Kings of LeoniHeart Radio Festival, Backstage, Day 2, Las Vegas, USA - 23 Sep 2017

Kings of Leon have followed manager Andy Mendelsohn to Full Stop Management. The band had previously been represented by Nashville-based Vector Management; Mendelsohn left the firm at the end of January. He brought with him to Full Stop client Zane Lowe, best known for his gig as the voice of BBC Radio 1 and now Beats 1 radio on Apple Music. Another client, Tom Morello (of Rage Against the Machine, Audioslave and Prophets of Rage), remained with Vector, which is headed by industry veterans Ken Levitan and Jack Rovner and is also home to Emmylou Harris, Kesha, Alison Krauss, T Bone Burnett, Peter Frampton, Kid Rock, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Aaron Lewis, among others.

Full Stop is the latest incarnation of Azoff Music Group and its roster includes Bon Jovi, Travis Scott, Harry Styles, Mark Ronson, John Mayer and Meghan Trainor in addition to more acts represented by Irving and Jeffrey Azoff and Brandon Creed, among others.

A story published earlier Sunday by the New York Post under the headline “Kings of Leon fire their manager of 20 years” included a statement from Vector founder Levitan. He told Page Six’s Richard Johnson: “I was with the Kings for 20 years and took them from not having a song to being one of the biggest rock bands in the world. I’m friends with them. I love those guys, and wish them the best.”

Popular on Variety

Mendelsohn was the Kings’ day-to-day manager, according to Vector, where he was employed for 17 years and worked his way up to partner. He joined the Los Angeles-based Full Stop officially on Feb. 4. In 2009, he won the Pollstar manager of the year award for his work with Kings of Leon. (Mendelsohn could not be reached for comment.)

Unfettered and unparalleled, indie-rock legends Kings of Leon kicked off their “Can We Please Have Fun” World Tour with a bang. Perfectly melding the nostalgic and the new, the band commanded thousands at the First Direct Arena in Leeds, the first stop on their run of UK and European dates throughout the summer.

Twenty-one years since the release of their debut record, the band triumphantly celebrates the May release of their ninth studio album, Can We Please Have Fun . The album marks their first release since 2021’s When You See Yourself , and finds the band “letting it all go,” “[getting] their groove back” and “[owning] who [they] are.” As Nathan Followill mentions in an interview with Audacy , the band truly made this album for themselves. And with the glowing reviews and abounding praise from its first big night out, it’s clear that the band has thoroughly enjoyed taking their restored confidence for a spin.

Starting the show with “Ballerina Radio,” Jared Followill’s pulsing bass and the band’s expansive build-up proved the ideal jumping off point for the energy-filled set. The Followill brothers (and their cousin) continued, dusting off some catalog favorites like "Comeback Story" (last performed in 2017), "Wait For Me" (last performed in 2018) and "My Party" (last performed in 2019). The band covered all their bases, performing at least one song from each of their nine records, including eight off their most recent release, and five from their award-winning classic, Only by the Night . Breaking the usual save-the-best-for-last formula, Kings of Leon performed their crowd-pleasing showstopper “Sex on Fire” smack dab in the middle of their set, followed by the live debut of “Don’t Stop the Bleeding.” As per The Guardian , this cathartic mid-set whiplash solidified their status as “masters of the beautifully restrained anthem.”

The audience was overtaken by the undulating current of the band’s passionate performance. Like a built-in choir, the nearly 14,000 fans in attendance sang along to every lyric impressively delivered by Caleb Followill. The band was locked in, unbelievably in tune with each other and the audience, issuing a captivating lesson in how to command a crowd. After 24 songs, the band returned for the encore, setting the tone with the live debut of “Rainbow Ball.” An electrifying conclusion to an already sensational performance, Kings of Leon thrilled the crowd with explosive renditions of “Waste a Moment” and “Use Somebody.” The crowd erupted in rapturous excitement, arms in the air and hands raised in praise as they echoed each verse.

