The Harbor House Pier 21 is located on the waterside, close to the Port of Galveston adjacent to the Historic Strand district. Most bedrooms offer stunning harbor views while the Strand Historic District is just a short walk away. The hotel provides a continental breakfast and guests can use the swimming, spa, and dining facilities at its nearby sister hotel, the Hotel Galvez.

As the Harbor House Pier 21 is located only 0.5 miles from the port’s entry you can easily walk from the hotel to the cruise terminal. If you choose to leave your car at the Harbor House while on cruise, the cost is $15/night. A shuttle to the Cruise terminal is available upon request.

2. The George Manor ★★★★ (Bed & Breakfast)

This historic house from the 19th century is ideal located in the center of the Galveston’s historic district, close to The Strand with its restaurants, bars and antique stores. Guests staying at this bed and breakfast enjoy transportation to and from the cruise terminal ($25 for 2 and $12.50 per extra person). Walking distance to either cruise ship terminal 1 or 2 is approx. 20 minutes. The George Manor also provides transportation to and from both Houston Airports. 

For those willing to leave their vehicle while on cruise vacation the property offers safe secure long-term parking for $150 per week which includes a private shuttle (Black Suburban) to and from the Port.

3. The Tremont House, Galveston, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel ★★★★ (Walking Distance)

The Tremont House Hotel is just a pleasant stroll away from the Strand Historic District and Galveston Beach. Guests can enjoy dining and cocktails in the rooftop restaurant of the Tremont House as well as using the swimming pool and spa of the nearby Hotel Galvez.

Tremont House has cruise parking available at a reasonable cost which includes one night of hotel valet and up to 1 week of cruise parking but only when the Park & Sail package is booked. There is a shuttle service to the port but only for guests who booked this package. The property is only 5 minutes’ walk from the Galveston Cruise Terminal ( Carnival ). Royal Caribbean ‘s new cruise terminal is a bit further away, 25 minutes walk. The best way to get there is by taxi or Uber/Lyft.

4. Hilton Galveston Island Resort ★★★★

The Hilton Galveston Island Resort is just a few steps from the beach, making it the ideal place for adding a few extra days to your cruise vacation. There are a swim-up bar and grill at the center of the hotel’s outdoor heated swimming pool.

The Hilton Galveston Island Resort offers cruise parking and a transfer to port for a fee . There’s also a free shuttle service* to and from the port, but only if you book the park and go package. Parking for extra nights is charged for. It is best to book your transportation when you reserve your hotel room.

5. Avenue O Bed and Breakfast ★★★ (Free Shuttle)

The Avenue O Bed and Breakfast is located in the historic Silk Stocking District, approx. 10 minutes walk from Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier and 1.2 miles from cruise terminal 1 and 2. Royal Caribbean’s International cruise terminal is about 1.7 miles from the property. A trolley that goes down 25th Street (a block down) will take you to the beach, Moody Gardens, or the downtown area.

Guests staying here can enjoy a complimentary port transfer and parking for cruisers (free cruise parking only if you book directly with hotel). Plus, free breakfast. A minimum two-night stay is required for parking longer than 7 days and on weekends.

If you’re leaving on a cruise from Galveston, the port is a short drive away (2 miles or 6-8 minutes).

This is one of the most booked affordable beachfront hotels offering three-star accommodation. You can admire the magnificent views of the sea and enjoy relaxing in the large pool and garden. The hotel doesn’t offer transportation to the cruise port, but with a permit, you can leave your car at the hotel while on your cruise.

With delightful tropical surroundings, the Moody Gardens Hotel is right next door to the Schlitterbahn Waterpark. Guests can choose from several on-site dining options or simply relax in the outdoor pools or spa.

The Moody Gardens Hotel has a Cruise Transportation Package . Enjoy a luxurious room for one night and free parking with a valet service for the entire length of your cruise. Shuttle to the port is not included in the package but the hotel can recommend some companies.

7. Baymont by Wyndham Galveston ★★★ (Affordable)

The bold looking hotel offers exquisite rooms for your comfort. If you love spending time at the beach it is a great place for this. Enjoy the waters within the calm, serene and nature filled environment the hotel offers. You can enjoy the views, and early morning walks to the beach, or evening strolls as the sun sets.

It is close to Galveston cruise port, which gives it an additional plus. Unfortunately they discontinued free cruise parking at the beginning of 2022.

