Can I Bring Alcohol on my Cruise? Drink Policies for Every Cruise Line

Can you bring alcohol on your cruise? The answer is likely yes, but with lots of fine print .

One of the reasons cruises offer such great value is because the cruise line wants to get passengers on board. Once they are a “captive audience,” then the cruise lines can offer to sell them all sorts of things — from excursions to souvenirs to alcohol.

And have now doubt, selling drinks is a big business for the ships.

Glasses of wine

With literally thousands of people ready to let loose in the warm sun, the booze flows like water. It’s not an accident that a cruise ship can easily have a dozen bars… and several other restaurants to grab a drink.

It shouldn’t be a surprise, then, that nearly every cruise line prohibits your bringing beer or liquor aboard the ship to drink. After all, it’s in their interest to sell you a tasty drink instead of you bringing your own. However, many lines will let you bring some wine or champagne  when you board the ship.

It likely won’t quench your thirst for the entire cruise, but it’s good to know that if you want to save a few bucks, then you can bring at least some alcohol aboard on your own.

To help you sort out what you can and can’t bring, we’ve gone through the trouble of rounding up each cruise line’s alcohol policy.

In This Article...

Carnival Alcohol Policy

One of the most popular cruise lines in the world, Carnival’s alcohol policy is in line with what you usually find on mass-market lines.

Carnival allows you to bring on one 750 ml bottle of wine or champagne, per adult 21 years or older. The bottle must be sealed and unopened. All other alcohol — including beer and spirits — are not allowed and will be confiscated.

A corkage fee of $15 applies for each bottle if you decide to drink it in the dining room, bar, or another restaurant. There’s no fee for drinking it in your cabin.

Alcohol Allowed: One bottle of wine/champagne for each adult on embarkation day. Source

Celebrity Cruises Alcohol Policy

Like most cruise lines, things like beer and liquor are not allowed to be brought with you on embarkation day. Celebrity says plainly that “Guests are not permitted to bring alcoholic beverages onboard.”

There is an exception for wine (champagne is not specifically mentioned, but is usually lumped in with wine). Celebrity allows passengers to bring two bottles of wine for each passenger, but there is a corkage fee if they are consumed in a public area (unless you have a drink package). There is no size limit on the bottles mentioned, but it’s safe to assume the limit is a standard 750 ml size.

Alcohol Allowed: Two bottles of wine per stateroom on embarkation day. Source

Cunard Alcohol Policy

Cunard is known for its stately cruise ships, including the Queen Elizabeth and the Queen Mary 2. The high-end cruise line follows the lead of many other cruise lines in that most alcohol is not allowed to be brought and consumed on the ship.

The lone exception is that the cruise line does allow one bottle of wine or champagne per adult. You can drink this in your room, but if you want to have it in a public area, there is a $20 corkage fee.

Disney Cruises Alcohol Policy

On a Disney cruise, alcohol isn’t quite as “front and center” as you might find on other mass-market cruise lines. On the other hand, the cruise line is a bit more liberal with what you can bring onboard with you.

According to the website:

“Disney Cruise Line Guests 21 years and older may bring a maximum of 2 bottles of unopened wine or champagne (no larger than 750 ml) or 6 beers (no larger than 12 ounces) on board at the beginning of the voyage and at each port of call. These beverages must be packed in carry-on (not checked) bags or luggage.”

There is a $26 corkage fee for drinking your wine in the dining room. All drinks must be sealed and unopened. If not, they will be taken from your luggage. Apart from the small quantity of beer and wine, no other alcohol is allowed to brought onboard to drink during your cruise.

Alcohol Allowed: Two bottles of wine/champagne or six beers per adult at embarkation. Source

Holland America Alcohol Policy

Holland America, like other lines, has a restrictive policy regarding bringing alcohol on the ship.

First, beer and liquor are not allowed to be brought aboard when you embark to drink on the ship.

That said, you can bring on wine or champagne. Holland America allows all guests 21 and older to bring on bottles (up to 750 ml) to drink on the ship. However, what you bring is hit with an $20 corkage fee. Note that there is no specific limit on the number of bottles you can bring, but we’d suggest keeping it at one bottle per adult.

Alcohol Allowed: Wine or champagne are allowed. Limits aren’t mentioned, but assume one bottle per adult. Bottles are subject to $20 corkage fee. Source

MSC Alcohol Policy

According to the “Conditions of Carriage” on MSC’s website, “Alcoholic drinks, including wines, spirits, beer or other liqueurs are available for purchase onboard the Vessel at fixed prices. Passengers are not permitted to bring onboard any such drinks for use during the voyage, whether for consumption in their own cabins or otherwise.”

That seems to include all alcohol, including beer, wine, and liquor. If there is a silver lining, MSC is known for having some of the least expensive drink prices and packages of any cruise line. Drinks start at around $6.

Alcohol Allowed: Guests cannot bring on alcohol on their cruise. Source

Norwegian Cruise Line Alcohol Policy

Norwegian Cruise Line does not allow passengers to bring on most forms of alcohol, including beer and liquor.

NCL does allow passengers to bring on wine or champagne as long as it is in a fully sealed bottle. What’s nice is that Norwegian simply says that “Guests may bring bottles of wine and champagne on board.” There is no limit mentioned to the number of bottles listed per stateroom or per passenger.

What’s not so nice is that the cruise line says a corkage fee is charged for each bottle, no matter if it is consumed in public areas of the ship or in your stateroom. The charge is $15 for a 750 ml bottle and $30 for a 1,500 ml (magnum) bottle.  Even at those prices, however, bringing your own bottle would be cheaper than drinking wine/champagne from the bar.

Alcohol Allowed: Wine and/or champagne are allowed (no limit mentioned). A corkage fee applies even if drinking in the stateroom. Source

Oceania Alcohol Policy

Want to bring 60 bottles of wine? Oceania actually lets you do that… in some cases.

Here are the basics: Beer or hard liquor cannot be brought onboard. However, for any Oceania cruise, guests can bring up to six bottles of wine per cabin. If you are fortunate enough to be on a handful of around-the-world cruises (most lasting around 160-200 days), then you are allowed to bring up to 60 bottles per cabin.

This wine is free to drink if you keep it in the cabin. If consumed in a public area, it will be hit with a $25 corkage fee.

Alcohol Allowed:  Six bottles of wine per cabin. Specific world cruises can bring up to 60 bottles per cabin. Source

Princess Cruises Alcohol Policy

Princess fits in with the most standard alcohol policies. Wine and champagne are allowed, but any other alcoholic drink, including beer or spirits, isn’t allowed to be brought aboard on embarkation.

If you bring wine/champagne, you are allowed one bottle per adult of drinking age. The bottle must be 750 ml or smaller. Magnum bottles aren’t allowed.

You can drink the wine in your cabin for no charge, but if you drink them in a public place, a $15 corkage fee is charged.

You can bring additional bottles of wine or champagne with you, but anything over the one allotted for each passenger will see a $15 corkage fee, no matter where it is consumed.

Alcohol Allowed: One bottle of wine/champagne per adult. Additional bottles are allowed but charged a $15 fee. Source

Royal Caribbean Alcohol Policy

Along with Carnival, Royal Caribbean is among the most popular cruise lines in North America.

The mega-line does allow passengers to bring one bottle (750 ml) of wine or champagne per adult. There is no corkage fee on the wine if you drink it in your stateroom.

Other alcohol like beer and liquor are not allowed to be brought with you on embarkation day.

Alcohol Allowed: One bottle of wine or champagne per adult. Source

Virgin Voyages Alcohol Policy

Virgin Voyages is known for being an adults-only cruise line that started sailing in 2021. The cruise line has a different way of doing many things, but when it comes to alcohol, the policy is the same as most other major carriers.

First, liquor and beer are not allowed to be brought on the ship to enjoy during the cruise (but you can buy them in port and have the staff hold them until the end of the trip).

Wine is allowed to be brought on the ship. Virgin says you can bring two regular-sized (750 ml) bottles per cabin. No word on champagne, but it should be fine. There are also no corkage fees mentioned, saving you some money.

Alcohol Allowed: Two bottles of wine per stateroom. Source

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a corkage fee and how can I avoid it? Corkage fees are charges applied to alcohol you bring on the ship and consume in public areas. So if you bring on a bottle of wine and drink it in a dining room, the fee will apply.

Most of the time this fee doesn’t apply to alcohol consumed in the cabin. So if you want to avoid the charge, you can simply enjoy your drink in the room. One thing to note is that it’s doubtful that anyone would give you bother if you were to put a drink into a glass and then walk around the ship with it.

What if I bring on alcohol from a port? One popular thing that many people do is buy alcohol in port. Often you can find these in duty-free stores, or find drinks you wouldn’t get back home or at cheaper prices. But don’t think you’ll be able to drink these back on the ship.

Instead, when you board with bottles bought in port (no matter is it’s wine, beers, liquor, or anything else), they will be held by the cruise line until the end of the trip and returned to you the last night of the cruise.

What happens if I board with alcohol that’s not allowed? Bring beer when you’re not allowed? Maybe you brought too many bottles of wine? If this is the case, then it’s up to the cruise line how they want to handle it. Some will simply hang onto the excess alcohol and return it at the end of the cruise. Others may confiscate the alcohol and destroy it. Either way, it’s best just to follow the rules so you don’t have to worry about what happens if it is found.

Holland America alcohol policy and wine prices – find out the answer to the "can I bring alcohol on board HAL cruise ships" question. Holland America Line had stated it would change its long-standing alcohol rules of allowing passengers to bring onboard unlimited bottles of wine. The new wine policy implementation date was Jan 31, 2014. Below you will find the official HAL information and find out if the changes have come true.

Holland America alcohol policy

Holland America policy of allowing unlimited soda or bottled water has not yet changed and is still allowed. But can I bring liquor on HAL cruises after all?

  • Bringing liquor onboard Holland America vessels at embarkation is not allowed. At voyage's beginning travelers who are 21 years and older can bring on board one bottle of champagne or wine (up to 750ml) in carry-on luggage - if consumed in the cabin, it won't be subject to a corkage fee. Passengers aren't allowed to bring boxed wine, beer, or other spirits and liquors.
  • Additional champagne and/or wine in carry-on luggage (no larger than 750ml) are welcome, but incur US$18.00 corkage fee each (subject to change), irrespective of where the bottles are consumed.
  • HAL reserves its right to remove alcoholic beverages from passengers' luggage which violates alcohol policy. All found alcoholic beverages will be removed, then returned on voyage's last evening - passengers won't receive monetary compensation.
  • Alcoholic beverages (except for champagne and wine), that have been purchased from onboard shops or brought on ship otherwise can't be consumed on ship. Alcoholic beverages (bottles and other containers) purchased in call ports or from onboard shops will be collected, stored for safekeeping, and then returned - delivered to guests' staterooms on the last evening of the voyage.
  • HAL cruisers can bring onboard champagne and/or wine that has been purchased in port. It's allowed bringing champagne or wine onboard, but a corkage fee ($18) is applied irrespective of where the bottles are consumed. Alternatively, passengers can choose to have the champagne and/or wine stored and returned at no charge on the last evening of the sailing.
  • Holland America Line had stated that from the 31st of January, 2014 passengers were limited to only one bottle per person, per sailing only during embarkation. A new corkage fee for opening a bottle in HAL bars or restaurants of $20 was discussed. Less than six months after announcing the new policy, HAL backtracked on this decision and bowed to pressure from travelers to permit unlimited bottles of champagne and/or wine to be brought on board for a per-bottle corkage fee.
  • HAL had been one of the most permissive cruise lines for guests who want to bring onboard their own bottles of wine before changing its alcohol policy.

Holland America drinking age on cruise ships

Holland America drinking age as on most major lines is 21 - for all HAL ships, destinations, liquor. Passengers under 21 years old have to be accompanied by a guardian, parent, or chaperone who is at least 25 years old - one chaperone required for every 5 passengers under 21. Alcoholic beverages on HAL ships will not be served to travelers under age 21.