Kings of Leon has been in the game for decades. After allowing themselves the opportunity to fully delve into their creative desires on Can We Please Have Fun , totally unrestrained, it’s clear the band has found what works. Giving the band a five-star rating for The Guardian, Dave Simpson reflects on the fruits of their rediscovered self-possession.

"Waste a Moment and Use Somebody are more conventional big hitters, by which time there isn’t a voice in the house that isn’t yelling along, but these are relatively rare grand gestures in a marvelous show that’s otherwise a refreshingly understated triumph."

Earlier this year, Kings of Leon released their innovative eighth studio album When You See Yourself , marking the first time ever that a new album was released as an NFT. In a first of it’s kind launch, the innovative album release made waves through the music industry, quickly becoming one of the most successful wide-scale use of NFTs within the music industry to date.   In the history making drop, the band made available six GOLDEN TICKET experiences, offering fans four front row seats, each tour, to the show of their choosing, anywhere in the world, FOR LIFE.  NFT YOURSELF album token holders were also able to redeem “Going Nowhere” (an acoustic version of the album track ‘Supermarket’). The previously unreleased version of the track is being given as a token of appreciation to everyone who was willing to invest in the future of music, during a year of uncertain futures. As Kings of Leon continue exploring ways to connect directly with their fans, NFT YOURSELF will be the gift that keeps on giving.

The drop has raked in 1k Ethereum, which at today’s valued exchange rate, is approximately 3.7 million dollars. $600,000 of that has gone to directly benefit Live Nation’s Crew Nation. Echoing this sentiment on tour, the band will continue to give back to their musical community with one dollar from every ticket going directly to their newly formed Inherit The Music foundation.

Inherit The Music is embarking on a campaign to inspire the next generation of musicians. Co-founded by Kings of Leon and philanthropist Alisha Ballard, Inherit The Music supports local organizations that pay forward the gifts that only music can provide. By providing resources and funding education programs at all age levels, this newly formed charitable organization aims to impact the aspiring musicians of today and the future.

Kings of Leon’s latest album, When You See Yourself , was recorded at Nashville’s famed Blackbird Studios and produced by Grammy Award-winning Markus Dravs. The album has received critical acclaim with  Rolling Stone Magazine  noting “…the band’s eighth album is an arena rock of the mind,” that “lunges and soars with rippling guitar leads cascading across some of the dirtiest riffs the band has put on a record since the New South-meets-neo-Strokes garage moves of its first two albums… this record might surprise you.”

Kings of Leon Sign With Capitol Records, Announce New Album and Tour

Long-running, Grammy-winning rock band Kings of Leon are starting off 2024 with a bang, announcing that they have signed with Capitol Records, which will release their forthcoming ninth full-length studio album, to be followed by a major world tour.

The album, titled "Can We Please Have Fun," was produced by Harry Styles/ Florence and the Machine collaborator Kid Harpoon (who, with partner Tyler Johnson, was Variety 's Hitmakers 2022 Producer of the Year ), is due on May 10 and is preceded by the lead single "Mustang," available now. The song recalls the innovative and idiosyncratic sound of the group's 2004 breakthrough album, "Aha Shake Heartbreak."

The group's world tour, produced by Live Nation in North America, will hit 26 cities across the U.S. and Canada, starting August 14, and launches June 30 in London with a headline set at BST Hyde Park. Full dates appear below; additional international dates will be announced in the coming weeks.

The new album "was the most enjoyable record I've ever been a part of," says frontman Caleb Followill. His brother, drummer Nathan Followill, adds, "It's like we allowed ourselves to be musically vulnerable. I love it when a rock band is not embarrassed to admit that every song doesn't have to be on 11."

The group continues to be managed by Andy Mendelsohn and Jeffrey Azoff at Full Stop; the announcement follows the recent appointment of Tom March as chairman-CEO of Capitol Music Group. All of the group's previous releases, dating back to their 2023 debut EP "Holy Roller Novocaine," were on RCA Records.
