The good news is that there are plenty options for those that are looking to get on the slopes without having to rent a car. Cause who wants to drive in the city anyway. (I know I don't).

If the idea of spending hours in the car and missing that fresh morning powder fills you with dread, then this popular Jersey mountain’s location, just 47 miles from Manhattan, should make your snow bunny heart leap for joy. 2.  Thunder Ridge

Another winner for those who hope for slopes without a serious commute, Thunder Ridge is only 50-some miles north of NYC. On weekends and holidays—including the whole week of Presidents’ Day—hop on the Metro North for a speedy, car-free trip and great package deal.  Lift tickets start at $50 for afternoon and twilight skis on weekdays, $75 for an all-day ski pass on weekends. 3.  Hunter Mountain

A favorite for New Yorkers looking to show off their skills, Hunter Mountain is the closest “big mountain” to the city and is well-known for its selection of jumps, boxes and rails for snowboarders and skiers, as well as its dozens of more traditional trails. Multiple bus lines  will take New Yorkers on the three-hour voyage to the Catskills, including Urban Sherpa , which runs day trips for $161 . 64 Klein Ave, Hunter, NY (518-263-4223)

4.  Mount Snow

Vermont is famous for having the best ski country on the East Coast, and Mount Snow is one of the reasons why. 5.  Belleayre Mountain

Owned by New York State, the 47 trails at Belleayre Mountain resort in upstate New York are not only budget-friendly but also free of the crowds attracted to other more flashy mountains in the area. 15 Best & Closest Skiing to NYC (Plus Car-Free Options)

Looking for the closest skiing near NYC for a wintery getaway? Whether you’re looking for a day trip from the city, and yes it is possible to visit a few of these slopes near NYC without a car too or looking for a weekend getaway. I got you.

In this guide, I will break down the best ski resorts in Upstate New York as well as options that are within a 5-hour drive from New York City including ski resorts in Southern Vermont, Connecticut, Western Massachusetts, the Pennsylvania Poconos, and New Jersey.

And if you’re coming from the city like us, chances are you don’t have a car. If you have no desire to rent a car, don’t worry. There are NYC ski bus options as well as skiing near NYC that has public transportation options and shuttle services so you can plan an easy day trip to the slopes and be back in the city by night.

When is the ski season in New York?

This varies year to year, but the ski season in New York is typically from end of November through March. It’s best to check with each ski resort though, especially if you’re planning a ski trip near the beginning or end of the season. And honestly, some winters, like the 2022 winter were terrible for those who wanted to hit the slopes as there was barely any snowfall in the Northeast.

If you find yourself looking at the Southern Vermont ski resorts near NYC, you’ll have a slightly longer window to enjoy skiing for the season as their ski season can start as early as the beginning of November and last through May. Again, this depends on the season.

All of these skiing options near NYC offer gear rentals. We advise you rent your gear in advance if you need to so it’s ready to pick up when you arrive. Also, if you want or need to book lessons, many of these places offer ski and snowboarding lessons too which you should book in advance too to secure a spot.

Renting Snowboard & Ski Clothes

All of the resorts mentioned have a form of ski and snowboarding gear rental. We recommend booking in advance if you need to rent boots, snowboards, skis, and helmets.

This does not include snowboard or ski clothing rentals. If you do not have your own, you have options to rent snowboard and ski clothing from services like Kit Lender . This is great for short-term rentals, you simply book your kit and they ship it to you. The only drawback is that they have a 3 days rental minimum, so if you’re only doing a day trip this might not be the most cost-effective way.

Another option if you aren’t ready to fully invest in the expensive kit for a full snowboard or skiing outfit is to take advantage of REI’s second-hand ski shop where you can buy gently used discounted gear.

And another great alternative for those living in New York City is to take advantage of the free Buy Nothing movement. They have groups by neighborhood, typically on Facebook where neighbors request items they need or post items that they are hoping to give away to a neighbor who may need and or use it. It’s a very cool hyperlocal mutual aid/anti-consumerism community. If people aren’t willing to give up their items, they often loan them to neighbors too!

There are so many great weekend getaways in the Catskills all seasons, but especially in the winter, one of the mountains that offers the closest skiing to NYC is Hunter Mountain.

Hunter Mountain Resort has been a popular ski resort near NYC since the 1950s and is currently operated by Vail Resorts, a reputable mountain resort company based out of Colorado.

Better yet, if you’re car-less you can use the several shuttle services that come to Hunter Mountain from the city with options on different days of the week like NYC Snow Bus (Manhattan & Brooklyn), Sourced Adventures (Manhattan), Urban Sherpa Travel (Manhattan), and OvrRide East Coast (Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, Hoboken).

This ski resort near NYC covers four different mountain faces with 67 trails with something for all ski levels and 13 lifts. Hunter Mountain also has 3,200 feet of diverse terrain with wide trails, there are also two different terrain parks with rails, jumps, and more. Oh, and there’s snow tubing and liftside restaurants too.

Because of the number of lifts Hunter Mountain offers, helps reduce waiting times to get up the mountain, especially on the weekends when it’s busiest, there are also separate lifts for the bunny slopes.

If you’re looking to make an overnight trip or getaway out of this, you can stay on the mountain at Hunter Mountain Resort which has ski-in and ski-out accommodations for those wanting to stay close to it all. Or check out Scribner’s Catskill Lodge which is just down the road (less than 3 minute’s drive to Hunter Mountain) which is a stylish, mountain resort with an ice rink in the winter and plenty of fireplaces to cozy up to on a chilly day.

Windham Mountain (Catskills)

• Location: Windham, New York in the Catskills
• Driving Distance from NYC: 2.5 – 3 hours
• Car-Free Option: Urban Sherpa Travel, OvRride, Adirondack Trailways Bus, NYC Snow Bus

Many options for the best and closest skiing to NYC can be found in the Catskills including Windham Mountain. Hunter Mountain is probably the most popular (and crowded) in the area, so you can expect the other Catskills resorts to be less full. Not to mention, this is a great option for skiing near NYC for all levels of skiers and has family-friendly activities like ice skating, a tubing park, and a spa for those who want to melt away their aches and pains after a day on the slopes.

If you’re coming without a car, don’t sweat it. This is another one of the best ski resorts near NYC to offer multiple shuttles and NYC ski bus options including tour operators like Urban Sherpa Travel (Manhattan) and OvRride. Also, from Port Authority you can hop on the Adirondack Trailways Bus to Windham.

Windham Mountain has 54 trails with 11 lifts, you’ll find great options for beginners to intermediate levels. There are also Black Diamond and Double Black Diamond trail options too as well as six terrain parks.

There are also restaurant options near the lifts and for some Apres-ski relaxation book a treatment at the Alpine Spa.

If you’re wanting to make a trip out of it with a group of friends, Whisper Creek Condos have rentals available with ski-in ski-out access that can sleep 8-10. Or pick an option nearby the mountain with a shuttle like Hotel Vienna , which also has an indoor spa to soak in after a day on the slopes and is pet-friendly.

Plattekill Mountain (Catskills)

• Location: Roxbury, New York in the Catskills
• Driving Distance from NYC: 3 hours
• Car-Free Option: Urban Sherpa Travel
• Lessons Available: Yes, private and small group (up to 4 people) lessons available

One of the most charming ski resorts near NYC is Plattekill Mountain located in Roxbury, on the eastern edge of Delaware County in the Catskill Mountains. This is a more intimate, rugged mountain but still offers 38 trails, many of which go through the forest.

We actually got to experience how this is some of the closest skiing to NYC last winter when we left early am and were on the slopes by late morning. Compared to other ski resorts in Upstate New York we’ve been to, we really enjoyed how old-school this one felt. It has a mom-and-pop shop operating style to it that we liked.

While we drove, Urban Sherpa Travel does offer packages including round-trip shuttle services to and from NYC as well as lift tickets for those who aren’t driving and looking for a car-free option.

The forest paths I’d say are better for advanced folks as they were more narrow and got flat at some points so if you’re not able to keep speed, it can be tricky in some of the narrow spots. 

This resort has four lifts, we didn’t experience long wait times on a weekday at all, but I can imagine it gets backed up on the weekends. They have one terrain park and there’s also snow tubing here and a classic ski bar and cafeteria in the lodge. 

If you want to stay the night consider making an experience out of it by booking one of the really unique themed rooms at The Roxbury Experience ! There’s nothing quite like this near any of the other ski resorts near NYC!

They have two different properties just down the street from one another, one with a private waterfall, and the rooms are unbelievable from Wizard of Oz to Cinderella and castle themes!

Gore Mountain (Adirondacks)

• Location: North Creek, New York in the Adirondacks
• Driving Distance from NYC: 4 hours
• Car-Free Option: NYC Snow Bus (when available)
• Lessons Available: Yes, multiple options available

Located in the Adirondack Mountains, Gore Mountain is not only one of the best ski resorts near NYC in Upstate New York, but it’s also the largest ski resort in the state. With 109 trails, 14 lifts, and nine sides of 4 different mountain peaks!