Purchasing liquor from HAL cruise ships’ duty-free shops and ashore

These will be retained until your voyage's last day. Alcoholic beverages purchased in call ports or from shops onboard will be stored and afterward returned on vacation's last evening.

Beer list onboard Holland America ships

  • Draught: Served only on special occasions, accompanied by local specialties. Alaska Amber, for example, is served in Alaska on certain nights; German Rostock Beer is served on Baltic cruises during Bierfest, etc.
  • Bottled: Heineken and Budweiser.

Specialty bars on HAL ships

HAL newest venue featuring 3 themed bars is the Mix (on Veendam, Ryndam, Statendam, Rotterdam, Maasdam). The "Champagne" provides twenty different sparkling wine and champagne from around the world, purchased by the bottle or by the flute. The "Martinis" serves 19 Grey Goose cocktails and martinis, and the "Spirits & Ales" specializes in whiskey, brandy, and beer.

Holland America drink packages, prepaid beverage cards

  • Holland America offers several beverage pre-paid cards. If you purchase one of them for $45, you will receive beverage purchases that cost $50 toward it. Or pay $90 - receive beverage purchases for $100. Such a discounted beverage card offers an opportunity for savings on a variety of beverages from non-alcoholic beverages, espresso, and soda, to beer, wine, and spirits. For example, if you purchase a pre-paid fountain soda card for $25, you will receive $50 toward fountain soda purchases.
  • You will be charged 15% for beverage service which will be added automatically to drinks purchases and deducted from value of the pre-paid card at time of purchase. HAL Pre-paid Beverage Cards cannot be used for daily drink specials or during happy hours.
  • Wine onboard HAL can be purchased in advance with pre-paid packages saving to 25% with a beverage service charge of 15% included. Two packages are offered - the Admiral (with prices from $136.00 to $310.00) and the Navigator (prices range from $103.00 to $230.00), both coming with 3, 5 or 7 bottles bundle.
  • Holland America offers the opportunity for passengers to purchase liquor or beer packages via room service (to consume in staterooms) for discounted prices. Another chance is to pre-purchase online - the package will be in your stateroom on the day of embarkation. An example of this is the Gin & Tonic package, including 3 cans of tonic water and a 1L bottler of Gin for $37.00. Others include Scotch and Soda, Rum and Coke, Corona 6-pack and Miller Lite Domestic 6-pack for $23.00, and so on.
  • Free offer! 4 and 5-star members of Mariner Society have free access to wine tasting complimentary sessions.

Bringing Alcohol on a Cruise – Rules for Beer, Wine, Liquor (and Water)!

Bringing Alcohol on a Cruise - Rules for Beer, Wine, Liquor (and Water)! 1

With the ever-increasing prices of beverages and beverage packages on cruises nowadays, a common question people have before embarking on a cruise is, “ Can I bring alcohol or other beverages on a the ship ?”

I’m one of those people , to be fair. After a recent cruise where the beverage package was over $120 per person PER DAY, and just a simple can of Coke was about $5.00, I started thinking about smuggling booze on the ship (bad idea), but that’s honestly how insane the pricing has become!

On a side note / rant, when the beverage package costs exceed the cost of the cruise, you know something is wrong with the world (or the cruise world) 🙁

Can you bring alcohol on a cruise (along with other drinks)?

It depends on each cruise line and its policies. Some allow for generous amounts of wine and beer (Viking) and some allow literally NOTHING for whatever reason (I’m looking at you MSC!)

Facebook groups, subreddits, and cruising forums are filled with misinformation. Couple that with every cruise line’s constantly changing rules, getting the right information is challenging.

So here, we are going to provide a clear answer to the alcohol and beverage policies of popular cruise lines before you embark.

Why some people want to carry their own alcohol and other beverages on a cruise

It’s not just alcohol, a lot of people have a preference for a certain soda or water brand that a ship might not have. Primarily, people want to bring their own wine, soda or water on a cruise for:

  • Cost saving: Cruise ships sell alcoholic beverages and soft drinks with a high margin. Thus, bringing your own beverages saves you from spending extra on overpriced drinks. It also lets you enjoy them intimately in your room.
  • Personal preference: For a cruise ship, it’s not possible to stock all types of alcoholic drinks and beverages. Therefore, if you desire a certain brand or a type of beverage, it may not be available onboard.
  • Celebrating special events: Some people book a cruise trip to celebrate special occasions, from wedding anniversaries to retirement parties. Bringing your favorite aged wine or imported champagne is a great idea to make the event more memorable.

Cruise Line Alcohol Policies & Guidelines

This is updated for 2024 – but the times are a changin’, ya’ll!

Be sure to confirm with each cruise line. We’ve conveniently linked to each cruise line policy page for your convenience (below the chart)

Detailed guidelines about the alcohol and beverage policies on most cruise lines.

Msc cruises alcohol policy-.

Can you bring your own alcohol on an MSC Cruise? Nope!

MSC Cruises stands out with having one of the most restrictive policies stating you cannot bring ANY beverages of ANY type on the ship. You can’t even bring a bottle of water or soda.

Royal Caribbean –

Royal Caribbean allows only 1 bottle of wine or champagne per individual of legal drinking age. It doesn’t allow other types of alcohol.

However, if you purchase alcoholic beverages at port, the cruise ship retains your bottles. It provides you a claim ticket to collect the bottles when your trip ends.

Some users have reported that they’ve purchased alcohol on port and carried it to their rooms without any issues.

Other than in your room, if you plan to enjoy your wine or champagne in the dining hall, restaurants, bars, deck, etc., you must pay a $15 corkage fee.

You can also carry 12 standard cans, bottles, or cartons of water and non-alcoholic beverages per stateroom.

Beverage Package: $56-105/day, depending on your cruise, stay, and destination

Disney Cruise Line

On a Disney Cruise ship, guests over 21 can bring 2 bottles of wine or champagne (up to 750ml each) or 6 beer cans (up to 12 ounces each).

You must pack these alcoholic beverages in the carry-on bag and not in the check-in luggage, which will result in delays.

If you wish to consume your drinks anywhere on the ship besides your stateroom, you’ll have to cough up a $26 corkage fee per bottle.

Unlike other cruise lines, Disney doesn’t offer all-inclusive or unlimited beverage packages. Rather, you’ll have to individually purchase wine and beer packages.

Beer packages start from $36 for a six-pack. On the other hand, the wine package ranges from $105 to $220 for classic wines and $155 to $330 for premium ones.

Norwegian Cruise Line

While most cruise lines restrict you to a couple of 750ml bottles of wine or champagne, Norwegian Cruise Line allows you to bring several bottles of wine or champagne in 1500ml quantities.

However, NCL charges a corkage fee regardless of where you consume your wine, even in your stateroom! But there is a caveat to this. Anyone with a beverage package will not have to pay a corkage fee ANYWHERE. This is unique to Norwegian Cruise Line.

No beverage package? You’ll have to pay $15 and $30 for 750ml and 1500ml bottles, respectively.

Apart from this, you cannot bring non-alcoholic beverages, including water, soda, energy drinks, and juices onboard. This seems a bit strange, but NCL says it’s to speed up screening of passenger baggage. Having to sort through a bunch of soda and water during check-in would take too long. In reality, I believe it’s because the basic drink package on Norwegian doesn’t include bottled water, so this is a way to push people into buying it onboard. (Cynical thinking, I know)

Beverage packages start at $109/day, while teens can consume unlimited soft drinks from $9.95/day.

Reference: Norwegian Cruise Line Alcohol Policy . See our NCL Beverage Package Guide

Princess Cruises

You can bring several 750ml bottles of wine or champagne onboard a Princess cruise ship. If consumed in your stateroom, only one bottle is free from corkage fees . A corkage fee of $20 is applicable on additional wine or champagne bottles, even in the stateroom.

Hard liquor, spirits, and beer aren’t allowed. Before embarking, your luggage will be scanned for alcohol, and anything outside the company’s ‘Alcohol policy’ will be discarded.

Beverage packages start at $65/day, while for premium alcohol, you’ll have to pay $85/day.

Celebrity Cruises

During embarkation, guests over legal drinking can carry only one bottle (750ml) of wine or champagne onboard. In addition, guests can also hand-carry non-alcoholic beverages.

If you’re planning to consume your wine in a restaurant, bar, or dining hall, a $25 corkage fee is applicable per bottle.

Apart from the wine or champagne bottle brought during embarkation day, bringing all types of hard alcohol are prohibited. If you purchase any alcohol while in port or in duty-free shops, you must hand them over to security. You can collect them on your final day.

Celebrity Cruises offers Classic and Premium Drink packages, priced at $89 and $109 per day .

Reference: Celebrity Cruises Alcohol Policy

Carnival Cruise Line

Except for one 750ml bottle of wine and champagne, you aren’t allowed to bring alcoholic beverages on a carnival cruise. A corkage fee of $15 is applicable for drinking anywhere on the cruise other than your stateroom.

For non-alcoholic beverages, the cruise line allows up to 12 bottles (up to 350ml each) of water, soda, juices, energy drinks, milk, etc., onboard. The beverages must be in cans or cartons, as glass or plastic bottles are strictly prohibited.

The CHEERS! beverage package starts at $59.95/day and includes all types of alcohol under $20 or less. Plus, you get a 25% discount on drinks over $20.

For kids and young adults, bottomless drink packages start from $6.95/day.

Cunard Line

Similar to Carnival Cruise Line (Cunard’s parent company), Cunard also prohibits all types of alcohol except one bottle of wine or champagne. However, you’ll have to cough up a higher corkage fee of $25 per bottle.

One 750ml wine or champagne bottle is allowed per person. In addition, if you purchase duty-free alcohol onboard, the cruise staff will deliver it to you during final disembarkation.

Here’s a short table of beverage package pricing depending on the cruise stay.

Holland America Line

Holland America Line is extremely generous and allows you to bring several bottles of wine or champagne (up to 750ml each). However, a corkage fee of $20 is applicable per bottle and is subject to change at any time.

Only one wine bottle is exempted from the corkage fee if you buy it from the cruise-sponsored visit to local wineries.

Suppose you’re planning to bring your own stock of water bottles. In that case, Holland America Line permits you to bring up to 6 liters of water. You can bring the water in cans or cartons with 6x 1L or 12x 500ml configuration.

Apart from this, soft drinks, energy drinks, and all types of non-alcoholic beverages are entirely prohibited.

You can choose between Signature ($54.95) and Elite ($59.99) beverage packages. Both packages include soft drinks, juices, water, coffee, spirits, cocktails and wines. Additionally, the Elite package grants you access to premium spirits, wines, and cocktails.

Reference: Holland America Alcohol Policy

Virgin Voyages

Per stateroom, Virgin Voyages allows two 750ml wine bottles. You can also bring 12 sealed cans or cartons of water, protein drinks, soft drinks, and non-alcoholic beer. Each bottle shouldn’t be bigger than 12 ounces. The bottles should be in your carry-on bag. Plastic and glass bottles are prohibited.

Unlike other cruise lines, Virgin Voyages doesn’t offer restrictive per-day beverage packages. Instead, the cruise line offers a ‘Bar Tab,’ where you prepay in $300 .

Not having a real beverage beverage package makes the choice to bring a couple of bottles of your favorite wine onboard easy. There’s no reason not to bring what you really enjoy.

Regent Cruises

On a Regent Cruise ship, you can bring an unlimited amount of wine or champagne bottles and no corkage fees.

In addition, you have unlimited access to water, soda, soft drinks, juices, and a premium list of spirits, beers, and wine.

Only the ultra-premium wines and liquor are available for purchase.

Reference: Alcohol Policy

Oceania Cruises

Oceania Cruises recently revised its alcohol policy. Hence, you can now bring up to 6 bottles of wine or champagne per stateroom instead of 3.

You can either bring your bottles during embarkation or purchase them on port. Any quantity above 6 bottles will be held till the trip ends.