8. Comfort Suites Galveston ★★

This unusual property features a small tower and an arched entrance to the lobby that has wrought iron balustrades lining the wide staircase. Guest rooms are large and modern with a bright decor and wooden paneling.

You can relax in the pool or visit the beach, which is two minutes away. The hotel operates a paid shuttle to the cruise port at Galveston, although kindergarten children go free. There’s also parking available while being on your cruise for a small fee. Free hot breakfast is offered to guests.

9. Motel 6 Galveston, TX Seawall ★★★ (Cruise Parking)

In the pleasant breakfast room you’ll find a cheerful decor while outside there’s a picnic area and pool. There’s parking during your cruise which costs $10.00/day, but you’ll have to take a cab or Uber to the cruise port.

10. Howard Johnson by Wyndham Galveston ★★

Like many Galveston properties, this attractive budget hotel is two storys high with covered, wrought iron balconies. There’s a relaxed atmosphere in the compact, simply furnished rooms, while the communal lounges and dining areas are spacious and informal with comfortable seating.

Outside, you’ll find wooden benches and barbecue facilities on the terrace. You can park for free while taking your cruise (based on availability) and their is a shuttle service directly across the street. The port is four miles away.

11. Super 8 by Wyndham Galveston ★★

This charming inexpensive two-story hotel features balconies and an arched porch. You’ll find the comfortable guest rooms have a stylish, modern decor with bright colors and minimalist furnishings. The breakfast room has plenty of seating and there’s space to relax outdoors in the garden area alongside the pool.

The cruise port is five miles away and although there isn’t a shuttle service. As of March 2022, the property no longer offers free parking for cruises.

12. Grand Galvez ★★★★

The Hotel Galvez is housed in one of the island’s grandest most historic houses and is a pleasing blend of old-world elegance and modern amenities. Guests can dive into a saline pool with a swim-up bar, and a spa as well as a restaurant well known for its delicious seafood menu.

The hotel offers cruise parking at a reasonable cost. There is a complimentary shuttle service to the cruise port for all guests, whether they are using the parking facilities or not. Shuttle reservations should be made at the valet staff when checking in to the hotel.

Interstate 10, Highway 146, and Interstate 45 link Galveston to mainland Texas and there is ample parking at the port with a guaranteed place for every cruise passenger who requires it.

The Port of Galveston is 45-minutes from Houston Hobby Airport and 75-minutes from Houston Intercontinental Airport .

I am looking for a hotel that will pick me up from hobby the day before then 1 night stay in Galveston , transport me to the cruise and even return me to hobby when cruise is over . any suggestions will be a big help . I fly in the last sat n of march 2018 to embark on the liberty that sunday. thanks for any help you can give

That's a 40-mile trip one way. From Hobby to Galveston.

Unless you're staying in the penthouse on top of the San Luis Hotel. I can't imagine any hotel in Galveston, going to pick you up, that far away, and bring you back to town. I think Uber will be the way to go for you.

You can try contacting the Country Inn and Suites. It's been awhile since I stayed there for a cruise (2014), but they had a shuttle from the airport to the hotel in Galveston and a shuttle from the hotel to the pier. There was also a free breakfast. The shuttles were for a fee.

If you find a hotel that doesn't off a shuttle from the airport to the hotel, you can use Uber or a shuttle service. I've used Galvestonlimo for a shuttle from the hotel to the pier and they were great.

Didn't see you stated a new thread on this. I replied in the other thread. La Quinta by Hobby does this, but it's not Galveston.

Good choice. With Uber now being an option, we're planning to stay at Drury Inn by Hobby and Uber to Galveston and back. Better to do everything on our own schedule rather than waiting around for a shuttle.

I am also cruising that weekend but on the Breeze. Did you find airfare to be extremely high heading home on Sunday the 8th? I'm still waiting for Southwest to release their options for that day but so far we are looking at almost $600 round trip per person which is more than we paid for the cruise!

For what it's worth, we booked a hotel near Webster (about $100/night) and are staying overnight there and taking an Uber in the morning to the ship.

I am also cruising that weekend but on the Breeze. Did you find airfare to be extremely high heading home on Sunday the 8th? galveston snooze and cruise help please

I am looking for a hotel that will pick me up from hobby the day before then 1 night stay in Galveston , transport me to the cruise and even return me to hobby when cruise is over . any suggestions will be a big help . I fly in the last sat n of march 2018 to embark on the liberty that sunday. thanks for any help you can give

That's a 40-mile trip one way. From Hobby to Galveston.