Because this is the largest ski resort in the state, you feel spread out and it doesn’t feel crowded. Plus, with all the different ski lifts, gondolas, and magic carpets you won’t have to wait too long either. 

There are seven different ski areas, all offering something a bit different. There are also 8 terrain parks, 28 glades, and two base camps including the Ski Bowl Base Lodge, the OG that’s nearly a century old. Plus, you can enjoy a break at the mountaintop lodge too.

Their twilight skiing option is also popular giving skiers and snowboarders the option to get in some extra time on the mountain at night at their lighted Village Slopes. They also have 11 groomed loops for cross-country skiers if that’s more your thing.

Due to the sheer size of this option for skiing near NYC, this in my opinion is best done on a multi-day trip. Plus the Adirondacks is one of the best getaways from New York City – so it’s easy to add extra things to do in the area.

There is no lodging on site, but within 15-minutes by car you can stay at the beautiful and rustic Garnet Hill Lodge which also has its own trails for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing as well as a restaurant and cozy spots to relax at like fireplaces around the property.

Whiteface Mountain (Adirondacks)

• Location: Wilmington, New York in the Adirondacks
• Driving Distance from NYC: 5 hours
• Car-Free Option: Amtrak to Lake Placid & use the Mountain Valley Shuttle to Whiteface Mountain

This is the most famous ski resort in Upstate New York because it not only hosted one, but two winter Olympic Games in 1932 and 1980. While this is one of the furthest ski resorts near NYC, it’s still only around a 5-hour drive or if you need a car-free option you can take the Amtrak train to Lake Placid, but that’s 9.5 hours long – eek! There are multiple daily shuttles from Lake Placid and Wilmington to Whiteface Mountain, so it is manageable without a car but not as a day trip.

Whiteface Mountain is home to the largest vertical drop east of the Rocky Mountains and offers trails for all skill levels, which makes this a great resort for anyone including the most advanced of athletes who can head to The Slides for true double black diamond routes.

There are 90 trails spanning 25 miles over three different mountain peaks and 11 different lifts making it easy to find space on the mountain without crowds but also no need to wait in long queues to get on a gondola, lift, or quad.

There is no resort on the mountain, in fact, you’ll probably want to stay in the luxury resorts at Lake Placid which have complimentary shuttles to and from Whiteface Mountain which is about a 20-minute drive away.

Check out Whiteface Lodge which also has a heated outdoor pool or Mirror Lake Inn Resort & Spa , a AAA Four-Diamond hotel right on the lake with options to book rooms with a balcony overlooking the winter landscape and frozen Mirror Lake as well as a private fireplace.

Belleayre Mountain (Catskills)

• Location: Highmount, New York in the Catskills
• Car-Free Option: OvRride, Adirondack Trailways Bus, Sourced Adventures

For the closest skiing to NYC, Belleayre Mountain in the Catskills is a popular choice! Not only is it a pretty quick drive from the city, but you can also take advantage of shuttle services like Adirondack Trailways Bus from Port Authority and OvRride which offer regular seasonal options to the mountain from the city for day-trippers.

Many people will come here to avoid the crowds Hunter Mountain attracts on the weekends. While Hunter is known to accommodate more advanced skiers, Belleayre is known for accommodating more intermediate-level folks, although anyone can find a route here suited to their level.

If you’re a beginner, this is a great option for skiing near NYC because the bottom half of the ski resort has several green/beginner trails to learn on. Closer to the summit of Belleayre Mountain you can find the more advanced diamond and double diamond runs. There are 50 trails, 8 lifts including a high-speed gondola (the only one in the Catskills), and terrain parks.

There are also trails for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing, multiple dining options, and three lodges. 

For those making a getaway out of it and looking for lodging head to Urban Cowboy Lodge and book one of their Alpine Bathing Suites for a clawfoot tub overlooking a panoramic window with a private fireplace crackling at night. The design of the entire lodge is stunning and they have a sauna you can enjoy even on the coldest of evenings.

Thunder Ridge Ski Area (Hudson Valley)

• Location: Patterson, New York in the Hudson Valley area
• Driving Distance from NYC: 1 hour
• Car-Free Option: Metro-North Ski Train from Grand Central with free shuttle to Thunder Ridge Ski Area

For the closest skiing to NYC look no further than Thunder Ridge Ski Area in the Hudson Valley area, just an hour’s drive from the city with options to take the Metro-North ski train from Grand Central in Manhattan. From the train station, they provide free shuttles that run skiers and snowboarders to Thunder Ridge Ski Area.

This is the most convenient place to ski near New York City as you can easily just go for a few hours and be back to the city before your next meal.

There are 22 trails, 3 chair lifts, 4 magic carpets, and great for beginners and those learning how to ski or snowboard as well as more advanced trails for those looking for more of a challenge including a terrain park. 

They also have night riding available too if you want to come after work or just for the evening! This is definitely geared more towards those for a quick day on the slopes, so we don’t recommend lodging as you can take the train back to the city.

Mount Peter Ski Area (Hudson Valley)

• Car-Free Option: Bus 197 from New York Port Authority to Warwick Park & Ride (then 6-minute Uber to Mount Peter Ski Area)
• Lessons Available: Yes, free beginner lessons on weekends (ages 5 and up), private lessons, and group lessons

For the closest skiing to NYC within an hour, Mount Peter Ski Area in the Hudson Valley is another great option. It’s an hour’s drive by car or if you need a car-free option it can be around 2 hours by taking the 197 Bus from New York Port Authority in Manhattan to Warwick Park & Ride. From here you can call a ride share to take you the last 5-6 minutes drive to the base of the mountain.

This ski resort near NYC is the oldest operating ski area in New York and is family-owned. One thing I love about this mountain and ski resort is that they offer free beginner lessons daily for ages 5 and up on the weekends!

On the mountain, you can find 13 groomed trails that are friendly for beginners and intermediates as well as three black-diamond trails for the more advanced skiers and snowboarders. They also have a snow tubing run and ice skating rink, catering to be a family-friendly skiing destination near NYC, which fits the vibe since it is one of the few remaining family-owned and operated ski resorts in the country.

They also have onsite dining at the Main Lodge. Since this is such a close ski resort to NYC, we recommend doing this one as a day trip.

Catamount Mountain Resort (Catskills/Berkshires)

• Location: Hillsdale, New York in the Catskills and Berkshires
• Driving Distance from NYC: 2.5 hours
• Car-Free Option: NA
• Lessons Available: Yes, private and group lessons plus package options

Located on the edge of the Catskills New York border with the Berkshires in Western Massachusetts, Catamount Mountain Resort is another popular option for skiing near NYC. Located only a 2-hour drive from the city, this is a great option for folks with a car. Unfortunately, there really isn’t a good car-free option since the closest the train gets you is still a 25-minute drive by car.

Catamount Mountain is great for beginners and intermediate-level skiers and snowboarders, which is why this is a great family-friendly option and less intimidating option for newbies. They have 44 trails, 8 lifts, and terrain parks. There are also a few black diamond and double black diamond routes for those a little more advanced. There’s also a snow tubing area.

There are a few dining options slopeside at the lodge, as well as accommodation if you wanted to stay here and make an overnight or getaway out of it.

Best Skiing Near NYC in Surrounding States

Stratton mountain resort (vermont).

• Location: Stratton Mountain, Vermont in the Green Mountains
• Car-Free Option: Stratton Jitney
• Lessons Available: Yes, private and kids lessons available

Some of the best ski resorts near NYC are actually located in Southern Vermont! Stratton Mountain Resort is definitely a top choice as the snow season is slightly longer in Vermont than some spots in upstate New York and it’s only 4 hours by car. Better yet, Stratton Mountain caters to New York City by running the regular Hampton Stratton Jitney from the city to the mountain catering to those looking for a weekend escape on the mountain without a car.

The mountain has the highest peak in Southern Vermont, 11 lifts, plus 99 total trails, terrain parks, and glades catering to all levels. There’s also snow tubing, mountain excursions like snowmobile tours, and other activities like snowshoeing, a mountain dinner experience where you ride a snowcat up to your dining point, cross-country skiing, and more!

My favorite part of Stratton Mountain is the charming village, which has shops, restaurants, and 22 lodging options including ski-in ski-out condo rentals that can sleep up to 10 for groups or families, luxury villa rentals , and hotel rooms like this at Long Trail House that has a heated outdoor pool.

This is definitely one of the best ski resorts near NYC for a multi-day trip since they have so much to offer. We love how it accommodates to those who don’t have a car and opens up the opportunity for an entire weekend on the mountain too.