For world cruises that last around 164-180 days, you can bring up to 60 bottles per stateroom. Although, you must notify the cruise line in advance.

A $25 corkage fee is applicable for consuming your personal wines in a dining hall or public area.

Beverage packages start at $39.95/day for the House Select+ package, whereas the Prestige package costs $69.95/day.

Viking Cruises

Viking Cruises has the most relaxed alcohol policy. Therefore, you can bring unlimited amounts of alcohol and beverages onboard during embarkation or purchase them from port or onboard stores. Plus, there’s no corkage fee.

This is mostly because you are entitled to complimentary wines, beers, and soft drinks during lunches and dinners. So the logic is, why bother bringing anything? I love this type of policy! “Bring what you want, if you want, but we have plenty to serve you, so why bother?” 🙂 – I’ll only bother if they don’t carry a certain specific brand of spirit or wine.

For unlimited beverages and alcohol, the cruise line also offers a Silver Spirits beverage package. Thus, for an additional $25/day/person, you can order premium wines (glass), cocktails, beers, and other drinks, each up to $18.

Things to know before taking alcohol, water, and soda on a cruise ship

Even though your favorite cruise line allows you to bring your own bottle of wine, beer, or soft drinks, you must know a few things beforehand.

  • No hard liquor: Cruise lines have strict policies against hard liquor except for a few luxury lines, including Viking Cruises.
  • Limited quantities: If a cruise line allows alcoholic beverages, you may only bring one bottle per person or two bottles per stateroom of your favorite wine or champagne. Plus, most cruise lines only allow up to 750ml bottles.
  • Corkage Fees: If you prefer to drink your bottle of wine on a cruise ship’s public deck, dining hall, or restaurant, you are subject to pay corkage fees. It varies between $18 to $30 per bottle, depending on the cruise line.
  • Beverage Packages: Cruise ships offer beverage packages for a limited or unlimited amount of drinks. The package ranges between $29-$150 per day (depending on the cruise line) and includes sodas, soft drinks, wine, beers, alcohol, and other drinks.
  • Passenger Age: All cruise ships departing from the USA have a drinking age limit of over 21. In international waters, passengers between 18 and 20 require a consent form from their parents. Cruise ships departing from Europe and Australia have a drinking age limit of over 18.

Wait! Why bring water? Aren’t Complimentary Drinks Available on a Cruise Ship?

Yes, a few complimentary alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks are offered throughout your stay on a cruise.

But bottled water is usually never included. So for a real water snob, having a specific brand of water may be important, just be sure to check the cruise line regulations, as many have begun to prohibit all non-alcoholic beverages from being brought onboard.

A few cruise lines also offer free water, soda, juices, and other non-alcoholic beverages. However, for unlimited supply, you’ll have to purchase a soft drinks package, which costs between $6 to $30, depending on the cruise line.

Can you Sneak alcohol on a Cruise Ship? 😈

On a Celebrity Cruise recently, the beverage package was over $120 per person PER DAY, and just a simple can of Coke was about $5.00 after all the fees. It’s embarrassing to admit as a 40-something adult that I started thinking about smuggling booze on the ship (bad idea), but that’s how crazy the pricing has become! Surely there are a lot of passengers put off by these prices and consider, even for a brief moment, sneaking something on the ship. In the end, it’s just not worth it. It doesn’t mean you can’t think about it though! 🙂

So, while you may find numerous videos and articles teaching you how to sneak alcohol on a cruise ship. However, a cruise line’s security team is well aware of these tactics.

As mentioned on Royal Caribbean’s FAQ page, the security team will likely inspect water bottles, soda bottles, mouthwash, luggage, and other items for alcohol.

So, suck it up, buttercup. If you want to drink on your cruise – get ready to pay!

Holland America Alcohol Policy: What to Know before You Go

Published by admin on.

If you’re setting sail on a Holland America cruise, here’s everything you need to know about their alcohol policy.

Adults may bring one bottle of wine or champagne only (no larger than 750ml) in carry-on luggage at the start of the voyage, which is complimentary if enjoyed in your stateroom.

Additional wine or champagne bottles are welcome in carry-on luggage or purchased in port, but will each incur an $18.00 corkage fee. Any other bottles will be stored by Holland America and returned upon disembarkation.

The age of an adult varies depending on location. For voyages departing from and returning to Australia, New Zealand, Europe, China, Hong Kong, Singapore, or Taiwan, an adult means 18 years and up. For voyages departing from and returning to Japan, an adult means 20 years and up. For all other destinations, including the United States, an adult means 21 years and up.

If you’d rather not bring your own, Holland America offers several drink packages including the Elite Beverage Package and Signature Beverage Package. Wine enthusiasts can enjoy the Cellar Master Package, including a choice of five wine bottles, a special winetasting experience, a Pinnacle Grill dinner, and a commemorative Holland America bottle of wine.

The ultimate guide to Holland America cruise ships and itineraries

Ashley Kosciolek

Of the "Big Eight" cruise lines, Holland America Line is the one that prides itself most heavily on legacy. Among the other industry players, which are relatively new in comparison, Holland America stands out because of its longevity, having begun passenger operations in 1873 to ferry passengers across the Atlantic between The Netherlands and New York City.

Ships in the Holland America fleet — formerly the Nederlandsche-Amerikaansche Stoomvaart Maatschappij (Dutch-American Steamship Company) — carried immigrants from Europe to North America at regular intervals. As such, the line often attracts older cruisers and genealogy buffs looking to experience sea travel much like their grandparents, great-grandparents and even great-great grandparents did (albeit with more modern comforts). And veterans who found themselves on Holland America ships used as military transport during World War II often sail on the line's modern vessels as a way to reminisce.

But that doesn't mean the ships are stuffy , boring or limited to an older demographic. In fact, HAL ships are more modern than ever, with some of the newest hardware featuring high-tech theater shows, extensive art collections and contemporary music that even members of Generation Z are likely to appreciate. It's common to see multigenerational family groups on Holland America voyages.

Tied to the cruise line's rich backstory is a focus on quality and upholding high standards of service. The line's ships generally offer excellent food, tastefully designed decor and an impressive variety of music as entertainment.

Holland America cruises are considered mainstream and mass market, but they're not bargain-basement sailings. They fall in line with brands like Celebrity Cruises and Princess Cruises, meaning you'll pay slightly more for them than a Carnival Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean or Norwegian Cruise Line cruise. But Holland America sailings aren't luxury. (The slightly higher price point also means you won't feel like you're in the middle of a never-ending frat party or a resort geared to families.)

Here's what you need to know to determine if Holland America Line is right for your next cruise.

3 things TPG loves about Holland America Line

  • Delicious food that's carefully prepared with a focus on sustainability
  • Abundant live music options to suit many tastes
  • Extensive itineraries, from Alaska sailings that include land stays to lengthy world voyages

What we could do without

  • The stereotype that Holland America is only for passengers of a certain age

The Holland America fleet

alcohol policy on holland america cruise line

With only 11 ships, the HAL fleet is on the small side when compared to the industry's biggest players, some of which have more than two dozen vessels. Holland America's ships are divided into four classes : R Class, Vista Class, Signature Class and Pinnacle Class.

From oldest to newest , the ships have gradually increased in size . However, the largest ones still accommodate fewer than half of the number of passengers carried by the world's largest ships — a nod to the fact that many of the line's most loyal customers prefer a more intimate experience.

There are only two R Class ships on the roster — Volendam and Zaandam, which are the line's two oldest and smallest vessels, each with room for about 1,400 passengers. Because R Class vessels are nearly 40% smaller than the line's largest ships, they offer fewer amenities, making them perfect for anyone whose focus is the destinations the ships visit rather than the onboard diversions. As such, these two vessels tend to sail to more far-flung locales, including world cruises.

Introduced between 2002 and 2006, the four ships — Zuiderdam, Oosterdam, Westerdam and Noordam — in Holland America's Vista Class are large enough for slightly more than 1,900 passengers at double occupancy. Like their smaller R Class fleetmates, they offer only two alternative restaurants (a steakhouse and an Italian eatery) in addition to complimentary buffet and main dining room venues.

Holland America's Signature Class, comprising Eurodam and Nieuw Amsterdam, represents the line's midsize offerings, with each vessel accommodating about 2,100 people. Like Pinnacle Class ships, those in this class are home to Pan-Asian restaurant Tamarind, in addition to the free options and for-fee Italian restaurant and steakhouse found on the line's smaller vessels.

But it was with Pinnacle Class ships that Holland America truly began to overhaul its offerings in terms of both dining and entertainment. Koningsdam, which debuted in 2016, brought with it the Grand Dutch Cafe (where you'll find the best grilled cheese at sea, along with delicious split pea soup) and Rudi's Sel de Mer, a seafood restaurant developed by chef and food artist Rudi Sodamin. It also boasts the Music Walk concept, a central thoroughfare that houses several performance spaces focusing on different genres of music.

While Rudi's and the Grand Dutch Cafe are only found on the line's Pinnacle Class ships (which hold 2,650 people and also include Nieuw Statendam and Rotterdam ), Music Walk has been rolled out on Signature Class and Vista Class ships also, with R Class vessels featuring one or two of the individual Music Walk venues.

Destinations and itineraries

alcohol policy on holland america cruise line

The sheer breadth of destinations Holland America covers is impressive for such a small fleet. Currently, the line has ships scheduled to call on six continents (plus a sail past the seventh, Antarctica) with stops in more than 50 countries.

Itineraries run the gamut from standard Bahamas, Caribbean, Mexico, Canada/New England and Pacific Coastal voyages to more bucket-list regions like Alaska, the Mediterranean and the Panama Canal. More far-flung destinations include places like South Africa, Oman, Egypt, China, Australia and New Zealand, Japan, Turkey, Morocco, Malaysia, Fiji and other areas of the world that are often cumbersome to reach if you're not on a ship.

Many of the more off-the-beaten-path locations are reached via Holland America's two most impressive sailing types: world cruises, which last more than 100 days, and Grand Voyages that might include circumnavigations of places like Africa, Australia and New Zealand or South America and Antarctica. Both of these types of cruises tend to sell out a year or two in advance.

Plus, with the line's recent focus on longer cruises that travel round-trip from U.S. ports, Holland America makes it easy for Americans to set sail without having to fly.

The line's most popular and frequented destinations are the Caribbean and Europe, with other locales in proximity to North America — such as Canada/New England and the Mexican Riviera — proving to be the second-most popular with Holland America travelers.

Holland America has also had a commanding presence in Alaska for decades, offering some of the most robust opportunities to visit the 49th State. In fact, the brand is so established in the region that it owns and operates its own lodges near places like Denali National Park, making for the perfect pre- or post-cruise add-on.

Who sails Holland America cruises?

alcohol policy on holland america cruise line

Passengers on Holland America's ships tend to be well-traveled retirees (largely couples but with some singles in the mix) and multigenerational family groups usually consisting of grandparents, parents and children traveling together.

Because the brand's vessels lack flashy top-deck attractions like waterslides and roller coasters, the experience is best enjoyed by people who don't need constant entertainment. The ideal match for one of these sailings is someone who likes destination immersion and relaxation time, as well as superb dining and eclectic music.

Although every Holland America ship has a kids club on board, the youth spaces aren't as expansive and thrilling as the facilities on the larger and more family-friendly cruise lines. Well-behaved kids who enjoy learning and visiting new places will still have a great time.

Cabins and suites

alcohol policy on holland america cruise line

Holland America cabins fall into four main categories: insides (no views), outsides (sealed windows), balconies (walk-out verandas) and suites (high-end cabins, usually with extra space and more amenities).

If you're looking for a specialty cabin, those also are available. Holland America offers a selection of accessible rooms on every vessel. They span all cabin types, including suites, with fully accessible, fully accessible single-side approach (with both left- and right-side approaches as options) and ambulatory accessible varieties available. (Specific room types vary by ship.)