Which Airport Should You Fly Into For Your Galveston Cruise?

While no one would mistake Galveston with Miami, the truth is that it has quickly grown into the busiest cruise port outside of Florida.

Carnival, Disney, and Royal Caribbean have sailed from the island for years, with Royal Caribbean now homeporting one of its largest Oasis-class ships at the Texas port. Meanwhile, other lines including Norwegian and Princess are also bringing their ships to the port. And a new terminal for MSC is in the works.

For tens of millions of Texans, the port is within a few hours drive. But as Galveston grows as a port, it’s only natural that more people fly in for their cruise.

The only real complaint about cruising from Galveston is that getting to the cruise terminal can more difficult if you need to fly in for your cruise. Unlike cities like Miami or Fort Lauderdale — which have airports just minutes from the cruise port — Galveston is a considerable distance from the closest major airport.

For most people, the option is to fly into one of Houston’s two airports. The city is served by Houston Hobby (HOU) and Bush-Intercontinental (IAH). That makes it even more confusing for cruisers who aren’t familiar with the area or the airports to decide which one they should fly into.

To help out those passengers trying to decide which airport is better for their trip, we have all the details about both as it relates to cruising from Galveston.

(Note: Galveston does have a small local airport  minutes from the cruise ships. However, it does not offer regular commercial service at this time. If you are a pilot or want to charter a flight, however, it could be an option.)

Airport Distances from the Port of Galveston

Both Houston Hobby and Intercontinental are located far from the port. Houston Hobby is considerably closer, sitting on the southeast side of Houston, compared to Intercontinental’s location due north of the city. In total, you should allot between 45 minutes (Hobby) to an hour and 15 minutes (Intercontinental), at the very least.

One thing to keep in mind is that Houston is notorious for its traffic (even at odd hours) thanks to road construction. That’s why we suggest allowing up to double the “non-traffic” time just to give yourself plenty of time to get to the ship.

Given the distance, we would always suggest flying into Houston the day before you sail. If your flight arrives early enough on the morning of your cruise (typically before noon), you should have enough time to make it to the port. However, any delays could add unneeded stress.

Airline Service for Houston Airports

There is no doubt that Houston Hobby’s location makes it much more convenient for passengers headed to Galveston. Unfortunately, Hobby is considerably smaller in terms of airlines servicing the airport when compared to Intercontinental.

Houston Hobby is primarily a Southwest destination. The airline dominates service from the airport. However, there are occasional flights from Delta, American Airlines, Frontier, and Allegiant.

Houston Intercontinental is the city’s largest airport and also offers the most flight service. Here you’ll find nearly every airline available, including Southwest. If you are flying from an international destination, you will likely have no choice but to fly into this airport. In addition, IAH is a United hub, which serves airports around the country and the world.

Transportation Options to Galveston From Airports

Both airports will offer similar service for transportation, including taxis, cruise line shuttles, car rentals, and independent shuttles to the Port of Galveston .

The major difference is getting from Intercontinental to the cruise ships takes considerably more time and money than compared to Houston Hobby .

For example, the official Carnival shuttle between IAH and the cruise port runs $116 per person round trip, compared to $82 from Houston Hobby. Expect similar prices from the other cruise lines. Other services, including taxis will see an even larger price jump between the two airports.

Many people choose to use a rideshare service like Uber or Lyft or independent shuttles as they are the cheapest options available. Either way, expect to spend at least $100 for roundtrip transportation to Galveston for a couple taking a cruise. Read more about transportation to Galveston here .

Which Houston Airport Is More Convenient to Galveston?

While we live in the area, if we had to fly in for a cruise, then we’d pick Houston Hobby 10 times out of 10 . The shorter distance between Hobby and the cruise port makes the airport much more convenient to get to the cruise ship. Also, we like that Hobby is a much smaller airport in general, making it easier to get in and out.

The only hang-up is that Bush-Intercontinental features many more flights. That means cruisers flying to sail from Galveston might find a cheaper flight into Intercontinental or one that better meets their schedule.

For us, we would have to save more than $75 per person on a round trip flight to make the extra distance and cost of getting to the port worth our while . That said, it’s smart to search for flights into both, just to make sure you’re getting the best price and time for your trip.