Mount Snow (Vermont)

• Location: West Dover, Vermont in the Green Mountains

I love Southern Vermont for ski resorts near NYC. Just like Stratton Mountain, Mount Snow is another awesome option to make a trip out of. Unfortunately, this option is really only friendly to those who have access to a car which is about a 4 hour drive from the city. However, you can take the Amtrak Vermonter from Penn Station to get within a 40-minute drive from Mount Snow at your drop-off point at Battleboro, but it’s not ideal.

There are over 135 trails across 4 mountain areas, 19 lifts, and 10 terrain parks. Mount Snow is welcoming of all levels with alot of options for those who are intermediate level. For those more advanced, you’ll want to head to North Face where there are plenty of ungroomed trails for those who like a good challenge and Carinthia is tailored for the advanced snowboarders who want to give the rails, pipe, and superpipe a go.

They also have snow tubing at Mount Snow and plenty of dining options lift side. If you’re looking to relax with a view, you can enjoy the dining option at the Main Mountain Summit at 3,600 feet elevation before making your way back down the mountain.

The Grand Summit Resort Hotel is the main slopeside accommodation option for Mount Snow ski resort with multiple room options and the only ski-in ski-out option here. They also have a heated outdoor pool, sauna, and steam room for guests.

There are also several nearby condo rentals and plenty of vacation home rentals, we booked this stunning A-Frame Alpine Cabin that had views of the resort, our own private hot tub, and fireplace, and was less than a 5-minute drive to the resort.

Mountain Creek Resort (New Jersey)

• Car-Free Option: NYC Snow Bus via Sourced Adventures , Comfort Express, Trailways, OvRride

Just a 90-minute drive and you’re at one of the closest skiing options near NYC in New Jersey at Mountain Creek Resort! What’s nice about these super close ski resorts to NYC is that they have multiple car-free options. There are several tour operators and NYC ski buses that transport folks from NYC to Mountain Creek Resort. 

Sourced Adventures has a snow tubing and brew bus option plus a regular snow bus with package options to include lift tickets and other things you might need like lessons and rentals. OvRride offers a regular snow bus day trip options from the city, Trailways offers charters for day trips including package options, and Comfort Express offers round trip bus charters.

They have 44 trails across two different peaks and 10 lifts, plus three terrain parks. They also have snow tubing and night skiing options available. They have trails suitable for all levels whether you’re more advanced or a beginner.

This is more of a day trip option since this ski resort is so close to NYC, but if you do want to make it a multi-day or overnight trip, you can stay at The Appalachian , slopeside at the base of Vernon Peak with a heated outdoor pool and hot tub for guests. Or you can rent a townhome from Black Creek Sanctuary which also has hot tub access.

Camelback Mountain Resort (Pennsylvania)

• Location: Tannersville, Pennsylvania in the Pocono Mountains
• Car-Free Option: NYC Ski Bus via Urban Sherpa Travels, OvRride, Martz Trailways Bus from Port Authority to Mt. Pocono

Another great ski resort near NYC located in the Poconos in Pennsylvania is Camelback Mountain Resort. This ski resort is just a two-hour drive from NYC with multiple NYC ski bus and snow bus options via companies like Urban Sherpa Travels and OvRride . You can also book a bus ticket via Martz Trailways from Port Authority which takes you to Mt. Pocono, then you can call the local taxi company, Mountain Taxi to take you the 14-minute drive to Camelback Resort.

Camelback Mountain Resort is definitely popular among ski resorts near NYC for families because of its indoor waterpark Aquatopia, indoor laser tag, arcade, and other games. 

There are 39 runs, 16 lifts (2 high-speed quads), 2 terrain parks, and snow tubing (including Galactic snow tubing!). Guests love that they have night skiing available on all trails too plus there are runs to suit every level of skier or snowboarder.

This is definitely a family-friendly ski resort that’s worth staying a few days at Camelback Lodge since there are so many activities to entertain kids of all ages from the indoor waterpark to arcades and laser tag and snow tubing after dark all illuminated at the Galactic Snowtubing area.

Jiminy Peak Mountain Resort (Massachusetts)

Another popular ski resort near NYC located in the Berkshires in Western Massachusetts is Jiminy Peak Mountain Resort in Hancock. This New England snow destination is only a 3-hour drive by car, but unfortunately, there aren’t really any car-free options.

What’s cool about this ski resort though is their ski village that has restaurants, shops, places to warm up by a fire, and the option to book one of their vacation rentals to make a getaway out of it with ski-in and ski-out locations.

There are 45 trails, 9 lifts (including high-speed options), 21 trails open for night skiing, and three terrain parks. They also have trails suited for every level of snowboarder and skier which is nice!

It’s worth booking an entire getaway here staying at one of their ski-in and ski-out condo rentals in the mountainside village.

Mohawk Mountain Ski Area (Connecticut)

Another one of the best ski resorts near NYC can be found in Mohawk Mountain State Park in Connecticut. Mohawk Mountain Ski Area is just 2.5 hours away by car, but sadly there aren’t really any shuttles from NYC for those looking for car-free options.

This is the largest and oldest ski resort/area in the state of Connecticut and is said to be the home of snowmaking! They have 26 trails, 9 lifts, night skiing, and snow tubing.

This is more of a basic ski area without all the bells and whistles of larger resorts. They do have a few dining options to fuel up during your day on the slopes.

They do not have lodging on the mountain or at the ski area, so if you want to make a getaway out of it, you can stay in Cornwall which is a short drive to the mountain.

7. Camelback Resort

Escape to the Poconos in Pennsylvania at Camelback Resort, which is home to 49 ski trails, 166 acres of slops, and the 2nd biggest snow tubing park ! It’s right outside NYC in Tannersville, PA and is a perfect trip for families, seasoned vets and everyone in between! 8. Plattekill Mountain

Plattekill Mountain is a nice tucked away option that is more laid-back and less crowded! With 40 trails to choose from, Plattekill’s terrain is one of the most unique on this list, making for hours of fun and challenge! They have season passes available for frequent skiers, or you can buy single lift tickets starting at $69 per person. 9. Jiminy Peak Mountain Resort 

Just over the Massachusetts border lies Jiminy Peak Mountain Resort, a spot with 45 trails, 9 lifts, and 9 black diamonds (6 black, and 3 double black). It’s one of the largest ski resorts in New England, and features views of the soft peaks of Jericho Valley. Alongside normal skiing ( which opens for the season on December 23 ), you can do night skiing , enjoy winter dining , and take lessons . Though skiing is not the first thing that comes to mind when you think of New York, there are more than 50 ski resorts in driving distance from New York City. The further you are willing to drive, the smaller the crowds and the larger the mountains. Don't underestimate New York's vibrant ski culture. Stores in the region have top gear and cost-effective seasonal rental programs for children. 

New Jersey. Though not know for its vertical, NJ makes for an easy day trip. Campgaw is a treat for young learners and their parents. If you can navigate the crowds, Mountain Creek  has the most vertical and the most terrain in proximity to NYC. It also has night skiing and a racing program. Fun fact, many seasoned skiers, including our Founder, got started at Mountain Creek. 

Poconos, PA.   The Poconos are ~1.5 - 2 hours away with many ski areas including Blue Mountain, Shawnee, Camelback, Montage, Jack Frost, Big Boulder and Elk Mountain. Our two favorites are Camelback for families and Elk Mountain for more advanced terrain. 

Catskills, NY.   During the 2020-21 season, our NYC-based team members found themselves spending more time here because of the New York and Vermont quarantine travel restrictions. Located about 2.5 - 3 hours driving from NYC, the Hunter-Tannersville area is home to four “sizable” resorts with unique character —  Belleayre , Windham , Hunter Mountain , and Plattekill. While any of them are doable for a day trip, the area has plenty to keep you well fed and entertained, and we prefer to take a few days and visit several resorts.

​Berkshires and Beyond. For a long weekend, the Berkshires stretching across western New England are home to Butternut and Berkshire East. Catamount , located about 2.5 hours driving from NYC on the border with Massachusetts in Hillsdale, NY, is the closest of the Berkshires, and has great learning facilities, steeper areas and terrain parks.  The Connecticut ski areas of Ski Sundown, Mohawk, Mt. Southington, and Powder Ridge are also very family friendly.

Southern Vermont & Upstate New York .   Four hours driving distance from NYC is where things start to get really good. Choose from Whiteface or  Gore Mountain in the Adirondacks of upstate New York, or Stratton , Magic Mountain , Mount Snow, and Bromley in southern Vermont. Going just a little further into Vermont also opens access to Okemo and Killington .

Northern Vermont.   If you have the time and are feeling adventurous, the six hour car ride to northern Vermont will take you to some of New England’s finest ski resorts including  Sugarbush , Stowe , and Smugglers’ Notch . With steep runs, tight trees, and buckets of lake effect snow these places can even compete with major resorts out west.