Spa cabins come in all basic cabin categories, as well as Neptune Suites. They encompass the same square footage as standard cabins in each of those categories and share the same layout. What sets them apart is that they provide spa-centric extras, such as flavored water and cut fruit, a spa concierge to assist with booking treatments and in-room fitness equipment like exercise DVDs and yoga mats.

Certain ships also offer solo cabins for one person. Designed with lone travelers in mind, they feature full-size beds in lieu of queens, and they're available in the outside category only, ranging from 127 to 172 square feet of space.

The line's only rooms designed specifically with families in mind are outside family cabins, which offer from 222 to 231 square feet of living space and accommodate as many as five people with a queen bed, a two-person sofa bed and a single bunk that pulls down from the ceiling. These cabins are also outfitted with a split bathroom setup — one room with a bathtub/shower, sink and toilet and another with a shower and sink.

Standard features in all Holland America ship cabins include a queen bed that can split into two twins, a couple of nightstands, a vanity/desk area with a chair or stool and a phone. There's also a closet with shelves and room to hang clothes. Rounding out the offerings are a safe, a minifridge, a variety of outlets and USB ports and a private bathroom. An in-room TV provides a handful of channels, ship-sponsored content and complimentary movies.

Select cabins also include sofas, some of which have pull-out beds. Other rooms made to sleep more than two people might have bunks that pull down from the ceiling.

Daily housekeeping service is included in all room types.

Standard amenities on Holland America vessels are a step up from those on most other lines. Some that you might enjoy include Elemis toiletries, bathrobes, shoeshine service, fresh fruit, signature pillow-top mattresses and complimentary 24/7 room service.

Restaurants and dining

alcohol policy on holland america cruise line

Holland America consistently cooks up some of the best food at sea . In fact, through its own Culinary Council, the line offers menu items — and even stand-alone restaurants — developed by renowned chefs like Ethan Stowell, Jacques Torres, Rudi Sodamin, Andy Matsuda, David Burke and Masaharu Morimoto. You can even find their items in the main dining rooms, meaning you don't have to pay anything extra to try them.

All of the line's ships offer at least four dining options: two complimentary (the buffet and main dining room) and two for a fee (Italian eatery Canaletto and the Pinnacle Grill steakhouse). As the ships increase in size, so too does the real estate dedicated to restaurants.

The line's Signature and Pinnacle classes both have added-fee Asian-fusion cuisine at joint venue Tamarind and Nami Sushi, and Pinnacle Class vessels also are home to quirky seafood restaurant Rudi's Sel de Mer and the Holland-themed Grand Dutch Cafe. The latter is a fantastic place to seek out complimentary between-meal snacks and extra-charge alcohol and specialty coffee beverages.

Given the brand's deep roots in Alaska and dedication to serving some of the best meals afloat, it uses sustainable Alaskan seafood sourced through a partnership with the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute and certified by Responsible Fisheries Management.

Foodies will enjoy celebrity chef-led dining experiences and cooking demonstrations on select sailings. Plus, Holland America's Vital Choice program provides passengers with at-home fish deliveries and recipes from the line's chefs so they can replicate the meals they've eaten on board when they return to dry land.

Passengers tend to frequent the main dining room on most nights. It provides an upscale sit-down experience with waiter-served meals. If you choose As You Wish dining, you can arrive at the dining room any time between set hours and eat at your own table (or a communal table if you wish). If you choose set seating, you will dine at one of two set dining times with assigned tablemates at the same table and with the same waiters each night.

Depending on each day's schedule, the main dining room might also be open for breakfast and lunch.

Additionally, each Holland America vessel has a buffet that serves a large number of cuisines from several stations for breakfast, lunch, dinner and late-night snacking. And, speaking of snacking, afternoon tea is offered on select afternoons on each voyage.

Other noteworthy options include free pool deck pizza, burgers and hot dogs, as well as 24-hour room service. Although select room service items come with a fee, most are free. (Holland America is the only mainstream cruise line that doesn't charge for standard, around-the-clock room service.)

Entertainment and activities

alcohol policy on holland america cruise line

Because Holland America cruises focus on the destinations visited, rather than onboard attractions, the entertainment roster is lighter than what you'll find with other mainstream lines. However, just because there are fewer options doesn't mean the ones that exist aren't excellent.

For starters, the newest vessels feature an entire music-themed promenade, and each ship's main theater, dubbed the World Stage, hosts several fabulous shows each cruise.

Theaters and shows

The most notable of Holland America's entertainment spaces is the Music Walk, a live music-themed promenade that's home to several venues for everything from dueling pianos and blues performances to rock 'n' roll.

B.B. King's Blues Club is a popular venue on Signature Class and Pinnacle Class ships. Named for the famed blues artist, it houses live performances of the same genre. On Vista Class, Signature Class and Pinnacle Class vessels, Billboard Onboard is where you can catch dueling pianos with musicians playing popular tunes that top the Billboard charts.

On Pinnacle Class vessels, a live band jams out to rock tunes in the Rolling Stone Rock Room. On ships in the Vista Class, the similarly themed Rolling Stone Lounge hosts a seven-piece band that covers a range of music styles, including R&B, rock, pop and country.

But the live music doesn't stop there. A three-piece band plays pop arrangements from the '60s through today at the Ocean Bar on all Vista Class and Signature Class ships.

alcohol policy on holland america cruise line

The main theater, World Stage, features a changing roster of shows, including the a capella group Cantare; Step One Dance Company performances that meld technologically advanced sets with beautiful choreography; and Island Magic, a modern take on steel drum music.

Performances vary by ship, and a separate rotating list of performers also travels from vessel to vessel as part of Holland America's partnership with Lincoln Center. (Note that Lincoln Center Stage, a venue previously dedicated to instrumental performances in the Music Walk area, is no longer found on the line's vessels .)

Finally, "Origin Story" is a high-tech, live-hosted documentary-style show that chronicles Holland America's history — from the original Rotterdam through the pandemic-related shutdown of 2020 — in a way that will leave you wanting to see it more than once. (Bring tissues.)

Other attractions and activities

Other activities you can expect to see on the daily schedule might include trivia, game shows (think Battle of the Sexes and the Newlywed/Not So Newlywed Game), scavenger hunts, pickleball, casino play, poolside movies, basketball shooting competitions, afternoon tea, board games, dance and mixology classes, spa seminars and wine tastings.

Top-deck attractions

alcohol policy on holland america cruise line

In keeping with Holland America's less-flashy style, you won't find much in the way of top-deck pastimes. There are no waterslides, go-kart tracks, surf simulators or rock climbing walls. What you will find, however, are two pools — a main pool covered by a retractable glass roof and another adults-only pool that overlooks the wake — as well as hot tubs for relaxing on each ship.

All ships also have tracks for walking and jogging. Locations and distances vary by vessel.

Children's programs

Holland America offers the appropriately (albeit uninspiringly) named Kids Club on all of its ships. It accommodates children from ages 3-17 under the supervision of professionally trained youth staff.

Children are split into three groups — Kids (ages 3-6), Tweens (7-12) and Teens (13-17) — for age-appropriate activities that might include video game play, arts and crafts, scavenger hunts, theme parties and poker tournaments.

Note that regular Kids Club programming isn't available on sailings of 25 nights or longer, including world cruises and Grand Voyages. Children's activities will be available from time to time as needed, depending on the number and ages of the children on board.

What to know before you go

Required documents.

alcohol policy on holland america cruise line

Unless you're sailing a closed-loop cruise (one that leaves from and returns to the same U.S. port) to one of a handful of destinations , you'll need a passport in order to sail with Holland America. If you are taking a closed-loop voyage, you can sail with your original birth certificate and a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver's license, instead of a passport.

Whether you're required to have a passport or not, TPG always recommends traveling with one, just in case there's an emergency that requires you to disembark your sailing in a foreign country.

You will also need your boarding documents, either printed or on your mobile device via the Holland America Line Navigator app , to show at the pier during embarkation.

Additionally, depending on your sailing, you might have to apply for visas in order to enter certain countries. In many cases, the line will handle the application and procurement for you, but pay attention to special instructions in cases where you might be responsible for obtaining your own documentation .

Unless you prepay gratuities or purchase a cruise fare that has them included in the price, you will be charged $16 per person during each day of your cruise ($17.50 if you're booked in a suite). You can adjust the amount up or down or remove it completely (which we don't recommend doing) by visiting the guest services desk. You cannot adjust or remove gratuities after your sailing has ended.

An 18% service charge will be added to bar, drink package and spa purchases.

alcohol policy on holland america cruise line

Holland America offers two Wi-Fi package tiers for a fee. The Surf package allows for checking email, accessing webpages, using select apps and utilizing message services, such as WhatsApp and iMessage. The Premium package offers access to select streaming apps (excluding streaming services like Hulu, Prime Video and Netflix) and audio and video call capabilities on apps like FaceTime, WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger.

If you purchase a cruise fare that includes Wi-Fi, you will receive the Surf package. To purchase the Surf package separately, the price starts at $18 per device, per day; Premium starts at $23 per device, per day. Passengers can upgrade from Surf to Premium or add additional devices at any time.

Carry-on drinks policy

Holland America's alcohol policy allows cruisers 21 years of age and older to bring bottles (750 milliliters or less) of wine or Champagne on board for a corkage fee of $20 per bottle, regardless of where the alcohol is consumed. No beer, liquor or boxed wine is allowed.

You can bring wine back on board if purchased in port, but liquor and other types of alcohol will be held for you until the end of the voyage. Most nonalcoholic drinks are not allowed to be brought on board. However, each passenger is allowed to bring cans or cartons of water, not to exceed six 1-liter cans or cartons or 12 500-milliliter cans or cartons. Plastic bottles are not allowed.

Smoking policy

alcohol policy on holland america cruise line

Smoking generally is not allowed in indoor areas on Holland America ships, including cabins and cabin balconies. Designated smoking areas are available outdoors and in specific areas of the casinos on select ships. E-cigarettes are allowed to be used in passenger cabins but not on balconies.

Violations of these policies will result in a $250 fine; repeated offenses could cause a passenger to be disembarked from the sailing.

All of Holland America's vessels offer send-out laundry, dry-cleaning and pressing services for a fee. There are no self-service laundry facilities on any of the line's ships.

Electrical outlets

Ships have a mix of North American 110-volt and European 220-volt outlets in their cabins. All of the line's vessels also have USB ports in their rooms, including some near the beds for easy overnight charging.

alcohol policy on holland america cruise line

The currency on Holland America ships is the U.S. dollar. The line's ships operate on a cashless system whereby passengers link a credit card or sum of cash to their room keycards, which can then be used to charge onboard purchases.

Drinking age

The drinking age on Holland America ships is 21. Passengers younger than 21 may not purchase or consume alcohol, nor may they bring it on board with them.

Holland America has two types of evening dress codes : smart casual and dressy. The former includes jeans without rips, holes or tears. Shorts, ripped jeans, beachwear and men's tank tops aren't allowed in restaurants at dinner.

On dressy nights, jeans aren't allowed in restaurants that aren't considered casual. For men, jackets and ties are preferred, but collared shirts with slacks are permitted. For women, dresses and skirts or slacks with blouses are appropriate.

Daywear is casual and influenced by the destination and current weather.

Holland America Line loyalty program

alcohol policy on holland america cruise line

The Mariner Society, Holland America's loyalty program , allows frequent passengers to earn status over time if they sail with the line enough.

The program is straightforward, with five tiers. You reach each tier after accumulating a certain number of "cruise night credits." Simply, for each night you spend on a Holland America ship, you'll get credit for one night — or one point. Staying in a suite? You'll snag double points.

The five tiers are 1-Star Mariner (after your first cruise), 2-Star Mariner (30-74 cruise nights), 3-Star Mariner (75-199), 4-Star Mariner (200-499) and 5-Star Mariner (500 nights or more).

Cruisers have other ways to earn points, too, such as spending a certain amount of money on board when they sail.

