13-year-old Na’Ziyah Harris.

“We are prepared very soon to make an announcement on this case,” Detroit police Chief James White said Thursday during a Board of Police Commissioners meeting.

Detroit police Commissioner Tamara Smith asked White for an update during the meeting, citing a resurgence of interest and false information circulating on social media.

“It is not going to be the desired outcome that any of us want,” White said during the meeting. “And I have to stop there as Madame Prosecutor is going to probably start ringing my phone here in a minute.”

Police submitted a warrant request to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office on Thursday (Aug. 15).

Progress in the investigation comes weeks after the passing of Harris’ father.

Smith, who is a family friend, said Harris’ father died in July of heart failure.

“He was already sick, but this took him over the edge,” Smith said. “With all the might in his body he was out every day searching, looking to bring awareness and do everything he could to bring his baby home.”

Meanwhile, a flurry of rumors has been circulating online, leading some community members to conduct unauthorized searches.

“I would not say you should be going in vacant houses and trespassing and making things worse because you don’t want to compromise the integrity of the case,” Smith said.

Police said Harris, a 13-year-old student at J. E. Clark Preparatory Academy in Detroit, was last seen on Jan. 9, 2024 .

She got off a school bus at Cornwall Street and 3 Mile Drive, near Warren Avenue and Outer Drive on Detroit’s east side.

Police have executed several searches, but she’s never been found.

‘It’s Obnoxious’: Video Shows Woman Tossing Couple’s Speaker Off Cruise Ship As They Blast Music Onboard. Some Say She Took It Too Far

A video that has drawn millions of views on social media shows a woman taking someone else’s portable speaker playing loud music and chucking it off a cruiseliner into the ocean.

The brief 30-second clip shows a woman on a cruise ship with a Greek flag approaching a couple seated at a table on the ship’s deck, snatching their music speaker off their table, and hurling it overboard and into the ocean.

It’s unclear what escalated the situation to that point, but the woman appeared to be frustrated by the speaker’s loud music.

youtube missing cruise ship

The woman is seen walking away after sending the speaker flying, while another woman who appears to be the speaker’s owner looks completely dumbfounded by what happened.

She stands and starts yelling at the woman who walked off while her male companion is still calmly seated.

The video ends after the woman at the table is seen gathering her belongings.

The clip drew mixed reactions from numerous viewers on Reddit. Most people sided with the woman who launched the speaker off the ship, noting that public spaces aren’t the places to play personal music.

“Inconsiderate people playing music on speakers in shared, or public spaces deserve to meet people who like throwing speakers,” one Reddit user commented.

“This ain’t a concert. Some of us don’t want to listen to your favorite music. The sound of perpetual rolling waves is the most tranquil noise there is. Anything else is noise pollution,” another person said.

Others thought the woman’s actions went overboard and were a tad excessive.

“Not cool to blast music in a shared environment,” someone commented. “Not cool to chuck it in the ocean either the fishies shouldn’t be subjected to her awful music either.”

“I think it’s obnoxious when people blast their music in public too, but I’m also not gonna yeet their speaker,” another comment said.