Mountain Creek, NJ

Best for Proximity to NYC with Vertical

Travel Time: ~1.25-1.5 hours from NYC

Overview .   It's not hard to find skiers who hate on Mountain Creek. It's crowded, wild, icy, expensive, and filled with human cannonballs, they say. They say all of this because it's all true.

But they are missing a set of immutable facts: Mountain Creek is a huge, modern resort, with high-speed lifts, a dirt-cheap season pass, 1,000 vertical feet, outstanding snowmaking, and proximity to the largest city in America.

A bit of history : Mountain Creek's modern infrastructure is partially a function of a brief ownership by Intrawest. Though Intrawest sold the resort long before morphing into Alterra Mountain Company, the current owners, Snow Operating, continue to invest heavily. Today's resort is the combination of two historic ski areas — Vernon Valley and Great Gorge.

Bottom line , understand what Mountain Creek is and where it is, and plan around that. This is not some hidden secret - it's the closest large ski area to the largest city in America. You're going to have to share it. If you have a full day, go to the Catskills. Mountain Creek is best experienced in doses.

Getting To : Drive; Mountain Creek is ~50 miles and ~1 hour from the George Washington Bridge. The most reliable route is NJ-4 west to NJ-208 north to I-287 south to NJ-23 north, then a right on Stockholm Vernon Rd (County Road 515). Then a left on NJ-94 south and the resort is on the left. Parking is on the right. Keep going past the first parking lot and turn right into South Lodge, two miles down the road.

Special Programs : Snow Operating invented the Terrain-Based Learning system, a progressive teaching method that dozens of resorts use.

Also, the cabriolet, an open-air stand-up gondola, is one of the silliest lifts in America

Though there is nothing overly steep, the runs are long and interesting, especially before the crowds arrive

One of the largest footprints in the Northeast, measuring nearly two miles along highway 94

Night skiing is available every day and on all of the terrain. This is one of our favorite ways to visit this resort in the spring

Top-notch snowmaking capabilities. Coverage is 100% of the mountain, more than making up for what is probably less than 2 feet of snow annually

South Peak is a giant terrain park; every run can translate into endless combinations of jumps and rails

INSIDER TIPS

When the line at the Cabriolet is long, you can sometimes ski right onto the triple chair — beware though, the triple is the slowest lift on the mountain

The Vernon Peak parking lot is one of the most congested and ill-conceived on the East Coast. For Vernon Peak, drive another 200 yards and turn right on Sand Hill Road, where the massive parking lot on the left is usually sparse; your walk up to the bridge over highway 94 will also be much shorter

South Peak doesn't open until noon on weekdays; get some corduroy on your lunch break if you live nearby

When lines are long at South Peak, the Granite Peak chair is often a far-less-congested alternative

Elk Mountain, PA

Best for Natural Snowfall

Travel Time: ~3 hours drive from NYC

Overview .   Elk Mountain's slogan used to be "It's like skiing in Vermont, without the drive!". That might make some Vermont locals angry, but it's a fair assessment for one of Pennsylvania's best mountains. The mountain is ~3 hours drive from NYC, making it doable for a day trip. Elk doesn't offer on-mountain lodging if you're planning on staying the night, but does list a variety of properties located near the ski area . Elk has a different feel from the established resorts located closer to New York City. Elk is best suited for intermediate to advanced skiers that are looking to push their skills past the hills of the Poconos. With 1,000' of vertical, decent natural snowfall, and steeps- you might just feel like you're skiing in Vermont.

Getting To : Drive, parking is free; Take I-80 W to I-380 N to I-81N. Take Exit 206 from I-81N to PA-374 E. Take PA-374 E to Elk Mountain.

Special Programs : Buy a season pass as early as possible. Elk's season pass rates increase once the season starts.

There are plenty of ski areas closer to NYC

The mountain is better-suited for intermediate and advanced skiers

The are no lodging options at the resort

Challenging and fun terrain await you at Elk. You won't find trails like this anywhere else in PA

Avoid the crowds. The extra hour's drive from NYC is well worth it to thin out the crowds that you will find at Camelback, Shawnee or Jack Frost

Camelback, PA

Best for Convenience & Family Fun

Travel Time: ~1.5 hours from NYC

Overview .   Camelback Mountain is by no means the largest ski resort in the region, but it's plenty to keep you entertained for the day. The resort offers lesson options for skiers and riders of all abilities. The waterpark is also a big draw and Camelback can get busy during peak hours. Enjoy empty slopes on their vast night-skiing terrain.

Camelback features 800' of vertical, 39 trails, and 100% coverage for snowmaking and night-skiing. Advanced skiers will have fun carving despite the short vertical. Beginners and Intermediates are given a variety of routes, including the resort's longest trail 'Nile Mile'.

Camelback is within a day-trip distance of NYC, but guests may want to stay longer. The resort has several lodging options, and an indoor waterpark to keep the kiddos happy after a day on the slopes.

Getting To : Drive, general parking is $10/day; Take I-80 W to PA-715 N (Exit 299), Take PA-715 N to Sullivan Trail to Camelback Rd.

Special Programs : Stop by the local ski/board shops on your way to the mountain. They have more affordable rentals and sometimes even offer discounted lift tickets.

Crowds. Camelback is no secret and crowds can clog Camelback's beginner and intermediate terrain

Lift tickets are pricey on the weekends. An average lift ticket will cost around $80

The natural snowfall at Camelback doesn't compare to resorts further north

Camelback is one of the closest ski resorts to NYC at only 1.5 hours away by car (~85 miles)

The ski school program at Camelback is suited for any skiing ability

High-speed quad chairlifts prevent the lift lines from getting too long

Night Skiing here is a fun way to get more turns and add variety to après

Hunter Mountain, NY

Best for Steeper Terrain

Travel Time: ~2.5-3 hours from NYC

Hunter might be the poster child for the statement "If you can ski the East, you can ski anywhere." The mountain features a 1,600-foot vertical drop and offers a wide range of terrain, although the steepest runs, such as Westway and Annapurna — only open after sustained snowfall. Its variable weather patterns and conditions keep you on your toes, but its excellent teaching program can prepare you in spades. 

The Hunter-Tannersville area is an increasingly attractive place to visit, with new cuisine such as Prospect and lodging such as Scribner's Catskill Lodge, opening each season. Hunter is on the  Epic Pass , convenient for those in the New York area who also enjoy skiing out West and/or further North. 

Getting To : 2.5- 3 hours from NYC: take I-87 to exit 20 then NY-32A to Hunter Mountain. Parking is free. There are also regular buses for day trips from NYC.

Hunter's proximity to NYC means it can be very crowded on the weekends. Lift lines can be long and trails may even feel crowded

Grooming is done daily, but the volume of skiers quickly makes that a thing of the past. Frequent rain and sleet can slick up the place

Vermont quality runs, but without the Vermont drive

The Hunter-Tannersville area is undergoing a renaissance with increasing options for dining, après and off-mountain activities for the whole family

With snow-making coverage on 100% of its terrain, you are guaranteed to get your runs in no matter how bad the season. Fun fact, Huner Mountain was the first ski resort in New York State to install snow-making

Top Trails. Beginner — Mossy Brook; Intermediate — Belt Parkway; Advanced — Hellgate

For the kids.  Head over to Scribner's Catskill Lodge to enjoy the ice skating rink, beautiful grounds and fire pit with s'mores to roast

Favorite Dining. Prospect  for locally sourced cuisine in a spectacular setting 

Favorite Après Spot.  With hundreds of beers and cheeses, Last Chance Tavern also has live music and the best atmosphere around

Where to Stay. For a relaxing, cozy stay,  Scribner's Catskill Lodge  is directly across the street from the resort. A little further afield with a more boutique feel, consider the Deer Mountain Inn

Windham, NY

Best for Family Weekend Getaways

Travel Time: ~3 hours from NYC

Many New Yorkers have learned to ski at Windham, and it's easy to see why: this is a family-friendly resort with good terrain and snowmaking covering 97% of the runs — all a straight shot from various points in the state. The base has been spruced up in recent years and feels pretty spiffy (it also features a couple of cool food trucks parked right off the lifts, always a welcome sight). The layout is easy to navigate and well marked, making it difficult to wander into trouble, especially since the double blacks are all tucked away on the west side of the mountain. Windham is also part of the Ikon Pass, offering 7 days on the full pass and 5 on the base pass.

A quarter mile from the resort, the Windham Mountain Adventure Park offers tubing and age-appropriate snowmobiles where kid can ride on an oval track.

Getting To : Three hours from NYC: take I-87 to exit 21 then NY-23 to Windham Mountain. Parking is free. There are also regular buses for day trips from NYC.

Special Programs : Windham offers an introduction to Alpine touring for $50. The guided session includes Rossignol equipment and an uphill travel ticket. Children and teenagers (until 19) more interested in speed should check out the racing program ($2,299-$2,499).

