It was great to see our heroes in real life! Unfortunately Maddy's voice has lost quite a bit of its fine quality, but her energy made up for this. The musicians were unbelievably good.

Wonderful show at the SPACE in Evanston. Standing room only. The small space supported well the acoustics of the band. Maddy was in exceptional form and we all appreciated the backstories behind the songs. Jessie appeared to be the youngest on the stage and performed like an old pro. Kudos to the bass player stepping in just 3 days prior to join the tour. Liam and Julian solidly delivered and the stand alone, vocal harmonies that often rang out with little to no instrumental backing moved us most. A Celtic inspired joy and well worth seeing them live here in the US.

Folk music is one of my favourite genres of music, and it’s great to listen to tracks from over the years, and Steeleye Span’s back catalogue of successful tracks captivated me from my first listen. It’s great how their folk music focuses on a mixture of Irish ballads and more up tempo tracks, almost Irish jigs. The entire band are incredibly talented, and seeing the two drummers work in synchronisation with the fiddler performing some outstanding melodies was mind blowing.

When they played their faster tracks, Maddy Prior shouted out to the audience that if anyone knew how to Morris dance that it was our chance, so everyone was jumping and dancing around like mad. They played through a great selection of their music, playing some from before their hiatus, and a vast amount of tracks from Now We Are Six Again. When they played Hard Times of England, they had everyone singing along, and they even had a projection if lyrics so that everyone could join in.

Although Maddy’s voice isn’t as strong as it once was, it still sounded fantastic, and all of the other musicians sound as if they were still in the 80s, phenomenal performances all round.

[News] Steeleye Span announce 55th anniversary tour dates for May 2024

Steeleye Span have announced a run of live dates for England and Wales for May to celebrate both their 55th anniversary and their recent “ The Green Man Collection ” release.

The band will introduce new member Athena Octavia , part of Indie Folk band Iris & Steel and also an acclaimed classical violinist on the new dates and promise that “ the nights will offer a selection of songs from across the years and albums, coupled with firm fan favourites .”

Steeleye Span released “ The Green Man Collection ” in December 01, 2023. A 15-track collection which features tracks from the band’s recent albums alongside new versions of three Steeleye classics including a reworking of “ Hard Times Of Old England ” which features Status Quo ’s Francis Rossi and a cover of “ Shipbuilding ” written by Elvis Costello and notably covered by Robert Wyatt .

The album’s title-track “ Green Man ” was written by Bob Johnson , guitarist and vocalist with the band from 1972-77, from 1980-2000 and again in 2002, and responsible for many of their classic ballads from the era. Previously lost for 40 years, the song addressed the issue of climate change long before it became such a widespread topic.