But what's the incentive to join the program? After just one sailing, you're entitled to drink vouchers, a special welcome lunch, discounts on Holland America merchandise and half off third and fourth passengers in a cabin on select cruises. Plus, you'll be eligible for onboard credit when you book certain voyages.

When you reach each subsequent tier, you'll unlock further discounts — or even freebies — on things like specialty restaurant dining, specialty coffees, minibar purchases, spa treatments, laundry and pressing services. You'll also gain perks like priority check-in and tendering, as well as Wi-Fi credits.

How much does a Holland America cruise cost?

alcohol policy on holland america cruise line

Holland America sailings aren't the least expensive you'll find, but they won't totally bust your budget, either, particularly if you opt for a more bare-bones cabin in the inside or ocean-view categories.

Although the line doesn't offer a truly all-inclusive cruise experience, it does allow you to purchase a Have It All premium package , rather than simply paying the base cruise fare. The package includes shore excursions, specialty dining, Wi-Fi and a beverage package. Gratuities are extra, but the line sometimes runs promotions that roll them into the cruise fare.

There are also special perks and priority benefits for passengers who pay for Club Orange access. When cruisers book with Holland America, they have the option to purchase a Club Orange add-on that provides priority check-in and disembarkation, priority tendering, dinner in a restaurant exclusive to Club Orange and a complimentary cabin upgrade, among other extras. Prices vary by sailing.

When it comes to fares, at the time of publication, the least expensive weeklong voyage I could find was $371 per person — $53 per person, per night — for a seven-night Alaska sailing through the Inside Passage, round-trip from Vancouver, British Columbia, on Sept. 22, 2024, aboard Nieuw Amsterdam in an inside cabin.

Prices range all the way up to $91,199 per person — $686 per person, per night — for a 133-night pole-to-pole Grand Voyage sailing round-trip from Fort Lauderdale's Port Everglades on Jan. 25, 2025, in a Neptune Suite aboard Zuiderdam.

How to book

alcohol policy on holland america cruise line

Cruisers can book Holland America voyages directly by visiting the company's website, by calling a cruise line representative at 855-932-1711 or by using a third-party online booking engine. If you need further assistance, a travel agent can help you narrow down the destination and ship you're looking for, field any special cabin requests you might have and process your reservation without costing you anything extra for the personalized service.

To maximize the return on your investment, carefully consider the type of card you're using to make the purchase. If you're someone who plans to pledge loyalty to Holland America, you might consider the Holland America Line Rewards Visa® Card . It offers welcome bonuses (at the time of publication, 10,000 bonus points when you spend $500 within the first 90 days of card opening), 2 points per dollar spent on Holland America purchases (including onboard purchases) and 1 point per dollar on all other purchases. Points can either be redeemed toward cruise purchases or as statement credits.

However, you might get more value out of one of TPG's favorite credit cards for booking cruises .

The information for the Holland America Line Rewards Visa Card has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Bottom line

alcohol policy on holland america cruise line

Holland America is a cruise line that caters to passengers seeking a premium experience at a reasonable price. It takes pride in its heritage, and its ties to immigration and historical events make it a compelling draw for history buffs and travelers interested in genealogy.

Passengers also have an impressive number of choices when it comes to destinations. Holland America offers itineraries spanning all seven continents, so you only need to decide where you'd like to go.

The line's Pinnacle Class renaissance shows a marked effort by the brand to improve the onboard experience, particularly in the way of entertainment. Sailings offer passengers excellent music and shows and serve phenomenal food in an elegant atmosphere.

Whether you're sailing with your significant other, friends or extended family, you're sure to enjoy a voyage with Holland America.

A Guide to Cruise Line Drink Packages

alcohol policy on holland america cruise line

Whether you're a first-time cruiser or a seasoned sailor hopping on as many last-minute cruise deals as possible, it's a question sure to arise: Is a cruise line drink package worth it?

It may be a highly personalized answer varying from ship to ship, and from one itinerary to the next. A Royal Caribbean drink package may be worth it to some on a Bahamas cruise , while those on an Alaskan cruise with Holland America may realize they drink fewer frozen cocktails while exploring Glacier Bay .

Found somewhere between the ubiquitous soda packages and the included-in-your-fare booze of most luxury lines, these programs let cruisers pay one base price that covers most -- if not all -- of their nonalcoholic and alcoholic drinks onboard. Of course, while high prices and annoying fine print may persuade some travelers to go it a la carte, for others, the freedom to sample the best cruise cocktails and wines of unknown provenance can be too appealing to ignore.

Primary options include the Premium Package, which features more than 20 types of beer and cider and liquors and liqueurs, and the Ultimate Package, which offers even more upscale offerings for liquors and liqueurs, along with Champagne and a selection of wines by the glass, and premium bottled waters.

There are also two wine packages: the Wine Lover Package and the Wine Connoisseur Package. The Wine Lover Package offers five-, seven-, 10- and 12-bottle packages with more than 80 bottles of wine selections. For higher-end wine aficionados, the Wine Connoisseur Package includes 50 bottled varieties including sparkling and dessert wines.

Fine Print : Packages can be pre-purchased (through Azamara or your travel agent ) or bought onboard throughout the length of your cruise. Charges begin on day one or the day you purchase the package. Packages are not refundable once purchased and cannot be downgraded to a lower-tier package. You can only order one drink at a time. Drinks through room service are also permitted, during hours in which shipboard bars are open.

Is the Azamara Drink Package Worth It?

For many travelers, Azamara's complimentary beverage program will be more than sufficient for the duration of a cruise as included beverages range from international beers, a rotating wine selection, and some standard spirits.

Carnival Fantasy (Photo: Carnival Cruise Line)

Carnival Ships with Drink Packages : Fleetwide

Carnival Drink Package Details : Carnival guests can save 10% by purchasing Carnival's Cheers! drink package before sailing, though pre-purchases are cut off a day before embarkation. Cheers! may also be purchased the first day onboard at full price either at Guest Services, from a bartender or at one of Carnival's bars .

After finding the best Carnival cruise deals , purchasing the Cheers! package will include spirits (including cocktails), as well as beer and wine by the glass, sodas, zero-proof frozen cocktails, energy drinks, specialty coffee, hot tea, 500ml bottled water and other nonalcoholic bottled beverages.

Carnival's Bottomless Bubbles program is a strictly soda package, with adult and child pricing available, and includes all-you-can-drink soda and juice for the duration of your cruise.

Fine Print : Packages can be purchased in advance online or by phone, until the evening prior to the cruise departure, or at bars once onboard. If one adult in a cabin purchases the Cheers! package, all adults over 21 years old in that cabin must also purchase it.

Participants can order only one drink at a time, there is a five-minute wait time required between drink purchases, and all bottles and cans are served opened; there is a limit of 15 alcoholic drinks per person within any 24-hour period. The package does not apply to drinks in souvenir glasses or via room service.

Due to state laws, the Cheers! package is not available until the second day of all sailings leaving from ports in New York and Texas. Cheers! applies to onboard beverages only; it cannot be used at Princess Cays or Half Moon Cay . The package must be booked for the entire duration of the voyage.

Is the Carnival Cruise Line Drink Package Worth It?

Carnival Cruise Lines remains one of the best budget cruises and offers one of the most affordable drink packages compared to other cruise lines, but its true value is determined by how many beverages you anticipate consuming during a cruise. If you plan on drinking more than three or four cocktails and a few premium coffees, the package pricing is likely your best deal.

Celebrity Cruises Alcohol Policy (Photo: Celebrity Cruises)

Celebrity Ships with Drinks Packages : All ships except for Celebrity Xpedition and Celebrity Flora , for which beverages are all-inclusive in the cruise fare

Celebrity Drink Package Details : Celebrity Cruises moved to an all-inclusive offering in 2020, with its "Always Included" packages, which include classic cocktails, wines by the glass, beer, sodas, specialty coffees and teas, juices and bottled water (as well as Wi-Fi and gratuities) when booking eligible cabin fares or when booking The Retreat or Aquaclass.

For passengers sailing on non-All Included Celebrity cruise deals, there are three add-on drinks programs to choose from.

Celebrity's Classic Package includes an array of liquors, beers, wines by the glass and a discount on wine bottles. This package also includes nonalcoholic beverages such as premium coffees and teas, sodas, juice and non-premium bottled water.

The Premium Package includes all classic package items along with premium bar selections, fresh squeezed juices, premium water bottles and bottled iced teas. The package also includes a discount on wine bottles.

Fine Print : Celebrity Drink Packages are sold on a per cruise basis, and not on a per day or any other basis. No refunds will be issued for unused credits. Packages may not be shared, and do not include beverages sold in gift shops, mini-bar, or room service.

Purchased packages may be modified up to four days prior to sailing by canceling and reordering the package. Cancellations or refunds will not be issued onboard the vessel after embarkation day . Availability of drink packages varies by ship. You must be at least 21 years of age to purchase any alcoholic package and to consume alcohol.

Is the Celebrity Cruises Drink Package Worth It?

Celebrity's "Always Included" offers are ideal when booking eligible cruise fares, as the Classic Package is already included and will serve most travelers best. When booking lower base fares, adding a drink package will appeal most to those guests who wish to sample a variety of alcoholic and zero proof beverages without worrying about additional charges throughout the voyage.

Costa Favolosa

Costa Ships with Drinks Packages : Fleetwide

Costa Drink Package Details : Costa Cruises offers two beverage packages: My Drinks, which is included as part of Costa’s all-inclusive fare, and My Drinks Plus, which is included in Costa's all-inclusive fare for suites or may be added on to other fares.

The package for children and teenagers aged 4 to 17 does not include alcoholic beverages. Top-shelf brands and cabin minibar items are excluded from the My Drinks package.

Is the Costa Cruises Drink Package Worth It?

Costa does not allow any drinks to be brought onboard from ashore. In addition, Costa's non-inclusive MYCRUISE fare is bare bones, with limited nonalcoholic beverages available throughout the day.

Cruise Critic members have reported tea, coffee and water is often only available within the buffet during open hours. For guests finding these policies restrictive, the all-inclusive My Drinks package is likely the best solution.

Included in the package terms, passengers are only allowed to order one drink at a time, with a minimum of 10 minutes between orders. Each adult in the same stateroom must purchase the same Drinks Option. Sharing is not permitted.

Is the Cunard Line Drink Package Worth It?

Cunard's Premium Soft Drinks Option is ideal for those who savor specialty coffees and mocktails, with the bonus of an unlimited assortment of fountain sodas and juices. Guests who will enjoy seven or more alcoholic beverages will likely find Cunard's Beers, Wines, and Spirits Option to be a solid value.

Disney Cruise Line Alcohol Policy (Photo: NaturalBox/Shutterstock)

Disney Ships with Drinks Packages : Fleetwide

Disney Drink Package Details : While Disney Cruises offers a variety of drinks onboard their ships, this cruise line does not have a traditional drinks package with an all-inclusive approach.

Instead, Disney cruisers will find a variety of family-friendly beverages included in the cruise fare: soft drinks, coffee and tea served during meals, soft drinks in the teen lounge, as well as other nonalcoholic drinks available at beverage stations.

Disney Cruise Line guests will pay for alcoholic beverages, bottled water, smoothies and specialty coffees. Guests may purchase individual drinks onboard or pay for select drink bundles either once onboard or in advance on Disney's Onboard Gifts page after booking.

Disney drink bundles range from six-packs of beer, six-packs of Truly canned cocktails, and wine options from single bottles up to seven-bottle packages.

At embarkation, per Disney Cruise Line's Alcohol Policy , guests 21 years of age and up may bring two bottles of wine or Champagne, or six beers (12 ounces or less each) in their carryon luggage. Guests may bring additional wine or beer on after each port.

Fine Print : Personal beverages brought onboard may not be consumed in any lounge or public area. A corkage fee is charged for consumption of personal bottles in the dining room. Disney-purchased bundles are non-refundable. If a guest has leftover wine, two bottles may be taken off the ship at disembarkation.