For great convenience, load your lift card or pass with "Snow Dough" and use it to pay for anything on-mountain.

Weekends can be a mad house, though Windham remains more chill than Hunter

All trail names start with W so pay close attention to the trail map if you're new to Windham

Ski Butternut, MA

Best for Families with Young Children

Overview .   Ski Butternut (also simply known as "Butternut") is a beautiful, smaller ski resort in the heart of the Berkshires. Still privately owned and operated, Butternut has a distinctly "family" feel - their slogan is "Where Families Go to Play in the Snow!" With 22 trails, there's enough variety to satisfy all but those who only want to pound black diamonds all day. In other words, it's a perfect ski area for a family with young kids. "Never-evers," beginners and intermediates will enjoy Butternut's mellow trails. With snow-making on 100% of it's terrain, there's usually plenty of snow. Terrain park enthusiasts will love the Twisted Terrain Park. Butternut is just a 5 minute drive into Great Barrington, MA where you can find plenty of shopping along with inns and Airbnb options. 

Special Programs : Ski Butternut during weekdays for only $25 . Uphilling is permitted in select areas at specific times , details here .

Getting To : Almost equidistant from Boston & New York City, set your GPS to "Butternut Basin" and enjoy a beautiful ~2.5-3 hour drive. Parking is free and the walk from your car to the lifts is short.

This is not the spot for steeps and challenges, but most people will enjoy Butternut's 1,000' vertical and fun trails

As with any smaller ski resorts, there's not as much variety in food offerings as at larger resorts

With top-to-bottom snow-making, the trails tend to be in good shape, even when the New England weather does not cooperate

Designated easy area for "never-evers," is secluded from faster skiers; parents can relax knowing the kids are safe here

Top notch lessons for skiing and snowboarding in both group and private arrangements

Best for Vertical Drop without Lift Lines

Travel Time: ~1.5-2 hours drive from NYC

Overview .   Catamount is a solid ski area in the Berkshires and offers some steeper terrain generally more characteristic of Southern Vermont. Located near the New York-Massachusetts state line, it's an easy drive from New York City and its surrounding suburbs, making for a doable day trip. Catamount's beginner, intermediate and advanced terrain is spread out well across the mountain and it has ~1,000' of vertical. Night-skiing is also available.

Catamount is owned by the same family that owns Berkshire East; the new owners have been making significant investments to upgrade the resort, most notably, adding 200 snow guns and a new base lodge.

Special Programs : The Summit Pass pass works at Catamount, Berkshire East and tamer, Bosquet. Indy Pass upgrade available.

Getting To : Depending on your location, you'll take either the NY State Thruway or the Taconic State Parkway with a drive time of ~2.5 hours. Park for free and walk no more than 100 yards. 

Catamount may feel a bit intimidating to novices; we prefer other resorts in the area for those just starting out

This is a real ski area with a full range of terrain suitable for all ability levels, including night skiing!

Gore Mountain, NY

Best for Intermediates Looking to Progress

Travel Time: ~4 hours from NYC

Gore Mountain is the biggest resort by acreage in New York state, and easily holds its own in the Northeast. Yet this spot in the Adirondacks remains under the radar and draws about the same crowds as Whiteface (i.e., none on weekdays), and a lot less than its marquee-name neighbors in Vermont. Add a low-key vibe, good terrain, comparatively cheap lift tickets, and you have a hill worthy of affection.

Experts will enjoy the fairly tight glades as well as the 'Rumor and Lies', a pair of steep double-black faces. But at heart Gore, which is spread over seven areas, is paradise for intermediates, with many long, wide cruisers that help build skills and confidence (more advanced skiers will love ripping down those groomers, especially on weekdays when the trails are empty and you can carve big turns).

The hill is fairly easy to navigate and well marked — you aren't likely to end up in tricky spots by mistake — and the return area is wide enough to avoid traffic jams. On chilly days, make a pit stop at the Straight Brook Lodge, off of the Straight Brook chair: It's the old gondola unloading station, converted into a warming shelter with vending machines and bathrooms.

Getting To : Located in North Creek, NY, four hours from NYC and 90 minutes from Albany, Gore is 20 minutes from exit 23 on I-87. There is plenty of free parking (with shuttle buses from the more remote lots to the base lodge) as well as premium for $20/day.

Special Programs : Fun programs for midweek adult skiers include Ladies Escape (Wednesdays) and Secret Society of Skiers (Thursdays). A season-long program for kids 7-12 features four-hour sessions (three hours during Covid) every weekend.

Not only is the SKI3 season pass valid at Gore, Belleayre and Whiteface, but it includes discounts on dining, retail and repairs, as well as one free non-holiday ticket and one half-price non-holiday ticket for friends.

Gore has the most skiable terrain in NY state with 428 acres and a vertical drop of 2,537 feet

Laidback, no-pretense vibe, with matching reasonable prices for food and rentals, and large areas to boot up, complete with baskets and hooks for bag storage .

Easy access off I-87 — in many ways it's easier to get to for most New Yorkers than southern Vermont resorts

Weekday crowds are non-existent

Beautiful scenery with no commercial developments or lodgings

We break down each of these ski resorts near New York City including the different amenities they offer, lodging options including if they have ski-in and ski-out styles of accommodation, on-site dining, what type of trails they have, and more to help plan your next ski trip in the New York area a breeze. Something to keep in mind, skiing in Upstate New York, the season typically starts sometime around Thanksgiving/end of November and continues through March. Each year it varies as that’s in Mother Nature’s hands and with climate change, its getting a little less predictable.

If you’re looking at ski resorts near NYC in Vermont (Southern Vermont ski resorts are around a 4-5 hour drive from NYC)  their season is typically a bit longer starting a bit earlier in November and sometimes going all the way through to May!

Best Ski Resorts Near NYC

Hunter mountain.

Go with  Hunter Mountain Resort if you like a mountain with a family-owned feel. Vail Resorts bought it a while back, but they’ve done an amazing job maintaining the original feel of the resort. This welcoming atmosphere is why Hunter Mountain has been a mainstay for the Catskills in winter since the 1950s and some of the best skiing near NYC.

Hunter Mountain offers some of the closest skiing to NYC, just a little over two -hour’s drive by car from the city ! You can also take an NYC ski bus to Hunter Mountain .

Several shuttle companies cater to the resort, like OvrRide , which picks you up from stops in Manhattan, Queens, and Brooklyn. Just make sure to double check dates, because none of the companies offer shuttle services 7 days a week. 

Hunter Mountain is known for catering to more experienced skiers, but there are more than enough slopes for beginners to have a great time. Hunter has 3,200 feet of diverse terrain with wide trails. You can also try out 2 different terrain parks for all skill levels with jumps, rails, and more. And there’s a full tube park and a year-round zipline.

A big draw to Hunter Mountain is their new Skyline airlift. They also have several magic carpet lifts, with the bunny slopes having their own dedicated lift. This is a super popular resort and the number of lifts really helps with lines, especially on the weekends when Hunter is the busiest! And if you need to rent gear, the rental shop has everything you’ll need for skiing and snowboarding.

If you’re looking for some of the closest skiing to NYC with lodging, this is a great option with ski-in/ski-out condos and villas . There are several different eateries onsite. The town Hunter has a pizzeria and 2 bars, as well as a ski-in/ski-out restaurant at the top of the mountain. And on the weekends, the resort often hosts great local food trucks and live music.

Also, check out the town of Tannersville nearby which is full of restaurants, shops, antique stores, and more in their colorful western looking downtown, definitely one of the most charming towns in the Catskills and less than 10 minutes away from Hunter Mountain if you have your own car!

Windham Mountain

While Hunter might be the best of the best in the East,  Windham Mountain  is another great ski resort in the Catskills! It’s less crowded than Hunter and it’s super family-friendly with lots of activities just for the kids.

Think about a visit to Windham if you’re a beginner or intermediate level. You’ll find excellent trails for both groups (plus black-diamond and double-black-diamond trails as well). Besides skiing, Windham also has ice skating and 6 terrain parks, each with its own unique features. Start in the beginner park and graduate upward through each one!

Windham is one of the best ski resorts near NYC at around 2.5 to 3 hours away by car . You can also take Amtrak to Hudson and get a car to take you the last 40 miles to the resort. Or there are also several NYC ski bus options .  NYC Snow Bus  offers different ticket packages for Windham that include things like gear rental and even ski lessons at the resort. 

While there isn’t much of a base camp at Windham Mountain, you can enjoy a few quality amenities. There’s the Alpine Spa, which offers a range of massages, skin and body treatments, as well as yoga. And there are also quite a few different restaurants at both the base camp and the mountainside. There’s everything from a tavern and a sushi bar to a waffle hut next to the lifts!

Whisper Creek Condos is a beautiful ski-in/ski-out lodge at the resort (better for groups as they can sleep 8-10), or you can find some top-notch hotels just a few minutes away from the mountain like Hotel Vienna which has an indoor spa and pool too. And if you’re staying at the condos, there’s a complimentary shuttle that picks you up from the Windham bus stop when you arrive.

Stratton Mountain Resort

Vermont offers some of the best skiing near NYC and on the East Coast, including at  Stratton Mountain Resort . Located near Manchester in Southern Vermont, you can drive there in about 4 hours from New York City . Or catch the  Hampton Stratton Jitney  from NYC. Then you can sit back and enjoy a scenic 4-hour ride!

Come to Stratton Mountain Resort if you want the full luxury ski resort experience with a beautiful ski village. This is the perfect getaway with a variety of restaurants and shopping options, plus the village is charming. Everything you’ll need is in the village, including the rental shop. They have a smooth gear rental system that’s easy to use.

Stratton Mountain is family-friendly and great for skiers of all skill levels across the north and east faces of the mountain. You can join group classes or book a private lesson. And besides skiing, there are tons of things to do, including snow tubing, snowmobile tours of the mountain, and yoga classes in the snow!

At the Nordic Center, you can join a group for snowshoeing hikes or cross-country skiing, or rent a fat bike and hit the trails. There’s also nighttime skiing and snowmobiling, and you can book a romantic dinner for two after taking a snowcat to your mountainside restaurant.

You’ll find 21 different lodge options at Stratton, including high-end 4-star hotels, cozy B&Bs, condos , and villas , each with its own amenities. Choose from a stay in the village, in the valley with a shuttle service to the lifts, or at one of the ski-in/ski-out locations. We really like the Long Trail House at Stratton Mountain Resort .

Gore Mountain

Gore Mountain is the largest ski resort in New York with over 100 trails over 4 different peaks and great views of the Adirondacks! But what makes it some of the best skiing in New York is that, despite its size, Gore Mountain is known for its warm, laid-back atmosphere! While it’s about a 4-hour drive from NYC , it’s worth the trip! You can also take the NYC Snow Bus when it’s available.

The tallest mountain peak at Gore is 3,600 feet in elevation. On a clear day, you can see the Green Mountains in Vermont and even all the way to Canada! It’s such a massive ski resort that it’s divided into 7 different ski areas, each one offering a different experience.

And with a busy resort like Gore Mountain, you hardly have to wait in lines! That’s because of the dozens of gondolas, magic carpets, and chair lifts, getting everyone up the slopes fast.

Besides amazing skiing and different terrains, there are a whopping 28 different glades and 8 unique terrain parks available to all skill levels. Gore Mountain has two different base camps, including the Ski Bowl base lodge, which was the original ski base almost 90 years ago. And you have access to four different lodges, including a mountaintop lodge, where you can sit by the fire and enjoy a hot meal.

Gore Mountain has a few different areas for nighttime skiing and snowboarding. Snowshoeing is also a popular pastime at Gore with snowshoe trails along most of the ski slopes. And the rental shop offers snowshoes and cross-country ski gear, besides the usual ski and snowboarding gear. And if you need it, they offer tuning and repairs.

Garnet Hill Lodge is one of the best options to stay nearby within a 16-minute drive. The rooms offer gorgeous views of the mountains with their own trail system for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing plus a restaurant on site. This is definitely one of the best places to enjoy a winter getaway in the Adirondacks .

Mount Snow is the heart of West Dover, Vermont . This popular ski resort is considered some of the best skiing near NYC because it caters to skiers of all skill levels. Visitors love the manageable setup with all trails leading back to the base camp. This is actually where we spent a wonderful winter getaway in Southern Vermont and I, as a beginner, and Scott, who is more advanced both really enjoyed this mountain.

Most people drive the 4-hours to Mount Snow from New York City by car. If you want to get there without a car, you could take the  Amtrak Vermonter  from Penn Station to Battleboro, Vermont. It’ll take a little less than 6 hours and then you’ll need to book a car or take the local bus for the 40-minute ride from there to the ski resort.

The diverse skiing at Mount Snow is spread across three ski areas and over three mountain faces, plus 19 different lifts. And there’s even an additional mountain face with a total of 10 individual terrain parks across 100 acres! You can also book lessons or go snow tubing.

Relax with massages and skin treatments at the Naturespa inside the Grand Summit Resort Hotel at the Main Base Village. If you need to thaw out, grab a hot meal at one of the restaurants to be found at the base or along the lifts. There’s also the Summit Lodge Café at the Main Mountain Summit with amazing views from 3,600 feet!

Mount Snow features an impressive number of properties where you can stay, including the Grand Summit Resort Hotel , or a variety of condos, villas, and townhome villages. Many of them are slope-side for a great ski-in/ski-out option or benefit from a regular shuttle service to the Main Base.

We had the best A-Frame cabin with a hot tub and views of the slopes about a 5-minute drive away from the resort. We would 10/10 stay here again, it was perfect and it felt romantic and secluded. Or check out more romantic cabins in Vermont near all the best slopes too!

Whiteface Mountain

While  Whiteface Mountain is technically over 5 hour drive from NYC , it’s worth mentioning because it was part of the 1932 & 1980 Winter Olympics! You won’t regret spending a weekend in the beautiful Lake Placid nearby. And while Whiteface Mountain doesn’t have any lodges to stay at, you can simply take the 20-minute shuttle from Lake Placid.

This is possibly the best skiing in upstate New York for experienced skiers. Whiteface Mountain is one of the tallest mountains in the Adirondacks and the resort is known for The Slides, the largest vertical drop on the East Coast!

During the 1980 Olympics, Whiteface Mountain hosted six of the alpine events. Today, you can run the same trails as the best sportsmen in the world!

Every season, Whiteface Mountain offers a special Uphill Pass. You’ll wake up early to trek up the slopes, watch the sunrise over the mountains, and then spend the morning skiing. It’s a must! The resort also has a large terrain park for skiers and snowboarders. And while Whiteface is largely focused on skilled skiers, beginners and intermediates will find things to do in each area at the resort.

The two top-notch rental shops at Whiteface are you’re one-stop-shop for all things gear-related. You can rent ski and snowboarding equipment, or have your gear tuned up or repaired. And you can rent lockers for the day, overnight, or for the season.

For the best places to stay near Whiteface Mountain in Lake Placid, check out Whiteface Lodge which also has a heated pool and is a stately 4.5 star resort or Mirror Lake Inn , which is a AAA Four-Diamond hotel right on Mirror Lake in Lake Placid. Mountain Creek Resort

At around 90-minutes away from NYC by car, Mountain Creek Resort in New Jersey is a great option when you’re looking for the closest and best skiing near NYC! There’s also an NYC ski bus to Mountain Creek Resort through Sourced Adventures  that offers pick-ups in Manhattan on the weekends.

Though Mountain Creek is a smaller ski area with only 44 trails across two peaks, it’s a popular place, especially on the weekends! You can book skiing and snowboarding lessons for all ages. Plus, there’s a full terrain park on another peak with enough to do to keep everyone busy, from beginners to skilled skiers and riders!

This ski area offers both daytime and nighttime skiing, as well as snowboarding and snow tubing. This isn’t just a winter getaway either, all year round, you can get in the air by riding the park’s zipline course or the alpine coaster! Mountain Creek Resort is also utilized by the surrounding townships for middle school and high school ski racing. And the resort hosts Special Olympic events, so look out for opportunities to attend events throughout the season.

Make a weekend of it and stay at the slope-side Appalachian Hotel. They have 1- and 2-bedroom suites steps away from the lifts. Or for more space, stay across the street at Mountain Creek’s gated Black Creek Sanctuary which has beautiful, spacious townhomes for rent. And if you get hungry, there are 2 restaurants in site.

Plattekill Mountain

As one of the last family-owned, locally-owned ski mountains in the East,  Plattekill Mountain offers a rare experience and some of the best skiing in New York. It’s a smaller ski mountain with 38 trails and just a 1,100-foot drop. Plattekill Mountain has gathered a crew of committed patrons who come back year after year because of the rugged, old-school feel of the ski mountain!

People love that Plattekill Mountain is a bit off the beaten path, and not like the bigger, modern ski resorts. If you’re driving, it’s about 3 hours north of New York City by car in the Catskills. And if you need transportation, Plattekill Mountain also has different shuttle packages from NYC available through Urban Sherpa Travel  from 2 pick-up sites in Manhattan.

This mountain offers something for everyone. For more experienced skiers and snowboarders, Plattekill Mountain is no-frill with long, narrow forest paths (tricky for a beginner snowboarder like me). And even though there are only four lifts, there are hardly ever any wait times! Also, Plattekill Mountain is known for being family-oriented and accessible to children and new skiers.

You can book group lessons or private lessons, or just enjoy the old-school atmosphere of the lodge. There’s also a classic après ski bar there if you need to warm up and refuel. And snow tubing is a huge deal here with a great tubing park! You can buy tubing tickets in 2-hour increments that include your snow tube and a lift ticket.