Is the Disney Cruise Line Drink Package Worth It?

Occasional beer and wine drinkers may find the Disney Cruise Line Alcohol Policy generous enough for bringing aboard 6-packs of beer or two bottles of wine at each port during a voyage. For those who plan on drinking more, Disney's bundles may be purchased onboard throughout the voyage.

Holland America Line Alcohol Policy (Photo: Holland America)

Holland America Ships with Drinks Packages : Fleetwide

Holland America Package Details : While Holland America 's four- and five-star Mariner Society members have access to complimentary wine tastings and mimosas during brunch, other cruisers may find the cruise line's various beverage packages appealing.

Holland America's Signature Beverage Package allows cruisers to indulge in a variety of wine, beer, spirits, cocktails (including nonalcoholic), sodas and coffee for an entire sailing. The Signature package limits guests to 15 total drinks daily, whether alcoholic or not.

For higher shelf selections, the Elite Beverage Package includes premium spirits, cocktails, wines, beers, coffees, nonalcoholic beverages, bottled water and sodas. Guests are limited to 15 alcoholic beverages per day, though nonalcoholic beverages are unlimited with the Elite package.

There are also two nonalcoholic packages available across Holland America cruise deals . Quench includes sodas, premium coffee, juices, mocktails and bottled water with a 15-per day limit. A Coca-Cola package offers unlimited fountain sodas fleetwide and Coca-Cola Freestyle beverages on Pinnacle-class ships including Rotterdam , Koningsdam and Nieuw Statendam .

Per Holland America Line's Alcohol Policy , guests may bring one bottle of wine or Champagne in their carry-on luggage during embarkation, or at ports of call, but there is a corkage fee regardless of where the personal alcohol is consumed. No beer or liquor may be brought onboard.

Fine Print : If one passenger in a cabin opts for a Signature or Elite drinks package, anyone who is 21 years old or older in the same cabin is required to purchase it as well. Packages exclude purchases made in the Mini Bar, Honor Bar, Chocolate Seduction, Room Service Dining, beverages purchased on Half Moon Cay and any self-service draft beer. Passengers can only order one drink at a time, and no sharing is permitted.

Is the Holland America Line Drink Package Worth It?

Holland America Line's drink packages remain modestly priced in comparison to some mainstream cruise lines, so those who plan on drinking more than a handful of beverages daily will likely find good value in the Signature Beverage Package or Quench.

One way Cruise Critic members have saved on beverages is with Holland's new Have it All Package , which bundles a Signature Beverage Package with shore excursion credit, Wi-Fi and a specialty dining option for often less than the standalone price of the Signature package.

Is the Margaritaville At Sea Drink Package Worth It?

Margaritaville At Sea drink packages aren't all-inclusive, so anyone who plans on drinking at least 10 alcoholic drinks will save money on the pre-packaged offerings. For less than 10 beverages throughout the voyage, a la carte pricing may be a better option.

The Minors Package includes mocktails and all the same selections as the adult Alcohol-Free Package. This package is usable everywhere except specialty restaurants and signature venues.

Fine Print : If one person in a cabin purchases a package, all others in the cabin must purchase a package; the same goes for family or friends traveling together and wishing to share a dinner table. Minors must have an appropriate drink package if adults traveling with them purchase a drink package, though drink packages are not mandatory for infants under three years of age.

Packages must be purchased for the entire duration of each voyage. Drink packages may be used at private island destinations including Ocean Cay and Sir Bani Yas in Emirates.

Only one drink may be ordered at a time. Packages do not include drinks in souvenir glasses. Gratuities are included in all MSC Cruises drink packages.

Is the MSC Cruises Drink Package Worth It?

Since gratuities are included within each of MSC's drink packages , many guests will find value in their preferred package choice. This is especially true since guests may save 15% by prepaying for a drink package before sailing.

NCL Ships with Drinks Packages : Fleetwide, but note Pride of America has its own package.

This package is only valid for beverages and does not include Starbucks snacks or food items. NCL's Unlimited Starbucks Package is available fleetwide, including Pride of America sailings.

Fine Print : Per Norwegian Cruise Line's Alcohol Policy , all packages are subject to a gratuity charge, inclusive of the Unlimited Open Bar Package included with Free At Sea promotions. Two drinks are allowed per passenger, per order. Packages must be purchased for all guests 21+ on the same cabin or reservation (i.e. if one person in a cabin on the same reservation opts for a Premium package, both passengers are required to purchase it).

Packages may not be shared, are non-transferable and non-refundable. Packages do not include room service, mini bar purchases, vending machines, or pre-cruise wine bottle purchases. Packages can be used in onboard restaurants, lounges, bars and Great Stirrup Cay, though not on Harvest Caye , nor sailings that are two days or less.

Is the Norwegian Cruise Line Drink Package Worth It?

No doubt Norwegian's Free At Sea promotion is an attractive offering as it includes the Unlimited Open Bar Package. Coffee lovers can still add on the Unlimited Starbucks Package to have the best of both offerings.

For those without the promotional fare, a drinks package on Norwegian Cruise Line is still a great idea when planning to drink more than a handful of alcoholic beverages each day. Otherwise NCL's craft cocktails can easily add up when purchased individually.

Guests can upgrade from the House Select to Prestige Select during the voyage, but you can't downgrade. Refunds aren't permitted on any package.

Is the Oceania Cruises Drink Package Worth It?

Many Oceania cruisers will find the House Select option suitable as it allows for a selection of beverages during meal service. When an itinerary has several sea days, though, cruisers may prefer the flexibility of enjoying drinks anytime, anywhere with the Prestige Select package.

Packages may be pre-purchased at least four days prior to boarding the vessel. Otherwise, beverage packages are only available to purchase onboard on embarkation day. Alcoholic drinks are limited to 15 beverages per 24-hour period, but nonalcoholic beverages are unlimited.

Is the Princess Cruises Drink Package Worth It?

When considering the cost of a beverage package on Princess, be sure to account for any nonalcoholic drinks you will likely consume, including sodas and specialty coffees. With the unlimited offering of these beverages, many guests will find the Princess Plus Beverage Package provides excellent value for their voyage.

Royal Ships with Drinks Packages : Fleetwide

Royal Drink Package Details : Drink packages on Royal Caribbean range from an unlimited option with the Deluxe Beverage Package to three nonalcoholic packages. Packages are valid for use when visiting Perfect Day at CocoCay or the private beach resort of Labadee .

The most popular package, considering individual Royal Caribbean drink prices, is the all-inclusive Deluxe Beverage Package. This option includes cocktails, spirits, beer and wine by the glass, along with mocktails, premium coffees and teas, still and sparkling water, fresh-squeezed juices and Coca-Cola beverages. This Deluxe Royal Caribbean drink package also includes discounts on bottled wines.

Fine Print : Drink packages available with Royal Caribbean deals do not include room service, mini bar items or beverages served inside licensed Starbucks stores aboard Royal Caribbean ships.

If one person in a cabin purchases a package, all others in the cabin aged 21 and over must purchase a package. Package users may only order one item at a time for individual consumption. No sharing is permitted.

Is the Royal Caribbean Drink Package Worth It?

When deciding on a package option, first consider how much are drinks on Royal Caribbean when purchased individually and what you expect to consume once onboard.

Most passengers will find the all-inclusive Deluxe Beverage Package a valuable option as it covers alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages alike. Debating visiting Labadee vs. CocoCay , Royal Caribbean's private islands? Your drink package is valid at both destinations.

Viking Ships with Drinks Packages : Fleetwide

Viking Drink Package Details : A sailing on any Viking Ocean Cruises ship includes soft drinks, beer and a rotating selection of house wines by the glass at lunch and dinner, plus specialty coffees and teas around the clock. Spirits, cocktails and premium wines cost extra.

Per the Viking Ocean Cruises Alcohol Policy , there is no corkage fee when guests bring their own wine or liquor onboard at embarkation time.

Is the Viking Ocean Cruises Drink Package Worth It?

Many guests aboard Viking Ocean Cruises will find the complimentary beverages offered during lunch and dinner provide enough variety during an itinerary. Since Viking guests may also bring their own bottled beverages of choice onboard without a corkage fee, only those seeking greater variety throughout the sailing opt for the Silver Spirits package upgrade.

Virgin Ships with Drinks Packages : Fleetwide

Virgin Drink Package Details : Virgin Voyages has a different approach to onboard beverages. Essential drinks are always included, which Virgin Voyages considers to be still and sparkling water, fountain sodas, non-pressed juices and a range of coffee and tea selections.

For alcoholic beverages, specialty coffees and other premium nonalcoholic drinks, guests may purchase drinks a la carte or buy a Bar Tab to cover drinks. In all cases, crew gratuities are already included so the price guests see is the price they pay.

The Bar Tab is available to purchase prior to boarding and acts as a prepaid onboard credit specifically redeemable for drinks. The Bar Tab can be used anywhere on the ship and at The Beach Club at Bimini .

Virgin Voyages strives to offer drinks for every budget so a la carte purchases won't have a great deal of sticker shock. Those purchasing a prepaid Bar Tab won't save money on individual beverages, though Virgin often offers a promotional onboard credit as a thank you to those selecting a Bar Tab.

Perhaps you've considered Virgin Voyages' Rockstar suites ? When it comes to drink options, these suites include a bottomless in-room bar and a daily Bar Tab for use throughout the ship.

Fine Print : There are no restrictions on pre-purchasing a Virgin Voyages Bar Tab. Guests may cover premium drinks for themselves or fellow cruisers, and the cruise line does not require everyone sharing a room to purchase a Bar Tab just because one guest has opted to do so. The only caveat is that the Bar Tab is non-refundable once the voyage starts.

Is the Virgin Voyages Bar Tab Worth It?

Guests sailing with friends will likely find the prepaid Bar Tab worth it, as it is shareable and valid throughout the ship and at the Bimini Beach Club. Solo sailors will likely find purchasing beverages a la carte to be a better budgetary option.

Windstar Cruises Alcohol Policy (Photo: IvanZivkovic/Shutterstock)

Windstar Ships with Drinks Packages : Fleetwide

Windstar Drink Package Details : Windstar always offers bottled water, sodas, specialty coffees, mocktails and juices within the base cruise fare. Alcoholic beverages may be purchased a la carte or as part of Windstar's all-inclusive cruise deals , which bundles Wi-Fi and gratuities with an Unlimited Beverage Package for one set price.

The Unlimited Beverage Package includes all domestic and imported beer, more than 30 varieties of wine and sparkling wine, cordials and cocktails, along with mini-bar items.

When not bundled with an all-inclusive fare, Windstar offers two other beverage programs. The Topmast Discoveries Beer & Wine Package includes domestic and imported beer along with more than 30 varieties of wine by the glass.

The Captain's Exclusive Beverage Package includes the same beer and wine offerings with the addition of Champagne by the glass, cordials, cocktails and mini bar selections.

Per Windstar Cruises' Alcohol Policy , during embarkation, passengers may also bring two personal bottles of wine or Champagne per cabin for seven-day cruises or three bottles for sailings of eight days or more. A corkage fee applies to personal bottles consumed in public areas of the ship.

Fine Print : All-inclusive packages must be booked at least five days prior to embarkation. The Topmast, Captain’s Exclusive and All-In Packages are sold per person and must be purchased in advance or during the first two days of your cruise and for the full duration of the cruise.

Prices do not include the standard beverage service charge, though prices are inclusive of applicable taxes. The minimum drinking age aboard Windstar Cruises is 21 years old.

Is the Windstar Cruises Drink Package Worth It?

Passengers sailing Windstar Cruises tend to favor the all-inclusive approach so all drinks, service charges and Wi-Fi is bundled into the pre-cruise fare. Light drinkers may prefer an a la carte approach if their primary beverage choices are mocktails and specialty coffees, which are always included in the base fare.

Cruise line alcohol policies: what you need to know.

' src=

Hey there, fellow cruise lovers! I’m excited to share a little insider knowledge that might just save your vacation: the alcohol policies on cruise ships.