If you need gear, there’s a rental shop but don’t expect anything flashy! That’s part of Plattekill’s charm, though. Everything is worn in and a little beat up but in the best way. 

While there’s no lodging here, we highly recommend taking advantage of any of the nearby towns in the Catskills to stay in. Thunder Ridge Ski Area

Thunder Ridge Ski Area is the closest skiing to NYC, being only an hour away from the city in Patterson, New York. It’s the perfect winter day trip with a Ski Train  from Grand Central Station . You’ll arrive in Patterson, where the free Thunder Ridge ski shuttle will take you the rest of the way! It’s available 7 days a week all season, but during the week you’ll just have to call ahead so the shuttle will come to get you.

With such a great location, Thunder Ridge Ski Area is a quality place to learn to ski, especially if you’re coming from the city. It’s perfect for new skiers, with 22 fun trails that are great for progressing. They also have a variety of lessons available for different skill levels, including racing programs. Thunder Ridge offers a large learning area and great green and blue trails. But more experienced skiers can also enjoy quality black diamond trails on the mountain.

Most of the trails are open for nighttime skiing and snowboarding, and there’s a mountainside terrain park as well. Plus, there are a good number of lifts and magic carpets for the size of the mountain. Visit the Ski Shop to purchase any gear you’ll need, and you’ll find snacks inside the lodge. 

Belleayre Mountain

Another great option for ski resorts near NYC, Belleayre Mountain  is another quality day trip with some of the best skiing near NYC for intermediates. It’s just 2.5 to 3 hours from New York City by car along the Catskills Scenic Byway. On the drive, you’ll pass through some of the prettiest towns in the Catskills !

Located just outside of Fleischmanns, Belleayre is a popular state-owned ski mountain known for its excellent prices. There aren’t any places to stay and the food options are limited, but you’ll find several small towns just a few minutes drive away with tons of places to choose from.

This mountain is great for beginners with the entire bottom half featuring tons of green trails. Most of the glades and open trails are intermediate, but there are also diamond and double-diamond trails near the summit. Belleayre Mountain also offers lots of wooded trails for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, and terrain parks for snowboarding.

While you’re at Belleayre, you’ll find three different lodges for your enjoyment, one each at the base, mid-mountain, and near the 3,400-foot summit. Each lodge has a small café, while the Overlook Lodge at the summit has a BBQ restaurant. Also, the shop at Base Camp doubles as a gift shop and a gear shop. You can also rent lockers there, or get basic tuning and repairs done on your equipment. 

We highly recommend staying in and exploring all the things to do in Phoenicia while you’re here if you’re doing an overnight trip. You can find one of the most unique things to do in the Catskills at Emerson Resort & Spa , which is one of the best resorts in the area. This is where you can find the world’s largest kaleidoscope!

Or for one of our favorite romantic winter getaways in Upstate New York , splurge on an Alpine Bathing Suite at Urban Cowboy Lodge in Big Indian, New York. Their rooms and lodge are dreamy with every detail carefully thought out and designed. Not to mention you’ll want to soak your muscles in the clawfoot tubs overlooking the wintery wonderland outside.

Camelback Mountain Resort

If you prefer a sparkly resort experience with tons of different amenities, go with the famous  Camelback Mountain Resort outside of Tannersville, Pennsylvania in the heart of the Poconos. Camelback Mountain is known for its adventure park and indoor waterpark that’s fun for families. But the company also offers one of the best ski resorts near NYC right there in the Poconos!

It only takes 90-minutes to drive to Camelback Mountain Resort by car , or you can take an NYC ski bus .  Urban Sherpa Travels offers a 2-hour ride from two Manhattan locations. Make it a day trip, or book one of the luxurious suites or condos at the Camelback Lodge just steps from the lifts!

On the mountain, everyone can enjoy 39 trails for beginner, intermediate, and experienced skiers and snowboarders. And Camelback Mountain has the biggest snow tubing park in Pennsylvania with 42 dedicated tubing trails. You can choose from 4 different lifts, including one right outside the resort’s ski-in/ski Trails End Bar & Grill.

Book lessons at the mountain base or visit the rental shop at the resort for skiing and snowboarding equipment. They also offer lockers and gear tune-ups. And what’s fun about Camelback is that when you’re ready to get out of the cold, you have tons of fun things to do indoors. There are arcades, escape rooms, VR games, free access to the waterpark, and a range of different restaurants you can enjoy.

This is an ideal family getaway with all the activities for the kids including the waterpark, games, and entertainment options when staying at Camelback Lodge . Perfect for a family trip and a ski resort near NYC. 

Jiminy Peak Mountain Resort

Jiminy Peak Mountain Resort is another year-round resort located only 3-hours away from New York City by car . They have a wonderful location in the Berkshires close to Pittsfield, Massachusetts , and offer another great option for some of the best skiing near NYC. Jiminy Peak Mountain Resort is popular for its beautiful village center that features shops, restaurants, a bonfire area, a ski school, a children’s center, and ski-in/ski-out vacation rentals.

The mountain boasts an elevation of 2,380 feet with 45 trails and a 1,115-foot vertical drop. You’ll find variety among the 9 lifts, and trails offer both daytime and nighttime skiing and snowboarding for more time on the slopes. Plus, they have a pleasant mix of beginner, intermediate, advanced, and difficult trails so there’s something for everyone in your group.

At Jiminy Peak, you also have 3 terrain parks, as well as fun areas at the base where you can sit around the bonfire. And there are a variety of different lesson plans, including beginner lessons, kids lessons, group lessons, and advanced lessons. You’ll be directed by caring, knowledgeable instructors so you know you’ll be ready when you get on the snow.

It’s worth mentioning that the resort has a quality retail shop at the resort with winter clothing, accessories, and all the skiing and snowboarding gear you’ll need. You’ll also find gear for rent, and they do boot fitting and adjustments as well! Or you can visit the Just Jiminy gift shop for branded souvenirs.

In the village and mountainside, Jiminy Peak Mountain Resort caters to guests with a range of restaurants, pubs, and grab-and-go cafes, as well as a pantry market for lodge guests.

And if you’re staying overnight, there’s a spacious all-suite hotel inside the mountain village. It has the classic amenities you’d expect at a hotel! Or choose from 3 different ski-in/ski-out vacation rental villages across the base of the mountain.

Catamount Mountain Resort

Literally sitting on the southern Massachusetts/New York border is more skiing in upstate New York. Benefiting from the peaks of the Adirondacks and the lush Berkshire forests,  Catamount Mountain Resort  is just 2-hours from New York City by car . 

This is the place to come if you’re looking for an affordable, laid-back ski park without all the amenities of the bigger parks. Everyone comes here to get on the trails and that’s it! Still, there’s great support from expert ski instructors. In fact, Catamount is known for being family-friendly with children’s lessons and activities.

Choose from the classic menu of lessons for both adults and children, including group and private lessons. But Catamount also has season-long programs including women-only groups and adaptable programs for skiers with different physical needs. We love that the beginner trails are all grouped together. There are a handful of black-diamond and double-black-diamond trails, as well. However, without much vertical, this ski resort isn’t going to challenge an advanced skier.

You can also enjoy two terrain parks and nighttime skiing for all skill levels. And if you love snow tubing, this is the place to be! At the base lodge, there’s a full-service rental shop for day- and season-long rentals of skiing and snowboarding gear. There’s also a separate tuning shop, and you can purchase gear and apparel at the Gear Box.

Plus, if you fall in love with Catamount, they also offer high-end and basic seasonal lockers with perks like boot dryers and family lockers for up to 4 people. And for an overnight stay, Catamount has two different lodges with cozy rooms just minutes from the base lodge and the lifts.

Mohawk Mountain Ski Area

Located inside the sprawling Mohawk Mountain State Park near Cornwall, Connecticut is the  Mohawk Mountain Ski Area . You can enjoy the scenic views and over 100 acres of skiable mountainside just a 2.5-hour drive from the city ! This small resort has been serving up some of the best skiing near NYC since the 1940s. And a fun fact is that Mohawk is where snowmaking was invented!

With a summit of only 1,600 feet, Mohawk is a smaller mountain with 26 trails and 8 lifts, perfect for a day trip or weekend ski trip. The ski area is popular with skiers and snowboarders from the tri-state area. Come here if you love nighttime skiing and snow tubing. You can also take lessons or visit the historic mountainside Pine Lodge.

Mohawk Mountain is a basic, casual ski area without a ton of amenities, but you can find a rental and repair shop in the Main Lodge. They offer both day- and season-long rentals for skiing and snowboarding gear. And when you get hungry, there are 2 full-service restaurants, one at the Main Base Lodge and one at the mid-mountain Pine Lodge. They’re perfect for fueling up or taking a mid-day break from all the fun!