I know, I know, it’s not the most exciting topic, but trust me, it’s important. Different cruise lines have different rules about bringing your own booze onboard, and it can be a real bummer to have your favorite bottle confiscated.

So, buckle up and join me on this informative journey as we dive into the wild world of cruise line alcohol policies. You won’t want to set sail without this knowledge!

Table of Contents

Key Takeaways

  • Each cruise line has its own alcohol policy, including restrictions on the type and amount of alcohol allowed to be brought onboard.
  • Corkage fees typically apply to alcohol consumed in public areas, but may not apply to alcohol consumed in cabins or when drinking from a glass while walking around the ship.
  • Alcohol purchased in port will be held by the cruise line until the end of the trip, and passengers may face consequences if they bring prohibited alcohol onboard.
  • It is important to follow the specific alcohol policies of each cruise line to avoid any issues or confiscation of alcohol.

Carnival Cruise Line Alcohol Policy

I can bring one 750 ml bottle of wine or champagne per adult on a Carnival cruise. I can’t bring liquor or beer, which is a bummer for beer lovers like me.

However, if I do want to enjoy my bottle of wine or champagne in the dining areas, there’s a corkage fee of $15. It’s a good thing to keep in mind when planning my cruise budget.

Now, let’s talk about the pros and cons of Carnival’s alcohol policy. One pro is that I can bring my own wine or champagne, which saves me money on expensive drinks onboard. However, the con is that I can’t bring liquor or beer, which limits my options.

As for avoiding corkage fees, my tip is to drink your wine in your cabin or in a glass while walking around the ship. This way, you can enjoy your drink without paying the fee. Cheers to that!

Celebrity Cruises Alcohol Policy

Celebrity Cruises allows passengers to bring two bottles of wine per person but prohibits alcoholic beverages brought onboard. This alcohol policy has its pros and cons.

On the positive side, passengers can enjoy their favorite wine during their cruise without having to purchase it onboard, which can save them money. It also allows them to have a taste of home or enjoy a special bottle they’ve been saving.

However, the policy can be seen as a con for those who prefer other types of alcoholic beverages, as they will need to purchase them onboard.

When it comes to best practices for drinking alcohol on a cruise ship, it is important to drink responsibly, pace oneself, and stay hydrated. It’s also a good idea to familiarize oneself with the specific alcohol policies of the cruise line to avoid any surprises or misunderstandings.

Cunard Cruise Line Alcohol Policy

Cunard allows passengers to bring one bottle of wine or champagne per adult, with a $20 corkage fee for consuming in public areas.

Carnival allows one bottle of wine or champagne per adult, with a $15 corkage fee for drinking in dining areas.

Celebrity Cruises prohibits alcoholic beverages brought onboard, but allows two bottles of wine per passenger with a corkage fee for consumption in public areas.

Disney Cruises has a limit of 2 bottles of wine or 6 beers per adult, with a $26 corkage fee for dining room consumption.

Holland America allows wine or champagne with a $20 corkage fee, with no specific limit on the number of bottles.

It’s important to be aware of these policies before embarking on a cruise to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience.

Disney Cruises Alcohol Policy

When it comes to Disney Cruises, they allow passengers to bring 2 bottles of wine or 6 beers per adult, with a $26 corkage fee for dining room consumption. This means you can enjoy your favorite beverages on board, but there are a few rules to follow.

First, the wine or champagne must be unopened and in your carry-on bags. Second, if you want to drink it in the dining room, you’ll need to pay the corkage fee.

But what about bringing alcohol from ports? Unfortunately, Disney Cruises does not allow passengers to bring any other alcohol on board. If you’re caught with prohibited alcohol, there may be consequences. The cruise line may confiscate and destroy it, or hold it until the end of the cruise.

Holland America Alcohol Policy

As for Holland America, they allow wine or champagne with a $20 corkage fee, but there is no specific limit on the number of bottles. This means that if you enjoy a glass of wine or champagne in your cabin, you won’t have to worry about any additional fees.

It’s a great option for those who prefer to relax and unwind in the comfort of their own space. Holland America understands that some passengers may want to bring their own bottles on board, and they accommodate this by charging a corkage fee.

Consequences of Bringing Prohibited Alcohol

Tips for Beating the Crowds

While exploring the crowded decks of a cruise ship, I discovered some useful tips for beating the crowds and making the most of my vacation.

One of the best tips I found was to start by researching and booking your cruise early. By doing this, you can often find the best deals and secure your preferred cabin location.

Another strategy for avoiding long lines is to plan your activities and dining reservations ahead of time. This way, you can bypass the queues and make the most of your time onboard.

Additionally, taking advantage of off-peak times can also help you beat the crowds. Whether it’s enjoying the pool in the morning or dining during non-peak hours, being flexible with your schedule can make a big difference.

Overall, with a little planning and these tips in mind, you can make your cruise experience more enjoyable and avoid the crowds.

Benefits of Sea Days

One of the most amazing things about sea days on a cruise is the opportunity to completely unwind and relax without any distractions. It’s a chance to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life and simply enjoy the beauty of the open sea.

One of the advantages of sea days is the abundance of relaxation opportunities available. Whether it’s lounging by the pool with a refreshing drink in hand, indulging in a spa treatment, or simply taking a leisurely stroll on the deck, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

These days allow you to slow down, recharge, and rejuvenate both your body and mind. The peacefulness of the ocean combined with the luxurious amenities on board create the perfect setting for ultimate relaxation.

So sit back, unwind, and let the worries of the world melt away as you sail to your next destination.

Cost of Luxury Cruises

I’ve always been curious about the cost of luxury cruises and how they compare to other types of vacations. When it comes to planning a vacation, there are several factors to consider when calculating the cost of a luxury cruise.

Firstly, the price of a luxury cruise includes accommodation, meals, and entertainment, which can often be more cost-effective than booking these components separately. Additionally, luxury cruises offer a wide range of amenities and services, such as spa treatments and fine dining, which can add value to your vacation experience.

In comparison to other types of vacations, luxury cruises may seem more expensive at first glance. However, when you factor in the all-inclusive nature of a cruise and the variety of activities and entertainment options available onboard, the value provided by luxury cruises becomes apparent.

So, if you’re looking for a vacation that offers convenience, relaxation, and unparalleled experiences, a luxury cruise may be worth considering.

MSC Cruise Wi-Fi: Packages, Speed, and Connectivity

An image showcasing a passenger on an MSC Cruise ship, leisurely browsing the internet on their smartphone

As a frequent traveler with MSC cruises, I understand the importance of staying connected while navigating the seas. That’s why I’m excited to share everything you need to know about MSC Cruise Wi-Fi: Packages, Speed, and Connectivity.

With two options to choose from, Basic Browse and Browse Stream, you can easily stay connected with text messaging, web browsing, and email. And if you opt for Browse Stream, you’ll even be able to stream and video chat.

So let’s dive into the details of the packages, pricing, speed, and more to ensure you have the best Wi-Fi experience on your next MSC cruise.

  • MSC offers two Wi-Fi packages: Basic Browse and Browse Stream, with the latter allowing for streaming and video chat.
  • Prices for Wi-Fi packages depend on booking ahead or onboard, as well as the number of devices connected.
  • The tested speeds on MSC Wi-Fi consistently range from 4-5 Mbps, which is slower than home internet but comparable to other cruise lines.
  • MSC’s Wi-Fi access is tied to the first device connected for the entire cruise, and additional devices require separate access purchases.

Wi-Fi Packages Offered on MSC Cruises

I can choose between two Wi-Fi packages on MSC cruises: the Basic Browse service and the Browse Stream service.

When comparing the costs, the Browse Stream service is the higher-end option. However, it offers several advantages over the Basic Browse service.

Both packages allow for text on messenger services, web browsing, and sending emails. But with the Browse Stream service, I can also enjoy streaming and video chat.

The prices for both packages depend on whether I book ahead or onboard, as well as the number of devices connected. While specific prices are not mentioned, recent cruise prices have been available.

Overall, the Browse Stream service provides a more comprehensive Wi-Fi experience, allowing me to stay connected and enjoy streaming content while on the cruise.

Cost and Options for MSC Wi-Fi Services

Pricing for MSC’s Wi-Fi services depends on whether you book ahead or onboard, as well as the number of devices you want to connect. MSC offers two options for Wi-Fi packages: Basic Browse service and Browse Stream service.

Both packages allow for text on messenger services, web browsing, and sending emails. However, the Browse Stream service also allows for streaming and video chat.

The prices for the packages vary depending on the duration of the cruise and whether you book in advance or onboard. Additionally, the cost increases with the number of devices you want to connect. Unfortunately, specific prices are not mentioned.

In terms of Wi-Fi speed comparison, MSC’s tested speeds consistently range from 4-5 Mbps. While slower than home internet, the speed felt relatively fast for browsing and video streaming.

Comparing Basic Browse and Browse Stream Packages

When comparing the Basic Browse and Browse Stream packages, I found that both options allow for text on messenger services, web browsing, and sending emails. However, there are some differences to consider when it comes to pricing options and speed performance.

Pricing options: The Basic Browse package is the more affordable choice, while the Browse Stream package is the higher-end option for streaming and video chat.

Speed and performance: While there is no specified speed difference between the two packages, the Wi-Fi service on MSC consistently tests in the 4-5 Mbps range. Although this may be slower than home internet, it is comparable to other cruise lines. Users have reported that websites load relatively quickly and streaming videos are presented in HD.

Device access and sharing: Access to the Wi-Fi service is tied to the first device connected for the entire cruise. If you have multiple devices or are traveling with others, you will need to purchase access for each device used simultaneously.

Sharing access: Unfortunately, sharing access between devices without purchasing access for each device is not possible. You can switch devices by logging out and logging in with another device, but each device will require its own access.

Overall, when comparing the Basic Browse and Browse Stream packages, it’s important to consider your needs, budget, and the level of streaming and video chat you require.

Pricing Factors for MSC Cruise Wi-Fi

One factor to consider for MSC Cruise Wi-Fi pricing is the number of devices connected. The cost of the Wi-Fi package depends on how many devices you want to connect. MSC offers different pricing options based on the number of devices you plan to use simultaneously. To give you an idea of the pricing structure, here is a comparison table:

As you can see, the more devices you want to connect, the higher the cost of the Wi-Fi package. It’s important to consider how many devices you will need to connect before making a decision.

Speed and Reliability of MSC Wi-Fi Service

I found the Wi-Fi service on my recent MSC cruise to be relatively fast and reliable. Compared to other cruise lines, the Wi-Fi speeds on MSC ships were quite comparable. Here are some key points to consider about Wi-Fi connectivity on MSC ships:

MSC offers two Wi-Fi packages: Basic Browse and Browse Stream. Both packages allow for text on messenger services, web browsing, and sending emails. However, the Browse Stream package also allows for streaming and video chat.

The prices for Wi-Fi packages depend on whether you book ahead or onboard, as well as the number of devices connected. The higher-end service for streaming costs more than the basic service.

During my cruise, the Wi-Fi speeds consistently tested in the 4-5 Mbps range. While slower than home internet, the internet usage felt faster than the speed tests suggest.

Websites loaded relatively quickly, and streaming video presented in HD. Overall, the speed felt relatively fast for browsing and video streaming.

Testing the Speed of MSC Cruise Wi-Fi

During my recent MSC cruise, I tested the speed of the Wi-Fi service and found it to be consistently in the 4-5 Mbps range.

Testing the speed of the Wi-Fi service on a cruise can be done using various methods. One common method is to use a speed test website or app to measure the download and upload speeds. This gives an indication of how fast the internet connection is on the ship.

It’s important to note that different cruise lines have different Wi-Fi speeds. Some may offer faster speeds, while others may have slower speeds. It’s always a good idea to research the Wi-Fi speeds of different cruise lines before booking a cruise, especially if having a fast and reliable internet connection is important to you.