Mount Peter Ski Area

Another super convenient ski area close to the city is Mount Peter Ski Area . You’ll find it near the New York/New Jersey border in the Hudson Valley . It’s just an hour’s drive from Manhattan , but you can also easily t ake an NJ Transit bus to Warwick if you don’t have a car. Just hop on at Port Authority and enjoy the ride. In Warwick, you would need to get a car the remaining mile to the ski area.

This is another rare family-owned New York ski area and longest running ski area in the state as well. Mount Peter is a small mountain that’s great for all skill levels. They offer free beginner courses for skiing and snowboarding! There are 13 different trails, including 3 black-diamond trails. And there’s a fun tube run and an outdoor ice-skating rink.

Mount Peter is also super family-friendly, offering a variety of kid-centered lessons, including family lessons and programs for children as young as 3 years. There are also full-season racing programs for all ages that you can sign up for or attend a race!

At the Main Lodge, you can visit the gift shop, pick up gear rentals, and enjoy a beer and piping hot meals at Pete’s Pub. And while there are no overnight digs at this casual little ski area, you’ll find several great B&Bs and hotels just minutes away in Warwick and Greenwood Lake.

Can I leave my stuff on the bus?

Yes! That said, the bus will be locked and parked away from the mountain during the day so you’ll not be able to access it.

Are there lockers at the mountain?

Yes! They generally cost about $8

How long is the trip?

The trip day in total is 12-13 hours long.

Is lunch included?

No, lunch is not included in your ticket. There are multiple affordable food options at the mountain, which can be found at the base lodge or summit lodge.

What should I bring?

• Ski Clothes or warm layers. It’s important to bundle up for skiing and to wear waterproof clothing. Ski pants and ski jackets are ideal. Don’t have ski clothes? You can rent clothing in advance.
• Snacks for the road. It’s an early morning, so make sure you bring some breakfast with you for the bus ride up, and snacks for the ride home.
• Water bottle. Always important to stay hydrated throughout the day!
• Phone charger. Your phone will drain a good amount of battery for the day, so make sure you have a charger in case of any emergencies.
• Skis and Snowboard IF you have your own. We have plenty of room under the bus if you want to bring your own gear.
• Spare Change. Skiing burns A LOT of calories, meaning you’ll be hungry at some point during the day. Bring some cash or credit along so you can refuel on food at the lodge or treat yourself to a beer.

When do we leave the mountain?

We leave Mountain Creek at 4:00pm.

Can I take the bus up on one day and the bus back on another?

Unfortunately, bus transportation is only valid for use within a single day. This is to ensure that all of our customers have available seats for the return journey to NYC on any given day.

Can I drive myself?

Unfortunately, driving yourself is prohibited. We do this for logistical and liability reasons.

Can I bring my kids on the trip?

Unfortunately, no. This is an 18+ trip.

But it’s possible to hop on a train at Grand Central Station and be hitting the slopes in less than two hours. You can also catch buses from a number of places throughout the city that will whisk you away to some surprisingly good ski resorts and get you home in time for a late dinner. And if you’ve got a car, the only limit to your ski adventures is how many hours you’re willing to spend behind the wheel. Here are some of our top picks for skiing day trips from New York City.

Mountain Creek

An hour’s drive from the George Washington Bridge in Vernon Township, New Jersey, Mountain Creek is the closest ski area to NYC. It is beloved by generations of New York skiers who knew it as Great Gorge and then Vernon Valley. Boasting eight lifts, a 1,040-foot vertical rise and 167 skiable acres across four interconnected peaks, Mountain Creek is big enough to make you forget you’re in New Jersey. It also has night skiing on all 46 trails and 100% snowmaking coverage, ensuring good conditions even in non-snowy winters.

Thunder Ridge Ski Area

With three chairlifts, four magic carpets and 22 trails, Thunder Ridge in Patterson, New York, is a great ski area for families. But what really sets it apart is its convenience. Luckily, for many people who live in East Coast cities like Boston and New York, numerous ski resorts are a short drive away. You can be skiing down early-morning corduroy or ripping through powder just a couple hours after getting in your car. What’s more, many ski areas near New York City have their own accommodations, or are located near towns that have great lodging options. Windham mountain , new york.

Located in the Northern Catskills, about two hours from New York City, Windham offers family-friendly fun with 50 runs and 285 acres of skiable terrain. Blue Mountain has 39 trails serviced by 13 lifts, and features 5 terrain parks and nearly 40 lanes for tubing. Bonus: It’s open daily for night skiing. The summit provides picturesque views of the Little Gap Valley, right beside the Pocono Mountains. 

A few honorable mentions are Mount Snow and Gore Mountain . Mount Snow, in West Dover, Vermont, and Gore Mountain, in North Creek, New York, are a bit more of a hike, taking at least 4 hours by car from New York City. However, they do remain popular among New Yorkers for weekend trips or longer stays. Other well-known ski areas, like Bristol Mountain in the Finger Lakes Region, and Whiteface Mountain in Lake Placid, host of the 1980 Winter Olympics, are several hours away, and better to fly to.

The snow bus is the way.

What more can you ask for? They pick you up, they bring you to the mountain, you skip the lines because you are technically in a group. Rental and lift ticket are no brainers. No driving, no parking. Just crash in the bus on the way back after an awesome snow day and you are back home for dinner. Seriously, trying to figure out how to get there, renting a car or carpooling or whatever would be a nightmare. The snow bus is the way.

Located in the Poconos of northeastern Pennsylvania, Camelback Mountain is about two or so hours from New York. With 34 trails almost equally balanced among "most difficult," "more difficult," and "easier," Camelback attracts skiers of all levels (note: about 9 percent of the trails are considered "expert"). About two hours from NYC and ideal for families, Windham Mountain Resort has 54 trails spread over 285 skiable acres. The skiing is great, sure, but we love the variety of programs and lessons, from Own It , which offers beginners three days of lessons and their very own skis, to I Heart Snowboarding,  affiliated with the American Heart Association and specifically designed for women. If you've got young ones in tow, you'll definitely want to head over to the Adventure Park , featuring zip lines, snow tubing, ice-skating, and kid-sized snowmobiles.

Day and Weekend Ski and Snowboard Trips NYC

New York City: secret skier's paradise? Well… we wouldn't go that far, but did you know that New York has more ski areas than other state in America, 44, at last count? (Yes, that's more than California, or Colorado). And Southern Vermont has another dozen or so, all within easy weekend ski trip distance from NYC.

So if you are looking to take a nice romantic weekend getaway or are interested in a wonderful winter day trip from NYC to points north and snowy… albeit often machine-made these ski ideas are some of most reliably-excellent excursions, embarking from all over town, to a variety of mountains, with varying degrees of amenities and add-ons. 

Emilio's Ski Shop 

For quantity, variety, and accessibility, it's tough to beat the day ski trips organized by Emilio's Ski Shop, who started these trips 50 years ago! Five-six morning trips scheduled a week, Emilio's boards busloads of skiers and snowboarders from all over Manhattan including: Forest Hills, Cobble Hill, Bay Ridge, the Upper East Side for day trips to Okemo, Hunter, Windham, Bromley, Gore and more. Blades Board & Skate Shops Bus Trips 

Another enthusiastically attended series of ski trips sets off from the Blades Board and Skate shops in Noho and on the Upper West Side in NYC, every Saturday and Sunday to Hunter, and on Wednesdays to Windham. Shredders, it should be noted, are more than welcome. A mere $85 will get you transportation and an all-area ski lift ticket, and there are ski trip package deals for rentals and lessons, too. Urban Sherpa / NYC Ski and Board 

Urban Sherpa works with NYC Ski and Board to shuttle thousands of New York City snow-lovers each season to Hunter and Windham as well as those big Southern Vermont favorites Jay Peak, Killington and Stratton. Buses depart from Union Square and Times Square in Manhattan, and a day's worth of shredding the ski slopes will set you back around $85. Paragon Sports Ski / Snowboard Express

From New York City's best all-around sporting goods store (yes, it's a little expensive, but no matter what sport/outdoor activity brings you through the doors, they seem to ALWAYS have what you're looking for) comes one of our favorite NYC ski trip packages. Meet in front of the centrally-located Paragon just north of Union Square every Saturday, Sunday, and Wednesday, and for $84 you get a luxury bus (with breakfast and movies) and a ski lift ticket to either Hunter or Windham. The Ski and Snowboard Club 

Weekend ski trip packages from New York City are little less common, especially ones as well organized as Mark and Marina's Upper West Side , non-for-profit, just-for-fun venture, The Ski and Snowboard Club in NYC. Check out their reservations for weekend ski trips this season. The Ski and Snowboard Club "includes a wide variety of personalities, ages and abilities, but can be generalized as fun-loving people who enjoy sharing outdoor activities with each other."