Device Access and Sharing on MSC Wi-Fi

Access to multiple devices on MSC Wi-Fi is tied to the first device connected for the entire cruise, requiring the purchase of access for each additional device used simultaneously. This means that if you want to switch devices while using the Wi-Fi, you will need to log out of the first device and log in with the new one. Sharing Wi-Fi access between devices is not possible without purchasing access for each device.

Here are a few key points to consider:

Convenience: Switching devices on MSC Wi-Fi can be a hassle, as you have to constantly log in and out.

Cost: Sharing Wi-Fi access with multiple devices can add up, as you need to purchase access for each device used simultaneously.

Flexibility: Purchasing access for each device allows you to use multiple devices at the same time, giving you the freedom to stay connected wherever you are on the ship.

Personalization: Each device can have its own settings and preferences, making it easier to tailor your online experience to your liking.

Managing Multiple Devices on MSC Wi-Fi

Switching between devices on MSC Wi-Fi can be inconvenient. I have to constantly log in and out. Each device needs to purchase its own Wi-Fi access, so couples or groups traveling together will have to buy access for each device they want to use simultaneously. Sharing access between devices without purchasing additional access is not possible. So, if I want to switch from my phone to my tablet, I have to log out on one device and log in on the other. It would be more convenient if there was a way to seamlessly switch between devices without having to constantly enter my login information.

Hopefully, MSC will consider implementing this feature in the future.

Streaming and Video Chat on MSC Wi-Fi

In my experience managing multiple devices on MSC Wi-Fi, I’ve found it important to understand how streaming and video chat work on the network.

The streaming quality on MSC Wi-Fi is generally quite good. With the Browse Stream service, you can enjoy streaming programming in high definition. Although there may be a brief pixelated start, the video quickly improves and provides a satisfying viewing experience.

Additionally, the reliability of video chat on MSC Wi-Fi is commendable. Whether you’re connecting with loved ones or attending a virtual meeting, the network consistently delivers a reliable video chat experience.

The combination of good streaming quality and reliable video chat makes MSC Wi-Fi a suitable choice for those who want to stay connected and entertained while cruising.

Engaging bullet list:

  • Streaming quality on MSC Wi-Fi is high definition
  • Brief pixelated start, but quickly improves
  • Reliable video chat experience
  • Suitable for staying connected and entertained
  • MSC Wi-Fi is a great choice for streaming and video chat reliability.

Text Messaging Options on MSC Wi-Fi

When it comes to texting options on MSC Wi-Fi, I’ve found that the MSC app provides a convenient way to stay connected with friends and family while on the cruise.

The Wi-Fi reliability on MSC ships has been quite good, with consistent speeds ranging from 4-5 Mbps. While not as fast as home internet, it is comparable to other cruise lines.

The coverage on Ocean Cay, MSC’s private island, is also impressive. You simply need to switch networks from the ship to the island, and you have full access to the internet. This is especially useful for staying connected during visits to the private island, and some trips even include overnight stays there.

Overall, the MSC app and Wi-Fi coverage on Ocean Cay make it easy to keep in touch while enjoying your cruise.

MSC Wi-Fi on Ocean Cay and MSC App Integration

I’ve found that the MSC app seamlessly integrates with the ship’s Wi-Fi. It provides a convenient way to access the daily schedule, restaurant/bar guides, and track my spending. It’s a great tool to have on hand during my cruise.

Additionally, the Wi-Fi coverage extends to MSC’s private island, Ocean Cay. This is a fantastic feature. Being able to switch networks and still have full access to the internet is a huge plus. It’s especially useful for staying connected during visits to the island, as some trips even include overnight stays there.

The MSC app works perfectly with the ship’s Wi-Fi. It allows me to stay connected and access all its features without needing to purchase additional internet access. Overall, the integration of the MSC app with the ship’s Wi-Fi and its coverage on Ocean Cay enhances my cruise experience.

Can I Share My Wi-Fi Access With Other Devices Without Purchasing Additional Access?

No, you cannot share your Wi-Fi access with other devices without purchasing additional access. Each device needs its own access, and access is tied to the first device connected for the entire cruise. Wi-Fi limitations apply.

Are There Any Discounts or Promotions Available for Purchasing Wi-Fi Packages Ahead of Time?

Yes, there are discount options and early purchase benefits available for purchasing Wi-Fi packages ahead of time. It is a great way to save money and ensure a smooth and connected experience during the cruise.

What Is the Maximum Number of Devices That Can Be Connected to Wi-Fi at the Same Time?

The maximum number of devices that can be connected to the Wi-Fi at the same time is not specified. However, sharing Wi-Fi access between devices is not possible without purchasing access for each device.

Can I Use Video Chat Services Like Facetime With the Basic Browse Package?

Yes, with the basic browse package on MSC Wi-Fi, video chat services like FaceTime may not be available. However, there may be alternative video chat options that can be used.

Is Wi-Fi Available in All Areas of the Ship, Including Cabins and Public Spaces?

Yes, Wi-Fi is available throughout the ship, including cabins and public spaces. Signal strength may vary, but I found the connectivity to be reliable in dining areas and entertainment venues.

Thanks for catching that! I mistyped. It should have been 1.33333... Kinda weird that I got the words about numbers right but the numbers about numbers wrong.

Even though the wrong numbers were about alcohol, I can't even blame the wine.

We are happy with whatever, however, in 2012, when this pic was taken, we felt like smugglers. On a 16 night Caribbean, and we celebrated like pirates and generously. Now of course we do not need to carry on that much any longer, but then, it was so worth it to have wine on our balcony pre- dinner. Anyone else carry on more than a case of wine back in the day?

On our Mediterranean cruise we started with just a half case but we loved being able to bring a bottle or 2 back to the ship at each of our port stops. We ended the cruise with 5 days in Rome, finishing up what we had gathered during the cruise. Oh, that was a wonderful trip!

Our buddy who loves wine brought a case on board in SD for a 7 night cruise to MX...it was fun!! 🙂

In 2009 on a Westerdam Panama cruise, we carried on 16 bottles of wine in a suitcase bought for the purpose.  I had worked out the maximum weight, but then had to lift it onto the baggage belt for the security check.  While the wine was okay and legal, my back wasn't for three days afterwards!   🙂

I see that the beverage pkg in the "Have it All" is for drinks up to $11. On a cruise I like to have an evening martini or cosmo. Does $11 cover those? The martini needs to be with Bombay Sapphire.

Yes to the cocktails and yes to the Bombay Sapphire.

Just one caveat - my yes is based on the Signature Beverage Package when the ships last sailed.  None of us know if there will be changes made to it when they resume sailing.

Brought a case onboard for a 35 day Voyage of Vikings cruise. As we worked through it watching the scenery go by part of the fun was replenishing at various ports. We didn't have a corkage fee either.  Seems like ancient history now but great memories.

With this elimination of plastic I wonder if glass bottles of water can be brought on board?

Ok, so here's a question: what about sparkling water, in cans? Like Lacroix, Bubly, etc. It's water, with some carbon dioxide and flavoring, in cans. From what I read it should allowed, up to 12 cans.

Anybody know?

Sparkling water has never been an issue.  It’s water.  As long as it’s non alcoholic, it’s a non issue - at least, that’s the way it’s always been 😉

I carried on 3 cases on the Grand Asia three years ago. I was onboard for 89 days, so that worked out perfectly, plus I bought a few bottles here and there in AU and NZ ports. I had to pay $18 corkage per bottle, but it was all in my cellar already, long since paid for, so it seemed like a bargain, and I got to drink wine I liked.

We sailed out of Seattle, and I lived nearby, so I didn't have to fly the wine anywhere, which would have made it prohibitively expensive.

@kazu   A moment of your time please?  I am sailing on the N. Statendam which has the Coca Cola machines.  I am getting conflicting information whether those are included in the Signature Package or not.  Do you know for certain if they are or aren't?  I am not a big soda drinker but a diet cherry coke in the afternoon sure can cut my sugar cravings. 😃 .    Thank you.

I haven’t used the Coca Cola package myself but according to the HAL web style the Freestyle is included in the Coca Cola package on the Pinnacle Class ships.  Screen shot with the link below:

I would be tempted to take that along in case if you are worried and of course, you can access the policy on the Navigator app.

Thank you for pointing that out.  I appreciate it.   To be clear, it is included in the Signature package.  I am very confused by the whole thing

Here are screen shots of the Unlimited Coca-Cola, Quench and Signature packages for our future cruises - taken today. Note that the Freestyle Coca-Cola is included in the Unlimited Coca-Cola and Quench packages but NOT the Signature (or Elite, didn't do a screen shot of it)

Everything You Need to Know About Holland America Cruise $49 Standby List

I f you’re looking for last minute cruise deals, Holland America’s standby list program is worth checking out. This program allows you to book a spot on Holland America cruises for $49 per person per day. Essentially, you’ll be put on a standby list, and if there are any available cabins close to the departure date, you’ll be confirmed to go on the cruise! It’s a great option for spontaneous travelers!

What Is the Holland America’s Standby List Program

Holland America’s standby list program is great for travelers who are flexible with their travel dates and are looking for last-minute cruise deals. The program allows you to add your name to a standby list, and if there is space available on the cruise ship, you will be confirmed to go on the cruise. They will review the standby list 7 to 2 days prior to sailing.

Holland America will notify you about your confirmation no less than two days before departure. Given the short notice, this program is best for people who live near the cruise port. Otherwise, you will be scrambling for last minute airfare!

You can add your name to the standby list by calling your travel agent or calling Holland America directly at 1-877-724-5425.

Holland America’s Standby List Payment Process

If you are interested in being placed on Holland America’s standby list, it’s important to understand the payment process. When you contact Holland America to request a spot on the standby list, you will be required to pay a fee of $49 per person per day for the first two people in your stateroom. It’s important to note that this fee is non-refundable.

When you are added to the standby list, you will be charged the full cruise fare. The only way you can receive a refund of the standby fee is if Holland America does not confirm your booking within two days of the scheduled sailing date.

How Much is the 3rd and 4th guests?

The 3rd and 4th guests are free, but you will have to pay their taxes and port fees.

When Will You Receive a Notification About Your Cruise Confirmation?

You can expect to receive confirmation of your cruise booking two days before your scheduled departure. They will tell you whether you are confirmed to go on the cruise or not. In case you are not confirmed, the cruise company will refund your cruise fare.

However, if you wish to continue waiting in the hope of securing a spot on the cruise, you have the option to remain on standby. This means you will remain on the standby list until 90 minutes before the departure time, and you will be notified if a spot becomes available.

What Cruise Ports?

There are several cruise ports that are included in the standby list of Holland America. If you are looking for a cruise to Alaska, you can choose sailings from Vancouver, Seattle, and Whittier cruise ports. There are also Pacific coast cruises from San Diego. As well as 14 to 42 days transatlantic cruises from Fort Lauderdale. There are also several New England cruises from Boston, Montreal, and Quebec.

What Stateroom Will You Get?

If you are picky about your stateroom, then you might not like this program. You won’t have the option to choose your stateroom. Instead, Holland America will assign you a stateroom category based on availability at the time of booking, which could be any category up to a verandah stateroom.

It’s important to keep in mind that the cruise fare is non-refundable, meaning that once you’ve confirmed your booking, you won’t be able to request a refund if you’re unhappy with the stateroom you’ve been assigned.

What About Solo Travelers?

If you are a solo traveler, you can add yourself to the standby list for $49 per day.

Can You Get a Refund?

Again, once you add your name to the standby list, you will be charged the full cruise fare of $49 per person per day. The only way you can get a refund is if you are not confirmed to go on a cruise. You do have the option to add a cancellation protection plan to your booking.

Who is Holland America’s Standby List Best For?

Holland America’s standby list is a great option for travelers who are looking for a last-minute getaway and have the flexibility to travel at short notice. It’s also best for people who live near the cruise port, so you don’t end up paying exorbitant last-minute airfare fees. Looking for more ways to get last minute cruise deals?
